azoellner@shawmedia.com Mt. Morris Village Board trustees declined the Oregon School District Board’s offer to take ownership of the David L. Rahn Junior High School building.

“We strongly recommend that the Oregon School Board reconsider pursuing any disposition of the DLR building for a period of two to three years,” Village President Phil Labash read from a prepared statement at the village board’s June 14 meeting. “This includes the potential transfer of DLR to the Village of Mt. Morris.”

Oregon School District Superintendent Tom Mahoney went before the Mt. Morris Village Board on May 24 at the behest of school board members to ask if village officials were interested in the property. Discussion or consideration of the transfer was not on the agenda for that village

David L. Rahn Junior High School is located on Brayton Road in Mt. Morris. board meeting, so trustees were unable to talk about, or take action on, the matter at that time.

On Tuesday, village trustees unanimously voted to decline the offer of ownership following a closed session. The closed session lasted less than 10 minutes.

School board members on Feb. 22 voted 4-2 to close DLR at the end of the 2021-22

school year, despite pleas from Mt. Morris officials and residents to keep the school open. Seventh grade and eighth grade students will attend Oregon High School, which is 5 miles to the east in Oregon.

DLR was the last remaining school in Mt. Morris. The Mt. Morris School District merged with the Oregon School District in 1994 because of financial reasons.

Mahoney first proposed closing DLR in May 2021, citing decreasing enrollment throughout the district and increasing maintenance costs at DLR as reasons to do so.

“We continue to believe this decision is wrong, shortsighted and not in the best interest of students, staff and district families,” Labash said. “Immediate disposition of the building through sale, transfer or demolition will eliminate a critical safety net, should serious issues arise as a result of this decision.”

BY KAREN MERLAK Tonight marks the end of another beautiful week. Now, we’ll prepare for some uncomfortable temperatures. With God’s help, we can face any challenge that comes our way. He is our shelter in every storm.

For His sustaining love, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Brian Toms. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her message for the week. We are glad to spend time together and online. Later this month, we will host an installation service for Suzanne.

On Saturday morning, I joined the women for our monthly breakfast get-together. The ladies met at the beautiful, newly built home of Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins. Sheryl hosted the breakfast and provided a tour before the meal.

Joining in the fellowship were Vicki Hay, Sandra Ford, Sharon Baker, Judy Riffle and Suzanne Hall Stout. We had a delicious meal and a lively visit. Belonging to a church family means we have people to share our sorrows and our laughter.

On Friday afternoon, James and Nancy Hopkins met their daughter Amy Yoder, her husband, Jon, and son, Nolan in Dixon for lunch. Amy, Jon and Nolan were

returning from a trip to the west. The family toured many states including North and South Dakota and Wyoming.

This Friday evening, Clint and I were guests at my brother’s home. Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and son, Garrett, had us over for dinner and, of course, games.

We had a great visit before Clint prepared to leave for North Carolina.

Clint and I have had a fun time together.

We spent Saturday afternoon visiting garage sales and driving around the area. I took him to see one of the houses where his grandma lived. He kept asking to hear more stories about the years that have passed and I was happy to share them.

This week, Matt will make the trip from Hawaii to North Carolina. He spent the last month cleaning out and packing his belongings for his trip. One issue that he is facing is moving his cat, Alice.

Matt has always had a love of animals, especially cats. Alice is a beautiful cat with long gray fur, and she is blind. I was very impressed with Alice. She manages to move around Matt’s house without much trouble, including balancing on the back of his recliner.

Once in a while, we would hear her meow to indicate that she was lost. She would get herself turned around and needed help. Matt would make a little noise

and soon Alice was making her way back to him.

At times, many of us have felt that we were turned around and needed help to find our way. The noise and distractions of our everyday lives can leave us feeling lost.

When we have nowhere else to turn, we can call out to God. We call out to our Father and He hears us. He makes His presence known and He directs back to the safety of His care. We only need to concentrate on His voice to be found. We can always count on Him to lead us back.

As for Matt and Alice, he has made sure she will have everything she needs for the long journey. Soon, she will be getting used to new surroundings and relying on Matt’s care to help. Alice is a lucky cat to be so loved. And we are so blessed to be loved by God. I hope to see you next Sunday in our church in the country. Look for some of our members at the Town and Country Festival where we will be helping. Come and join us for a time of worship. Our church family gladly welcomes you.

