We are nearing the end of the first quarter at school. Each day, I am amazed at how fast the hours and days have gone. I almost always have lessons that are not completed and that are left for the next day. I am always excited to go back and try again. I am hoping that feeling keeps growing.

Our men’s breakfast group did not meet this last Saturday, however, our women’s breakfast group is planning on meeting this Saturday. I am very excited to be the host since I will have a few days off from school.

This afternoon I had many plans to complete projects for school for a few upcoming lessons. My office setup requires an active Wi-Fi connection to work my computer, printer, and my television. I really don’t need the television for working, but it does make for good company.

Over the past couple of days, I have had trouble with my signal. I anticipated this happening and had purchased a new router. I installed the new device and found I needed help. I called my internet provider which started a very long and frustrating afternoon.

It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago when we didn’t worry about the internet or computers to connect with others. Now, we rely on good signals for our work, entertainment, and to get in touch with those around us.

Thankfully, we have a direct connection to one that matters most. There is no need for cables and equipment to reach out to God. The connection is direct and always available. He knows our needs and our wants.

We can even reach out to Him when we are frustrated with the internet connection. He understands everything we are going through. He is ready to listen to the sorrows and the celebrations.

If that connection has not been made in awhile, God is still there and ready to listen. His love has made it so we can always turn to Him. Our connection to Him is working, every day, without interruption.

I hope to see you next week in our little church in the country. Come and join us for a time of praise, worship, and connection. We look forward to spending time with you and your family.

Our faith reminds us that the long summer days will return again. Each day and each season is a new beginning. For these blessings, we are grateful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Martha Johannson. Martha also shares our Moments for Missions, starting today. This Sunday marks the first of many for Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout. We welcomed Suzanne and her husband, Mark, to our church family.

Suzanne and Mark made the move to Pine Creek from Iowa this week. They are a welcome addition to our community.

This past Saturday morning, I attended the homecoming game in Forreston, at the request of one of my students. It has been several years since I watched a high school football game. The team, cheerleaders, dance team, and band did a fantastic job.

After the game, I traveled over to Oregon to visit the craft fair at Autumn on Parade and to see my Aunt Bobbi

Suzanne is a teacher, ordained minister, wife, and mother of one adult son and two beautiful grandsons. In her spare time she enjoys painting, photography and hand-

crafts, writing, walking, gardening and conversation with others.

Through serving as a pastor in this community, she hopes to use the gifts given her to help others come to know God, to grow in relationship with God, to feel and know the presence of the indwelling Christ, and to create communities of wholeness and justice in the Way of Jesus.

Her passion is supporting and nurturing transformation of individuals and congregations while finding joy in helping others embrace their own giftedness and use it to

Teaching mathematics was her passion for 19 years at the high school level before entering the ministry. She has been a pastor for the past 18 years basically in the Des Moines area.

Rally against child abuse planned in memory of Oregon boy A “Rally Against Child Abuse in Memory of Nathaniel” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Nathaniel Burton was 7 when he died Feb. 17 at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

His mother, Sarah Lyn Safranek, 34, of Oregon, is accused of suffocating him in their Oregon home. He also suffered

a ruptured liver.

Safranek was arrested April 21 and pleaded not guilty May 5 to five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child.

She is in Ogle County Jail on $2 million bond. Her next pretrial hearing is Nov. 10 in Ogle County Court.

The rally will start with a parade of semis and other trucks that starts and ends at the Blackhawk Center parking lot, 1101 Jefferson St., where there will be vendors, a 50-50 raffle, a TV raffle and raffles of items from local businesses. Winners need not be present.

Route 26 parking restrictions in Polo in the works City attorney to draft ordinance banning parking between Colden, Locust streets

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — Emotions ran high Monday as a proponent of homeowner rights butted heads with Polo City Council members over a proposed parking ban on part of Illinois Route 26 through town.

Council members decided to direct City Attorney M. Thomas Suits to draft an ordinance prohibiting parking on Division Avenue — the name of Route 26 within city limits — between Colden and Locust streets.

Passing an ordinance requires a first and second reading, City Clerk Sydney Bartelt said on Tuesday. That means the earliest the ban could be approved is Nov. 1.

Several council members cited

safety as their primary reason for seeking the ban.

“I don’t want this to affect anyone’s business here, but … I’ve seen these semis stopped up here on this hill,” Alderperson Randy Schoon said. “I am telling you now, that is not good.”

As an example of a potential danger, Schoon said he saw people parking on Route 26 from Monday morning as Moring Disposal was picking up trash around 5 a.m. He said the truck was at an angle, with the rear end hanging out in the driving lane because a parked car was in the way of the driver getting to the trash can.

