PACT to present twist on Snow White story July 16-18 at Louise Quick Park

If you want to see a twist on the traditional “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” mark your calendar July 16-18.

The Polo Community Theatre is presenting “Snow White, The Evil Queen, and the Three Slobs” at 7 p.m. at the Louise D. Quick Park in downtown Polo.

Admission is by a free-will donation.

The plot for the show is: Snow White is a dirt-smudged stable girl, innocent to the point of cluelessness, whose stepmother, the Queen, must be the most beautiful woman in all the land.

But when the Magic Mirror informs the Queen that Snow White has the gift of inner beauty, the Queen goes beserk with

jealousy. Fleeing into the woods, Snow White finds the House of the Three Slobs.

Therein live Grouchy, Snivelly, and Slacker.

This past Saturday, Charlotte and I headed up to Rockford for an afternoon of shopping and lunch. We tried a restaurant that was new to us and shops that were favorites to us both. We had a wonderful time visiting since we know these trips will be coming to an end soon.

On Wednesday, Clint and I connected for a video chat. It was so nice to see his face and get to talk with him. The more than half day difference in time disappeared for a little while. He is doing well and excited for a few upcoming tasks.

I have mentioned before about the ongoing work to remove the weeds from the front of my house. There is an ivy that grows over everything. I have tried spraying it and pulling it, but it keeps coming back with gusto.

Right now, it is covering the roses and lilies that are still managing to bloom despite the growing vines. The broad leaves of the mystery ivy are robbing the soil of moisture, but the flowers and bushes are still growing.

It seems the blossoms know that the sun and rain are still there, so they keep

growing. We can easily be overcome by the stress, sadness, and loneliness of everyday life. Each day, the challenges of the day try to rob us of the joys.

God takes care of the flowers around my home, so I know He takes care of me.

The blooms move toward the sun, just like we wake and face each day with hope. We can be reassured that we are strong enough to keep going.

Being a Christian will not eliminate the obstacles. Instead, walking with Jesus gives us the strength and comfort to face any challenge that comes our way. I am thankful for friends who remind me that everything will be okay.

We can learn more about His strength by studying the Bible, spending time in prayer, and by attending one of the many churches in our area. Belonging to a church family reminds us that we are not alone.

I hope to see you next week in our little church in the country. Come and meet others in our congregation in our new worship space. You are always welcome to join us in prayer, praise, and worship.

This morning at church, we were greeted by Don Hay. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe continued her sermon series, Summer of Grace. Our service can be seen on Sunday mornings at 10:00 on our Facebook page.

Charlotte offers a midweek, mid-day moment to help us all refresh during our busy week. Like many other churches, we turned to Facebook during the height of the pandemic. Now that we are meeting in person, Charlotte has continued to post services and prayer time for everyone.

This afternoon, my friend Teresa and I went over to Timberlake for the production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” The company was marvelous in the performance making

azoellner@shawmedia.com After a year of planning for an event they weren’t sure was going to happen because of COVID-19, organizers of ByronFest say it “went fabulously.”

“We kind of just went at it as if it was going to happen,” ByronFest Manager Nick Peterson said. “You can’t plan a festival in two months.”

The 34th annual ByronFest took place July 9-11, with Gospel Fest as a kickoff event on July 8.

There were no COVID-related restrictions because the event was held outside, Peterson said. He added that it was nerve-wracking coming back after a year off and with several new faces — himself included — behind the scenes.

“We were nervous, yet excited,” Peterson said. “There were a lot of firsts, (but) we all knew it was something we were excited to get back out and do.”

Among the staple events were the two band stages, the carnival, ByronFest 5K, the bags tournament and the quilt show.

New this year was the Friends with Special Needs Program held on July 10, where anyone with a disability was invited to come enjoy free carnival rides, Peterson said.

“We had a really, really, really positive great turnout for that,” he said.

Between 120 and 130 families and children attended the event, with some parents and organizers moved to tears, Peterson said. Not all of the rides were open in consideration of those with light and sound sensitivities.

“It was emotional,” he said. “It was a super cool event to see. And it was super rewarding to be able to see those kiddos – and adults as well – having the time of their life.”

