space-themed party. Amelia’s uncle, Brad Ohlwine, surprised the birthday girl with a funny costume to go with the theme.

This past Saturday morning, I had the honor of hosting the women’s breakfast group. It was great to share in conversation with the women of our church. Attending the breakfast were Vicki Hay, Sheryl Hopkins, Suzanne Hall Stout, Sandra Ford, Judy Riffle, and Martha Johannsen.

In the evening, I joined two of my coworkers for dinner. We traveled to Clinton, Iowa to a new favorite restaurant of ours. I am continually grateful for the friendships that have formed over the years at all my workplaces.

Don and Vicki Hay have been busy preparing for a special birthday in the family.

Vicki’s mother, Dee Michelini turns 100 this week. Today, they had a small family gathering with her to celebrate the upcoming milestone.

On Tuesday evening, I attended the regular meeting of our PEO Chapter DW at the Faith United Methodist Church. We were hosted by Karen Scholl and Robin Jefford.

It was great to see my sisters from Pine Creek, Betty Hare, Vicki Hay, Maggie Henning, Lisa Coffman, and Beverly Coffman.

This has been a long weekend for me as we have reached the end of the first quarter at school. I have spent some of the time

thinking about how I will approach and improve over the next quarter. I also made time for lots and lots of rest.

Learning a new skill can be tricky. I still remember when I learned how to roller skate. At the time, they had an organist play music while the skaters whizzed around the oval rink. My mom was really great at roller skating. It was one of her favorite activities.

Trying to learn how to balance on wheels was not easy for me. I spent most of my time holding on to the rail as I went around. In the corner, there was a break in the railing and I had to trust myself to make it across.

It can be scary to learn something new.

Even though we might feel we are roller skating without the safety of a railing, we always have God to lean on. With God’s constant and faithful presence, we can reach out and take a risk.

I hope to see you next week as we fill our churches with people excited to get to know God. Our church family welcomes you and your family. Come and worship in song, spend time in prayer, and learn about the love that God has for you.

BY KAREN MERLAK The rain has finally arrived. The grass is now greener than it was this summer. Our farmers will navigate these changes once again. God knows the challenges we face and is with us as we face them. For His presence in everything we do, we are very grateful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Judy Nettz and her granddaughter, Cameron Jones, who was visiting our church for the morning. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout gave our morning message on the importance of community.

Pastor Suzanne has added a children’s message for Amelia, daughter of Katie and Cliff Pfundstein. Slowly, we are adding back the parts of worship we have been missing. We are so grateful for the sounds and excitement of children in our congregation.

Amelia recently celebrated her fifth birthday with a family party. There were many family members present including her grandparents, Phil and Deb Ohlwine, and her great-grandparents, Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins.

Amelia’s great-uncle Mike and his wife, Rena Hopkins traveled from the Chicago area to celebrate her big day. It was a

KSB looking into ‘improper release’ of patient information

KSB Hospital in Dixon is investigating an improper release of patient data.

DIXON – KSB Hospital is investigating an “improper release” of patient data by a third party billing contractor and contacting patients about the issue.

Sauk Valley Media was contacted by concerned community members who received bills from the hospital that included information from more than 100 patients.

KSB spokesman Kevin Marx said they are looking into the scope of the disclosure, and the personal data that was released was minimal and did not include private financial information.

“While patient privacy is a top priority for KSB Hospital, we have

become aware of an improper release of patient-related information by a third-party billing contractor,” Marx said in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously, and while we are limited in what we can say today, be assured that we are thoroughly looking into the cause of the problem. At the same time, we are currently reaching out by phone to every patient who may have been affected. Details on the scope of the disclosure will be released as soon as they are available.

“Importantly, we can say that the data that was released was minimal and did not include any personal contact information, clinical records, or private financial information including Social Security numbers.”

NEWS BRIEF Franklin Creek to dedicate trail to Larry Dunphy; dedication is Sunday

FRANKLIN GROVE – Franklin Creek Conservation Association will open the Larry Dunphy Memorial Storybook Trail on Oct. 17 at the Hausen-Knox Shelter in the Franklin Creek State Natural Area.

Children’s nature activities and entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. These include seed plantings, creating bird feeders, scavenger hunts and a reading of the trail’s featured story, “Miss

Maple’s Seeds.”

A celebration of life for Dunphy will begin at 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to share memories of Dunphy’s dedication to nature and literacy.

Dunphy founded Books on First in Dixon with his wife, Carolyn Chin, and he served on the FCCA board.

