Polo City Council members on July 12 approved a $37,723 bid to rebuild city Well No. 4 (pictured above) following a routine maintenance check in which the well was taken offline and deconstructed. This afternoon, I traveled to Sycamore to meet with a few former NIU classmates.

We met during class in 2019 and have supported each other through assignments and interviews. All five of us have teaching jobs for this fall. We had a great time visiting and playing games through the afternoon.

It was a great weekend to spend with family and friends. Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins had a special visit with their granddaughter, Theresa Hopkins, who was home from college and visiting Pine Creek.

Last Wednesday, my friend, Melissa, and her daughter, Alyssa, were visiting from their home in Colorado. Melissa and I met when our sons were in kindergarten.

We still keep in touch with phone calls, but it was so nice to laugh and share while sitting together.

A few years ago, I started a new tradition. On my free Saturday mornings, I drive over to Dixon to my favorite little coffee shop for one of their signature drinks. It is usually a combination of coffee and lots of sweet flavors.

I tried drinking coffee in college. I did not like the bitter taste and didn’t try it again until years later. My daughter, Stephanie, introduced me to coffee flavored ice cream when she was a teenager.

My love for cappuccinos, mochas and lattes soon followed.

So much so, that I have experimented with my own combinations of flavors mixed with brewed coffee. It took time and trying many different drinks until I found what I had been looking for. When we are looking for peace, there is only one answer.

Life can be difficult to manage. We search for ways to be content, at peace, and to experience joy. There is a perfect fit for all of us. Our God is here and with us every day. He fills us with hope and peace which leads to the contentment we are looking for.

We can find Him in so many places. We feel Him in the soft breezes of a summer day. We see Him in the smiles of our family and friends. We feel Him in quiet moments of our prayers. He is always here with us.

Our search ends with Him. I hope to see you next Sunday morning at our church in the country. We meet in person and our service is available online on our Facebook page. Bring your family and friends for a time of worship. We hope to see you soon!

BY KAREN MERLAK Now that we have passed the Fourth of July celebrations, the summer season moves even faster. We are all grateful for the warm, sunny days and we appreciate the rain that comes when it is needed. God takes care of His creation and we give thanks.

This morning in church, we were greeted by James and Nancy Hopkins. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her message for the week. After church, Suzanne invited everyone to stay for lunch and a study on the church.

On Saturday morning, our women’s breakfast group met at the White Pines Restaurant for breakfast. Our July get-together has traditionally been a meal out which has been postponed for the past couple of years.

Our group included Judy Riffle, Vicki Hay, Martha Johanssen, Sandra Ford, Elizabeth Elliott, Suzanne Hall Stout, Sheryl Hopkins and me. Spending time in fellowship and enjoying a delicious meal are a great way to start the weekend.

After breakfast, my friend, Amy and I headed to Rochelle for a day of shopping and lunch. We took the long way home stopping at several shopping spots along the way. We found some sweets at my Aunt

German Valley Days 2022 is coming this weekend with plenty of activities for family fun.

The festival will be held July 15 and 16 with festivities getting underway at 5 p.m. on Friday with a “Fireworks Fundraising Supper,” an ice cream booth and a plant sale at the historical society.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. there will be German Valley/Forreston 12 & Under Baseball and Softball All Star Games.

“Activities will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday with a Pancake Breakfast, FHN Health Screenings and 5K & Kids Fun Run registration. Car Show Registration and an Antique Tractor Show will begin at 9 a.m.,” organizer Donna Smith said. “Activities for youngsters will include a Pig Scramble, Coloring Contest, Kiddie Tractor Pull, Petting Zoo and Nerf Blaster Wars. Also planned are Face Painting, Big Bubble Time with Jason Kollum and Hacky Sack by Andy Linder.”

“Trivia Night will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by a prize drawing.

The day will conclude with fireworks over Lake Baalton,” Smith said.

The German Valley Historical Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Grimes to mark 50 years of marriage Charles and Alice (Hadley) Grimes will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on July 22.

