By Karen Merlak The cold air is no match for the warmth felt among family and friends in our church. We look forward to spending the time together in worship. We are thankful to have each other and to spend time in celebration this year.

This morning in church, we were greeted by June Shafer. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout led a service of lessons and carols. Sheryl Hopkins, Nancy Hopkins, Vicki Hay, and I were readers for the service.

Our women’s group provided special music for one of the carols. Elizabeth Elliott, Vicki Hay, Nancy Hopkins, and I sang, “There’s a Song in the Air” with Deb Ohlwine accompanying us on piano.

For the first week of Advent, Elizabeth Elliott and Martha Johanssen lit the first candle of Hope. This Sunday, Justin and Ellen Rahn lit the candle for Peace. This is an exciting time of anticipation for the upcoming season.

Our church will be hosting the 2nd Annual Parking Lot Caroling on Sunday, December 19 at 2:00pm. Everyone is welcome to join us in singing our favorite

Christmas songs from your vehicle.

My sons, Matt and Clint have had a great time together in Hawaii. Clint is scheduled to return to his station just before Christmas. I am grateful they had each other over the past couple of months.

In just a couple of weeks, the school year will be half over. The days, weeks, and months have been flying by at a quickened pace. Even after all the preparations, I was not ready for it to happen so quickly.

I love Christmas. I especially love the decorations. For many years, I decorated several trees with many themes, displayed handmade Santas and snowmen, and wrapped lights around nearly everything.

In the last few years, I have only taken out a few decorations.

My love for the holiday and all that comes with it hasn’t diminished. I usually say that I just don’t have the time to get out all of the decorations. There is some truth to that. The holiday has started to change for me.

Twenty or so years ago, my goal was to make a memorable holiday for my children. Now, the quietness of the first Christmas has become much more important. I

enjoy the calmness of time alone in reflection instead of the busyness of activities.

God’s greatest gift to us all was the love He gave through Jesus. That love is carried to each other in the celebrations of the season. We share His love through joyful songs and in the quiet thoughtfulness of prayer.

I hope in the future I am able to find time to decorate like I used to. My classroom is decorated with many Christmas scenes. I sometimes miss the beauty of the lights on the multiple trees. For now, I am content to experience the holiday in a different way.

Understanding God’s love happens when we allow Him into our hearts. When we know Him, we are lit up from the inside out, brighter than any Christmas lights could shine.

I hope to see you next Sunday when we gather again for a time of worship. We will continue celebrating the season of Advent.

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — In Marco Nutrition, the line of those waiting to have their faces painted stretched the length of the room. A few blocks south, people continually came and went from the Polo fire station — some dinning in, some swinging by to grab take-out from the Polo Lions Club.

At Crossroads Community Church, children hurried from a game to a bouncy house to another game.

And, when the clock struck 6 p.m., a crowd of about 200 was gathered around the intersection of West Mason Street and Division Avenue, awaiting the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus.

“They [Santa and Mrs. Claus] were blown away with how many people came out to see them,” said D.J. Sanders, who drove the fire truck that served as Santa’s sleigh to the location. “It was just a great day overall.”

The third annual Polo Christmas Festival was held Dec. 4, with various events taking place throughout the day — most of them in or around the city’s downtown.

“It seemed that everything was packed everywhere you went,” said Sanders, the festival committee president. “It was excellent. We were blown away with how many people came out.”

One of the most popular events new this year were the historical trolley tours of Polo, he said. The tours were led by members of the Polo Historical Society, and it’s definitely something they’ll look at continuing in the future, Sanders said.

The variety of activities was what brought Barb Reiners and her family to Polo from Dixon.

Reiners’ daughter — 4-year-old Olivia Reiners — was as excited to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus as she was about her unicorn face paint.

“And I got unicorn shoes and a unicorn hat,” Olivia said while jumping around after showing off the design on her face.

It was their first time attending the Polo Christmas Festival, but it won’t be the last, Reiners said.

“This is the best festival we’ve been to this year,” she said.

The festival committee always is looking for new ideas and new members, Sanders said. They’re planning on doing some fundraisers in 2022 to help fund the festival, he said.

Forreston High School in adaptive pause due to COVID-19 Tournament canceled as high school students move to remote learning

ehinton@oglecountynews.com FORRESTON — A 60-year basketball tradition at Forreston High School has been cancelled due to an outbreak of positive COVID-19 cases among high school students.

“Due to Forreston High School entering an adaptive pause or period of remote learning from Dec. 7-17, we will regrettably be unable to host the Forreston Holiday Tournament this year,” Forrestville Athletic Director Kyle Zick said in an email Tuesday evening.

The 16-team tournament was slated to begin on Saturday, marking its 61st year of competition. The tournament, held in the high school and junior high

gyms, would have ended on Dec. 17.

Forrestville Valley Superintendent Sheri Smith addressed the COVID-19 issue in a Dec. 6 letter to parents on the district’s website.

“This is an important COVID-19 update. Today at Forreston High School, 12 students tested positive through our on-site BinaxNOW testing procedures. This is 4.76% of the high school student population,” Smith said.

She said the district’s nurse is working on contact tracing and will be in contact with Ogle County Health Department to determine what next steps are necessary.

“This is the largest number we have seen at FHS since the pandemic began,” Smith said.