Swim for free at the Polo pool June 24 The Polo Park Board, in conjunction with Polo High School’s undefeated football teams of 1957 and 1958, are offering a free day of swimming on Sunday, June 24.

“This is a free day of swimming for everyone coming to the pool between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.,” Polo Park Board President Larry Loomis said. “The event is being sponsored by Polo High School’s undefeated football teams of 1957 and 58. Spokesperson Craig McGuire announced earlier this

year that members of the team wanted to provide for a free day of swimming for Polo citizens given in the name of Polo High’s undefeated seasons some 65 years ago.”

At the conclusion of the 1 to 5 p.m. swim event, a drawing will be held and the winner’s name drawn will be given a crisp $100 bill, courtesy of the 1957-58 football squads.

“The winner must be present to win the prize. Hope to see you June 24!”

Kable Band Concerts continue on Wednesday nights in Mt. Morris Kable Band Concerts will continue Wednesday nights until Aug. 3 in the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell on the Campus in downtown Mt. Morris. The concerts are free.

The Kable Concert Band will be performing the second concert of its 126th season on June 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Bruce McKanna will be the vocal soloist.

McKanna is a well-known Mt. Morris resident and has performed with the Kable Band many times.

“Bench seating is provided on the campus or bring your own lawn chair,” said Sylvia Saunders, band member. “And you won’t want to miss the ice cream socials at 7 p.m.

Ice cream socials are served by local organizations.”

Lois Nelson Memorial Walk and Fun Run Pound the Pavement is July 4 Join the community for the 20th anniversary of the Lois Nelson Memorial Walk and Fun Run on Monday, July 4, beginning at 9 a.m. at Dillehay Park in Mt. Morris.

This family focused walk and run commemorates Lois Nelson’s love of the Fourth of July holiday and honors her memory in raising funds for Northwest Illinois Special Olympics and the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

Pound the Pavement is a scenic walk/fun run that travels about 4 miles around the streets of Mt. Morris and follows the route that Lois walked every day in any kind of weather.

Registration for the event is $15 per person and includes the 20th anniversary T-shirt. Registrations and checks made out to the Lois Nelson Memorial Fund may be sent to Brittany Drozd at 408 Bruce Lane Mt. Morris, IL 61054 or emailed to bnelson85@gmail.com.

I’m now 90 years old and I do not feel any different

M

y brother Dave, his wife Rebecca, the dog, Thor, from Paducca, Kentucky, and nephew Bill Warren from Florida arrived Friday afternoon. My cat went into hiding immediately.

After we had visited for a while, we headed over to Mt. Morris to Bruce and Robin’s home where a lot more of the family had gathered.

That Friday afternoon all the golfers had started the birthday celebration with the Obendorf Open. When we arrived in Mt. Morris we were quickly informed that the O’Connor family had taken first place. It probably helped that Clare’s new friend from Wisconsin is a great golfer. The challenge will be on for next year since this is to be a yearly event.

Friday night about 10 p.m. when my guests had gone to bed my cat, Daya, came walking down the hall. She stopped at the door of the bedroom where the dog was and got the dog to barking. Thor was in a cage and they could smell each other through the closed door. I told my cat to get into my bedroom and leave that dog alone.

Saturday morning of the day of the big party, family members arrived to put everything together and everyone had a job. I just sat and watched as the place was transformed into a restaurant with a floral garden nearby.

My brother Dave clipped off all the old grape hyacinths and nestled beautiful potted plants that were arriving into that space. Shepherds hooks were

While all was going on in Polo, the children were taken out to White Pines Park so they go back to the camp ground where the shallow waters are and catch crayfish. All my grandchildren grew up camping at the pines with their fathers and making wonderful memories.

The great-grandchildren now are getting some of those same experiences. Rosie and Archer in the 3 year old range had the best time.

Finally back in Polo, the delicious food (chicken and coleslaw) arrived from next door at the grocery store, my calico beans had simmered to perfection, and the party was ready to begin. So did a misty little rain but we had tents all set up on the wide driveway and it did not matter.

When you gather as family and friends, weather really does not spoil the fun.

I enjoyed seeing all the people who came and many I had not seen for a long time. Some I had marched with in parades for Jerry Mitchell when he

Some Polo Historical Society members had traveled from Rockford and Monroe, Wisconsin. I was so very surprised, and it was great to see everyone. I do not remember who handed me the jar of fresh strawberry preserves but I will love it on toast.