They were married on July 22, 1972, at the First Church of the Nazarene in

Kable Band plays on Wednesdays The Kable Band continues its summer season of concerts at the Warren Reckmeyer Bandshell in downtown Mt. Morris.

“The Kable Band has performed on the Campus for 126 years. This year we’re celebrating the 100th anniversary of the bandshell,” said Sylvia Saunders, band member.

“Conducted by Andy Eckardt, the band brings a variety of music to entertain all. Special performers are often featured.”

The band performs Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 3.

“Come early, enjoy an ice cream social. Benches are provided or bring your lawn chair,” Saunders said.

Deadline to submit your plantings is July 29; event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Polo Area Senior Center The Polo Woman’s Garden Club Flower Show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Polo Area Senior Center, 101 E. Mason Street, in Polo.

This year’s theme is “BEE-UTIFUL BLOOMS.” Gardeners are invited to “sign up” to display their plantings for their own enjoyment and for any onlookers out for a pleasant afternoon.

The categories people may enter include “cut flowers,” “wildflower arrangements,” “outdoor container plantings” - “not house plants,” “floral bouquets,” “single specimen of flower,” and a “horticulture category for vegetables.”

There is a special class for children under 12 years of age to enter that include some of the adult categories plus one called “ditch display” which means “any plant growing in a ditch” so probably NOT grown by choice. All children entering will receive a participation ribbon and other recognition.

There is no entry fee for either adults or children exhibiting items and all may enter as many categories as they would like.

First-, second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded in each adult class plus a “People’s Choice” award will be given. Judging will be done between 10 a.m. and noon by three area judges experienced in gardening and/or working as professionals in the field.

Exhibitors need to set up between 8 and 10 a.m. the morning of the show.

Entries must remain on display until the end of the show at 4 p.m. that day.

No exhibitors will be allowed in the building during the judging.

In addition to the main exhibits,

there will be other demonstrations and presentations going on during the afternoon.

Master Gardener Leah Patapack from Oregon will be giving a talk called “Buzz on Pollinators” with handouts on the importance of pollinators and how to attract them.

Gardener Pat Kuhn from Polo will be showing the “Many things you can do with dried and preserved flowers.”

Bri Kuhn, also from Polo, will demonstrate and explain about creating “Fresh Floral Designs.”

There will be drawings for door prizes, donated through the generosity of businesses within the city of Polo and surrounding towns.

Those contributing to the flower show from Polo are Country Floral, Fresh Foods Grocery Store, Polo Pharmacy and Knie’s Appliance Store.

Door prizes from Dixon are being donated from Flowers, Etc. and Britni Dvorak, owner of the Hallmark Store.

Door prizes from Oregon will be donated by Merlin’s Greenhouse and Floral and also from A.M. Floral Co. flower shop in downtown Oregon.

There also will be a drawing to win a Garden Club gift basket or a special “Bear, Bee and Butterfly” gift basket for children under 12 who participate or attend the flower show with an adult.

To exhibit the day of the flower show, official entry forms must be obtained and returned by mail or in person by July 29 to the contact person listed on the form.

Forms are available in Polo at Knie’s Appliance, Country Floral, Polo City Hall, Polo Pharmacy, Polo Library, Polo Senior Center or from Polo Woman’s Garden Club members.

Two trees on the north side of the courthouse lawn were cut down for safety reasons

“The two trees that we removed were hard maples,” said Marcia Heuer, Ogle County Board member for District 8 and Safety Committee chairperson. “They’re not indigenous and they were an extreme safety concern for our employees and the general public.”

A crew from Timberman Tree Service of Rochelle cut down the trees and ground the stumps July 5.

Both trees had deterioration, and there were some dead branches in the canopies surrounding the courthouse and a stump yet to be ground, Heuer said. All were safety concerns, she said.

Two large mature trees, located on the north side of the Ogle County Courthouse Square, were cut down July 5. Officials said the trees were removed because of safety concerns.

