I joined in the fun along with Sheryl Hopkins, Judy Riffle, Marge Hammes, Elizabeth Elliott, Martha Johannsen, Sandra Ford, Pastor Suzanne and Vicki Hay. This was a wonderful way to celebrate another year of friendship.

This past Tuesday evening, I attended the regular meeting of our PEO Chapter DW at the home of Paula Faivre. Paula hosted and gave the program, sharing her amazing talents at wreath making.

Paula shared delicious desserts and we enjoyed wonderful conversation in between completing our monthly work.

Joining in the fun from Pine Creek were Lisa Coffman and Maggie Henning.

After a short delay, Matt finally started his new job today. I knew he would be going to bed early but I was glad to get a quick text that he likes the new job.

My hope was that they would be heading home for Christmas since they are out of the military. Now, they have to schedule holidays around their new jobs.

So, they will spend the holiday in North Carolina with their friends.

On Saturday evening, I traveled to Rock Falls to have dinner with a former co-worker and dear friend. We shared many laughs and memories of our time working together.

After dinner, I took a drive to see the Christmas lights in Sterling. It was a peaceful way to enjoy the quiet evening.

In this very busy season, it is easy to be swept up in all the activity. With everything taking up our attention, it can be easy to miss the message of hope.

Each year we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We know the story by heart, however the message touches us in different ways each year. With each passing year, I want to understand more deeply the true love of our Father. His love is our light in the dark.

I hope to see you next Sunday morning for worship and in the afternoon for caroling. We gladly welcome you to come and be a part of our ongoing observance of Advent. Come and join us in our little church in the country.

By KAREN MERLAK As we get closer to the end of the year, time seems to speed up. The Christmas season keeps us busy with activities. As days turn quickly into nights, we need to remember the Creator of it all. He who created all of nature also created love. For each and every gift, we give thanks.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Don and Vicki Hay. Our pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her message of peace for the second Sunday in Advent. Martha Johannsen read the Moments for Missions.

Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins lit the candles for Advent. Pastor Suzanne shared her message for our youngest friends, Claire, Fiona and Amelia.

After church, a small group headed over to Oregon for a lunch out. In this season of joy, we are glad to spend time together in fellowship.

On Saturday morning, our women’s breakfast group gathered at the home of Don and Vicki Hay for a breakfast, fellowship, and gift giving. After our delicious meal, we exchanged gifts and lots of laughter while we passed anonymous gifts back and forth and back again.

Case against Matthew Plote in killing of Mount Morris woman, son continues

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A Malta man accused of killing a Mount Morris woman and her unborn child and then setting her home on fire, will remain in jail as his case proceeds through the Ogle County court system, a judge ruled Dec. 7.

Matthew T. Plote, 36, is charged with killing Melissa Lamesch, 27, and her baby Nov. 25, 2020, then setting fire to her home in Mount Morris to conceal the deaths.

He faces four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child and one count each Ogle County Judge o f r e s i d e n t i a l John “Ben” Roe arson, aggravated domestic battery and concealment of a homicidal death.

“This is a detainable offense and the state has filed a petition to deny the defendant’s release,” Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe said in denying Plote’s release. “I have considered all the evidence regarding the charges.

The presumption is great that he committed these offenses.”

Plote has been held at the Ogle County Correctional Center on $10 million bond since his March 9, 2022, arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has appeared for multiple hearings at the Ogle County Judicial Center as his case proceeds.

Plote’s attorneys, Liam Dixon and John Kopp, had filed a motion asking their client be released under the SAFE-T Act, a new law that allows defendants to be released on a no-cash bond. Under the law, judges still decide whether a defendant is a flight risk or poses too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

In denying the motion for pretrial release, Roe said he examined grand jury transcripts, Illinois State Police reports and autopsy findings before making his decision.

“There are no conditions or combination of conditions can mitigate the real and present threat to persons or the community,” Roe said.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, Roe heard arguments from the defense and prosecutors.

