By KAREN MERLAK We say our goodbyes to another beautiful month. The summer season has been wonderful for the fields, flowers and everything that grows. We give thanks for God’s blessings and for His presence in our times of need. Our god is an awesome God. This morning in church, we were greeted by Rose Avey. James Hopkins was our worship leader during the morning prayer. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her morning message. Every week, we join in singing and fellowship.

After church, Pastor Suzanne invited everyone to stay for lunch and for a discussion about our church’s mission. Suzanne has provided lots of information to build a strong foundation for our church. We continue to look forward to our future.

It has been a couple of weeks since I have driven my dear friend, Jean Cunningham, home after church. We had a lovely visit during our car ride. We call ourselves a family because of the love we share with each other.

On Saturday, Don and Vicki Hay returned from a trip to Delaware to visit with their son, Mackenzie Hay, his wife Shea, and their children, Reef, Ellis, Remy, and Pippin. The family took time to visit

Rehoboth Beach, including walking along the boardwalk and amusement park.

Most of the time spent in Delaware, Don and Vicki enjoyed being grandparents, including having a game day, taking a jeep ride on the beach, and having delicious meals together. Everyone treasured the time together before the grandchildren headed off to church camp.

On Friday, I met my friend Brooke for breakfast one last time. She has accepted a teaching position in Florida and moved to her new residence over the weekend.

Thanks to the many forms of communication available, we will easily keep in touch.

This past week, our district finished the final session of summer school. I am so glad for the extra time spent with my students. I will be working for just my parttime job for the next month while I prepare my classroom for the next school year.

I have always loved the start of the school year. When I was going to school, it was exciting to go and pick out our school supplies. As a parent, I gladly shopped with my children, too.

The excitement of meeting a new teacher and seeing friends added to the adventure.

Most of all, it was a chance to start fresh and learn new things. As a teacher, there is

so much to prepare for my students.

For my first year of teaching, I was unsure of what to expect. I had been in a classroom many times, but never in charge of everything. Over the school year, I not only made many mistakes, I learned many new skills.

This year, I am taking that knowledge and focusing on creating a great year for my new class of students. Jesus died on the cross to erase our mistakes. More importantly, we should be learning from them and using that new knowledge to do and be better.

Jesus is always with us and we will continue to be forgiven. As we learn from our mistakes, our confidence grows. We are able to more easily make the right decisions for ourselves. Our mistakes are wiped away, but their lessons remain with us and help us grow.

I hope to see you next Sunday at our church on Penn Corner Road. Come and join us for a time of worship, singing, and prayer. We gladly welcome you and your family to meet us in person or online on our Facebook page.

azoellner@shawmedia.com Temporary rumble strips have been installed on Lowell Park Road at its intersection with Pines Road.

More than 20 crashes have occurred at the intersection since 2009.

In a previous interview, Ogle County Engineer Jeremy Ciesiel said there are plans to install permanent rumble strips as part of the 2023 construction season.

“The cooperation of the property owners [near the intersection] by signing a petition made the process at lot easier to do,” Ciesiel said. “There was the concern about the proximity of the residents [to the rumble strips], but when they were in favor of it, we were able to move forward with it.”

From Jan. 1, 2009, to April 30 of this year, 21 crashes have occurred at the intersection located in rural Polo, according to a traffic study conducted by Ciesiel. Sixteen of them involved drivers on Lowell Park Road who either did not obey the stop signs or failed to yield to traffic on Pines Road after stopping.

The temporary rumble strips cost about $4,000, Ciesiel said. He expects the permanent rumble strips to cost $24,000 to $25,000, based on previous projects’ costs.

These temporary rumble strips will “be an experiment” because of the length of time they’re looking to keep them in place, Ciesiel said.

“To be honest, we’ve never had them up for more than a couple months,” he said. “I’m not sure how well it will hold up. I got a variety different than what we’ve had on previous projects in the hope we can keep them in place over the winter, but I’m not sure what a snowplow will do to them.”

It’s county fair week!

It’s fair time in Ogle County.

The 168th Ogle County Fair begins Wednesday, Aug. 3, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 7, at the fairgrounds, 440 N. Limekiln Road, one mile west of Oregon just north of Illinois 64.

