have someone at home. He has already been a great help, as well as great company.

On Saturday evening, I met one of my NIU friends, Brooke Terranova, for dinner.

We enjoyed a wonderful, long visit over a delicious meal. Brooke is a third grade teacher, too. We exchanged success stories, talked about issues we’ve faced, and our plans for the next school year.

This is our last week of classes for the regular school year. It has been a year filled with issues, big and small. My students and I have lots of shared memories to take with us. A few of them have said they will miss me as their teacher. I will miss having all of them as my students.

As I get ready to close the books on my first year of teaching, I find myself reflecting more than usual. I am looking forward to next year and working to make it better.

I need to keep looking back to help me make the next years even more productive for my students.

In our walk with Jesus, we can always look ahead with the hope that He will always be with us. We can also look back in gratitude for all the times Jesus walked with us in times of trouble and other challenges.

When we see all the ways He has helped us, our faith grows. We look back on the many ways we were saved and our hope grows. Seeing all the ways that Jesus has lifted us gives us the strength to face whatever comes our way.

Looking back on this school year, I see that I made it through the struggles. Even when I was worried or scared, I worked through whatever I faced. I can see all the ways I was supported by family, friends and community members. Jesus was a part of every helpful connection.

Not only am I looking forward to next year, but I am finding new ways to take chances and to be bold. I can be confident when I walk with Him. He has been with me and you, every step of the way. I know He will continue to be with us as we face each new obstacle.

I hope to see you at our church next Sunday. It’s a beautiful drive in the country to our location. We will gather for in-person worship and online on Facebook Live. We gladly welcome you and your family for a time of praise. Everyone is welcome in Pine Creek.

PINE CREEK NEWS B KAREN MERLAK The month of May continues on, bringing the end of another school year with graduations and the early beginnings of summer. In every beginning and ending, God is there with us. We are thankful for His constant presence in every life change.

This morning in church, we were greeted by the Rockwood family. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout brought the message of the morning. Suzanne shared a special message for our youngest friends, Amelia, Fiona and Harper.

For the past couple of weeks, Suzanne has led a Sunday School lesson before church. The lessons and worship service are helpful to many of us. We look forward to more opportunities to learn from Suzanne.

This past Tuesday evening, Clint went over to the home of my brother, Ben Bittinger, for a visit. Clint joined Ben, his wife, Jo, and their son, Garrett, for dinner. Garrett has graduated and is home now.

Hayden will be returning home soon for the summer.

Clint is here for a few more weeks. He is starting to connect with old friends. It has been a strange but welcomed change to

“It’s a growing sport and more people are getting into it,” said Chris Chapman, manager of Rustic Ridge Axe Throwing. “You throw three, four, five times and you’re kind of hooked.”

Rustic Ridge Axe Throwing, located at 117 N. Fourth St., Oregon, will open soon, Chapman said. As of May 24, they were waiting on a standard inspection. Chapman’s wife, Cassandra Chapman, is the owner.

They are affiliated with the World Axe Throwing League, or WATL, and hope to have a participating league formed sometime in the next two months, Chapman said.

WATL was founded in 2017 by Mario Zelaya as a way to “standardize official rules, reach a level of harmony and legitimize axe throwing as a professional sport,” according to WATL’s website.

At least one WATL-certified coach will be on duty at all times at Rustic Ridge Axe Throwing, Chapman said.

need it, Chapman said. A two-hour block is $35 a person.

“That [price] gets you an ax coach who gets you where you’re consis-

tently hitting the target,” he said.

“Once you’re hitting the target, they kind of step back and let you have your fun.”

Eventually, they’ll expand to offer knife throwing, Chapman said.

They’re also working on building a mobile unit that can be used at events, including weddings, fairs and festivals, he said.

Anyone age 14 and older is welcome, although the presence of a parent or guardian is required for anyone 17 and under, he said. Chapman noted that everyone, regardless of age, must sign a liability release waiver; a guardian must sign for minors.

Rustic Ridge Axe Throwing will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 1 to 11 p.m., Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. and other times by appointment only.

They can accommodate most requests for bookings outside of normal business hours, and are available for company outings, birthdays or other events, Chapman said.

WHO IS TO BLAME IN GIRL’S DEATH? Parents of dead Nelson 3-year-old indicted, arrested on child endangerment charges

NELSON – The parents of a 3-yearold Nelson girl who died as a result of a stroke caused by a mass of undigested hair lodged in her stomach were arrested Monday morning on child endangerment charges.

