My sons continue to reach me at different times of the day. Some days it is difficult to match up our free time so we can have a conversation. On Saturday morning, after several attempts, I was able to connect with Clint for a short conversation.

Sometimes, timing is everything. When my sons and I are trying to communicate, we have to juggle time zones and work schedules. For the most part, I can figure out when they are going to be home.

I have met many of my friends just because the timing had worked out. Maybe our kids were in school together or we happened to sit next to each other. Those circumstances led to meaningful friendships.

It makes me believe that God is in those details. His timing is perfect. We may not always understand why events happen when they do, but we can put our trust in Him. We believe that everything, the good and the bad, will move us into the best parts of life.

With the reassurance that God is with us, we have the courage to take a chance.

Our faith helps us overcome the fear of taking that first step in a new job, a new rela-

tionship, or a new direction for our lives.

The time will come when we find ourselves in circumstances that are far beyond our control. Our continued faith in God reminds us that even in times of struggles, we are not hopeless. Because of God, there is always hope.

I am truly blessed for these reminders.

Over the past few years, I have experienced both big, life-changing decisions and difficult, life-changing circumstances. Thankfully, I am surrounded by wonderful friends and family who remind me of God’s faithfulness and timing.

Our faith continues to grow the more we practice it. Every little bit of faith helps it to grow into the giant faith that moves the mountains. When we are surrounded by a church family, we have a family that reminds us that our good and faithful God has perfect timing.

I have faith that our church family will continue to grow. Come and join us for a time of worship, each Sunday morning, in person and online. The time to be included in our faith family is now.

BY KAREN MERLAK Each day a little more rain falls in our area. Slowly, we are starting to see relief from the very dry days of late spring. We know that we won’t need to worry when God is in control. For all the ways He takes care of each of us, we thank Him every day.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Bob Toms. Pastor Charlotte shared her message for the morning in person and online. Charlotte continues to give a midweek prayer service on Wednesdays at noon on our Facebook page.

On Saturday, my brother Ben Bittinger, his son Garrett, and I headed up to Rockford to celebrate Ben’s niece, Raine, who graduated from eighth grade this year. We met Jo in Rockford along with her extended family. Raine was celebrated by many friends and family.

After a few months of exercising my patience, I finally received the call I had been waiting for. I have accepted a job offer for this upcoming school year. This past Thursday evening, my good friend, Deb Ohlwine, came by to celebrate the good news with me.

The Department of Children and Family Services visited the Safranek/ Burton household nearly a dozen times over the course of two years, following up on five separate reports of suspected abuse and neglect. Each time, DCFS closed the case after finding no indications of parental wrongdoing.

That’s according to DCFS records ob tained by Sau k Valley Medi a through a Freedom of Information Act request for a timeline of the department’s interaction with the family.

Nathaniel Burton was 4 when the allegations first surfaced. He was 7 when, investigators said, his mother, Sarah Safranek, suffocated him in their home on Feb. 17. An autopsy showed the boy also suffered a ruptured liver.

Safranek, 34, is in Ogle County Jail on $2 million bond; she pleaded not guilty May 6 to five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child.

According to the DCFS timeline:

When the first report was made, on Sept. 8, 2018, Nathaniel was living with his mother, his father, Bryan Burton, and two older half-sisters, then both younger than 10. DCFS did not reveal who made the complaints.

The first time, both parents were investigated for “substantial risk of physical injury/environment injurious to health and welfare by neglect; inadequate supervision; cuts, bruises, welts abrasions and oral injuries; and substantial risk of physical injury/ environment injurious to health and welfare.”

DCFS investigators were unable to make contact with the family that day but came back to the home three days later and again on Oct. 31, 2018. Investigators said they observed all three children and found “no signs of abuse or neglect, and the children were assessed as safe in the care of their mother for both visits.”

The case was closed on Nov. 5, 2018, and the family was “referred for community-based services.”

On Feb. 15, 2019, another report was made to DCFS, this one naming one of

Both parents again were investigated for cuts, bruises, welts abrasions and oral injuries. Both girls were observed at school and interviewed; both had scratches, which one said was caused by their cat, and one had a rash; both denied either parent hurting them.

On Feb. 25, 2019, investigators talked with Nathaniel, who had “no visible signs of abuse or neglect.”

All three children were observed again April 15, 2019, and the case was deemed unfounded and closed the next day.

Three days later, on April 18, 2019, another report as made that the three children were being victimized, and Safranek was investigated for neglect.

An investigator visited that day and saw no signs of abuse or neglect. DCFS workers returned June 12, 2019, and talked with Nathaniel. On June 17, 2019, they returned and talked with all three children. The case was determined to be unfounded and closed that day.

Again, the family was referred for community-based services.

