POLO – A Dixon police sergeant soon will take over as Polo’s police chief.

On Dec. 18, Polo City Council members voted 4-0 to hire Matt Coppotelli of Dixon as the city’s chief of police starting Jan. 2, 2024. Coppotelli’s salary was set at $92,000 a year.

“I think I bring a lot of experience to the table and have a lot of ideas,” Coppotelli told council members after the vote.

“Obviously policy to make sure everything’s up to date. Community programs, especially in the schools at a young age. I just think I bring a lot to the table to improve the police department as it stands now.”

Coppotelli will succeed former Chief Troy Randall, whose final day was Oct. 21. Randall resigned to take a position as Lanark’s police chief.

Coppotelli has spent all 27 of his years as a police officer with the Dixon Police Department. He was promoted to sergeant in 2003.

He and his wife, Judy, both were born and raised in Dixon, Coppotelli said.

They have two sons, ages 21 and 18.

“I felt with my experience at my time in Dixon that I have a lot to offer Polo,” Coppotelli told Shaw Media. “A lot of my background, I think, can really benefit the city of Polo and police department.

I’m hoping to get the chance to do that moving forward.”

Mayor Doug Knapp and Aldermen Jim Busser and Tommy Bardell were absent from Monday’s meeting.

By KAREN MERLAK The season of anticipation moves gently by while we wait patiently for the hope of the world to be celebrated once again. Today we celebrate the joy we feel during this season of Advent. For the many ways we are blessed, we give God our thanks.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Deb Ohlwine. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her thoughts on joy for the third Sunday in Advent. Don and Vicki Hay lit the next candle in our Advent wreath. Brian Toms shared Scripture throughout the service.

Our women’s ensemble, consisting of Vicki Hay, Elizabeth Elliott, Nancy Hopkins and yours truly, sang “The Coventry Carol” for special music. Mary MeadCantrell played piano while the congregation joined in many hymns.

Elizabeth Elliott also sang a beautiful solo for special music.

In the afternoon, our church held its annual caroling event. The crowd was small but was filled with enthusiastic singers. We sang traditional hymns and popular tunes. Our women’s ensemble sang again in the afternoon.

After singing, we shared a time of fellowship complete with Christmas cookies and punch. It was a wonderful afternoon spent with dear friends and neighbors.

This Sunday, in addition to our regular morning worship, we will host a Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. at our church just off Lowell Park Road. Bring

your family and friends to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We will have refreshments and fellowship after the service.

On Saturday, we had two teams of workers from Pine Creek Christian Church helping distribute food and gifts to members of the Polo community.

Many hands gathered together to make light work of helping others.

This past Thursday evening, I stayed in Forreston for our elementary school concert. My class of third graders, along with the other classes, delivered a wonderful program. We have just one more week of school before our holiday break.

Later in the week, I caught up with Matt to find out about his new job. It makes me so happy to hear that he really likes his work. Clint has been working steadily at his job and continues to go to school.

Stephanie and João will be moving in a few weeks back to Minneapolis. I am glad that they will be much closer to home.

For now, they will be celebrating their last Christmas in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Knowing they are all doing so well makes it easier to have them so far away.

On Friday afternoon, one of my students lost her new ring as it fell into one of the garbage cans. Since she had to catch a bus home, I offered to look for it, knowing how special it was to her. She had been so excited to show me the ring as it was a gift from her sister.

As I dug through the garbage can filled with used paper towels, I was reminded of the children’s message given by Jane Hamilton several years

ago. Clint was a participant in the message, and at age 4, gladly rolled up his sleeve to dig through some garbage to help Jane.

She compared it to the grace God gives each of us. He reaches down through the garbage all around us to lift us up and brings us close to Him. He rescues us when everything seems hopeless.

That grace is a gift for each of us. He loves us that much. Today is a great time to get to know this God that created you, the One who loves you and the Father who sent Jesus to live with us.

A fellow teacher joined me in the quest and she found the ring resting on the folded edge of the garbage bag. I was so glad to return it to its owner. We are never truly lost in the light of God’s grace.

After more than 14 years of writing the Pine Creek News, I have decided to step away. Thank you to the many, many readers who have shared their gratitude and compliments for my words. I appreciate all of you. Next week will be my last installment.

I hope to see you next Sunday morning in our little church in the country.

We will celebrate the fourth Sunday in Advent in the morning and a Christmas Eve service in the evening. Come and join us in celebrating the birth of our Savior.

Community rallies to help 69-year-old woman 3 living in tent at Lowden State Park campsite

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – Sarah Wright smiled broadly as she greeted Barb Davis at the tent she now calls home at Lowden State Park on Dec. 14.

“I brought you toilet paper and paper towels because that’s what you said you needed,” said Davis, a Mount Morris resident. “Now I have to say hi to Luna.”

Luna, Wright’s 6-year-old dog, happily greeted Davis with lots of tail wags and excited barks. The big white pup is one of the main reasons Wright, 69, is now living in a tent at a campsite at Lowden in the middle of December.

“I have gone through a series of slum lords,” said Wright, who previously lived in Polo before the apartment building she was living in was cited by the city as unfit for human occupancy.

“I’ve applied for housing, but all I can take is one service dog, which Luna is, and one cat. And I have three cats. All I have are my animals and I am not going to give them up. Stuff [doesn’t] matter to me.”

Wright, a native of Virginia, moved to Illinois in 2011 to be near her father.

In 1998, she visited the Polo area and White Pines State Park with her dad.

“I fell in love with Polo,” she said.

“My dad took me to White Pines State Park and it immediately reminded me of where I grew up.”

Her path to living in a tent at Lowden included being flooded from her rental home near Fulton, living out of a storage unit, staying in an unheated garage loft in the Rock Falls/Sterling area (offered by a friend at no charge) and a homeless shelter.

“In Polo, the landlord allowed me to have my dog and cats and I thought he was a good guy, but then the home was condemned and I had to move,” she said.