The 90th party ended on Sunday morning when many family members came and went to church with me at St. Mark’s.

My grandson, Adam, from Colorado, said, “They even had all the favorite

hymns I remember so very well.”

Saturday evening, when my daughter Susan and I were alone in the kitchen, I said, “Your father would have loved all of this.” She replied, “All of this was really for dad, too, even if he was not here.”

Just getting together to celebrate on any occasion is most important for family and friends.

I am now officially 90 years old and I do not feel any different.

The story behind Ogle County’s memorial cannons

f you’ve driven by the Ogle County Courthouse and wondered what’s the story behind the two cannons, maybe this will help.

The original two Parrot Cannons were manufactured at the West Point Foundry in 1864 during the Civil War. In 1900 the two cannons ordered from the Army Surplus in Bremerton, Washington, arrived by train and unloaded at the end of Jefferson Street about two blocks from the courthouse.

Admiral Dewey’s win at the Battle of Manila Bay placed four kegs of powder in the cannon sending a 500 pound chunk to the top of the hill in Fesslers’ yard.

A second replacement cannon was ordered from Bremerton Surplus in Washington. The 500-pound barrel that landed in Fesslers’ yard was erected as a memorial at Riverside Cemetery.

Now we have two unmatched cannons at the courthouse erected in the memory of our Ogle County Civil War veterans.

The north cannon is the original Parrot Cannon and beside it to the south is the replacement Columbiad Cannon manufactured the same year as the Parrot Cannon.

On Feb. 6, 1900, Hugh Ray wrote in his diary, “I went to Oregon and then I went down to the river and saw them hitch on to the big cannon and pull it up to the Court House Square.”

68-year-old firefighter presented with golden ax from department in recognition of service

azoellner@shawmedia.com For 50 years, Jeff Burton has done his best to be the first Forreston firefighter to respond whenever there’s a call.

“If anybody around us calls for help, I try to be the first one down at the station and get over there to help them, no matter what they got,” Burton said during a June 12 gathering celebrating his 50 years volunteering at the Forreston Fire Protection District.

“You are the first, Jeff,” Fire Chief Robert Meyers chimed in.

“I am usually the first,” Burton agreed with a chuckle.

During the celebration, Meyers – who has been with the department for 39 years – presented Burton with a certificate from the Illinois State Senate, a plaque from the Illinois State Fire Marshal and a mounted golden ax

Burton thanked the Forreston community, surrounding communities, his coworkers, children – daughter Jennifer Sarazin and sons Justin and Jeremey Burton – and his golden

retriever, Wrigley.

He missed a lot of birthdays, holiday get-togethers and school activities, Burton said.

“I was there when it started, they turned around to look for me and I wasn’t there no more,” Burton said. “I had a call. I had to go. It never changed.

It never will change.

“I even missed out on some meals – even though it doesn’t look like it,” he added, drawing laughter from attendees. “You get that hamburger off the grill and it’s sitting right there for you and the tone goes off. You come back, and my dog Wrigley eats them. So I share it with him, too.”

Wrigley has learned the tone used to notify fire department personnel they’re needed, Burton said. When the tone goes off and he heads for his shoes, Wrigley comes out and looks at him.

“I say, ‘Dad’s got to go.’ He turns around, goes in the bedroom and jumps up on the bed,” Burton said. “When I come back home and it’s the middle of the night – no matter when it is, if I come home 2, 3 o’clock in the morning – I get home, who’s the first one that meets me at the door? Wrigley.

“He looks up at me, makes sure I’m OK. I say, ‘I’m OK, Wrigley.’ He turns around, goes in and takes my half of the bed,” Burton said to laughter. “So I spend the rest of that night in the recliner.”

His wife of 46 years, Jean Burton, got an extra special “Thank You.” “I’ve been in the department 50, so she’s pretty much went the whole trail with me,” Burton said. “When I’m leaving the house, she goes, ‘Be careful. Do you have your phone?’ If I don’t have my phone, she’s texting one of the other guys in the department saying, ‘Jeff forgot his phone.’ When I get home, the first thing she says is, ‘Are you OK? Is everyone else OK?’” Jean has been there for him through the good calls and the bad ones, he said.