Fairgoers will be treated to two new free ground shows this year, the Pirates of the Columbian Caribbean, featuring aerial acrobatics, and Wolves of the World, starring rescued wolves from around the globe.

The ground shows will take place every day of the fair. Other free shows include the Brian Holt Magic Show, chainsaw artist Dave Ferrell, and the strolling Ta-Da Robotics.

The fair began Aug. 3 with the 2022 Fair Queen Pageant at 5:30 p.m.

Traditional grandstand shows include truck and tractor pulls on Wednesday and Thursday, the Big Hat Rodeo on Friday, and the demolition derby on Saturday.

The Tri County Pullers will bring their mini-rod tractors to the fair for the first time on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m.

Exhibitors will show off their talents and hard work throughout the fair at the Open Show and Junior

Open Show in the Exhibit Building.

The 4-H Show also will be ongoing as well featuring a wide array of topics from traditional livestock, foods, vegetables and fruits, clothing and crafts, photography, floriculture to beekeeping, electricity, woodworking and computer science.

The fair’s $8 admission fee includes not only ground shows and exhibits but also unlimited carnival rides.

Children age 3 and younger get into the fair free but each will need a $4 wristband to ride at the carnival.

Wristbands are available at the gate.

Besides traditional fair foods, a pork chop dinner will be served by the Ogle County Pork Producers on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Music will be part of the fair as well with performances by local entertainers.

Burn N’ Bush will perform on Thursday, First Friday on Friday and Chip Messiner on Saturday. All shows are at 7 p.m. at the Lions Shelter.

The existing 98-year-old fire station, which originally served as a car dealership and farm implement service station, has outlived its usefulness, Fire Chief Rob Hough IV said. It was built in “a different time,” and features low ceilings and narrow overhead doors, is constructed with porous brick and doesn’t have space for outdoor work, he said.

“It’s not an environment conducive to safety, and that’s a big concern of ours,” Hough said.

Getting the historical museum in order is a top priority

W

ow!! The flag really does work. Lily hung it out last week as we prepared to spend some time getting things in order. It was not long until someone came in and said, “I saw your flag and had a bit of time to spend so I came in to see what you have in your museum.”

He stayed a while to look around and we also visited. He was impressed at what Polo has managed to keep in the way of our history of the area.

We put away the box of history on the Kable Band, which became the 129th Regimental Infantry Band many years ago. Dick Bentley had saved all the history and I had sorted through all of it a couple of years ago at my house. It was time now to put it all away in the files. The box is now empty on the floor to be discarded and put in the recycling.

I also have a box of history items

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf that go to other towns. We are running out of space and some information needs to be in other towns if they have a museum. I have a folder that goes to Mt. Morris and I will send that with Bruce.

Friday the tops of the filing cabinets looked neat as we filed things away that were stacked around. Then over the weekend I worked alone and pulled out all the Muench history and the history of the shoe store. I am putting together a program on the Muench family to be given some time at one of our Polo Historical Society meetings.

So now I have things cluttered back up again.

Someone asked me to give a program on the Muench family since they were such a part of our community for so many years.

Bud Muench was a business man for 65 years and his wife was a teacher in our school system for many, many years. Who were they and where did they come from?

So I am in the process of going through the big box of Muench history. Did you know that Annabelle was a lover of jewelry and she had tons of it. Someone said, “She kept Daws’ Store in business.”

This morning I took some shell pins to church to show people this unique jewelry of the Muench family. They were amazed at how old they were and how lovely they still are.

In 2012, when much of the contents

of the family home and store came into the museum, we were allowed to have a garage sale. The shell jewelry was something I purchased. I have it out on display in my bathroom and I love just looking at it. I rarely wear it anymore since it is very fragile as it ages.

When I pull out scrapbooks and files full of history, I am inclined to just sit, read and look at the pictures.

The parties given at their homes with all the unique nametags where each person sat at the table is part of a bygone era.

Do people use nametags anymore?

Now we gather with paper plates out on the lawn and this formal type of living is gone. You will be hearing more about the Muench family.

Lowden family was an integral part of Ogle County

By OTTO DICK The Lowdens, Governor Frank, his wife Florence Pullman and their daughters Florence Lowden Miller and Harriet Elizabeth Lowden Madlener, not only lived on the Sinnissippi Farm, they were an integral part of this area.

