By KAREN MERLAK The long, warm days of summer turning into the cool nights give us so much to appreciate. All of nature reminds us of God’s presence. Only He could create such a beautiful world. For all we see around us, we are truly grateful.

This morning for church, I had the honor of greeting our congregation. It is a great Sunday morning when we see so many smiling faces. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe continued her series for the “Summer of Grace.” Join us in person or on Facebook every Sunday and Wednesday.

Our church is adding more and more activities to our schedule. Next month, we will add back our Men’s and Women’s breakfast meetings. We are excited to have more events in our new space and look forward to a bright future.

This past Thursday afternoon, I traveled to Forreston to meet with one of the teachers from our team. After a question and answer session, we enjoyed each other’s company over lunch. I am equally excited and nervous to take this next leap.

Clint and I are finding more time to talk with each other. A late evening for me is

the same as his lunch hour the following day. It makes me so happy to see his smile and hear his laugh.

I was lucky enough to have a phone call with Matt, too. My children have turned into adults, handling adult problems, but still, they are my children. The distance is made much shorter when we get to talk with one another.

On Friday evening, I decided to tackle the task of assembling a new glider I purchased for the back deck. My patio umbrella has been outside and unused so far this season. I noticed a small stain and reached out to touch it.

Much to my surprise, I was stung and, soon, surrounded by flying, stinging insects that have made a home in the umbrella. I stayed still and they investigated the area before returning to their new home.

It was my fault for leaving the umbrella sitting so long and not keeping up with the weeds and nests around my home. Meanwhile, at the front of my house, I had long expected a skunk finding a home under my front porch.

On Sunday night, my suspicions were proven correct. I know these creatures

have a purpose. However, they are both inconvenient and uninvited guests. I will assume they feel the same way about me.

I am sure these minor annoyances have a purpose. I may not always understand or appreciate the reasoning, but I trust that God’s big plan is right. As with most troubling situations, we may not always see the reason, but God does.

We have all been through hurtful situations. We have experienced loss and in our sadness, we try to understand why it is happening. Our faith in God helps us to understand that God knows why.

Our faith grows each day as we learn to trust that God knows the bigger picture.

His love and care will help us through the difficult times and reminds us to celebrate the blessings that are all around us.

The good news is that this love and care is for all of us. We only need to take the time to get to know God. He really wants to know each of us.

I hope to see you next Sunday at our church. We gladly welcome you and your family for a time of worship, music, and prayer. All are welcome. There is room for you in our little church in the country.

“I think that it was one of the best events we’ve ever had,” German Valley Days committee member Raquel Quenzer said. “There were so many people who enjoyed time back together, and the weather was great to be outside.”

Donna Smith, a member of the German Valley Days committee and German Valley Lions Club, agreed and said she was “kind of amazed” at the attendance. She wasn’t sure of exact numbers, but said she thought more people came than in previous years.

Time-tested favorites like the pig scramble, kiddie tractor pull, cornhole bag toss and the pork chop dinner made welcome reappearances, Smith said. The Forreston Actors Guild — a group of Forreston High School students and recent graduates — put on a variety show.

“I think, if you can, it’s always good to have programs that feature your own people, because that’s what draws people,” said Smith, who had two grandsons in the show. “People like to see their own people perform.”

New this year was Art in the Park.

Jaime Elliot, of Freeport, came out to teach kids and adults alike how to do a canvas painting, Quenzer said. The 30 participants were walked through the process step-by-step, including learning how to mix colors.

Quenzer’s daughter, Aliyah, 8, was crowned Little Miss German Valley 2021 by Avery Hersey, the retiring Little Miss German Valley.

German Valley Days — usually a three-day event — was scaled down to just one day after organizers had to cancel last year’s event because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s event took place Saturday, July 17, with most of the activities located at Ben Miller Park in the center of the village.

Performing Arts Guild to host ‘Miss Homes’ auditions

The Performing Arts Guild will hold auditions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 17, 18 and 19 for its October production of “Miss Holmes”.

Auditions will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Pinecrest Grove library, 500 Evergreen Lane, Mt. Morris.

When planning for 2021 began, organizers were thinking they’d host only a few things, like the pancake breakfast and the parade, Smith said. But, as time went on and the circumstances surrounding the pandemic improved, more and more events were added.

