The sun and warm breezes made it a very pleasant weekend. God has created a beautiful and wonderful world. The spring season brings many new changes to our area. For all of creation, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Judy Riffle. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout shared her message for the morning. For the children’s message, Suzanne spent time with one of our young friends, Harper.

After church, we gathered for our quarterly board meeting. It is exciting to make plans for the future months. We have had a long time to dream and now we can start putting the plans into action.

On Friday evening, I joined the students and parents at the Forreston High School for the annual Fun Fair, prepared by the elementary school parent organization. It was great to see some of my students and their families enjoying the games and fun.

This week we started an alphabet countdown with our third grade students. Each day has a different task according to the letters of the alphabet. We are getting close to the end of the year with less than 26 days to go.

On April 24, during the Polo Fire Departments breakfast fundraiser, It shows Polo Lions Club president Chris Casper handed a donation to Assistant Chief Brent Shipman for equipment.

One year ago, I finished my last assignment and earned my degree. Now, I am about to complete my first year of teaching.

I remember feeling anxious as I waited to hear about a job in this new career. With God’s help, I ended up exactly where I needed to be.

This past Saturday morning, my son, Matt, called from Hawaii. We indulged in a very long phone call. Besides sharing in some laughs, Matt told me of his new plan for when he leaves the Marines. I am confident he will go where he will do the most good.

Soon after I hung up with Matt, I received a call from my son, Clint. Another very long conversation finished out my early afternoon. Both boys were not expecting to move so soon. They may have different opinions about the move, but I will be glad to have them so close.

With my children living far from home, I have started to make changes to their rooms. The spare beds are still here, but I have been making use of the rest of the space. With the news that Clint will be coming home, I have to take time to prepare.

Preparations will include moving my things to another space to make room for Clint. I will probably need to restock my

I want to make a comfortable place for my children because I love them so much.

When we love someone, we try to do our best for them. Our love for Jesus inspires us to prepare a space and do our best for Him. We prepare our church in special ways to Him. More importantly, we prepare our hearts. We allow our hearts to be filled with forgiveness and love which makes it hard to house resentment and ill feelings towards others.

Keeping and preparing a special place for Jesus is a daily exercise. Just like an unused space can collect clutter, our hearts can easily become cluttered with the hurt that we encounter. His love helps strengthen our hearts to face anything that comes our way.

I hope to see you next week when we gather on Sunday morning for worship.

Our family welcomes you and your family to join us in a time of praise and prayer. All are welcome in our place of worship. We have prepared a place for each of you.

Park district to ‘move forward’ after investigation

azoellner@shawmedia.com Six months after a former Oregon Park District employee first publicly claimed the district was a “hostile work environment,” OPD commissioners have declared it is time to move on.

“The Park Board takes these allegations very seriously,” commissioners wrote in an April 12 letter. “It does so because it is fully committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, rewarding and enjoyable workplace. The Board is equally committed to ensuring that its financial procedures are legally compliant, and its practices are maintained to the highest standards, with integrity and transparency.”

On Oct. 12, Amanda Zimmermann went before commissioners and said she experienced “years of misconduct and psychological harassment.” She said she resigned from her job as the park district’s recreation program manager on Sept. 17 after more than five-and-a-half years because of “ongoing poor leadership and the continued lack of accountability” faced by upper management.

Zimmermann blamed OPD Executive Director Erin Folk and OPD Superintendent of Recreation Tina Ketter, and called for Folk’s resignation or termination.

In a 19-minute prerecorded video, Zimmermann described a stress-filled work environment where she walked on eggshells, was subjected to personal attacks and felt the need to pre-

“A reasonable person would define that as a hostile working environment,” she said directly to board members after the video concluded.

Minutes from subsequent OPD board meetings Zimmermann also alleged misuse of OPD credit cards by Folk. Zimmermann cited multiple documents she obtained via the Freedom of Information Act when she made the allegations.