High school students were scheduled to begin remote learning on Dec. 8. Remote learning is scheduled to end Dec. 17 for high school students, which also marks the end of the second

semester. Christmas break runs from Dec. 20 to Jan. 3.

As of Tuesday, pre-K through 8th grade students will continue to have in-school classes.

“At this time, school will continue to operate in person. If we find cases are linked, we will take the necessary actions for test-to-stay protocols. You will be contacted individually if this directly affects your student,” Smith said in the letter.

“If your student is experiencing symptoms, please call the school so we can arrange for testing. However, do NOT send your student to school with symptoms under any circumstance.

Testing is available as a drive-thru option to avoid students with symptoms and close contact situations,” she said. “I would ask for your patience as

we navigate our week ahead. We will continue to communicate if further mitigation strategies become necessary.”

Water use survey will be mailed to Polo residents The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) requires every water supplier to develop and implement a comprehensive cross connection control program for the elimination of existing cross connections and prevention or protection from all future cross connections.

Regulations are in place to protect our drinking water systems A requirement of the program is to conduct a survey of all water customers every three years. Polo water customers will receive a survey post card in

the mail soon, if not already.

City officials area asking residents to follow the directions on the post card for completion of the survey. There is no cost and it takes only a few moments to complete. Surveys should be completed within 30 days of receipt of the post card.

Polo is utilizing the services of Aqua Backflow from Elgin to assist with program operations, including the survey. They specialize in cross connection control program management. Note that if you have or require backflow protection, you may be also

Polo’s Cross Connection Control Program is designed to safeguard public health.

“We ask for your cooperation with our program, its enforcement, and any requests for information that comes from Aqua Backflow or Polo staff,” city officials said in a press release.

Contest, it is open to all homes and businesses within the Polo School District. Residents will be able to vote for their favorite decorations online and winners will be announced in four categories: People’s Choice/Best in Show, Best Use of Lights, Most Creative, Best Business.

Crowd turns out for village’s Festival of Lights

ehinton@shawmedia.com Michelle Pineda’s blue Jeep was decorated to the nines last Saturday when members of her family along with several friends, packed their vehicles with toys and headed west from Elgin to Mt. Morris’ Festival of Lights.

Pineda organized the Toys for Tots drive in honor of her brother in-law, Matt Wissbach, a Mt. Morris resident who was tragically killed in a September auto accident in Winnebago County. Wissbach is survived by his wife and four children.

“Matt was my brother in-law and we wanted to do this for him,” she said. “My Jeep is full and we have other here with their Jeeps and vehicles who wanted to donate too.”

Lee, Whiteside counties see surge in COVID cases

rrodgers@shawmedia.com Whiteside and Lee counties are seeing a surge in coronavirus cases, and health officials continue to emphasize the importance of becoming vaccinated and wearing masks to curb the spread.

Whiteside County had 344 cases last week compared to 185 the week prior. Most of the cases – 131 – are people younger than 20.

There were 80 new cases from Saturday to Monday.

Lee County reported 194 cases across the week compared to 58 the week before.

Because of the hike in cases and contact tracing, the Whiteside County Health Department is experiencing a high volume of outgoing and incoming calls and is asking residents to be patient for a follow-up and not to leave more than one message.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strengthened its recommendation on COVID-19 vaccine booster doses.

Currently, 11% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations have increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 236 total COVID-19 hospitalizations.

LOCAL HISTORY

1965 Dancing Santa and Miss Griffin put on a show

L

inda and I went over to the museum early in the week of our Polo Historical Society party to clear off the tables where we had been working this fall. We also had to put away the totes that held Christmas decorations when we had decorated the tree the week before.

When we walked into the museum there was a box on the table that had arrived from Texas. It contained the Army dress jacket of Richard Bentley and his flag. Remember he was the one who had kept all the history of the National Guard Band that had been the Kable Band originally.

Beth Bentley had emailed me about her father’s dress jacket wondering if we wanted it along with his flag. I told her we had a wonderful military part to our museum and we would be delighted to get it. So there was the box all the way from Texas.

Linda went back home to get her camera so we could get a picture to send to Beth. As we opened it and took

Cynthia Reynolds probably can tell us what each one means since she was in the service.

That evening I sent the pictures by email to Beth and she was so pleased.

She later will send us some more items she has that belonged to Helen Bentley, Richard’s mother. Remember, Helen worked at Bracken’s Style Shop.

I remember her well.

That night in bed I suddenly remembered I had forgotten to bring to the front of the museum the Santa that had been in Muench’s Shoe Store during Christmas and also Miss Griffin, the doll. The evening of the party I

got there early so everyone could see them and to make certain that they were part of our Christmas decorations.

The evening of the party I introduced the dancing Santa from 1965 and Miss Griffin. Miss Griffin advertised Griffin Allwhite in the store and their slogan said, “For your white shoes.

Whitens marvelously. Will not rub off.”

Later on as we were cleaning up, Mike plugged in the dancing Santa and Santa surprised us all by giving us a little dance. We just assumed he would not work after all these years. Santa put on quite a show and everyone grabbed their cameras. It was a fun way to end the evening.

You can go into Facebook under Polo Historical Society and see Santa dance again after he charmed children many years ago. There was a picture of him with one of the little boys in the community. I will see if I can find it tucked away somewhere.

Santa and a parade all part of the fun in Forreston

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON — Hugs were plentiful in Forreston when Santa Claus stopped by to visit.