“The good calls, she’ll listen. The bad calls, she’ll listen forever,” Burton said. “There’s calls you have, maybe 15, 20, 30 years ago that you’ve had that, every so often, those come back in your mind. I bring that up to her, she sits there and listens to me. She’s a good listener. She’s been my rock.”

Burton joined the Forreston Fire Protection District in June 1972, just two months after turning 18. Five decades of service later, the 68-year-old has no plans to retire.

“I’m not retiring folks,” Burton concluded.

“I’m gonna continue as long as I can keep going. I feel good now, and I feel good helping people.”

Jon Shippert, an Ogle County Deputy and K9 officer, won the Benelli Super Nova Shotgun at the Duck’s Unlimited Banquet in Byron recently.

The shotgun was donated by the family of Scott Bowers in his memory.

“We want to thank Pete Oliver and Smokin’ Gun Worx for his assistance in making this possible,” said Mike Bowers of Oregon, Scott’s father. “Last year we donated two sets of Dewalt cordless tools to the Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Department. One set went to the Lindenwood station and the other to the Davis Junction station. These were lighting and extrication tools.”

Scott Bowers, 37, was a lifelong Ogle County resident who died May Scott Bowers 2, 2020, following a sudden illness. He was a 2001 graduate of Oregon High School and 2003 graduate of Kishwaukee Community College and a 2005 graduate of the University of Illinois Police Training Institute.

He was an employee of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, mostly as a Task Force Officer with the DEA and the Metro Narcotics Unit. He was also an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, walking in the woods and spending time relaxing with family and friends at home.

Donations made in his name to his family were used to purchase the fire department tools and the shotgun.

“We feel it is important to let people know where their donations are going,” he said.

The rain waited for the fifth annual Infinity Run to finish and then tried to sneak in and put a damper on Chana’s 150th sesquicentennial celebration.

But the locals were having none of that. They had already waited one year to celebrate their hamlet’s 150th birthday and a little spat by Mother Nature wasn’t enough to dampen their enthusiasm.

Just ask Caleb Withers, 11, of Oregon, who patiently waited his turn as Oregon firefighter Shane Mowry climbed into the dunk tank in full firefighting gear.

Just as Mowry got settled on the seat, Withers tossed a perfect strike and sent Mowry down into the chilly water.

It was one of many trips for Mowry at the hand of Withers.

“I went to the park to hit and throw some balls,” said Caleb quietly after his time as the dunker.

The Maggie & Amos Foundation, a 501(c)(3) established by friends and coworkers of Margaret “Maggie” (Rosko) Meyer who died in a house fire in Byron on Oct. 19, 2016, along with her 3-year-old son, Amos Meyer, partnered this year’s event with the Chana Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee.

Duane C. Meyer, Maggie’s ex-husband and Amos’ father, is charged with murdering them and arson. The case is pending in Ogle County court.

A breakfast in the Chana Education Center started the day’s events and also provided visitors with a chance to stroll by historical memorabilia in the school’s gym.

The Infinity Run started at 8:30 a.m. followed by kids activities, a car and tractor show, parade and a rededication of a veterans memorial.

Last year’s sesquicentennial celebration was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expiring CRP acres can be terminated without penalty

Some farmers can now plant crops on acres reserved for conservation, the USDA announced May 26.

The Ag Department plans to alter rules around the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to permit producers to request their CRP contract be terminated in its final year. The shift is intended to boost crop production amid the war in Ukraine.

Under the one-time change, qualifying landowners would not have to repay rental payments or a penalty for ending their contracts early. Approved farmers could begin preparing land after the primary nesting season, then be able to hay, graze or plant a fallseeded crop before Oct. 1.

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) will mail letters to farmers with expiring contracts that explain the offer and other options such as re-enrolling the acres back into Continuous CRP. Farmers must make the termination request in writing through their local USDA Service Center.

“Putin’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine has cut off a critical source of wheat, corn, barley, oilseeds and cooking oil, and we’ve heard from many producers who want to better understand their options to help respond to global food needs,” USDA FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux said in a statement.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and CRP, also will allow farmers with cover crop contracts to instead plant a conservation crop rotation or delay their cover crop plans for a year.

The CRP policy change comes after some ag groups and federal lawmakers called on USDA to authorize pulling acres from the program without a penalty. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has largely opposed those calls.

But appearing before the Senate Ag Committee, Vilsack struck a different tone.