“After evaluating the allegations of a negative work environment and poor employee morale, the Park Board arranged for an independent work-

place climate investigation related to these allegations to be conducted by legal counsel,” according to the April 12 letter. “The investigator was given complete access to all full-time employees. All employees were encouraged to be candid in their comments, and we thank them for providing honest feedback.”

The workplace climate investigation is finished, and Park Board members have reviewed the findings and deliberated, the letter states.

“The Board is satisfied that there is no evidence to indicate the existence of any unlawful workplace discrimination or harassment,” commissioners

wrote. “The Board did identify the need for certain remedial action to address the legitimate concerns and input provided by our current staff.

Specifically, in addition to positive culture-building actions, Park District leadership will participate in management coaching and training.”

The April 12 letter does not identify specific individuals by name.

Commissioners also investigated the allegations of financial wrongdoing, but are “satisfied that no material impropriety has occurred,” the letter states. OPD has received favorable audits every year since its creation, according to the letter.

“Further, the Park Board is satisfied that employees’ expenses on behalf of the District are fully and appropriately documented and in total compliance with applicable law and the policies of the Oregon Park District,” commissioners wrote.

“It is time for the Oregon Park District to move forward,” commissioners wrote. “Since September of 2021, the District has responded to 35 FOIA requests, all from four individuals closely aligned with the group raising these concerns. The Park District’s small team has responded to these requests at significant financial cost and resulting in a diversion of manpower within the organization to meet the demand. The Park Board looks forward to resuming its work providing for the recreational needs of the residents of Oregon.”

Zimmermann did not return calls for further comment.

Judge denies 18-year-old’s request to return to high school as child pornography case continues

ehinton@oglecountynews.com An 18-year-old’s request to have his bond modified to allow him to return to Polo Community High School to finish his senior year was denied Monday.

Clayton A. Davis, 18, of Polo, who is charged with four counts of reproducing child pornography and four counts of possession of child pornography, will be able to finish his classes online through a supervised program offered by the Polo School District.

Judge John B. Roe made the ruling after Polo Superintendent Kelley Mandrell testified that the school district could not provide adequate supervi-

sion to allow Davis to return to school while avoiding contact with other students.

Mandrell said the school district could provide Davis with a Chromebook through which he could use he Apex Learning program to earn his remaining credits in order to graduate.

Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten said the online program has safeguards that allows administrators to see what screens students were using.

Davis is charged with using the Signal app on his phone to possess and share videos and photos of a child he knew or should have known was younger than 13 and who was engaged

in sexual activity.

He was charged March 9 and pleaded not guilty March 16 to the felony offenses.

He posted $30,000 of his $300,000 bond, and is currently livClayton A. Davis ing with his family in Polo. A condition of his bond includes no contact with anyone younger than 18. He is also prohibited from using electronic devices to engage in social media or to view social media sites.

On Monday, Davis’ attorney, Cristina M. Buskohl of Sterling, asked the court to allow Davis to return to school

in-person to complete his senior year and also allow him to attend 2022 commencement with his classmates. She subpoenaed Mandrell requiring her to appear in court to testify as to why Davis was not being allowed to return to school.

“There has been no expulsion as far as I know,” Buskohl said. “He is still a student at Polo Community High School.”

Mandrell said there had been no disciplinary issues with Davis in high school or when he was a student in junior high.

She said school officials were not in favor of him returning to in-person

Very old and very lovely baby quilt returns home to Polo

I

had a nice call from Maxine Osborne and she remembered Lola Miller since she did her hair each week. You do get to know people when you have a relationship such as a beauty operator.

Then I had a call from Bob Toms and he knew the family.

On Friday Susan had stayed with me and on Saturday morning we joined Bob and Shirley Heath and Bud Woodin for breakfast downtown. It was good to get together for a good visit. I am just getting out after my knee surgery and I get tired.

As we left the restaurant, we drove by the museum and there was the package by the door from Shirley in Port Richey, Florida.