No decision has yet been made about what next year’s German Valley Days will look like, Smith said, although she hopes at least Friday night will be back on the schedule.

“I have lived here all my life and it just thrills me every year when I see …

all these cars parked all over and all these people coming,” Smith said.

“We’re a very small village, and that we can put on an event that draws people from various places – we’ve got to keep it going so we can continue to celebrate our little town.”

The plot of the play is as follows: When an anonymous note sends a newlywed wife looking for help, Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson work together to uncover the secrets surrounding a corrupt police inspector whose wives have a habit of

turning up dead.

But this Holmes and Watson face far greater challenges than bringing the cunning criminal to justice.

Miss Holmes possesses one of the greatest deductive minds of her generation, but she chafes at the restraints imposed upon her by society and family.

Dr. Watson struggles to make a difference at the only hospital in London that will hire

female doctors. In a time and place where gender roles are rigidly defined, these unconventional women dare to challenge societal norms by providing an unusual, but necessary, service.

‘Awesome turnout’ for benefit ride to benefit girl

azoellner@shawmedia.com A benefit ride for 12-year-old Emmalyn Freeze was as “amazing” as the weather.

“It was an amazing day,” said Steph a n ie Freez e, Emmal yn’s mother. “We had so many riders come out to support Emmalyn and do their ride with their passengers.

There were so many community members coming in to bid on the silent auction and by 50-50 raffle tickets.

“People really came out to support,” she said.

About 130 people participated and a total of $5,150 was raised, event organizer Monica Miller said, a cousin of Stephanie and Emmalyn.

“That was an awesome turnout,” Miller said. “[It went] great, actually. Couldn’t ask for a better day.

There were no accidents, no negative anything. It was all great.”

Emmalyn climbed into a Mt. Morris Fire Department Brush Truck and with some encourage-

ment from her mom started the ride with “Start your engine. 1,2,3 ride”.

A long row of motorcycles headed north on Wesley Avenue before turning west on Illinois 64, to their first stop in Lanark.

Emmalyn, of Mt. Morris, has Chiari Malformation, a neurological disorder where the cerebellum extends out of the skull and into the spinal canal, among other medical issues. She has had 43 surgeries since age 3.

The family is expected to arrive in California — where Emmalyn’s neurosurgeon is located — on Friday for more medical procedures.

Emmalyn enjoyed meeting everyone after, shaking hands and even dancing with a few, Stephanie said.

Freeze said her extends a special thank you to Joe and Monica Miller for putting the event together, as well as thank-yous to area businesses that donated for the silent auction and all community members who gave their time to ride, bought raffle tickets and bid on the silent auction.

ow many of you remember the picture of the flag that hung in Congress School? When Marcia Riddle called me about the picture of the flag that her folks had in their collection of artifacts, I instantly remembered what it looked like.

When she delivered it to the museum, it was as I remembered it.

She said she had no idea how her parents had gotten this picture. It was written on the back that it had hung in the school building. I told her that they had probably gotten it from the sale of things when the school closed.

I remember going to the sale a number of years ago but I do not remember getting anything.

When the school was built in 1899 the newspaper weekly published what pictures had been donated.

They had a picture committee that handled where the pictures were to be placed in the building and they described the pictures and who had donated them.

I have not gone to the library to look at each week’s list in the paper. They were hoping people would help decorate the school and they did.

Recently we received from Betty Swanson the picture her family had given and it had a nice little engraved name tag on it. That now hangs at Aplington House. This one was written on the back. I am wondering where the picture of the flag hung in the school.

When I turned this picture of the flag over, it said, “Summer of Polo Congress School.” Also there was an article titled, “The Story of Our Flag” on the back

Polo Historical Society that was signed by E. D. Reck. I realized that this picture does not go back to the days of when Congress School was built.

The story had been put out by Our Flag Corporation of Kansas City, Missouri. That business was started by Wald and Company in 1924 and still is a family owned business of Harold and Lois Vaille today. They handle flags and other things.

In my mind, I am thinking this picture of the flag hung in Mr. Albert Iske’s office. Am I correct? I do however remember seeing it. It has tape on the back and needs some repair so I will give it to Ed Olsen for some tender loving care. He has a knack for that sort of thing.