They associated with several families in Oregon and joined several local organizations. Their children attended church at the Daysville School.

On a personal note, Mr. Madlener, who built his family’s own mansion at the site of Governor Lowden’s mansion, visited me when I was building our home.

He pulled into our yard with an old jeep truck equipped with a snowplow.

I first thought that it was a farmhand from the Sinnissippi Farms. No, it was Mr. Madlener visiting his neighbors.

Mr. and Mrs. Madlener are buried at Daysville Cemetery and they donated a portion of their land to enlarge the cemetery. Later he invited me to see his man cave, which was a CB&Q Caboose located in the woods near his mansion. Mr. and Mrs. Madlener also attended our wedding and their wedding gift was a new type of toaster purchased from Marshall Field’s in Chicago.

Frank Lowden was part of the Ogle County farmers’ institutes, the Ogle County Soil Improvement Association

and the Rochelle and Polo poultry clubs. He also provided the medals for the winners of the Oregon High School oratorical contest. Scarf pins for the boys and brooches for the girls were given out at graduation.

Florence Pullman Lowden, the “Lady Bountiful,” built two cottages and service buildings on a 10-acre tract of land located on the bluff of Rock River in Daysville. She called this Hilltop.

Beginning in 1913, she invited groups of 15 to 20 boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12 from Chicago to stay for two weeks. Alternating all summer long, first boys and then girls who were crippled or recuperating from illness came to Hilltop.

Hilltop operated for 12 years. Two nurses, a kindergarten teacher, a cook, a houseman and a handyman looked after the children. These children were recommended by nurses who served at several hospitals where Mrs. Lowden served on the boards.

In Mrs. Lowden’s diary she mentions several occasions visiting people in Oregon and inviting them to their mansion.

READING MATTERS

Choice is very important to sustain reader interest

B

eing able to make choices for yourself is important on many levels. Consider the many choices you make in a single day.

Think about even these few: what clothes to wear, what to eat for breakfast and what to pack for lunch, when to leave for work, what to fix for dinner, and how to spend your evening.

Choosing for yourself is motivational. For young people it is also a milestone in growing up and becoming independent. Being able to choose what you read – at least some of the time – is also motivational and a key part of becoming an independent reader.

Let’s look at how we can give our children and grandchildren opportunities to choose what they read.

It is important for all readers to develop a sense of what they enjoy. By offering exposure to a wide variety of genres and kinds of texts, we can help our children and grandchildren dis-

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner cover what they like to read. Be sure to include online websites and resources, magazines, poetry and all kinds of fiction and nonfiction books.

As preferences are developed, we can encourage our readers to talk about what they like and why. If they find a book they especially enjoy, you might try to find other books by the same author. Include discussions about the illustrations, too.

Perhaps they prefer photographs to paintings or drawings. Perhaps they like the comic book format of graphic novels. This is not about being right or wrong – it is truly about personal preferences.

Young readers often want to read,

or hear someone read to them, the same book over and over again. Parents sometimes become concerned about that. It seems there is something about that book that the reader is drawn to, and that’s definitely what we want to happen.

If we continue to offer and provide a wide range of kinds of texts, new favorites will eventually come along.

If needed, we can offer controlled choice in these situations. We might say, “We can read your favorite book again, but let’s pick one new book to read, too.”

Our children need to know that there will be times when they are required to read something they may not like, and they may not always have a choice.

This most likely will happen in school at least occasionally. We can give plenty of examples in our own lives, such as reading our income tax forms. Knowing that there are also

chances to choose what they read helps make it easier to read things they don’t enjoy as much.

big concern, he said. Firefighters must load the hoses and do all vehicle maintenance outdoors because the ceilings are too low for them to be able to stand on the trucks.

“It’s not that bad in July, but in subzero weather? It’s not fun. It’s not safe,” Hough said.

Hough said there are a couple of properties the district is looking at as potential locations for a new fire station, but nothing is set in stone.

“We’re doing our due diligence,” he said. “We’re looking at the grade on-site, what building removal would cost, what utilities we would need to extend. … The site we choose will be a good value and be able to serve our community for the next 50 to 75 years, the lifespan of the building.”

He declined to provide specifics on what locations are being considered, citing ongoing negotiations.