At that hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Kruse said Plote should continue to be detained because of the violent nature of the charges and presented Roe with a transcript of grand jury proceedings that resulted in the indictments filed against Plote.

“This man strangled a woman to death who was pregnant with his son and then he lit the house on fire the day before Thanksgiving,” she said during the hearing.

Kopp argued that Plote is presumed innocent of all charges as he awaits trial and has no other criminal history. He said that during the months between Lamesch’s death and Plote’s arrest he was not charged or accused of any other offenses – including traffic charges – and never tried to leave the area while the investigation con-

tinued.

He said Plote was “keenly aware he was a person of interest” and was interviewed by police on numerous occasions, but remained in the area and cooperated with the investigation.

Kopp also said that Plote was not a flight risk or a threat risk to anyone if he were to be released.

Kopp said evidence provided to a grand jury is not to be considered proof of guilt. Only prosecutors present evidence during grand jury proceedings.

“There hasn’t been a trial in front of a jury. There’s just a group of people that say he’s guilty,” Kopp said at the Wednesday hearing.

Kruse countered that there were not any conditions the court could impose that would ensure Plote would

not flee, arguing Plote now faces natural life in prison. “Before he was arrested, the stakes were not that high,” she said.

“This is a first-degree murder charge,” Roe said Thursday. “There is strangulation and death and the defendant is also accused of setting fire to the home. The court further finds that no one is safe due to these acts.”

Roe told Plote he has 14 days to appeal Thursday’s decision. A tentative jury trial date has been set for March 18. Deadlines for pretrial motions were set for February with the next hearing date scheduled for 9 a.m. Feb.15.

Lamesch was found about 4:30 p.m.

Nov. 25, 2020, after firefighters responded to 206 S. Hannah Ave., Mount Morris, where they encountered heavy smoke and blaring smoke detectors.

She was found on the kitchen floor and pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving measures. She was a 2011 graduate of Oregon High School and an emergency medical technician at Trace Ambulance Service in Tinley Park. Her baby was due Nov. 27, 2020.

Bakers celebrate 60th wedding anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Baker of Chana celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 16 with a family gathering.

“Perpetual cemetery care of mowing, weed control and tree maintenance is constant and costly,” said Marilyn Schwartz, representing the Washington

Grove Cemetery Board. “Even though all board members volunteer, with only approximately three burials a year – the main source of income – it doesn’t keep up with the expenses.

Santa, Little Miss Griffin enjoy new museum home The committee that planned the Polo Christmas celebration did a wonderful job this year and had a funpacked day from 8 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

I have never seen so many people and we were certainly busy at the museum.

The trolley tours were packed and left early each time because they could not get anyone else in the trolley. As a result, they had an extra one at the end .

We are planning another trolley tour for Town and Country Days in June. People would like to see the Polo Lime Kiln, get out at the old cemetery in Buffalo Grove, and perhaps go into the Henry School. We thank Ted Boddiger for taking the place of Mike Faivre. We are very lucky to have people at Polo Historical Society who can fill in anywhere when

We were tired at the museum by the end of the afternoon. Linda Gall was busy greeting people at the door and helping with genealogy. Bob Heath explained things such as Central Stamping, and I just sat and visited with people.

It was a great day for us and we enjoyed having so many stop by.

Thank to Linda for providing the cookies and Ted and Joann for putting together some special gifts on the trolley.

The big question was about the Christmas decorations especially the

ones that we have from Muench’s Shoe Store from years ago. When would little Miss Griffin All-white and the dancing Santa have been in the store? I came home and did some research on the internet.

Griffin Shoe polish started in the 1930s. In 1939 as an advertising promotion they started with paper dolls showing Little Miss Griffin in various outfits. We are fortunate to have those paper dolls along with the doll itself.

So you go back to the 1940s for the actual doll Little Miss Griffin and the paper dolls also.