On Aug. 5, 2019, a report was made alleging Nathaniel was being victimized. Both parents again were investigated for neglect, as well as inadequate supervision by leaving the boy alone “at home, outside or in the community” and “in the care of an inadequate caregiver.”

Sarah Safranek, 34, is in Ogle County jail on $2 million bond; she pleaded not guilty May 6 to five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child in the suffocation death of her 7-year-old son, Nathaniel. Department of Children and Family Services records show that the agency investigated Safranek five times after receiving reports that one or all three of her children were being abused or neglected; she was cleared all five times after investigators said they found no signs to back up the complaints.

DCFS tried but failed to make contact with the family that day.

Two days later, on Aug. 7, 2019, another report was made, this one listing all three children. Again, Safranek was investigated for neglect; an investigator saw no signs that day or four days later, on Aug. 11, 2019. By then, the girls were living with their biological father.

All three children were visited one more time, on Sept. 25, 2019, in their respective homes.

No visible signs of abuse or neglect were observed, and the case was closed on Oct. 2, 2019, with a third referral to community based services.

The final investigation was made on Feb. 17, when the agency received the report of Nathaniel’s death. It notes the girls were with their father

and not home when Nathaniel died; they were interviewed two days later.

According to the sixth and final report included on the timeline, dated Feb. 19, 2021: “Investigator visited with the two surviving siblings of Nathaniel, observing and interviewing them. The two children were aware that Nathaniel is deceased.

“There were no noted visible signs of abuse or neglect, but T.P. [now 11] did admit that she had witnessed their mother [being] abusive to Nathaniel in the past when she lived with mom.”

Safranek faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted of murder, and six to 30 years if convicted of aggravated battery. She has a pretrial hearing July 28. The DCFS investigation is ongoing.

Iron Mike flowing again in downtown Oregon

ehinton@shawmedia.com When the switch was turned and Oregon’s historic water fountain Iron Mike began to flow again, the rush of water meant more to Sandy Greenfield than just a refreshing sip.

“My dad and mom met here around 1936,” said Greenfield, a longtime Forreston resident who now lives in Byron. “They were at a band concert on the courthouse lawn and were standing in front of Iron Mike when Dad said he took some of my mom’s popcorn and...here I am.”

Greenfield was one of nearly 70 people who turned out June 24 to watch as the 1901 free-flowing fountain was re-dedicated after a 2-year restoration and relocation project, led by Mike Bowers of Oregon.

City and county officials decided to move the free-flowing fountain after a wayward car almost hit it a few years ago. It’s new location is a few yards south of its former location (at the intersection of Illinois 64 and Illinois 2) to the northeast corner of the Courthouse Square.

The fountain was cleaned, sand-

blasted and repainted by the E.D. Etnyre Co., at its Oregon facility and then stored at the street department over the winter as COVID-19 delayed the project.

“The Illinois Humane Society provided the Iron Mike water fountain to the City of Oregon in June of 1901, 120 years ago,” said Bowers, project manager and former Superintendent of Streets for the City of Oregon.

Iron Mike has three drinking levels, one for dogs, one for horses and one for people and was endorsed by the Illinois Humane Society when it was forged.

Bowers said The Illinois Humane Society provided water fountains to offer fresh drinking water to the horses pulling carriages in Chicago and Milwaukee.

“They felt that the horses were being mistreated so they wanted fresh water for the horses but then it turned to cats, dogs and children. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union also felt that if fresh water was available it would deter people from going to the taverns. I don’t know how successful

The 1960s tribute band Shindig opens the 2021 Jamboree season on July 2.

The 1960s tribute band, Shindig, will open the Mt. Morris Jamboree’s 2021 concert season with a performance at the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell on Friday, July 2, starting at 7 p.m.

“Shindig presents a tribute to the 60s and always delivers a trip back to the greatest and most diverse decade of Rock and Roll music,” said organizer Larry Ubben.

“Covering over 90 different bands from that period of time where music told the story of an entire generation - early 60s, British Invasion, Psychedelic, pop, girl groups, Woodstock...are all part of the show!”

Tom Rychter and Tom Benson play guitars and sing, John Murphy plays Bass, Sharman Strode sings and Mark Lega plays drums and sings.

“Everyone fortunate to see their performances here in years past will readily attest to the excitement this band brings to the stage,” Ubben said.

The Ogle County Pork Producers will be serving butterfly pork chop sandwiches with chips and drinks starting at 6 p.m. as part of the opening night of the three-day Let Freedom Ring Festival.

The Jonas Fultz Memorial Car Show and Cruise will be happening on the north end of the Campus that night, starting at 5 p.m.

“They have quickly built a reputation as one of the most versatile acoustic bands in the Midwest.

