As in past years, the Town and Country Days Festival seems to have encouraged the rain to come to our area.

The afternoon showers were a welcome event. We are in God’s care and for this, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Judy Riffle. We have changed to our new schedule, starting our worship service at 10:00 on Sunday mornings. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe continues her series Summer of Grace, in person and online.

I would like to wish the fathers a very Happy Father’s Day. Many of our dads and grandpas spent the day with families. We are grateful for our fathers and the father figures in our lives.

This afternoon, Charlotte and I traveled to Timberlake Playhouse for the performance of “Pippin.” We had a nice visit and enjoyed the performance. We had our Polo neighbors, Ed and Karen Olsen sitting right behind us.

When I arrived home, I was able to have some time to talk with Matt. He had a bit of

an accident recently but is recovering quickly. I always enjoy visiting with my children and being a part of their lives, even with all of the distance.

In the evening, I went to visit my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their son, Garrett. Hayden was at work, but returned as I was leaving for home.

The Bittingers have much to celebrate in June, Ben’s birthday, their wedding anniversary, and Father’s Day. On Saturday afternoon, I visited my aunt’s home in Franklin Grove. Linda and Paul Erisman were hosting a get-together for her son, Mike Sheely and his wife, Debra, as they were home visiting from Colorado. It was great to see so many extended family members.

In the evening, my coworker met me at the Polo Library for the performance of Burn ‘n’ Bush. After the music, we went to Dixon for dinner. Over the years, I have made many treasured friendships with my coworkers.

As coworkers, we have shared experiences. We spend our entire workday next to each other, discussing issues for work

and chatting for fun. Over the past year, our shared experience of living through a pandemic has opened many conversations wherever we go.

These happenings bring us closer together as friends and as a family.

We come together with different backgrounds and differences. We spend time together in prayer, asking for help for each other. People enter as strangers and soon receive all of the love and concern of a family.

I believe God did not intend for us to be alone. He is with us when we are alone and He is with us when we gather together. You can share the experience with those around you and be a part of a family.

Advisory Board asked for 90-day delay, but school board opts for 60 days

ehinton@oglecountynews.com The Oregon School Board agreed Monday night to delay a decision on a proposal to close the David L. Rahn Junior High for 60 days.

The 5-2 decision followed passionate requests by nine Mt. Morris residents and one high school student who all asked the 7-member board to delay the decision for 90 days and, in some cases, as long as 9 months, until more research could be done on closing the last remaining school in the village of 3,000.

“What we respectfully request is a 90 day delay – say until your September school board meeting – in making a decision about the life of DLR,” said Rob Urish, longtime resident of Mt. Morris, former school board member, and chairman of the Mt. Morris Eco-

Urish is leading a recently-formed “Advisory Group” that was formed after Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney announced last month that he was proposing closing the school due to decreasing enrollments and increasing maintenance costs.

On May 17, he presented the pro-

posal to the Oregon School Board and on May 26 he addressed the Mt. Morris Village Board, followed by a May 27 “Town Hall Meeting” at the school at which nearly 80 people attended.

At the May meetings, Mahoney said it took him 3 years to come to the conclusion to recommend closing the 66-year-old school, which houses 7th and 8th grade students. He said the

building needs $6 million in repairs and is costing the district’s budget about $400,000 a year.

He is proposing closing the school at the end of the 2021-22 school year and moving students to Oregon High School, located 5 miles to the east.

On Monday, Urish said the Advisory Group was made up of “concerned citizens and taxpayers” and includes former school board members, former and current school administrators, former and current chief financial officers, an attorney, a school auditor, and other community leaders.

“Our intent is not to usurp or hijack your authority or responsibility, but merely to study the many circumstances, potential repercussions and possible unintended consequences, implicit in Superintendent Mahoney’s recommendation, and offer sensible, practical, action-able solutions, alternatives, if you will, that preclude the closing of DLR, and what is more, alternative solutions for stabilizing the long-term financial circumstances of OCUSD,” Urish said.

Several told the board that closing the school would be “devastating” to Mt. Morris, hindering economic development, damaging home values, and dividing a “wedge” between the two communities.