The dancing Santa was also part of the Muench Shoe Store display. We had a picture of Joey Love as a little boy with his mother, Linda Richards looking at the Santa. Annabelle had taken the picture but no date on the picture. When was Joey a little boy?

When Brad Long purchased the store, house, and all the contents, Polo Historical Society was allowed to go through everything. One day Brad and I went down the basement of the store after it had been closed for many years. The first thing I saw was Little Miss Griffin, the doll, and the dancing Santa sitting on the floor in the dirt. I snatched them up immediately along with another doll. My arms were full.

We brushed and brushed the doll and Santa until they were clean and they have been part of our Christmas decorations at the museum ever since.

Santa still dances and Little Miss Griffin enjoys her new home at the museum near the Muench display cabinet.

NIU first known as Northern Illinos State Normal School

By OTTO DICK DeKalb was chosen as the site for the Northern Illinois State Normal School solely to prepare college-educated teachers. It was chartered in 1895 and opened its doors in 1899 until 1921.

From 1921-1955 it was named Northern Illinois State Teachers College.

From 1955-1957 it was named Northern Illinois State College and since 1957 has been known as Northern Illinois University.

The first campus building was a European-style castle built on the Midwestern plains at a cost of $230,000.

This building was called Altgeld Hall after Gov. John Peter Altgeld. The first class consisted of 146 women and 27 men.

Northern Illinois School became Northern Illinois State College on July 1, 1855, and Northern Illinois University on July 1, 1957. In 1996 NIU regional education centers were established at Hoffman Estates, Naperville

The first Normal School trained teachers in Northern Illinois started teaching 85 years after Illinois became a state in 1818 when there was a need for more and better public schools promoted by Gov. John Altgeld.

Now the main campus sits on 756 acres in DeKalb and includes 64 major buildings. In 1951, Northern Illinois

University acquired a portion of the Heckman estate that included the site of the original art colony, named in honor of Lorado Taft. Today the 141acre campus, located north of Oregon, has become the university’s outdoor education and conference center.

Thousands of participants have come to the Taft Campus to teach and learn in the outdoors.

There are two Lowden Halls: one located on the campus of the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago and one on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

In 1954 as a freshman at Northern Illinois State Teachers College, I waited in a long line to register for courses for classes at Altgeld Hall, which we called the Castle. I also attended Music Appreciation and Art Appreciation classes at the Castle.

At that time the Industrial Arts, Library, Business and Science buildings were nearby. After my Army career I started dating Marilyn. Northern Illinois Teachers College was then Northern Illinois University. We both attended NIU and for some reason I really enjoyed attending NIU. I received my master’s degree from NIU by taking night classes because it was a short drive to DeKalb.

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO – Polo’s participation in an initiative to help local governments prepare to meet a growing demand for electric vehicles and EV charging infrastructure has reached its end, but the work completed remains.

City officials unveiled Polo’s first EV charging station, located at 212 S. Division Ave., on Dec. 1.

“The EV charger is being used, which makes me happy to know,” Polo City Clerk Sydney Bartelt said. “It’s not just sitting there. We’re on the map.”

The charging station was one of the final actions Polo took as part of the EV Readiness Program’s inaugural cohort, which was formed in November 2022 by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and ComEd. On Dec. 7, Polo and 11 other cohort members were recognized by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and ComEd for achieving “EV Ready” status. In addition, the city received special recognition as a “Small But Mighty Community,” for having the largest percent increase in EVs registered in the municipality – 400% – and for installing the city’s first EV charger.

“It was really special to be there and to get that [designation] and to be

City Hall had to be closed for the day, but it was well worth it to be able to accept Polo’s awards, she said.

Polo earned Bronze “EV Ready” designation, along with 10 other communities. The village of Oak Park earned Gold designation, and four other cohort members – the village of Richton Park, Kane County and the

cities of Aurora and Chicago – are continuing their work with the program’s second cohort.

Municipalities in the cohort ranged in population from Polo’s 2,291 to Chicago’s 2,746,388.