During those months, she continued to seek a place for herself and her pets and she has applied for housing through the Ogle County Housing Authority.

“This is better than the shelter,” she said, pointing to her three-season tent.

“There was too much drama there and someone stole my stuff.”

During her days at the shelter, the Whiteside County Animal Control took care of her pets.

“They were wonderful. They took care of my cats and dog. I can’t give them enough praise,” Wright said.

She started camping at White Pines State Park and Lowden in April, alternating between the two, adhering to the parks’ 14-night consecutive stay limit.

“I’ve been at this site since the middle of October,” she said.

Without a vehicle, Wright has relied on the kindness of others and one Polo man in particular, Mark McGinnis, who moved her and her belongings to and from each park every two weeks during the summer.

“Mark has been taking me to all the housing meetings and he knows all about the drama with the landlord,” Wright said. “He deserves a big hallelujah because I know he’s missed family events to help me. He’s taken me to doctor appointments. He’s a real hero of this story.”

McGinnis, a bus driver for the Polo school district, said he has known Wright for about two years.

“She is a wonderful lady and she has done a lot of things. She has all kinds of stories,” McGinnis said.

McGinnis has a handicapped-accessible van and has transported other Polo residents to and from doctor appointments and to grocery stores at no charge.

“They pay for the gas. I volunteer my time,” McGinnis said, noting the Faith United Methodist Church in Polo also has reimbursed him for gas for trips.

“When her apartment building was condemned, I moved her belongings to several storage units that she had

rented. And then, every 14 days, we loaded up my trailer and we moved her from one campground to another,” McGinnis said. “Sarah has kept me quite busy. It’s just something I saw the need to do.”

Wright’s cats are staying with Kathy Wragg of Polo while Wright and Luna stay at Lowden.

Inside her dome tent, Wright has cots, a heater and a small cooking area.

The tent is covered in blue tarps to help keep it warm and dry. She keeps water in jugs, collected from one of the park’s public drinking faucets, and has access to electricity at the campsite. She said she has plenty of camping experience.

“I’ve got my snowshoes ready for when it snows,” she said, smiling.

Wright said she worked in law enforcement while in Virginia and spent a few years in security for a retail store in Virginia Beach in addition to other jobs.

She said she was on disability after a back injury but now has Social Security as her sole source of income.

Last Thursday afternoon, her mom, Anne Goney, 87, of Abingdon, Virginia, called.

“I hate to see you living like this at your age,” she told her daughter.

Goney said she was thankful for

everyone helping her daughter.

“I have been so upset with her and I just want to thank everyone so much for helping her,” Goney said during the call. “I don’t have money to bring her home.”

A lot of help has come after a post on social media about Wright’s plight.

Since that post, many people have stopped by Wright’s campsite with supplies to help her during her stay.

Mike James of Dixon brought Wright a tote full of supplies, including a heater, flashlights, electrical cords and small propane tanks.

“I had the heater, but the rest of the items I bought,” James said as he dropped off the tote Thursday afternoon.

A group of Oregon residents are working on fixing a donated camper and van for Wright to use.

Brad Parkinson of Oregon first saw Wright while he was walking his dogs at Lowden. He stopped and talked with Wright and knew immediately that he needed to help her.

“She is a lovely woman,” Parkinson said Friday. “I thought, ‘No, we are not going to let this happen. We are going to fix this. We are going to help her.’ ”

Esther Howland part of Polo’s connection to the Mayflower

During our Polo Christmas celebration, we had people from out of town waiting in our museum for the trolley. They were looking at displays and, as usual, were amazed at what we have. Later, as they were mulling what they had seen, they wondered how we were connected to some of our displays.

One of those displays was a greeting card display and the heading on the top shelf said, “Mother of the American Valentine. Esther Howland.” Now if they had read all of the information, they would have known how Esther was connected to us.

I learned very early that people do not take time to do a lot of reading in a museum. Early in my life at the museum, when we just had Aplington House, I had one person from Dixon who would spend an hour or two just reading all the displays – and those

That was rare.

Evidently when I did the greeting card display in the new museum I was a bit wordy when it came to Esther Howland and all someone saw was the heading at the top. So the question came to our library as to how we were connected to the person who started valentines in America.

Esther Howland was connected to the sailing of the Mayflower and Polo’s first teacher also is a descendant of those early people. I found the story to be remarkable many years

ago and it is time to tell it again.

Thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Tilley was on the Mayflower with her parents and an aunt and uncle. Her family did not survive after they arrived but Elizabeth did. In 1623, she married John Howland who also came on the Mayflower.

Esther Howland was the greatgreat-great granddaughter of Elizabeth Tilley Howland and John Howland.

Lucy Bassett was Polo’s first teacher and Mary Huckins, the great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Tilley and John Howland, was married to Nathan Bassett.

The Bassett family arrived on the second ship, “The Fortune.” A number of the Bassett family came to this area. Polly Basset, I think, might have married a Wamsley and much of the Bassett family history is in the Wamsley file. When Christmas is over, I will

get back into the old files and look them over again. We also have several files on Bassett history.

Several of the Bassett men fought in the Civil War with the 15th Regiment and they were in Company H from Polo. Richard Bassett was a signer of the Constitution and that is in our file in the Bassett history. I had gone through those files many years ago and now it has surfaced again. I need to pull the Wamsley file again to get all the history straight.

I will get back to Esther Howland and her valentines nearer to Valentine’s Day. Right now we are busy with Christmas and we need to get this holiday over with before we head into another.

The first round silos were constructed of wood

By OTTO DICK While driving around Ogle County, Marilyn and I drive by many silos. We have observed there are several types of silos. However, we don’t know their history and what they contain.

I searched the internet and located an article titled the legacy of the disappearing silo.

The earliest silos date almost 150 years ago. They were built of stone, brick or wood and often were below ground.

The first silo, a wooden and upright one filled with grain, was invented and built in 1873 in Spring Grove, Illinois, by Fred Hatch of McHenry County, Illinois.