“If you take the last school away from Mt. Morris you will destroy this school district, you will never get another referendum passed,” said Rick Ryland, an Oregon resident and former school board member who worked on the district’s 2001 referendum initiative.

Ryland said that referendum barely passed (1,644 to 1,600) with voters in Mt. Morris approving it in each Mt. Morris precinct and Oregon voters rejecting it in every Oregon. “So Mt. Morris saved the day,” Ryland said to applause.

Mt. Morris Village President Phil Labash said the board’s decision would be “monumental, b not only for Mt. Morris, but the entire Oregon School District”.

Village Trustee Melissa Nicholson present the board with a petition with 416 signatures from both Oregon and Mt. Morris residents asking that the school stay open. She said 39 current high school district students had also

Bruce Obendorf, a Mt. Morris resident and former school board member, said the district’s finances did not warrant closure of the school. “Why now?

At some point it may be necessary, but from my viewpoint it’s not now,” he said.

Board member Molly Baker made a motion to delay the decision for 90 days and Mindy Nesemeier seconded it, but that motion was defeated 2-5 with Baker and Nesemeier voting yes.

“I would be in support of more time,

but prior to the start of the school year,” said board member Mike Guzman.

Board President Bryan Wills said he did not think a delay was necessary. “I think we have all the information we need,” he said.

Baker then made a second motion to delay the decision for 60 days and that motion was approved 5-2 with Wills and Mary Jo Griffin voting no.

After the meeting, Baker said she was hopeful that the Advisory Board would offer alternatives to closing the

school.

“I’m hoping they will come up with other solutions that will solve our financial situation,” she said.

In his presentation to the board, Urish proposed a special school board meeting, shortly prior to the deadline, during which “we will make a presentation including a report with recommendations for you.”

Mahoney said he has asked Urish to share “any solutions ahead of time” to give the board time to process the information.

Mt. Morris Jamboree returns with nine concerts for 2021

After a year of pandemic-induced silence, organizers of the Mt. Morris Jamboree is looking forward to a music-filled summer.

The popular live-music series is scheduled to begin in downtown Mt. Morris in July.

“Summer’s here and the time is right to celebrate hopefully getting beyond this nasty pandemic by throwing a party on our beautiful, historic campus every Friday night,” said organizer Larry Ubben. “After taking last year off and starting a bit later this year in the interest of public safety, the

Mt. Morris Jamboree is once again ready to rock!”

Ubben said this year’s schedule will include 9 concerts featuring bands that play a variety of musical styles.

“We’re pleased to announce that Aireloom Music Studios will again be helping provide sound for a couple of acts this year,” Ubben said.

All shows are free to the public with the festivities commencing at 6 p.m.

Food and drink concessions will be offered by different groups each Friday, with most of them being run by local charitable organizations.

“Several local small businesses will often be on hand to sell their wares, too. All performances start at 7 p.m. and run until at least 9 p.m.,” Ubben said.

The series begins on July 2 and kicks off the Annual Let Freedom Ring Festival and Jonas Fultz Memorial Car Show.

The Ogle County Pork Producers will be providing concessions.

Dirt didn’t deter mood at the RRRMC hill climb

ehinton@shawmedia.com Eighty-some riders didn’t mind the dust one bit at the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club’s Father’s Day Hill Climb.

Gene Topliff of Murray, Nebraska climbed onto his 1970 Triumph motorcycle and promptly rode the 750 to the top of the hill, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake - all to the delight of the large crowd who watched from below.

Topliff was one of around 80 riders from several states who tried to conquer the hill, located across from White Pines State Park.

“We have riders here today from Nebraska, Indiana, Iowa…all over,” said one club official midway through the event.

Cullen Vice, 13, of Georgetown, near Danville, was one of the teenage riders who made it to the top of the hill on a KTM 125.

“He’s one of our riders,” said Clint Gouty of Danville who was busy giving high-fives after Cullen made it to the top. “We have other riders here today

The Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club was founded in 1935 and was known for its hill climb event, held just southwest of what once was the Pines Drive-In Theater.

When the theater closed, the club purchased the land it was on, and eventually added other events. The club grounds are located east of Polo on Pines Road, across from the entrance to White Pines State Park.