The estimated cost of a new building is between $4 million and $4.5 million – up from the $2.5 million estimate they had about 18 months ago when talks began in earnest, he said.

Nothing in the proposed design has changed, Hough noted.

The cost has risen because the cost of building materials has

risen, he said.

The cost of the new building reflects fiscal prudence and is in line with stations in similar-sized communities in northwest Illinois, according to a news release from the Mt. Morris Fire Foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The foundation is shooting to raise $2 million through donations and fundraisers, Hough said.

They don’t yet have any solid plans for events, but “they’re just getting this ball rolling,” he said.

Fire District trustees and staff are working to secure $2 million to $2.5 million in grants, and have hired a specialist to help them seek and secure such funding, he said.

“Our goal is to build this building and have a nice, safe building to serve the community that doesn’t cost any additional money to the taxpayers,” Hough said.

They are looking at local, state and federal grants, as well as private foundation funding opportunities, Hough said. Some applications already have been submitted, and others are in the process of being prepared.

On June 21, Ogle County Board members approved the fire district’s application for a $42,500 economic development grant.

Those funds are coming from the county’s American Rescue Plan Act allocation.

“No stone is going unturned,” Hough said.

Supply chain issues delay Polo’s storm sewer work $3.2 million Colden Street Project start delayed while waiting on delivery of crucial parts

A $3.2 million storm sewer improvement project in Polo is more than two months behind schedule because of delayed delivery of crucial pipe parts.

The Colden Street Project encompasses about 10.5 blocks, which spans both the downtown business district and residential neighborhoods. It is meant to help alleviate water buildup on Illinois Route 26 – named Division Avenue in Polo city limits – during torrential rain events.

City officials and the project’s main project contractor – Martin & Co., of Oregon – were able to dive into the project when two of the four pipe “vaults” needed arrived last week, Public Works Director Kendall Kyker said. Work couldn’t begin until the vaults were delivered, he said.

different sized pipelines at turning points such as intersections, he explained. They’re still waiting for the other two, which they expect to be delivered in the next two weeks, Kyker said.

As of Tuesday, one of the vaults had been installed beneath South Maple Avenue near the intersection with West Colden Street, which is where the storm sewer system will exit city streets, Kyker said. The second vault the city received will go in at the intersection of South Maple Avenue and West Buffalo Street.

“Right now, we can work and go all the way to Congress [Avenue],” he said. “Then that box should be here within the next two weeks, but I think it’ll take them [the construction crew installing the storm sewer pipes] two weeks to get to Congress anyway.

“That’s huge pipe and you’ve got to dig everything out and put everything in and it’s going to take them some time,” Kyker added.

The work being done along South Congress Avenue is related to the project, but is not part of the storm sewer itself, he noted. The eastern sidewalk along part of South Congress Avenue is torn up because sanitary sewers and waterlines had to be moved to create space for the storm sewers, Kyker said.

Continued from Page 8 two state grants – a $2 million FastTrack Public Infrastructure grant from August 2020 and a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for public infrastructure from January 2019. It leaves the city directly responsible for $628,950.01, for which Polo City Council members have approved issuance of general obligation bonds.

The FTPI grant requires recipients to make a “good faith effort” to award at least 25% of a project to Business Enterprise Program certified companies.

According to the Illinois Department of Control Management Services, which oversees the BEP, certification requires a business to have at least 51% ownership by a minority, woman or disabled person; be at least 51% controlled by one or more minority groups, women or disabled people; be owned by a U.S. citizen or U.S. foreign national; and have annual gross sales of less than $75 million.

The state approved the city’s request for a BEP waiver after Martin & Co. contacted roughly 125 BEP certified businesses in an attempt to met grant requirements. However, only three signed on to the Colden Street Project, bringing Polo to about 15% of the 25% BEP allocation required.

“There just aren’t enough [BEP certified businesses] in Illinois and in our area,” Kyker said. The company pro-

viding the vaults “got buried” in contracts, and that, combined with supply shortages, worked against them, he said.

Kyker said he isn’t sure how much of the Colden Street Project will be completed this year, noting that construction crews will cross Route 26 twice during the project – once at Colden Street and once at Mason Street.

“They may not want to take and dig up that highway in the middle of winter,” Kyker said. “They want to make sure they get it dug up and they get blacktop back down to keep that highway going. Well, if it’s too late [in the year], the blacktop doesn’t work right.”