Congress School, which was built 1899, closed in 1983. Mr. E. D. Reck was on our school board and I remember him but I do not remember when Mr. Reck was active in our community. The picture will be a nice addition to our museum.

We are making plans for our Polo Historical Society picnic for August. It will be Wednesday, Aug. 11 at Henry School at 5:30. Please join us.

Oregon Depot saw steam engines for 65 years

By OTTO DICK Steam powered trains passed through Oregon from 1871-1936 for a total of 65 years.

During that time period the first railroad bridge was a wood covered bridge with vents in the roof to allow smoke from the engines to escape into the air.

At this time there were two water towers supplying these steam engines with water pumped from the Rock River. We have at the depot a telegraph machine that printed the incoming messages.

The first printing telegraph used at the Oregon Depot was in 1910. Radio communication from the depot to the train engineer started in 1915. We also have at our depot a centralized Railroad Traffic Control Board which was housed at the Aurora Branch Office. This controlled the track switches on the CB&Q which passed through Oregon.

Yes this was in operation when steam engines ruled. Now train traffic for the entire US is controlled at a large computerized traffic control center in Texas.

Steam engines powered all the early locomotives, steam boats and factories and laid the foundation for the Industrial Revolution. Steam engines were first invented by Thomas Newcomer 61 years before we became a nation.

In 1829, a man named Peter Cooper started designing and building what was going to be the first American-built steam locomotive. This was eleven years after Illinois was founded and forty-two years before the first train came to Oregon.

This steam locomotive measured 13 feet in length.

The movement of the piston turns the wheels with The Zephyr crosses the Rock River on the Oregon railroad bridge. a connecting rod and crank. Exhaust from the engine makes a “Choo” sound. This was the (choo choo choo) that was heard when the train starts moving.

“Pioneer Locomotive and Two Cars Viewed by Large Crowd Here”

“Oregon turned out almost en-mass to view the old wood burning engine, now converted to the use of coal, a luggage car and a passenger car, which was the forerunner of the Great Northern Railroad and passed through here Tuesday on its own power with a speed of 25 miles per hour. As the little old gaudily painted and brass trimmed two drive-wheel engine and its two cars pulled into the city it was greeted by a large gathering.”

Oregon Station Agent Harold Nance remembered taking his son into Chicago to watch the Pioneer Zephyr make its publicity run from Denver to Chicago. The Twin Cities entered service Dec. 18, 1936.

This was the first Zephyr stopping at the Oregon Depot connecting Chicago to Minneapolis St. Paul. Vista Dome coaches arrived in 1945.

Before steam engines horses pulled the railroad cars. In 1831 a horse pulling a train car raced a steam train and won.

Lyle Grobe and the Rhythm Ramblers, July 30

Lyle Grobe and the Rhythm Ramblers will perform on July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Jamboree in the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell.

“This band, who has appeared during all eight Friday Concert seasons, always has the crowds line-dancing on the grass to toe-tapping while sitting in lawn chairs and on the new benches,” said Ubben. “Lyle Grobe has been performing for many years starting in the early 1950s with two brothers, Harry and Richard Hackbarth.

Ubben said the band has appeared

at many shows in the Lee County area for years.

“They began moving into the Ogle County area in the late 50s at venues such as Castle Rock Bar on Route 2 in Oregon. Lyle then went a different direction later on where he was a radio announcer for WIXN which is now River Country 101.7,” Ubben said. “He then began an era in his life of being a nightclub owner when he owned and managed Skyline Lounge in Dixon.”

During his time at the Skyline some of the current Rhythm Ramblers joined him.

“Many years have come and gone and Lyle still, with the love of music, keeps the band going by having weekly band rehearsals in his garage both summer and winter. Many a musician has stopped and ‘picked’ a tune or two,” Ubben said.

The band’s drummer, Dennis Milby of Sterling, has been with Grobe since the Skyline days Lisa Allen-Grobe, also from Sterling, has been with the band for several years. The newest member of the band is Lisa’s husband, Paul Grobe on bass guitar.

Cannabis license lotteries not applicable to local group

azoellner@shawmedia.com Three recently announced lotteries for 185 licenses allowing operation of adult-use cannabis dispensaries aren’t much help to five local businesspersons looking to open a craft grow facility in Oregon.