“We have not created additional incentives to try to encourage more signup. We’re well below the (25.5 million acre) cap in this program,” Vilsack said, acknowledging that farmers in the 2022 General CRP signup elected to pull out about 1.7 million acres.

As of March, Illinois had 826,255 acres enrolled in CRP through 73,831 contracts across 42,148 farms, according to FSA data.

“And frankly, we’ve got two challenges here – we’ve got a global food security challenge today ... but we also have a longer-term global food security challenge in terms of climate and the impact on production, internationally, long term,” Vilsack said. “And we’re trying to make sure that we’re paying attention to both of these. And I think we will provide additional flexibilities, when and if it’s necessary.”

The committee’s top Republican, Arkansas Sen. John Boozman, said the “world cannot afford for prime farmland to lie fallow.”

Responding to Boozman, Vilsack said “many, if not most” of the acres in CRP are “really not very productive” because they are “highly erodible areas and areas that are not particularly productive.”

Added Vilsack: “We think that farmers can be trusted to make the right decisions.”

American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall welcomed the news.

“America’s farmers have answered the call before, and they stand ready to continue meeting the responsibilities of delivering an abundant food supply here at home and abroad,” he said.

Flour millers anticipate ample supply of wheat in Illinois FarmWeek

Flour millers should have an ample supply of quality wheat in the state this season, based on findings of the Southern Illinois Wheat Tour.

The annual tour, hosted by the Illinois Wheat Association (IWA), projected an average yield of 68.56 bushels per acre, but more important, generally low insect and disease pressure at this point.

“The yield is obviously important for the farmers,” said Mark Miller, plant manager of Mennel Milling in Mount Olive and IWA board member.

“As a flour miller, we’re looking for quality, good test weights, milling yield, low vomitoxin and good falling numbers (which reflect the starch content).”

Miller started working in the industry in 1982 and recently reached a 40-year milestone. Mennel Milling, one of five wheat mills in the state, opened in 1876.

He anticipates an ample supply of wheat in Illinois this year.

“There’s a lot of competition in this market,” Miller said. “But there’s enough wheat grown that we can all get what we need. We’ve got a good draw.”

Soft red wheat processed at Mennel goes into everything from pancake flour, Aldi’s toaster pas-

tries and French’s fried onions to Pillsbury biscuits and cookie dough.

“We’ve got a wide variety of products that we’re in,” Miller said. “That’s probably one of the things not well known about us is all the different products we’re in.”

Dave DeVore, grain merchandiser for Siemer Milling in Teutopolis, established in 1882, also looks for an adequate supply of wheat this harvest.

USDA projects Illinois farmers will harvest 50,000 more acres this year compared with 2021, with total production in the state pegged at 49.5 million bushels, up about 1.3 million from a year ago.

“I think (the tour) kind of went as expected from talking to farmers,” DeVore said. “Everybody thought wheat looked pretty good, and I’d agree with that.

“I don’t know that it’s a record-breaker. But it’s a pretty good crop.”

The key between now and harvest hinges on the weather to avoid any type of major disease outbreak in the crop.

Refurbished veterans memorial plaque makes it back in time for Chana’s 150th birthday bash

ehinton@oglecountynews.com The rededication of Chana’s World War I veterans memorial was well worth the wait for the McCauley family last Saturday.

A couple of hundred people waited through the rain and walked from the village’s downtown to watch the rededication of the refurbished plaque and new stone, now neatly arranged on the road that curves past the Pine Rock Township Building.

Roberta McCauley, flanked by her daughter and two granddaughters, took an extra moment after the ceremony to acknowledge one of the names on the brass plaque – her grandfather John Paul Bennett.

“He was a sergeant during World War I,” said Roberta, pointing to his name. “I don’t know much about his service, but this is really wonderful.”

Wonderful was exactly how Dale Flanagan, a member of the Pine Rock Township Board, felt when everything arrived in town just days before the dedication was scheduled.

“We didn’t think we were going to get it here in time,” he said. But the good Lord was on our side and it all came Wednesday (June 8).”

Flanagan said the restoration and relocation effort has been ongoing for a few years.

“Several years ago, as a citizen, I was asked to fix the monument when it was located down the street. I’m a concrete guy so we looked at it and it was in pretty bad disrepair,” he said.

Flanagan said rather than pour new concrete at the old location, a decision was made to refurbish the plaque and move it down a couple of blocks west onto public property.

