It was a beautiful day to welcome the first weekend of June. We are witnesses to God’s glory. Everything we see comes from the Creator and we are thankful for it. For each new day, we give our thanks to the One who made it for us.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Martha Johansson. Our church was filled with the color red to celebrate Pentecost Sunday. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her message for the morning.

Suzanne also shared her children’s message with our young friend, Harper.

On Monday, Clint and I joined the large crowd of people at the cemetery in Polo for the Memorial Day parade and service.

Once again, it was a beautiful service remembering those who sacrificed for our freedoms.

In the afternoon, Clint met up with his friends to play golf. During the week, Clint helped me with a large yard project. I’m glad for the help, but my favorite times with my kids are the long talks during competitive game nights. I have really enjoyed having Clint here for the last month.

and stepmom. While he was gone, my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their sons, Hayden and Garrett invited me over for dinner and games. Our cousin Luke Sheely also joined us.

We have one more week with Clint. Matt is leaving Hawaii next week, but has decided not to come home right away.

Stephanie and João have invited us to Minnesota to celebrate their wedding. Hopefully, we will all be together next month.

With the start of summer vacation from school, I have been reminiscing on the summers I spent with my children. One summer, I took my kids on a picnic to Freeport to one of our favorite parks.

I sent the kids to play on the playground while I started grilling our lunch. I turned around to see a crow standing on the picnic table near our pile of plates. I carefully shooed it away and went over to the table to straighten up our things.

As I turned around to go back to the grill, the crow swooped down over the food and swiped a brat right off the grill. I looked up and saw him perched on a high limb with his prize. In a small way, I helped God provide food for His creature.

It reminds me of all the times I have swooped into someone’s life. I was left in a better place because of the experience.

Hopefully, I have done the same for anyone that has come into my life for just a moment.

We may not know when those moments will happen, but we can always be ready for them. We can give the kind of love that has been freely given to each of us. A display of kindness can mean so much to those receiving it.

Sometimes we are in need of love and kindness. When it appears in small, unexpected ways, we can be grateful. We can thank God for the many ways we see His presence in the actions of those around us.

As for our family and the crow, the bird enjoyed his lunch. We had plenty so it did not bother us to share. The kids and I ate quickly and we packed up our picnic. We had a great time at the park. Now, we remember the story with laughter, still amazed at the bird’s quick moves.

I hope to see you next Sunday at our little church in the country. Join us for a time of worship and fellowship. Come and let us share God’s love with you and your family.

Area speller eliminated at national spelling bee The first three rounds at the Scripps National Spelling Bee are designed to winnow the field. True to form, more than half the contestants were eliminated last Tuesday, including the Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Spelling Bee champ.

Merit Namaste-Rose of David L. Rahn Junior High School in Mt. Morris was eliminated in the first round.

She exited when she misspelled “nimiety,” a word that means excess or redundancy.

The first round eventually took out 69 spellers. The second round, in which the competitors were tested on their vocabulary, eliminated another 28.

The third round, which again focused on spelling, tripped up another 46.

In the first-ever lightning-round tiebreaker, Harini Logan, a 13-year-old eighth-grader from San Antonio, Texas, won the event.

She competed in the last fully in-person bee three years ago and endured the pandemic to make it back, spelling 21 words correctly during a 90-second spell-off.

Chana to celebrate 150th anniversary this weekend Events are Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, at Chana Education Center The Maggie & Amos Foundation and Chana residents will host the community’s 150th anniversary celebration and the fifth annual Infinity Run this weekend.

The two-day celebration and associated events – including breakfast, water races, a street dance, scavenger hunt, parade and more – are June 11 and 12.

The majority of events will take place at the Chana Education Center, located at 204 Main St., Chana.

By partnering with the Chana Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee, they’re able to offer a lot more activities over a longer period of time, said Megan Dettman, one of The Maggie & Amos Foundation’s main coordinators. She also served as the foundation’s representative on the celebration planning committee.

“It’s a two-day-long event instead of just a few hours,” Dettman said. “We normally do the 5K and 1-mile walk, we do a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and the street dance with Cornett’s Chana Tap.” Members of the Chana Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee approached The Maggie & Amos Foundation and asked to “combine forces for the greater good,” she said. “We said, ‘As long as we can come to a

To the Editor, The Second Amendment gives us the right to own a gun. The gun lobby has become so powerful, almost anyone can own a gun, even an assault weapon, often without a background check, and as young as 18.

Rather than protecting our citizens, we are murdering people, often school children as well as people shopping, people in parking lots and people attending church services, to name a few.

Since the Sandy Hook school shooting, the nation has experienced more than 3,500 mass shootings according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his two

stepbrothers, My Rights and Im’a Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Chana School Museum benefit a success, volunteers thanked

To the Editor, The Chana School Foundation thanks all the folks and organizations that helped to make this 2022 annual fundraiser to benefit the Chana School Museum a success.

The event was a great example of many people coming together to make something happen.

The goal of raising funds for the old museum. This was the 24th year for the annual sale. Each sale is different in donations. We appreciate the Oregon and surrounding communities rallying to provide items for the sale. There are many to thank for their efforts to help make this year’s event happen.

First, we would like to thank the City of Oregon and the CMAAA Foundation for allowing us to use the Oregon Coliseum for this year’s annual benefit sale. The coliseum is located in the heart of Oregon making it easy for folks near and from afar to find the event.

We appreciate the Oregon Chamber Director, Liz Vos, for all her communication help online.

A big “thank you” to Earleen Hinton of the Ogle County Newspapers and Brad Jennings of the Ogle County Life for their support in running articles, so the public would know about donating items and volunteering for the event. The newspapers were vital for the success of the event.