“Larger, handsome” school replaces blue limestone

I

t did not take long for the community to realize that the blue limestone building built in 1867 for around $20,000 was not adequate’ The Tri-County article of Dec. 24, 1887 suggested they buy up all the lots on the block with the Presbyterian Church on one corner and the Lutheran Church on the other corner, and then place the new school squarely in the middle of both of them. That is exactly what they did.

A history of the schools described the new school as a “larger, handsome, cream colored brick with straight lines and colonnades at both north and south entrances.” This school cost around $60,000.

When the cost to build the school went over the amount they had figured, it was Bryant Barber who used his own money to make up the difference according to an article in the newspaper.

Barber also put in the trees and shrubbery to landscape it. I always loved the sidewalks as a child and we would roller skate up and down them. Bryant Barber was secretary of the board at the time of the building of the school.

At the open house Mrs. J. B. Moore, age 90, climbed the stairs all the way to the top where the high school students had their classes. That would have been a pretty good trek since I remember all the steps.

Once the older people got to the top, they reflected back on their own school days and discussed the differences. They had over 2,000 visitors at the open house.

Polo Historical Society Another article, dated Nov. 11, 1899 of the TriCounty Press, listed all the pictures that had been donated by different families. Betty Swanson donated, to the Polo Historical Society, the picture her family had given to the new school in 1899. We have placed that at Aplington House in the downstairs hallway. I wish I could remember some of the pictures in the school but I do not.

One gentleman, who had been opposed to building the new school, commented while looking over the finished building, “Well this is a fine building and the only fault I have to find with it is that I have no one to send to school and be benefited by it.”

On the first day of the new school opening, the students that paid tuition doubled from the previous year. It was also noted in the Nov. 25, 1899 Tri-County Press that there were students from Haldane that came by train on the Illinois Central Railroad.

Mrs. R. G. Shumway on opening day gave all the teachers a bouquet of carnations to welcome them into the new building. It was not just one carnation

By 1907 the high school had 135 students with $1,200 in tuition being paid for by out of town students. By 1921 the school was crowed and they started to think of building a high school somewhere else in the community.

In 1927 the high school students moved out and it was then Polo Grade School for all eight grades. The kindergarten was added in 1927.

After last year’s festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Polo residents were ready for their usual parade with fire trucks, floats, and, of course, candy.

And this year’s parade entries did not disappoint. First State Bank of Shannon-Polo-Lake Carroll had employees giving candy to youngsters and small American flags to adults while Polo Softball and baseball team members rode on hayracks or in the back of pickup trucks and threw candy to the crowd. Tebala Shriners rode their “Tebala Birds” little white jets while other Shriners drove their miniature cars.

Students and families associated with Jordan Creek Farms rode decorated horses and ponies with one dressed as a fire truck and fireman and another as a medical provider with the horse donning a nurse’s hat.

“These are our riding students and families taking part today,” said Victoria Hughes, owner of the horse camp and riding facility located west of Polo on Freeport Road.

Thunderstorms that were forecast for around the start of the parade at 12:30 p.m. did not materialize until the evening.

eingles@shawmedia.com The Forreston-Polo boys track & field team collected quite the medal haul at the Class 1A state track meet on June 17 in Charleston.

A lot of that came from the feet of Bennett Soltow, who claimed a second and third place in his two individual events, then was part of a third-place relay.

In the 300 hurdles, that second place was very nearly a first. His 39.37-second run was just 0.26 seconds behind winner Isaiah Chatman of Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.

“That was great competition. I loved every second of it,” Soltow said. “My legs were dead. I kicked a hurdle and that set me back, but I have to give it to him, he’s fast. It was great to run against him.”

In the 110 hurdles, he got off to a great start but ended up third with a time of 14.95. Cowden-Herrick’s Jadon Robertson won in 14.68. Matthew Beltran added an eighth-place finish for the Cardinals in 15.74.

The Cardinals 4x100 relay of Bennett Soltow, Brock Soltow, Avery Grenoble and Jordan Neuschwander took third place with a time of 43.77.

Neuschwander was nearly able to catch Chicago Hope Academy on the anchor leg, but came up just short.

Catlin Salt Fork, running in the other heat, took second.

“It felt pretty good to us,” Brock Soltow said. “I thought Jordan was going to get him there. I didn’t think we were going to get second [in the heat], but we did. We pulled it off.”