Their music has been described as Bill Monroe meets Robert Johnson at the crossroads and they’ll be playing a selection of Blues, Bluegrass and American Roots Music,” Ubben said.

The LFR Backyard BBQ Competition will help feed the crowd with other activities happening uptown as part of the festival, including a watermelon eating contest during the concert.

July 4 - Flibbertijibbet David Orr, formerly of Mt. Morris, brings his band, Flibbertijibbet down from La Crosse, Wisconsin to celebrate Independence Day with a free concert on the bandshell from 5-8 p.m.

“With David playing drums, this band has been together for 30 years and brings to the stage an eclectic blend of Rock, Americana, Jam and Folk Music all wrapped into one package,” said Ubben. “Lead by singer, songwriter and guitarist Drew Dockry, Flibjib is starting their extensive Midwest tour here in support of their new CD, A Mississippi Life. The band includes Eric “Guido” Lemon on Bass, Kyle Renfro on Lead Guitar and vocals and Matt Salvo on keyboards.”

Coming from different backgrounds band members fuse their approach to deliver their version of some of the finest rock-n-roll a la The Band, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Counting Crows and Phish, Ubben said.

Magician to take the stage on July 3 in Mt. Morris Magician Jeremy ‘The Amazer’ Haak will perform for Let Freedom Ring on the Band Shell Stage on Friday, July 3 from 4 - 4:30 p.m.

Haak learned his first magic trick when he was 13. At age 16, he started performing as “The Amazer”. Since that time, Jeremy’s magic has entertained people from all walks of life including a Miss America, Two Legends of Professional Wrestling, and even other magicians.

Haak is a certified Doctor of Magic by the International Magicians Society and is the first and only 5-time winner of The Magician of the Year of Ring #11 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

One of the benches located behind Iron Mike is inscribed: “In Loving Memory of Charles H. and Hazel I Ehmen” — Greenfield’s mom and dad.

“When we asked my dad what he wanted as a memorial he said he wanted something ‘right behind Iron Mike because that’s where I met your mom’, ” Greenfield said. “Iron Mike is very special to us and it is very special to everyone who grew up in Oregon.”

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

eremiah Nash was the father of Oregon manufacturer Chester Nash and grandfather of Ruby Nash who taught in Ogle County public schools for 50 years.

Jeremiah and his wife are buried at the Big Mound Cemetery located south-west of Davis Junction.

Jeremiah Nash and Lancing Brooks were the two persons responsible for starting the cemetery. The first burial was Mr. Brooks’ little boy who was removed from his original burial site near the Beacon Schoolhouse.

Many graves exist of those who first broke sod in Scott Township more than 150 years ago.

There are 13 Nash burials at Big Mound Cemetery. An impressive marker lists Jeremiah’s and Olive’s children: Children Sophia 1837-1906; Alfred 1839-1926; Chester 1841-1921; Elizabeth 1843-1847; Harriet 1845-1848; Elmer 1847-1909; George 1850-1929; Nettie 1854-1928; and Charles 18561935.

It’s interesting that Nettie married Jefferson Fraser and her sister Sophia married Jefferson Fraser brother George. So you have two Nash sisters marrying two Fraser brothers. Elizabeth Nash died at age 4 and Harriet

On July 4, 1861 before Big Mound was a cemetery, a celebration known as the “Union Forever” was held there with a large handmade linen flag that was unfolded by two veterans of one of the early wars.

A battle was staged on the flat ground to the northeast of the hill. Settlers from a 30 miles radius came with picnic baskets to spend the day. Four years after this celebration this site was set aside for the community cemetery. Today standing in the cemetery and looking 2 ½ miles northeast is a fantastic view of Davis Junction .

Jeremiah Nash was born on “Shoemaker Hill” a short distance from Little Falls, New York. He was a farmer,

contractor and builder.

He married Olive Feb., 1835 in Oneida County, New York. We have at the Historical Society a description of the First English Methodist Episcopal Church built by Jeremiah in the town of Steuben built in 1854.

There is a list of lumber and timber which included 50 2 by 8 inch joists 13 feet long. The total cost of the materials was $16, 357.

Jeremiah moved to Ogle County in 1860. The 1872 Ogle County Plat map shows Jeremiah owned four parcels of land located near Davis Junction.

Jeremiah’s father Francis lived at a place called Braintree, Massachusetts.

A history of the Nash Family started out with the following, “SPEAKING of

ANCESTORS If you could see your ancestors, All standing in a row, There might be some of them, perhaps, you wouldn’t want to know.---But here’s another question which, requires a different view, If you could meet your ancestors, would they be proud of you?”

My next article is about the accomplishments of Chester Nash and the factory he built at the corner of 3rd and Franklin Streets in Oregon.

Chester is the father of Ruby Nash and built the Nash home now that is now the Ogle County Historical Society.