Our pickup crew worked hauling large items. Ray Gruber, Dave and Jan Starke, Dave Stenger, Jerry Bowers, Gus Himert, Andy Colbert, Brian Grover and Gary Stauffer deserve a big “thank you” for their hard work in bringing items to the coliseum for the sale.

Volunteers, Volunteers, Volunteers! The Chana School Foundation would not exist if it weren’t for volunteers. This year’s sale had not only its unique donations, but new and returning volunteers who came forward to do their part in helping with the sale.

We are happy that the Grand Detour Green 4H Group worked two mornings to help carry items into the coliseum and sort items. The Chana School Museum was saved through the efforts of school children.

Children have helped in many fundraisers through the years. This year the youngsters of the Grand Detour Green 4H Group stepped forward to help.

After the sale, items went to other nonprofit organizations to help others. Part of the items went to the Oregon Church of God for a future sale to benefit the community. The remainder went to the Rockford Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army.

Once again the Chana School Foundation would like to thank everyone who helped to make our annual sale a success. We are a nonprofit organization that gets no tax support. We maintain the 1883 Chana School Museum through donations, the talents of volunteers, grants and fundraisers.

The Polo Park Board, in conjunction with Polo High School’s undefeated football teams of 1957 and 1958, are offering a free day of swimming on Sunday, June 24.

“This is a free day of swimming for everyone coming to the pool between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.,” Polo Park Board President Larry Loomis said. “The event is being sponsored by Polo High School’s undefeated football teams of 1957 and 58. Spokesperson Craig McGuire announced earlier this year that members of the team wanted to provide for a free day of swimming for Polo citizens given in the name of Polo High’s undefeated seasons some 65 years ago.”

At the conclusion of the 1 to 5 p.m. swim event, a drawing will be held and the winner’s name drawn will be given a crisp $100 bill, courtesy of the 1957-58 football squads.

Congress School bell now in front of Polo High School

T

he big 90th celebration has begun even though the 11th is the big party day.

This past week my teacher friends outdid themselves when we went out for lunch near Byron. We had cupcakes, cards, stationery and I came home with a beautiful big planter full of plants I have never had before.

In the center is a gorgeous fern and it has been years since I have had a fern. This planter will definitely winter in the house and I am glad I have plenty of space.

When we came back to Polo, we drove past the school to see the Congress School bell that has now been placed in front of the high school. Congress School closed in 1983 and in 1986 the bell was brought to Aplington House for safe keeping. It was placed in the basement.

When we opened the Polo History Museum, six guys carried it from Aplington House to a spot in the new museum. Recently the school wanted it back and it has been placed in front

Then the question came up as to where it had been when it was at Congress School since there was no bell tower. I said I did not know where the bell was kept at Congress but I knew that when I went to school Davey Rebuck rang the bell from the basement.

The rule was that you were not tardy unless you were not in your seat when the bell stopped ringing. I lived two blocks from Congress and I was a dawdler.

Davey would see me coming and he would just keep ringing that bell until he knew I would be in my seat! He would look out the basement window.

This morning at breakfast Bob and Shirley Heath, Bud Woodin and I got to talking about the bell. Bud knew the bell was higher up in the building with a long rope that came all the way down to the basement. Then the janitor could hook onto it and ring it from the basement.

Bud thought it might have been up on the third floor but he never really saw the bell. He did see the rope that came on down through to the basement.

So if you want to see where the Congress School bell has currently been placed, drive by the school and look to the front of the building. This is where the new home of the bell is at the present.

At the museum we soon need to be working on the display for the Lutheran Church. That means bringing the board down from Aplington House, laying out all information, deciding what needs to be said, copying off information, and placing it on the board.

I remember doing that years ago on other subjects. Pictures and big words work better.

But first I need to celebrate my 90th birthday on June 11 at my home from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. All are invited.

Art colony moved to Oregon after a malaria outbreak

By OTTO DICK Lorado Taft and his associates first established their summer home in Bass Lake, Indiana. An outbreak of malaria discouraged them from returning so they searched for another location.

Wallace Heckman, an attorney at the University of Chicago, owned a country estate where Lowden State Park, northeast of Oregon is now located.

In 1898 Mr. Heckman invited a number of Chicago artists to use the area.

The Heckmans, patrons of the arts, provided a number of cabins for the artists. They formed a colony and adopted the name Eagles Nest.

The artists could lease 15 acres from the Heckmans for $1 per year.

Labor Day was a special day marking the end of the summer season.

Each year artists dressed in costumes and carrying banners marched to the Heckman home where they had dinner on the lawn. They paid their annual rent of $1 with 89 pennies, 2 slugs, and assorted postage stamps.

Cottages occupied by the colonists were small. These cottages were converted into offices, residences or assembly rooms for Taft Campus.

These were log cabins with fire places, small windows and no insulation.

Leffelman retiring from park district after 32 years

Debbie Leffelman, Oregon Park District Special Event & Adult Recreation Coordinator, will retire from the Oregon Park District on June 10.

Leffelman was hired by the district on June 8, 1990, and is the longest running employee of the district.

Leffelman’s smiling face and programming is synonymous with the Oregon Park District. For more than 32 years she has “created fun for a lifetime.”

Leffelman graduated from Illinois State University in 1988 with a degree in parks and recreation administration. After graduation, she moved to Texas with fiancé Curtis, where she interned at a military base in military recreation. After marrying in the fall, Curtis accepted a job managing the Grain Elevator in Chana and they relocated to Rockford.

While getting to know the local area, Debbie fell in love with Oregon and the park district.