On July 15, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced dispensary lotteries and said the Illinois Department of Agriculture had notified applicants who won one of 40 craft grow, 32 infuser or 141 t r a n s p o r t e r licenses.

“The lottery doesn’t necessarily apply to us at this Ed Messenger stage,” said Ed Messenger, CEO of The Tree Pharm. “We’re part of the initial bill that was giving out 40 licenses across the state for craft growers only.

We have not received a notice, so we’re assuming we didn’t get the license at this stage.”

There are four categories of cannabis licenses: transportation; infusion, which is concentrates, edibles, beverages, etc.; growers — either cultivation or craft — where cannabis is

grown strictly for wholesale; and dispensaries, which offers retail sales, Messenger said.

The difference between craft grow and cultivation centers is the amount of product that can be grown, Messenger said. Cultivation centers can grow up to 100,000-square-feet of canopy, while craft grow operations are limited to an initial 5,000-square-feet of canopy.

The Tree Pharm plans to open at 807 Pines Road in Oregon, where Basler’s Ace Hardware previously was located. Along with Messenger, The Tree Pharm team includes David Murray, Cole Johnson, Justine Messenger and Tyler Hagemann.

Once The Tree Pharm receives a license, they’re good to go on the local level, Oregon City Administrator Darin DeHaan said.

“All of those hoops have already been resolved here,” DeHaan said.

“There’s no more political review or any debate on it. All of those ordinances have been codified and put in place.”

Much of the information coming from the state regarding cannabis licenses is about dispensaries because of controversy surrounding the equity of license recipients, Messenger said.

“That’s really the biggest downfall is just the waiting game,” Messenger added. “It’s been over a year since the licenses were supposed to be issued. A year’s a long time to get behind in the industry.”

Capitol News Illinois referred to the legal cannabis industry as a “largely white, male-dominated” one — something Messenger agreed is true.

“We try to diversify [our team members] as much as we can,” he said. “But still, because of our location and where we’re at, there’s only so much we can

Oregon is 96.5% white and Ogle County as a whole is 94.3% white, according to the 2019 American Community Survey five-year estimates.

The ACS is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

They’re looking to provide higher-paying jobs locally, and to offer programming that will “promote and empower people,” he said. Potential programs include education, job transportation and assistance with childcare.

BRIEFS CDC: Lettuce grown in Rochelle linked to salmonella outbreak

A salmonella outbreak that so far has infected eight people in Illinois has been linked to lettuce grown and produced at BrightFarms, llinois Department of Public Health said.

IDPH is working with local health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the outbreak, linked to the Rochelle farm’s Sunny Crunch salad.

According to the CDC, those eight people were from two states, and were infected from June 10 to 15 in Cook, DuPage and McHenry counties. They reported buying Sunny Crunch.

IDPH is working with federal officials to determine where the salad was distributed.

People potentially be exposed across the state, officials said.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include

headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, chills, fever, nausea, and dehydration. Those who experience these symptoms 12 to 72 hours after eating Sunny Crunch should report that information to a health care provider.

Anyone who has bought the salad should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. Surfaces and containers that may have touched the contaminated products should be washed using hot and soapy water.

Oregon parents speak out against mandatory masks Superintendent says district is still waiting for state guidelines

ehinton@shawmedia.com The Oregon School Board is waiting for further guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health before deciding what the district’s mask policy will be for the upcoming school year.

But parents present at Monday’s board meeting urged school officials to eliminate mask requirements and let parents decide what would be best for their children.

not issued that guidance yet.”

Mahoney said the district has had multiple meetings on what the district will propose as a plan but a final plan can not be determined until officials learn what ISBE says.

“What we don’t want to do is say to

you ‘hey we’re going to do this year’ then 3 days later come back and say ‘we’re not going to do that’. We’d like to be as right as possible the first time,” he said.

Continued from page 10 Local school officials already have part of the plan built and will add the new information once it is received, then release that to the school board and district staff to get their feedback and input. “And then once we get that back we will release it to parents to get their feedback and input,” Mahoney said. “The ultimate plan would be adopted at the Aug. 2 board meeting.”

He said if credible information is received before the August meeting he would send a specific email to families notifying them of that information before the meeting.

“It’s not that we don’t want to make

a decision. I just don’t want to make 3 decisions and have to change them every time and put you through that kind of turmoil,” he told the parents present at the meeting.