About 100 children got to visit with Santa and share their wish lists with him during the village’s Christmas in the Country celebration Dec. 3-4. Santa met kids in Memorial Park on the evening of Dec. 3, and visited the library the next morning.

Mackenzie Thiel, 7, asked him for a toy puppy, and Addy Heslop, 7, asked for new American Girl doll stuff.

Mackenzie’s little sister, 5-year-old Emmerson Thiel, took her Christmas wish a step further.

“I want a new puppy that’s real,” Emmerson said.

Julie Heeren, a Christmas in the Country committee member who oversaw Santa’s visit this year, said she

adored watching him with the children.

“I think our Santa is amazing,” Heeren said. “We’re just so blessed to have him. He does a wonderful job with the children, gives them great big hugs.

“The compassion and the love that Santa gives the children, they really that this time of year,” she added. “I don’t know how to put it into words.”

Heeren said that, next year, she’d like to have some music going during visits with Santa and ideally throughout downtown Forreston.

Santa arrived at Memorial Park on a Forreston Fire Protect District fire truck as part of the lighted parade — a new event this year for Christmas in the County.

The parade went really well for a first time, committee member Jane Koeller said. There were a variety of entries — vehicles, but also people walking, with wagons and horses, she said.

“I know a lot of the villages have something much bigger, but I was really happy with how it all came together,” Koeller said.

Sterling mourns firefighter who died in line of duty

STERLING – Sterling is mourning the loss of its native son and veteran firefighter, Lt. Garrett Ramos, who died Dec. 4 after the floor beneath him gave way while fighting an early morning inferno in rural Rock Falls.

Ramos, 38, who was with the department nearly a decade, was posthumously promoted to captain Monday, and union Local 2031, of which he was president, has set up a fund for his wife, Britney, and their daughters Ruthie, 3, and Kepa 2. Public funeral and memorial services are set.

Gov. JB Pritzker Monday ordered all state flags to be flown at half-staff until dusk Thursday, the day of Ramos’ funeral. Mayor Skip Lee also ordered all flags in Sterling to be lowered to half staff until after the service.

After learning of his death, hundreds of people lined the streets of downtown Sterling Saturday evening, many holding candles and American flags, to honor Ramos, the first Sterling firefighter to be killed in the line of duty.

The fire broke out shortly before midnight in a home at 10031 Ridge Road; 13 departments and a CGH EMS support unit responded.

After the floor collapsed, firefighters rescued Ramos, and EMS crews attempted life-saving techniques en route to CGH Medical Center, where doctors continued life-saving efforts, to no avail. He died of injuries suffered in the fall.

In a news conference Saturday afternoon, Police Chief Alex Chavira called Ramos’ death “a devastating loss” for the city.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, the Sterling Fire Department escorted the body of Ramos from CGH Medical Center to McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. The procession stopped in front of the Sterling Fire Department, where Ramos had been a firefighter since October 2012.

Members of Ramos’ immediate family rode in the funeral homes’ limousines during the procession. Other family members, including his aunt Mary Ramos Ortiz and his cousin Julio Ortiz, both of Dixon, stood outside the fire department holding American flags and candles.

Mary Ramos Ortiz described the community’s support as “beautiful.”

“I love it. It means so much,” she said. “I can’t believe that he’s gone, though, that this is all for him. It’s unbelievable.”

tated. It’s just really tough. But I’m happy the community came out to show their support. Our family is wellknown in Sterling, and he was loved by everyone here.”

Retired fire captains Gary Dettman and Mike Wheeler attended the procession. Both knew Ramos for years: Dettman’s daughter went to high school with Ramos and Ramos served on the fire department under Wheeler.

“He was a very dedicated, hardworking young man,” Dettman said.

“He always strived for excellence and always did his best. He made the fire department his career, and he had all the potential in the world. He did a very demanding job greatly.”

Wheeler said that Ramos was “a natural firefighter, he was so proactive and talented.”

“The fire department can’t ever replace him,” Wheeler said. “He did so much so well.”

Ramos, yet she came to the fire department to honor his memory.

“I just wanted to be here,” Rosengren said. “Firefighters are always there for our community, and I wanted to be here. I’m here to show support for him, for all firefighters, and all that they do for us. It’s my way to say thank you.”

A memorial was created outside of the Sterling Fire Department, featuring Ramos’ fire jacket and boots. Flowers, candles, figurines and American flags were placed nearby.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating into the fire and Ramos’ death.

Ramos was a Sterling native and 2002 Sterling High graduate. Among others, he is survived by his wife of 6 years and their daughters; his parents Ed and Jeannie Ramos; and his sister, Jennifer Brannon.

Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Sterling High School Fieldhouse, 22 E. Miller Road. Uniformed personnel are asked to be at the fieldhouse at 5:30 p.m. to participate in a

uniformed walk-through to honor Ramos.

Funeral services were Thursday at Westwood Sports Complex, 1900 Westwood Drive, off LeFevre Road. McDonald Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

That service was to be followed by followed by a procession to the Main Fire Station, 110 W. Fifth St. downtown, where a fallen firefighter tribute will be conducted.

Masks were requested at all services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are being requested for his wife and children. The Garrett Ramos Memorial Fund has been established at all Sauk Valley Bank branches, and an online option is being created.