“After exploring the area, I knew I wanted to work at the Oregon Park District. They had just completed the building addition and I met Thom Palmer, superintendent of recreation. I made it known I wanted to work here and kept in contact.

When there was an opening, I applied and was hired for general recreation. Thom took a chance on a young girl from Texas and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime,” she said.

Anyone who has worked with or knows Debbie understands how creative and detail oriented she is.

Special events are her specialty, but she has had her hand in most programs that are currently offered at the district.

After starting in June 1990, her first task was to create a preschool. In the fall of 1990, The Children’s Center opened. This has been her longest lasting achievement.

“I hit the ground running when I was hired. I had no experience with preschools but did my research and began interviewing. I was fortunate to hire Nancy Kerwin as preschool coordinator. With Nancy, we were able to create a program which is still thriving 32 years later. In 1990, we did not have the internet or Amazon to purchase decorations. I remember creating the alphabet letters for the wall all by hand!” she said.

In addition to the Children’s Center, Leffelman also began the Extended Time before- and afterschool program shortly after her arrival.

The only special event offered by the Oregon Park District when Leffelman began was an Easter Egg Hunt. She has created many of our long-standing

“Looking back, if I had to pick one favorite, it would be the Daddy-Daughter Dance. In 2012 we held our first dance and while it takes the most planning and work, seeing the memories being made that evening is worth it all! The dance was so popular, in 2015 we added Mother-Son date night. The themes are always varied, and we have done beach, western, superheroes, princess, Winter Wonderland, Sock Hop, Under the Sea and Disco. After several years of both dances, we now also offer a dance on Monday morning before decorations are taken down for the Village of Progress. We love sharing our resources with them and all our staff looks forward to hosting our friends from the Village,” Leffelman said.

“Oregon businesses have been great to work with.

It has been great watching our downtown grow and work with them to create opportunities and programming that brings people from all over. Oregon has become a destination and it is always great to meet new people at our programs. I will miss the business owners and working with many talented contracted instructors.”

Debbie is not looking forward to walking away from all the friendships and programming she has created.

“I have loved working for the park district. I have always been given opportunities to gain experience and grow. As a CPRP (Certified Park and Recreation Professional), I enjoyed the educational aspect. I love getting ideas from other districts to create new opportunities in Oregon. I believe we have the best park district in northern Illinois. We are fortunate to have Exelon and have been able to be on the cutting edge with programming and parks. I have been

blessed to work close to home and serve my community. I am going to miss working in the community, the smiling faces at programs, bringing joy to so many, my co-workers and the memories.”

Debbie and Curtis have two sons, Noah and Eli. Noah and his wife, Elizabeth, are stationed at Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, Georgia. Noah is a first lieutenant in the Air Force. Eli is pursuing a sports management degree and working in Champaign.

“I have been fortunate to work and raise my family in the park district. Both boys have worked for the district. When they were younger, I loved for them to participate in programming. They loved Little Dribblers, Children’s Center, and the many classes we’ve offered over the years. As they got older, they learned the service aspect and I was able to work side by side with them as they volunteered for our many events.

“In retirement, I am looking forward to taking some time for myself and family. I look forward to enjoying some of my favorite hobbies. But I am most excited about spending some quality time visiting my parents in Texas.”

The Oregon Park District Board and staff honored Leffelman at the May board meeting when she was surprised with flowers and the presentation of a bench that will be placed at Oregon Park West near the concert pavilion.

“The Oregon Park District thanks Debbie for her 32 years of service and dedication to creating fun for a lifetime. Debbie’s creativity has attributed to many of the programs and events our community has come to love for decades. Debbie will be missed but is leaving behind a legacy of programs for all ages,” said Erin Folk, executive director. “Concerts in the Park are a staple of summer in Oregon. Debbie began offering the concerts in 1995. Anyone that has attended can attest to the fact Debbie can usually be found on the side of the stage either waiting for the band, taking photos or answering questions. Always available and always with a smile! A bench will now be placed there to honor her incredible years of service. A plaque will read, ‘Dedicated to Debbie Leffelman in appreciation of her 32 years of ‘Creating Fun for a Lifetime.’”

In true Debbie fashion, she does not want a party or open house.

A private celebration with staff will be held in her honor.

PorchFest, a grassroots community music festival, is coming to Mt. Morris on Saturday, June 11.

PorchFest 2022 will feature 18 musical groups and soloists playing on 13 porches and lawns.

After graduating from Winslow High School

in 1945, Joan graduated from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Freeport in 1948, having entered as a cadet in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps program. Over the years, she held several nursing positions in Freeport, Madison, WI, Oregon, IL, and Mt. Morris, IL. She retired as Director of Nursing for Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris in 1988, having served there for over 26 years.

Joan and Mel were founding members of St. Bride’s Episcopal Church in Oregon, IL, and she served in many capacities over the years on Bishop’s Committee, as Treasurer of the Episcopal Church Women, and as a Chalice Bearer. She was a past member of P.E.O. Chapter CU and Eastern Star.