The 25 points scored on the day put the Cardinals eighth in the final team standings. Harvest Christian Academy scored 51 points to win the state championship.

“Our relay really put it out there, and Neuschwander put it all out there too. It was good,” Bennett Soltow said.

In the 100, Neuschwander was ninth in 11.20 second and Morrison’s Alex Anderson was 19th in 11.39.

Bishop McNamara’s Tony Phillips won in 10.87.

Forreston-Polo’s Brock Soltow was 26th in 54.79.

Forreston-Polo high jumper Matt Beltran cleared 1.85 meters in the high jump to take 17th.

Jadon Robertson of Cowden-Herrick cleared 1.99 meters to win.

Oregon’s Daniel Dominguez is coming home with a discus medal after his 43.62-meter toss on his final attempt earned him seventh place.

Dominguez also took 18th in the shot put with a throw of 13.75 meters.

Cowden-Herrick’s Daniel Lucas had the winning throw of 16.76 meters.

“Today I just wanted to enjoy the day, to soak up everything, the atmosphere,” Dominguez said. “I’ve never had this much crowd around me, so I was kind of nervous, but most of all excited to go against all these great throwers. I thought it was amazing.”

In the 800, Forreston-Polo’s Ethan Cain took 24th in 2:04.27 and Oregon’s Ryan Hussung was 31st in 2:08.37. Eli Mojonnier of Bismark-Henning-Rossville won in a time of 1:57.33 In the 1,600, Forreston-Polo’s Carson Jones was 30th with a time of 4:57.77.

Oregon’s Riley Benton came in at 3.50 meters and did not clear that height.

Cornerstone Christian’s Ridge Willard cleared 4.60 meters to win.

Sam Roszak of North Shore Country Day won the long jump, leaping 6.74 meters.

Neuschwander faulted on his first and third attempt and went 5.19 meters with his second and 5.70 with his fourth, placing 25th.

Old, unique all part of Lions’ Father’s Day Car Show

ehinton@shawmedia.com Barry Jacobs and Gary Black have more in common than just living in Oregon.

They both love their Mercury Comets.

Jacobs and Black were two of the nearly 90 car enthusiasts who brought their cars to the Oregon Lions Club’s Annual Father’s Day Car Show on Sunday.

Jacobs has a deep-red 1964 Caliente and Black has a hot-red 1965 Cyclone.

“I’ve had it about 7 years. I just really liked the model,” said Jacobs. “I even have records of when Bemis Motors worked on it.”

Bemis was the longtime Ford dealer in Oregon prior to closing several years ago.

Black has owned his Cyclone for 20 years. “I like the body style,” he said.

His first car was a 1964 Caliente and when he returned home from serving in Vietnam in 1968 he bought a 1965 Mercury.

“I served in 1967-68 and I bought one when I got back,” he said, noting that he sold the car when he married and had children.

Twenty years ago, he decided to buy the Cyclone. “I bought it as a gift for myself for surviving the kids and the war,” he said smiling.

Two rows over, a much different kind of vehicle was a very different kind of ride—Nick Hensley’s 1973 Cadillac Super Duty Hearse.

The Compton resident created the trumped up hearse by putting it on top of a 1994 F150 1-ton Ford truck, powered by a 73 IDI, 4-stroke diesel engine.

“It was a frame-on-frame body swap,” said Hensley, who is a diesel mechanic. “I worked on it for about 3 months on weekends and nights.”

“It’s different and it definitely stands out,” said Hensley laughing. “It weighs just under 9,000 pounds. I took went over a truck scale to find out.

That’s how petty I am.”

Herbst leads Hawk wrestlers at Sandwich sectional

It was another steamy day in Sandwich for the IWCOA 1A sectional on Saturday and three of the six Hawk wrestlers entered into the tournament placed in the top four and will advance to the State Finals in Springfield on June 24.

With one graduated senior and five promoted sophomores, Oregon came to compete.

Senior Andrew Herbst, had a bye, and led 14-1 when he ran a wing at 2:53 in the quarterfinal. An escape, a penalty point, and late takedown, all in the third period gave him a 6-0 win to reach the 145 pound championship match.