Also posted on the city of Sterling’s Facebook page Sunday: “As we all mourn the loss of Lt. Ramos, we are asking the community to show support by replacing your porch light with a red light.

On May 2, 2020, Boone County Sheriff Deputy and Lindenwood resident, Scott R. Bowers, perished as a result of a cardiac event.

Bowers was a supporter of the Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Protection District and to honor that support, the Bowers family recently made a donation to the district.

“Scott was a great supporter of the Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Protection District. He was an outstanding police officer, father, husband, and friend to

all that were fortunate enough to know him,” said Ryan Schweitzer, a volunteer fireman and EMT for Lynn-ScottRock FPD. “In his honor, his family has provided a generous donation so that Lynn-Scott-Rock FPD may continue to acquire the newest and best equipment in hopes of helping others in their time of need.”

The LSRFPD was able to secure two sets of DeWalt battery operated tools, one set for each station - Lindenwood and Davis Junction. Each set includes

a cut off tool, reciprocating saw, light tower, angle grinder and a fiber cement cutting shear used for cutting automotive glass along with additional batteries and saw blades, said Schweitzer in a press release.

Members of Bowers’ family were present at the fire station on Oct. 23 to

meet with several fire department members and dedicate the tools in Scott’s honor.

“We all dearly miss Scott but know that his memory will live on, and the generosity provided by the family will help countless others for many years to come,” Schweitzer said.

not from Oregon. I met a gal here that I thought was cute, a little red-headed freckle-faced gal. A year and a half later, she took me for better or worse. Best thing that ever happened to me.

We lived in other cities, but she always wanted to return to Oregon. We finally did make it back to Oregon and purchased a business and we ran it for more than 30 years.

We always thought it an honor to be involved in something for the betterment of our community.

We raised our family here and are very proud of this area. When talk of the fall festival started, we were very glad to jump in. We did and served on the committee for 20 years.

Again, thank you Oregon fr adopting me and making this the greatest place to live and to raise a family.

The Roc hell e Ch apte r of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8739 are honoring local heroes by placing wreathes on the graves of veterans as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. VFW Post 8739 is helping to lay wreathes on the graves of veterans buried at Daysville Cemetery in Oregon. They also are sponsoring the cost of 10 wreathes.

There are 201 veterans buried in Daysville Cemetery, including a Revolutionary War veteran. Special wreathes for each branch of the U.S. military will be placed Dec. 18 at 1 p.m.

The Rochelle Chapter is adopting

St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Rochelle and will place wreaths Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. An abbreviated ceremony will take place at Lawnridge after the conclusion of the wreath laying at St. Patrick’s.

The Rochelle Chapter also is accepting grave-specific requests at St. Patrick’s, Lawnridge and Trinity cemeteries in Rochelle, Daysville Cemetery and other local cemeteries. You may attend to place the wreath on a specific grave, if so desired.

Reading is still a necessary skill in today’s world A

ccess to books, or reading materials, is a basic need if we are going to develop lifelong readers who enjoy reading. What if we consider access to books when we buy gifts for our children and grandchildren during the holidays and for birthdays?

First, we might want to expand our definition of “books.” Let’s think in broader terms of access to reading materials. That includes many options for even the most reluctant readers.

Consider magazines, almanacs, catalogues, or blogs and websites. We can also consider the possibilities of e-readers and electronic books. Within that list there are several potential ideas for gift giving.

video games such as Minecraft that will appeal to those who enjoy playing those games. There is built-in motivation to read these books because they give tips and insights into playing the games.

Children’s cookbooks are also plentiful. These also have built-in motivation for reading. They can also help build a bond as we read in order to bake or cook something together with our children and grandchildren.

The librarians at your local public library would be happy to suggest books based on your child’s interests.

They can also tell you the most popular books for your children’s ages.

Many times, classroom teachers can offer suggestions as well.

Speaking of libraries, if you don’t already have a library card, you might want to stop in your local library to see about getting one. That can be a gift for the whole family.

We do want our children and grandchildren to have access to all kinds of reading materials. We also want to encourage them to read.

Positive attitudes and motivation for reading are also basic needs if we want them to be lifelong readers who can and do read. We can show that

reading is important by including reading in our gift giving.

If we search for materials that match their interests, we increase the chance that they will want to read.

We can spend time reading to and with them as well which will also increase motivation.

Reading is a necessary skill in the world in which we live. Information comes at us continually from all sources.

Some of it is in print that we must be able to read and understand. Being able to read can and will make a difference for our children and grandchildren in their lives both in and out of school now and in the future.

We should do anything we can do to help them value the gift of reading.

Of that tax levy, $164,334 is for the village of Forreston and $28,330 is for the Forreston Public Library. Combined, the 2021 levy represents an $8,392 increase over the 2020 tax levy.

There are 11 funds tax levy dollars go toward, the largest allocation of which is

$42,200 to the General Fund. The Insurance Tax Fund follows with $36,500 set to come in, and in a close third is the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund with $35,500 allocated for the coming year.

NEWS BRIEFS Polo council OKs 2021 tax levy

POLO – Polo City Council members on Dec. 6 approved a 2021 tax levy of $396,582, according to Alderperson D.J. Sanders.

The approval came on a 5-1 vote, with Alderperson Randy Schoon voting no, Sanders said.

The 2021 levy represents a $18,545 increase over the 2020 tax levy.

