Police urge safey when trick-or-treating

Polo’s trick-or-treat hours are from 4 -7 p.m.Sunday, Oct. 31 Polo Police Chief Troy Randall reminds residents to turn on their porch lights for the children.

He also offered these safety reminders.

• Young children should always

go trick-or-treating with an adult.

• Never trick-or-treat alone. Be cautious of strangers.

• Wear costumes with reflective markings and bright colors.

her husband, Dave, and their daughter, Hanna. Hanna, now a fourth-grader, was on a break from school.

For the first week of their trip, the Hopkins family traveled to Northern Arizona to visit Bearizona, an animal sanctuary.

On their way through the park, they saw bears, wolves, bison, donkeys, reindeer, and elk. The park is home to animals who were orphaned or have been in trouble.

After the wildlife park, they drove up to Flagstaff for a stay at a bed and breakfast.

The home was older, but comfortable.

Without a television, there was more time for reading and playing games. James and Nancy enjoyed shopping and many great meals with their family.

This evening, I went over to visit with my brother, Ben Bittinger, and his wife, Jo. Jo’s mom, Pat Garrison, had the same idea.

It was good to visit with everyone and catch up on their family.

On Saturday, I attended the Forreston football game to see the elementary students who participated in the cheerleading camp perform. It was great to see so many children cheering and having a great time.

My yard needed to be mowed again after

several weeks. Now, the grass is greener than it has been all summer. Just as we expected the mowing season to end, it seems it is starting up again. The grass finally got what it had been thirsting for, several inches of rain.

Too often we find ourselves in the same situation. We need something that has been missing. Maybe we need rest from a busy week or a friend to talk to after a bad day. We can end up feeling drained until that need is fulfilled.

Thankfully, God knows our needs. He is here to make sure those needs are filled.

He truly knows every part of us.

When we find the thing we need, we can grow once again. Just like the yard was revived when it finally had the rain, we can be revived, too.

My hope continues to be that we will fill our churches with those who are thirsty for His word. Come and learn about the God that loves and cares for you. Our family welcomes you and yours in our little church in the country.

By KAREN MERLAK The chill in the air has been delayed this fall season. While the warm weather is welcomed, I am missing the changing colors of the leaves. We know that everything comes in God’s time. His timing is perfect. Today belongs to Him and we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout continued her sermon series in Community. Chuck Kearns sang a medley of hymns for special music. He was accompanied by his wife, Beverly, our talented pianist.

Pastor Suzanne shared a special message with Amelia, daughter of Katie and Cliff Pfundstein. After church, we gathered for our regular business meeting. We are in an exciting time of change once again.

After church, I had the honor of taking home my good friend, Jean Cunningham. I really appreciate our time in the car, chatting and catching up on recent events. I feel truly blessed to have such wonderful friends.

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — The COVID-19 pandemic rates seem to be stabilizing in Ogle County, Health Department Administrator Kyle Auman told board members Tuesday.

However, the county still is listed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as high transmission, he said.

Ogle County’s positivity rate is 4.18% and the case rate per 100,000 is 187.59, Auman said.

“Positivity percentage, this is the first time in a while we’ve been below 5%, and then our case rate is below 200 per 100,000, which are really two good indicators,” he said.

Auman said 49.53% of the population is vaccinated. Fifteen cases of COVID-19 came in on Monday and 11 on Tuesday.

“Those are some of the lowest numbers we’ve had in quite some time, so that is encouraging news,” Auman said. “We still have 117 active and open cases with 237 open close contact associated to those cases. Since Aug. 15, 2020, the health department has investigated 7542 cases of close contacts.”

There’s been a lot of confusion related to

what vaccines are approved to administer a third dose or booster shot, as well as who should receive such a shot, Auman said.

“If you read many reports, it seems like all vaccinations are recomKyle Auman mending a boosters and have been approved for boosters, and that is not true currently,” he said.

A third dose of the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for immunocompromised individuals, Auman said. It also is approve for anyone who is 65 or older that could have a health condition that could warrant receiving a booster; anyone who’s 18 or older who lives in a long-term care or congregate-type setting; anyone or 18 or older with an underlying medical condition; and anyone 18 or older that lives or works in a high-risk setting.

Recommendations related to booster shots for those who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines should be coming later this week or next week, Auman said.

Rules of the Road Review Course to be offered at Polo Senior Center on Wednesday, Oct. 27 Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Polo Senior Center, is offering a Rules of the Road Review Course for all citizens in the Polo area on Wednesday, Oct 27 at 1 p.m.

The course is free to anyone who wishes to attend. The purpose of the course is to help participants pass the Illinois drivers license renewal examination and prepares applicants for the general written and road examination. Information on the vision screening will also be provided.

Casey’s planning to open in Forreston on Oct. 21

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON — Casey’s General Store is set to open in Forreston on Oct. 21, village officials say.