Summer reading keeps kids in “reading” shape T

he importance of reading during the summer months has been studied extensively and results indicate that students who do not read in the summer lose skills, often falling below reading levels they achieved during the school year.

It can be compared to an athlete who for some reason sits out a season and/or the off-season training. It takes time to get back to the same performance levels they had previously.

For this month we’ll look at several ways we can encourage our children and grandchildren to include some reading in summer schedules.

One consideration is that spending 15 to 30 minutes five days a week would be enough to prevent summer reading loss. The reading does not have to be completed all at one time.

For example, we might help build routines that fit in two 10 or 15-minute times for reading several days each week.

A second idea to consider is a broader definition of the kinds of texts to read. Include all kinds of books, magazines, recipes, instructions or directions, or web-based reading on various Internet sites. Books, of course, can be electronic versions which may offer more appeal.

A good goal is to try to read a wide variety of genres of literature as well.

Any reading done in the course of every day events can count. Think about the reading you do in a program you receive at a baseball game or a play.

Reading directions to put something together or rules for a game offer another kind of reading. You might keep a log of all the different kinds of reading your family does over the summer.

Reading aloud to our children and grandchildren also counts for time spent reading. Encourage them to try different kinds of books across all genres – fiction, nonfiction, how-to books, cookbooks, or magazines. See if they have a favorite author and try to find more books by that person.

Of course, we need to be sure that reading materials are available for our children and grandchildren.

Our local public libraries have excellent summer reading programs for all ages.

Both the Oregon and Mt. Morris libraries have a variety of engaging activities throughout June and July and an end-of-program special event. Children need to sign up and set a goal for the number of

After a year off due to the COVID19 pandemic, the Ogle County Fair will welcome visitors back this year with improvements to the fairgrounds and new events along with old favorites.

The 167th fair will resume July 28 Aug. 1 at the Ogle County Fairgrounds on Lime Kiln Road, just off Illinois 64 a mile west of Oregon.

The all-volunteer fair board, along with a host of other volunteers, have been far from idle during the year off.

“We used the time to make improvements to the buildings and grounds,” said publicity director Carol Magnuson. “We have a brand new sign at the entrance and we’re putting up a new fence.”

Volunteers, including 4-H club members spruced up the picnic tables on the grounds and removed the old fence to make way for the new.

One thing that will not be new is the family-friendly cost to get into the fair and enjoy all it has to offer.

The fair board is again including unlimited carnival rides with the $8 general admission fee at the gate.

For even more savings, admission

tickets can be purchased in advance at a cost of $6 per person, a $2 discount from the gate price, at Casey’s General Stores and a few other locations.

Signs will be posted designating where tickets are available.

Discounted tickets for the grandstand shows are also available in advance at the same locations, at a cost of $8 per person, also $2 less than the $10 regular price.

Children age 3 and younger get into the fair free but each will need a $4 wristband to ride at the carnival.

Wristbands are available at the gate.

Advance tickets can also be purchased online by going to the fair website at www.oglecountyfair.com. Tickets purchased online will carry an additional convenience fee.

Kicking off the fair will be the 2021 Queen Contest on Wednesday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. on the stage on DePuy Drive.

The pageant includes the Little Miss and Mr. Contest for ages 5-8, followed by the Young Miss for ages 9-12, and Junior Miss for ages 13-15, all cul-

minating in the Miss Ogle County Fair Queen Contest for ages 16-21.

Musical entertainment will be a mix of old and new with The Jimmys, a popular blues and rhythm and blues band, making their fair atdebut on Sunday, Aug. 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the grandstand.

Admission will be a donation.

Other musical performers at the Lions Shelter will be Jim Wolber & the Lariat Band on Thursday, July 29, First Friday on Friday, July 30, and John Lindhorst & Strummers on Saturday, July 31. Shows are from 7:30 to 10 p.m. each evening.

Other entertainment throughout fair includes Dan Dan the Farmer Man Comedy Rainmaker Shows, the Wild World of Animals, Ta-Da Robots, and Chainsaw Carver Dave Ferrell. Shows will be held at various times every day of the fair.

Strong finishes for locals in Springfield Oregon’s Herbst places second, Newman’s Grennan takes third at IWCOA state

bweidman@shawmedia.com Oregon senior Andrew Herbst was able to manage one fantastic finish on June 24 at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Class 1A State Tournament.

But he needed two.

Herbst finished off his career with a runner-up finish at 145 pounds, after dropping an 8-6 decision against Kankakee Bishop McNamara’s Blain Christie. It was Christie who escaped with :39 left in the third period, and that was followed by a takedown with :23 that all but sealed it.

“I’ll give it to him, that was a really good move at the end,” Herbst said.

Christie (21-1) pointed to his conditioning and competitive spirit as deciding factors.