YOUR ENVIRONMENT Ogle County’s solid waste plan update available for public comment The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department is updating its five-year Solid Waste Management Plan and is inviting county residents to comment.

The 2021 draft plan update is now available for public review, and comments on the plan may be made by Ogle County residents and businesses until Sept. 28.

Comments must be submitted in writing to the OCSWMD,

The plan can be found on the OCSWMD website at oglecounty.org. Printed copies are also available for viewing at the Ogle County Clerk’s Office and at the OCSWMD.

The Draft Plan was written by OCSWMD staff after forming and meeting with a Citizen’s Advisory Committee, which provided input into the process.

The purpose of the update is to review the recommendations and tasks in the existing plan, discuss various waste management options, consider suggestions from the advisory committee, and to propose new recommendations for the 2021 Solid Waste Management Plan Update to the Ogle County Board for their approval.

Jamboree: The Jimmys July 16; The StingRays July 23 The Jimmys will return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, July 16 at 7 p.m. in the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell “The Jimmys will return with a big, happy blast of joyful noise, touring in support of their latest CD, “She’s Gotta Have It”, said Larry Ubben, organizer. “As one of the hottest tickets on the summer festival circuit and recent recipients of many more Madison Area Music Awards, Jimmy and his stellar group bring their high energy show back to our free Friday night Mt. Morris Jamboree for a two-hour performance.”

The band is comprised of keyboardist/singer/songwriter Jimmy Voegeli: Perry Weber, veteran blues guitarist/ singer/songwriter; Chris Sandoval on drums; John Wartenweiler, bass lines and deep groove; Amateur Horn Stars - Pete Ross, saxophone; Mike Boman, trumpet; and Joe Goltz on trombone.

Combined, the band has 40+ years experience touring the world with Clyde Stubblefield , the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Youngblood Brass Band, BB King and his All Stars and others.

Concessions for the evening will be provided by Hector’s Cocina, serving a variety of delicious Mexican delicacies starting at 6 p.m.

“Local small business vendors will often be joining us on the Campus, including Ken’s Black Pearl Coffee and Grandpa’s Ice Cream truck. The next door Encore Art Gallery will be featuring the Regional Artist’s Showcase, presenting the works of seven different artists from around the region open from 6:30 - 9 p.m.,” Ubben said.

Encore’s Artist in Residence, Annie Timmer will be hosting kids art activities near the Freedom Bell just to the north of the Band Shell during the concert.

The whole evening kicks off with the Mt. Morris Community Farmer’s Market, located nearby from 4 -7 every Friday through October.

“Come join the fun on our beautiful, historic Campus in the center of Mt.

Morris, two blocks south of Rt. 64 on Wesley Ave and be ready to dance the night away and have a rollicking good time,” Ubben said.

In the event of inclement weather, the rain location will be in the Pinecrest Grove Community Center, 500 Evergreen Lane, seven blocks south of Illinois 64 off of McKendrie Street.

The StingRays Friday, July 23

Chicago’s Oldie’s Rock and Roll Band, The StingRays, will perform at the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell for a free 2 hour concert on Friday, July 23 from 7-9 p.m.

“The Mt. Morris Jamboree is pleased to announce the highly anticipated return of The SingRays,” said Ubben. “Everyone fortunate enough to

see previous shows by this exciting and engaging act will fondly remember the dynamic stage presence of this wonderful band and will attest to the ‘do not miss’ grade level of their show.”

Ubben said The StingRays play the “greatest music ever written and play it with the energy, passion and authenticity of the artists whose music they love”.

The band features Frank Rowley on bass and vocals, Al Wagner on drums and vocals, John Quinn on keys, guitar and vocals and John D. on lead guitar and vocals.

The Mt. Morris Moose Lodge will be serving food and drink concessions for the show, starting at 6 p.m.

Vintage base ball team hopes to do better at this year’s event

A local base ball team again steps up to the plate next month at the 18th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball.

The Oregon Ganymedes will join their fellow base ball players in Dearborn, Michigan, on Aug. 14 and 15 to play America’s pastime “the way it’s supposed to be played”.

The Ganymedes downed the Creston Regulators 13-3 on Sunday at the “Iron Chest Field” located at Oregon Park East by the historic Chana School.