“They are ready to rock-and-roll,” Village President Mark Metzger said of Casey’s. “I believe their store hours are like 4 a.m. till 11 p.m.”

Based in Ankey, Iowa, Casey’s is one of the leading convenience store chains in the U.S. Casey’s closed on the purchase of the former The Depot building and Mobil gas station at 314 East Main St. in January. The Depot remained open until the purchase was finalized, but Caseys’ didn’t reopen the property right away.

Metzger said the delay was because of another acquisition the company made around the same time.

Casey’s purchased Buchanan Energy, owner of Bucky’s Convenience Stores, for $580 million in November 2020. The deal included 94 retail stores and 79 dealer locations.

The company has done a great job establishing itself in smaller communities, Metzger said. Casey’s has become a go-to for gas and food because of their widespread footprint, he said.

“I think the buzz is they [the community] are pretty excited out it,” Metzger said. “It’s a new business, which I think brings its own kind of excitement to the community.”

The Village of Progress Foundation will offer two scholarships in 2021.

The first scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is made possible through a joint effort between The Larry Young & Friends Charities and The Village of Progress Foundation. Larry Young & Friends Charities partner with The Village of Progress Foundation every year to help make our annual golf outing a success. Barber Park was the place for special Polo events L

inda and I met at the museum to go through a big box of Barber Family history. She had already been working on Barber Park history and we decided to tackle a big box relating to the Barber family.

Would there be anything in it about Barber Park?

When we had met some weeks before with Michal of Ogle County Historical Society, Michal was interested in Barber Park. I had already pulled out a folder I had in the museum files on the subject and Linda had started to do a search on the Internet through the old newspapers.

It is wonderful to have all the old newspapers on microfilm and someone talented like Linda on the computer can find just what we are looking for at the moment. Then I added what I had found in J. W. Clinton’s scrapbook and we soon had a very good idea of how the people of Polo celebrated.

Chanceford Barber and his sons Henry and Bryant owned Barber Park on Eagle Point Road where the old Edgewood Golf Course eventually was built.

Chanceford had started out in Buffalo Grove in 1843 as a merchant. In 1855 he moved to Polo and in 1856 built his home on the corner where Ed Raley’s home now stands. Mr. Barber owned all the land in that area and Barber’s Park was along Eagle

J. W. Clinton wrote about the first celebration at Barber’s Park with over a thousand old settlers. I do not know the date but Sterling Gazette wrote about the fourth annual meeting held August 31, 1861.

Many events went on at the park including band concerts, boxing, baseball games, parachute jumps, camp fires, a target shoot for turkeys, and races on the race track for horses. The big barn that had been moved to Barber’s Park later burned. It had been quite a barn at a cost of $4,000.

They had an excursion train from Chicago which cost $2 round trip.

They would arrive at Polo at noon and depart at 7:30 in the evening. 200 to 400 would arrive from Chicago to take in the festivities. There would be other out of town guests also.

Sometimes the Odd Fellows Hall would entertain a large group of visitors and food was usually free with Polo women fixing large baskets of food to be taken to Barber’s Park.

There would be parades, bands, and children’s parades with the little ones dressed in white pushing decorated doll buggies. Bicycles and tri-cy-

We now have a notebook full of celebrations and we did not find anything in the Barber family box on Barber Park.

It just seemed to be full of Barber family genealogy. I assume someday

somebody from the Barber family will come looking for all of their history and the box will be waiting for them.

I need to mark it in large black letters. Linda had fun reading through all of their history before they came to Polo.

Trunk N’ Treat will begin at 4 p.m. and run until there are no more Trick or Treaters.

The cost is $55 for adults and $49 for accompanied children ages 2 to 17, plus dinner. The approximate schedule is noon to 10:30 p.m.

Participation is limited to 30 people so there is room on the 56-seat bus to social distance. Vaccination of all participants is encouraged so everyone will be comfortable.

NEWS BRIEFS Leaf River Lions to offer Halloween costume contest and Trunk N’ Treat

The Leaf River Lion’s Club is offering a Halloween Costume Contest and Trunk N’ Treat in Leaf River on Sunday, Oct. 31 from 4-7 p.m.

The afternoon will begin with the Leaf River Lion’s sponsored Costume Contest at 3:30 p.m., which will be held at the Bertolet Memorial Building. Weather permitting the contest will be outside.

Classes for judging are: 0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5 years and Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades; Middle School, High School and Adult.

First place in each division will receive $5, second place will receive $3, and runner up will receive $1 (everyone will receive a

prize).

Everyone in costume will receive a free hot dog sandwich, chips, and lemonade. Hot dogs will also be available at 4 p.m. to purchase.

“Come and enjoy seeing the many costumes and the fun everyone is having.