We opened it up when we got home and the quilt is old but very lovely. It states in the corner: “Lola Miller, Feb. 7, 1916 – Feb. 2, 1993. Baby quilt made

by Grace Long Miller, Ogle County, IL for her granddaughter, Lola M. Miller.

Now owned by Shirley (Mohr) Thillan, a friend of Lola, Rockford, IL. Purchased at Lola’s estate sale in 1993 at Polo, IL.”

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf It was nice that Shirley had dated it.

Bob Toms told me that Lola died in 1993 of cancer. So her quilt and German Hummel have come back to Polo.

The Hummel was carefully wrapped and placed in the quilt.

The Hummel is very lovely and now will go over to Aplington House along with the quilt. I will need to type up information to go with them.

I am always impressed with the stories of things that come back to Polo.

Years ago when I started in the museum I went to a meeting on how to have a successful museum.

The person sharing information impressed upon us that we needed to dig out the stories of what went on in the history of our communities. I feel this to be true. People love to hear the unusual stories.

Today was the last day for Pastor Terrie Wilder of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. She came in 2007 and was such an integral part of my life since she officiated at the burials of my brother, sister, and my husband.

The church was packed and that was good to see all those we have not seen since all this COVID stuff. The music was outstanding with Cheryl and Michelle Goeking, and Beth Wiegmann.

Beth sang Mozart’s “Alleluia” that she had sung at Pastor Terrie and Oran’s wedding a number of years ago. I kept asking her when she was going to do that again. So she did it today and that was so very appropriate. I loved it.

Then we had a potluck in the basement for all and the basement was full.

Polo Historical Society meeting is May 4 at Polo Senior Center The next meeting for the Polo Historical Society will be Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. at the Polo Senior Center.

It was wonderful to see so many stay for a lovely meal. Food was abundant and so many good choices. Lutherans were always known for their good food and that certainly was obvious today.

Wrenley Dawson, the 4-month- old daughter of Shannon Gipe and Tom Dawson, was baptized today. Shannon’s sister, Shauna Gipe was Wrenley’s sponsor.

I had Shannon and Shauna in first grade and it was good to see them all.

Where have the years gone?

The sun was shining, the day was warm, and spring is here with the daffodils blooming. It was a great day.

The program will be on the Peek Home with several speakers taking part. Tom Nelson will be there as a former Peek resident. Refreshments will be served.

Taft’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument dedicated in 1916

BY OTTO DICK The construction of this monument was started in 1914 and dedicated during WWI in 1916.

Lorado Taft contributed a year’s work and the county paid for the actual expenses of $21,000.

Taft was impressed with the Civil War Memorial Hall located on the upper floor of the Ogle County Courthouse and he recommended to the County Board a more permanent memorial located on the southeast corner of the courthouse lawn.

This memorial features three larger than life bronze figures with an infantryman looking north towards home, a cavalry soldier looking south and a classical female figure with her arms outstretched holding laurel wreaths which represents America.

This monument was dedicated Sept.

7, 1916. The headlines of the Oregon newspaper read “great audience witnesses pleasing and impressive program-four thousand people were present regardless of the heavy downpour of rain during the morning hour.”

At this memorial 60 veterans marched with the band around the courthouse and formed a line of honor near the veiled monument.

azoellner@shawmedia.com Dirk Miller, 55, of Mt. Morris, was identified by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office as the driver who was killed when his car crashed into two other vehicles on Monday afternoon on Illinois Route 2 north of Oregon.

Miller was pronounced dead at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford after Byron EMS transported him there after the crash, the sheriff’s report said.

A preliminary investigation showed Miller was southbound on Illinois Route 2 at approximately 1:01 p.m. when he crossed the center line into the northbound lane and struck two oncoming vehicles, the report states.

One of those vehicles was a 15-passenger Illinois Central school bus driven by Teresa Gabriel, 58, of Dixon.

Gabriel and a passenger, Connie Sloter, 34, of Dixon, were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries; a juvenile passenger was uninjured and released to a family member at the scene.