In 1882, there were only 91 silos in the U.S. By 1895, there were more than 50,000. By the early 1900s, there were more than 500,000 across the country.

Today, we see fewer and fewer silos across the country. Farmers today are improving the method of storing feed.

In the 1870s, silos were horizontal and called pit silos. They were partially or completely located underground. The first tower type silo was in the early 1800s. The term “silo” comes from the Latin word that means cellar.

The first round silos were constructed of wood. They were available in kits, however, they had a number of problems. They were notorious for

leaks and were not airtight.

Around the turn of the century, farmers began to experiment with various types of masonry to build silos. The masonry silos were stronger, more durable, more airtight and could be built higher.

Around 1910, silos were constructed of masonry units that hooked together with mortar applied to the joints. Later, silos were constructed of poured concrete.

The bright blue silos you might see are known by the brand name “Haverstore.” The design was introduced in the 1940s. Haverstore silos are made from fiberglass bonded to curved sheets of steel and then formed into an airtight structure. The fiber-

glass lining of the Haverstore successfully resists silage acids.

Silos were used to store silage, grain and hay. When William DeLhorbe moved to Oregon in 1914, he established a business by the river at First Street and Jefferson.

Here he constructed burial vaults and septic tanks. He also constructed concrete silos.

You still can see remains of the silo foundation. So at one time we had a silo in the city limits of Oregon. At this time, many properties in Oregon had a small shed and a milk cow.

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – Defense attorneys for an Oregon woman accused of killing her 7-year-old son in 2021 have subpoenaed the boy’s father seeking any items he may have in connection with the case.

Sarah Safranek, 36, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery in the February 2021 suffocation death of her 7-yearold son, Nathaniel Burton. An autopsy Nathaniel Burton showed the boy also had a ruptured liver.

Safranek has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

On Dec. 13, Bryan Burton, 37, Nathaniel’s father, appeared in court for Safranek’s status hearing, saying it was unclear as to why he was ordered to appear in court.

Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien told Judge John Red-

ington that Burton had been subpoenaed to ask for any items he may have in connection with the case.

“You received a subpoena but you don’t understand it?” Redington said. “It is asking you to provide certain records if you have them.”

Burton said he had been too busy with work to read through the entire subpoena.

“I only skimmed the first page before I came here,” Burton said.

A copy of the subpoena was not included in court documents available to the public.

Redington told Burton that he had 30 days to comply with the subpoena.

“If you are in possession of items, present them to the defense either electronically or physically,” Redington said. “If you are not in possession of anything, tell them that.”

Burton told Redington that his phone was seized during the investigation.

“You still have to respond,” Redington said.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said Burton is a witness for the state, but he offered to help Burton understand and comply with

the subpoena.

“He is our witness. We can’t represent him, but we will sit down with him,” Rock said.

Redington ordered Burton to respond to each of the items in the subpoena to the Ogle County Public Defender’s office

by Jan. 13. The next hearing in the case was set for 1 p.m. Jan. 24.

Rock and his assistant Matthew Leisten did not object to the continuance.

“Respondent Burton is not required to appear if he has provided the above responses,” Redington wrote in his order.

The Dec. 13 hearing was scheduled during a Nov. 22 hearing in which O’Brien told the court he had received a written report reviewing Safranek’s mental fitness but needed time to review it.

“We reviewed it, but now we have a secondary issue,” he said Dec. 13, referring to the subpoena.

Jayne Braden, a forensic and clinical psychologist in Sycamore, was the court-appointed expert who conducted Safranek’s first evaluation when she was charged. On Nov. 3, 2022, Redington ruled that Safranek was fit to stand trial

after reviewing the mental health evaluation requested by the defense.

Earlier this year, Redington denied O’Brien’s request to hire additional medical experts for Safranek despite O’Brien’s argument that Safranek has “a long history as to past mental health care” and that those health issues are “directly connected to her defense.”

Defense attorneys asked Redington to approve an additional expert to “review and evaluate mental health records” of Safranek, including her condition at the time of the alleged crime.

They argued that extensive mental health records were provided by the state and revealed a “substantial history of mental health issues, mental illness and related services.”

Redington only agreed to have Braden review Safranek’s history of “mental health issues.”

Safranek has been held in the Ogle County Correctional Center on $2 million bond since her arrest in April 2021.

She appeared remotely via video from the Ogle County Correctional Center for the Dec. 13 hearing.

Continued from page 3 Parkinson has jump-started that effort by donating his old camper and van to Wright. He and other volunteers will be helping get the camper ready at Parkinson’s home. The van has been made road ready for Wright by Buttita Brothers in Oregon and was delivered to her this week.

Parkinson is transferring ownership of the van and camper to Wright and plans on helping her update her driver’s license, insure the vehicles and get a new cellphone.

He also has spearheaded a fundraising effort for Wright at the Oregon

Continued from page 5 In October, O’Brien filed a motion seeking Safranek’s release from jail under the SAFE-T Act because of her “inability” to post the required 10%, or $200,000, of the $2 million bond.

The court found Safranek to be indigent in 2021 after she filed affidavits regarding her finances.

The motion follows passage of the state’s SAFE-T Act, which was upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court and took effect Sept. 18. The law eliminates cash

Cash donations can be made at NAPA. Wright does not keep cash at her campsite.

A motorcycle rally called “Men With Motorcycles” is being planned from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Ogle County Brewery, an Oregon business. The event is open to motorcyclists, as well as the public, and will include a motorcycle run to Lowden State Park to visit Wright after the

fundraiser.

McGinnis said he has been monitoring the recent outpouring of help for Wright.

“I would love to see her get an apartment,” McGinnis said.

Last Friday morning, Charlie Kitzmiller and Sherry Crumbaker of Oregon stopped by with a load of fresh clothes for Wright.

“They did my laundry for me,” said Wright, carrying the bag of clean clothes to the tent. “And a mobile groomer stopped by and Luna had a bath and nail trim.”