Dana Sauer, 31, and Frank “Joe” Sauer, 50, were indicted Friday on the charge of endangering the life or health of a child. If convicted of those charges, both could face a sentence of Dana Sauer, 31 anywhere from 2 to 10 years in prison or probation.

Each is free on a $10,000 recognizance bond, and they have preliminary hearings July 14. They were arrested at the Lee Frank “Joe” Sauer, 50 County Courthouse, where they were appearing on another matter, State’s Attorney Charley Boonstra said.

The Sauers’ daughter, Tamsin Sauer, died March 26 from a stroke brought on by dehydration and malnutrition that was caused by the trichobezoar, Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald has said, citing the final autopsy report.

“Environmental neglect” was the other significant condition contributing to the child’s death, the report said.

The Sauers, who lived in Nelson with nine of their minor children, were the subject of numerous Department of Children and Family Services investigations over the past approximately 4½ years for a number of allegations that included “environmental neglect,” according to records obtained in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

Each of the investigations by the state agency resulted in the accusations being declared unfounded, records show.

From Jan. 22, 2018, until nine day’s after Tamsin’s death, DCFS received and investigated accusations that one or more of the children were being inadequately supervised, locked up and left home alone; that the environment in which they lived caused a

The girl was found unresponsive in her home in the 100 block of East Bassett Street in Nelson on March 26 and died an hour later at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. “substantial risk of physical injury” and/or was “injurious to their health and welfare;” that they did not have enough to eat and were not getting proper medical care.

After making two dozen visits either to the home in the 100 block of East Bassett Street, or to the children’s schools or relatives’ homes as part of 10 investigations, six DCFS investigators concluded that each allegation was “unfounded,” according to DCFS records and agency spokesman William McCaffrey.

The identity of who made the reports is not a matter of public record.

Emergency responders received a 911 call from the Sauers’ home about 1:30 a.m. that Saturday. Tamsin, who was unresponsive, was taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling, where she was pronounced dead about an hour later.

In an interview conducted before he was indicted, Frank Sauer acknowl-

edged that Tamsin had been chewing on her hair, and pulling it out and eating it, but said she showed no symptoms of pain or distress.

Sauer said that, in an unrelated visit the week before her death, he told a doctor about the girl’s hair chewing and was told “it was just a phase.” Sauer’s assertion was unable to be verified because of medical privacy laws.

Frank Sauer also denied any neglect and said, “There was plenty of food in the house.” Between him, his wife and the two or three other adults who lived in the home, someone always was there to supervise the children, he said.

According to state law, “a person commits endangering the life or health of a child when he or she knowingly ... causes or permits the life or health of a child under the age of 18 to be endangered; or ... causes or permits a child to be placed in circumstances that endanger the child’s life or health.”

The charge is a misdemeanor, but

rises to a felony if prosecutors allege the child’s death was related to the neglect.

According to DCFS, “environmental neglect” exists if “the child’s person, clothing, or living conditions are unsanitary to the point that the child’s health may be impaired.”

DCFS investigators are advised to pay special attention to “the child’s physical condition and the living conditions in the home in order to determine whether the report constitutes an allegation of harm, and to take into account the child’s age (those 6 and younger are more likely to be harmed); developmental stage; physical condition; and mental abilities.”

Tamsin’s five siblings are in DCFS custody, while her half-sisters, who were Dana’s girls, and another half-sister, who is Frank’s daughter and who stayed at the home sometimes, are with their father and mother, McCaffrey said.

Funeral services for ‘Cookie’ draw family back together

T

his past week was a very emotional week for the Obendorf family when Carolyn “Cookie” Warren was brought back to be placed in the family plot for her final resting place.

She joins grandparents, parents, her uncle Kenneth and cousin Bethany. It is a peaceful, quiet spot way back in that north corner of Chapel Hill.

Carolyn always was one who took the flower gladiolus down to the cemetery on Memorial Day. Her mother Imogene grew the gladiolus out in Eagle Point along the road for many years. She would pick them and take them to different people.

We have many pictures on slides of her holding this beautiful bouquet of glads before she took them to church or to brighten someone’s home.

While Carolyn was in the area, she continued to honor her parents and

When my daughter Krista was here recently, she came with a spray of artificial mixed flowers to place on all the gravesites. The bronze markers had a little flower vase that was part of the marker and it was very easy to place the flowers in the vase.