Tax levy dollars are split between 11 funds, the largest being the IMRF fund at $75,000, followed by General Corporation Fund at $67,250 and the Insurance Fund at $66,500.

ith college football in the limelight over the weekend, a few thoughts.

It is a sport out of control, but also something extremely entertaining.

I’ve been watching it for over 50 years and am convinced the action has never been better.

So, why it is out of control?

Recent defections by coaches and outrageous salaries being paid them.

Ten million dollar yearly contracts, plus more benefits than you or I would ever see. It has become an arms race for athletic departments all over the country to find the right coach.

Even the attitude of the players have changed. If they are not getting enough playing time, it is not uncommon for them to transfer. An allegiance to good old State U is gone.

They are really no different than their coaches, other than the fact they are basically free labor. Taking your

ball and going elsewhere is more of a reflection of society.

However, society loves college football, with many of us getting our indoctrination as undergrads. Tailgating, homecoming, halftime with the band, storied rivalries and the heady atmosphere of sitting in the stands with thousands of others becomes addicting.

Then with nonstop games on TV from early to late on Saturday, the habit continues through our adult life.

I admit it, I’m hooked and spend far too much time worshiping the gods of college football than I should.

the adult males I heard on a University of Utah football postgame radio call-in show. The team just won the PAC-12 title and for the first time ever qualified for the Rose Bowl, the so-called “Granddaddy of them all.”

Grown men were in tears on the phone, as they shared what this meant to them. With the Utah football team headed to Pasadena on New Year’s Day, it was a lifetime dream fulfilled.

I wonder if things such as weddings, family births and children’s graduations rated as high?

I do know this. People in Salt Lake City will pay any amount of money to see their beloved college team at the Rose Bowl. That is the power of college football.

Those of us NIU grads sure got excited when the Huskies made the Orange Bowl in 2013. I don’t remember much about Christmas that year, but the trip to Miami for a New Year’s Day

Bowl by my alma mater sticks with me.

Before the 40-plus bowl games (that’s absurd in itself) commence, one more regular-season game will be played. It is Army and Navy going at it this Saturday.

You would think that with all the feverish devotion to college football, these two service academies would set themselves above it.

Not so. Their game might be the most intense of them all, with true bragging rights at stake.

Even a best-selling book was written about it by John Feinstein.

There is no escaping the stranglehold college football has on us. TV knows that and holds colleges hostage by paying them billions of dollars for the right to show their product.

And to think Teddy Roosevelt nearly outlawed the sport more than 100 years ago.

Marlatt led 14-0 when he pinned with a half nelson at 5:29. Halvorson pinned with a cradle in 57 seconds, Seth Stevens stepped over for a fall at 4:12 and Elijah George won by disqualification.

Jared Glendenning and Dalton McCammon won by decisions. LeBay, and Sellers lost by first period pins and Collin Winterland got roughed up and was pinned in a high half at 3:06.

With a juggled lineup due to COVID-19 restrictions at home in the Blackhawk Center, Oregon gave up two forfeits before they traded pins with Ridgeview to end up tied at 42. The forfeits proved costly. They are the sixth criteria to break a tie and Ridgeview won 2-0 in that category.

Oregon was down 24-0 early after the forfeits and pins on LeBay and Ethan Mowry, but they came back with half nelsons by Halvorson at 1:05, and Jared Glendenning on a restart at 2:50.

Jackson Glendenning scored a takedown to the back in a half nelson in one minute, and Stevens pulled his opponent back at 1:50 to tie the score. Eckerd took a wing out front at 1:57 and Ethan George posted a shoulder at 3:12.

The Hawks lost the next three to trail by six.

Landen Elder, Rote, and Jonathon Alaniz all went down to first period pins. Sellers came through with a win, driving his opponent to his back in a half nelson at 3:42 to tie the score.

The Fulton meet started with double forfeits and a forfeit to Mowry. Rote, Ruter, and Ethan George also won by forfeit. Four Hawks won by falls.

Halvorson used a double chicken at 1:03, Jackson Glendenning caught a cradle at 1:47, Stevens took a wing out front at 1:30, and Sellers reversed out the back into a half nelson at 3:05. Four Oregon wrestlers lost by falls. LeBay was rolled to his back at 4:49, Jared Glendenning was taken over the front in a half nelson at the first period buzzer, David Sosa, was turned in a half nelson at 2:18, and Andrew Young was reversed in a half nelson at 2:26.

Bowling The Dixon girls bowling team placed third at the Oregon Hawk Invite on Dec. 4 at Plum Hollow Lanes in Dixon, while host Oregon’s Ava Wight took third individually.

Dixon finished with 4,766 total pins to finish behind LaSalle-Peru (5,265) and Sycamore (5,045). and Oregon was fourth with a 4,6146.

Wight rolled a 1,160 six-game series to finish behind only Hall’s Sarah Beier (1,204) and Rockford Lutheran’s Melanie Horn (1,184).

Oregon’s Paige Beauchem was 11th (1,011).

Oregon’s Mackenzie Alford (916)finished in 23rd.

Kendra Ehrler (850) also bowled six games for Oregon, while Trinity Hultquist (587 in 5 games) and Kylie Krug (90 in one game) split the other series.

The Hawks’ Red squad in the boys tournament was the top local finisher at the Hawk Invite finishing fifth just ahead of Sterling and Dixon.