Kitzmiller and Crumbaker learned of Wright when they saw her tent at the campground.

“We drove through the park, but she

wasn’t here when we stopped,” Charlie said. “We came back the next day and we stopped and talked with her. After we talked to her, we knew we were going to help her.

“The snowball was small when it started rolling, but now it is the size of a barrel. People are asking, ‘How can I help?’”

“She’s very sincere,” Crumbaker said. “And we believe in her.”

Wright said she is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and donations.

“This is life-changing,” she said.

“When I get the camper and van, I am going to get a job. I haven’t asked for all of this. The heroes are all the ones helping me.”

bail and requires that a defendant be released unless a judge rules that the defendant is a highly likely flight risk or poses too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

Safranek has claimed that she has mental and physical issues that are not being treated properly at the jail, including daily headaches and frequent facial numbness; frequent muscle spasms in her arms and legs; excessive fatigue and weakness; frequent chest pains; frequent pain between her shoulder blades; worsening vision problems, including worsening blurred vision and floaters; worsening balance issues; and worsen-

ing numbness in one or more fingers.

In the motion asking for her pretrial release, the defense argued she is not getting sufficient medical attention while in custody.

Prosecutors argued against Safranek’s release, saying among other things that she is a danger to the Ogle County community and has “a history of substance abuse and psychiatric issues.”

Redington denied the defense’s pretrial release motion in November and again Dec. 13, noting he had considered all factors in the first-degree murder case and that her pretrial release would

be a “real and present threat to the community.”

Redington again told Safranek that she could appeal his decision within 14 days of the Dec. 13 hearing.

Nathaniel, a first grade student at Oregon Elementary School, was found unresponsive and not breathing about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 17, 2021, in his bed at his home in the 400 block of South 10th Street.

He was pronounced dead later that day at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

Safranek was arrested April 21, 2021, and indicted May 4, 2021. She pleaded not guilty May 6, 2021.

Proposed neighborhood would ‘flip the script’ on disability services MOUNT MORRIS – A new neighborhood meant to cater to residents with disabilities in a way that breaks the “one size fits all” method could be coming to Mount Morris sometime in the next few years.

The Mount Morris Village Board on Dec. 12 unanimously voted to provide an official letter of support for the proposed Hill Street Neighborhood. The almost $10 million, multi- Brion Brooks phase project is the work of the Village of Progress and Kreider Services and would be built in the northeast corner of Mount Morris.

The two organizations, based in Oregon and Dixon, respectively, both serve people with developmental disabilities.

Phase 1 of the project involves building a community center and 24 units, half of which would be for individuals with developmental disabilities, said Brion Brooks, Village of Progress executive director. The other 12 units would be low-income housing.

“The idea is to make an integrated community,” Brooks said. “We don’t want some area that’s segregated off for people with disabilities.”

Disabled residents would get to choose their own service provider and, with the help of a coordinator, decide for themselves what services they need, when they need them and how they’re delivered, he said.

“It flips the script on how Illinois is providing services to people with disabilities,” Brooks said.

Currently, the most common service model is group homes, which house six to 12 people, Brooks said.

The services in group homes are “one size fits all” with residents receiving the same services regardless of their actual individual needs, Brooks said. Not everyone in a group home needs 24/7 care, but their only other option tends to be to live with relatives, he said.

The Hill Street Neighborhood would have an on-site manger and a “concierge,” Brooks said. The concierge would be there during the hours most people likely are to be home, but wouldn’t be a 24/7 service, he said.

It’s a service that would “take little things and keep them little,” Brooks said.

“When you or I have something that upsets our day, it’s a speed bump,” he told Village Board members. “But when someone with a disability has something that upsets their day, it can lead them to have a very upsetting day.”

Someone with disabilities might use the concierge if a bus that’s supposed to pick them up at 8 a.m. every day doesn’t show up, Brooks said. Instead of panicking or being distressed, the person could go to the concierge, who

could make calls and figure out what’s going on and how to fix it, he said.

The service wouldn’t be only for disabled people in the Hill Street Neighborhood. All residents could call on the concierge.

“Let’s say there’s a single mom. She wakes up and there’s a flat tire and she has to get to work, get her kids to school,” Brooks said. “The concierge can call the auto shop to get the tire fixed and call her employer to tell them she has a flat tire so she doesn’t lose her job.”

Nondisabled residents would have to go through a “pretty diligent” screening process, including criminal background checks, he said. That would be, in part, because the state wants to ensure people with developmental disabilities that the state is providing safe areas for them to live in, Brooks said.

The community center building, which would serve the whole neighborhood, would have space for service providers and clients to meet, as well as one or two rooms for telehealth appointments, he said.

Additionally, four acres on the east side of the lot would be dedicated to the village of Mount Morris to turn into a park, developed as the village sees fit, Brooks said.

Phase 2 of the Hill Street Neighborhood would be constructing additional supportive housing and market-based housing. Phase 3 and, if there’s enough space, Phase 4, would be to build on the 5.86-acre lot directly west of the main land parcel.

“We’re starting out small because, A, the village of Mount Morris is small and, B, it’s just frightening to start off with 60 units,” Brooks said. “Twenty-four units is much more manageable. It gives us a chance to see how our project develops and then to scale it up with subsequent phases after that.”

Judge denies Oregon man’s argument that he should be released from jail Stubblefield requests release to help ailing grandfather

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – An Ogle County judge rejected an Oregon’s man request Monday that he be released from jail in order to serve as a caregiver for his ailing grandfather while his case for possessing images of child sexual abuse proceeds through the court system.

Kris D. Stubblefield, 32, who has pleaded not guilty to the eight charges, appeared before Judge John “Ben” Roe with his attorney, public defender Michael O’Brien, Kris D. Stubblefield and assistant state’s attorney Heather Kruse.

“Mr. Stubblefield wishes me to continue to address his detention,” O’Brien told Roe, adding Stubblefield wishes to live with his grandfather if he were released. “His grandfather has Parkinson’s and cancer. He would be providing caregiving ser-

vices to his grandfather. There is a hardship on his family due to his incarceration.”