According to the 2020 census, Polo, Deer Park, University Park, Hampshire and Glencoe have fewer than 9,000 residents; Richton Park’s population is 12,775. Geneva, Darien, May-

wood, Hanover Park, Carol Stream, Oak Park and Skokie have between 21,000 and 68,000 residents. Aurora’s population is 180,542 and Kane County’s is 516,522.

Man’s request for release in abuse case denied

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A rural Oregon man will remain in jail as he faces charges of possessing images of child sexual abuse.

Kris D. Stubblefield, 32, has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of possessing images after his arrest in October. He was arrested by Ogle County sheriff’s deputies after they received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

On Dec. 6, Judge John “Ben” Roe again denied a defense motion asking that Stubblefield be released from the Ogle County Correctional Center while his case is pending. That decision followed a 402 conference with Roe, Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Kruse and public defender Michael O’Brien.

A 402 conference is intended to be an open process where attorneys and a judge discuss relevant information regarding the defendant.

Stubblefield agreed not be present

for Wednesday’s 402 conference when he appeared in court Tuesday, Nov. 5.

After Wednesday’s 402 conference, which was held in Roe’s chambers, Stubblefield appeared via video conferencing from jail.

“I need to discuss some of items that were discussed with my client,” said O’Brien, asking for a continuance.

Roe set Stubblefield’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 18.

Earlier this month, Stubblefield filed an appeal of an Oct. 24 decision by Judge Clayton Lindsey to keep him in custody that cited the seriousness of the charges.

At that hearing, Kruse argued to keep Stubblefield in custody, citing reports from the Illinois attorney general and the sheriff’s office that he is registered as a juvenile sex offender and was in possession of more than 1,500 images of children engaged in sex acts with adults and some with other children.

The photos and videos were found on Stubblefield’s phone, Kruse said.

When police searched his home, he agreed to speak to law enforcement and told an Ogle County sheriff’s detective that he was a “purveyor of taboo material,” Kruse told Kris D. Stubblefield the court.

Public defenders have argued for Stubblefield’s release, citing his cooperation with law enforcement. They specifically highlighted no indication that Stubblefield had failed to report or to be monitored, adding that he had not tried to elude law enforcement in any way and has no history of violence.

Lindsey said the charges were too serious to allow his release, noting that 1,500 files were found and there was a huge public concern over images of child sexual abuse and human trafficking. Stubblefield’s juvenile convictions also weighed on the decision to

keep him in jail, Lindsey said.

In a pretrial hearing Nov. 9, Redington agreed with Lindsey, denying the defense’s motion for pretrial release, and on Wednesday, Roe again upheld the state’s argument to keep Stubblefield in custody.

“The court will stand on my previous finding,” Roe said in denying the defense’s motion for pretrial release.

Stubblefield’s appeal is filed under the Pretrial Fairness Act. It argues he should be released because the state did not meet its burden of proving any real threat existed to people or the community if Stubblefield were to be released.

Stubblefield’s home, east of Oregon, was searched Oct. 12 after a monthslong investigation. He was arrested Oct. 21 and charged the next day with possession of six videos of children engaged in sex acts and two lewd photos of children.

According to charging documents, all of the children were younger than 13 and some were as young as 3 during August and October.

Alphabet knowledge, sounds important for developing reading skills The last two columns focused on fluency. We looked at the three components of fluency: rate, accuracy and reading with expression. We also considered that fluency plays an important role in understanding what is read or reading comprehension.

Last month’s column was about the importance of phonemic awareness or the ability to hear and change sounds in words. Another closely related skill that also is vital is knowledge of the alphabet.

A child’s phonemic awareness knowledge and their knowledge of the alphabet are strong predictors of learning to read.

English is an alphabetic language, so it stands to reason that anyone who wants to learn to read and write English needs to learn about the 26 letters that make up its alphabet. If we think about it, these ideas are very abstract for young learners.