Alderperson Beth Sundman line-ofsight was being impacted when vehicles attempt to leave Casey’s, and Mayor Doug Knapp recalled a car near his property at 601 S. Division Ave. that was hit twice while parked on the highway.

But John Johnson, a resident of 907 S. Division Ave., voiced concerns over loss of home value and noted that there are residences in the middle of blocks with no driveway which would force them to park on a side street. He also said parking for visitors would be

impacted and that there was no written noticed mailed to residents about the proposed change.

Schoon countered that no change had yet been made and that meeting agendas are available on city hall’s door. Bartelt said a meeting notice is published in the newspaper and the agenda is available the city’s website.

Johnson said that those types of notifications are not easily accessible to senior citizens or people who are computer illiterate.

“You have the moral obligation to let people know if you’re going take their rights away,” Johnson said.

“We’re all a bunch of low-lifes? Is that what you’re saying?” Schoon responded.

“I need you to look up moral obligation, moral integrity,” Johnson shot back. “You let people know if you’re going to start taking our rights. If you’re going to do something that affects people, you at least have the courtesy to let them know.”

Sending letters or hand-delivering a notice about every action the council takes isn’t feasible, Suits said. On top of the monetary cost, the city doesn’t

P have the time or the personnel to do such a thing, Suits said.

Marco Nutrition owner Mark LeFevre said he would prefer there be no parking, or only short-term parking in front of his business, located at 103 N. Division Ave. “They make us put our garbage cans on the street, [and] these people park there before they even come,” LeFevre said.

Suits was directed to include in the ordinance permission for 30-minute parking in front of Northern Illinois TV, located at 121 North Division Ave., and Marco Nutrition.

WARRENVILLE – Exelon Generation issued a news release Wednesday stating it is “moving quickly to fill 650 vacant positions across the state and jumpstart more than $300 million in capital projects over the next five years” at its Illinois nuclear stations.

The move comes after the Illinois General Assembly passed sweeping clean energy legislation earlier this month.

“With this landmark legislation in place, we are moving quickly to restaff and refuel all of our nuclear plants for 24/7 operation, producing carbon-free, baseload electricity for more than 10 million homes and businesses,” Exelon Generation Chief Nuclear Officer Dave Rhoades said. “These plants are not only important for the clean energy they produce, but they are massive economic engines for their local communities, contributing more than $1.6 billion to Illinois’ GDP each year.”

Byron Station immediately began refueling Unit 1 after Gov. JB Pritzker signed the clean energy legislation Sept. 17.

“While the nuclear support provision represents less than 20 percent of the cost of the overall legislation in the coming years, it has an outsized impact on the state’s climate and economic goals. Saving the plants preserves twothirds of the state’s clean energy, avoids a 70 percent rise in emissions, protects 28,000 direct and indirect jobs, and prevents a $480 million increase in annual energy prices for consumers,” Rhoades said in the release.

“With the legislation having taken effect, Byron Station plans to invest more than $140 million into the plant in the next five years on projects overhauling a main generator, replacing large transformers, upgrading a fiber optic control system and replacing various pumps, motors and piping in the plant. Most of the projects will occur during refueling outages starting next year that will include more than 1,500 electricians, pipe fitters, welders, carpenters and other trades people coming to Byron from across Illinois to perform the work,” Rhoades said in the release.

“We’re incredibly pleased to see all the union contract workers at Byron Station helping the full-time employees refuel Unit 1,” Byron Mayor John Rickard said. “It would have been terrible for the environment and devastating for our community had the plant

been allowed to shut down. We’re relieved the plant gets to continue supporting our community with jobs, philanthropy and tax funding for our schools and essential services, while producing clean energy at a time when clean energy is needed more than ever.”

Pritzker was joined by environmental and social justice activists, union representatives and lawmakers from both parties when he signed the law that he said aims to phase out carbon emissions from the energy sector by 2045 while diversifying the renewable energy workforce. He described the energy bill, Senate Bill 2408, as “the most significant step Illinois has taken in a generation toward a reliable, renewable, affordable and clean energy future.”

Continued from page 5 Specifically, the bill forces fossil fuel plants offline between 2030 and 2045, depending on the source and carbon emissions level, although the Illinois Commerce Commission, Illinois Power Agency and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency would have the authority to alter plant closure timelines in order to ensure energy grid reliability.

It subsidizes three nuclear plants with $694 million paid over a period of five years, and increases subsidies for renewable energy by more than $350 million annually. The latter is the driving piece in an effort to increase state’s renewables output from 7% to 8% of the energy mix currently to 40% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

Another goal aims for 100% carbon-free energy by 2050, elevating the importance of the nuclear plants, which will continue to operate as a result of the massive subsidy.