Stubblefield was arrested Oct. 21

by Ogle County sheriff’s deputies after a monthslong investigation and search of his home, both prompted from a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Stubblefield is charged with possessing videos of children engaged in sex acts. Charging documents say all of the children were younger than 13 and some were as young as 3. He has been held in the Ogle County Correctional Center since his arrest.

On Monday, Kruse argued to keep Stubblefield in custody, citing reports from the Illinois attorney general and the sheriff’s office that he is a registered juvenile sex offender and was in possession of more than 1,500 images of children engaged in sex acts with adults and some with other children.

The photos and videos were found on Stubblefield’s phone, Kruse said.

When police searched his home, he agreed to speak to law enforcement and told an Ogle County sheriff’s detective that he was a “purveyor of taboo material,” Kruse told the court.

“There is a huge public concern

with child pornography and human trafficking,” Kruse said. “His behavior is why this exists.”

Kruse said Stubblefield’s conviction as a juvenile was for aggravated criminal sexual assault of a child under 9 years of age.

“He has an interest in younger children. He told a deputy that he knew it was wrong, but he still did it,” she said, referring to the images found on his phone. “He continues to download images. The community is at risk here.”

Roe agreed.

“This involves very young, prepubescent children,” he said. “These types of images can be tied to human trafficking of children.”

Roe said Stubblefield is charged with “criminal acts involving the internet,” which is difficult to restrict or monitor if he were to be released.

“By his own admission, he has a compulsion,” Roe said. “As I sit here today, I don’t believe there is condition that could restrict the defendant. I know there will be an evaluation taking place, which the court will consider. The grandfather is outweighed by the other factors.”

Roe ordered an evaluation of Stubblefield on Dec. 7.

Monday was the fourth time a judge has denied Stubblefield’s request to be released. On Dec. 6, Roe denied the motion after a 402 conference with Roe, Kruse and O’Brien.

A 402 conference is intended to be an open process where attorneys and a judge discuss relevant information regarding the defendant. Stubblefield agreed not to be present for the 402 conference when he appeared in court Dec. 5.

In November, Judge John Redington denied a defense motion asking for Stubblefield’s release.

Stubblefield also filed an appeal of an Oct. 24 decision by Judge Clayton Lindsey after one of his first court appearances on the charges. That appeal was denied Dec. 15 by the Appellate Court of the Fourth District.

Stubblefield’s attorneys have argued for his release, citing his cooperation with law enforcement, adding that he had not tried to elude law enforcement in any way and has no history of violence.

Stubblefield’s appeal was filed under the Pretrial Fairness Act. It argued he should be released because the state did not meet its burden of

The Mount Morris Planning Commission is considering recommending to the Village Board that the land, which is zoned for farming, be rezoned to multifamily residential with a variance allowing for the community center, said Jeff Bold, Planning Commission chairman.

Village trustees will have to vote on whether to approve any zoning changes.

Rosie graduated from High School from Mt Morris HS Class of 1945. She worked at Del Monte Corporation in Rochelle as the switchboard operator for 25 years. She enjoyed this job and you could hear the smile in her voice as she answered those call. She also spent many years waitressing at the Rochelle Country Club where she created many friendships in the community. Rosie was an absolute hard worker; many times carrying multiple jobs at the same time. When Gary opened his own bar “The Garage” in Rochelle you can bet she was right there cooking away and handling the catering side of the business.

She was a phenomenal cook!

She was a leader and inspiration to many including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a tremendous appreciation for traveling the world, which began in her 40s, traveling with her friend and companion May Hill. They took trips around the world including Norway, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Hawaii, Thailand, Alaska and much more. She was proud to share the cultures she experi-

enced abroad and found great joy and pride in returning to the United States. She went on to travel around the US twice. You couldn’t hold Rosie back from new adventures. At the ripe age of 87 she wanted to try zip lining! Which she did of course. Some of her adventures in addition to traveling were sky diving, skiing, bungee jumping and elephants walking over her.

Rosie had a passion for genealogy also. She spent endless hours researching our history and outlining it for the younger generation.

While traveling she was strategic visiting areas where she could connect to family and gain more knowledge of the family history.

When she moved to Idaho to join family in (2012) she brought along her photos and books to work on more history. Unfortunately, her memory started declining and we are all grateful for what she did document in her earlier years.

After retirement Rose moved out West to California to join Terry and Barb and their girls Aimee and Emily. She enjoyed a care free life, living simply at membership campgrounds, soaking up the sun at the pool and volunteering. She taught her grandchildren many life lessons those years. She would teach them swimming, miniature golfing, bingo, fishing,

card games, dancing and of course crafts.

She loved Halloween and dressing up. She was so proud to win multiple contests for her exceptional costumes, shocking most with her sly sense of humor. Happy hour was her favorite; Sweet Red Wine with a few ice cubes and anything sweet to eat, some good country music and dancing. She was one Classy lady and will be terribly missed. She made a lasting impression with many; we are better people for knowing and loving her. She was proud of taking Latin in High School and her favorite take away was “Amo Te” (I Love You). She was a Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Caretaker and Leader.

What more can anyone ask for?

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department once again is partnering with units of local government and some high school FFA chapters to conduct the annual Christmas tree collection and recycling program.

Since the program began in 1999, there have been more than 16,550 trees collected with trees averaging about 50 pounds each. That equates to about

414 tons of trees, which all were turned into usable mulch.

Starting Dec. 26, cities and villages with drop-off points will include: Oregon: Park District Maintenance Department, 507 Hill St. Byron: Byron boat launch lot, East Blackhawk Drive (Route 2) Forreston: 407 N. Locust St. Leaf River: 208 Railroad St. Rochelle: Atwood Park, 10th Avenue and 20th Street Monroe Center: Lichty’s Landscaping, 309 Pacific St.