You can also enjoy a bite to eat!,” said Lion Elizabeth McKinstry.

Trunk N’ Treat The Lions are also offering a “Trunk N’ Treat” event. Cars will park along the west side of Bertolet Park, on both sides of the street, with their trunks open.

Those in costume will proceed along the rows of cars and receive their treats in that manner. The Village has agreed to block off Blaine St. for this to happen.

“This provides a quick and safe Trick or Treat environment for the children,” said McKinstry. “If Blaine St. fills with cars, we will line up around the corner in front of the Bertolet Building.”

Encore! hosts bus trip to ‘Illumination’ light display

Encore! Mt. Morris is sponsoring a Dec. 1 chartered bus trip to Naperville to see “Illumination: Tree Lights at the Morton Arboretum”.

Illumination is in its ninth year and features a one-mile paved walking path surrounded by hundreds of trees lit for the holidays. The lights are interactive and have ever-changing designs.

Participants will enjoy seasonal music, marvel at the lights and warm up by a crackling fire with a cozy drink or snack from concession stands on the grounds.

An art-oriented excursion of Naperville murals and dinner will take place prior to the Illumination event.

The Mt. Morris Community Library Foundation (MMCLF) is pleased and thankful for the generous support of its members and the community who have continued to support the 9x9x9 program that is beginning it’s third year bringing nine books throughout the school year to OES first grade students.

The program was started by Dawn Merrill and continues to be coordinated by the Foundation.

The 9x9x9 program is totally funded by donations and with contributions received from the summer ice cream social.

It is the Foundation’s hope that by providing these young readers with new books to call their own and instill the love of reading early in their young lives.

It is also the Foundation’s hope to continue this program for many years with the support of the community.

Donations can be made year round with checks made payable to the Mt. Morris Community Library Foundation (MMCLF) with 9x9x9 noted in the memo portion of the check.

Downtown buildings demolished in Mt. Morris

azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS — A half block of Mt. Morris’s downtown district will have a new look as three buildings were demolished.

Martin & Co, of Oregon, started demolition on Oct. 14 just west of the where Union Savings Bank was located on the corner of West Main Street and Wesley Avenue.

“It’s sad to lose an old building, but I think that, once it’s down, it’ll look nice and we’ll be able to see the campus from the highway,” Village Trustee Melissa Nicholson said. “It’ll be a good thing in the end.”

The complex being torn down, located at 2-4 West Main St., included the Wishard Building, which was constructed in 1920. The Wishard Building was, for many years, home to Citizens State Bank and other businesses, including the practice of Dr. H.J. Stengel. Demolition on that building began Monday and was scheduled to be completed on Wednesday. Debris from the demolition of the buildings is ongoing.

Jerry Stauffer, a village trustee and Economic Development Corporation board member, said he expects demolition and clean up to take a little more than a week. The plan is to return the area to green space, he said.

“A lot of the people in town didn’t want to see the building come down,” Stauffer said. “We worked very hard to try to save the building … but it just wasn’t in the cards.”

The building served the community and bank well for many years, Nick Gill, Union Savings Bank CEO and president said in a written statement provided to Shaw Media on Oct. 14.

“Unfortunately, its condition had deteriorated beyond the point of repair,” Gill wrote. “We decided to build a new office that will allow us to

In April, the bank broke ground on a new Mt. Morris facility just north of the Wishard Building, at 1 West Hitt St. (Illinois Route 64). All operations were transferred there as of Sept. 27.

Union Savings Bank’s main office is in Freeport. It has branches in Freeport, Rockford, Belvidere and Mt. Morris.

Fall Fest’s 85+Year History Fall Fest at Mt. Morris Disciples United Methodist Church is a long standing tradition. It began in the early 1930s at the first Methodist Church building on the corner of McKendrie and Front Streets.

The “Women’s Society” held a day long bazaar with all kinds of handmade items and a complete turkey dinner with turkeys provided by Baker Turkey Farm. Records show that in 1945, 459 people were served

Guide dogs for blind visit Bertolet LEAF RIVER — Bertolet Memorial Library recently went to the dogs — guide dogs, that is.

Sherry Perkowitz, of Leader Dogs for the Blind, brought five future guide dogs for individuals who are blind or visually impaired to the Leaf River library on Oct. 2 to share a glimpse of what it takes to be a puppy raiser.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is a guide dog training organization headquartered in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Perkowitz’s stories ranged from the humorous to the emotional.

She spoke about how proud she was of puppy Wendy for acting properly at

an outing, only to discover the puppy had quietly been shredding her neck kerchief during the event. Perkowitz also talked about how the sadness of saying goodbye to puppies when they turn 1 — the age they’re returned the Leader Dogs for the Blind headquarters — is offset by the knowledge that the dog will be assisting another in leading a life of independence and confidence.