In a rematch of the regional final with Simon Rille of Lena-WinslowStockton, Herbst scored a takedown with 20 seconds left to take the title 4-3.

Down 3-2 late in the championship bout, Herbst scored a takedown with three seconds to go to pull out the win.

“I just needed to stay calm and do what I knew I needed to do,” Herbst said. “His defense was greatly improved from last time. He was stopping most of my shots.

“Just going out controlling the match the way I wanted it controlled and staying on my offense,” Herbst said.

All five of the sophomores stayed alive to the consolation semifinals.

At 113 pounds, Edwin Estrada advanced to the championship semifinals with a bye and a 6-2 decision, lost a 1-0 heartbreaker, and came back with chicken wing at 2:43 to qualify for

After losing a last second escape that tied the match, he took third place when he stepped over for a reverse in the third overtime to win 6-5 over Chris Sitter of Dixon.

“It was all mental I think,” Estrada said. “My body wanted to stop but my mind wouldn’t let me. “Honestly my mind was just blank [late in the third period]. All I could think about were those two points.”

All four Oregon wrestlers in the first round pinned. At 138 pounds, Seth Stevens had a fall at 3:11 before he lost 4-2 to Ivan Rosas of Harvard in the quarterfinal and pinned twice in the wrestlebacks to qualify and reach the third place match.

The semifinal pin was over Kadin Rednour of Kewanee who had defeated him twice in the regional. He met Rosas again in the third place match and came up short 9-8 when Rosas scored a takedown with five seconds left in the match.

At 120 pounds, Grant Stender hooked up a half nelson at 1:23 in his opener and lost 9-2 in the quarterfinal.

He pinned twice more to reach the con-

solation semifinal where he never got rolling, dropping a 6-1 decision to fourth place finisher Wyatt Doty of West Carroll.

At 126 pounds, Lane Halvorson took a wing over the front at 2:58 in the first round and lost a 15-6 major decision to eventual champion Evan Reilly of Sandwich in the second round. He ran a wing in 54 seconds in consolation and won 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

With the state berth on the line, he tied the score with an escape with 15 seconds left but lost a takedown as time expired to go down 8-6 to Owen Feiner of Seneca.

Feiner finished third and Halvorson will be an alternate in Springfield.

At 160, Gabe Eckerd used a headlock at 0:42 to advance, but was reversed to his back at 4:31 in the quarterfinal. In the lower bracket, he got byes to the quarterfinal where he scored a takedown to the back at 4:05.

In the semifinal, he missed on a try for a throw in the third period and was taken down and knocked out with a 5-2 loss.

IHSA’s sports season have finally come to an end COMMENTARY F

inally, it’s a wrap for the 2020-21 Illinois High School Association’s sports seasons.

Throughout the year, this column made mention of strange and unusual happenings.

In a fitting culmination, it was a baseball team winning the 4A state title after entering the post season with a losing record and No. 13 sectional seed.

That would be Plainfield East, who were 12-15 when the regional began and then reeled off seven straight wins to claim the championship. Each of their games in the playoffs was against teams with a higher seed, creating what had to be astronomical odds to pull that off.

But, in the year of Covid, anything is possible.

I spent the weekend at Charleston for the IHSA boys track & field meet, which has been contested since 1893. Called the Spring Spectacular, it truly is with all corners of the state represented.

The major difference this year was splitting 1A, 2A and 3A into separate meets each day per class.

That takes away from the championship feel on Saturday, but the rationale was the least athletes congregating, the better.

With Covid restrictions being relaxed, 2022 should resort back to all 3 classes sharing the facility on the final day.

None-the-less, great performances across the board. The Forreston-Polo team did exceeding well, taking eighth place with 25 points.

They were seventh in both 2019 and 2018 and third in 2017. With its fourth straight top 10 finishes, F-P

can lay claim to having the best program over that time period, as no other school has been in the top 10 each year.

In another impressive stat, Bennett Soltow would have placed in both the 110 and 300 hurdles in the 3A meet.

The northern Illinois small-school program with the greatest tradition remains Oregon and the Hawks kept alive its 20-year streak of at least one state-placer, as Daniel Dominguez brought back a discus medal.

On Friday for 2A, the IHSA postponed the running events from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. because of the heat.