Ruby Nash taught 2,300+ students during her career Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

By OTTO DICK Miss Ruby Nash was born on a farm near Davis Junction on March 28, 1874 and moved to Oregon as a small girl.

She lived at 111 North Sixth Street 44 years in the house her father Chester built. She was one of the founders of the Ogle County Historical Society and a charter member.

Ruby Nash was an elementary teacher for 50 years in Ogle County.

(1891-1941). She started her career in a one-room country school located in Scott Township north of Davis Junction.

She taught in Oregon for 48 years and for 43 years she taught first grade.

She taught more than 2,300 students.

This would average out to more than 40 students in each class.

In 1935 a portrait of Ruby was painted by her former student Ted Johnson who studied at the Art Institute in Chicago. On Sept. 15, 1958, Ted

Ruby’s footprints are many and very visible today. These include the Ogle County Historical Center, the Oregon Park District Nash Recreation

Center, the entrance sign at the Riverside Cemetery and Nash School.

Nash suggested the name Ganymede and presented information about Ganymede on a file card to restaurant owner Harold Beaty. “From Greek Mythology, the story of a Trojan youth who attracted the notice of Jupiter who sent his angel to kidnap the youth to become the cupbearer to the Gods.

Harold said they were not so sure about the mythological name but we lived with it.” Ruby acquired a painting of Ganymede Spring and sold the painting to Harold that was hung in the dining room.

Ruby Nash left a fund to have stone pillars installed at the Riverside Cemetery entrance. The cemetery board dedicated the pillars to Ruby in 1964.

Close to 700 people turned out for the affair. Gerald Garard presented the talk for the dedication ceremony, “It was a fond commemoration to a woman who gave so much of herself to the community”.

A list of women that had a large impact on this area would include Ruby Nash. Others on this list would include Margaret Fuller, Rebecca Kauffman (White Pines State Park), and Laura Fessler (Iron Mike).

Congress School built in 1899; overcrowded by 1921

C

ongress School was built in 1899 but by Sept. 15, 1921 the school was over crowded.

This statement was made: “Pupils will soon be suspended by ropes from windows between recitation periods if the present congestion continues.”

The building was built to accommodate 200 – 250 and they had 400.

They had started looking at the possibility of building a high school somewhere in the vicinity of Congress. Even though the economic situation was not good, they felt it would eventually be better. If the new school was built close by, both buildings could utilize the same heating plant. They could use some of the same teachers in both buildings.

The teachers could also walk to the golf course which was nearby and that would be good exercise.

Any student driving their horse and buggy to school would still be close to downtown and the hitch barns for the horses.

Also the athletic field would still be close by.

Remember that small athletic field to the west of Congress?

The first voting on September 22, 1921 found the school bond was defeated. The controversy went on and 500 signatures were needed to call for another election.

On Nov. 15, 1921 the Community School Bond won 525-483. In the voting the site of where to put the school did not get a majority so that part would be left up to the board. Then came the question of the

Polo Historical Society legality of the whole thing and where should the building be.

It was now into September of 1922 and it would take two more years to test the legality of the school district.

David Frey of the school board challenged the community to build a high school since the high school was without a home and had been renting space from the Polo Grade School. He felt the high school needed to be concerned about its own wellbeing.

On April 30, 1925 the community voted again and the high school lost 1,050 to 465. Now it was being considered that high school students would have to go to other communities for high school and the rent would be so high that people could not afford it.

A Milledgeville newspaper editorial stated, “Polo Community High School organized for 5 years and still no school. Shame on you Polo.”

Another vote in August found the school still turned down but people were beginning to realize they could not do without a high school in Polo. A September vote passed by 254 votes. PCHS had become a reality and building began. The entrance would face south on Mason Street.

There were still some holdouts who continued to attempt to have the whole school district dissolved and another vote was taken in April of 1926. That plot failed and the school continued to be built.

This was stated in the paper, “And when the smoke of battle cleared away, one side had nothing to celebrate while the other was too exhausted to celebrate.”

The building that we now call Aplington School was the result of a hard fought fight.

The formal opening was April of 1927 and K. O. Davis of Davis Greenhouse furnished flowers, potted plants, and a “long box of geraniums for the occasion.”