The five dogs’ raisers accompanied Perkowitz to Bertolet Memorial Library. All reflected on the dedication and commitment required to raise future leader dog candidates.

The event has remained the same since 2008, but is now led by a Fall Fest Committee. The family style dinner, where seconds are encouraged, is still prepared by church women (with some help from the men), using the now famous original turkey casserole recipe developed by “Grandma” Bertha Baker more than 60 years ago.

Fall Fest was cancelled last year due to COVID-19, but it has returned this year in modified form.

The event was now led by United Methodist Women.

Through the 90s, the luncheon and bazaar were held on Veteran’s Day or the Wednesday closest to it. In the early 2000s the luncheon was changed to an October evening meal. The bazaar portion was discontinued and, by 2008, a Silent Auction was added and the bake sale became

It was a battle of state-title pedigree when Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley traveled three hours north to take on Forreston in a Saturday afternoon non-conference game.

It was no contest, as the Cardinals ran at will against the injury-plagued Falcons in a 36-7 win.

“We had three more go down today,” GCMS coach Mike Allen said.

“I’m not using that as an excuse, but it is tough to get continuity going.”

GCMS was especially hurt by Illinois recruit and sprint star Aidan Laughery playing with a hip flexor and knee injury. Other key players were at less than 100 percent coming into the game in what had to be Allen’s worst injury bug in 21 years at the school.

Winning the toss, Forreston elected to go on offense first and had little trouble advancing 68 yards in nine plays for an 8-0 lead. Sophomore Kaleb Sanders was stopped at the line of scrimmage, but got past the initial wave of the 7-man front and ran untouched 43 yards for the touchdown.

Forreston went 87 yards on its second score, with Logan Dyson efficiently directing the offense and confusing the defense with deft ball-handling. Noah Johnson got the touchdown on a 3-yard run and had a 28-yard gain earlier in the march.

“They ran the double dive better in person than on film,” Allen said. “You can’t simulate that in practice.”

Cole Becker recovered a fumble on GCMS next play from scrimmage. The Cardinals could not take advantage of the short field and the drive stalled at the 2-yard line.

QB Kellen DeSchepper and Kellen Fanson connected on a couple of

passes until Mason Fox stymied the Falcon drive with a 3-yard tackle for loss.

After receiving a punt, Forreston quickly went 45 yards for its third score of the first half. Joseph Fiorello, one of five backs to score, went 3 yards for the touchdown. Using its no-huddle offense and rotating backs every play, the Cardinals wore down the vis-

itors, taking a 20-0 lead into the break.

“It all starts with the line,” said Forreston coach Keynon Janicke at halftime. “They are finally hitting their stride and communicating.”

On GSMS’ first play from scrimmage in the second half, Devonte KingBlack blew it up with a tackle for loss.

That started a string of negative play by the Falcons.

“Forreston reacts and flies to ball well,” Allen said.

The teams traded fumbles before sophomore Micah Nelson got his first varsity touchdown on a 31-yard run in the third quarter. A Fiorello PAT run made it 28-0.

A fumble set up another short field for Forreston. It was King running untouched for a 23-yard score and Becker catching a PAT pass for a 36-0 lead.

Forreston had 214 yards rushing in the first half and ended up with 317 for the game. It was a balanced attack with Johnson (8-72), Matthew Beltran (8-54), King (5-52), Sanders (6-59), Nelson (6-42) and Fiorello (7-27) getting the bulk of yards.

GCMS was held to 59 rushing yards and 82 in the air. The loss also eliminated the Falcons (3-5) from playoff consideration.

Forreston (6-2), travels to LenaWinslow (7-1) for a regular-season finale with their chief rivals.

“It becomes more of an intense week,” Janicke said.

Oregon Hawks defeats Rock Falls for second win

Going into its BNC clash with Rock Falls on Oct. 15, the biggest worry for Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman was Booker Cross.

The all-everything running back and quarterback gave the Hawks all they could handle, but Oregon’s team strength and ability to make extra points was the difference in a 29-25 win. In total yardage, both teams were nearly identical with 271 for Oregon and 264 for RF. With a second-quarter injury to freshman quarterback Easton Canales, Cross was forced into signal-calling duties and the immediate result was a 28-yard pass completion, a 9-yard run and 3-yard touchdown with .7 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Hawks’ lead to 15-6.

“It definitely changed their offensive game plan,” Schneiderman said. “He plays hard and had incredible bursts. I’d say he is the most athletic kid in the conference.”

After being stuffed on a fourth down to start the game, fumbling on the first play of its next offensive possession and failing to cover an onside kick, Cross gave Rock Falls a much-needed spark.

Daniel Dominguez put Oregon ahead 8-0 lead on a 17-yard TD run and subsequent PAT run. Issac Reber made it 15-0 later in the first quarter on a 26-yard sweep around left end, with nobody home for Rock Falls on a fourth-and-4.