Estimates for the cost of the bill have ranged from $3 or $4 monthly added to ratepayer bills, according to the Citizens Utility Board, to $15, according to senior advocacy group AARP. In terms of percentages, bill sponsor Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, said residential electric bills would increase by about 3% to 4%, commercial bills by

Dresden’s Unit 2 refueling outage will occur in November, and the station has nearly $170 million in capital projects planned over the next five years, including upgrades to six feedwater heat exchange vessels, significant refurbishment of a main generator, electrical component overhauls,

replacement of closed cooling piping and revamping nuclear instrumentation circuit components. As with Byron, the work on these projects will be performed during refueling outages by union personnel.

“Exelon refueling outages put thousands of people to work in Illinois, providing jobs to skilled local and regional union and tradespeople,” IBEW Local 15 President and Business Manager Terry McGoldrick said. “Keeping these plants open was the right decision, and I’m pleased the General Assembly made this investment in the future of our workforce, our communities and our nuclear plants. Byron and Dresden will also soon begin the first of multiple new training classes for dozens of licensed operators who will become the next generation of employees operating the plants and helping to keep our state’s air clean.”

H

ow do you hunt for Native American villages that might have been on your property thousands of years ago?

I just happened to have a conversation with our former librarian, Gail about that time and she remembered a search that went on many years ago for that very thing.

Someone from Rochelle starting building a house and during the digging they uncovered a number of Native American artifacts. They had to stop and contact Springfield for information on villages of the past.

The search led to Polo and a rare plat book with information written into it on old villages.

Gail came up and we started at the museum with all of our plat books.

We found nothing and then went to the library to continue our search.

The rare old plat book still remained elusive and yet different ones did seem to remember something that was out of the ordinary.

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf About that time Anne Blough Gaertner gave me a phone call to tell me they were in Polo and could we get together to look over her father’s collection of Native American memorabilia. The next day Mike, Beth, and I headed for the country to see Dale’s very old collection. But first they said, “Come over here to this table and see this old map.”

I am always amazed how things turn up because as we unrolled the map, there it was. A very old page from a rare plat book with all the Native American villages penciled in and the key up in the corner as Gail remembered.

Amazing what your mind tucks away. There in red were all these little tepees all over Ogle County. What

a find!

The bottom of the map had written in, “Mrs. Avery Jones’ father did this.” Who was Mrs. Avery Jones?

I came back to the museum with the map and called Linda my research person. By the next day she had all the information. The parents of Mrs. Jones were Edith and Frank Osborn.

Frank in 1956 was 90 years old and an authority on Native American villages. He was still speaking all over at 90! He lived to be 100 years old.

Frank was President Emeritus of the Rockford Archaeological Society and was still a very busy person finding all these old villages. Bless his heart. He lived near Middle Creek.

Later when I was talking to Maggie Henning, she told me Mr. and Mrs. Avery Jones had an antique shop in Leaf River. She would go there with her father years ago.

The map was from a rare plat book done in 1911 by a Rockford firm for Winnebago and Ogle County. This

was a totally different company that did all the plat books. It has now been copied by Marty Cox and we have copies for Ogle County Historical Society, the Blough Family, our library, and our museum.

Recently Michal, from Ogle County Historical Society, Linda, Beth, and I gathered again at our museum.

Michal told us that other people have done some maps also of Native American villages and she has some of that information.

Beth and I will go over and continue with our research to see what others have uncovered.

Let me know if you have realized that you have had a Native American village on your property from what you have found in the way of artifacts over the years.

AOP attendees, vendors glad to be back in 2021 Some note different feel to festivalth year, cite COVID-19 as reason why

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — It didn’t feel like fall, but that didn’t matter to those who turned out for the return of Autumn on Parade.

With temperatures in the mid-80s and high humidity, the weather didn’t feel very fall-like, but that didn’t matter to the steady crowd who walked around the 150-plus booths located on the lawn of the old Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets.

The popular festival ran Oct. 2-3 and took up much of downtown Oregon.

The theme, “Rockin’ 50 Years,” celebrated the event’s 50th anniversary a year late after the COVID-19 pandemic forced a hiatus in 2020.

“It’s amazing,” said Barb Huggins, of Fulton, who was attending Autumn on Parade for the first time. “I love all the food vendors and I love the things that people make.”

Her friend, Patti Damhoff, responded by pointing to the north side of the Ogle County Courthouse lawn and saying, “You just wait. We’ve got to go all the way down over there.”

The rain chain Huggins purchased was just one of the hundreds of items being sold by more than 150 booths set up on the courthouse lawn and the surrounding streets. Other wares included ornamental produce, locally produced honey, jewelry, soaps, candles, antiques, seasonal items and homemade pies.