15-year-old boy facing four felony weapons charges Sterling teen charged after July 4 incident at Dixon Petunia Festival

DIXON – The Sterling 15-year-old accused of flashing a loaded handgun at the Petunia Festival on the Fourth of July is facing four felony weapons charges.

The boy, whom Lee County Court Judge Theresa Friel-Draper ordered not be identified by Sauk Valley Media, is charged with three counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one of possession of a firearm by a person younger than 18.

If convicted of the first two, which involve having the weapon on school grounds (the Petunia Festival carnival was set up at Dixon High School), he could be detained with the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice for 2 to 5 years; unlawful use of a weapon at a public gathering and the possession

charge each carry potential detention of 1 to 3 years.

He also faces four misdemeanor counts: unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm without a FOID card, possession of firearm ammunition without a FOID card, and aggravated assault, which stems from a verbal threat investigators said he made to another boy. All carry a potential 30 days in a juvenile detention center.

The 15-year-old, who made an initial court appearance last week, will be on home confinement and must wear an electronic ankle bracelet while his case proceeds.

According to testimony from Detective Lincoln Sharp, lead investigator: Around 8:10 p.m., Dixon police officers on bikes, who were patrolling the Petunia Festival, were approached by a person who said that a group of juveniles was starting fights with people, and that they had “jumped his friend” and had “pistol-whipped” him.

Twenty minutes later, as officers were looking for the group, they were notified of a fight at the carnival entrance. A teen boy told them that

another boy flashed a gun he had in his waistband and said “Don’t mess with me or you are going to get smoked.”

Shortly after that, officers stopped two boys who matched the description, told them to put their hands up and found that one was carrying brass knuckles, and the other had a revolver loaded with six .32-caliber rounds tucked into his pants.

The boy with the gun was taken into custody, and during the interview, told officers he bought it the day before for self-defense because another group of juveniles also at the carnival had been bothering him and his friends.

It appears the gun actually may have been stolen from a vehicle in Rock Falls; that investigation is continuing, Sharp testified.

There were reports of others at the carnival with guns, which prompted Dixon police to evacuate the Peoria Avenue Bridge that night, but no other suspects were found, police said.

The boy was released to his mother July 7 after the hearing. He will live with her and his grandmother at his grandmother’s house, his mother testified.

Darla A. Foulker was appointed to represent him. Loryn Scott is the assistant state’s attorney who is handling the prosecution.

His next hearing is July 26.

This is not the boy’s first brush with the law. He has a pending Whiteside County Court case, filed in late 2019 or early 2020, in which he is accused of getting into a fight at Challand Middle School with another student.

According to his mother, her son saw another boy hit a girl and stepped in.

Officials are very busy making final touches for this year’s event From the queen pageant to carnival rides to the livestock shows, the 167th Ogle County Fair set for July 28-Aug. 1 offers no-stop entertainment at an affordable cost to fair-goers of all ages.

“The fair is family-oriented and affordable,” said Tom Simpson, fair board president.

The fair begins with the crowning the 2021 fair queen on Wednesday, July 28 and features the traditional grand stand shows — truck and tractor pulls on Wednesday and Thursday, Big Hat Rodeo on Friday, and the demolition derby on Saturday.

Simpson said this year’s fair will feature a new Sunday event. Popular blues and rhythm & blues band The Jimmys will perform a free concert in the grandstands from 1 to 4 p.m.

“Since it’s a new event we’re not planning to charge. We’re going to accept donations since it’s our first time out of the gate with music,” he said.

The Jimmys, led by keyboardist and organist Jimmy Voegeli, have performed across the Midwest, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean and draw record-setting crowds to the Mt. Morris Jamboree with their annual performances.

Also new this year is Red T-Shirt Day on Thursday to honor the late Harlan Holm, who died unexpectedly last August.

Holm, long time fair and community volunteer, was noted for the red T-shirts he wore while working at the fairgrounds. He was fair board president for 12 years.

“The day will be dedicated to Harlan Holm and everyone is encouraged to wear a red T-shirt in his honor,” Simpson said. “A ceremony will be

Eagle Scout helps German Valley Food Pantry 16-year-old’s project improves safety and comfort when deliveries arrive to food pantry

azoellner@shawmedia.com Five steep steps are what separate shipments received by the German Valley Food Pantry and the room in which they’re stored.