It takes time and lots of exposure

in many ways for children to understand and learn all about the letters of the alphabet.

Alphabet knowledge includes being able to name all the letters, both upper case and lower case. It also includes being able to tell the most common sound that each letter represents.

In English, many letters represent more than one sound, but for early readers learning the most common sound is the place to start. Finally, children need to learn the correct way to write each letter, again both upper case and lower case.

The way letters and sounds are taught varies greatly from school to school. Most programs introduce the letters with sounds that are the easiest to pronounce first.

They may introduce four or five at

name often is the first word they learn to read and write.

Being familiar with the names of the letters in their own name helps children as they work on learning the whole alphabet. As you help your children or grandchildren learn about their names, talk about the names of the letters. Label things with their name so they can see it repeatedly in many places.

Make it a celebration when they can recognize their name, then celebrate again when they can write it.

It is important to check with your child’s teacher if you have questions about the expectations for learning the names and sounds for the letters of the alphabet.

Then you can support your children and grandchildren in this exciting learning that will open the world of reading and writing to them.

Usually, one vowel is introduced with those four or five letters and sounds as well. That leads to being able to learn to decode or sound out two- and three-letter words.

For example, if a child has learned the names and sounds of the letters m, s, f, b, t and then learn about the vowel a, they can begin to read and write three-letter words. We call them CVC words because they have a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern.

With those few letters we can build, read and write many words such as bat, mat, cat, sat, tab, Sam, am, at, and fast. This is an important step in beginning reading.

All of us learn things best when they are meaningful to us. Many preschool and kindergarten activities center on the children’s names. A child’s

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A Stillman Valley man charged with killing his ex-wife and their 3-year-old son in 2016 asked for and received more time for a defense expert to evaluate forensic reports expected to be used by prosecutors at his trial.

Christopher DeRango, the attorney for Duane Meyer, 41, told Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe on Tuesday that their expert needed more time to examine data provided by the Ogle County state’s attorney.

“Because of the cyber data age there are some antiquated file formats,” DeRango said. “There are hundreds of them.”

Meyer is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with the Oct. 19, 2016, Byron house fire in which Margaret “Maggie” (Rosko) Meyer, 31, was found dead. Their son, 3-year-old Amos Meyer, also was home at the time of the fire and later died.

Charges against Meyer were filed in October 2019.

DeRango said the defense’s expert would need until the end of January to compete the analysis.

The state did not object to the continuance and Roe set the next court date for 3 p.m. Feb. 15, 2024.

In September, DeRango petitioned prosecutors for any data obtained by electronic service providers, internet service providers, mobile phone carriers, and digital investigation platforms.

After receiving that information, DeRango requested and received a continuance during a Sept. 26 hearing telling Roe that he needed more time for his expert to review the reports and data provided by prosecutors.

At that hearing, Ogle County Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten said the state had provided the defense with “major forensic copies,” including phone records and text messages.

In January, DeRango entered 21 motions in limine and asked that they be sealed before debate in open court.

During a May 4 hearing, DeRango asked Roe to exclude information gathered by the prosecution from being presented to a jury, arguing that some of it was “irrelevant” or would be “prejudicial” to his client.

The purpose of a motion in limine (Latin for “on the threshold”) is to determine whether certain evidence may be presented to the jury.

Some of the motions made pertain to crime scene photos, autopsy photos, internet searches, cellphone photos, text messages between Meyer and others, surveillance videos of vehicles, and comments made to police officers during the investigation.

Leisten has argued that the evidence is relevant and, based on case law, should be allowed, adding that “the jury can weigh the evidence.”

DeRango said there were 6,000 pages of discovery and more than 1,000 text messages between Meyer and a friend before the deaths. He said the messages were made amid a “contentious divorce” and, he argued, some of the messages were taken out of context and should not be allowed as evidence.

Leisten disagreed, arguing that the messages showed it was a “planned homicide” and showed “what was going on in the defendant’s mind.”

Roe has yet to rule on all the motions in limine.