There were a lot more sellers this year, said Damhoff, of Fulton, who has been coming to Autumn on Parade for 30 years. However, in her opinion, there were fewer attendees.

“Usually, it’s so packed you can’t walk,” she said. “But I think people are scared of COVID. It makes a difference.”

Still, business was steady for Ms. Mint owner Kate Gross, of Franklin Grove, who was in her fifth year selling at Autumn on Parade.

“I’ve had a lot of excited customers that I was here,” said Gross, who sells handmade headbands and scrunchies.

“That felt good … to have those people.”

One thing she said she loves about Autumn on Parade is that it’s a “genuine craft fair” where only handmade

OREGON — Autumn on Parade was back with a smashing success last weekend after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 2020 event’s cancellation.

The theme of the two-day festival which was spread across much of downtown Oregon was “Rockin’ 50 Years” in honor of its 50th anniversary.

“I think it went very well overall,” Autumn on Parade Board President Marseyne Snow said. “We had a tremendous crowd both days. The weather was actually perfect.”

There was a ton of positive feedback, particularly about the new food court setup, the Harvest Time Parade and the beer garden, she said. People just loved being able to do things again, Snow said.

This year was the first time Autumn on Parade featured a beer garden, and attendees seemed to enjoy the music from the live band that spilled over into the food court, Snow said. The food court was expanded from its previous confines of Jefferson Street to include the parking lot of the former Ogle County Jail.

Continued from page 8 items are allowed. Shoppers also appreciate it, because it allows them to come and find treasures, Gross said. Most events now have direct sellers as well as handmade crafts, and it changes the vibe, she said.

Gross said, overall, the festival was good and seemed to be back to normal after the year off.

On the other hand, Judy Hodgin, a vendor out of Apple River, Illinois, felt things seemed different. Hodgin owns Baskets by Judy and has participated in Autumn on Parade intermittently for 15 years, depending on her schedule.

“In my own mind, it appears that people really want to be out and about,” she said while weaving a basket.

“Everybody seems to be very kind and very considerate. … People buy something and if they need some change, they’ll say, ‘Oh, just forget the change’ and that’s never happened before.

“But it is different, because our whole lives are different,” Hodgin said.

be in line and stuff,” she said. “Before, it got congested and [this year] it was just really, really nice.”

When it comes to figuring out how many people attended Autumn on Parade, there’s no real way to do that, Snow said.

There is no gated entrance the festival’s main events are free. Snow said attendance appeared to be at least equal to previous years.

“All I can say is, it was wall-to-wall people Sunday during the parade,” she said.

With just more than 100 entries, the Harvest Time Parade lasted nearly two hours. Paid entertainment acts for 2021 included The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Chicago Drill Team. Local marching bands, queens, Scout groups, and local floats also took part in this year’s parade.

Another big attraction was two Atlantic giant pumpkins, raised by Theresa and Keith Miller, of Stillman Valley, weighing 871.5 and 701.6 pounds.

Adults and children really enjoyed taking pictures with the pumpkins which were displayed on the courthouse square.

Children also enjoyed the Fun Zone by the Coliseum, which was free to all this year and included a petting zoo, bouncy inflatables on both days, and a magic show on Saturday.

“They actually let the kids go right in and let them pet them [the animals],” Snow said. “These kids were in there and just having a ball with the animals.”

The car show on Saturday had 120 vehicles on display and the tractor classic had around 50 antique tractors attend.

“I grew up in the Mt. Morris and Oregon area and I try and come back each year for Autumn on Parade,” said Fred Dunivan, of Paragold, Arkansas, as he visited the Focus House Car Show at Oregon Park East on Saturday. “This is great.”

Preparing for all the activities Autumn on Parade offers went a little slow at the start, but it all worked out, Snow said, noting that the festival is organized and conducted by an all-volunteer committee.

“We meet year round to plan everything,” she said.

Vendors, who pay a fee to be part of the festival, were eager to reserve a space for this year’s farmers market and the food court, Snow said.

“I think we started out a little slow, because we were a little skeptical if we would be able to have it,” Snow said.

“Once we got to see the path that we would be able to have it, everybody started pitching in and made it work.”

The winner of the 60/40 raffle was Chris Mueller of Dixon. He won $12,078 before taxes.

Next year’s event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2.

Oregon’s Hackman, Rock Falls team head to state

eingles@shawmedia.com KEWANEE – The Rock Falls girls golf team is off to state after taking third at Monday’s Class 1A Geneseo Sectional at Kewanee Dunes, shooting a 349 to beat fourth-place Geneseo (353) by four strokes.

Boylan won the sectional title with a 325. Peoria Notre Dame took second (336).