There’s a chance Martin & Co. will decide to cross Route 26 once this year, and wait until 2023 to cross it a second time, he said. None of the streets which currently are, or are scheduled to be, torn up can be left as gravel through the winter, Kyker said.

“I’d be plowing gravel into peoples’ yards and I cannot salt gravel because it gets soft and people get stuck,” he said. “If there was ice out there, I would have to just keep spreading gravel on that road all winter long, and it would be a bummer for everybody living there.”

Chances are that whatever underground construction Marin & Co. can complete by the end of October will be where they leave off for 2022, Kyker said.

As Forreston partakes in summer football camp, the goal remains the same – win a state title. With a resumé of three championships since 2014, why not dream big?

The Cardinals have been in the fight every year since 2010, with nemesis Lena-Winslow usually standing in the way. Four times since then, Le-Win has knocked Forreston out of the playoff and the Panthers will be the team to beat in 1A again.

“The best thing we can do is leave that conversation to others,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said. “We’re fortunate to be that one team that has been able to beat them.”

In 2016 and a memorable 2018 upset, Forreston indeed knocked Le-Win out of the playoffs. In Janicke’s first year as coach, the Cardinals had a memorable fourth-quarter drive to win the 2021 regular-season clash between the two.

Both Forreston and Le-Win had to breathe a sigh of relief when the IHSA announced they would be going to a 1-32 seeding for all classes, thus possibly avoiding early knockouts among NUIC powers. Unfortunately, that decision was reversed when gas prices began to rise.

“It was just pulled out from under us,” Janicke said. “We can’t control it, but it would have been cool to go 1-32.”

Fans will have to wait until Oct. 21 to see what is usually the most anticipated regular-season game of the year in 1A. Forreston will be the host school, but if past results are any indication, there is no such thing as home field advantage in the rivalry.

West Carroll did not have enough juniors and seniors to play varsity last year and will rely heavily on freshmen, sophomores and a handful of juniors.

With many small schools struggling with numbers, Forreston comes in with a summer roster of 13 seniors, 10 juniors, 12 sophomores and 15 freshmen.

“I’m excited for the team. The energy is through the roof and the kids haven’t missed a beat,” said Janicke, a former Cardinal himself. “They cooperate well, ask good questions and love the weight room.”

This year’s group doesn’t have the star players as some of the teams in the past had, but there remains enough skill and depth to run a no-huddle offense with a rotating stable of running backs.

“We lost some ball carriers and are asking role players to step up,” Janicke said.

The defense should come together quicker than the offense with more returners on that side of the ball.

“We can fine tune and be aggressive,” Janicke said. “There is a lot of guys at different positions we can move in and out.”

In a tradition started several years ago, summer camp has a 7-on-7 competition against alumni players.

“Townspeople and families come out to watch,” Janicke said. “We usually have 2-3 alumni teams, a varsity skills group and a fresh-soph team. We even let the linemen have a team. They are more funny than good, but try their best.”

This year, the older alumni took it to the varsity, with Robert DeVries and AJ Christensen leading the way.

“Robert can still fling it and AJ can outrun everyone,” Janicke said. “We put two guys on him and couldn’t stop him. Next year, we might have to triple-team him.”

Janicke is assisted by a large number of coaches in what has always been a home-grown product, one that symbolizes a true community-driven football program.

Improved Illinois bike maps blaze new trail The Illinois Department of Transportation has new and improved Illinois Official Bike Maps, a free and convenient resource showcasing the state’s vast bicycle network of trails, paths and streets.

Maps for each of IDOT’s nine districts include new features and designs officials say make them easier to understand, while including more information on noteworthy stops and attractions easily accessible by bike.