The Rochelle Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution installed new officers for the 2021-23 term.

Three area theaters combining for November musical Three area theater groups are combining forces for a special musical performance in November.

The Mighty Richland Players Dessert Theater, Polo Area Community Theater, and Morrison Music Theatre Association will be joining together for the first time ever to perform one big concert of Broadway music on Nov. 12-14.

Dylan Hinrichs is the musical director.

They will be joining thousands of theatrical organizations around the world by producing their own local production of Music Theatre International’s All Together Now!: A Global Event Celebrating Local Theatre.

MTI created this revue for theaters

across the globe to use as a local fundraising event, all performed over the same weekend. Several countries and theaters from all 50 states will be participating in this event.

A fantastic selection of songs are featured in this brand new musical revue from shows including Rent, Into the Woods, Annie, Once on This Island, High School Musical, Les Miserables, and Mary Poppins.

“MTI’s All Together Now! is about bringing people back to the theatre,

whether as audience members or cast, crew and musicians,” said MTI President and CEO, Drew Cohen. “The revue features songs from the world’s most iconic musicals, so there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy. HALLOWEEN EVENT Leaf River Lions to offer Halloween costume contest and Trunk N’ Treat on Oct. 31

The Leaf River Lion’s Club is offering a Halloween Costume Contest and Trunk N’ Treat in Leaf River on Sunday, Oct. 31 from 4-7 p.m.

The afternoon will begin with the Leaf River Lion’s sponsored Costume Contest at 3:30 p.m., which will be held at the Bertolet Memorial Building. Weather permitting the contest will be outside.

Classes for judging are: 0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5 years and Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades; Middle School, High School and Adult.

First place in each division will receive $5, second place

will receive $3, and runner up will receive $1 (everyone will receive a prize).

Everyone in costume will receive a free hot dog sandwich, chips, and lemonade. Hot dogs will also be available at 4 p.m. to purchase.

“Come and enjoy seeing the many costumes and the fun everyone is having. You can also enjoy a bite to eat!,” said Lion Elizabeth McKinstry.

Trunk N’ Treat The Lions are also offering a “Trunk N’ Treat” event. Cars will park along the west side of Bertolet Park, on both sides of the street, with their trunks open.

Those in costume will proceed along the rows of cars and receive their treats in that manner. The Village has agreed to block off Blaine St. for this to happen.

“This provides a quick and safe Trick or Treat environment for the children,” said McKinstry. “If Blaine St. fills with cars, we will line up around the corner in front of the Bertolet Building.”

Trunk N’ Treat will begin at 4 p.m. and run until there are no more Trick or Treaters.

Polo firefighters talk fire safety at hog roast

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — A hog wasn’t the only thing cooking at the Polo Fire Protection District’s hog roast and open house Oct. 9.

The event, which drew around 300 people, also included demonstrations on fire safety.

“Everything went real good,” Fire Chief Jim Ports said. “We got a lot of support from the public and we really appreciate it. … I can’t stress enough that I really appreciate the public’s ongoing support of the fire department.”

Firefighter/paramedic D.J. Sanders agreed.

“Everything I heard was very positive,” Sanders said. “People were happy to come out again. We didn’t get to have this event last year due to the pandemic.”

The event ran from 4-8 p.m. with pork sandwiches, potato chips, mashed potatoes, corn, backed beans, coleslaw, applesauce and ice cream being served.

There also was an educational children’s smoke house and, at 5:30 p.m., a live fire demonstration.

In the demonstration, a three-room structure was set ablaze to illustrate the safety benefits of closing ones bedroom door before sleeping. One of the rooms was separated from the fire by a closed door, and another had the door left open.

Christina Bingham won a raffle drawing, bringing home a freezer donated by Knie Appliance & TV Inc., in Polo, and a quarter-beef purchased by the firefighters, Sanders said.

The money will go toward new rescue equipment and equipment for the fire trucks, Ports said. Totals were not available as of Tuesday.

Some of the funds will be donated to breast cancer awareness, Sanders said.

“We really appreciate the show of support for the public and always appreciate them coming out to help us out,” Sanders said.

The winning ticket was sold at the Ogle County Brewery in downtown Oregon.

“Thank you to The Harvard State Bank in Oregon, for teaming up with us on the 2021 AOP 60/40 raffle. We appreciate your partnership,” said 60/40 Chairman Dave Boehle.

Proceeds from the raffle are used by the all-volunteer to help fund AOP events.

SPECIAL EVENTS The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be hosting two residential electronics recycling events in the coming weeks.