Eureka’s Allison Pacocha was the individual champion, shooting a 73. Her back-nine 37 was capped off by a par on the 290yard, par-4 18th to avoid a fiveway playoff.

One of the players who awaited among the group with a two-overpar 74 was Rock Falls’ Megan Fiorini. When she finished at No. 18, she sat tied with a pair of Boylan golfers, Ella Greenberg and Eva Greenberg, for the clubhouse lead, but two golfers were still on the course with a chance to beat them: Pacocha and Illinois Valley Central’s Elaine Grant. In the sec-

ond-to-last group, Grant, who had been playing even-par up to that point, bogeyed No. 18. Moments later in the next foursome, Pacocha, needing par to win, sank her par putt.

“I feel OK, but not entirely, because on No. 17 I had a double, missed a short putt, which took me out of it,” Fiorini said.

Fiorini opened her round with a bogey on the 280-yard par-4 No. 1, but immediately responded with a birdie on the following hole and another at No. 4 to move to 1-under for the day. She then made par on five consecutive holes to make the turn in 35.

“I was just trying to take it one shot at a time, not trying to play the perfect shot,” she said, “just to where I could get it in fairway, get it in play. I put some pitch shots close, to within three feet, made that, that was nice.”

Fiorini briefly sat tied for the lead, when West Hancock’s Bliss Martin, playing a few groups behind her, bogeyed No. 8 to fall to 1-under-par. But the Rock Falls

sophomore gave that stroke back moments later with a bogey of her own on No. 10.

The Rockets also got an 88 from Ellie Wasson. She struggled with an eight on No. 8, a 322-yard par-4, but then followed that up with a par on No. 9. She made par again on No. 12, then another on No. 14, where she caught a bit of a break.

The green of the 328-yard par-4 is guarded by a bunker short and to the left. Wasson’s second shot seemed headed straight for that bunker, but hit a rake in front of the bunker and careened off towards the green. From there, she was able to chip on and make a short putt.

Lauren Tupper shot a 91, which saw her make par on two of the par-3s, No. 6 and No. 13.

“My chipping was working well today. My tee shots were a lot better than they’ve been playing,” Tupper said.

The Rockets move on to the state finals by way of finishing one spot better at the sectional than they did a year ago. In 2020, playing on their home course, Rock Falls took fourth at the sectional with a 349, two strokes behind Peoria Notre Dame.

Oregon’s Ava Hackman hit a few bumps on the front nine, then breezed through the back nine. She shot a 79 to claim a ticket to state.

“I think that the 8 [on No. 7] made me mad, so I thought, ‘I have to keep going,’” she said. “I’m glad I came back from that.”

The triple bogey on No. 7 left her making the turn in 42, and she opened her back nine with another bogey on the par-4 No. 10. But back-to-back pars

on Nos. 11 and 12, and a birdie on No. 15 got her on track, and she fired par on the final three holes.

“My chipping and my putting, that was the key today,” she said.

For Dixon sophomore Katie Drew, her round unfolded nearly the opposite of Hackman’s. Drew put together a strong front nine, shooting a 38 which included a birdie on the par-3 No. 3, then had issues on the back nine.

“I was having misses, but my misses weren’t what they’ve been,” she said.

“They were green-side misses, so I was still able to putt most of my misses.”

She is through to state, but not by much. Her 81 made her the 10th and final individual qualifier.

Polo’s Kamryn Stockton saw her postseason come to an end with a 99.

Par on three holes in the front nine helped her make the turn in 47, but a pair of double bogeys immediately after the turn led to a 52 on the back nine.

Cross country Dannhorn wins at Park West: Oregon freshman Ella Dannhorn raced to a first-place finish on her home course with a time of 23:05.0.

Dannhorn beat second-place Angela Meiners from Durand by more than 20 seconds.

As a team, the Hawks were fourth with 83 points. Stockton won the team crown with 46.

Oregon’s Ellen Hodson was 10th with a time of 26:57.8. Valerie Nyderek was 19th with a time of 28:59.8.

In the boys race, Oregon had four runners: Christopher Smith was 13th (23:20.9), Aidan Guida was 18th (23:53.10), Isaac Brooks was 20th (25:43.50), and Bryan Immel was 24th (21:01.40). Durand was the only school to field a full team, while Rockford Lutheran’s Alessandro Bellini won the race in 18:03.10.

Oregon got a 93 from Cassandra Nyderek, who fell in a playoff for the 10th spot to Rockford Lutheran’s Kristin Rundle. Lena Trampel shot a 95.

Boys golf Oregon’s season ends at Algonquin: The

Oregon Hawks were unable to get any golfers out of the Class 1A Elgin Academy Regional.