In the second quarter, Canales connected on passes to fellow freshman Austin Castaneda and a nifty sideline grab by Dillon Schueler, but the drive ended when Seth Stevens nailed Cross for a 3-yard loss on a jarring tackle.

However, a punt to the 1-yard line put Oregon in a deep hole and helped lead to the Rockets’ first score.

Any momentum Rock Falls had coming out of second half was stymied by a 67-yard scoring drive powered by the Hawk O-line of Jonathon Alaniz, Jackson Fox, Ethan George, Kaydin Reber and Evan Flaherty. It was Gabe Eckerd capping the drive off with a 2-yard score to make it 23-6.

“This was our hardest fought game,” Schneiderman said. “We took our lumps the last couple weeks.

Once, we got the ball rolling, it boost our confidence.”

Three plays later, it was the Booker Cross show again.

Operating in the shot gun, Cross out-maneuvered the Oregon defense for a 53-yard touchdown run, using his track speed to race past the finals defenders. The extra point attempt failed and those failed attempts would prove the deciding factor in the loss,

Brock Soltow ran for 183 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, and Deangelo Fernandez added eight carries for 73 yards for Polo (8-0), ranked No. 1 in 8-man.

Avery Grenoble, Tyler Merdian and Brady Wolber also ran for touchdowns, and Soltow, Grenoble and Kahlil Sankey had touchdown catches from Merdian, who was 4-for-4 for 190 yards through the air.

Grenoble opened the scoring with a 1-yard run, then Soltow scored from 32 yards out before Merdian connected with Sankey on a 37-yard scoring strike for a 24-0 lead after one quarter.

Getting the ball back in good field position following a punt and facemask penalty, Rock Falls looked to make it a 1-score margin, but a 34-yard field goal attempt by Vincent Lombardo was short.

Once again, it was the Oregon blockers opening up big holes for Dominguez and company to march down the field. Dominguez (27-164) carried the final nine yards of the 82-yard drive long drive by the Hawks for a 29-12 advantage.

In he fourth quarter, Cross rallied his team to within 29-19 on a 60-yard bomb to Baraka Board.

Then with 1:57 left in the game, he hit Schueler with a 2-yard score to make it 29-25.

Cross finished with 122 yards rushing on 22 attempts and 98 yards passing.

The only question at the Big Northern cross-country meet was not if the Winnebago girls or Rockford Christian boys would win, but whether any one could provide token opposition. In the boys race, no one was able to. The girls race was a different story, though.

Defending 1A state champ Winnebago romped to an easy win with 28 points out of the perfect score of 15, but the real story was the effort by the Dixon girls.

“Dixon went after it and competed really well,” Winnebago coach Joe Erb said. “They are so well-coached.”

One advantage Dixon had is that ‘Bago is more suited for flatter courses that showcase their team speed, such as what is found at Detweiller Park, site of the state meet where the Indians have won more state titles (12) than any program in the state, regardless of class.

Volleyball Tournament action: Rock Falls won the 2021 Linda Ludwig Memorial Tournament held at Eastland High School on Oct. 16. The Rockets defeated Sterling Newan 25-17, 25-17 in the championship match.

Freeport Aquin downed Eastland 25-21, 25-13 in the battle for third place and Oregon beat Stockton 25-22, 25-19 for fourth place.

Milledgeville took 7th place beating Durand 25-14, 25-14 and Riverdale took 9th beating Orangeville 27-25. 25-19.

Oregon’s Jenae Bothe was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Genoa-Kingston def. Oregon 25-12, 25-9: The Hawks fell in a Big Northern match on the road.

The top freshman finisher was a smiling Ella Danhorn of Oregon with a time of 19:20, good for 13th – and that was even with an untied shoelace.

“I’m surprised my shoe stayed on,” Danhorn said. “I love this course.”

In the boys race, it was complete domination by Rockford Christian, as it took the top three places and six of top 11 in a 23-63 win over second-place Rock Falls in what has become a non-competitive boys conference. Five schools did not even field full teams, including Dixon, which had previously contended with the Royal Lions for league titles.

Oregon’s top finishers were Aidan Guida (19:44.24) and Christopher Smith (20:10.14) in 40th and 41st.

The boys team placed third and was led by a third place overall finish from Carson Jones in 17:49.9 and a seventh place finish from Ben Plachno in 19:14.2. They were followed by three freshmen Kale Grobe, 22.32.6; Micah Sankey, 23:04.6; and Kameron Grobel, 23:09.3.

The girls also placed third and were led by three First Team All-Conference runners in Bekah Zeigler in sixth place in 21:01.4; Kamryn Stockton eighth, 24:25.3; and Courtney Grobe 11th, 24.54.5.