Sycamore won the team title with a 5,659 total pinfall. Oregon Red shot a 5,339.

Oregon Red’s Isaac Kaltenbrun took 10th with a 1,168, Jackson Werren (16th, 1,112), and

Oregon White’s Gavvin Surmo was (18th, 1,107) . Other bowlers for Oregon Red were Brandon Rowe (1,049), Brady Davis (1,023) and Stylar Klapp (987).

Bowling for Oregon White were Roberto Hernandez (1,044), Codey Dunbar (944), Immanuel Arellano (886) and Bryan Immel (877).

Girls basketball AFC 34, Oregon 29: The Raiders outscored the Hawks 20-15 in the second half at the Blackhawk Center.

Taylor Jahn had 18 points to pace AFC, while Tatum Stroh scored nine.

Mariah Drake’s nine points led Oregon, with Hadley Lutz and Mya Engelkes adding eight each.

Polo 58, Warren 36: The Marcos built their lead throughout the game, then pulled away with a 20-6 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to pick up an NUIC win at home.

Lindee Poper had a double-double of 33 points and 14 rebounds, and she also blocked three shots for Polo. Natalie Nelson added eight points, five rebounds and four assists, Kadence Sheaffer had six points and four steals, and Nicole Boelens finished with five points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Madelyn Jones dished four assists for the Marcos.

Forreston 35, Fulton 27: The Cardinals trailed 17-15 at halftime, but outscored the Steamers 11-5 in the third quarter and 9-5 in the fourth in an NUIC East win at home.

Hailey Greenfield had 14 points and six rebounds for Forreston (2-7, 1-0 NUIC East), while Jenna Greenfield finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Brooke Boettner added six points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Letrese Buisker chipped in eight rebounds and two assists.

Donning battery-operated lights and various Christmas-themed additions, the vehicles headed west around dusk.

At the David L. Rahn Junior High School, around 15 vehicles, including Mt. Morris Fire Department vehicles, lined up for a short parade to the Campus Square where most of the night’s events were held.

Santa rode in the back of a white pickup truck and arrived by the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell to cheers from kids, waiting to tell them what they wanted for Christmas.

Organizer Jerry Stauffer emceed the event and gave the signal to light the surrounding trees on the square, Stauffer said the event would not have been possible without the help of many volunteers.

“I would just like to thank all the volunteers that worked hard to make it all happen and especially all that turned out on such a beautiful evening to make it a huge success,” he said. “I think the crowd was around 600 or so by my best ‘guesstimate’. Santa visited with at least 150 kids and we almost ran out of food. Overall it was a huge success.”

Mary Ellen Ludwig, 84, of Forreston, died Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Generations at Neighbors in Byron.

Mary Ellen was born October 16, 1937 to Ted and Faith (Miller) Knodle. She married the love of her life, Norman L. Ludwig on January 14, 1956. Mary Ellen cherished her days working alongside Norm on the farm, raising their three sons, shaping them into the hardworking men they are today.

Carl was born on August 5, 1928 to Carl G and Eda W. Johnson Nelson in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Senn High School, Chicago and attended Northwestern University, Evanston. He married Leona A. Hartje at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, his home church, in Chicago on October 9, 1954, where Leona

Born: February 27, 1939 in South Bend, IN Died: December 2, 2021 in Rockford, IL Oregon, IL - Eugene Everett Stilson, 82, died December 2, 2021. He was born February 27,1939 to Everett and Gladys (Boyle) Stilson in South Bend, Indiana.

He graduated from Central High School in 1957 and Manchester University in 1961.

From there he moved to Oregon, Illinois where he graduated from Oregon Bible College and went into the ministry for the

meticulous notes describing some of the antiques which have been passed onto future generations. She was a talented seamstress, sewing and mending her boys’ clothing along with doing alterations for many people in the community. She also loved to quilt and made several complicated quilts for her family. She canned, cooked and baked, keeping everyone well fed. Every meal Mary Ellen made was delicious, but her carrot cake was more than memorable as was her colorful cupboard of leftover labels. Her grandchildren were read to, sang to, given sewing lessons and allowed to sell the family sweet corn under her watchful eye. Many memories were made gathered around the dining room table, playing games and watching the traffic go by in the front yard. Mary Ellen laughed often, and so did others around her as she shared

anecdotes, stories and her funny sayings.

She made everyone feel at home. She loved her husband, her kids, her grandkids and her friends. She was one of a kind.

Mary Ellen was generous with her time and volunteered as a youth leader at her church, Forreston United Methodist Church, was active with the local girl scout troop and served for many years as an election judge.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, her parents, and her sister, Jeanette.

Mary Ellen’s life was celebrated Saturday, December 4th at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston. Burial was in Haldane Cemetery.

Carl and Leona moved to Mt. Morris in 1960 where they raised their three children, Beth, David and Rick on the farm.

In conjunction with farming, Carl had pursued and led a successful career in the television and film industry with numerous commercials, films and multi-media events to his credit. His career began in 1948 with Wilding Studios in Chicago.He later joined Kling studios followed by Studio Seven as President and Producer and Film Faire with work on location from New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. He retired from the industry in 1991 from his company in Harvard, IL though he continued to volunteer as a videographer and editor for his many charitable and volunteer work and organizations. He served on the Boards of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, The Chicago Farmers (President),

LutheranBrotherhood, Ogle County 4-H Foundation, Northern Illinois Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America stewardship committee, and the Village of Progress (President).He was a member of the Leaf River American Legion, OgleCounty Farm Bureau (50 plus years) and volunteered with the Ogle County Sheriff’s Association. Carl’s faith-filled life led him to serve at St. James Lutheran on the church council, as a Sunday School teacher, Luther League sponsor for many Luther League conventions around the country, church usher and as the consummate acolyte instructor.