The cemetery looked very uniform with all this looking the same.

But times have changed and sud-

denly bronze is very difficult to get and very expensive. The grave markers are now made of different material and they do not have the little vases that tuck away down into the ground.

So they are allowing people to place hooks on the newer gravesites and it changes the landscape of the cemetery. Very interesting.

Members of the family walked around to see how we will handle the placing of flowers on Carolyn’s grave.

It will be a whole new approach and something different.

Friday afternoon at the funeral home it was good to see many of the cousins again. Linda even came from Portland, Oregon, and we had not seen her for many years. These seem to be the occasions that draw families back together. Linda and Carolyn had been very close as they grew up together.

A number of Carolyn’s high school

graduating class were there to say farewell and it was good to see who they were and where they lived now. I would not even have remembered who was in her class.

Also there were many connected with Village of Progress in Oregon and friends from Eagle Point where we all lived for many years.

Around noon on Saturday the group with the red pickup had the Jenny Lind bed loaded from our house and headed back for Florida. Krista and Jim headed north for Kenosha and all was quiet again.

The cat and I settled in the chair while I thought of how our family dynamics had changed. Nothing would be the same again but life goes on in a different way.

Ganymede Spring is on east bank of the Rock River

anymede Spring is located on the east bank of the Rock River at the base of Taft Campus north of Black Hawk.

You reach it by a set of stairs at Blackhawk Statue and then at the river’s edge you walk on a path to the spring. Before Taft Campus, this spring supplied the artist colony with water for cooking and drinking.

In the summer of 1843, Margaret Fuller made her only visit to Oregon, Illinois. The following can be found in the Story of Oregon, 1976. “Walking along the east bank of the Rock River during her visit, she noticed the natural spring at the base of the bluff. She dubbed the spring (Ganymede to His Eagle) and later sat down beneath the Eagle’s Nest Tree and penned her famous poem (Ganymede to His Eagle).”

On September 17, 1880, the spring and island nearby were dedicated. On the newly dedicated Margaret Fuller Island, Col. B.F. Sheets gave the dedication speech. A picnic followed the dedication ceremonies.

Below the Eagle’s Nest Tree a mineral spring was located by the edge of the river. Some years later the spring was walled up. A marble engraved plaque was placed above the spring and read as follows: Ganymede’s Spring named by Margaret Fuller (Countess D’Ossoli) Who named this bluff Eagle’s Nest

And beneath the cedars on its crest wrote “Ganymede to His Eagle” July 4, 1843.

The Burlington Railroad published a pamphlet titled “An Inimitable Summer Resort, Oregon Illinois.”

It stated drinking cups were available at Ganymede Spring and the north end of Fuller Island had been cleared and furnished with a boat landing.

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Oregon High School Principal Heidi Deininger told the Class of 2022 to be prepared for “bumps in the road” but to stay “humble and kind” as they enter into their future.

“Control what you control – yourselves,” Deininger told the 91 seniors during commencement at the Blackhawk Center on May 21.

“I look at you all and I have very special memories of each of you,” Deininger said. “I have no doubt you are going to make your own successes.

I believe you all have what it takes.”

Angela Reynolds, the OHS teacher chosen to address the class, said she started her teaching career at the high school when members of the Class of 2022 were freshmen.

“No doubt the pandemic affected many aspects of your life. You saw past a very difficult time, which was a very good lesson to learn,” said Reynolds an OHS graduate herself. “You are the class that’s been here for the entirety of my teaching career. You have taught

me so many lessons and molded me into the teacher I am today.”

Taylar Rufer, one of two seniors to speak, said her class had gone through a lot during their four years at OHS. “Regardless, we have persevered,” Rufer said.

Isaac Brooks, Rufer’s classmate, thanked teachers, staff family and friends for helping make the day possible.

“We’re here. We’ve done it,” Brooks said. “We’ve each overcome different obstacles to carry us to this moment.

“I ask you all to not feel sad. I ask you to look forward to your next chapter.”

Forreston FFA Alumni Tractor, Truck Pull June 4

Earl’s Dream from Kent competes in the 2021 Forreston FFA Alumni Tractor Pull in Leaf River.

The 11th annual Forreston FFA Alumni Tractor and Truck Pull will be held on Saturday, June 4, beginning at noon.