Ramsie Grenoble was also named All-Conference Honorable Mention with her 19th place finish among NUIC runners in 25:46.4. Ellia Escobar rounded out the scoring for the Marcos finishing 25th in 28:40.4.

t was nice to beat the western storms back home last week and take in a couple football games and the BNC cross country meet.

Big win for Oregon over Rock Falls in a battle of 1-6 football teams.

Booker Cross of Rofk Falls was worth price of admission, but what impressed me was Oregon finally getting physical with an opponent.

The offensive line moved people and there was hard hitting from the defense. Running back Daniel Dominguez continues to prove he is one of the top players in the BNC and is a shoo-in as an all-conference selection.

This is the seventh year in a row that the Hawks will finish with three wins or less. Prior to that, they had a stretch of 12 playoff appearances in 16 years.

On the positive, the program has been milking as many wins as possible with a dearth of talent over that time period.

Another positive is game experience. A top-notch stadium, replete with quality band and cheer teams make Fridays at Lander-Loomis a good time.

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert Saturday morning started with the league cross-country meet at the Byron Forest Preserve. The quality of competition has really regressed, with only Rockford Christian boys and Winnebago girls fielding state-caliber teams.

Nonetheless, any kid that goes out for cross country deserves credit for doing an unglamorous sport requiring lots of work.

I was excited to learn the NUIC had their first-ever cross country meet.

Four boys and three girls teams, including Polo in both, had full scoring teams.

In all, 40 boys and 31 girls competed in the meet at Pecatonica. Hopefully, those numbers will increase, as that conference doesn’t have soccer to have take athletes away.

It seems like numbers for golf in the NUIC have gone down over the years, but that likely been the case all over the popularity of the sport has

declined.

Finally got to see Forreston play football and it was the same brand of ball as I remember – non-huddle efficient offense, rotating backs and decent hitting.

Its game with Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley had a lot of potential when it was scheduled, but injuries devastated the visitors’ chances.

At least it was a pleasant, sunny Saturday afternoon to be in Forreston, amongst a typical large Cardinal crowd. Of the six Ogle county schools, I’m still convinced Forreston has the best overall fan support.

On to Polo this Friday for a key match up with Aquin. Though the Marcos are undefeated and Bulldogs have a couple losses (Milledgeville and Orangeville), this game could be a toss up.

These four NUIC teams are legitimately the best in all of 8-man. Surprise, surprise.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Stillman Valley and Hales Corner roads. After an investigation, deputies learned that a white Ford F550 driven by Brian Johnson, of Byron, proceeded eastbound through the Stillman Valley and Hales Corner roads intersection without giving the right-of-way to a silver Honda Accord driven by Dylan Boyd, of Stillman Valley, who was traveling northbound.

Johnson was cited for disobeying a traffic control device. Boyd was transported to SwedishAmerican Hospital for suspected minor injuries.

Oct. 10 Wayne Master, 47, of New Lenox, was arrested on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64 for driving while license suspended.

Deputies had stopped Master for speeding.

Master was released on an I-Bond.

At approximately 7:53 p.m., deputies came upon a single-vehicle crash with no injuries at the intersection of Illinois Routes 251 and 72. After an investigation, deputies arrested Paul Chareun, 64, of Crest Hill, for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Chareun also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Chareun was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Derek Jarvis, 35, of Rochelle, was arrested at 11:05 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop at the intersection of South Mulford and East Lind. Jarvis also was cited for improper lane usage and transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 11 Pauly Rico, 21, of Byron, was arrested at 8:59 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a vehicle stuck in a ditch in the 4000 block of East Countryview Drive. Rico also was cited for driving too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured vehicle. Rico was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 12 At around 12:19 p.m., deputies stopped a 2005 Chevy Cobalt driven by Omar Spearman, 34, of Iowa City, Iowa, on Interstate 39 at mile marker 101 for an

equipment violation. After an investigation, Spearman was arrested for driving with a suspended license. Spearman was released on a $2,500 I-Bond and will appear in court on Nov. 12 at 9 a.m.

Deputies responded to a violation of order of protection in the 300 block of West Balsam Street in Forreston at approximately 7:03 p.m. After an investigation, Darrell Starr Jr., 38, of Forreston, was arrested for violation of an order of protection. Starr was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 13 James Abbott, 28, of Grand Detour, was arrested at 6:21 p.m. for aggravated battery to peace officer after police responded to the area of Broad and South Green streets in Grand Detour for a check welfare of an intoxicated subject. Abbott was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 15 Dylan Evans, 22, of Rockford, was arrested at 6:54 p.m. for driving with a suspended license, unlawful possession of cannabis 30-100 grams and unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of North Stillman Road. Evans also was cited for speeding and loud exhaust. A passenger, Nicholas Maxey, 22, of Loves Park, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant and cited for illegal transportation of alcohol. Evans and Maxey were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 16 Dontay Caviness, 36, of Rockford, was arrested for driving with a suspended license, unlawful possession of cannabis 30-100 grams and unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the Circle K gas station parking lot in Byron at approximately 3:48 p.m. Caviness was transported to the Ogle County Jail. A passenger, Rachel Jones, 33, of Rockford, was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container.