And those steps are not an easy

climb with bags of groceries in hand.

“We were concerned for the safety of the clients coming out with the groceries, and also it was a challenge for many people who serve on the board who bring the food up the stairs,” said Carolyn Sluiter, a member of the German Valley Food Pantry’s board.

But thanks to the work of 16-yearold Logan Miller, navigating those five steps is now much safer.

Miller, a member of Forreston Boy Scout Troop No. 781, built a height-adjustable stand for a rolling conveyor belt, negating the need to carry anything up or down the staircase.

“I had been looking for some ideas

for my Eagle Scout project, and originally was thinking of boxes of canned goods,” he said. “I got a hold of the foot pantry and she (Sluiter) was talking about how she needed some idea to get the packages up and inside better because they were always having to fight those stairs.”

The original plan set aside, Miller had a new goal in mind.

“I was really looking to make it easier for them to bring the packages in and out of the food pantry,” he said.

Planning, developing and completing “a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community” is one of the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout rank, according to the Boy Scouts of America’s website. The project must be approved by the benefiting organization, the troop’s leader and unit committee and the council or district before it commences.

Miller currently holds the rank of Life Scout, which is just below Eagle Scout.

It took Miller about a month working with his grandfather, parents, uncle, brother and some other Boy

Scouts to figure out the best way to make the conveyor belt stand’s height easily to adjust.

“We built it so it would go up and be adjustable, but it was too hard to go down,” he said of their first attempt.

“So we took it all apart again and found a different way to do it where it’s got these poles that snap right in for the height.”

The final product adjusts from a low of about 1- or 2 feet off the ground to more than 4 feet high, Miller said.

The new addition to the food pantry first was used July 7, when the monthly delivery — the one that contains between 1,500 pounds and 1 ton of product — from the Northern Illinois Food Bank arrived, Sluiter said.

“Logan did a very nice job of taking care of it from start to finish,” Sluiter said. “It was his project. He took control, and he did a very good job with it.”

Having completed the requirements, Miller said his promotion to Eagle Scout will take place within the next month.

Simpson also reminded fair-goers that the $8 admission fee is family-friendly because of all it included.

Besides free unlimited carnival rides, the fee also covers ground shows, such as Dan Dan the Farmer Man Comedy Rainmaker Shows and the Wild World of Animals.

“A lot of stuff is included in the $8,” he said.

For even more savings, admission tickets can be purchased in advance at a cost of $6 per person, a $2 discount from the gate price, at Casey’s General Stores and a few other locations.

Signs will be posted designating where tickets are available.

Discounted tickets for the grandstand shows are also available in advance at the same locations, at a cost of $8 per person, also $2 less than the $10 regular price.

Children age 3 and younger get into the fair free but each will need a $4 wristband to ride at the carnival. Wristbands are available at the gate.

Publicity director Carol Magnuson urged the public to take a look at the projects done by adults, as well as local 4-H club members and other youth.

“4-H Club projects are what we usually think of, but we also have adult and junior open shows,” she said.

Their efforts will be on display throughout the fair. The project shows cover a wide array of topics from traditional livestock, foods, vegetables and fruits, clothing and crafts, floriculture to beekeeping, electricity, woodworking, and computer science.

Other entertainment throughout fair includes Dan Dan the Farmer Man Comedy Rainmaker Shows, the Wild World of Animals, Ta-Da Robots, and Chainsaw Carver Dave Ferrell. Shows will be held at various times every day of the fair.

Also returning is the Brian Holt Magic Show with performances on Friday and Saturday.

Other musical groups will perform at the Lions Shelter will be Jim Wolber & the Lariat Band on Thursday, July 29, First Friday on Friday, July 30, and John Lindhorst & Strummers on Saturday, July 31. Shows are from 7:30 to 10 p.m. each evening.

A farewell for Matt Henkel at PrairieView Golf Club

bweidman@shawmedia.com Somewhere up above, Matt Henkel was looking down on his beloved PrairieView Golf Club in Byron on July 8 and smiling.

It was filled with golfers, 58 of them for a morning outing and 87 more in the afternoon. They hit some awesome shots on a warm, sunny day, some that were not so awesome, had a few cold drinks and swapped some tales.

