Polo Lions Club member Polo Lions Club members held their Christmas dinner on Dec. 2 at the Polo Fire Station during Polo’s Christmas Festival.

The dinner included ham, baked potato, green beans, macaroni salad, roll and a cookie for dessert. The people who stayed at the fire station to eat had good conversations and laughter was heard.

Thank you to the community for supporting the Polo Lions by donating toward the meal. It is greatly appreciated.

Christmas Sing-Along is Dec. 17

Pine Creek Christian Church members invite everyone to join them in a Christmas Sing-Along at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at 8061 W. Penn Corner Road, Polo.

Mary Mead-Cantrell will be the pianist.

“It will be wonderful to put all our voices together to celebrate the Christmas season,” said Sheryl Hopkins, a church member. “Come join us for music and singing, followed by fellowship and refreshments.”

Christmas Star Project continues

The Christmas Star Project, created to help families in the Polo school district provide

their children (ages infant through high school) with gifts during the holiday season, continues at two Polo locations.

One Christmas tree is in the lobby of the First State Bank Shannon-Polo and another is at the Polo Senior Center.

The trees will be filled with “Star” tags of children. Each tag will have a child’s age, size and wish list on the back of the tag. There is a recommended $40 limit per child for clothing, toys, books or nonelectronic games.

Bring the gifts wrapped with the children’s tags tied to them to the bank by Monday, Dec. 11.

Anyone wishing to donate to the project but unable to shop can call Pine Creek Christian Church at 815-946-3949.

By KAREN MERLAK The hours of daylight are dwindling each day, but the nights are lit up with beautiful Christmas lights and the love of friends and neighbors. Time seems to speed up as our month fills up with holiday activities. Let us remember the love and thank God for His special gift.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Marge Hammes. We welcomed Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout back after the holiday. She shared her message of hope for the first Sunday in Advent.

For the first Sunday in Advent, I had the honor of joining my good friend Brian Toms for the lighting of the candle. We were blessed to have Jean Frey recording our hymns for our service.

On Saturday morning, I met my friend Amy Sikyta for a visit to a craft show in Dixon. It was a quick trip, but a very enjoyable visit. I love seeing so many talented people sharing their crafts.

In the late afternoon, I joined Pastor Suzanne, Sandra Ford and Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins for an evening of crafts for the local children. We were part of Polo’s Christmas Festival. It was great to see so many children making ornaments with their families.

Don and Vicki Hay have just returned from a trip to Michigan to see their granddaughter Sydney Stephens. Sydney is attending the University of Michi-

gan in Ann Arbor. The Hays picked up their daughter and granddaughter, Christine and Avery Stephens, for the trip.

On Saturday evening, the family attended Sydney’s concert. Sydney belongs to an a cappella group called the Harmonettes. After the concert, Avery enjoyed some extra time with her sister.

On Sunday morning, the Hay and Stephen families were together for a special breakfast to celebrate Don’s birthday.

Everyone had a wonderful time together including a great visit in the car ride there and back.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, Sandra Ford traveled to Wheaton to spend time with her daughter, Kim Austin, her husband, Ron, and their children.

The celebration continued into the weekend when Sandra’s daughter, Crystal Patterson, her husband, Jack, and their family joined everyone in Wheaton. The families had a wonderful visit and made many memories.

We hope you will join our church in celebrating the Christmas holiday with two special events. At 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, we will have our annual community singalong caroling event.

Mary Mead-Cantrell, our pianist, will lead us in singing our favorite Christmas songs. Come and join us for the music and stay for the fellowship and refreshments afterward.

We also will be hosting a Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. Dec. 24. We will

have a special service of candlelight and carols to celebrate the birth of our Savior. All are welcome to join in the evening’s service.

This past week, we lost a very dear friend of our Pine Creek family. Hilda Smith, wife of our former Pastor Jack Smith, passed away at the end of November. I have special memories of Hilda at the craft cabin at 4-H camp and Jack leading the archery classes. Hilda was loved and will be missed by many.

This life is filled with so many blessings if we are careful to look for them.

Pastor Suzanne spoke of the excellent care her mother was given in her final moments. Our gathering on Saturday night was filled with the joy of children.