“I can go do that match two more times,” Christie said. “When matches get to the third period, maybe the first and second are closer, but the third period when they start to get tired, I’m starting to turn it on.”

Herbst (33-2) reached the finals with an 8-4 win against Adell Gamboa of Reed-Custer. Herbst trailed 3-1 entering the final period, got a takedown with :44 left, cut Gamboa loose, then got another takedown and three back points in the final :15.

The winning move came when Herbst faked a double-leg takedown, then executed that very move.

“You’ve just got to be able to do your shots,” Herbst said. “I knew my fake’s pretty nice, so I thought I’d be able to hit it again. He’s strong, so I knew there would be a scramble, and I would have to score quickly.”

Herbst won by pin the first two rounds of the tournament. He finished his career with a 115-17 mark, including a fourth-place IHSA state finish at 106 pounds as a sophomore. He had a shoulder injury as a junior.

“I’m happy,” Herbst said. “I’m not totally satisfied, but I’m happy with it.”

Two other area wrestlers, Newman freshman Brady Grennan and Oregon sophomore Seth Stevens, also earned medals.

Grennan (27-3) won four wrestleback bouts to take third place at 113 pounds, capped by a pin of Canton’s Trevor Hodges in 5:14.

“I’m pretty stoked,” Grennan said.

“A freshman isn’t really supposed to do so well in a state tournament, but I kind of proved that wrong.”

final period against Hodges, but a slam of a takedown with 1:28 on the clock was worth five points, and Hodges (244) appeared to injure his right shoulder. Another takedown later in the period led to the pin.

“Confidence was my biggest factor,”

Grennan said.

Stevens placed fifth at 138 pounds, and didn’t have to wrestle in the medal round. His scheduled opponent, Harvard’s Ivan Rosas, was disqualified after being accused of biting his semifinal-round opponent, Dakota’s

Tyler Simmer. Rosas did not wrestle again.

Stevens (28-9) won his first two bouts, then lost to Newman’s Will Rude by pin in 5:19 in the semifinals.

Stevens then lost to Canton’s Andrew Hedges by pin in 1:31 to get a spot in the fifth-place bout.

Stevens was happy to earn a medal, but he would have preferred it be at the IHSA State Tournament in Champaign.

“It’s a tournament that nobody wants to be at in the summer,” Stevens said.

“It’s about having fun, really. I’m typically working by now, but this is good for the kids that wrestle year-round.”

Losing in the third round of wrestlebacks were West Carroll 120-pounder Wyatt Doty and Erie-Prophetstown 285-pounder Elijah Friedrichsen.

Losing in the second round of wrestlebacks were Dixon 113-pounder Chris Sitter, Oregon 113-pounder Edwin Estrada, Newman 120-pounder Carter Rude, West Carroll 152-pounder Kelden McCombie, and Morrison 182-pounder Kayden White.

Fulton 182-pounder Ethan Rash dropped both of his bouts.

Keynon Janicke has been hired as the new head football coach for Forreston High School.

Janicke was hired June 23 by the Forrestville Valley School Board after former head coach Kyle Zick decided to step down from the position.

Zick will remain on staff as an assistant coach as Janicke takes over the head role, a press release said. He became head coach for the Cardinals in 2018.

“Coach Janicke is an alum of Forreston (2012 graduate) and started teaching in Forreston in 2016 after graduating from University of Dubuque in 2016,” the release said. “He’s been an integral part of the Forreston Football staff since 2016, including head coach of our Junior High Football team, head coach of our JV team, and served as a Varsity Coor-

Stevens pinned in his first two matches, taking a half nelson out front at 3:54 to defeat Andrew Hedges of Canton in the first round and pulling Joseph Giatta of El Paso back at the five minute mark.

He hit a hip toss and just missed a pin on eventual champion Will Rude of Newman in the second period of the semifinal, but he got turned with a turk and pinned in the Saturday night at 5:19.

He met Hedges again in the wrestleback semifinal. This time Hedges was ready and took Stevens down and went out front with a half nelson at 1:31.

Hedges finished third. Stevens’ opponent in the fifth place match was disqualified in the semifinal, so he did not have to wrestle.

Estrada got roughed up by eventual fourth place finisher Trevor Hedges of Canton in the opener, dropping a 17-0 technical fall at 3:45. In the first wrestleback, he escaped and got a takedown early in the third period and rode tough the rest of the way to take a 5-0 win.

Estrada scored three escapes in the second round of consolation including one with 25 seconds left but lost a fourth takedown late to be eliminated with a 9-3 loss.

Junior high wrestlers make good showing at tourney

BY RANDY HOLLAND Eight young Hawks participated in the IWCOA Fresh-Soph Championships on last week.