The only thing missing was Henkel, who spent a good chunk of his waking hours the last two decades keeping PrairieView in pristine condition. He died on May 19, after a 13-year battle with brain cancer. He was 42.

Rather than have a traditional funeral, Henkel wanted a golf outing for his family and friends. It was held at PrairieView. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Wee One Foundation, which helps golf course management professionals and their dependents who incur overwhelming expenses due to medical hardships.

He leaves behind his wife, Cammie, and children Ashton, Claire and Mara.

Cammie could not have been more pleased with how the day went.

“It was exactly what Matt wanted,” Cammie said. “He didn’t want the kids to have to go through the funeral experience. His life was so wonderful and blessed that he just wanted everyone to enjoy what he enjoyed. He always said he had the best office in the world, and that’s this golf course.

“He just wanted to share the love with everybody. Today was super important. Matt was so caring and humble, and he wanted to give back to the superintendent brotherhood, and the Wee One Foundation is that. They were there for us when we needed them, so this day is about giving back and helping others.”

Endless stories of Henkel’s kindness, loyalty, work ethic and athletic prowess, just to name a few of his attributes, were told throughout the day.

Many of those stories came from his best buds from the Amboy High School class of 1997. Nick Dinges fondly remembers his days playing youth baseball with Henkel.

“We played baseball together from T-Ball on up, and were together on some pretty tremendous Sublette baseball teams,” Dinges said. “We had the old Navy blue, nylon uniforms with the white stripe on the side. One of the best memories is we played in a Little League tournament with Whitey [Chris Streit], Scott Full and that whole group, and we played against Plainfield. I don’t know if Plainfield knew where Sublette was, because we had our fancy uniforms on with the high socks, and we ended up winning the tournament.

Jaron McCracken, who is fighting (and winning) his own battle with brain cancer and shared many trips to

the hospital with Henkel, used the word “great” several times in describing Henkel.

“He was one of the best,” McCracken said. “We started in fifth grade and played all the way through our senior year, and he was one of the best. He could score with the best of them. He was a great teammate, a great friend, a great everything, and I miss him dearly.”

A 2001 graduate of Illinois State University, Henkel began at PrairieView as an intern, then an assistant, and by 2010, was the head superintendent.

In 2018, he added the title of general manager, and was instrumental in the the building of PrairieFire Golf and Grill on the PrairieView driving range.

PrairieFire is a year-round targeted driving range full of modern amenities.

Those who worked for and with Henkel will forever remember him.

Kayla Miller is in her fifth year at PrairieView. She works on the grounds crew in the morning, and also works as a bartender and on the beer

cart.

“My first year here, there were a bunch of people around ages 18 to 23,” Miller said. “It was all of our first years or second years, so we were new to the equipment on the course. He taught us so many things. There were multiple times some things would break on a mower or we’d have multiple irrigation leaks, by us kids messing things up. We’d be so afraid to tell him at first, because we didn’t want to disappoint him. It would be so funny because he’d be the one telling us it wasn’t a big deal. He had so much patience and never got mad. It was insane, for all of the things that we had done.”

The day ended with a heartfelt speech from Cammie Henkel, who touched on many aspects of life her husband enhanced. At the core, however, was their marriage of nearly 20 years, their three children and the adventures they shared.

“Every day, he kept coming to work. He was here at 2:30 in the morning and never complained about it.”

The Ganymedes are returning to the world stage of historic base ball (spelled as two words in the early 1900s) after their last appearance in 2019. There was no tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teams from throughout the Midwest will square off against each other during this year’s event on the Walnut Gr ove fi elds at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village. The event commemorates the original World’s Base Ball Tournament held in Detroit, Michigan, in 1867.

In 2019, the Oregon-based team was one of a dozen teams from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The Oregon-based team was competitive, but winless against three competitors: the Saginaw Old Golds, the Black Flags of Drovertown, and the Lah-De-Das. “We had many great plays, but too many errors,” Herman said.

This year’s team hopes to have a better showing this year. “2019 was the first time in 5 years that we didn’t win at least 2 games,” he said, noting that the team’s “award” that year was a bag of peanuts.