But 6 of 18 parents present at the meeting spoke out against any mask requirement.

Joe Anderson of Chana said children were being “indoctrinated” by state decisions and mandates and “core values” instilled at home were being lost.

“We have got to stop what they [state officials] are doing,” Anderson said. “I say we don’t need their money.”

board, no school,” he said. “You need to be more parent-centered as you move forward.”

He said the curve for COVID-19 infections had already been “flattened” and his 6-year-old son did not need a “disgusting, snot-filled mask in his face”.

“A disgusting piece of cloth over someone’s face has no benefits,” Mudge said.

Doug Shafer of Oregon also spoke out against mandatory masks for students. “It should be our choice,” he said. “If we let face masks in this year we will have it forever. It’s about money and power.”

Some said online options for students who don’t want to wear masks should remain available.

Three others at the meeting also urged the board to let parents decide if their children should wear masks.

“We know masks don’t work or COVID would already be over. I think it should be our choice,” said Allison Colinsenga.

“It should be a parent’s choice,” said Jen Eckerd. “Give us the choice to send our kids to school masked or unmasked. That choice should remain with the parent.”

“They don’t have to wear a mask anywhere now except at school,” said Ashley Flannagan. “It should be optional.”

In an FAQ on the CDC website, the CDC notes that carbon dioxide levels breathed in by mask wearers do not rise. “[C arbo n dioxid e ] comp letel y escapes into the air through the cloth mask when you breathe out or talk,” reads the FAQ. “[Carbon dioxide] molecules are small enough to easily pass through any cloth mask material. In contrast, the respiratory droplets that carry the virus that causes COVID-19 are much larger than [carbon dioxide], so they cannot pass as easily through a properly designed and properly worn cloth mask.”According to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, reported cases in kids ages 5 to 11 averaged 1,056 new cases per week from June 2020 through June 2021. For kids ages 12 to 17, they averaged 1,587

new cases per week during the same time period, per state data.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children were 1.3% to 3.6% of total reported hospitalizations, and between 0.1% to 1.9% of all child COVID-19 cases resulted in hospitalization. Deaths for the 20 and under population remain the lowest of any age group in the state, with a total of only 20 statewide for the entire pandemic as of July 13.

On July 9, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its guidance regarding the start of the 2021-22 school year, and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) followed by adopting the guidelines regarding the return to in-person learning in Illinois public schools.

Those guidelines included requiring masks only for individuals who are not fully vaccinated and recommending at least three feet of physical distance between students within classrooms.

Other key points to the revised guidance include continued mitigation efforts and emphasizing “layered prevention strategies” (masking, distancing, testing) to protect people who are not fully vaccinated, which at this time includes children under the age of 12.

On July 8, Thomas E. Bertrand, Executive Director of the Illinois Association of School Boards, and Tom Neeley, President of the IASB Board of Directors, sent a letter to Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, to emphasize “that decision-making regarding COVID-19 mitigation measures for public schools be returned to locally elected boards of education.”

That letter included requests for guidance that “permits local school boards, in consultation with local public health departments and in consideration of local COVID-19 vaccination and transmission data, to make decisions relative to mitigation measures, including the use of face coverings and social distancing practices” and “allows school boards, in consultation with local public health departments, to approve and implement appropriate mitigation measures in response to a rise in positive COVID-19 cases in the local community and/or region.”

Residents take part in Town Hall Vision Meeting

ehinton@shawmedia.com Twenty Mt. Morris residents concerned about the future of education, took 2-hours on July 15 to discuss and draft ideas in a “Town Hall Vision Meeting” to present to the Oregon School Board in an effort to save the David L. Rahn Junior High School from closing.

In May, Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney announced a proposal to close DLR, the last school remaining in this village of 3,000, due to decreasing enrollments and increasing maintenance costs. He outlined his proposal to close the school at two school board meetings, a Mt. Morris Village Board meeting, and a Town Hall meeting, held in Mt. Morris in May. At a the Town Hall meeting on May 25, several of the 75-80 people attending gave impassioned pleas to keep the school in town with a couple others asking for more details and a delay in any decision until more community inout was given.

He said the building needs $6 million in repairs and is costing the district’s budget about $400,000 a year.