Joan was a wonderful mother and actively involved loving grandmother. She cherished visits with her grandchildren and would fly across the country attending all her grand-

Bob was born on August 9, 1937, in ForROBINS, Iowa – Bobby “Bob” McGuire, reston, Illinois, the son of Keith and Jaunita (Kresin) McGuire. He was a graduate of Polo 84, of Robins, Iowa, High School and went on to attend North passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2022, Central College in Naperville, Illinois. On October 22, 1960, Bob was united in marriage at St. Luke’s Hospital to Eleanor “Kay” Mertz in Polo, Illinois, at St. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa surrounded by his fam- Mark Lutheran Church. He retired as Director

of Information Systems from Rockwell-Collins after 33 years. Bob enjoyed photography, creating stain glass art, woodworking, and gardening. In his later years he enjoyed playing the stock market, crossword puzzles and studying astronomy. Bob will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

and Natural Beauty. During that time, he met and married his first wife, Nancy. Throughout the years, he remained close to the family property and businesses at Sinnissippi and in 1978 he and Nancy moved to Oregon, Illinois to help run the family business. They built a new lumber mill, expanded the logging operations, increased the size of the Christmas tree farm to become the second largest Christmas tree grower in the state for some time. He became involved with the Pullman Historic Foundation and the Pullman Historic District in Chicago and continued as a board member of the George M. Pullman Educational Foundation; a foundation established by his great-grandfather in 1949.The Foundation is ongoing awarding scholarships to outstanding high school seniors throughout Illinois.

In 1989, Nancy wanted to reconnect with her family in California, eventually settling in Santa Barbara. Nancy passed away unexpectedly in 1997. Mr. Miller continued to be active in a number of Santa Barbara’s community organizations, among them the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, the Hope Ranch Park Association and the Land Trust

Died: May 24, 2022 in Santa Barbara, CA Warren Pullman Miller passed away peacefully, on May 24, 2022, at home in Santa Barbara, California, surrounded by his family. He died after a losing battle with lung cancer one day short of his 82nd birthday. Mr. Miller was born in Chicago, Illinois to Florence Lowden Miller and Dr. C. Phillip Miller. HIs grandfather, Frank O. Lowden, was the Illinois governor from 1917-1921. His great-grandfather George Mortimer Pullman developed the Pullman sleeper car and founded the company town of Pullman, now part of Chicago’s Southside.

Throughout his life, Mr. Miller had a passion

and love for the environment, conservation, travel, flying and above all his family, both the two-legged and four-legged ones (many cats and dogs were lucky enough to call the Miller household their home).

Mr. Miller spent his early life in Illinois. His weekends, holidays, and summers were spent primarily at Sinnissippi Farm, the family’s farm and forestland established by his grandparents, located 100 miles west of Chicago, in Oregon, Illinois. He attended Lawrenceville Academy in New Jersey and received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Harvard University in 1962.

Upon graduation, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve serving for four years.

Mr. Miller’s early career was taken up by governmental management, natural resources administration and the forest products industry. He served on several advisory panels for state and local governments and as an officer, director, and trustee of several non-profits in the Midwest.

In 1966, Mr. Miller joined the newly formed nonprofit and Presidentially appointed Citizens Advisory Committee on Recreation

Morris on Monday, June 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. and 1 hour prior to the funeral service at St. Bride’s. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Bride’s Episcopal Church or to Easter Seals Peoria.

Generation to debut in Mt. Morris on June 17 The Neverly Brothers will be making their debut on the Warren Reckmeyer Memorial Band Shell in Mt. Morris with a free concert on Friday, June 10, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The performance is the first in the 2022 Jamboree Concert Series.

“Their show is billed as a rock ‘n’ roll tribute from Elvis to the Beatles, presenting a tribute to one of the most exciting chapters in music history: the birth, near-death and resurrection of rock and roll,” said Larry Ubben, Jamboree organizer. “Their one-of-a-kind high-energy stage performances take you on a musical guided tour of rock history from 1955-1965.”

Ubben said the first half of their concert pays tribute to the music created by the 1950s pioneers of American rock ‘n’ roll, which by 1960 had become a distant memory, but became the inspiration for the next wave of young rock bands from Britain.

“You’ll learn rock history and be thoroughly entertained by their exciting show,” Ubben said.

Concessions will be served by the Let Freedom Ring committee, which will provide sloppy Joes, chips and drinks starting at 6 p.m.

“So please plan to join us and bring a chair or enjoy our benches on our beautiful and historic campus for a family-friendly night of entertainment. In the event of rain, the whole event moves to Pinecrest Grove Community Center at 500 Evergreen Lane at the same times,” Ubben said.

Generation June 17 On June 17, a classic rock and soul band, Generation, will debut at 7 p.m.

“This Chicago based band, Generation, brings it all to the stage! It’s a ‘rock show’ of iconic, popular hits not

defined by decades, but by some of the best groundbreaking music of our time,” Ubben said.

“Beatles to Stones, Bowie to Led Zeppelin, Aretha to Sly Stone ... songs that are always sure to bring smilin’ faces in the crowd!”

David Huizenga is the frontman with unique style and incredible energy while Stefanie Berecz provides vocals with Dave and Stef often trading off verses in duets, making these songs their own, but keeping true to the original artists.

They are backed by the horn section “The Brasscals.”

“Concessions for the evening will be provided by the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge, who will be serving hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pulled pork, coleslaw, chips, brownies, soda and water, starting at 6 p.m.,” Ubben said. “Please bring a chair or blanket or enjoy our benches and plan to join us on our beautiful and historic campus in the center of town for what promises to be an exhilarating family-friendly concert.”

In the event of rain, the event moves to the Moose Lodge, located at 101 Moose Drive at the same time.

Encore! Mt. Morris seeks art entries for 2022 show Encore! Mt. Morris’ August art show in the Old Sandstone Gallery is calling for entries at this time. Deadline to send in an application of up to three pieces is July 10.

The show theme is “Small Town Livin’,” an art show featuring all kinds of media. Encore! Mt. Morris’ fourth gallery show of the 2022 season might include historic downtown images of your favorite small town, landmarks, vintage or current lifestyle/activities, festivals, etc.