Competing in huge brackets against schools from all three classes, Oregon made a good showing.

Gabe Eckerd took seventh place at 160, winning his first two matches by falls and the medal match 4-0. His losses were to the second and third place medalists.

In the 120 class, Grant Stender had three wins including a pin before he was pinned by the eventual champion.

In the lower bracket, he was pinned by

the wrestler he defeated in the opening round, keeping him out of the medal mix.

Lane Halvorson had two pins to reach the 126 pound quarterfinals where he lost to the third place finisher.

At 132, Anthony Bauer had two pins in consolation, and Dalton McCammon pinned in the preliminary round of the 138 pound wrestlebacks. At 145, Trevor Burkhart had two pins in consolation before losing 8-1. Collin Winterland, 170 pounds, lost two matches by falls. Jonathon Alaniz pinned twice in the 220 pound championship bracket before he lost twice in consolation.

Wear read on July 29 to honor longtime volunteer A longtime Ogle County Fair volunteer and board member will be honored with a day dedicated to his memory at this year’s fair.

Everyone attending the event is encouraged to wear red on Red T-Shirt Day on Thursday, July 29 to honor Harlan Holm, Oregon, for his spirit of volunteerism and innumerable contributions to the fair.

Holm, a community volunteer for more than 25 years and fair board president for 12 years, always wore red work shirts. He also favored red Massey Ferguson farm tractors.

He was known for his willingness to pitch in and help out whenever asked and whatever the project, always with

a smile and friendly word. He gave countless hours to ensure the fair was success year after year.

Holm died unexpectedly on Aug. 25, 2020 at the age of 65.

Friend and fellow fair board member Stan Eden, Oregon, who lived on a neighboring farm, praised Holm’s dedication to his community and his family.

“Harlan would never say no to anything that would help the youth in 4-H, the community, and the fair,” Eden said. “He was an inspiring leader of the Ogle County Fair activities for many years. It was great to have him as a friend. He was generous, kind, hard-working, and loved his family. ”

Holm grew up on his family’s farm near Oregon, graduated from Oregon High School in 1973, and earned a degree in ag mechanics from Kishwaukee Community College in 1975.

He worked at Polo Motors for six years and farmed with his parents. He returned to full-time farming in 1979.

He and his wife Patricia raised their son and two daughters on the family farm.

The 167th Ogle County Fair will be held July 28-Aug. 1 at the Ogle County Fairgrounds on Lime Kiln Road, just off Ill. 64 a mile west of Oregon.

This family friendly and now traditional 4th of July community event is also a fundraiser for Northwest Illinois Special Olympics, as Lois worked with developmentally disabled adults as her vocation and also supports the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

Pound the Pavement is a scenic

walk/fun run that travels approximately 4 miles around the streets of Mt. Morris. It followed the route that Lois walked every day, in any kind of weather.

Over the past years support has exceeded $130,000 and is allocated to the above organizations.

PUBLIC VOICE Thanks to all who helped make Chana School Museum Benefit Sale a success To the Editor, The Chana School Foundation would like to thank all the folks and organizations that helped to make this 2021 annual fundraiser to benefit the Chana School Museum a success.

The event was a great example of many people coming together to make something happen. Some people donated items, some people hauled items, some people sorted and displayed items, some people worked as clerks, some people cleaned up after the event, but all the people worked for the same goal.

The goal of raising funds for the old museum. This was the 23rd year for the annual sale. This year’s sale was the biggest sale by the number of donations and the amount of money raised.

We appreciate the Oregon and surrounding communities rallying to provide items for the sale. There are many to thank for their efforts to help make this year’s event happen.

First, we would like to thank the City of Oregon and the CMAAA Foundation for allowing us to use the Oregon Coliseum for this year’s annual benefit sale. The coliseum is located in the heart of Oregon making it easy for folks near and from afar to find the event.

We appreciate the Oregon Chamber Director, Liz Vos, for all her communication help both online and on signage in Oregon. She helped pull music and other organizations together for Saturday of the fundraiser.

A big “thank you” to Earleen Hinton of the Ogle County Newspapers and Brad Jennings of the Ogle County Life for their support in running articles , so the public would know about donating items and volunteering for the event. The newspapers were vital for the success of the event.

Our pickup crew worked a long day hauling large items. Ray Gruber, Dave Starke, Dave Stenger, Jerry Bowers, Brian Grover, and Gary Stauffer deserve a big “thank you” for their hard work in bringing items to the coliseum for the sale.

Volunteers, Volunteers, Volunteers! The Chana School Foundation would not exist if it weren’t for volunteers. This year’s sale was the largest and best yet thanks to all the

many donations and volunteers who came forward to do their part in helping with the sale.

We are happy that the Grand Detour Green 4H Group worked two mornings to help carry items into the coliseum and sort items.