The van-like bus was carrying two adults — the driver and a monitor — and a child of one of the adults, said

It was an out-of-district vehicle, meaning it was traveling through the area, and was not from the Oregon, Byron or Dixon school districts, Price said. It had come from the company’s Dixon bus lot and was headed to Rockford, he said.

The driver of the third vehicle, Kiara Franklin, 22, of Rockford, was transported to Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s report.

Two juvenile passengers also were taken to the hospital for observation.

it was incorrectly reported that Ogle County Board members approved salary increases for three elected positions.

The proposed salary increases for the county clerk and recorder, treasurer and sheriff for fiscal years 2023, 2024, 2025 and

2026 were not approved. Board members voted 14-9 to send the recommendations back to committee for further consideration.

Mandrell said she was also concerned that another student may say something to Davis if he attended school in person. “We are entrusted with the safety of our children. Every day that is our main concern,” she said citing the nature of the charges against Davis.

Buskohl asked Mandrell if school officials would allow Davis to return to the track team and attend the graduation ceremony on May 29 if an adult, provided at no cost to the school district, was able to supervise him.

“Would that be approved by the district?”, asked Buskohl.

“No, we co-op track with Forreston and that’s a different school district,” said Mandrell noting that any nonschool member serving as a supervisor would have to be approved by the

Polo School Board and undergo a background check.

Buskohl said Davis is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“He has no disciplinary record. He’s just a few weeks away from graduation,” Bushel said. “Sufficient safeguards could be put in place. He does not pose any risk to these students. If this court orders him to do something he will do it.”

Leisten said the bond conditions for Davis were standard for the type of charges levied. “We have to consider the risk to the community,” said Leisten adding that school officials would be unable to monitor his return to the school. “This is too risky of a situation to allow him back on school grounds.”

Buskohl said Davis should be allowed to return to school as long as he was supervised and his charges were not related to the school or Polo students.

“The crimes alleged did not happen in the school,” she said. “He is not accused of anything in the Polo schools or anything that put a student at risk.

Roe said his decision had to be based on the seriousness of the charges and the rights of the accused.

“When I balance everything I will deny the motion in part, but will modify it to allow the internet portion so he can attend school online for educational purposes only,” Roe said.

He also denied allowing Davis to attend the graduation ceremony in person. “I’m not changing the orders… no contact with anyone under 18 with the exception of his sister,” Roe said.

Davis’ next court date is June 27 for a pretrial hearing.

She was employed in various work areas including social work, newspaper editing, and education. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with Paul to see her children and grandchildren.

Annette is survived by her children David (Debbie) Flannery, Stacy (Devon) Taylor, Gerald (April) Flannery, Dorraine (Kirk) Robbins, Brian (Janna) Johnson, Barry (Janese) Johnson, Jonathan (Fern) Flannery, Robert (Yvonne) Flannery, Sara (Lewis) Cox, Jennifer (Milind) Johnson -Talekar, and Julie (Terry) Burton. She is also survived by many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; and her daughter, Constance Ruth Johnson. Annette is also preceded in death by her siblings - Richard Charles Olson, Ruth Ettalyn Olson Simpkins, Alice Louise Olson Tenzinger, Walter L. Olson, and Arlene Donelly. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A memorial service for Annette was held Friday, April 22, 2022 at Phillips Ashley Valley Funeral Home, 410 North 800 West, Vernal, Utah. Interment was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery in Vernal, Utah.

Annette Lorraine Olson Johnson Lund passed away on April 16, 2022 at the age of 85.

Annette was born on June 22, 1936 to Ruth Frances Carlson Olson and Richard Carl Olson in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Annette married Lloyd Emmitt Johnson on June 28, 1957 with whom she had seven children. Many years later she found love again and married Paul Ronald Lund on March 28, 2003. They were together until his passing on May 9, 2019.

Annette loved her Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Annette loved music and was instrumental in developing that same passion in her children. She was an amazing cook and an incredibly talented cake decorator, making wedding cakes for many friends and family.