Isaac Kaltenbrun had the top score for the Hawks with a 102. Logan Sarver and Brady Davis each shot a 103. Jared Glendenning shot a 112, Kyler Early a 113, and Brogan Wilkinson a 114.

As a team, the Hawks were in 12th with a 420. Byron was the team champion with a 323, beating Elgin Academy by two strokes.

Westminster Christian’s Jackson Hulsey was the individual champion, shooting a 72.

Volleyball Oregon def. Stillman Valley 25-18, 25-18: The Hawks handled the Cardinals in a Big Northern match on the road.

Jenae Bothe had 12 kills, five digs and an ace, while Ava Wight added three kills, 13 digs and three aces. Kenna Wubbena chipped in four kills ands four digs for Oregon.

Fulton def. Forreston 25-21, 25-21: Fulton downed the Lady Cardinals in Tuesday action. Kara Erdmann had 21 digs for Forreston and Jaiden Schneiderman had seven kills Soccer Oregon 3, DePue-Hall 3: The Hawks forged a tie at Oregon Park West, with a pair of goals from Joey Gelander.

Jacob Vegliando added a goal and an assists for Oregon (7-11-2), and Liam Dickson-Harriett also dished an assist.

Oregon 1, Kewanee 0: Joey Gelander scored the game’s lone goal as the Hawks won a nonconference game at Oregon Park West.

Football Genoa-Kingston 47, Oregon 0:The Cogs shut out the Hawks behind seven rushing touchdowns by six different rushers.

Daniel Dominguez led Oregon’s offense with 14 carries for 76 yards.

Chase Engel had 17 carries for 127 yards for the Cogs.

Forreston 56, East Dubuque 20: The Cardinals rushed for 411 yards and eight touchdowns to win an NUIC game at home Saturday afternoon.

Jacob Fiorello ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries, and Matthew Beltran had 136 yards and a score on seven rushes. Half of Kaleb Sanders’ six carries went for touchdowns, and Devonte King-Black also had a touchdown run, as 10 different Cardinals carried the ball for positive yards.

Logan Dyson was 2-for-4 passing for 51 yards, with Fiorello and Beltran each snagging a reception. Forreston led 14-0 after one quarter, 36-6 at halftime, and 50-14 after three quarters.

Defensively, Forreston limited East Dubuque to 4 rushing yards in the first half, and held the Warriors to 79 yards on the ground for the game. The Cardinals also intercepted a pass.

East Dubuque quarterback Trey Bowman completed 12 of 22 passes for 154 yards and two touchdown, both to Zach Freiberger, who finished with nine catches for 90 yards.

It was a pleasure to be a ‘just a fan’ at Rochelle game

I

n the interest of full disclosure, I have not been in the employ of the newspaper for over a year.

When the pandemic hit, I was placed on furlough and never brought back.

Nonetheless, I’m still allowed to contribute content on a gratis basis without any obligation to cover sporting events.

Still it felt a bit strange to accompany my mother to Rochelle’s homecoming game this last Friday and sit in the stands like a regular fan. In fact, several people asked where my reporter’s notebook was, starting with Ron and Mardelle Kennay, who were there to watch a family member.

It was about 20 years ago, I was covering their son Jeremy wrestle and play football at Oregon and those relationships stay with you.

It was a pleasure to sit next to the Gary Tarvestad family. This is a multi-generational affair that has been cheering on the Hubs for decades.

In light of complaints about fans that criticize coaches and officials, we need more people like Gary and his

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert clan that humbly supports an athletic program, win or lose without rancor.

In light of inappropriate behavior he witnessed at football game, LaSalle-Peru superintendent Steve Wobrelski went as far to address a letter on social media to all parents and fans.

He said berating or confronting coaches and screaming/swearing at officials will not be tolerated and offenders will be ejected from games and may be denied admission to school events for up to a year.

My original plan was to be in Polo instead of Rochelle. Not because it was going to be a good game with woeful River Ridge, but to catch up with old friends.

And as luck had it, I ran into to some of those same Polo pals a couple days later as they sold cheesecakes for the Knights of Columbus at Autumn-on-Parade.

On a side note, it was neat to see Oregon’s basketball team and wrestlers hosting food booths, as well. Let these kids know what it means to earn money for the program instead of handing it to them.

Though is was more like a glorified scrimmage against River Ridge, Polo needed to be back on the field after a 2-week absence due to opposing teams having Covid. It’s boring staying home on a Friday night with no one to play.

With Milledgeville’s decisive win over previously unbeaten Orangeville, could it be that Polo and the Missiles are the top two teams in 8-man ball?