Classes for Antique tractors begin at noon, followed by Farm Stock classes at 2, Truck classes at 4, and finally at 7, Badger State classes.

The pull takes place during Leaf River Daze at the track behind the River Valley Complex. Admission is $15, with kids 5 and under free.

“A wristband gets you in all day, and you can come and go as you please,” said Joshua Bolen, Forreston FFA Alumni.

Proceeds from the event go to the Forreston FFA Alumni to support the Forreston FFA Chapter at Forreston High School. A tractor show is also taking place all weekend at Leaf River Daze.

Fundraisers taking place for Polo man injured in collision Fundraisers are ongoing for a Polo man who suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries in a head-on collision May 19.

Thomas “Tommy” Knipple, 31, is in critical condition at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

According to a GoFundMe page created by family friend Joshua Shirley, and Facebook updates from other

friends and family members, Knipple was undergoing his sixth and seventh surgeries Monday, with more in the offing.

He is the husband of Anna Knipple and the son of Edie and Gary Knipple of Polo.

SECTIONAL SOFTBALL

Rylee Broshous hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Cardinals to a 2-1 walk-off victory in the 1A South Beloit Sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

It was the third home run of the season for Broshous to go with a few inside-the-park homers.

“I stepped up and I knew I needed to do something. It felt amazing when I hit the ball. I knew it was going over,” Broshous said. “She was holding me up, trying to get me out of rhythm from the mound, so I called timeout and I took a deep breath. I needed to do something, so that’s what I did.”

Brooke Boettner sent the game into extra innings with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. Pearl City had led most of the game up to that point after scoring a run in the top of the second.

“I said, ‘If I don’t do it now, then I don’t know if we’re going to have another chance,’” Boettner said. “It just was a nice feeling because it got us tied.”

Alaina Miller had two hits for Forreston (20-4), and Jenna Greenfield also had a hit. Kara Erdmann allowed one run and six hits in a complete game, striking out nine without a walk.

It was the first extra-inning game of the season for the Cardinals, who will play either Orangeville or Dakota for the sectional title on Friday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

“I’m at a loss for words. They’re a good team, we’re a good team, but I didn’t think we were going to be in the 12th inning,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “It was a pitchers’ duel the whole game, nobody could come up with that big hit, and we had our [Nos.] 2 and 3 hitters come up with some big ones there at the end. But congratulations to Pearl City on their season.”

Cards advance to sectional finals with home runs

Oregon, Forreston-Polo send two athletes to state

It was almost a carbon copy of state qualifiers for Forreston-Polo and Oregon at Friday’s Class 1A Oregon boys track and field sectional May 20, with both programs sending a hurdler and thrower downstate.

For Daniel Dominguez of Oregon and Matthew Beltran of Forres ton-Polo, it will be a return trip to Charleston, where both came home with state medals.

For newcomers Kenrick Oriyavong of Oregon and Johnny Kobler of Forreston, qualifying for state had been a dream since junior high.

Beltran was one of the brightest stars at Landers-Loomis Field with a pair of first-place finishes. He topped the field in the high jump with a 1.91meter clearance, then came back to win the 110 high hurdles in 16.12 seconds, the same event in which he took eighth place downstate in 2021.

“In the high jump, I was fairly confident of qualifying, if not going higher,” Beltran said. “I’m looking for self-improvement in the hurdles and getting back on the podium, competing

He wasn’t happy that his time was slower that his seed of 15.24, but the race was against a slight wind.

Finishing second was Oriyavong in 17.54, edging out freshman Lucas Nelson of Forreston (17.78).

“I told him to run as clean of a race

as he could and fight like hell after the last hurdle,” Oregon coach Jim Spratt said. “I’m really proud of him because of how hard he works and the fact he is undersized for a hurdler at 5-foot-6.”

In a heavily competitive throwing field, where four shot putters and six discus throwers advanced, Dominguez

was short of state-qualifying after the discus prelims, but hit that mark in the finals. The returning state seventh-placer in that event took third at the sectional with a distance of 45.34.

“I was missing a few pieces that I needed to put together,” Dominguez said.

In a lively shot put ring, with each competitor urging the other on, Dominguez nailed a 14.77 for another third-place finish. With all the talent assembled, he was happy with that finish.

“There was a lot of energy and I was hitting it at the right time,” Dominguez said.

With chances to place in both events downstate, Dominguez looks to continue Oregon’s perennial run of at least one state medalist.