He is proposing closing the school at the end of the 2021-22 school year and

moving students to Oregon High School, located 5 miles to the east. The school board agreed in June to delay any decision for 60-days.

Last Thursday night, 20 people under the guidance of Rev. John Larson, broke up into 5 smaller groups and listed ideas on the provided query

“What shall education look like in 5 to 10 years in Mt. Morris?”.

Larson, a retired pastor and Mt. Morris resident, said he attended a very small school in Iowa. “For me, living and growing up in a small town is a wonderful thing,” he said.

He urged participants to consider the future during their discussions.

“The future is open. It is dependent on what we do now and how we approach it,” he said. “I like to be proactive and vision is incredibly important for life. We are here for the next generation for children and families who may not even live here now.

“I feel it is almost unbelievable that a town of 3,000 would not have a school.

To me that is unconceivable,” Larson said.

Rob Urish said DLR and the Mt. Morris School District had a strong history of “academic and athletic excellence”.

“That is a legacy I don’t want to see destroyed,” Urish said. “Our vision tonight is to envision a future.”

Urish is leading a recently-formed “Advisory Group” made up of “concerned citizens and taxpayers” and

Mahoney has said that a state-required 10-year Health, Life, Safety survey of the district buildings, done last fall, shows nearly $6 million in state-mandated improvements are needed at the 66-year-old school, including asbestos removal.

The school district could issue bonds to pay for the work, which would then be passed on to all taxpayers within the school district as debt-service, Mahoney said. Electrical, roof,

and security upgrades have been made at DLR after the two districts consolidated in 1994.

Other suggestions from the Vision Meeting included using the DLR as a facility to host college, vocational, trade, and lifeskills classes for the community and adding a kindergarten through 3rd grade school with preschool capability. “We want the see the little kids here,” said Heather Schwartzrock.

Salley Wessels, another retired teacher, asked if the group’s suggestions should be more definitively based on age groups as to usage. Urish said the exercise was to plan and offer ideas

for years going forward, but to focus on having the school remain a junior high.

“Is our response to the Oregon board to convince them to keep DLR open because its the best ‘climate’ and do they really give a hoot about 10 years down the road?,” Wessels asked.

Larson said a mission statement would be created from ideas gathered at Thursday’s meeting.

Urish said Thursday’s exercise will be part of the presentation that will be given to the Oregon School Board in August. He said that presentation would also include questions about school finance and past decisions made by the school board.

includes former school board members, former and current school administrators, former and current chief financial officers, an attorney, a school auditor, and other community leaders.

Urish has said the intent of the Advisory Group is “not to usurp or hijack authority” from the school board, but to study the “many circumstances, potential repercussions and possible unintended consequences” with Mahoney’s recommendation, and offer “sensible, practical, action-able solutions, alternatives” to closing the school.

After about an hour of deliberation last Thursday night, groups offered suggestions like having the school house 6-8 grades to make it a “real middle school” and improving communication between the school district and Mt. Morris residents.

Ogle Health Department ‘pulling back’ from mass COVID-19 vaccination mission

Vaccinations available in Rochelle, Oregon Tuesday - Thursday

azoellner@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department has pulled back from its mass vaccination mission, Administrator Kyle Auman told county board members Tuesday.

“Our last mass vaccination clinic, we vaccinated seven people — and we had a significant amount of resources set up for seven hours waiting for people to come in,” Auman said. “So it made more sense to pull back and invite people to come in to both Rochelle and the Oregon office for vaccinations.”

higher than it was previously, Auman said. The region’s positivity rate is 2.4%.

“We have had several summer camps, day camps or overnight camps that have kind of led to these positive cases — not only locally, but then these cases have spread back out regionally and outside of our region,” he said.

The health department is working to prepare for the 2021-22 school year, but still is awaiting state guidance on how to operate, “particularly around masking,” Auman said. The department will release local guidance soon, he said.

It sounds like the vaccine-eligible

age range will increase to 6-and-above sometime in the winter, Auman said.

At that point, the health department will make another pass at vaccinating the school population.

“We’ve been reviewing that, trying to fill the gaps where the state and federal government have not put out guidance,” he said. “We’re trying to work as best we can with local school districts, but this upcoming school year seems to be a little bit more contentious than previous. We’re trying to make the right decisions for the students, the people of Ogle County and the people of our region to try to keep everybody safe.”