Polo: Southwest corner of East Colden Street and South Green Avenue On Saturday, Jan. 13, local FFA chapters will provide curbside pickup for trees. Remove all decorations, lights and plastic bags and place your tree at the curb by 8 a.m. The pickup service will be offered in Byron, Forreston, Leaf River, Mount Morris, Oregon and Polo.

For Rochelle residents, the Rochelle Street Department will mulch trees at the curb during the

The holiday season has arrived and the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department has tips and suggestions for waste reduction and recycling during the holiday season and beyond.

Typical holiday seasons see a dramatic increase in residential waste generation and 2023 is shaping up to be very similar. With additional purchases, food preparation, entertaining, gift wraps and packaging, it is no wonder that residents produce more waste this time of year.

While planning meals this season, plan portions accordingly by checking what you already have at home and buying only what is required for your needs. Use reusable shopping bags if possible when shopping and have a plan to use leftovers in a timely fashion. If you have a backyard compost pile, use it for fruit and vegetable trimmings, egg shells, coffee grounds and other plant-based waste from your kitchen.

Use reusable plates, silverware,

cups, napkins and tablecloths. Avoid disposable options when setting the table this holiday season.

For gift giving, consider gift cards or gift certificates, especially from local restaurants and shops, or consider the gift of an experience such as a day at the spa or a weekend experience or trip of some kind. These gifts will eliminate packaging that will need to be disposed of later and can create special memories for those on the receiving end. Also consider sending an electronic greeting card or something through social media to family and friends to avoid paper use and the waste of a greeting card. Avoid wrapping paper if possible by using reusable gift bags.

With more and more shopping being done online, try to have your items shipped together if possible to avoid excess packaging. Flatten cardboard boxes for pickup if you have recycling service. Plastic bags and wrap generally are not recyclable, but can be dropped off at the OCSWMD at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. Some local retailers also will accept them for recycling.

If you have curbside pickup of recyclables, remember to recycle right by placing only what is accepted into your bins. Items such as newspapers, magazines, junk mail, flattened cardboard and paperboard boxes, beverage cartons, greeting cards, non-foil gift wrap, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars and plastic containers Nos. 1-5 and No. 7 are all accepted in your curbside recycling service. Items such as Styrofoam, plastic bags and bubble packaging, pizza boxes, plastic utensils and straws and other trash are not recyclable and diminish overall recycling efforts when mixed in with recyclables.

There are two county drop-off recycling stations. One is in Oregon on Pines Road at the Farm Bureau lot. The other is in Byron at the Forest Preserve maintenance lot. The above guidelines also apply for these drop-off locations for your recyclables. Please do not leave items on the deck or parking lots as these hosts have been gracious enough to allow the use of their property for community recycling.

electronics recycling drop-off event will be Jan. 26, by permit only, at the County Annex building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. Register for this event by calling at 815-732-4020 or email the OCSWMD at solidwaste@oglecountyil. gov.

If you have strings of old holiday lights that need to be recycled, there are drop-off bins at the Ogle County Court House, the County Annex building, fire stations in Rochelle, Byron, Stillman Valley and Mount Morris and village halls in Davis Junction, Polo, Creston and Forreston.

Only holiday light strings and extension cords will be accepted. No decorations, garland, metal stands or other electronics. Remove light strings from packaging. No plastic bags will be accepted.

Firearms instructor accused of forgery in Ogle County

OREGON – The Illinois attorney general is prosecuting the owner of a Rockford firearms training company and a GOP candidate for state Senate who the AG said falsified information in Ogle County for clients who were applying for concealed-carry permits.

Juan J. Reyes, 52, of Rockford also was indicted Dec. 1 on gun charges in Winnebago County.

In Ogle County, Reyes is accused of

filing paperwork in 2022 that says clients completed the required 16 hours of training when they did not, Attorney General Kwame Raoul said in a news release.

Reyes faces two Juan J. Reyes to five years in prison, or probation, and a year of mandatory supervised release if convicted of forgery.

Reyes, owner of JCC Firearms Training, also is charged with violating the Concealed Carry Act, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 364 days in jail, two years’ probation and a fine of up to $2,500.

According to the charging document, which was filed May 18, 2023, on May 14, 2022, Reyes, a certified firearms instructor, knowingly provided Illinois State Police Special Agent Scott Wernet a signed, false concealed-carry certificate that said Wernet and another applicant had com-

pleted firearms training.

Reyes was arrested Nov. 7 in Winnebago County and pleaded not guilty Dec. 1. His preliminary hearing is Jan. 31. He is free after posting $1,500 of his $15,000 bond, which was imposed before the Pretrial Fairness Act eliminating cash bail took effect Sept. 18.

He and his attorney, Christopher Taylor of DeKalb, declined to comment.

Continuance granted in Rockford man’s 17-count case

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – The defense attorney for a Rockford man charged with 17 offenses – including narcotics racketeering, delivery of methamphetamine, methamphetamine conspiracy, armed violence and possessing a firearm as a felon – asked for and received a continuance for his client Dec. 14.

Delano Albert, 34, appeared before Judge John Redington with his attorney, Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien, after being brought to the Ogle County Correctional Center in a wheelchair and handcuffs.

“We are still working some things out with discovery,” O’Brien told Redington.

Albert has been held in the Ogle County Correctional Center since his arrest Oct. 1. On Nov. 30, Redington denied Albert’s request to be released on bond. At that hearing, Gansmann

said Albert should not be released because he is a “real and present danger” to others and the community. He also argued that Albert would be a flight risk if released.

Gansmann told Redington that Albert made “numerous” deliveries of methamphetamine and cocaine to undercover officers or police informants. He said one of the deliveries was in Ogle County.

According to some of the indictments, Albert possessed between 100 and 400 grams of methamphetamine and between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine.

One of the indictments accuses Albert of being an armed habitual criminal, noting he possessed a handgun after being convicted of possessing more than 1 but less than 15 grams of cocaine in 2008 in Winnebago County.