“Daniel’s getting bigger and stronger,” Spratt said. “I think his best meet will be next week with throws in the lower 50s [shot put] and 160s [discus].”

One of the biggest roars from the shot put circle came from Kobler after he hit a PR of 14.73, good for fourth place, and 0.13 over state-qualifying.

“I get in my head a lot. Today, I was able to process,” Kobler said. “I could feel it when it left my hand – it was gone.”

It was the second week in a row that a boy and girl from Forreston and Oregon qualified for state.

“Johnny’s been working hard and earned the right to punch his ticket downstate,” Forreston throwing coach Steve Christensen said.

After taking second to Beltran in the highs, Oriyavong took another second in the 300 hurdles. His time of 44.08 was behind the 43.35 put up by Nathan Lyons of Winnebago.

“I’ve been wanting to make state since my first year in track in junior high. I didn’t know it was achievable until now,” Oriyavong said.

Oriyavong benefited from Beltran opting out of the 300s to concentrate on the high hurdles and high jump. He also ran a leg on the 4x100-meter relay that Forreston-Polo had hopes of advancing downstate.

The team finished sixth in that

event at 44.94, missing the time of 44.54 needed to advance.

“We had a couple miscues on handoffs,” Forreston-Polo coach Tony Hardin said.

Forreston-Polo (66 points) finished third in the team standings behind Rockford Christian (97) and Winnebago (95), but it was bittersweet for a program that had been accustomed to success at the sectional and state.

“The meet hadn’t gone as hoped,” Hardin said. “We had lots of outside shots that didn’t come through. But the positive is that we are young and have talent coming back.”

Other than Beltran, jumper Devonte King-Black and 4x800 relay runner Wyatt Queckboerner, the 11 other sectional placers for Forreston were freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

For Oregon, senior triple jumper Joey Gelander leaped 12.35 to place fourth, with 12.57 necessary to make state. It was the second close call in a row for Gelander in sectional meets.

Last year, he was third at 12.55. Still, he closed out a standout career for Oregon and will be missed, along with Dominguez and Oriyavong, for the ninth-place Hawks (37 points).

Late home run sinks Oregon in sectional semifinal

RICHMOND – Oregon coach Nate Rogers admitted he thought about walking Richmond-Burton’s Taylor Davison.

The Rockets’ junior, in her previous at-bat, had lined out hard to deep center field in the fourth inning. So when Davison stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, putting her on base intentionally crossed Rogers’ mind.

“But she jumped on the first pitch,” the Hawks’ coach said.

Davison’s long home run to right-center field broke a 1-1 tie and propelled Richmond to a 2-1 victory in the Class 2A sectional semifinal. The win sends the Rockets (19-5) into Friday’s sectional final against the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal between Marengo and Stillman Valley.

Davison’s home run was only the fourth hit of the night given up by Oregon starter Mia Trampel. The Rockets scored in the bottom of the first inning on a triple by Lyndsay Reginer and a single by Hailey Holtz. The only other hit R-B managed was a fifth-inning single.

“We hit .400 as a team and we hit 19 home runs this year, but [Holtz] was just lights out tonight. She shut us down,” Rogers said. “They have a great program and they play great defense. We just made one mistake to the wrong hitter tonight.”

Oregon got on the board thanks to some heads-up baserunning. Bella Koertner led off the Hawks’ fifth with a

walk and, after two strikeouts, moved to second on a walk to Jesse Suter.

Koertner alertly stole third, and later scored on a first-and-third double steal. That tied the game at 1-1 and gave the Hawks an emotional lift.

But Holtz was just too tough as she recorded 19 of the game’s 21 outs via strikeout.

Though the emotions were running high on the Oregon side, Rogers had

nothing but praise for his squad, which finished the season at 25-10.

“Like every team, like every season, we had our ups and downs, but we were peaking at just the right time,” Rogers said. “We just ran into a very good team. But these kids of ours maxed out and surpassed anything we’ve ever done. One game against a stud pitcher does not take away from what our team accomplished.”

GIRLS STATE TRACK

Forreston-Polo and Oregon athletes bring home medals CHARLESTON – Area athletes won 11 medals in nine events in the finals at the IHSA Girls State Track and Field Meet at O’Brien Field at Eastern Illinois University on May 21.

Sterling junior Alice Sotelo won the state championship in the Class 2A triple jump, while Oregon senior Jenae Bothe took the state title in the 1A shot put.