Berniece Elnora (Hartje) Davis passed into her Heavenly home on July 29,2022 with family by her side. Berniece was born on July 17, 1928 and recently celebrated her 94th birthday. She is the daughter of William and Louise (Kreimeyer) Hartje Sr. and grew up near Leaf River with twelve mostly older siblings, thus the recipient of many hand-me-downs during her childhood. Berniece graduated from Leaf River High School in 1946 and then graduated from Rockford Business College. She married Duane Davis in 1947 and they moved onto the family farm southeast of Leaf River where they resided for 60 years until his death. They raised two children, Sharri (Roger) Eickman (Geneseo) and Quentin (Rachel) Davis (Forreston), who gave her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren whom she loved so very much. Berniece was secretary and bookkeeper for Davis Oil Company, which she and Duane operated for over 30 years. She owned Paradise of Plaster and Crafts, and helped operate the Lunch Bucket restaurant located

They enjoyed the Missouri Ozarks so much that they purchased a home on Table Rock Lake near Branson where they enjoyed many shows, including their favorite gospel quartet the Foggy River Boys. She was a member of the Leaf River United Methodist Church and the Leaf River Historical Society.

Berniece is survived by her two children, grandchildren Renee Eickman (Craig), Kyle (Jamie) Eickman, Tracey (Mark) Robinson, and Daniel Davis, great-grandchildren Mitchell and Carter Robinson and Kenneth and Elsie Eickman, and sister Lorraine Cheek. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and eleven siblings. The funeral will be at Park Hills Evangelical Free Church in Freeport on August 6th, with visitation before from 10:00 until time of funeral at 11:00. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, with arrangements being made by Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Memorial donations can be made to the Leaf River Historical Society and to WinnPrairie.

Ashton, IL – Richard M. “Rich” Edlund, age 43, died Saturday, July, 30, 2022. He was born August 11, 1978 in Morrison, IL the son of Robert and Laury (Black) Edlund.

He graduated from Ashton High School in 1996 and attended Whiteside Area Vocational School for auto body. He served his country in the U.S. Army for 10 years as a 62F crane operator. Rich valued the time he spent with his family and friends greatly. He was proud of his military accomplishments. His hobbies included riding his Harley, his dog Vern, and tinkering on tractors and trucks. Rich had worked for Ideal Metal Fabrication, Grover Tree Service, PBM, Janssen Ag Services and most recently as a truck driver. He was predeceased by his grandparents Don and Marie Black, and Cecil and Hazel Edlund, his infant

JAMES ‘JIM’ A. JETER Born: September 16, 1977 Died: July 24, 2022

Jim Jeter, affectionately known as ‘Bonez,’ passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022 after a short battle with cancer at the age of 44.

Jim was born Friday, September 16, 1977 in Dixon, IL to Dave and Evie Baker. He was a welder by trade, employed at Hennig, Inc. A lifelong resident of Oregon, IL, graduating from Oregon High School, class of 1996.

Jim was an avid Buffalo Bills fan! He enjoyed grilling and smoking all kinds of meats. He loved fishing and boating on the Rock River with family, friends and his dad, Dave. Jim also enjoyed bowhunting, snowmobiling and playing Poker. He collected many trinkets, mainly M&M’s, Wizard of Oz and Marvel. Jim enjoyed the company of others and will be remembered by many for his sarcasm and his distinguished laugh.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon, IL with the Rev. Timothy Mitchell pastor of the Dixon United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the funeral home. Special cousin and “brother” Brian Black; and significant-other Deb (her son Kadin) Paske.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Michael; Grandpa and Grandma Bond; Aunt Fran Shields; and Uncle Gary Black.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Oregon Ambulance personnel and the staff at Javon Bea Hospital.

Services were held at Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, IL with Pastor Douglas Cowan officiating. Visitation was held on Sunday, July 31, 2022 from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. in Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL. Funeral services were held on Monday, August 1, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. Burial was held in Daysville Cemetery, Oregon, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

An immersive masquerade fundraiser for Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center featured sweet treats, a fire dancer, fairies and more.

A Midsummer Night’s Masquerade took place July 23. Attendees dressed for the occasion, many sporting magically inspired costumes as they explored the castle and its grounds, had their fortunes read, listened to music, enjoyed dance performances and were waited on by fairies.

The event was produced by Liz Vos, of Vos Marketing and Events, and Candace Rivera, of Hazel’s Cafe. Vos and Rivera presented Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center Board member Howard Strong and Executive Director Danny Pierce a check for $3,565.01 following the event.

“We’re so thankful to have had this opportunity to assist Stronghold and plan the event,” Vos said in a news release.

July 25 Brandon Boyt, 26, of Durand, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 5000 block of South Freeport Road at around 5:45 a.m. Boyt was released from the scene and given a future court date.