Carl is survived by his wife of 67 years, Leona; daughter, Beth Nelson (John) Chase, and sons, David (Gretchen) Nelson and Richard (Michelle) Nelson. Grandchildren; Brittany (Nate) Drozd, Craig Nelson, Josh(Emily) Nelson, Derrick Nelson, Trevor (Sarah Harris) Nelson, Johannah (Tim) Coates,Jocelyn Chase and Abi (Basil) El-Ghazzawy. Great grandchildren; Lauren, Annabelle, Natalie, Nathan and

Nelson Drozd, Chloe El-Ghazzawy and Jasper Coates; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Eda, siblings and their spouses: Wendell (Betty) Nelson, Lorraine (John) Rabette, Marlene(Dean) Nelson and Frankie Nelson. his parents in law, Ernest and Rose Hartje, sister/brother in law, Rogene (Hartje) and Al Poppen; daughter in law, Lois Nelson, and nephew, Mark Poppen.

Visitation will be held at Finch Funeral Home Friday, Dec 10 from 4 to 6 PM and a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, Dec 11 at 10:30 AM at St. James Lutheran Church, Forreston, IL with Pastor Steve Erickson officiating. Please observe Covid-19 precautions.

Church of God General Conference. He Married Janet (Turner) Stilson on May 25, 1963 and they moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where he pastored two small churches. Gene had many interests over the years, including pursuit of graduate degrees.

He had a B.S from Manchester, a B Th from Oregon Bible College, and when he was called to teach at Oregon Bible College, he pursued a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Northern Illinois University, and a master’s degree in New Testament Studies from Wheaton College. He taught Bible courses at OBC for 21 years serving also as Academic Dean. When he left that work, he worked for another 20+years for Crest Foods in Ashton, Illinois retiring in 2013. He also helped to establish Rock River Christian

College in Beloit, Wi and taught there for ten years serving as President for several of those years. Gene successfully demolished his old house and rebuilt a new one on the same lot in 1977-78. He was a man of many talents. He played viola and piano and was a vocal soloist. he loved to travel. His favorite trip was to Greece in the footstep of St. Paul.

In 2005 he and Janet traveled with Randy to 16 cities in Europe. Gene was a member of Oregon Church of God and helped plant two churches in Rockford, Family Bible Fellowship on N. Ridge and Winnebago New Life. He taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, filled the pulpit and played piano when needed. He is predeceased by his parents, his father-inlaw, Willis Turner, and his niece, Beth Harrison Mattison. He is survived by his wife, his

sons Richard and Randy, and his daughter Marianne Stilson, grandchildren, Joel Stilson, Amoury Hudson, Jessi Hudson, Bijoux Stilson and Finnigan Stilson and great granddaughter Adelaide Hubbell, and mother-in-law, Ida Mae Turner. Gene believed in the promises made to believers in the blessed hope that Jesus is coming again and will resurrect him from the grave to eternal life in the Kingdom of God on earth. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, December 10, 2021 at Farrell Holland Funeral Home, 110 South 7th Street in Oregon, IL. Please wear a mask to attend the visitation. A private graveside service will be held at Emmanuel Cemetery in Paynes Point.

Nov. 29 Kristopher M. Mockovak, 20, of Shannon, was arrested at 12:47 p.m., on two outstanding Ogle County warrants for failure to appear on a burglary charge and a failure to appear on a theft charge, less than $500. Mockovak was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Dec. 2 At 11:56 p.m., Dominique L. Penn, 32, of Mt. Morris, was issued a traffic citation for no valid driver’s license. A passenger in Penn’s vehicle, Searcia L. Warren, 33, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on two outstanding warrants for failure to appear, one out of South Dewitt County, and one out of South Ford County. Warren was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 500 block of W. Washington Street.

Nov. 30 At 3:08 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of S. 9th Street resulting in the arrest of Breanna T. L. Lloyd, 22, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Lloyd was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Paul C. Hermes, 27, of Dixon, was arrested at 6:36 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear.

Dec. 3, Shauntai S. Reyes, 34, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:55 a.m. on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant for failure

Ryan M. Henry, 32, of Rochelle, was issued a traffic citation at 9:16 p.m. for speeding, 52 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. Daysville Road.

Dec. 4 Monica K. Miller, 42, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:15 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Miller was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

One parking ticket and four verbal warnings were issued Nov. 22-28.

Donna Jean Blume, 79, of Oregon, IL passed away on December 5, 2021.

Donna was born on September 5, 1942 in Chana, IL to Francis and Mary (Gilroy) Zell.

She worked as a bartender at the VFW in Oregon for 14 years. She enjoyed Harness Racing for 20 years, as well as enjoyed Nascar. The thing she loved most was spending time and watching her grandchildren and great

grandchildren.