“We thought it might be better to put it up on public Pine Rock Town-

ship property,” he said. “We were concerned where it was before because it really wasn’t on public property.”

The brass plaque was then sent away to be refurbished. “The guy that restored it actually left the dings and dents in it because they tell a story. It has its own history. And I’ve talked to a few of the people who put a few of those dents in it,” he said chuckling.

The plaque was remounted on a new granite stone on concrete poured

by Flanagan and his brothers. The entire project was funded by donations and Township funds.

“Some people gave us some deals on getting it restored,” he said. “It’s paid for, but we’re always looking for some people to help.”

Anyone interested in donating to the project can contact Pine Rock Township or Flanagan.

The new memorial will stand as a tribute to all veterans who have served, Flanagan said.

They had about one month to plan for 2021, but it still ended up being one of the city’s largest in years, Polo Town & Country Days Committee Vice President Joey Kochsmeier said. It’s momentum they’re looking to build on.

The 2022 Polo Town & Country Days is scheduled for June 15-19, with the majority of activities kicking off Thursday, June 16.

“We’re taking the events that we have and, instead of adding more [different] stuff, we’re trying to invest into what we already do to make them the best they can be,” Kochsmeier said.

For example, Friday’s KIDZ DAY funfair setup will include double the amount of games, an inflatable joust for older children and the P&C Little Rascals Petting Zoo is coming, he said. Zeiler Amusement Carnival Rides is offering more rides and there will be a larger number of food and merchandise vendors.

Mega passes for the carnival are for sale for $50 until noon Thursday, Kochsmeier noted. After that, the cost goes up to $60 and mega passes must be purchased at the carnival. There also are $25 daily carnival passes available on Friday and Saturday.

There’s also the classics such as Thursday’s Little Miss and Mister contest and fireworks at the Polo Community High School football field, Kochsmeier said.

The fireworks always are a hit and draw people from all around the area, he said.

“It brings people home,” Kochsmeier said when asked what the event offers to the city of Polo. “We’ve built up a reputation of doing the festival well, and people plan their vacations or their trips back home around Town & Country Days. It creates a welcoming atmosphere and is a great way to get together.”

Born: April 6, 1924 in Carroll County, Illinois Died: June 11, 2022 in Freeport, Illinois Bernita Bernadine Runte, 98, of Freeport, IL passed away Saturday June 11, 2022 surrounded by her children. She was born April 6, 1924 in Carroll County, IL, the daughter of Merle and Edith (DeWall) Diehl.

Bernita married Dale O. Runte December 29, 1943 in Shannon, IL; he passed away February 22, 2013. Bernita worked alongside her husband on the family farm. She was a member of Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and baking.

She loved attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, continuing to attend well into her 90’s. Bernita is survived by her son, Gary Runte of Forreston, IL; two daughters, Julie Golden of Newton, KS and Diane (Robert) Kuelling of Forreston, IL; sister, Violet Fredericks of Freeport, IL; six

Recycle your electronics on June 24 in Oregon; permits are free for Ogle County residents, but needed in advance

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be holding a residential electronic recycling event on Friday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

A free permit is required in advance to attend this recycling event. Permits are limited and must be requested by 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 22.

To obtain a permit call the OCSWMD at 815-732-4020 or email the department at solidwaste@oglecounty.org and provide your name address, phone number and email address.

Permits are limited to one per household per month and allow up to seven large items to be brought in for recycling. A full list of accepted items and other event information is included with the permit.

This event is for Ogle County residential electronics. Accepted items include all types of televisions and computer monitors, computers and all computer hardware and cables, laptops, tablets, cellphones, video game equipment, printers, FAX machines, copiers, scanners, VCR/DVD players, cable and satellite boxes, all remote controls (please remove batteries), radios, stereo equipment, phones, digital clocks, calculators, holiday light strands, computer power backups, rechargeable batteries and printer ink cartridges.

COURT BRIEFS An Ogle County jury decided June 8 that Ray A. Gough, 72, of Stillman Valley, will remain a sexually dangerous person.

In November 2014, an Ogle County jury found that the Gough was a sexually dangerous person.

“Under Illinois statute an individual found to be sexually dangerous can file an application of recovery every two years. That means that the person Ray Gough

found sexually dangerous can complete a written application explaining that they have recovered and are no longer sexually dangerous, a licensed evaluator will prepare a socio-psychiatric report, and the court will set a hearing date and determine the outcome. Gough filed an application of recovery in 2020 and demanded a jury trial,” Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said.