Artists may submit up to three images of their original works for consideration. Applications are available online at encoremtmorris.com. Click on the Art Show Registration button.

You may fill out the application online (preferred; attach your digital picture and entry fee) or print the application and send your packet to the Village Hall, 105 W. Lincoln St., Mt Morris.

A jury will select the pieces to be included in the show and a judge will select the awards, which will be announced on opening night, Aug. 5.

Oregon Woman’s Club awards scholarship

Aubrey Point, a member of Oregon High School’s Class of 2022, has been awarded the Oregon Woman’s Scholarship for the year.

The award is based on the student’s academic achievement, offices, honors or awards held in high school, extracurricular activities, community service/volunteer activities and a written essay.

Aubrey plans to attend Iowa State University. She has yet to determine a major, but will be exploring a number of possible fields of study, including meteorology.

The July 4 patriotic concert will be behind the David L. Rahn Junior High School prior to the fireworks.

The Kable Band is beginning its 126th season of summer concerts and 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the band shell.

The Kable Band, under the direction of Oregon High School Band Director Andy Eckardt, performs a variety of music for audiences. Concerts also feature a special soloist or soloists. Featured June 15 is Chris Scanlon, a trumpet professor at NIU. His solo performance will include, “The Carnival of Venice.”

Also, Scanlon, Adam Larsen and Eckardt will perform “Bugler’s Holiday.”

“Bench seating is provided on the campus or bring your own lawn chair,” said Sylvia Saunders, band member. “And you won’t want to miss the ice-cream socials at 7 p.m. Ice cream socials are served by local organizations. The Mt. Morris Senior Center will be serving on June 15.”

May 23 At 9:00 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 300 block of S. 5th Street involving a 2017 Dodge driven by Eyerusalem B. Lenth, 20, of Oregon, and a parked 2017 Buick belonging to Kathy J. Owen, 67, of Stillman Valley. No citations were issued.

Montreace A. Martin, 33, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 4:23 p.m. for disobeying a stop sign. This violation occurred at the intersection of 3rd and Madison Streets.

May 30 At 10:52 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash that occurred in the 100 block of N. River Road involving a 2005 Ford driven by Jacob J. Werner, 30, of Oregon, and a 2014 Chevrolet driven by Beverly A. LaFleur, 77, of Byron. Werner was issued a citation for improper lane use.

May 31 Scott A. Ghibellini, 27, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:32 p.m. for driving while license revoked, fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, and reckless driving.

These violations occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street. Ghibellini was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 11:25 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call at the McDonald’s restaurant located in the 200 block of S. 4th Street, resulting in the arrest of Derek W. H. Levan, 18, of Forreston, for battery and unlawful consumption of alcohol as a minor. Levan was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

June 3 Clifford E. Lancaste, 37, of Genoa, was issued citations at 8:33 p.m. for operating a vehicle with suspended registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 700 block of E. Washington Street.

Seth G. Seidelman, 36, of Oregon, was arrested at 9:21 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant. Seidelman was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Francis Barrios, 34, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:28 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Barrios was also issued a citation for improper lighting. Barrios was

transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of River Road.

June 5 Leonardo F. Gonzalez, 35, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 12:25 a.m. for aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while license revoked, driving under the influence of alcohol. Gonzales was also issued citations for driving without lights, illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Gonzalez was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 400 block of Mix Street.

Kareem M. Washington, 21, of Chicago, was issued citations at 3:16 p.m. for operating a vehicle with suspended registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 200 block of N. 4th Street.

At 3:34 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store, located at 1050 Pines Road, involving a 1998 Oldsmobile driven by John R. Handley, 43, of Mt. Morris, and a 2007 Chevrolet driven by Haylie A. Diehl, 21, of Sterling. No citations were issued.

Bridgette A. Falk, 50, of Polo, was arrested at 8:08 p.m. for no driver’s license. Falk was released with an I-Bond and is scheduled to appear in court later. This violation occurred in the 500 block of Gale Street.

Man dies after falling into Byron quarry on June 5 A man died Sunday after falling into a quarry north of Byron.

Alexander Shewey, 24, was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m., according to information released by the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday.

At 1:50 a.m., the Byron Fire Protection District responded to the quarry, located in the 8500 block of North Barker Road, for a person who fell

about 30 feet.

“On arrival, firefighters assessed the situation and found a male subject who had fallen into the quarry. The victim was located in the northwest corner, unresponsive and not breathing,” fire officials said in a news release on their website. “Firefighters immediately initiated CPR and began administering advance life support care and the subject was transported

Oregon attorney named among Top 40 Under Forty Ogle County Assistant State’s Attorney Allison Huntley recently was named as one of the 2022 40 Under Forty by the Rockford Chamber of Commerce.

The 40 Under Forty honors individuals who distinguished themselves in their professional fields or organizations, are engaged citizens, and provide leadership by volunteering their time and talents to community groups and causes.

Allison Huntley began working with the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office in December 2020. Huntley is responsible for handling domestic violence prosecutions in the office. She also serves on the Ogle County Strangulation Task Force, a group founded by the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office and HOPE of Ogle County.

Huntley volunteers with several com-

munity organizations and enjoys spending time with her husband Dan and her two sons.

The 40 Under Forty program began in 2008 and has honored 240 Allison Huntley leaders since its creation.

This year’s honorees are comprised of men and women representing a variety of industries including health care, government, nonprofits, finance, education and professional services.

The honorees are leaders who impact their respective organizations and who positively affect their communities.

While Illinois’ 2021 seat belt compliance rate was 93.5%, unbelted occupants still account for over half of those killed in traffic crashes, VanVickle said.