Heuer said Ogle County Board Vice Chairperson Patrica Nordman asked her to examine the two trees because of her position on the Safety Committee and her credentials as a master naturalist.

The University of Illinois Extension Master Naturalist Program is for adults who “want to learn about and positively impact their local environment.” Certification requires 40 hours of field and classroom learning and 60

hours of volunteer service within two years. To remain active, 30 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education must be completed annually.

Other members of the Safety Committee, as well as one of the county’s insurance carrier’s representatives, were present when the trees were examined, Heuer said. As a result, the Safety Committee made a recommendation to the county Facilities Com-

mittee that the trees be taken down, the canopies restored and the stump ground, she said.

On July 12, the Long-Range Planning Committee reviewed the plan to determine the total number of trees to be replanted, Heuer said.

“We won’t be planting trees until we get done with the summer heat,” she said. “The trees will be planted in the fall, if available, or definitely next spring.”

The indigenous white oak – which is the Illinois state tree – supports more than 100 species, as opposed to the 27 supported by a hard maple, Heuer said.

“We’ll replace with as large of trees as we can afford, to give them as good a growth start as possible,” Heuer said. “It definitely won’t be until after Autumn on Parade in order to protect the new trees from heavy traffic.”

Autumn on Parade is scheduled for Oct. 1-2.

Heuer said she didn’t know how much the tree removals cost, and that they would have to wait to bid out the replacement trees before knowing that cost.

The bill for the removal will go before the Ogle County Board at its July 19 meeting.

Technology snafus made for a frustrating week I

do not do well with technology probably because I did not grow up with all this new equipment.

I grew up typing away on a typewriter with pieces of carbon paper if you wanted copies. I also used a dictaphone at Watt Publishing in Mt. Morris. Does anyone even remember such equipment?

So last week after I had sent my column in, I attempted to run off a letter to a friend. Nothing happened. I do the next best thing, call for help. My equipment is a little different since I do not have vision in one eye. I have a laptop lower on a table, then a higher bigger screen with an extra keyboard. It is a little complicated so when things do not work, I need help.

This time it was grandson Allen who was visiting in Mt. Morris. He quickly came over and found my extra keyboard not working. I knew immediately it needed new batteries and I

was provoked at myself for not thinking of that. Then I think to myself, I am now 90 and I have a good excuse.

I had batteries on hand and I was soon back in business. Then that night we had strange lightening and the next day I could not get on the internet. My Alexia was working and as usual told me the weather for that day. So I did have internet service.

Allen came back again and quickly found out my computer had simply turned off my internet for some odd reason even though it was set not to do that. I was back in business until later I found my printer was not working.

Why did I not check my printer while

Allen was here? Again I tell myself, I am now 90!

I was just lucky that Allen was in Mt. Morris over the Fourth of July for festivities in that town. I went over and Bruce and I attended the “Reagan Presentation” at noon. It was a re-enactment at the 100-year-old bandshell when Reagan in 1963 dedicated the Illinois Freedom Bell in Mt. Morris.

It was most interesting even in the rain. But Bruce had his big umbrella and I never even got wet. Later back at the house, I saw the “secret service men” walking back and forth so I knew “Reagan” was still in the area.

The rain did stop and the parade or “Candy Parade” as Allen’s little girls call it, did take place. I had my usual Tootsie rolls that the girls shared with me and it was a pleasant afternoon. In years past, following the parade, we would have fried chicken from the Moose but that has all changed. Noth-

ing stays the same. In place of fried chicken, Bruce did hot dogs on the grill. Nothing can beat a good hot dog on the grill on Fourth of July.

Later on at home, I had fireworks in my neighborhood and I found my printer was not working. Allen again will come over at some point and I will be back in business.

During the week several of us met at the museum and finished the Lutheran display. All the extra information and pictures have been placed in a box for later filing in cabinets.

Linda and I still need to clean off the table in the board room as we get ready for our meeting later on this week.