In between, our small group of friends shared lots of laughter.

There were many family gatherings to celebrate the holiday and to celebrate one another. Everyone who knew Hilda was blessed by her love and wisdom.

God’s love is with us in all things, celebrations and loss. His daily care is a blessing for each of us.

I hope to see you next Sunday morning when we gather for the second Sunday of Advent. You and your family are always welcome to join us for a time of prayer, worship and singing. Come and visit our little church in the country.

OREGON – Ogle County law enforcement is searching for a former Chana man and Illinois Department of Corrections parolee who is accused of taking part in a stabbing in Rochelle in early October.

A warrant was issued nationwide for Bailey J. Gildea, 29, of Rochelle, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office posted Thursday. Gildea is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, mob action, aggravated fleeing to elude and resisting arrest.

According to Ogle County Court records, Gildea and co-defendant Jesse J. Mohica, 23, of Rochelle, attacked a man Oct. 7 in Rochelle. Mohica is accused of stabbing the man. Gildea is

being charged as an accomplice, and both are accused of punching the man.

Mohica, who was arrested Nov. 27 and is being held in the Ogle County jail, also is charged with aggravated Bailey J. Gildea battery with a deadly weapon and mob action. He has a pretrial hearing Dec. 13.

The battery charge is punishable by two to five years in prison and mob action by one to three years.

Gildea has a felony criminal history in the county dating to 2016, when he was indicted on a drug-dealing charge, court records show.

On June 23, 2017, he was sentenced

to six years for dealing cocaine and sent to boot camp. Another count of dealing cocaine was dismissed.

On July 15, 2022, and July 27, 2022, Jesse J. Mohica Gildea was involved in the beating of two men, one of whom he punched, causing a concussion, court records show.

On Dec. 19, 2022, he was sentenced in those two cases and one other case to a year and a half in prison, terms to run concurrently, for two counts of mob action, aggravated battery and criminal damage to government property. Possession of a controlled sub-

stance and two counts of aggravated battery were dismissed per his plea agreement.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, he was paroled from Centralia Correctional Center on June 1 and now is considered an absconder.

Gildea is 5 feet, 10 inches tall with auburn hair and blue eyes with “Carmyn” tattooed on his right lower arm, “Adalynn” on his left lower arm and an eye inside a triangle on this left hand.

Callers can remain anonymous and information leading to Gildea’s arrest may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Judge denies Rockford man’s request for release on 17 charges

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – An Ogle County judge denied a Rockford man’s request Nov. 30 to remain free as he faces 17 charges, including narcotics racketeering, delivery of methamphetamine, methamphetamine conspiracy, armed violence and possessing a firearm as a felon.

Delano Albert, 34, was indicted in June by a statewide grand jury on the charges for what prosecutors said happened in January, February, March, April and May in Winnebago Delano Albert and Ogle counties.

He also is charged with being an “armed habitual criminal” in the 17-page indictment filed by the Illinois Attorney General.

Albert has been held in the Ogle County Correctional Center since his arrest Oct. 1. On Nov. 30, he appeared in court for a detention hearing in a wheelchair and wearing handcuffs, repre-

sented by his attorney, Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien.

Assistant Attorney General Gregg Gansmann, the special prosecutor for the case, argued Albert should not be released because he is a “real and present danger” to others and the community. He also argued that Albert would be a flight risk if released.

Gansmann told Judge John Redington that Albert made “numerous” deliveries of methamphetamine and cocaine to undercover officers or police informants. He said one of the deliveries was in Ogle County. Some of the indictments say he possessed between 100 and 400 grams of methamphetamine and between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine.

One of the indictments accuses Albert of being an armed habitual criminal, stating he possessed a handgun after being convicted of possessing more than one gram, but less than 15 grams, of cocaine in 2008 in Winnebago County.

Gansmann said when police searched Albert’s residence in Rockford on May 16 he had a handgun.

“Officers observed the defendant with a gun in his hand that he was toss-

ing into a pile of clothes near his bed,” Gansmann said. “It was a loaded Magnum Research Eagle pistol.”