Maggie (Rosko) Meyer, a teacher at the Chana Education Center, filed for divorce in 2014. Court records show that the divorce was finalized in September 2016.

The hearing was one of many since murder charges were filed in October 2019.

In November 2022, Roe ruled that Duane Meyer’s cellphone records would be allowed as evidence at the trial.

Meyer remains at the Ogle County Correctional Center on a $10 million bond.

At 2:11 p.m., police responded to the Oregon Super Valu, 204 N 4th St., for the report of a retail theft. Upon completing the investigation for this incident, Brandon E. Anderson, 34, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for retail theft. Anderson was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was processed and released with a notice to appear.

Edwin M. Murillo-Valdez, 29, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 5:29 p.m. for operation of a vehicle when registration is suspended for non-insurance. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Dec. 2 Nicholas C. Bausman, 38, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 9:50 a.m. for operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. This violation occurred in the 300 block of Adams Street.

Dec. 3 Crystal F. Vegliando, 41, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:40 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol, Vegliando was also issued a traffic citation for speeding, 79 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Vegliando was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was processed and released with a notice to appear.

These violations occurred in the 1200 block of W. Washington Street.

Sixteen verbal warnings and three parking citations were issued Nov. 20Dec. 3.

OBITUARIES REUBEN H. BARNHART, III Born: September 24, 1947 in Oregon, IL Died: December 9, 2023 in Fairhope, AL Reuben H. Barnhart, Ill, 76, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023 in Fairhope, Alabama surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 24, 1947 in Oregon, Illinois the son of Reuben and Delores (Boyden) Barnhart, Jr. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1965 where he met his wife-to-be, Mary F. Dirksen.

They were married March 19, 1966 in Oregon, IL. Reuben worked for Quaker Oats/Golden Grain for most of his working life, and as a journeyman electrician. After retiring, Mary and Reuben moved back to their hometown of Oregon, Illinois, after moving away for his career. When he was younger, Reuben’s hobbies included being a volunteer fireman, hunting and fishing. Later in life he enjoyed woodworking and golfing. His family was always his first priority. His grandchildren were his and Mary’s greatest pride and joy. He is predeceased by his parents Reuben and De-

Benesh took a bye, pinned at 2:20, and picked up a forfeit to reach the third-place mat, where he met up with Hogan again, with the same result. Benesh lost a reverse and went to his back in a half nelson at 3:48 to finish fourth.

Three Hawks advanced to the consolation quarterfinal and lost, leaving them one win shy of the medal mix. At 157, Ethan Mowry had a bye and then lost a 16-2 major decision to eventual champion, Robby Nelson of Yorkville Christian. Mowry worked his way through the lower bracket with a bye,

a pin, and a forfeit, but was pinned in the round of eight by sixth-place medalist Sy Smith of Sandwich.

At 175, Jackson Glendenning was pinned by secon-place medalist Steven Kitzman of Dixon in the first round.

In consolation, he took a 4-2 decision, and won by a fall at 2:46 before he lost 11-4 to fourth-place finisher Lucas Blanton of Amboy.

At 215, Seth Rote was pinned by Will Howell of Dixon in the first period of his opener. He pinned twice to reach the quarterfinal where he was pinned at 1:17 by Ian Morris of Princeton.

Howell finished first and Morris took fourth.

Preston LaBay and Brantley Watts represented the Hawks at 132 and 144.

LaBay was pinned twice, and Watts lost a major decision and a fall. Both wrestlers were eliminated in the Friday evening session.

Dixon withstood a late surge by Yorkville Christian to take the team title with 204 points to 192 for the Mustangs. Gibson City-Melvin-SibleyFisher finished third, with Chicago schools DeLaSalle and St. Rita rounding out the top five. Oregon was 10th, well off the pace with 62 points

The Hawk wrestlers traveled to Stockton to face the Erie-Prophetstown Cardinals and the LenaWinslow-Stockton Pantherhawks Dec. 5. Oregon notched a fifth dual meet win over the Cardinals in the middle match of the triangular meet, but took a good, old-fashioned 62-3 whooping in the nightcap against the Pantherhawks.