There is always something to do. The museum is always very cool and nice to work in or a good place to have our meeting.

Round barns offer a unique look at early agriculture

By OTTO DICK My two favorite barns in Ogle County are the John Cox and the Sherman Stoner round barns.

The Sherman Stoner barn built in 1912 is located near Bald Hill in Rockvale Township. A silo is located in the center of this barn.

The Cox round barn was built by John Cox in 1917. This is located on Cox Road south of Stillman Valley.

After a severe tornado storm damaged the barn on Aug. 4, 2008, John Cox decided to restore the barn back to the way it was originally built in 1917.

John’s grandfather, also named John, built this round barn. John contacted some Amish carpenters from Michigan who were noted for their expert craftsmanship and knowledge of restoring antique buildings.

John picked up the crew of six carpenters who lived in Centerville, Michigan, at the Indiana border every Monday morning and returned them to that same location at the end of the week. John said his grandfather traveled to Germany to get the design for the barn.

This barn is 192 feet in circumference and is 62 feet high. It took 75 squares of wood shingles and each one had to be shaped to fit.

It took five weeks to restore the storm damage to this barn. Inside and out this 114-year-old milk barn is a wonderful historic building.

The very large Baker-Karen round barn is located in an 87-acre community park located at Manhattan, Illinois. John C. Baker built this barn in 1898. It is constructed of wood salvaged from the 1893 Chicago Fire.

This 20-sided round barn is one of

the largest polygonal round barns in Illinois. Manhattan is located 50 miles southwest of Chicago.

A Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band, Fortunate Sons, returns to Mt. Morris’ Jamboree concert series on Friday, July 15, at 7 p.m.

“Based in Chicago, The Fortunate Sons tour nationally and internationally to keep the tradition of CCR’s timeless music alive,” said Larry Ubben, Jamboree organizer.

“Using original vintage gear and instruments, accurate costumes and spot-on musical ability, The Fortunate Sons instantly conjures up the full experience of Fortunate Sons seeing Creedence in their prime. Food and drink concessions for the evening will be served by the Mt. Morris Senior Center starting at 6 p.m.

“Please bring a blanket or chair or enjoy the new benches and join the fun on our beautiful, historic campus in the center of Mt. Morris, two blocks south of Route 64 on Wesley Avenue and enjoy these free Jonny Lyons and the Pride concerts,” Ubben said.

In the event of rain, the concerts would move to the Pinecrest Grove Community Center, located at 500 Evergreen Lane, seven blocks south of Route 64 on McKendrie Street.

Pulled pork dinner July 16 in Polo The Polo Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Festival Committee is hosting a Pulled Pork Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, July 16, at the Polo Library before the Outdoor Summer Concert featuring oldies/classic rock band Project Nostalgia.

The dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. with all proceeds benefiting the 2022 Polo Christmas Festival.

168th Ogle County Fair is Wednesday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 7 The Ogle County Fair could never be a reality without the hundreds of hours donated every year by dedicated volunteers.

“It wouldn’t happen without them.

That’s how important they are,” fair publicity director Carol Magnuson said.

The 168th Ogle County Fair will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 7, at the fairgrounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Road, one mile west of Oregon just north of Illinois 64.

New and better lighting all over the fairgrounds is one of the volunteer projects that fairgoers will notice and appreciate this year.

Since March, Carol’s husband Rich Magnuson and his son Nate have spent their spare time changing 60 lights to LED. Carol Magnuson said they started with the exhibit building and worked their way through the rest.

Marty Bush, owner of Ehmens of Oregon, supplied a bucket truck for the project as well as the fuel to run it.

“That’s a big donation,” Magnuson said.

Everything from planning the fair, getting the grounds ready, making the event run smoothly and cleaning up afterward is accomplished by volunteers.

All the members of the fair board are volunteers and work throughout the year to make the annual event happen.

“Our board does not get paid for the time that they put in,” Magnuson said.

“It is the love of the fair and the enjoyment of the families who attend and

Heirlooms, items for reimaging a room, and possessions that have accumulated over the years are all part of this year’s sale.