Jones was released on an I-Bond.

Oct. 17 At approximately 12:27 a.m., deputies responded to a driving complaint in the 3000 block of Illinois Route 64. Deputies located

the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of East Brick Road. After an investigation, Paul Harrison, 49, of Chana, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Harrison also was cited for improper lane usage. Harrison was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Ogle County deputies and Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS responded to the 4500 block of Illinois Route 251 at approximately 2 a.m. for a two-vehicle crash. Deputies determined that Stephanie Neff, 36, of Holcomb, was traveling northbound on Illinois Route 251 when she struck a pickup truck traveling northbound in front of her near the rear driver’s side truck bed. The truck was driven

by Austin Nutt, 19, of Dixon, who was accompanied by two juveniles.

Nutt and the two juveniles were treated in the scene by Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS and released.

Neff was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Neff was cited for driving while under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and following too close.

Neff was released on an I-Bond and a return court date.

At approximately 4:06 p.m., deputies responded to a motorcycle crash in the 10700 block of Illinois Route 2. Deputies said Michael Daun, 60, of Island Lake, was driving a motorcycle northbound, failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and entered the east ditch. Daun sustained apparent minor injuries in the crash and Byron EMS transported him to SwedishAmerican Hospital. The crash remains under investigation.

Takyra Young, 31, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:37 p.m. for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 17000 block of Illinois Route 64. Young also was cited for an inoperable registration light.

Young was released on an I-Bond and given a ride to Rochelle.

A passenger, Fatimah Edmond, 24, of Rockford, was arrested on an failure-to-appear Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended. Edmond was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Oct. 6 Anthony Apodaca, 40, of Leaf River, was arrested for battery, violation of an order of protection and on a valid Ogle County warrant for failure to appear (violation of an order of protection). He was arrested after deputies responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of Main Street in Leaf River at approximately 9:02 p.m. Apodaca was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 7 Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Flagg and Lowden roads for a two-vehicle crash with no injuries at 4:46 a.m. After an investigation, police determined that Austin Pearson, 20, of Oregon, was driving eastbound on Flagg Road in a Nissan and stopped with traffic at the stop sign.

Antonio Stokes, 31, of Dixon, also was traveling eastbound on Flagg Road in a Lincoln SUV. Stokes failed to reduce speed and struck the rear bumper of Pearson’s Nissan.

During the investigation, it was found Stokes was driving on a revoked driver’s license. Stokes was taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County Jail. Stokes also was cited for failure to reduce speed to prevent an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Arturo M. Garcia, 25, of Rockford, was arrested at 5:21 p.m. for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 6000 block of Illinois Route 2. Garcia also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no valid registration. Garcia was released on an I-Bond.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:34 p..m. to a driving complaint at Main and 6th streets in Leaf River. As a result, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of Main Street. After further investigation, a juvenile female, of Leaf River, was arrested for no valid driver’s license. The juvenile was released to a guardian with a date to appear in court.

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Judith “Judi” A. DeVries, after a long illness, went to be with her Lord on September 4, 2021.

Judi died peacefully at home after a long illness. Judi was born on August 21, 1942 in Joliet, Illinois, to Fred and Leola Walker. Judi married Harold (Butch) DeVries of Morrison, Illinois on September 16, 1966. She attended Forreston High School, was a member of the graduating class of 1961, and graduated from Wisconsin State University in Platteville with a degree in Elementary Education.

Judi is survived by husband Harold DeVries of St. George, UT, Son Jim DeVries of Golden Valley, Minnesota and Brother Jim Walker of Sarasota, Florida. Judi was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Leola Walker, Brother Robert Walker and Sister Francis Cook.

Judi began her teaching career in Sterling, IL at Wallace School. She also taught in Oshkosh, WI and Wisconsin Rapids, WI before moving with Butch to Minnesota, first to Sauk Centre and then, for many years, in Alexandria, MN. During all her life prior to moving to St. George, UT, she often taught Sunday School and Bible School and sometimes served as Superintendent of those programs in Churches they attended. She and Butch were members of New Promise Lutheran Church in St. George at her death.

Throughout her life Judi had empathy and love for the less fortunate and especially underprivileged children and that was often the focus of her teaching and outreach. She also had a heart for those with alcohol addiction and mentored many younger women with alcohol or drug addictions. She was instrumental in establishing Celebrate Recovery in their home church in Alexandria, MN. Butch and Judi celebrated her own 39 years of recovery and sobriety on May 23, 2021.