Gansmann said officers also discovered two other loaded handguns – each with a bullet in their chambers – while searching his home.

“The defendant is a convicted felon and has two priors for armed violence,” Gansmann said. “He had a loaded weapon in his bed while police were serving him.”

Gansmann said Albert left the Rockford area after the search was conducted and was found in Minnesota.

O’Brien argued Albert should be released because of his “ongoing health issues that affect his overall mood.”

O’Brien also told the court that Albert was in Minnesota visiting family and had not tried to “flee” any potential charges and noted there was not an outstanding warrant issued for him. He said Albert had fulfilled conditional discharge terms on another prior arrest and had appeared in court during proceedings for that charge.

“He does have a residence in Rockford and there are other means other than detention as far as monitoring that

would ensure he remains where he is supposed to be,” O’Brien said, referring to electronic monitoring devices. “And my client does remain innocent until proven guilty.

“Even though there are concerns he does have physical issues and continued detention is not proper,” O’Brien argued.

Gansmann disagreed.

“He obviously knew police were looking for him and he fled the area,” Gansmann said.

Redington denied the motion for pretrial release, ruling prosecutors had met the criteria for holding Albert.

“He poses a real and present threat to persons or the community,” Redington said. “And he is a high flight risk.”

Redington set Albert’s next court date for 1 p.m. Dec. 14.

Albert then spoke directly to Redington.

“I ask that I be treated fairly and not get lynched,” said Albert, who is Black.

“He [Gansmann] didn’t really prove anything. This isn’t the 1950s or 1960s. I shouldn’t even be here.”

“I will always rule in a way that is supported by the law,” Redington said.

The first snow of the season that amounted to anything came and went.

It kept me in the house and I am tired of watching old movies.

In the 1950s we were busy raising children and we did not go to the movie theater. Now I am seeing what I missed. The other day it was Bing Crosby in “Going My Way.” I knew about the movie but never saw it until now. So I am catching up and I love the old movies of the 1930s and the 1940s.

I also am missing the museum and hoping the rain we now are having will not turn to ice. Dec. 6 will be the Polo Historical Society Christmas potluck at the museum at 6 p.m. Bring a dish to pass and your own table service.

Linda Gall as usual has sent me some interesting pictures and information from around 1911. I had not seen these before. One is downtown Polo and the photographer was Chase.

The other says “Polo Old Town.” The old building is advertising the Chautauqua of Aug. 8-13 in 1911.

Chautauqua time in Polo was big entertainment and went on for several days in tents. The tickets were $1, with children from 10 to 15 years old being charged 50 cents. You also had season ticket holders and they could loan their tickets to someone else.

The programs involved music to orators with a message. Some seemed to be a bit like a sideshow in a circus.

For example, in 1911 they had the Lillipution Sisters, Sarah and Lucy Adams. They were only 46 to 49 inches tall and at one time they had been part of the Mrs. Tom Thumb program.

These were little people and it did not say what they did.

Play” that always was well-received.

There were singing groups, orchestras, soloists, lectures and people who portrayed someone.

It was all sorts of talent and attractions that were in constant demand all over the country. E.W. Mills, who was a famous orator, was in demand all over America. He was part of the 1911 Chautauqua in Polo.

The Otterbeins were a male quar-

tet and the Maurer Ladies Orchestra must have been great. Norman J. Spencer was a “New England Shakespeare specialist.”

Polo had top-notch performers and boasted it to be “the greatest event of the year.”

Polo Christmas Festival celebrates fifth year

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO – This year’s Polo Christmas Festival turned out great with the firstever Parade of Lights garnering good reviews, organizers said.

“It was another great year,” said D.J. Sanders, Polo Christmas Festival Committee president. “The parade was better than we anticipated. We anticipated only a couple (participants) and we had over a dozen sign up.”

Organizers hope to continue growing the parade over the years, he said.

The fifth annual Polo Christmas

Festival took place in and around downtown Polo on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The day kicked off with a Reindeer Run hosted by the Polo Public Library and doughnuts with Santa at Crossroads Community Church. From noon to 3 p.m., Centennial Elementary School hosted a craft and vendor show and three historical trolley tours took riders to old town Polo. Crossroads Community Church hosted its Winter Carnival.