Gansmann said when police

searched Albert’s residence in Rockford on May 16, they found three loaded handguns. He said Albert was a convicted felon, has two previous convictions for armed violence and had a loaded weapon in his bed while police were searching his residence.

He said Albert left the Rockford area after the search was conducted and was found in Minnesota.

O’Brien argued that Albert should be released because of his “ongoing health issues that affect his overall mood.”

He said Albert was in Minnesota visiting family and had not tried to “flee” any potential charges, adding there was not an outstanding warrant issued.

Redington denied the motion for pretrial release, ruling that prosecutors had met the criteria for holding Albert.

On Thursday, Redington again denied Albert’s request to be released.

County Court, where he is indicted on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a nonprobational offense punishable by one to three years in prison and a year of mandatory supervised release, and with misdemeanor possession of a firearm without a FOID card, which carries up to 364 days in jail, up to two years’ probation and a

fine of up to $2,500.

According to the indictment, on Nov. 7, when he was arrested, Reyes had in his possession an uncased, loaded and immediately accessible Glock 43 handgun without a valid license under the Concealed Carry Act and without a valid FOID card.

He has a status hearing Feb. 21.

Incumbent Democrat Steve Stadelman defeated Reyes in the general election for the 34th District on Nov. 8, 2022. Stadelman is seeking reelection.

Reyes also filed to run again. He faces Belvidere’s Crystal Villarreal Soltow in the March 19 primary. The 34th District is in Winnebago County and includes most of the Rockford area.

Dedicated volunteers honor veterans in the rain during Wreaths Across America 13 OREGON – A cold steady rain didn’t stop volunteers from placing wreaths on the graves of veterans at Daysville Cemetery southeast of Oregon as part of the nationwide Wreaths Across America on Dec. 16.

Debbie Oracki of Forreston helped at the event because she has two children with military experience – one retired and one in active duty with the U.S. Navy.

“There is a certain pride you feel today by doing this,” she said as she placed a wreath at a veteran’s grave on the dark, rainy day.

The Saturday afternoon event was coordinated by the Rochelle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution with help from Oregon VFW Post 8739. The wreaths were provided through donations.

Laurie Perry, regent of the Rochelle Chapter of the DAR, spoke briefly about the Wreaths Across America program, noting that Saturday’s event was part of a national effort to honor local veterans by placing wreaths at their graves.

“The United States of America was founded on the ideals of freedom and justice. We stand as a beacon of liberty and freedom to the world,” Perry said.

“We thank those who gave their lives to keep us free and we shall never forget. Today, more than ever, we reflect on our nation’s veterans and active duty service members who stand to protect the innocent and the oppressed.

“Today we show a united front of gratitude and respect across the United States of America as we remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families and teach the next generation the value of freedom.”

Ceremonial wreaths were first placed in honor of all of the military services, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POW/ MIAs. About 25 volunteers then spread out across the cemetery to place

Wreaths Across America Day, held annually in December, also includes a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, in addition to other locations in all 50 states. All

According to the Wreaths Across America website: “In 2022, Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers placed more than 2.7 million sponsored veterans’ wreaths on headstones of our nation’s service members at 3,702 participating locations. This was accomplished with the support of more than 5,000 sponsorship groups, corporation contributions and in-kind donations from the transportation industry across the country.

“The wreath-laying that began more than 30 years ago is still held annually on the second or third Saturday of December. WAA’s annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine, to Arlington National Cemetery has become known as “the world’s largest veterans’ parade.” Every year, the convoy of trucks, local law enforcement, staff and supporters stop at schools, monuments, veterans’ homes and communities along the way to talk about the Wreaths Across America mission and remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach.”

Third-quarter surge powers Newman past Forreston

dwussow@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – For a while, it looked like Saturday’s first-round Forreston Holiday Tournament game between Newman and Forreston would be a close one.

But in the third quarter, the Comets (5-5) erased all doubt.

After outscoring the Cardinals (1-5) by 20 points in the penultimate period, Newman coasted to a 58-38 win.

“We shot the ball a lot better (in the second half),” Newman senior Isaiah Williams said. “We shot 0-for-17 in the first half and then I think on the first five shots of the second half, we were like 4-for-5. I think that was the big difference.”

The first quarter was back and forth.

The Comets started the game on a 9-0 run in the first six minutes, led by a seven-point outburst from senior forward Lucas Simpson, but the Cardinals responded with a 19-2 run through the beginning of the second quarter.

Forreston freshman forward Jonathan Milnes provided the spark, hitting three 3-pointers in the last two minutes to draw the team to within 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The momentum continued into the second quarter with a 10-0 run. Milnes hit another 3 from the top of the key for a 12-11 Forreston lead with 7:16 to play in the half. Sophomore guard Kendall Erdmann followed with a pull-up jumper from mid range and sophomore guard Brady Gill buried a left-wing 3 and Erdmann dropped in a layup for a 19-11 lead for the Cardinals with 4:50 remaining.

“We didn’t have No. 32 (Jonathan Milnes) on our scouting report. We didn’t know if he was a shooter or a driver, so I think he just came out and made some shots and surprised us,” Simpson said. “Once we got him covered, I think we were able to get back in a rhythm.”

That’s precisely what the Comets did. Simpson grabbed an offensive rebound and found a cutting Williams for a layup, then made two layups of his own around a free throw to make it a one-point game.

After a Williams steal and fast-break layup gave Newman the lead, Forreston junior forward Brenden Greenfield took it right back at 21-20 with a pair of free throws as 1:11 remained. That was the score at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Comets outpaced the Cardinals 29-9.

Greenfield pushed the margin to 25-20 with consecutive layups in the first 30 seconds, but the Comets quickly turned the tide.

Williams buried back-to-back 3s from the left corner to put Newman up 26-25 and that was the spark it needed.

Simpson scored 14 points over the last 5:46 as Newman stretched its lead to 49-30 at the end of the third quarter.