Ganymedes to play at Estabrook Park and Beer Garden in Milwaukee June 12

The Oregon Ganymedes Base Ball Club will be playing the Milwaukee Grays Base Ball Club at Estabrook Park and Beer Garden in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Sunday, June 12, starting at noon. The two vintage base ball clubs will be playing 1860 rules base ball on a ball field located next to the historic Estabrook Beer Garden operated by Milwaukee County Parks.

“Come out to watch the Ganymedes and experience the first public beer garden in the U.S.A. since prohibition,” Ganymede captain Mark Herman said. “The Estabrook Beer Garden was restored in 2012 and offers imported beer, wine and non-alcoholic

aybe it was the beautiful weather. Maybe it was the relaxing drive on Highway 40 through small rural towns. Maybe it was the interesting conversation with my work colleague Earleen Hinton in the car. Maybe it was the anticipation of seeing a local team play in the state tournament.

Whatever it was, my time Friday, June 3, at the Louisville Slugger complex in Peoria, site of the 1A state softball tournament was one of complete joy.

I sense folks from Forreston felt the same way, watching their girls play Casey-Westfield and it didn’t matter who won or lost. It was more about the experience and anyone that makes state is already a winner.

The small intimate facility was perfect for this tournament. It was easy to access, plenty of parking and good sightlines for viewing.

Built on farmland in northwest Peoria a few years ago by a local entrepreneur, it includes 10 outdoor and two indoor fields, with close proximity to restaurants, hotels and shopping.

Besides baseball and softball, the indoor facility also hosts volleyball and soccer.

The IHSA has used it for the past three state tourneys, moving from the Eastside Center in East Peoria. A huge advantage is artificial turf, which drains in a half hour after a rain, elimi-

It wasn’t needed on Friday, as the weather couldn’t have been better.

What a reward after inclement conditions in March, April and May. If given the choice of sitting on the beach of a tropical island or at the softball field, I’d opt for the latter. It truly felt vacation-like.

Forreston was the king of softball this postseason in walk-off wins, but the 1A and 2A championships were worthy of merit, as both went into extra innings.

In 2A, Rockridge kept its 64-game winning streak alive with a 5-4 win in 11 innings over Freeburg, this after trailing 4-0. The 1A was also a repeat champ with Illini Bluffs eking out a 1-0 pitchers’ duel in nine innings.

Did you know that besides taking home the fourth-place trophy in softball, Newark also brought back a second-place trophy in girls track and field?

Attending the softball finals added to my list (football, track, golf, cross country, soccer, basketball, wrestling) of state tournaments covered. Still need to do volleyball, baseball and bowling.

With the 2021-22 sports season coming to an end, it’s time to reflect back on the year.

What Forreston accomplished in the postseason reminded me of the quarterfinal and semifinal football games Byron had in the 3A playoffs. Trailing to both Reed-Custer and Elmhurst-Immaculate Conception late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers found ways to win.

Byron football and Forreston softball likely had other teams just as good, but as a local coach told me once, you need to catch a break or two to make it to state.

The only way it is automatic is by having an unbeatable powerhouse.

The most exciting contest of the year for me was the Milford-Polo state semifinal football game. Fans were on the edge of their seats the entire time, with the back-and-forth play and the longer the game went on, the more intense things became.

The team that enthralled me and many others most was Scales Mound boys basketball. Reminiscent of Hebron, this little school had a once-inlifetime group of seniors.

Bowling gets little publicity compared with the other sports, but I was greatly impressed with what Ava Wight did on the lanes for Oregon, winning a regional and eventually placing 20th in the state. Very impressive for a 1-class system.

The best individual achievement

goes to Jenae Bothe of Oregon for not only winning the state shot put title, but smashing records along the way.

In the hallowed history of throwing at Oregon, she blew away the previous school record by about 3 feet and then claimed a decades old conference record.

Sometimes, track records are harder to get than state titles.

A team accolade goes to Forreston football for the long fourth-quarter drive it put together in upsetting eventual 1A state football champ Le-Win. The sad note of the year came from Oregon with the passing of longtine athletic trainer John Cain.

John will be missed for all his contributions to the school and the character he showed.

Looking ahead to 2022-23, will the shortage of official continue to impact scheduling of games? And what about the uncertainty of bus drivers, volunteer helpers, price and/or shortage of equipment, facility upkeep, transportation costs, let alone COVID-related issues?

Besides having enough kids to keep programs alive and vibrant, there remains plenty of uncertainties for athletic departments to navigate.

After conducting an investigation it was discovered that a 2016 Freightliner driven by Preston Fouke, 21, of Mendota, struck the rear end of a 2007 Mac trailer causing both units to become stuck together. Fouke and his front seat passenger Angelcelina Escatel, 17, of Mendota, were transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injures. Maggio’s was contacted to remove the vehicles and Fouke was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and given a return court date.

At approximately 2:50 p.m., deputies along with Rochelle Fire Department and Flagg Center Fire Department, responded to a single vehicle crash in the 5000 block of S. Mill Pond Road.

After conducting an investigation it was discovered that Erik Gilbert, 51 of Rochelle, was traveling westbound on Flagg Road when he experienced a medical emergency causing him to leave the roadway. Gilbert traveled several hundred feet before striking a tree and coming to rest.

He was transported to Rochelle Community

Hospital where he was then treated for his injures.

June 6 Aron Anderson, 28, of Rochelle, was arrested at 11:19 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Lincoln Avenue in Rochelle. Anderson was additionally issued a citation for following too closely. Anderson was released on an I-Bond at the scene and given a future court date.