They did not make this decision until late morning, causing major hassles for athletes, parents, fans and coaches either at the meet already or on the way their.

I don’t want to belabor the point further, but I continue to disagree with changing athletic events because it is hot.

How are athletes ever going to condition them-

selves for harsh conditions if they are not exposed to them? The field events took place at noon and continued until finished. There was an epic pole vault competition between Colton Naffziger of Normal and Malakai Shaad of Geneseo that lasted over three hours, with both clearing 16 feet.

After it was over, I asked runner-up Shaad what affect the heat had on him. Bear in mind, he also been in it another hour before the competition during warm-ups.

He said it really didn’t bother him at all. In fact, he got better the longer the competition waged on.

Stop babying these kids and convincing them they can’t do things because of inclement conditions.

When I bring this argument up, I am always shot down by someone who tells me it has become a liability issue. At that point, all I can do is throw my curmudgeon-like hands up and mutter to myself about being thankful for growing up in a generation that didn’t have lawyers dictating everything.

At the IHSA Board of Directors meeting this month, a state wrestling tournament for girls was approved. Nearly 1,000 girls in Illinois are competing in the sport.

The Board also is looking into implementing a shot clock for basketball, with a target date of 2022/23.

Hopefully, this column will return for another year of sports when August rolls around. Until then, have an adventure-filled summer.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF June 8 At 10:44 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on Illinois Rt. 38 at Lincoln Highway in Rochelle for an equipment violation. After an investigation, Jacob Simpkins, 31 of McEwen, Tennessee, was arrested for possession of cannabis 100-500 grams, and improper container of cannabis as a driver.

Simpkins was also cited for no rear registration light and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

Rita M. Walsh, 24, of Rochelle, was arrested at 9:31 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Tilton Park Drive in Rochelle for an equipment violation.

Walsh was released on a notice to appear with a court date of July 16.

Carlos De Los Reyes, 22, of Rochelle. was arrested at 12:15 a.m. for not having a valid driver’s license and improper cannabis container as a driver, after a traffic stop on Illinois 251 and 72 in Davis Junction for an equipment violation. He was also issued citations for no registration light, and operating uninsured motor vehicle. De Los Reyes was released on a signature I-bond with a return court date.

June 18 Izias Jose Chaidez, 19, of Sterling, was cited at 12 a.m. for no valid driver’s license.

Chaidez was released on an I-Bond.

Noah Joseph Anderson, 17, of Rock Falls, was cited at 6:58 p.m. for disobeying a stop sign. Anderson was released on an I-Bond.

OBITUARIES FORRESTON – Donna Frances (Heer) Cornelius, 84, of Forreston, passed away June 20, 2021.

She was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Derinda, to John and Mae Heer. After graduating from Elizabeth High School she attended Northern Illinois University. She married Elgin Dale Cornelius on Oct. 11, 1959.

Donna worked as an administrative secretary at Western States in Freeport and Forreston High School. She was a CNA at Pinecrest Manor for over 30 years, retiring at the age of 80.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Faithful Hands Quilting. She was a talented organist, painter, quilter, seamstress, and gardener. She loved plants, music, crossword puzzles, baking, and the Massbach Hills.

She adored animals and traveling, most recently she traveled to Spain and Morocco.

Donna is survived by daughters, Sue Cornelius Johnson (Todd), Holly Funk (Jerry), Heather Cornelius (Jim Norton), and Maria Dierking (Kurt); grandchildren, Haley Bruner (Michael), Taylor Funk, Lucas Dierking, Gabbi Dierking, Cameron Dierking; great granddaughter, Emerson Bruner; sister, Ruth Lyons; brother and sister-in-law Donald and Darlene Cornelius; two god-daughters, Barbra Lyons and Donna Rae Crossno; many nieces and nephews; and two very spoiled felines, Josephine and Katsu.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Rion Dierking; nephew, Doug Cornelius; and a multitude of four legged friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m.

Thursday, June 24, at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston, with Pastor Scott Ralston officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church. A private interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.

CAROL (HEYWOOD) TUTTLE

MT. MORRIS – Carol (Heywood) Tuttle, 92, of Mt. Morris, passed away peacefully and in the presence of family on Monday, June 21, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon.