Forreston-Polo’s Sydni Badertscher tied for fifth in the 1A shot put, as her top prelim throw of 11.37 meters (37 feet, 3¾ inches) carried over and turned out to be her best on the weekend.

She credited a loud cheering section for her and Bothe as propelling her effort.

“Actually, I thought I was going to be a lot more nervous; I was definitely more nervous at sectionals, just because I wanted to get down here. Actually throwing down here was less stressful and took the pressure off,” the sophomore said. “And just having everyone supporting me was really great. Even Jenae’s family was cheering me on, which I thought was amazing.

“I’m happy with how I threw, but not in the finals.

I think I could’ve done a lot better. I’ll take this experience to next year.”

Her Cardinals teammate Letrese Buisker tied for sixth in the 1A high jump, which was moved indoors to Lantz Fieldhouse, adjacent to O’Brien Field. The high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault were held inside because of inclement weather.

Buisker was one of 12 high jumpers who all cleared 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch) to qualify for the finals.

She then hit her first four heights on Saturday with only one miss, clearing 1.57 meters (5-1¾) before bowing out with three misses at 1.60 meters (5-3).

“I did a good job, and it was a good day to jump for me,” the sophomore said. “I’m very happy. It’s a great experience and I’m ready for next year. I know what to expect and I know that I can place higher and I’m just ready to get back here.”

Oregon senior claims title six years in the making after taking big lead in prelims

treynolds@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – After dreaming about it for six years, what was one more day for Oregon’s Jenae Bothe?

The senior thrower popped a big throw in the shot put preliminaries May 19 at the IHSA Class 1A State Track and Field Meet and led by more than 3 feet heading into Saturday’s finals.

And while she didn’t improve on that prelims throw of 13.17 meters (43 feet, 2½ inches) in her final three tosses, nobody else in the field got any closer as she clinched the state championship she had once only thought about in an offhand sort of way.

“Just overall, it’s always been on my mind yearround, but I never really thought it was going to happen,” she said. “Obviously everyone thinks about it occasionally, but it wasn’t until this season that I thought, ‘I can do this, and I want it.’”

She wanted it so badly that she hit her biggest throw in about a month in the prelims, and could taste the title as she left the ring Thursday.

But with the finals not until Saturday, she had a whole day to sit and think about it, and figure out her plan of attack in the finals.

She decided the best thing to do was to just keep her foot on the accelerator.

“Keep the pressure on everybody else,” she said.

“I didn’t know how I would be feeling today – I’ve been sick all week – so I was just going to play to how the competition did. My mindset was just to set the tone and have people chase me.”

She set that tone with her first two throws in the finals, which were nearly a meter farther than anyone else at 12.73 and 12.83 meters. Her final throw covered 12.29 meters.

“I’m overall satisfied,” she said, when asked about following that game plan. “It would’ve been nice to hit a bigger one, but I’m OK with my throws today.”

It was such a dominant display that the only other girl to even make it past 12 meters – on either day – was runner-up Kayla Braun of Sparta. Her second throw of the finals was a 12.12, and her 12.21 (40 feet, 3/4 inch) from prelims carried over for her best mark.

Bothe said her best memory of the half-decadelong road to her state championship is the Sunday practices.

But when she looks back on it in the future, she’ll always remember the picture-perfect ending on her final day as a Hawk.

“It’s just a really nice way to wrap up my high school career, to know that I can do it and I will do it when I set my mind to it,” she said. “This is six years in the making, so to make it happen is great.”

She came through with another bigtime performance May 20 at the Class 2A Rock Falls Regional championship against Rock Falls, tossing a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks in a 6-0 win.

“It feels great,” Trampel said of advancing to sectionals. “I really didn’t think we’d get this far, honestly.”

“Obviously, winning regionals is one of the best feelings in the world.

Everyone is so happy, and our team is like a family,” Oregon’s Reilee Suter said. “All our hard work is paying off, and it’s good to be moving forward.

Moving on to sectionals, we are confident and locked down. Our mental game is on point, and I can’t wait.”

The first four innings of the Big Northern Conference matchup were a pitchers’ duel, as Katie Thatcher and Trampel went back and forth, ending innings in three or four at-bats.

The Hawks (25-9) began building

momentum in the top of the second, getting one run on the board after a Trampel leadoff single and a Lena Trampel two-out RBI single.