Annette was especially skilled at knitting and crocheting and won many state fair blue ribbons for her Scandinavian sweaters and doilies. Pretty much every member of the family has received crocheted blankets, doilies, toys, and baby clothes which Annette

SPECIAL EVENTS

A spring-theme quilt show will be held April 29 and 30 at the Rock River Center in beautiful Oregon, Illinois. Country Crossroads Quilt Guild will have a display of over 150 quilts on Friday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 pm.

Admission is $5 per person, which includes a raffle ticket for a special quilt made by guild members from a Monique Jacobs pattern called All About Amour. Ages 10 and younger are free.

Monique of Open Gate Quilts will have a booth with her patterns and to talk about her designs.

Quilt shop vendors will also be available with booths of fabrics and tools for sewers and quilters.

The show will have a large display of quilts of all kinds, as well as a bed turning with special ones that have a unique and interesting story.

A food truck will be stationed by the front door of the show with lunch items for sale. Benchwarmers, a well-known restaurant from Freeport, is serving food both days. Also available is a scissors sharpener service, Clark’s, to sharpen tools while you wait.

There will be a large boutique of handmade quilted items for sale.

“This is a great opportunity to buy gifts for upcoming birthdays and special occasions, including Mom’s Day, or for yourself,” said Cindy Pingitore a guild member of Country Crossroads Quilt Guild. “This is a perfect outing for families, groups

and those interested in learning about quilts. A special display of quilts will be featured from our All About Love quilt challenge.”

Members of the guild were given a specific piece of fabric with the challenge to make a small wall hanging featuring that design. They will be on display, as well as a Pizza Box challenge. This is a challenge where participants can include specific fabric, colors or quilt block designs. They exchange boxes with other members of the group every month at meetings.

“A pizza box is used because it is a good size portable container for the exchanges. The end result is a group of blocks to use however you want,” said Pingitore. “A quilt appraiser will be available for anyone wanting an official appraisal of their quilts for a fee.

Information about the guild will be available and new members are welcome. You do not need to be a quilter to join. We have monthly meetings with speakers, activities, fun workshops and special events.”

The Rock River Center is located at 810 South 10th Street in Oregon.

Additional raffle tickets can be purchased at the show, and the winner will be chosen at the conclusion of the show. The winner does not need to be present.

The First Fridays Open Mic returns on May 6 to K’s Sports Bar in Oregon.

The monthly event attracts many talented performers, but musicians and singers of all skill levels find acceptance from its supportive audience. Each performer is allowed 15 minutes, and everyone can also join in on a jam session at the end of the show.

The show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, although a jar is available for donations.

Sign-up for performers is at 6:45.

K’s Sports Bar is located at 408 East Washington (Illinois Route 64) in Oregon, close to several restaurants.

Oregon wins an 11-inning pitchers’ duel over Dixon

treynolds@shawmedia.com DIXON — For 10 innings they battled, back and forth, two of the top softball teams in the Big Northern Conference trading blows and big outs in a pitcher’s duel Tuesday at Reynolds Park.

But in the 11th, Oregon managed to score a run on a two-out error, and Dixon couldn’t answer in the bottom of the inning as the Hawks pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Duchesses.

“It was just a fantastic high school ballgame, I don’t know what else to say,” Oregon coach Nate Rogers said.

“Just a great game. I’m proud of the girls for fighting for 11 innings, and give Dixon credit, too. Just fantastic.”

Reilee Suter’s two-run home run with two outs in the top of the third gave Oregon a 2-0 lead, but Dixon answered in the bottom of the fourth when Sam Tourtillott and Anna Kate Phillips scored on wild pitches to tie the game 2-2.

“It’s taking a deep breath and kind of making sure the fielders are all going to work together and just play an amazing game,” she said. “For me, I use the pressure and stress to kind of fuel my pitching, so in a way, it kind of helped.

“And I’m so thankful to have my teammates behind me. I really couldn’t pitch as well as I do without them.”