“We receive very unusual things as well as practical items. Everything is clean and organized,” Virnoche said.

“We all know it is important to recycle.

This is the perfect place to find something that can be transformed into a

Prep work begins months before the fair with booking entertainers and getting contracts in order.

4-H club members donated their time this spring to pick up debris all over the grounds so that mowing could begin.

Then there’s flowers to plant, painting inside and out, buildings to clean, pens to be set up, numerous safety checks, tracks to prepare at the grandstands and horse arena, signs and fences to put up, portable toilets to be ordered and publicity, just to name a few.

“There’s a lot of work behind the scenes. It takes a team of caring people to get everything ready to have a fair.

It’s like putting on a party for 10,000 people for five days,” Magnuson said.

During the fair, volunteers take tickets, direct parking, clean up garbage and provide information.

Afterward, everything is cleaned up and put away and the planning begins all over again.

To honor the efforts of the people who help the fair board annually names a Volunteer of the Year.

“We appreciate all who donate a very precious thing and that is their time,” Magnuson said.

More volunteers are needed, Magnuson said, and the fair board welcomes anyone willing to help out, no matter how much or little time they have to give.

“Anyone can volunteer,” she said.

“If you have only two hours, we’ll take you.”

An open house at David L. Rahn Jr. High on July 3 brought Mounder alumni from far and near. Approximately 200 alumni, teachers and friends strolled through the building, checking out their old classrooms, reminiscing, sharing stories ... and maybe some “antics” that occurred during those days when it was a high school.

Mounders signed in at the door with the year they graduated and where they now reside. Other than our many local area Mounders, there were alumni from Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, California, Mississippi, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Virginia, Oregon, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.

may find something unique to refurbish.

“There are many items that will help you renovate something you have or provide an accent to a room. Yard and garden items are a great bargain too. Vintage is the word. There are too many collector pieces to describe,” she said.

Fire departments receive grain bin rescue augers from Ogle County Farm Bureau Young Leaders The Ogle County Farm Bureau Young Leaders, through financial support from COUNTRY Financial, recently donated grain bin rescue augers to three area fire departments serving Ogle and Lee Counties.

Augers were purchased by COUNTRY Financial and distributed to the Byron, Rochelle and Rural Dixon Fire Departments.

The augers are used in conjunction with grain bin rescue tubes in extracting individuals trapped in collapsed grain inside of grain bins. The rescue augers allow first responders to extricate grain more rapidly saving vital minutes in lifesaving situations.

“This effort is one that COUNTRY Financial has dedicated itself to over decades providing necessary equipment to local communities to assist them in emergency response situations. As someone who lost a family member in a grain bin accident I’m glad to see that this donation may save other families from that tragedy. We’re proud to be a part of this effort to support and serve the communities that we serve,” COUNTRY Financial Agency’s Phil Hasz said.

The three fire districts were chosen as they were

the only ones serving Ogle County that did not currently have a rescue auger on-site.

“This was an activity our entire committee was committed to, to assist our first responders in saving lives on the farm. Each year we tragically lose farmers to grain bin entrapment accidents and hopefully by having this equipment available our local fire districts can prevent fatalities from occurring, said Ryan Reeverts, Ogle County Farm Bureau Young Leaders Chairman.

Recycle residential electronics on Friday, July 29 The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will hold a residential electronic recycling event on Friday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

A free permit is required in advance to attend this recycling event. Permits are limited and must be requested by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27. To obtain a permit call the OCSWMD at 815-732-4020 or email the department at solidwaste@oglecounty.org and provide your name, address and phone number.

Permits are limited to one per household per month and allow up to seven large items to be brought in for recycling. A full list of accepted items and other event information is included with the permit.

An Amboy woman is free on her own recognizance after being charged with stealing what is thought to be about $50,000 in cash from the Woodhaven Association at Woodhaven Lakes, a private campground in Sublette.