Teen & Adult Summer Reading Challenge Presenting a new Teen & Adult Summer Reading Challenge at Bertolet Memorial Library! Reading is its own reward, but by signing up for our summer reading program, you have a chance to win prizes!

People know the proceeds are donated to Serenity Hospice and Home so they donate because they believe in the cause,” said Karen Virnoche, sale founder. “Many people, in the 9 counties Serenity serves in Northern Illinois, know of or have had someone cared for by Serenity.”

The 2021 sale is the third annual sale to benefit Serenity.

“This will be a special year. Several donations were made again from people moving out of state or selling their homes, but the biggest donation came from our local store, Neighbors, that closed its doors,” Virnoche said.

County offering recycling of paint and oil Aug 14

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department is offering a latex paint, used motor oil, and aerosol can recycling event on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to noon at 909 Pines Road.

The event is for Ogle County residents only and no permit is required.

Identification will be checked upon entry to the event and a short survey will be taken.

The Illinois Recovery Group, illinoisrecoverygroupinc.com will be on site with their vacuum truck to collect and recycle used motor oil, anti-freeze, and used oil filters. There is a limit of 200 gallons per vehicle, and 55-gallon drums will be pumped out on site.

All containers will be returned for reuse or proper disposal. Plastic containers with used oil or other automo-

tive fluid residues cannot be recycled.

There is no charge to residents for this service. For amounts more than 200 gallons, contact the OCSWMD (at 815-732-4020) for information on direct service from IRG. Earthpaint, earthpaint.org also will be on site collecting containers of liquid latex paint for recycling.

The OCSWMD will subsidize a portion of the recycling costs for residents. The cost to recycle latex paint are as follows for up to 10 containers, quart, $1/container, gallon, $2 and 5-gallon pail $8.

Residents will pay full price to recycle over 10 containers, which is: $2.50 quart, $5 gallon, and $18 for 5-gallon pail. Bring paint in original containers only, and do not mix paint together as then it cannot be recycled.

Only liquid latex paint is accepted, no dried out containers or oil-based paints accepted. Cash, card, or check made out to Earthpaint accepted for payment.

FlatCan Recycling, flatcanrecycling.com will be on site to collect aerosol spray cans and single-use (1416 once) propane tanks.

The OCSWMD will fully subsidize residents’ first 10 items brought in for recycling. Additional items residents pay $1 can and $2 propane tank.

Accepted aerosol products include spray paints, insecticides, auto care-lubricants, personal care products, household cleaners, and food products.

See the OCSWMD website or Facebook page for a full list of accepted aerosol products. Some aerosol products will not be accepted. Cash, card, or check payable to FlatCan accepted for payment.

Danielle Hardesty named chief deputy for sheriff’s dept.

Lt. Danielle Hardesty has been promoted to the position of Chief Deputy for the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle announced the appointment. “Chief Deputy Hardesty began her career with the sheriff’s office in 2001 serving in many capacities including

corrections deputy, patrol deputy, investigations, patrol sergeant, and most recently as lieutenant,” he said in a Facebook post.

Hardesty has resided in the area her entire life graduating from Ashton High School and attending Illinois State University earning a bachelor’s degree

in Criminal Justice. She is also a graduate of the Northwestern University’s Staff and Command program.

“Danielle’s extensive knowledge and passion to serve the citizens of this county make her a great selection to lead this agency well into the future” VanVickle said.

OBITUARY CHARLES ‘CHUCK’ R. BAAL MT. MORRIS - Charles “Chuck” R. Baal, 63, passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 4, 2021, with his family by his side.

He was born June 5, 1958 in Rockford, the son of Donald and Velda (Klenz) Baal.

He graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1976. He served his country as a missile maintenance specialist in the U.S. Air Force from 1977 to 1981.

Chuck married Brenda Kalnins on Sept. 27, 1985 at the Disciples United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris; they were married for almost 36 years.

He worked as a machine operator for Quebecor Printing in Mt. Morris from 1985

until its closure in 2011. He worked for Rayovac for a few years, and then was hired

by Donaldson Company in Dixon, for the past 7 years.

He loved to travel, and was always happy to try a new restaurant or brewery, and being outside grilling out or having a beer with family or friends.