Events will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

These events are by advance permit only and will be held at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

Historical society meeting packed for presentation

W

e had our meeting for Polo Historical Society and I wondered how many we would have.

Mr. Volker was coming from Princeton. Several of our members are sick and Ed and Karen Olsen have moved. I should not have worried because the place was packed and it was good to see everybody.

Several people came from Mt. Morris and Oregon who were Coke collectors and Mr. Volker had a very interesting presentation. When you are a Coca-Cola salesman for many years, it is interesting what all you go through and he did much to “peddle his product”.

We had a great evening. Thanks to all who came. Paula and Mike even had Coca-Cola for all of us to drink plus other goodies.

I filled people in on the visit to the Blough home and the map of Native

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf American villages. This map had been done in 1911 by W. W. Hixson and Son from Rockford and was a rare map.

We had the map there that has been copied to show people and they were interested. One is at Trotter’s to be framed and when it is ready, Beth, Mike, and I will have another hanging session of where things go.

We also came back to town that day after being in the Blough home with two paintings. These were done by Robert Wesley Amick (1879-1969).

Mr. Amick was an American painter who was interested in painting early western history. As a child he did pen and ink drawings and eventually studied at Yale. His studies were

in law and instructors pushed him to be a lawyer which he did not like.

He left the law practice to study life and he lived among the Native Americans for several years. He became well known for twelve paintings of the American West. In 1921-1929 a United States Painting and Lithograph Company reproduced these twelve paintings and sent them to schools across the country.

Congress School received two of these paintings. They were “Acoma Man with Pottery” and “The Indian Weaver”. When Congress School closed they had an auction and Dale Blough bought both of those.

The Blough family has now donated both to Polo Historical Society.

The Acoma Pueblo is a Native American pueblo 60 miles west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The story of Acoma still goes on. Preservation of its architecture construction made by

bare hands is taking place today. This Native American pueblo goes back for more than 370 years.

As we hung the pictures, Beth Wiegmann related the story of the pueblo to us and what it all looked like since she had visited it when she lived in that area many years ago. I was impressed with her knowledge and she will be a great asset to Polo Historical Society.

I remembered the Acoma Native Americans when I was teaching first grade in Polo. Every fall we did a Native American program and we did a rain dance by the Acoma children for one of our songs.

Rhyme awareness is an important teaching tool T

his is the third in a series of columns that will explain some of the activities that we do at school to build the skills necessary for learning to read and write. This information may help us understand some of the work our children and grandchildren talk about doing at school Learning the names of the letters of the alphabet – both upper and lower case – and the sounds that the letters represent is a foundational skill for learning to read the English language.

So is something called phonological awareness.

Phonological awareness is being able to hear all parts of words from syllables and rhymes to each individual sound or phoneme. Research has found that this is a necessary skill for learning to read.

We can play with listening for syllables in words by starting with names.

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner

Help your child say their name and clap for each syllable – or word part – they hear. Clap the names of each family member in that same way and count the number of syllables.

For many children the ability to understand rhyme develops naturally.

This happens when children are exposed to songs, nursery rhymes, poetry, and rhyming stories. Since most children enjoy and respond to all of these in a positive way, our job is easy. We can provide many opportunities to experience all of these and in as many ways as possible. Songs, music videos, and books filled with nursery rhymes and poetry offer a variety of ways to hear rhymes over and over

again.

At school we sing, learn poems and rhymes, and read lots of books with fun rhymes and language play. Lots of us sing to our children and grandchildren at bedtime and maybe in the car as well. This is a perfect way to experience rhyming words. (Thankfully they’re happy no matter how we sing!)

We can also play with rhymes in conversation. We can ask our children and grandchildren to think about rhymes. We can say two words and ask them if they rhyme. We can say, “Goat, coat – do they rhyme?” We can also say three words and ask them to choose the two that rhyme. So, we would say hop, run, and shop and ask them to tell which one doesn’t rhyme. We might say, “What words can you think of that rhyme with cat?”

Asking them to come up with their own rhyming words is harder than the other two tasks, so judge whether your

child or grandchild is ready for that skill. They might also come up with nonsense words, but if they rhyme it counts for this game. You might discuss which words they said are “real words” and which are made up.

Being able to identify words that rhyme often happens at the same time children are learning to identify beginning sounds in words. In order to know that bat, cat, and hat rhyme a child needs to understand that the /at/ stays the same, but the beginning sounds are different. You can see how this skill helps build the foundation for beginning to read those same words.