“The winter carnival looked like a huge success,” Sanders said. “I haven’t heard any final numbers or what they got, but while I was there, the place was packed.”

The Cargill Horse and Wagon Rides took off from the library’s pavilion.

Businesses throughout the city offered treats and activities.

“Every business I stopped into, everyone had the same answer: ‘We’ve had so many people in here today,’ ” Sanders said. “A lot of people were able to go into businesses they’ve never been in before, which is kind of one of our goals with this as well.”

The Parade of Lights began at the Polo Rehab & Health Care Center and ended at Paul’s Park where Santa and Mrs. Claus lit up the community Christmas tree and met with children to hear

their wish lists.

Sanders said he got a lot of good reviews about the parade, but also some notes about how spread out it was.

The plan is to have a pacer vehicle next year to “keep everything tight and organized,” he said.

Overall, the activities were well-attended, Sanders said.

“I know a lot of people just liked how many activities there were,” he said.

“People really liked that everything was so centered around the children. I know some of the newer businesses in town appreciated being involved and we appreciated having them.”

Ogle County has been issued a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to David Harris, director of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier,” is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law. This equalization is particularly important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (for example, school districts, junior college districts, fire protection districts). If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with

comparable properties would result.

State law requires property in Illinois to be assessed at one-third of its market value. Farm property is assessed differently, with farm homesites and dwellings subject to regular assessing and equalization procedures but with farmland and farm buildings assessed according to standards based on productivity.

The equalization factor is determined annually for each county by comparing the sales price of individual properties sold over the past three years to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments/county assessor.

If this three-year average level of assessment is one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be one. If the average level of assessment is greater than one-third of market

value, the equalization factor will be less than one. And if the average level of assessment is less than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be greater than one.

Assessments in Ogle County are at 33.02% of market value, based on sales of properties in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

The equalization factor being assigned is for 2023 taxes, payable in 2024.

Last year’s equalization factor for the county was 1.0000.

The tentative factor is subject to change if the County Board of Review takes actions that significantly affect the county assessments or if local officials or others can present data showing the Department of Revenue’s estimates of the average level of assessments in the county should be adjusted. A public hearing on the ten-

tative multiplier will be held between 20 and 30 days after the tentative factor is published in a newspaper of general circulation within the county.

A change in the equalization factor does not mean total property tax bills will increase or decrease. Tax bills are determined by local taxing bodies when they request money each year to provide services to local citizens. If the amount requested by local taxing districts is not greater than the amount received in the previous year, then total property taxes will not increase even if assessments may have increased.

The assessed value of an individual property determines what portion of the tax burden a specific taxpayer will assume. That individual’s portion of tax responsibility is not changed by the multiplier.

Snow ushers in Forreston’s Christmas in the Country

ehinton@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – Snow showers may have put a bit of a damper on a couple of events at Forreston’s Christmas in the Country on Dec. 1, but two main characters certainly didn’t mind the weather.

Santa and Mrs. Claus cruised to Memorial Park via a Forreston fire truck and were met by two dozen kids eager to share what they wanted for Christmas.

First, Santa had to make sure the large Christmas tree in the park was lit.

“Let’s light this tree,” he said. “Ready, 1, 2, 3 ...” and with that, the tree was lit and Santa and his wife moved to the park’s shelter to sit by the fire and visit with the kids, some of them with their lists in tow.

Six-year-old Fae Zettle of Forreston told Santa she wanted a Kittycorn – a kitten that resembles a unicorn. Fae then made sure Santa got the message by dropping her list into his official mailbox, situ-

ated between the two chairs in the shelter.

Emmerson Thiel, 7, of Forreston knew what she was going to ask for before Santa arrived.

“I want a phone and a laptop,” she said while making s’mores before Santa’s arrival.

Her friend, Emily Roop, 7, of Forreston was not as exact.

“Kentucky Fried Chicken,” she said.

When she actually met Santa, she changed her request to a hoverboard.

A visit with Santa was one of several events Dec. 1. A community fundraising dinner for Sauerkraut Days, shopping, hay rides and a s’mores bar were among the evening events.