Rock and Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Kruse prosecuted the 2022 case at trial.

“I’m very happy that the Ogle County jury determined that the respondent remains sexually dangerous and that he stay in the Illinois Department of Correc-

tions,” Rock said of the verdict. “I also prosecuted the respondent in 2014 and I am grateful that the respondent’s victims can continue to feel safe.”

Gough will remain in the Illinois Department of Corrections under its treatment and care until such time that he is deemed not to be sexually dangerous or there exist conditions in which he can be safely released.

Rural Polo man charged with possession of child pornography A 25-year-old rural Polo man was arrested Tuesday after a search of his home turned up evidence of child por-

nography, the Illinois State Police said in a news release.

Duitsman posted $5,000 of his $50,000 bond and has an initial appearance July 1. June 8 Prisilla J. Patel, 28, of Woodridge, was arrested at 5:33 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Patel was also issued citations for no valid registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Patel was transported to the Ogle County jail. These violations occurred near the 5th and Washington Street intersection.

At 3:20 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the S. 3rd and W. Washington Street intersection involving a 2016 GMC driven by Kimberly M. Schweizer, 40, of Oregon, and a 2017 Jeep driven by Beth A. Schell, 55, of Oregon. Schweizer was issued a citation for improper backing.

Rock Falls man facing child porn, sex abuse charges involving two girls

A 21-year-old Rock Falls man accused of sexual abuse, grooming and making child pornography in a case involving two girls is in Whiteside County jail on $100,000 bond, Illinois State Police said in a news release last week.

Devon W. Summers was arrested June 8. He is charged in Whiteside County Court with production of child pornography, which carries 6 to

30 years in prison, possession of child pornography and aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child more than 5 years younger than he, each of which carries 3 to 7 years, and grooming, which carries 1 to 3 years.

He has a preliminary hearing June 27.

According to court documents, investigators said that on April 22, 2021, Summers made a lewd computer image of a partially clothed 13-year-old girl.

He is charged with possessing that image on May 12 of this year.

Summers also is accused of having oral sex with a 15-year-old girl on April 13, and of using the internet to lure, or groom, that child, according to the documents.

The ISP Division of Criminal Investigation began its investigation in May after receiving a walk-in complaint of sexual misconduct with a Devon W. Summers minor. – Kathleen A. Schultz

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

June 10 Kristopher Zaugg, 38, of Rockford, was arrested following a traffic stop near the intersection of Big Mound Road and Illinois Route 251 at approximately 8:10 p.m. Zaugg was arrested for a McHenry County warrant for violation of bond conditions, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance (heroin) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Zaugg also was cited for no front registration, loud exhaust and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending a court appearance.

June 12 Joaquin Roque SantiagoCruz, 46, of Woodstock, was arrested for aggravated DUI (class 4 felony), driving without a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (BAIID) system (class 4 felony), driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while license revoked. Deputies stopped SantiagoCruz at the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Mongan Drive at approximately 12:27 a.m. SantiagoCruz also was cited for improper lane usage, improper turn signal, failure to obey a stop sign and operating an uninsured vehicle. SantiagoCruz was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending a court appearance.

At 7:56 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the intersection of East Hemstock Road and South Center Road for a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries. An investigation showed a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 16-year-old juvenile was traveling east on East Hemstock Road and had stopped at the intersection of South Center Road.

The 16-year-old’s vehicle then entered the intersection where it failed to yield to a southbound 2021 Kia Soul driven by Edith H. Lynch, 82, of Chana, on South Center Road.

Lynch collided with the Chevrolet Tahoe, causing both vehicles to exit the roadway to the southeast of the intersection.

The 16-year-old driver was transported by Rochelle EMS to Rochelle Community

Hospital for evaluation of possible injuries. A 17-year-old passenger of the Chevrolet Tahoe was uninjured.

Lynch was transported by Rochelle EMS to Rochelle Community Hospital for suspected serious injuries. The 16-year-old driver was cited for failure to yield. The Rochelle Fire Department assisted deputies on the scene.

John H. Huenefeld, 56, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to the 300 block of Main Street in Leaf River at approximately 8:03 p.m. in reference to a driving complaint. Huenefeld also was cited for improper lane usage. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