Donna is survived by her husband, Larry; 3 children, Sue (Scott) Blumeyer of Oregon, Gary (Kathy) Blume of Oregon and Duane (Sandra) Blume of Oregon; 7 grandchildren, Austin, Sara, Amanda, Rachel, Tyler, Kevin and Kendall; 7 great grandchildren, Karter, Khloe, Adalynn, Kasson, Esther, Lucy and Karecey; As well as 1 sister, Doris Danekas.

Marsdon Stukenberg, 83, of Forreston, IL passed away Friday December 3, 2021 at Rush University Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was born October 13, 1938 in Freeport, IL to Donald and Margaret (DeWall) Stukenberg. On November 1, 1958 he married Barbara Plum in Forreston, IL. Barbara passed away August 17, 2011. He was a member of Forreston United Methodist Church. Marsdon was a lifelong farmer on his family farm. He

enjoyed dirt track racing, motorcycle trips with friends, camping, spending the winters in Florida with his camper, and spending time with family. He is survived by his two sons Randy (Jen Graves) Stukenberg and Mike (Colleen) Stukenberg both of Forreston, IL; five grandchildren Matthew (Maureen) Stukenberg of Arlington Heights, IL, Jacob Stukenberg of College Station, TX, Anna (Alex Wand) Stukenberg of Franklin, TN, Ryan (Lauren) Stukenberg of Breese, IL, and Nathan (Kristyn Hannah) Stukenberg of Des Plaines, IL; and four great-grandchildren Piper, Pax, Parker, and Pierce. She was employed as a bank teller at Community Bank of Oregon/Harvard from 2006 to 2019.

She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church. STATE POLICE Illinois State Police activity for November

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 503 citations, 601 written warnings, and made nine criminal arrests during the month of November.

Speeding accounted for 297 citations, 81 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 17 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

There were 28 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.

Troopers investigated 22 traffic crashes,

assisted 79 motorists, and conducted 172 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 28 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were 5 arrests for driving while under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated 1 fatal traffic crash in November.

OREGON – A 43-year-old Oregon man is in Ogle County jail on $250,000 bond, accused of possession of child pornography.

Charles M. Christensen was arrested Dec. 2 and charged with five counts of possession of pornography involving children younger than 13, punishable by three to seven years in prison, and two counts of possession of pornography involving children older than 13, punishable by two to five years, the State Police Division of Criminal Investigation said in a news release Friday.

Christensen was arrested after a search of his home in the 600 block of Timberlane.

SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Dec. 1 Tyler Brown, 23, of DeKalb, was arrested at 7:57 p.m. for driving while license suspended and on an active DeKalb County warrant following a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and South Woodlawn Road.

Brown also was cited for illegal window tint.

A passenger, Kelsey Boddy, 24, of Sycamore, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (crack/ cocaine). Brown and Boddy were transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 2 Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the parking lot of the U.S. Post Office in Creston at 11:41 a.m. After an investigation, deputies learned that Laurie Bagg, 60, of Creston, had accidentally struck the building with her 2020 GMC Pickup while attempting to park.

Bagg was ejected from the vehicle, having already opened the driver’s side door while trying to park, but was uninjured.

Rochelle EMS personnel responded to the scene and Bagg signed a medical

Travon K. Ward, 34, of Galesburg, was arrested at 8:13 p.m. for driving while license suspended in the 9000 block of Freeport Road. Ward was released on-scene and will appear in court at a later date.

Alioht Cartton-Hobart/Rojas, 39, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was arrested at 8:20 p.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop on Illinois Route 64 near the intersection with Interstate 39. Cartton-Hobart/Rojas was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 3 Diego Bolanos-Hernandez, 20, of Rockford, was arrested at 12:08 a.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 17000 block of Illinois Route 64.

Bolanos-Hernandez also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper display of front registration and an additional equipment violation.

Bolanos-Hernandez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 4

Skylar Luric, 30, of Rockford, was arrested at 3:55 p.m. for driving while license revoked after deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash in the 10000 block of Illinois Route 2. Luric was released on scene with an I-Bond and given a return court date.

Dec. 6 Andrew Beitia, 19, of Tinley Park, was arrested for driving on a suspended license after being stopped by deputies on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64 for speeding, 118 mph. Beitia was released on an I-Bond and given a return court date.

Deputies and Rochelle and Flagg Center fire departments responded to a rollover crash on Illinois Route 38 and Fisher Road at 2:35 a.m.

An investigation revealed that a Ford truck driven by Emanuel Escatel, 31, of Rochelle, was traveling west on Route 38 when the vehicle left the north side of the roadway and struck a culvert.

The truck then overturned and struck a utility pole. Rochelle Fire Department ambulance transported Escatel to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford where he was listed in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office.

171 citations issued during special enforcement The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office issued 171 citations including three impaired driving arrests and 12 arrests for unlicensed, suspended or revoked drivers during the recent Thanksgiving enforcement effort.

Deputies also took the following enforcement actions: three felony drug arrests; two felony suspended/revoked license arrests; 20 citations to uninsured motorists; 83 speeding citations; five misdemeanor drug arrests; 10 citations for registration violations; and one seat belt violation citation.

“Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this effort to save lives by getting impaired drivers off the roads and more people buckled up. The enforcement campaign took place from Nov. 19 through Nov 29,” said Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle on the department’s website. “During the mobilization, extra emphasis was placed on enforcement during late-night hours, when statistics show the most unbuckled and impaired driving fatalities occur. The Thanksgiving enforcement effort was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.”