Also, 3 brothers-in-law Donald Sander, Fred (Bea) Sander, Donald (Carol) Walmsley; and sister-in-law and brother-inlaw Harry (Bernice) Roberts all from Minnesota.

Funeral visitation and services will be held Friday, October, 22, 2021 at Forreston Grove Church, Forreston. Visitation at 9:30 a.m. until time of services, services at 10:30, and internment to follow services. Pastor Justin Coverstone of Grace Fellowship Church will officiate.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Born: June 3, 1926 in Forreston, IL Died: October 17, 2021 in Freeport, IL Irma Mae Sander, 95, lifelong resident of Forreston, IL passed away October 17, 2021 at Ascension Living St Joseph Village in Freeport, IL. She was born at home in Forreston, IL on June 3, 1926. The daughter of Manuel and Reka (Fruhling) Wubbena. She married Dean F Sander at Forreston Grove Church, Forreston, IL on April 18, 1947. Dean passed away February 21, 1992. She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church, Freeport, IL. She was the valedictorian of Forreston High School class of 1944. She was a bookkeeper for Sander’s Locker, Lazarus Chevrolet/Buick, Clarence Anderson Chevrolet/Buick, Schmauss Chevrolet/Buick and a teller for Forreston State Bank, all businesses in Forreston. She was treasurer, Jr/Sr Sunday School department superintendent, Sunday School teacher, member of women’s fellowship and senior choir at Forreston Grove Church, Forreston, gardened, reading and enjoyed her family.

2021 List of Assessment Changes The following is a list of assessment changes made in Grand Detour, Lafayette, Oregon-Nashua, Pine Creek, Pine Rock, Rockvale and Taylor townships by the township assessor, and/or approved or revised by the supervisor of assessments.

The values shown are after the application of equalization factors.

Under the authority of 35 ILCS 200/9210 (Illinois Compiled Statutes), notice is hereby given that the following equalization factors (or “multipliers”) have been applied to all non-farm land and improvements on class 0010, 0011, 0020, 0028, 0030, 0040, 0050, 0060 and 0070 properties in the following townships, all other classes received a 1.0000 factor; Grand Detour 1.0471 Lafayette 1.0400 Oregon-Nashua 1.0464 Pine Creek 1.0471 Pine Rock 1.0400 Rockvale 1.0470 Taylor 1.0750 Pursuant to 35 ILCS 200/10-115, the farmland assessments for the 2021 assessment year have increased by 10% of the preceding year’s median cropped soil productivity index per acre as certified by the Illinois Department of Revenue. Data was provided by the Farmland Assessment Advisory Board and approved by the Ogle County Farmland Assessment Review Committee resulting in an increase in assessment of $35.21 per acre for each soil productivity index.

Pursuant to 35 ILCS 200/12-10, individual notices will not be mailed on properties with assessment changes due to equalization alone. The factors shown are determined by the Illinois Department of Revenue’s most recent sales-to-assessment ratio study, and take into consideration any assessment changes made by the assessor. These factors bring the average assessment level in the townships to 33 1/3%

of market value, and they will be applied to the categories of property listed above.

The resulting value should equal the estimated fair cash value of your property. If the resulting value is greater than the fair cash value of your property, you may be over-assessed. If you believe your property’s fair cash value is incorrect or that the equalized assessed valuation is not uniform with other comparable properties in the same neighborhood, the following steps should be taken: 1. Contact your township assessor to review the assessment.

2. If you are not satisfied with the assessor review, taxpayers may file a complaint with the Ogle County Board of Review.

Under the authority of 35 ILCS 200/9210 (Illinois Compiled Statutes), notice is hereby given that the following equalization factors (or “multipliers”) have been applied to all non-farm land and improvements on class 0010, 0011, 0020, 0028, 0030, 0040, 0050, 0060 and 0070 properties in the following townships, all other classes received a 1.0000 factor; Buffalo 1.1050 Eagle Point 1.0471 Woosung 1.0471 Pursuant to 35 ILCS 200/10-115, the farmland assessments for the 2021 assessment year have increased by 10% of the preceding year’s median cropped soil productivity index per acre as certified by the Illinois Department of Revenue. Data was provided by the Farmland Assessment Advisory Board and approved by the Ogle County Farmland Assessment Review Committee resulting in an increase in assessment of $35.21 per acre for each soil productivity index.

Pursuant to 35 ILCS 200/12-10, individual notices will not be mailed on properties with assessment changes due to equalization alone. Universal Telephone Assistance Programs Administered in Illinois by the Universal Telephone Assistance Corporation (UTAC) LifeLine Program Making local phone service affordable Lifeline is a program which provides $5.25 in assistance to help pay monthly charge from local telephone service. This federally funded program is available to qualified low-income consumers. If the qualifying low-income consumer voluntarily elects toll blocking while initiating Lifeline service, a service deposit is not required.