In another echo of the Rita Crundwell case, the theft was discovered when Unrath went on vacation, and someone else took over her duties, Boonstra said.

A forensic audit is underway to determine the exact amount of the theft, he said.

Unrath was charged April with theft of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000, which carries a possible three to seven years in prison, plus restitution.

She has a pretrial hearing Aug. 25 in Lee County Court, and is represented by Dixon attorney Paul Whitcombe.

Ogle state’s attorneys past, present apply for judgeship

Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock and the man he replaced are among six attorneys seeking to replace 15th Judicial Circuit Associate Judge Clayton L. Lindsey, who resigned May 31 to run for circuit judge.

In addition to Rock, 55, of Byron, former Ogle state’s attorney Eric D. Morrow, 46, of Oregon, whom Rock defeated in 2020, Kathleen A.L. Isley, Allison M. Huntley, Anthony W. Peska and Ann E. Switzer applied.

Rock was in private practice from 2000 to 2010, was first assistant to the Ogle state’s attorney from 2010 to 2013 and was appointed Ogle’s interim state’s attorney in 2013-14, when Ben Roe became a judge.

He was defeated by Morrow in his bid to retain the job, then became chief of staff of the Winnebago County state’s attorney office before winning the 2020 race.

Isley, 44, of Rochelle, was licensed to practice law in 2005 and began her legal career in Ogle County, where she has worked since.

She has been the Ogle County chief public defender since the fulltime Public Defender Office was established on Dec. 1, 2020.

Before joining the county, Isley owned and ran her own law office; her work there included several years as a contract public defender for the county.

Huntley, 33, of Byron, is an assistant state’s attorney in Ogle County, hired in December 2020. Before that,

416 runners and walkers take part in annual event at Oregon Park West

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Sunny and warm with lots of color splashes was the recipe for family fun during the Oregon Park District’s Color Run on Tuesday night.

Some 416 runners, walkers and even stroller passengers took part in the annual event at Oregon Park West, 30 minutes before the district’s fourth Concert in the Park.

This year’s 1-mile course started at the tennis courts, located in the middle of the park, and wound around on the bike/walking path to the north end of the park before finishing at the upper parking lot, above the amphitheater.

Participants ran or walked through three color stations where volunteers tossed colored powders in their way.

July 1 At approximately 10:20 p.m., police were sent to the 300 block of W. Hitt Street for a complaint of loud music. After an investigation, it was learned that Cha E. Keller, 33, of Mt. Morris, was wanted on a Winnebago County Warrant for failure to appear. Keller was taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County Jail, where he was held in lieu of bond.

Sheriff releases July 4 enforcement numbers Ogle County Sheriff deputies issued 273 citations during the Fourth of July “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” safety campaigns.

The citations were for various offenses, including: 9 driving while under the influence arrests; 25 driving with a revoked/suspended or not valid driver’s license arrests; 1 felony drug arrest; 130 speed violations citations; 6 arrests for cannabis violations; 4 illegal transportation of alcohol citations; 15 uninsured drivers citations; 8 registration violations citations; 3 leaving the scene of an accident

citations; 4 distracted driving offenses (using a cellphone) citations; 3 seat belt violation citations.

The sheriff’s office joined forces with more than 200 other state and local law enforcement agencies to get drunken and drugged drivers off roads, encourage seat belt use and enforce speeding and other traffic laws.

The effort featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities, including the Illinois Department of Transportation’s new media campaign, “It’s Not a Game.”

Switzer, 57, of Oregon, is a Boone County assistant state’s attorney; before that, she was an ASA in Ogle County from January 2013 until August 2020, when she was hired by Boone. She has handled many trials, and has focused on juvenile and criminal cases.

Lindsey resigned after announcing in February his intent to run for the circuit court judgeship opening Nov. 30 with the retirement of Judge Robert Hanson, who will have served 16 years on the bench.

Lindsey is running unopposed, and will continue to be based in Oregon, as was Hanson.

The new associate judge also will be based in Oregon.