The Chana School Museum was saved through the efforts of school children. Children have helped in many fundraisers through the years. This year the youngsters of the Grand Detour Green 4H Group stepped forward to help.

Once again the Chana School Foundation would like to thank everyone who helped to make our annual sale a huge success.

We are a not for profit organization that gets no tax support. We maintain the 1883 Chana School Museum through donations, the talents of volunteers, grants, and fundraisers.

Both days must be attended to receive the certification.

The registration fee of $10 covers course materials and lunch both days.

My take on good, bad in state, local government COMMENTARY L

ast week was to be final column until the fall sports seasons begin, but a few more things need to be discussed. Let’s start with the good and bad of local and state government.

The good example comes from a grass roots effort

by Mt. Morris citizens and the open-mindedness of the Oregon school board in agreeing to delay its final vote on the closure of DLR school for 60 days.

Like Superintendent’s Tom Mahoney’s well-researched proposal to close DLR, an Advisory Board from Mt. Morris, led by Rob Urish, articulated its point quite well. This was no fly-by-night wild rambling of an angry citizenry, as what often happens when an emotional public issue comes up.

With the Oregon board willing to listen, can the community leaders from Mt. Morris come up with a plan that makes sense in keeping DLR open?

In sticky decisions like this, occasionally someone comes up with a brilliant idea or critical fact that hadn’t been considered, effectively changing the mindset of the project.

And, there are some sharp individuals working on the behest of Mt. Morris, as demonstrated by those that addressed the board.

One argument passionately made concerned the devastating effect the closure would have on Mt. Morris. The dilemma faced by the school board is fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers versus the social, economic and emotional toll on a town. Ultimately, a school board needs to do what is best for the district.

That may sound callous, but it is true. Here’s hoping a scenario presents itself that will benefit both entities.

Now on to the bad and that concerns the state of Illinois.

The Franklin Creek State Natural Area was looking for volunteers to help with trial work. The call went out to a lot of trail runners like myself who have benefited from using Franklin Creek.

Of course we would want to help. Giving back is part of the unwritten code of being a trail runner anywhere in this country.

However, we soon discovered it wasn’t quite as simple as showing up to help on the designated days. In a complete turn off to many of us, the Illinois DNR requires volunteers fill out an extensive background check, a criminal history check, sign a waiver and also give a copy of one’s driver’s license.

What is wrong with this state that so such a bureaucratic morass is leveled at kind-hearted folks with a desire to help out?

Some of us will be contacting our state rep Tom Demmer to register our complaints.

Franklin Creek isn’t too happy with it either, as it the higher ups who have made these dictates. All

Franklin asks for is a simple 1-page waiver form.

With all the paperwork, there must be a legal component to all of this, one that continues to do society more harm than good.

A couple other items: Kyle Zick stepped down as Forreston football coach and will be replaced by hometown product Kenyon Janicke.

After I received notification of this via e-mail from Kyle, I immediately sent him back a message thanking him for being gracious with his time as the head coach, being fun to talk to and his honestly in assessing his team.

Not all coaches are that easy to work with, especially head coaches in football and basketball. He quickly responded to any queries I had and was quite accessible for post-game interviews.

Overall, Forreston is outstanding in how their coaches provide information to the media. I trust Kenyon Janicke will be as easy to work with as coach Zick.

The state wrestling tournament is in the books and credit to the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association for putting this on. Instrumental in this was Roy Snyder, formerly of Mt. Morris and current president of the association.

Platitudes from parents all over the state came in on the behalf of the IWCOA on its Facebook page.

Many a parent commented that they felt let down by the IHSA and the state of Illinois as a whole for not allowing a post season to be held and were grateful the IWCOA volunteers, both behind the scenes and upfront in filling the void.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF June 25 Regino Mercade, 21, of Genoa, was arrested at 7:49 a.m. for driving while suspended following a traffic stop at Illinois 251 and Carrie Avenue, Rochelle. Mercade was also wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Dekalb County. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Devin McDaniel, 42 of Rochelle, was arrested at 7:44 p.m. for not having a valid

driver’s license following a traffic stop at the intersection of Flagg Road and Scare Road, west of Rochelle. McDaniel was released on an Individual Bond and will appear in Ogle County Circuit Court at a later date.

At 8:27 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 1000 block of N. Meridian Road. Chana, for a report of a disturbance. After an investigation, Mason J. Wolter, 21, of Chana, was arrested for domestic battery and criminal damage to property.

Wolter was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was being held pending a court appearance.

June 27 Guillermo Rodriguez-Gonzalez, 39, of Chicago was arrested at 9:12 p.m. for driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding, 97 mph in a 70 mph zone, on I88 at mile marker 77. Guillermo also received citations for speeding, no insurance, unlawful transportation of alcohol, and no front registration. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 29 At 2:54 p.m., deputies responded to the intersection of Ashelford Drive and North

Illinois Route 2 in rural Byron to an accident involving injuries.