The toughest of all will be in Class 1A girls basketball, with five of the top six ranked teams contending for a berth downstate. Here’s the breakdown: No. 1 Galena, which also won the state volleyball crown, should advance out of one sub-sectional. In the other sub-sectional, No. 3 Orangeville and No. 6 Aquin likely will move on, but Pecatonica also is in that group.

Only one of those schools will make it to the Brimfield Supersectional. Awaiting them likely will be either No. 4 Annawan or No. 5 Elmwood.

Finally, whoever emerges from that scrum will be among the Final Four 1A teams headed to CEFCU Arena in Normal, site of the state championship. Last year, Okawville won 1A and is ranked No. 2 this year with a much, much easier road to Normal.

Another tough sub-sectional is in 1A boys, with No. 2 Pecatonica, No. 5 Scales Mound and No. 13 South Beloit in the same sub-sectional. One of those highly touted teams will be the

odd man out at the regional.

Scales Mound and Pec have shown the moxie it takes to win under pressure.

Other than a super talented senior class in 2002-03 and the remarkable Perry Range from the 1970s, the culture at South Beloit hasn’t been conducive for athletics. Can that change come March Madness time?

The other sub-sectional has No. 10 Fulton, certainly a worthy representative that will find its way to the supersectional at NIU. Scales Mound is hoping to make it three straight supersectional wins, an accomplishment that belies its enrollment of 80.

In 2A, Byron is ranked No. 9, but has two buzzsaws in the sub-sectional with Rockford Christian and Lutheran. Like the 1A boys, one of those deserving teams won’t win a regional.

The Byron girls are defending state runner-up, but aren’t ranked in 2A. Stillman Valley and the Tigers appear to be the best in their sub-sectional.

Unlike 1A, it isn’t a particularly daunting postseason gauntlet, though No. 6 Rock Island Alleman is in the other sub-sectional.

With some new personnel, credit to Byron for beating Stillman Valley in a much anticipated matchup last Friday.

In wrestling, it is business as usual with much of the 1A power centered around northwest Illinois. One big change is Polo was bumped up to 2A because it co-ops with other schools and that increases the enrollment.

Oregon lost several key seniors, but proved its mettle with a win at the Stillman Valley Tournament last week. This is a program on the rise with some promising young kids coming up through the ranks.

How about the performance by Gavvin Surmo of Oregon at the LaSalle-Peru bowling invite? Not only did the Hawks junior bowl a 300 game, but he was the individual champ.

Under longtime coach Al Nordman, the Hawks once again are proving to be one of the elite among small schools in Illinois. They are ranked 17th in the state in a one-class system with most of the schools above them much larger.

At L-P, Oregon also claimed the team title with an almost 300-pin advantage over rival Dixon. With 20

Finally, congratulations to friend Brian Reusch of WCCI radio in Savanna for being selected by the IHSA as a Distinguished Media Service Award winner, one of four such recipients for 2023-24.

Reusch summed up the IHSA award saying: “It means the world to me as it indicates that I have made an impact on the lives of others, especially the young people whose events I have covered over the years.”

What Reusch has done for more than 30 years at the mic is a testament to small-town radio and the impact it has on the fiber of the local community. With print coverage of high school sports coverage declining, it is refreshing to see radio still gets out to cover games.

For example, at the 2A state championship football game between Wilmington and Athens, six stations were providing local coverage. Around these parts, it is as strong as ever, too.

The JV team finished fifth out of 17 teams at Freeport. Seven bowlers contributed to the team effort with Aiden Currier leading the pack with an 891 series and the only person to bowl all six games. Zakk West had a 720 series (five games), Caleb Brooks had a 703 series (five games), Ethan Smice a 538 series (four games), Isaac Kramer a 524 series (four games), Immanuel Arellano a 454 series (three games) and Landon Bailey a 431 series (three games).

The JV continued its domination with a 3,128 score over a short-manned Christian Life team. Oregon was led by Currier with a 560 series and had five bowlers with a 500 or higher series. The Hawks are undefeated on the season with 10 straight wins. The JV2 team was led by Landon Bailey with a 508 series.

Refugio Hernandez-Molina, 34, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at Illinois Route 2 and Cultra Road about 9:33 a.m. Hernandez-Molina also was cited for registration violations and no insurance. Hernandez-Molina was released on a notice to appear.

Rafael Mancinas Jr., 24, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop at Powers Road and Illinois Route 251 at 3:57 p.m.

Rueben Burgess, 33, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at Illinois Route 251 and Oak Avenue in Hillcrest about 3:40 a.m. He also was cited for speeding. Burgess was taken to the Ogle County jail and later released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

About 11:17 a.m., deputies responded to the 6300 block of north Illinois Route 251 for a crash with injuries involving a semitruck and a passenger car. An investigation showed a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Sally Knutson, 87, of

Davis Junction, was traveling south on Route 251 and struck an International semitruck. The driver of the semitruck, Angelo J. Mora-Vega, 32, of Belvidere, was trying to reverse into a driveway for a delivery before Knutson struck the passenger side of the semitruck’s cab.

Knutson was taken to SwedishAmerican Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The New Milford and Blackhawk fire protection districts assisted. The crash remains under investigation.

William W. Clark II, 44, of Mount Morris, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting/obstructing a peace officer resulting in injury and no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at Fair Street and Illinois Route 2 in Oregon at 10:05 p.m.

Clark also was cited for expired registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Clark was taken to the Ogle County jail, given a future court date and issued a notice to appear. Clark was detained on an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant.

Charges are accusations and all subjects are presumed innocent unless proved guilty in a court of law.

The appeal followed passage of the controversial SAFE-T Act, which was upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court and allows defendants to be released on no-cash bond.

Under the new law, judges still decide whether a defendant is a flight

risk or pose too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

Stubblefield’s next court date is 1:30 p.m. Jan. 11.

Illinois State Police and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, both

of which work through the Illinois Crimes Against Children task force to target abusive crimes against children, assisted in the investigation.