Have fun with your young readers with rhymes in all these ways! You’ll be building oral language and helping build important foundational skills for learning to read.

Born: October 19, 1957 in Dixon, IL Died: September 18, 2021 in Freeport, IL Steven A. Buskohl, 63, of Polo, passed away Saturday, Sept.

18, 2021, at Freeport Hospital. Steve was born Oct. 19, 1957, in Dixon, the son of Robert and Veva (Hubbard) Buskohl.

He married Donita Blanchard on August 31, 2018, in Oregon.

Steve proudly served in the US Army from 1975 to 2001, and for a period, was the personal chef to Gen. Omar Bradley. He was a Recruiter and Food Service Specialist while in the service. After the military, he went to work for Raynor Garage Door. Steve received many decorations from the Army, including the National Defense

Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Meritorious Service Medal. He had a passion for cooking for his family, friends and organizing family get togethers. Steve was loved and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Donita; daughters, Amber (Jacob) Westfall of California, Tiffany (Dave) Noonan of Pennsylvania, and stepdaughter, Ashley Rinehart of Polo; son, Brandon (Beccah) Buskohl of West Virginia, and stepson, Ryan Rinehart of Polo; sister, Pam of Iowa; brother, Tom (Marla) Buskohl of Polo; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of his life will be at Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, with military honors given at 12:00 p.m. in Fairmount Cemetery, Polo. After military honors the gathering will move to 512 S. Franklin Ave in Polo. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.

He was born in Rochelle, Illinois on September 12, 1962, and lived in Ashton, Illinois, until moving to Oregon at the age of 8. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1980.

Ron began his career at Exelon’s Byron Nuclear Station as a contractor, then transitioned to Exelon’s Quality Verification Department. Over the course of 30 years, he attained numerous professional credentials, ultimately serving as Supervisory Quality Verification Inspector and overseeing the Byron Station’s Quality Verification Department.

Richard Eugene Lewandowski, 80, went peacefully to be with his Lord to his heavenly home on September 30, 2021, at his home in Kingsport, Tennessee, with his wife at his bedside.

He married Barbara Kay Garkey on August 30, 2019, in Deland, Florida.

treynolds@shawmedia.com In a busy day at the boys and girls sate golf meets for local athletes, seven of the eight individuals golfing in Oct. 9’s final round placed in the top 51 in Bloomington-Normal and Decatur.

The area’s top finisher was Newman junior Kyle Wolfe, who tied for ninth in the Class 1A boys meet at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington. He followed up Friday’s firstround 74 with a second-round 77 on Saturday, shooting a 151 for the twoday tournament.

Wolfe made a birdie and only three bogeys in his round of 2-over 74 on Friday, shooting 1-over on both nines. He then came back on Day 2 and made a pair of birdies on the back nine to help offset seven bogeys in a 5-over 77.

Wolfe’s teammate, senior Jacob Donald, finished in a tie for 41st, following Friday’s 79 with an 81 for a 160.

In between, he returned to Sterling on Friday night to kick four extra points and a 38-yard field goal in the Comets’ 43-0 win over Hall.

Dixon sophomore Katie Drew tied for 30th with a 163, as her second-day 83 featured one birdie and 11 bogeys.

Oregon junior Ava Hackman tied for 42nd at 168, shooting a 79 on Day 2, 10 strokes better than her Day 1 89. She made three bogeys to offset seven bogeys; two of the birdies came on consecutive holes on the front nine.

Rock Falls senior Ellie Wasson followed her Friday round of 88 with an 85 on Day 2, notching three pars in her round.

She and Firorini were cheered on by the rest of their teammates, as the Rockets advanced to the state meet for the first time in program history but couldn’t make the cut to play as a team on Day 2.

The Clippers scored 93 points to defeat runner-up Monticello by eight.

Rock Falls was sixth (188), Newman took seventh (212), Polo placed 18th (45), and Eastland finished 20th (538) in the field that included 166 runners from 36 teams. Erie-Prophetstown, Bureau Valley, Morrison and Oregon did not field full teams.

“It was an amazing team effort. We ran as a team and achieved one of the goals we had at the start of the season,” Amboy coach Michael Robinson said. “It was close, but in the end, we pulled it out. We ran great races in bad weather and showed what we could do. It was good to have everyone give all they had.”

Rock Falls was led by a 13th-place finish from Jose Gomez in 16:56.1.

Bureau Valley’s Elijah House was the only other local runner in the top 20, as he took 20th in 17:07.3. Polo’s Carson Jones was 25th in 17:12.8.