Two cars were involved. A car driven by Elizabeth Hinshaw, 18, of Oregon struck the rear of a stopped car driven by Robert Koritz, 84, of Byron. Koritz and his wife, Joyce, 82, were not injured.

The only passenger in Hinshaw’s car was Whitney Kirk, 18 of Oregon. Both Hinshaw and Kirk were transported to Swedish American Hospital for minor injuries.

The Byron Police Department, The Byron Fire Protection District, and D & W Towing assisted at the scene of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.

June 11 At 3:56 p.m., police took a report of a hit and run that had occurred in the 100 block of S. 8th Street where an unknown vehicle hit a parked 2014 Chrysler belonging to Steve Gruenberg, 49, of Oregon. Anyone with any information please contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162.

June 15 James A. Edgar, II, 68, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 2:20 p.m. for violating the grass ordinance by allowing the grass on his property to be taller than six inches in height. This violation occurred in the 300 block of Mix Street.

Kendra N.F. Elliott, 24, of Stillman Valley, was arrested at 7:16 p.m. for driving while license revoked. Elliott was also issued citations for operating a vehicle while registration is suspended for noninsurance and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Elliott was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of River Road.

June 17 Caleb J. S. Henson, 21, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 1:16 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Kristin N. Coggins, 20, of Janesville, Wisconsin, was issued citations at 5:22 a.m. for speeding, 54mph in a 30mph zone and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

June 19 Thomas E. McDonald, 40, of Sterling, was issued citations at 12:30 a.m. for failure to signal within 100 feet of turning and speeding, 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. These violations occurred in the 500 block of Gale Street.

Kevin H. Siefken, 40, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, was issued a citation at 9:50 a.m. for speeding, 44 mph in a 30 mph zone.

two-vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot of Ace Hardware/Snyder Pharmacy, 201 N. 4th Street, involving a 2003 Chevrolet driven by Sherry R. Deliso, 70, of Oregon, and a parked 2019 Ford belonging to Force Electric Tech, LLC, Oregon. No citations were issued.

Robert M. Disch, 50, of Oregon, was arrested at 7:19 p.m. for the Class 4 felony of driving while license revoked. Disch was also issued citations for operating a vehicle with an expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver.

Disch was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred at the intersection of 10th and Webster Streets.

June 25 Debra A. Johnson, 53, of Byron, was issued a citation at 8:15 p.m. for speeding, 43 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 700 block of N. 4th Street.

MARGARET E. WORLEY

MT. MORRIS - Margaret Ellen (Ray) Worley passed away on June 25, 2021 at the age of 94.

Margaret was born on Aug. 30, 1926 to Arthur and Fay (Simmons) Ray. She grew up on the family farm, helping her father with the outdoor work while her sister helped their mom with the indoor work.

She graduated from Roseville High School and studied at Western Illinois University, after which she taught at a one-room school during World War II.

Margaret married J.R. Worley on Sept. 1, 1946 after his return from service. They moved to Mt. Morris where they had two children, Jo and Chris.

Margaret became active in the Disciples of Christ Christian Church as the church organist and participated in the outreach ministries they provided.

Margaret was also involved in the community, participating in the community choir, interfaith activities, 4-H leader, member of Mt. Morris Women’s Club and PEO. She took a job at Ridenour Insurance Agency when they needed interim help, and ended up staying for 30-plus years.

Margaret was an excellent baker, providing many decorated cakes for family and friends.

She loved her roses, although one time she confused the poison container for the watering container, killing all her roses.

She was also an excellent seamstress, spending countless hours sewing clothing for her family, even suits and ties for her husband. She knitted sweaters, crocheted,cross-stitched - she did it all.

Her apple dumplings were absolutely the best ever. But her greatest accomplishment was her dedication to her children, unwavering support for her husband and eventually her grandchildren.

In retirement Margaret and her husband enjoyed travel and visiting family.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Jo (Mike) Sanders and Chris (Steve) Stabile; five grandchildren, Nis Lovstad, James and

Evan Sanders, Olivia (Steve) Schiller, and Jesse (Lauren) Stabile; six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Hunter Lovstad, Jon and Christopher Schiller, and Jack and Ellie Stabile; and three nephews, Larry, Jerry, and Tom Gearhart.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Fay (Simmons) Ray; husband, J.R. Worley; and sister, Evelyn Gearhart.

A private family service will be held in Plainview Cemetery, Mt. Morris. Memorials to PEO Chapter KP, in care of Sue Halloran, PO Box 314, Paris, IL 61944.