We will earn a lot more about Polo when they host always-dangerous Freeport Aquin in the last game of the regular season. Getting better each week, the Bulldogs are learning the nuances of playing 8-man compared to 11-man, where they were ranked No. 1 in the state this past spring.

Ashton-Franklin Center called it quits after five games of 8-man football, citing lack of personnel. Since

Justin Ebert took them to the 1A quarterfinals in 2006, AFC has only had one winning season and have not won a game since 2018.

For the third week in a row, Forreston topped the 50-point mark, but face three sturdy tests in a row with Fulton, Gibson City and Le-Win. I feel bad for not making a Forreston game yet this year, but plan to be there for a Saturday afternoon game with Gibson City.

Two weeks ago, I had my camping gear loaded up for an overnighter in the Palisades, with a scenic trip north to Galena to see the Cardinals play.

Rain wiped that idea out.

Instead, it was a short walk to Landers-Loomis Field to see Oregon and Rockford Lutheran play in a game labeled by 95.7FM’s Mark Herman as one of the most bizarre he’s seen in 21 years of broadcasting with partner Sam Ramirez.

treynolds@shawmedia.com POLO – Any worries about the Polo football team showing any rust after not playing games the last two weeks were gone less than halfway through the first quarter on Oct. 1.

The Marcos scored on their first six possessions, then backups tacked on three more touchdowns after halftime in a 66-6 Homecoming win over River Ridge.

“We were hungry to play,” senior lineman Wayde Reimer. “The key was to come out strong, come out hard, come out fast. We wanted to go in, get the job done, and get out, and we did that.”

Polo (6-0) hadn’t hit the field under the Friday night lights since a Week 3 win over Amboy on Sept. 10. Both its Week 4 and Week 5 opponents were forced to forfeit due to COVID issues, and the Marcos were unable to find replacement opponents.

But that didn’t seem to matter once the game started. Polo recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff, and Brock Soltow scored from 1 yard out seven plays later for a 8-0 lead less

than four minutes into the game.

After the Marcos forced a threeand-out, Soltow returned the punt 43 yards to the River Ridge 41, then covered the rest of the distance to the end zone on the next play for a 16-0 lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

The Wildcats (2-4) then turned it over on downs after Polo forced a fourth-down incompletion, and Avery Grenoble ran 22 yards on first down to set up Tyler Merdian’s 19-yard touchdown run with 3:01 left in the opening period.

Sept. 29 Amber L. Talab, 41, of Rochelle, was arrested at 3:40 p.m. for driving while license suspended. This violation occurred in the 200 block of East Washington Street.

Talab was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 1 Alicia L. Bushman, 48, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:31 p.m. on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant for obstructing a court order. Bushman was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 2 Ryan A. Fenton, 34, of Oregon, was arrested at 2:25 p.m. for driving while license revoked, Fenton also had an outstanding Ogle County warrant that he was arrested for.

A passenger in the vehicle Fenton was driving, Savanna M. Garza, 32, of Sterling, was arrested on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant for failure to appear. Garza was also charged with unlawful possession of cannabis as a passenger.

Both Fenton and Garza were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 200 block of S. 4th Street.

At 8:01 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 800 block of W. Washiongton Street resulting in the arrest of Timothy P. Prehn, Jr., 41, of Oregon, for aggravated domestic battery. Prehn was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 3 Jeffery A. Lawson, 56, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 4:43 a.m. for speeding, 43 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Eleven parking ticket and seven verbal warnings issued Sept. 27 - Oct. 3.

State Police announces activity for September

llinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for September.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 537 citations, 676 written warnings, and made 9 criminal arrests during the month of September.

Speeding accounted for 296 citations, 56 citations were issued for occupant restraint

violations, and 50 citations were issued for distracted driving violations. There were 23 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/revoked.

Troopers investigated 11 traffic crashes, assisted 114 motorists, and conducted 187 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 14 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were seven arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in September.

POLO POLICE Sept. 30 Patrick J. Siepka, 26, Franklin Grove, was issued a citation at 5:58 p.m. for no valid

driver’s license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Siepka was released on an I-Bond.

FORRESTON POLICE Oct. 1 The Forreston Police Department along with the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department arrested David Crocker on an outstanding Ogle County warrant. Crocker’s warrant was for aggravated battery, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and felony driving on a

revoked driver’s license.