“I think it was a huge relief to be the first to score in the game,” Suter said.

“It boosted our confidence, and we just wanted to get more and more runs.

Anything can happen, so the more runs, the better. Their defense made it challenging. They have a solid defense.”

Trampel worked 1-2-3 innings in all but the fifth, and Oregon’s defense played soundly behind her, securing several flyballs to end innings early and stay in control of the game throughout. Rock Falls reached base only twice and never advanced a runner past second.

In the top of the fourth, Mia Trampel blasted a leadoff home run to center field, putting the Hawks ahead 2-0.

“When I hit the ball, it felt like nothing. It just felt like it was gone,” Trampel said. “I was almost touching first base when I saw a fan catch it past the fence.”

runs on five hits for a 6-0 lead.

Gracen Pitts led off the inning with a single between short and third, then stole second on a wild pitch and reached third on a Suter bunt single.

Bella Koertner bunted a single next to load the bases, and Liz Mois skipped a single off the ground, then off Thatcher’s glove, to bring in Pitts for a 3-0 advantage.

Suter came home on a dropped third strike in the next at-bat, and Jesse Suter slapped a two-run single

past second to score Koertner and Mois.

“It was very relieving because there’s a lot of pressure to do well pitching when I’m on the mound,” Trampel said of the four-run fifth inning. “And it was an insane amount of energy throughout the entire game.”

In the bottom of the fifth, Rock Falls’ Zoe Morgan grounded a single past second, but the Hawks’ defense turned in three quick outs to end the inning.

“Mia’s pitching was amazing. I love how she never gives up on a batter, she brings it her all every time,” Reilee Suter said. “She never gets down and always is focused on the next pitch.

Her strikeouts bring our team so much hype and get us pumped up. She’s literally amazing.”

Reilee Suter went 3 for 4, Mia Trampel went 2 for 4 with a solo home run, and Jesse Suter went 2 for 4 with a tworun single to lead Oregon hitters.

Morgan went 1 for 3 to lead Rock Falls at the plate.

Thatcher took the loss in a complete game, scattering 12 hits, conceding six runs, with six strikeouts and zero walks.

Big weekend for Oregon, Forreston softball, Hawk thrower

t was a big weekend for Oregon girls athletics with a softball win over No. 1 regional seed Rock Falls and a state championship by Jenae Bothe at the 1A track and field meet.

At the IHSA state basketball tournament, a King and Queen-of-the-Hill is determined for its 3-point competition. The winners from each class get together for another round of shooting to determine the best in all the state.

It is rare that kids from different classes compete against one another in the postseason. In track and field, athletes have their own classes, but marks can be compared for best overall in the state.

Jenae Bothe of Oregon won the 1A shot put with a 13.17 mark. That was better than everyone in 2A and all but three throwers in 3A. If you took her personal best of 13.70, it would rank No. 2 overall for all of Illinois this season. Impressive stuff for someone who had the state title all but wrapped up in the prelims, but still came out in finals and had all three of her attempts go further than anyone else threw.

The softball team, with most of the same girls from last year, repeated as regional champs. In the accompanying article by Dan Wussow, you can read just how dominant their win was.

Hitting, fielding, pitching, especially pitching – it all came together for the Hawks. It was a true masterpiece on the mound by Mia Trampel, who aided her cause at the plate with a home run.

With the quality of pitching in regional finals and beyond, hits are hard to come by. For sisters Reilee and Jesse Suter to combine for 5-for-8 batting against RF’s ace speaks volume of their batting abilities.

Writing this days before the paper comes out, I don’t have knowledge of the sectional against Richmond-Burton and possibly Marengo. With how hot Oregon (25-9) is, I don’t think

either team is that excited to have to play them.

Congratulations to 19-4 Forreston softball for also advancing to the sectional. As a No 1 seed, they needed a strong mound performance by Kara Erdmann in the 2-0 win over Durand (12-8) at the regional.

On paper, that sectional with Pearl City, Orangeville and Dakota looks wide open.

Was it a surprise that No. 2 seed Forreston’s baseball team lost by such a wide margin to No. 3 Sterling Newman? Not really and the Comets may have felt a bit disrespected for being seeded lower.

However, in that 1A sectional, 16 teams were from the NUIC and only two from the TRAC, where Newman was from. So often in the seeding process, a particular league will show bias to their own members.

You have to have the bats and the Cardinals didn’t have them against Newman. Nonetheless, another standout year for a program that has gone 167-44 since 2015.