Lena-Win trounced E-P 69-9 in the opener.

The Hawks rode five pins, four forfeits, and an injury default to a 60-24 win over Erie.

Pinning for Oregon were Ethan Mowry at 157 on a reverse to the back in 36 seconds, Anthony Bauer with a half nelson at 2:34, Briggs Sellers at heavyweight, running a chicken wing at 1:23, Colton Flaharty with a half nelson at 1:44 in the 126 pound match, and Preston LaBay at 132 with a come from behind scrape at 2:45.

Collecting the forfeits were Jackson Glendenning at 175, Andrew Young at 190, Nelson Benesh at 113 and Landon Ege at 120. Seth Rote had a driving takedown that resulted in an injury default at 215.

The Hawks forfeited 106 and 150.

Glendenning was turned with a chicken wing at 3:05. Young lost four sets of backpoints a 15-0 technical fall loss at 2:14.

Rote went over in a half nelson in 59 seconds. Sellers had a tough match, escaping to take the lead but thrown and pinned at 5:24.

106 was a double forfeit and Oregon got their sole win at 113, Benesh taking a 7-0 decision. Ege gave up two penalty points in a 6-1 loss. At 126, Flaharty was looking for a tying takedown when he got taken to his back and pinned at 5:39.

Pearson never got rolling in the 132 pound match, losing four sets of backpoints in a 15-0 technical fall loss at 3:22. Olsen trailed 8-0 when he was pinned in a half nelson at 1:21. In the final match at 144, Jayden Berry led 2-1 when he lost a takedown and was turned in a guillotine at 2:51.

The JV kept its undefeated season going (7-0) and was led by Aiden Currier with a 519 series. The JV2 was led

Bowling Perfect game: The Oregon Hawks

bowling team competed at the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Classic at IV Super Bowl in Peru Dec. 9 and came away with their second consecutive tournament championship, with Junior Gavvin Surmo setting several Oregon School records.

In the second game of the day Surmo recorded a 300 game, the third such game in Oregon’s 21-year history.

In addition, Surmo started the day with a 256 game and followed the 300 with a 245 game for an 802 3-game total, the highest three-game total in history.

At one point he rolled 29 of 30 possible strikes. Lastly following the three afternoon games, his six-game total of 14,04 also established a school record.

His performance was not the only high point in the day, Senior Brady Davis shot a 1256 series – including games of 246 and 256, good enough for a medal and fifth place on the day.

Davis was followed closely by Matthew Stahl with a 1,215 series – a seventh-place finish and RJ Keene with an 1,149 series - 13th place. Also bowling three games each were Ethan Smice 503 series and Codey Dunbar 488 series.

The team score of 6,015 is the highest

Walking to the Las Vegas airport to catch a flight, I ran across a few members of the Indiana Pacers. Ironically, we both had basketball on our minds, as they were in Vegas to play the Lakers in the championship of a new-fangled NBA tournament, while I was on my way to Utah to see my granddaughters play.

The only reason our paths crossed is that most of the roads near the airport were shut to transportation because of a shooting at nearby UNLV. I imagine they were on their way to the T-Mobile Arena for practice or maybe back to a hotel.

Besides the million-dollar salaries, the Pacers had a chance to earn another $500K individually if they beat the Lakers. Even with a loss, they would take home a hefty cash prize, but that is nature of things when you are the best in the world in

Unlike basketball at its highest form, I was on my way to see a bunch a 10-years-olds in their first game ever after one practice. But, home is where your heart is and my heart wasn’t on watching the NBA. It was on seeing loved ones double-dribbling, traveling, throwing air balls up and fortunately, refs at that level overlook most of it.