At approximately 4:50 p.m., deputies and Rochelle Fire/EMS responded to the 11000 block of East Fisher Road in reference to a three-vehicle accident. After an investigation, it was determined that a Dodge pickup truck, driven by Sergio Cervantes, 70, of Rochelle, was traveling westbound, at which time he entered the south ditch and struck two parked and unoccupied vehicles in a driveway.

Cervantes was treated by Rochelle EMS on scene for minor injuries. He was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following sheriff department activity.

May 30 Willie Hobson, 41, of Chicago was arrested at 10:57 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies responded to Hwy 251 near Edson Road for a disturbance. Hobson was released on a I-bond and will appear in court at a later date.

June 1 Austin Cantrell, 25, of DeKalb, was arrested at 9:50 p.m. for possession of a controlled substance, resisting a peace officer and driving while license suspended following a traffic stop near the intersection of E. Illinois Route 38 and Quitno Road. Cantrell was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and an equipment violation.

Cantrell was subsequently transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Lessi Stewart-Strahm, 23 of New Glarus, Wisconsin, was arrested at 3:45 a.m. for aggravated unlawful use of a firearm after

deputies responded to the Pilot gas station in Rochelle to investigate a disturbance in a vehicle on I-39. Stewart-Strahm was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond. Additionally, Nanyamka James, 27 of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, was arrested for driving while license suspended and released by I-bond with a return court date.

June 3 Amanda Graha, 30, of Rochelle, was arrested at 10:52 p.m. for no driver’s license following a traffic stop at Illinois Route 38 and Mulford Road. Graham was released on an individual Bond and given a return court date.

Jean Resendez, 27, of Melrose Park, was arrested at 10:44 p.m. for no valid license, improper container/driver, and on a valid Will County arrest warrant, following a traffic stop on I-88 at mile marker 77. Resendez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Forreston tops Newark in 8 to win 3rd-place game Cardinals score twice in top of eighth to win another postseason game in final at-bat

bhoxsey@shawmedia.com PEORIA – The Forreston softball team capped a magical postseason run with one final thrilling victory on June 4, scoring twice in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Newark 4-2 in the third-place game at the Class 1A state tournament at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria.

After the Cardinals (23-5) saw Newark tie the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth, they retook the lead in the eighth before senior left-hander Kara Erdmann closed out a complete-game effort by retiring the Norsemen side in order to finish off the victory in the season finale.

It was the fourth time in the last five postseason games that Forreston won by scoring runs in its final at-bat.

“This game was a dogfight. Our girls really wanted to end the season on a win and their goal was to leave it all on the field,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “They definitely did that.

We had some phenomenal defense, timely hitting and really good pitching. I felt every girl on this team came in with a great mindset today of ‘Forget yesterday and focus on what we have to do today.’”

In the Forreston eighth, Erdmann beat out a one-out infield single off New ark pitcher Kodi Rizzo and advanced to second on an error. Rylee Broshous then stepped in and lined the first pitch she saw to left to score Erdmann and make it 3-2; Broshous moved to second on the throw home.

“It was a good pitch, but an inside pitch that I knew I had to be quick on,” said Broshous, who ended a 12-inning sectional semifinal win over Pearl City with a walk-off homer earlier in this postseason. “My mentality in that situation was to hit the first good pitch I saw and not get behind in the count. I had a little bit of our Pearl City game going through my mind. ... I didn’t want this game to go that far.”

Rizzo was able to strike out the next hitter, but Hailey Greenfield grounded a two-out single to center to plate Broshous.

Erdmann picked up her 15th strikeout of the game to start the eighth before inducing a lineout and flyout.

She allowed just five hits, two earned runs and did not walk a batter.

“When you get down here, every team’s lineup 1 through 9 are good, and Newark’s is no exception,” Snider said. “Kara loves working the ball in and out. Her bread-and-butter is her curveball running in on the righthanded hitters, especially with two strikes, and that’s what we went with a lot today.

“She was pretty special today, all season and her whole career for us. It was great to see her end her high school career here at state with a win.”

Newark (31-5-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth when lefty Ryan Williams sliced the first of her two triples in the contest into the left-field corner and scored on a two-out base hit by Peyton Wohead.

“My first at-bat I saw three straight spinners with good movement and I was a little thrown off,” Williams said.

“My hitting coach, who is also my dad, told me to move up on the plate and in the box and try and catch the pitch before it moves. My mindset those last two at-bats was to just put the ball in play with a solid swing, and fortunately I did, and the hits found open space.”

The Cardinals rallied in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead, starting with Broshous and Brooke Boettner poking one-out singles off Norsemen starter Kaitlyn Schofield. Hailey Greenfield then greeted reliever Rizzo with an RBI single on the first pitch, with the go-ahead run scoring after a throwing error.

Schofield pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, no earned runs or walks and nine strikeouts, while Rizzo went 2 1/3 innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs, and no walks, with four strikeouts. “[Schofield] is a great pitcher, but it was a little frustrating for the first few innings,” Erdmann said. “We all know that every girl in our lineup can put the bat on the ball. But some of us do better against pitchers that throw harder like she does, but we were even having some trouble. I think the fact that a couple of us were able to get a third look at her in the sixth helped.”

Securing yet another victory by scoring runs in the final inning seemed an appropriate ending for the Cardinals “This group never, ever quits,” Snider said. “We had two outs and two strikes on our batter in the supersectional and came through with a walkoff win. They just don’t give in.”

Erdmann said she and her teammates were thrilled to put their stamp on the Forreston program by making the team’s first trip to the state softball finals in school history.

“This whole experience has been amazing for all of us,” she said. “This team is a family, everyone is included.

This has been a great way to end my high school playing career.”