How about the Oregon baseball team giving Rock Falls all they could handle in a narrow 4-3 loss at the regional. That should give this young team confidence heading into next spring.

Did you know that Hawks baseball coach Nate Girton’s wife Kim has replaced John Cain as athletic trainer?

Welcome aboard Kim. Walking into the 1A boys track sectional at Oregon, I was surprised to see only e-tickets being accepted. I didn’t ask how things went, but have to think a number of people weren’t prepared to pay that way.

A wave of the future? Maybe, but not everyone was happy with that arrangement.

“It didn’t go too bad,” Oregon AD Mike Lawton said. “We had about 450 tickets bought through GoFan and a little over 100 people pay cash at the gate.”

Last week, I mentioned that 2010 was the last time any girls track athlete from Forreston or Polo scored at the state meet. That was incorrect. In 2013, Mykil Baker of Polo was seventh in the discus. The combined 8.5 points scored by Syndi Badertscher and Letresse Buisker this year were the most since 2006, when Forreston and Polo both scored eight points each as separate programs.

Forreston scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie and beat Durand 2-0 to win the Class 1A Durand Regional on May 20.

Rylee Broshous and Brooke Boettner had RBIs, and Kara Erdmann and Adriana Miller each had a hit for Forreston (19-4). Erdmann pitched a three-hitter, striking out six and walking three.

The Cardinals beat Pearl City 2-1 on a walk-off homer by Broshous in the 12th inning in the South Beloit Sectional semifinal Tuesday.

Fritz served in the Navy out of high school before getting his Television and Radio Communications Degree for DeVry Technical Institute. He started his working career while at DeVry as an organ repairman for Weaver Music. It was there he met his purpose in life, Bonnie. Fritz spent the next 25 or so years working as an TV Engineer, first for WLS-TV, Channel 7 in Chicago, and then for McDonalds Corporation before retiring in the

Hoovler’s vehicle struck Smith’s vehicle on the passenger side, causing disabling damage to both vehicle. Hoolver and a single passenger were uninjured.

Smith and a passenger were transported to the a nearby hospital for suspected minor injuries. Smith was cited for failure-to-yield at intersection and given a return court date.

May 18 Willie Dotson, 56, of Beloit, Wisconsin, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 111 southbound at 5:35 p.m. for an equipment violation. Dotson also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no front license plate. Dotson was released on a signature I-Bond and given a return court date.

May 20 Allan Hauhia, 52, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to 135 S. Pine Street in Stillman Valley for a welfare check on a driver asleep at the wheel at approximately 2:36 p.m. Hauhia also was cited for improper parking in the roadway.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

May 21 Courtney Delgado, 27, of Chana, was arrested for driving on a revoked drivers license after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39. Delgado was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dakotah Bell, 27, of Rockford, was arrested for driving on a suspended drivers license after being stopped for speeding on Illinois Route 251 near Davis Junction. Bell was released on an I-Bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Lee Dallas III, 29, of Rockford, was arrested for driving on a suspended drivers license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 110 at approximately 7:15 p.m. Dallas

also was cited for driving while license suspended and illegal window tint and released on a $2,500 I-Bond. During the traffic stop, deputies identified the front seat passenger as Jamie Lozano, 20, of Rockford.

Lozano was arrested on an in-state warrant.

Lozano was issued a notice to appear and released at the scene.

Franklin Melgar-Rodriguez, 20, of Tennessee, was arrested for no valid drivers license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 106 northbound at approximately 10:01 p.m. Deputies stopped Melgar-Rodriguez for an inoperable registration light.

Melgar-Rodriguez was released on an I-Bond and was given a future court date.

May 22 At approximately 11:17 a.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle side-by-side UTV crash on East Husking Peg Road near the intersection of Rocky Hollow Road. The vehicle was traveling west on East Husking Peg Road and lost control. The driver and only occupant, a 16-year-old from Rochelle, was transported by Ashton ambulance to KSB Hospital for minor injuries. The crash

remains under investigation.

Rebekah Sherwood, 45, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a single vehicle in the ditch east of the Macklin and Walden roads intersection in Byron at approximately 7:49 p.m. Sherwood also was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed. Sherwood was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

May 23 John Koltunchik, 48, of Dixon, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 7000 block of East Flagg Road at approximately 4:30 p.m. Koltunchik also was cited for speeding. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