Carol was born on Oct. 10, 1928, in Chicago, to Oliver Charles Heywood and Dorothy May (Smith) Heywood. Carol grew up in Hinsdale, with her parents and older brother, George.

She was an active girl with a love of the outdoors, camping, swimming, and tennis.

Following her graduation from Hinsdale High School in 1945, Carol proceeded to Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

Also attending Carleton College at that time on the GI Bill, was a young man named Don Tuttle from Medford, Minnesota.

Following their graduations from Carlton College in 1949, Don and Carol married. They lived in Tucson, Arizona, for a number of years as Don continued his education.

They returned to Illinois in 1951 to start their family, living in Hinsdale, Lombard, and then Elgin. In Elgin she worked as a teacher in the Elgin Public Schools and Elgin Community College and then for a number of years for Ackemann’s Department Store in the Merchandising Department.

Carol was most recently a resident of Pinecrest Village in Mt. Morris. She was an active and devoted member of Faith United Church in Elgin, and most recently at Disciples United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris.

She was an avid Cubs Fan and Bulls Fan. She loved the outdoors, traveling, music, movies, reading, knitting, and spending time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her three children, Susan (Jan Paul) Koeller of Flanagan, Rich (Patti) Tuttle of Naperville, and Donna (Dale) Hoppe of Mt. Morris; and her six grandchildren, Christopher (Marissa) Koeller, Jennifer (Dusty) Gibson, Scott (Stephanie) Tuttle, Chelsea Tuttle, Ross Tuttle, and Kyle Tuttle.

She is survived also by five great-grand-

children, Henry and Matthew Koeller, Grace and Amelia Gibson, and Elliott Tuttle.

Carol was proceeded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother.

The lifelong friendships she created and nurtured through her faith and membership in the church, were among the most important and cherished in her life. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

She will be truly missed by so many.

A memorial service for Carol will be held at Disciples United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris, on Tuesday, June 29. The service will be held at 11 a.m. and will be followed by lunch at the church.

Arrangements were completed by Finch Funeral Home in Mt. Morris.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made in Carol’s name to Disciples United Methodist Church or to Pinecrest Village in Mt. Morris. Any proceeds to Pinecrest Village will go toward improvements to the outdoor patio and garden area where Carol enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

LORENE M. STAMM

FREEPORT – Lorene M. Stamm of Freeport (formerly of Forreston) passed away at Serenity House and Hospice Oregon, on June 18, 2021.

Lorene was a special Christmas gift to Walter and Leatha Wilkens, born on Dec. 25, 1938, in Brookville.

Lorene graduated from Forreston HS and later attended Highland Community College to complete course work in Principles of Bank Management.

Her professional career included 31 years at Forreston State Bank, and she eventually retired from German American State Bank.

Her second career was launched in 1972, when she and Gary purchased acreage to raise and show registered Black Angus cattle. Lorene has many trophies to show for these efforts.

Lorene loved country living and there was not any chore she would not do. The locals

often teased Gary about how many steers Lorene owned and cared for; she loved working “the farm” with Gary.

Lorene’s spiritual home was at Faith Lutheran Church, Forreston where she had served on the Church Council and also as a Junior Leader. Her winter church was Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Crosby, Tennessee.

Her free time was spent with oil and ceramic painting. She did not have a family member or friend who had not been blessed with her beautiful and fun ceramic wares.

She also has an amazing collection of chicken salt and pepper shakers from across the US and around the world. Lorene always said she loved her chickens and her cows.

She was a loyal Green Bay Packer fan and danced to country music. She was an active woman; you could find her playing cards and 42, gardening, fishing, and traveling in their camper.

Lorene and Gary wintered at their cabin up on a mountain in the Smokies. She cherished being close to nature with its wildflowers and wildlife; being in the hills close to Heaven.

Lorene is survived by her loving husband, Gary and many heartfelt and caring nephews and nieces, her extended family and wide circle of friends.

She is predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Loren, and Lavern; and her first husband, Kendall Coon.

Visitation will be held on June 28 at Burke & Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston from 4-7 p.m.. Funeral services will be at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston on June 29 at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the local Cancer Society or to the Ogle County Fair.