The lighted Christmas parade and scavenger hunt were canceled because of the weather.

David Bergeson, 41, of Polo, was arrested for driving while license suspended and an outstanding Lee County warrant after a traffic stop near the intersection of Milledgeville and Wilson Mill roads about 11:43 p.m. He also was cited for suspended registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Bergeson was taken to the Ogle County jail, released on a notice to appear on all Ogle County charges but held in lieu of bond on the Lee County warrant.

Daniel Gonzalez-Castillo, 42, of Mexico, was arrested for no driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 103 south about 9:46 p.m. Gonzalez-Castillo was released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

Lent, 30, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a car in the ditch in the 7000 block of east Illinois Route 38 about 3:01 p.m. Lent also was cited for improper lane use and failure to reduce speed/too fast for conditions. Lent was taken to the Ogle County jail and released with a notice to appear.

El Louise had the gift of writing long newsy letters in her perfect penmanship. Everyone loved to receive them and treasured them. She also loved to send Hallmark cards for every occasion. She was a very kind and giving person, and whenever she saw a need, she would try her best to meet it. Whether it be someone needing food, clothing, or an encouraging note. She never worried about getting praise or recognition. She was just happy to see a need met. Her first job off the farm was working for Kable News in Mt. Morris IL. When she moved to Rockford, she worked in personnel at Camcar. She left that position to take care of her mother full time who was sick with cancer, and later cared for several other family members. She loved planting flowers, especially tulip and daffodil bulbs from Holland. She saw a lot of the United States on vacations, and in later years traveled to Europe. A celebration of life service will be held at 4pm Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Maywood Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Gary Kniesley officiating.

Time to tie up sports related loose ends The transition from fall to winter sports is underway and there is much to learn before making assessments on basketball and wrestling teams. Meanwhile, let’s tie up some loose ends.

Spending Thanksgiving with an assorted bunch that included a retired Stillman Valley educator, a 1987 Leaf River grad, a 1957 Byron grad and athletic Hall of Famer and a retired Rockford engineer, much of the dinnertime conversation settled around high school sports.

Actually, Thanksgiving all over the country is often geared toward sports with the televised pro football games being the centerpiece.

Growing up in a football environment, I appreciated that. However, the older I get, the more I realize that way too much emphasis is put on football – to the point of it being our national religion.

Guilty as charged as I found myself in a football-induced coma from watching high school and college games nonstop on Friday and Saturday. It almost was like being on a drunken bender.

I needed a break from my channel changer and took respite at the Blackhawk Center, checking out some bad tournament basketball. This early in the year, basketball always is bad.

Getting back to my Thanksgiving social intercourse, I learned that the mighty Byron football program transitioned from 6-man and 8-man football in the late 1950s.

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert Regarding Leaf River, which closed its doors in 1989, I found out it has quite a history of musical greatness.

Under the direction of Sid Anderson, Leaf River was IHSA Class D music state champs two years straight in the mid 1970s.

Additionally, the Demons, as they used to be called, had a state champion in the mile in 1959 with Steve Newcomer and that was in a one-class system. While verifying this on the IHSA website, I also noticed Mt. Morris had a state mile champ in 1932 with Pete Longman.

Interestingly, Longman’s time of 4:25 was a second faster than the 4:26 run by Newcomer. To date, the bestever performances in a one-class system for Ogle County distance running are third and second in the 2-mile run

by Craig Young of Stillman Valley in 1973 and ’74.

Speaking of people with the surname of Young, Larry Young drew a packed house to the Oregon Depot a couple of weeks ago as he spoke of his experiences umpiring baseball. Larry is a true testament to persistence and diligence to a desired profession, one that the odds are severely stacked against a person.

My favorite story was the one he told of getting into what appears to be a heated argument with manager Gene Lamont in MLB game stoppage, but in reality it was a discussion between the two friends about going out for dinner after the game.

For us old-timers, Kirkland’s Gene Lamont is a story in itself, one of the great athletes to hail from northern Illinois. When you think about Kirkland, all you have is Lamont.