Crocker was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held on a $100,000 bond.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Sept. 28 At approximately 8:50 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash with no injuries at the intersection of Kennedy Hill and Woodburn roads. After an investigation, Jonathan Mcclanahan, 34, of Winnebago, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Mcclanahan also was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Mcclanahan was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Ryan Pearcy, 26, of Byron, was arrested at approximately 11:04 p.m. in the 8000 block of Illinois Route 2 for four counts of possession of controlled substance (cocaine, MDMA, LSD and psychedelic mushrooms) and improper cannabis container/driver. Pearcy also was cited for improper plate attachment. Pearcy was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 29 At approximately 4 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash at the

After an investigation, it was found Chase Schott, 20, of Monroe Center, was traveling eastbound into Creston and didn’t realize a motorcycle traveling in front of him was turning south onto Main Street. Schott applied the breaks causing his vehicle to skid to the right shoulder before overcorrecting and crossing both lanes of traffic striking an oncoming car driven by Daniel Calderon, 19, of Rochelle. Calderon was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for injuries.

Schott was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage. Schott was released from the scene and provided a future court appearance.

Roman Martinez, 27, of Rochelle deputies was arrested at 9:19 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Illinois Route 64 and Skare Road for speeding, 71 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Martinez also was issued a citation for speeding. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Daniel P. Etnyre, 83, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021.

Born in Rockford, IL and raised in Oregon, IL, he was the son of the late Samuel R. and Georgene Ferguson Etnyre. He graduated from Oregon High School and attended the University of Colorado.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, Dan was the Mid-Atlantic Sales Manager for E.D. Etnyre & Co., his family’s road-building equipment manufacturing and distributing company.

Following his time with the Etnyre Company, he remained in sales before retiring in 2015.

In his early years, Dan was a scratch golfer, and he continued to have a lifelong interest in golf. He enjoyed all sports and was a committed Philadelphia Phillies and Penn State Football fan. Spending an afternoon

He will be remembered for his mischievous smile, deep belly laugh, generosity, and his sincere devotion to his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Etnyre Williams and his sister, Bitsy Hunter.

He is survived by his children, Daniel Etnyre, Jr., Kim Etnyre, Michael Etnyre, Wendy Lewis, and Jennifer Pradziad and her husband John, his sister, Ginger Smalley, his ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

At approximately 9:19 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the intersection of GermanChurch and Limerick roads for reports of a vehicle in a ditch. Deputies were advised that the vehicle was traveling through a bean field before becoming stuck in the ditch. After an investigation, deputies arrested Thera N. Anspach, 38, of Byron, for driving under the influence of alcohol and unlawful possession of cannabis/driver.

Deputies also arrested passenger Charles R. Gallagher, 43, of Oregon, for unlawful possession of cannabis/passenger. Both Anspach and Gallager were cited for open container of alcohol and were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 30 Osvaldo Chavez, 23, of Sterling, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after Ogle County deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 4500 block of Lowell Park Road for speeding 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Chavez also as cited for speeding and

operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Chavez was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 1 Ogle County deputies and Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Department were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 72 near Moulton Road. After an investigation, deputies learned an eastbound Kia SUV operated by Jessica Harper-Wlodarczyk, 39, of Davis Junction, had struck a concrete barrier on the overpass.

Harper-Wlodarczyk was transported by Lynn-Scott-Rock ambulance to Rochelle Community Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries.

Harper-Wlodarczyk was arrested for driving under the influence and improper lane usage and was released on an I-Bond.

Oct. 2 At approximately 4:15 p.m., deputies stopped Jerome Huenefeld, 21, of Oregon, at Franklin and Third streets in Oregon.

After an investigation, Huenefeld was arrested for unlawful possession of

cannabis/driver and cited for no turn signal when required. Huenefeld was released on an I-Bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Ethan Greiner, 19, of Rockford, was arrested for driving on a suspended license and cited for speeding after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Illinois Route 251 for a speeding violation of 73 mph in a 55 mph zone. Greiner was released at the scene on an I-Bond and given a court date to appear.

Oct. 3 At approximately 1:40 a.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash with no injuries in the 1100 block of East Mud Creek Road. After an investigation, Jorge Carreno, 34, of Byron, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Carreno also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Deputies assisted a motorist broken down

on the southbound exit ramp of Interstate 39 at Illinois Route 38 at approximately 1:40 p.m. While on the scene, deputies found the driver, Fernando Macias-Ramirez, 33, of Kansas City, Missouri, did not not possess a valid driver’s license. Macias-Ramirez was arrested and cited for no valid license and no valid registration. Macias-Ramirez was issued a $2,500 I-Bond and provided a return court date.

At approximately 9:07 p.m., deputies stopped Timothy Smith, 54, of Oregon, near the intersection of Washington and 7th streets in Oregon. Smith was arrested for driving while license revoked and an outstanding Ogle County warrant. Smith also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper use of registration. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 4 Leticia Bondurant, 31, of Montgomery, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped on Interstate 39 near Rochelle for speeding. Bondurant was transported to the Ogle County Jail.