Newman was led by Lucas Schaab in 29th (17:19.0) and Lucas Simpson in 33rd (17:36.4).

In addition to Jones’ finish, the Marcos also got an 88th from Ben Plachno (19:00.6), a 141st from Kale Grobe (22:23.1), a 145th from Kameron Grobe (22:39.2), and a 158th from Micah Sankey (24:39.2).

Oregon runners were Christopher Smith (124th, 20:59.4), Aidan Guida (135th, 21:44.6), Nicholas Meives-Wylie (159th, 25:30.6), and Bryan Immel (163rd, 27:59.2).

Girls race Rock Falls was the top team in sixth place (196 points), led by top local finishers Tayli Hultin in 15th (19:35.2) and Hana Ford in 24th (20:06.4).

Aurora Rosary’s Lianna Surtz won the race in 17:30.7, while Winnebago took the team title with 50 points.

Other local teams were Erie-Prophetstown in 15th (395), Amboy-LaMoille in 16th (400), Oregon in 19th (516), Polo in 20th (530), and Newman in 21st (540).

Eastland, Bureau Valley and Morrison did not field full teams in the 35-team, 181-runner event.

Fulton defense holds off Forreston in NUIC clash Steamers defense stops Cardinals in second half to hold on to a 24-14 win

eingles@shawmedia.com FULTON – Nursing a three-point lead most of the second half, Fulton’s defense made stop after stop to hold off Forreston 24-14 on Oct. 8, making the Steamers playoff eligible.

The Cardinals got the ball first in the second half, taking over at their own 31, and got the ball to the Fulton 46 be fore the Steame rs’ defens e stuffed a fourth-and-2 play for a turnover on downs.

The next Forreston drive started at the Cardinals’ 4 after Noah Johnson intercepted a pass in the end zone.

From there, the Cardinals got out to the 26, but back-to-back incomplete passes forced a punt.

Forreston turned the ball over on downs again with 6:38 to go in the game. A second-down pass down the field to Matthew Beltran was just a bit out of his reach, and the Steamers stopped runs on third and fourth down.

“Our defense just played well all four quarters,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “When we had Du-Pec come in here [Week 3], we gave up quite a few yards rushing. When Lena came to town [Week 5], we gave up quite a few yards rushing.

Tonight we knew we were going to give up some yards. We really concentrated on first down, owning our first down and making them earn everything, and I believe every yard they got tonight, including both scores, they earned every bit of it.”

Fulton got an insurance score with 3:38 left in the game on a halfback pass. Jacob Jones took a pitch from Steamers quarterback Brayden Dykstra and, rolling right, found a wide-open Brock Mason in the end zone for a 23-yard score.

“That ball’s been slippery all day, it’s been tough to hold onto,” Jones said. “I got the reverse, and we’ve been practicing for a time like this. I saw [Mason] beat his guy, and the rest was history.”

Jones then came through with a defensive play on the ensuing drive.

With Forreston looking at a lastditch effort in the waning minutes, Jones came off the edge to sack Cardinals quarterback Logan Dyson.

Jones said. “They had to pass, I just saw it, and you have to make a play to win games.”

But Forreston’s defense came through with big plays as well. The Cardinals stopped Fulton for a threeand-out on the game’s opening drive, Fulton gaining just one yard on the series. Forreston then ended the half

with a sack near midfield as time ran out on the second quarter as Fulton had gotten into position to attempt a Hail Mary.

In the second half, after Johnson’s end zone interception, the Cardinals defense forced a turnover on downs at their own 21.

“Our effort was absolutely there.

We’re not doubting our guys there,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said. “They gave it everything they had, there were just a couple of plays they got behind us, and corners, safeties, we can’t let guys get behind us.”

Liam Dickson-Harriett scores 3 in Hawks’ loss to Stillman Valley

ehinton@oglecountynews.com STILLMAN VALLEY — A hat trick by an Oregon senior wasn’t enough on Saturday as the Hawks’ season ended in a 4-3 loss at the Stillman Valley 1A soccer regional.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime and with leading scorer Joey Gelander sidelined with a hamstring injury, it looked like Oregon was going to end their 2021 quietly.

Another goal by the Cardinals early in the period gave all indications that the door had definitely closed on the Hawks’ season, but Liam Dickson-Hariett, one of three seniors on the Hawks’ team and team co-captain, wasn’t just quite ready to call it quits.