Sure, Polo’s Terry Jenkins had a couple of state playoff appearances in football and a basketball regional title as a coach in the mid 1980s. But Kirkland has never been able to muster anything substantial other than being the home of Lamont.

In the past week, I had two area wrestling coaches lament to me about the difficulty of the 1A sectional and the unfairness of really good kids missing out on trips downstate while those from lesser sectionals make it.

You can’t argue that claim. However, in all sports other than football, the IHSA arranges the postseason geographically, even using a computerized method for accuracy.

It’s just the way it is and the IHSA will never get into the business of ranking teams and gerrymandering assignments. It always has been about geography and always will be.

However, there was a variable to this in basketball for several decades.

The Chicago Public League, which is

as good in basketball as it is bad in football, always received an automatic bid to the state tourney.

Not anymore. With the incorporation of four classes in basketball, the Chicago Public League now is geographically funneled into regionals/ sectionals with suburban schools.

One of my basketball travel plans is to make a trip to Scales Mound to see the state’s top small-school attraction on their home gym. Had planned to go last year, but Scales Mound is so far off the beaten path and as you get older, it is easy to talk yourself out of long winter drives.

I did make it to the farthest point northwest in Illinois a few years ago to see Polo play in a sectional at East Dubuque, so a precedent has been set.

One final travel note, on my way to Peoria to cover the state cross country meet last month, I made a slight detour north of Princeton to visit one of the few remaining covered bridges in Illinois. I’m glad I did as a week later a truck driver got lost and plowed his 18-wheeler into it.

Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and 160 years old, it may have to be demolished because of the damage caused by the truck.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ROUNDUP Bowling Hawks win at Dixon: Oregon hosted

the annual Hawk Invitational at Plum Hollow Family Center, Dixon, on Dec. 2 and the boys came away with a firstplace team finish with a 5756, 6-game total, 63 pins ahead of second place Dixon. The Hawks were led by second-place individual finisher Gavvin Surmo with a 1262 series, followed closely by third-place individual finisher Brady Davis with a 1241 series and seventh-place individual finisher Matthew Stahl with an 1162 series.

The Hawks ended the game with an 18-7 fourth-quarter run.

Noah Johnson finished with 14 points and Cooper Johnson, Jameson Caposey, Salsbury and Campos scored nine points each. Benny Olalde and Lewis added eight points apiece for the Hawks.

Rueff scored 13 points and Aaron Lester and Lehman chipped in 12 points each for the Raiders.

“That second quarter, I think we gave up eight points. It could’ve been six points if they didn’t make that last-second shot,” AFC coach Mike Messer said.

“We worked hard. We knew they were going to put a half-court press on us. We just threw the ball away to begin with. A lot of turnovers. A lot of missed shots.

To be honest with you, I think we should’ve been ahead at halftime if we make some of our bunnies, but we weren’t, so 10 points down at halftime.

“The adrenaline starts pumping when the other team has turnovers and the next thing you know, that’s when the daggers come out when we’re making two or three turnovers and not getting shots. And that’s what killed us. We need to clean it up and we’re a young team.”

The Hawks built a 13-point first-quarter lead, using the fast break early and often. Keeping their foot on the pedal in the second half, they rolled to a 74-45 nonconference victory.

Oregon started the game on an 8-0 run in the first 1:49, using two fast break layups by Cooper Johnson and one by Keaton Salsbury to build the early advantage.

The Hawks grabbed 10 steals in the first half and capitalized consistently with easy layups and free throws at the other end. That put the Raiders behind the eight ball from the beginning.

“That gave us great momentum because they fouled a lot on the fast breaks and we finished our layups,” Salsbury said about the steals and frequent fast break scoring opportunities.

AFC’s Nolan Rueff hit a 3-pointer to get to within 15-9 with 1:19 to go, but the Hawks scored seven straight points to finish the first quarter.

Nole Campos ignited the run by making the first of two free throws. Avery Lewis converted a three-point play after a putback with under a minute to go and then followed with a left-corner 3 with 27 seconds left, stretching the lead to 22-9.