So while the Pacers and Lakers went at it in a sold-out arena and in front of millions on TV, I sat among a sparse crowd in grade-school gym enjoying myself more than if I was courtside in Vegas.

This upcoming week offers me a happy medium between the two with the Forreston boys tournament. One of the longest-running events in the state at over 60 years, the tourney is a nice blend of NUIC and BNC. It also may be the most stable holiday tourney in the state with virtually the same teams every year. Once you get into Forreston, you don’t give up your seat. Centrally located to most entrants, it’s like having a yearly family reunion with so many familiar faces among players, coaches, fans and officials.

Credit to Forreston for being the host with the most lo these many decades.

Here’s an idea for a coffee table book – a pictorial of iconic Illinois high-school gyms, of which there are many. Most are in downstate, where the sport reigns supreme.

Compare that with suburban cookie-cutter types with comfort, but no character. Another difference between downstate basketball versus elsewhere it that those gyms still have season ticket holders. Season ticket holders for basketball are a dying breed, as the popularity has waned.

Sure, some schools around here offer it, but not like the old days when it was a sought-after ticket, with some families keeping the same seats for generations.

Wherever you are watching your boys and girls basketball tournaments over the holidays, encourage not just your team, but also the officials.

14 SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity.

Dec. 3 Vincent J. Robinson, 43, of DeKalb, was arrested for driving while license revoked and an outstanding Woodford County warrant after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Moore Road at around 8:21 p.m. He was taken to the Ogle County Jail. Robinson was held in lieu of bond on the Woodford County warrant and released on a notice-to-appear on all Ogle County charges.

Dec. 5 Rolando Cruz, 60, of Hillcrest, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 7000 block of north Illinois Route 251 at around 12:26 p.m. He also was cited for driving while license revoked, no insurance and suspended registration. Cruz was taken to the Ogle County Jail and booked, then released on a notice-to-appear and given a future court date.

Hazem D. Algomai, 30, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 19000 block

of east Illinois Route 38 at 8:01 p.m. Algomai also was cited for speeding. Algomai was released on a notice-to-appear and given a future court date.

Antonio M. Martinez, 31, of Rochelle, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Illinois Route 64 at First Street in Kings at 11:25 p.m.

Martinez also was cited for expired registration and illegal transportation/possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle as a driver. He was released on a notice-to-appear.

Dec. 7 Daniel Rabago, 41, of Carpentersville, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for a registration violation at Woodlawn and Welty roads at around 10:58 a.m.

Rabago also was cited for no front plate and no insurance. Rababgo was released on a notice-toappear.

Yesenia Pasillas, 46, of Davis Junction, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 16000 block of East Lindenwood Road at around 3:41 p.m. Pasillas was released on a notice-to-appear.

At around 5:42 p.m., deputies and the Oregon

Marlon Exequiel Matute-Martinez, 24, of Mason City, Iowa, was arrested for no driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 88 mile marker 76 at around 9:10 a.m. Matute-Martinez also was cited for improper turn signal. Matute-Martinez was taken into custody without incident and released on a notice-to-appear.

Fire Protection District responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 500 block of West Pines Road in Oregon.

An investigation determined a Mack Anthem semi-truck and trailer driven by Arthur K. Guernsey, 56, of Sterling, failed to negotiate a curve while traveling east on West Pines Road, causing the semi-truck to leave the roadway and overturn. Guernsey was taken to Javon Bea Hospital-Rockton for non-life-threatening injuries.

Dec. 10 Silvia Rogers, 56, of Leaf River, was arrested for battery after deputies responded to 104 E. Third Street at the Leaf River United Methodist Church at around 10:34 a.m. She was taken to the Ogle County Jail and released on a notice-to-appear with a future court date. At around 1:27 p.m., deputies responded to the 100 block of Main Street in Leaf River and Rogers was arrested again, this time for criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to property. Rogers was taken to the Ogle County Jail for the second time in the same day for a crime against the same victim and was held pending a court appearance.

These charges are accusations and all subjects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