He really loved his sweet treats. He was looking forward to retiring in 2 years and having more time to do the things he loved.

Chuck was an avid Chicago fan, rooting for the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls.

He loved going to professional and minor league baseball games in the summers.

He was active in the Mt. Morris community by volunteering and helping run the Youth Sports League for several years.

Chuck was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was very active in his children’s lives, always willing

to help them practice and helped coach almost all their sports teams.

Chuck was an avid bowler and participated in several leagues throughout his life, He could even throw the ball between his legs and strike.

He was part of the group to get the Oregon Bowling Team formed and was the assistant coach for many seasons. He was always proud to tell people that both of his kids had 300 games.

He was always there to support all his family no matter what the occasion was and help his parents and in-laws with different projects around their houses.

“Chucky” loved watching and playing his grandchildren’s activities, whether it was hockey, dance, baseball and football.

He was predeceased by his father Donald Baal, and father-in-law Elmars Kalnins.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda of Mt.

Morris; son, Justin (Cassie) Baal of Normal; daughter, Emily Baal of Mt. Morris; mother, Velda Baal of Pecatonica; brother, Steve (Bonnie) Baal of Freeport; mother-in-law, Marion Kalnins of Mt. Morris; grandchildren, Kolbe, Maddison, and Mayson Baal; sisters-in-law, Sandy (Al) Nordman of Oregon, Lisa (Michael) Janes of Dixon, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, July 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Town and Country Lanes in Mt. Morris.

Military honors will take place at 2 p.m. by the Oregon VFW Post 8739.

Memorials may be directed to the family or the charity of the donor’s choice.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF July 6 Marshall Heide, 29, of Ottawa, was arrested at 6:50 p.m. for driving while license suspended and unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container following a call to Illinois 64 and White Rock Road for a motorist assist. Heide also received citations for expired registration and no insurance. Heide was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 7 At approximately 4:12 p.m., the sheriff deputies along with personnel from the Stillman Valley Fire Department and Linscott Rock Fire Department, responded to the 7400 Block of N. Junction Road, Davis Junction, for the report of a one-vehicle crash with injuries.

It was later determined a pickup truck driven by Tobias Inman, 38, of Davis Junction, was northbound when it left the roadway and overturned several times coming to a rest in a

corn field.

Inman fled the scene into a cornfield to which additional personnel was dispatched to the area to assist in locating Inman. Also responding to the scene was Ogle County K9 and drone personnel and the Flagg Center Fire Department and Byron Fire Department.

At 7:14 p.m., Inman was located in the cor field just west of the crash scene and taken into custody.

He was transported to OSF Hospital in Rockford by Stillman Valley Fire for injuries related to the crash. He was arrested and released at OSF for the following charges: driving while under the influence, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, failure to wear seatbelt, and expired registration.

The vehicle was towed from the scene by Maggio’s.

July 8 Brianna Ogden, 18, of Rockford, was arrested at 3;35 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop near Illinois 2 and Townhall Road.

Ogden was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond. Ogden was also cited for a registration violation and no insurance.

July 10 At approximately 3:51 p.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop on Kennedy Hill Road, just into Winnebago County.

After an investigation, Jamar Baker, 32, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked. He was also cited for obstructed view. Baker was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 11 At 12:38 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on W. Blackhawk Drive at N. Colfax Street in Byron for an equipment violation. After an investigation, Ray Smith, 54, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was transported to the Ogle County Jl and held in lieu of bond. Smith was also cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, and driving with no lights when required.

Illinois State Police activity for May

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 528 citations, 563 written warnings, and made 13 criminal arrests during the month of May. Speeding accounted for 276 citations, 49 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, 10 citations were issued for move over violations, and 56 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 21 traffic crashes, assisted 106 motorists, and conducted 224 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 27 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were 6 arrests for driving while under the influence. District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in May.

July 8 Angela Mae Ludens, 42, Dixon, was issued a citation at 9:08 p.m. for unlawful use of an electronic communication device. She was released on an I-Bond.

July 10 Robert W. Bergman, 42, Lisle, was issued a citation at 3:48 p.m. for speeding, 41 mph in a 30 mph speed zone.

Bergman was released on an I-Bond.