“We weren’t getting a lot of rebounds, so that kind of heated us up a little bit,” Oregon’s Noah Johnson said. “Coach got us fired up in the locker room, so we came out and tried our best and got the ‘W.’ ” The Hawks kept the pressure on early in the second quarter, expanding their lead to 28-11 after a Kade Girton putback and a Campos left-wing 3 at the 3:26 mark.

The Raiders’ Noah Danielson got to the hoop for a layup around the three-minute mark and Aaron Lester drilled a left-corner 3 to draw to within 28-16. Rueff and Danielson followed with back-to-back putbacks to cut it to 28-20 before Girton banked in a buzzer-beater just inside the free-throw line.

Oregon led 30-20 at halftime.

Noah Johnson opened the second half with a left-wing 3, but AFC had answers early. Brock Lehman countered with a layup and Rueff got a putback to fall to make it a 33-24 game with 7:05 to play in the third.

After that, it was all Oregon.

Noah Johnson hit two more 3s over the next 4:19 to push the lead to 51-34.

Lewis scored a fast break layup for a 20-point lead with 1:14 to go before Danielson hit a short-range jumper to pull to within 56-38 just before the end of the third quarter.

Oregon Hawks, Polo Marcos compete in dual meet

Shaw Local News Network correspondent Oregon wrestlers traveled to Polo on Nov. 30 for dual meets against the Marcos and the Fulton Steamers.

The Hawks notched two wins.

Oregon jumped out to an early lead against the Steamers, winning the first six matches, five by pins.

Fulton took a forfeit and added a couple of pins in the second half of the meet, but the Hawks kept pace and easily won 45-21.

Polo didn’t go down easily. Oregon got an early 18-0 lead with forfeits in the first three matches, but the Marcos were strong in the middle weights and put up 29 unanswered points before the Hawks closed with four straight pins and a forfeit to prevail 48-29.

Pinning for Oregon against Fulton were Seth Rote with a hip toss at 1:11, Landon Ege with a half nelson at 1:13, Nelson Benesh with a cradle in 52 seconds and Colton Flaharty with a come-from-behind counter to the

Jackson Glendenning dug out an arm to score a pin with the half nelson at 1:13. The meet ended when Zander VandeSand fell to his back trying to fight a takedown and was pinned at 1:03.

Against Polo, Miles Olsen was turned with a half nelson in 32 seconds. Leyton Kenney never got going in a 10-2 major decision loss. Jakob Moser nearly had a pin with a cradle in a 9-0 major decision win.

Maxx George, Benesh and Anna Marquardt took forfeits for Oregon and then the Marcos got tough. At

LaBay lost four sets of backpoints in a 15-0 technical fall loss at 5:28.

Berry was pulled back in a half nelson at 5:10. Watts lost a rolling reverse into a cradle at 2:45 and Oregon was down 29-18.

Phineas Mullen led 8-1 when he pulled back in a half nelson and pinned at 5:10. Draven Zier had a takedown to the back in the first period, tilted for two points in the second and rolled for a reverse into a cradle at 2:45. Oregon trailed 29-18.

Mowry turned things around at 160 with a half nelson at 5:55. That left the Hawks down by five and they took the lead on a 3/4 nelson by Bauer at 2:20. Glendenning made quick work in the 175-pound match, swimming with a half nelson to pin

in 34 seconds. VandeSand scored a reverse to the back at 1:10 and the meet closed with a forfeit to Rote at 215 to complete the comeback.

Colton Saldecki was pinned in a swimming half nelson in 34 seconds.

Keagan Bonnell scored a reversal but lost a reverse to his back and was pinned at 1:10.

On the JV mat for Oregon against Fulton, Olsen caught a half nelson at 3:35. Moser took a 9-4 loss. Jack Tinsman was pinned in a butcher at 5:08.

Dawson Alcala pinned with a half nelson at 1:26. George missed a hold and went to his back in a half nelson at 2:42.

Against Polo, Olsen was turned with a half nelson in 32 seconds. Kenney never got going in a 10-2 major decision loss. Moser almost had a pin with cradle in a 9-0 major decision win.

On the JV mat for Polo, Kaiden Vallejo caught a half nelson in 32 seconds. Kaleb LaRue rolled to a 10-2 major decision. Ivan Reyna lost a late takedown to lose 9-0.