Despite a pair of losses in Peoria, the Newark players were also appreciative of their opportunity to spend the final weekend of the season as a member of the Final Four for 2022.

“I thought we had really good energy both games this weekend, but things just didn’t work out,” Wohead said. “We all tried to play these two games like any other game, and our coaches told us just to have fun. It’s a little disappointing to not get a win, but we made it here when so many other teams didn’t have the chance to.

“They were all season, but the bus rides have been so fun. Jamming to music and singing together, it’s had a different feel. I think over the season we have become closer as a group, but even more so these last few days.”

Newark coach Tim Schofield was proud of the way his Norsemen played in both games at state, and was happy to see them finish the season battling against another good team.

“I think we were all a little more relaxed coming in here today,” he said.

“We had some nerves on Friday with playing the returning state champions, and a first time in this position in the state finals. I feel today [Forreston] was able to get a couple more key hits than we did, and we had a couple of hit balls that could have easily been hits if not for great defensive plays by them.

“It was really just two pretty good teams battling.”

In the 1A state championship game, Illini Bluffs won its second straight 1A title with a 1-0 walk-off win over Casey-Westfield.

PEORIA – Dramatically coming from behind in the seventh inning of their last three games, the Forreston softball team faced its biggest obstacle yet against Casey-Westfield in the Class 1A state semifinals on Friday afternoon, June 3.

Down 4-0 going into the top of the seventh inning, with the bottom of their order coming up, things looked grim for the Cardinals at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria.

Ella Ingram, the hero against Biggsville West Central, drew a walk to start the seventh inning. That glimmer of hope was erased two batters later, as Breanna Kloster lined out to the shortstop and Ingram was caught off first base for the final out in the 4-0 loss.

It was the first time Forreston had been shut out all year, and relegated them to the third-place game Saturday against Newark.

“We gave it all we had,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “They came up with big hits and scored. We didn’t.”

With Forreston’s Kara Erdmann and Casey-Westfield’s Paige Cutright pitching masterfully in the circle, this contest featured 5 1/2 innings that were carbon copies. The only blip until the bottom of the sixth was a misplayed ball that ended up costing the Cardinals (22-5) a run in the third inning.

Neither team had a runner advance past second base, with both defenses turning nearly everything coming their way into outs. With the usually potent Casey-Westfield (38-1) struggling to hit Erdmann, the pivotal sixth inning appeared destined to go scoreless.

In the previous two innings combined, Erdmann used fewer than 10 pitches to retire the side, and had two outs and nobody on in the sixth after center fielder Jenna Greenfield made a nice catch on a well-hit ball.

“Their defense was amazing,” Casey-Westfield coach Dalton McFarland said. “They had good range and made some tough plays.”

However, Emma Mason, Casey-Westfield’s leading hitter at .577, beat out an infield single. Then Cutright helped her cause with a double into the right-center gap, driving in Mason for a 2-0 lead.

Kam Smith followed that up with a single up the middle, bringing in another run for a 3-0 advantage. The final damage came from an infield hit and throwing error that brought in the fourth run.

inning] hurt us early. It was a momentum crusher,” Erdmann said. “The other runs, they earned.”

Erdmann, who benefited from a wide strike zone, was only credited with two earned runs and had 75% of her pitches go for strikes.

“I’m an outside pitcher, and the strike zone was in my favor today,” said Erdmann, in her next-to-last game of a standout four-year career for the Cardinals.

“Those will be huge shoes to fill,” Snider said. “Kara was so focused and on her game today.”

Erdmann started the game off with a walk from her leadoff position, and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt

by Rylee Broshous, who had the 12th-inning walk-off homer against Pearl City in the sectional semifinal.

Cutright shut down the rest of the order, and a pattern was set.

“Hat’s off to their pitcher. We left a lot of runners on,” said Snider, after the Cardinals stranded five runners on base.

In bottom of the first, Kloster, who drove in the winning runs against Dakota in the sectional final, made a running grab on a line shot to left field to save a potential run. The second was a quick 1-2-3 inning for both sides.

The tiniest player for either side, Forreston’s Alaina Miller, got on base in the third inning after a slap hit. Broshous then grounded a single up the middle, but the Warrior defense held Miller to second.

Brooke Boettner, who tied both the sectional semifinal and supersectional games with homers in the bottom of the seventh, had another chance for glory with two runners on base, but was caught looking on a 3-2 count and a scoreless tie remained.

Erdmann struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the third, but a blooper by Kennedy Repp fell between the infield and outfield on the right side.

“It was a defensive miscue, but the wind was a factor,” Snider said.

Maya Redman then drove in Repp with a hard liner into left field for the 1-0 lead.

“I knew all about the comeback wins Forreston had,” McFarland said.

“Tagging on extra runs in a game like this was important.”

Boettner gave her team a boost with a leadoff single in the fourth inning, only to be stranded after three strikeouts by Cutright (28-1).

In the fifth, Miller got on base for the second time with another slap hit that was mishandled by the shortstop.

She was the only player for either side to reach base every time up.

“At the beginning of the season I thought we had potential, but wasn’t quite sure,” said Miller, one of seven starters who will return next year.

“My freshman year, I thought we were better. But after we won the regional, Kara and I both looked at each other and thought maybe we have a chance after all.”

Cutright mowed down the middle of Forreston’s batting order in the sixth, though Boettner had a long foul ball to the left-field stands and Hailey Greenfield almost made it hit No. 2 with a hard shot handled by the Casey-Westfield shortstop.

“I’m so proud of this team,” Snider said. “It has been so much fun to make it this far, and what a road it’s been for us.”