When coach Seger Larson sent a limping Gelander into the game, he moved Dickson-Harriett to a right forward position — and he did not disappoint.

He first scored at the 12 minute mark to make it 3-1, but Stillman countered with a goal to make it 4-1.

He then made a run at the 6-minute mark, dodged

“We were down 2-0 at halftime and made some adjustments to try and get some offense in the second half, but we continued to not communicate and went down 3-0 early in the second half,” said Larson. “I ended up putting Joey in the game and told him not to run, but to distribute the ball. I wanted to give him the opportunity to play in what ended up being his last game.

“Liam had been in the middle for us this year, but I ended up moving him to the outside because I saw a weakness on their defense which lead to him getting the hat trick in his last career game, “ said Larson, “But earlier mistakes put us too far back.”

Larson said one of Dickson’s goals came on assists from fellow seniors Gelander and Issac Nelson.

“The best moment in the game for me was when Joey played a ball to Isaac who played it to Liam who scored,” said Larson. “That was a nice triangle with all three seniors for one last go.”

nce again, out of the loop due to making 2,700-mile round trip to Utah for twin grand-daughters’ birthday party.

Grateful to the foresight to build the Cold War inspired Interstate highway system back in the 1950s.

Traversing Interstate 80, I think of how critical over-the-road truckers are to our economy. Hats off to everyone that drives a big rig.

I got back to Oregon a couple days earlier than anticipated to avoid impending storms. If you’ve ever driving through windswept Wyoming when snow hits, you know how treacherous that can be.

These storms started last weekend, with news of runners needing to be rescued off a Utah mountain because of sudden whiteout conditions of 12-18 inches of snow during a 50-mile race.

Enjoying birthday cake that afternoon in a warm house, only a few miles from the race, I pondered the danger factor of ultra-running.

The local TV stations castigated the race director for putting the event on in such inclement conditions. That’s unfair.

checked, one can never anticipate all possibilities. Additionally, runners sign up for these races at their own risk and prepare accordingly. They know inherent dangers exist and will never blame others.

The only problem is the amount of resources used by a taxpayer-supported search-and-rescue operation.

So, my insight into the local sports scene was what I read online.

What stood out most was a pair of 79s shot by Ava Hackman of Oregon at the sectional and state golf meet. The significance of this is the pressure cooker that the postseason is.

To me, it is mentally tougher than any other prep sport. Golf is hard enough on a leisurely recreational round.

For a teenager to score rounds in the 70s is a testament to Ava’s resilience with so much at stake. Congratulations on nearly making the cut as a

1A all-stater.

Both the boys and girls 1A team championships were dominated by private schools, with three of the top four teams in each.

The game of the week in football was Pec-Durand’s win over LeanWinslow. It snapped an 18-game conference winning streak the Panthers had and was also a feel-good story.

Pec-Durand had to join forces as their respective programs were crumbling, while Le-Win has become the big bad wolf of the NUIC. The IHSA has a weekly playoff outlook each week and here is an interesting tidbit. With 404 students, Oregon is listed in 2A, while Pec-Durand with 438 is 3A. The current cut-off between the two classes is 425.

If Oregon continues stay in 2A in next few years and get the necessary five wins to qualify, they would be very competitive. One team currently in 2A and someone very familiar to Oregon is undefeated Wilmington, who like Oregon had always been 3A. With so many schools going to 8-man, the enrollment levels in all the

The Steamers scored the first 10 points of the game. Dykstra hit Mason for a 23-yard score on Fulton’s second drive, then Endi Qunaj capped off the next drive with a 37-yard field goal.

Forreston answered with 8:37 left in the first half. A 13-play, 64-yard drive burned four minutes off the clock, with Dyson finding Matthew Beltran for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Fulton answered with another touchdown pass. One play after Mason made a toe-tapping catch on the sideline for a first down, Dykstra found Keegan VanKampen for a 42-yard score to make it 17-8.

Forreston put together another long drive at the end of the half. A 14-play, 50-yard drive led to Beltran plunging in from 3 yards out on fourth down, cutting Fulton’s lead to 17-14 with 21 seconds left in the half.

Brady Wolber had a 71-yard touchdown on his only carry of the game. Other than the sectional, the big cross-country meet locally is the Columbus Day Amboy Invite. In the first time in its 48-year history, the home team won the boys race.

As usual, it was the Winnebago girls showing the rest of the star-studded field why they are highly favored to repeat as 1A state champs.

With thunderstorms teetering around the area, credit to meet organizers for getting event in. At least it wasn’t snow they were contending with.