Her defense made all the difference, and at least four sensational plays thwarted Dixon rallies – and in one case, literally took two runs off the board.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Tourtillott singled with two outs and Phillips followed with a shot deep to center field. Oregon’s Bella Koertner kept going back until she was at the fence, and she snagged Phillips’ fly ball for the third out before tumbling over the fence.

Koertner also made a diving catch in shallow center field in the second inning, and third baseman Ella Dannhorn and second baseman Jesse Suter also made running catches on pop flies that looked destined to find a gap in the Hawks defense.

eventually drew a walk and took second without a throw to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out.

But just like she had in the third – when Dixon’s Ava Valk was hit by a pitch and Olivia Mowery beat out an infield single to start the inning – Mia Trampel struck out the next three hitters to escape without further damage.

She stranded 11 Dixon runners on base, six of them at second or third – including those runners on third in the seventh and ninth, when the Duch-

esses couldn’t get that key two-out hit to win the game.

“They made some great plays, but we have to execute timely hitting,” Rogers said. “A couple times we had runners on base and we didn’t come through, and we have to have those timely hits.”

“Very nerve-wracking,” Reilee Suter said about those late-game situations. “We talk a lot about getting out of our heads, because getting in your head does nothing but mess you up. So we stayed out of our heads, and just kept picking each other up and cheering each other on, and I think that helped a lot.”

In the top of the 11th, Oregon (13-6, 6-3 BNC) finally managed to scratch out a run. Liz Mois blooped a fly ball to short right field, and it dropped in for a double. Jarrett struck out the next hitter, then got a groundout to first for the second out; Mois moved to third on that play.

Dannhorn then hit a grounder to second, but the ball was bobbled and the speedy Oregon freshman beat out the throw as Mois crossed home plate with the go-ahead run.

“The defense was really good, and it’s just the funny nature of softball that it was such a good defensive game up to that point, then one kind of got away from them on a tough in-between hop and we were able to break the tie and get the win,” Rogers said.

more, because it was such a great catch. Obviously we were pumped about that, and when they got runners on base, we just shook it off and moved to the next play.”

“We just had to keep moving forward,” Jarrett said about Dixon’s reaction to the Oregon web gems. “We knew they were going to make plays and we were going to make plays, so they make the next play, then it’s our turn.”

Suter’s home run in the third inning came right after the running catch by Dannhorn and the diving catch by Koertner. Lena Trampel singled after a long at-bat, then Ava Hackman bunted her to second. Mia Trampel grounded out to move her sister to third, then Suter crushed an 0-1 pitch deep over the center field fence.

“It was like in the perfect spot for me, and I got good contact,” she said.

“That gave us a lot of energy, picked us up a lot, because we needed the runs.”

“Elle was hitting her spots all game, right where we called them,” Dixon coach Candi Rogers said. “That home run, that’s the one pitch where she missed her spot.”

dwussow@shawmedia.com DIXON – The Dixon and Oregon girls soccer teams played a tightly contested Big Northern Conference game Tuesday evening up until the last 10 minutes, when the Duchesses scored two goals to pull away for a 3-1 home win at Sauk Valley Community College.

Freshman midfielder/forward Carlie Cook put Dixon on the scoreboard in the first few minutes, taking a crossgoal pass from senior midfielder/forward Rylee Pfoutz on the left side of the goal and burying it in the back left of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Duchesses held a slight advantage in time of possession in the first half, and nearly extended their lead with about five minutes to go when sophomore defender Emily Smith lofted a penalty-kick ball up near the middle of the crossbar. But Oregon senior goalkeeper Taylar Rufer leapt into the air, tipped the ball down and caught it just short, keeping the Dixon lead at 1-0 heading into halftime.

The Duchesses attempted a few more shots on goal in the second half, breaking through twice in the last 10

minutes. With about seven minutes to go, sophomore midfielder/forward Katie Drew sneaked a low shot past Rufer into the back left of the net.

With about five minutes left, Pfoutz took a pass from Drew and knocked it into the back right of the net, extending the Dixon lead to a comfortable 3-0.

Oregon freshman midfielder Anna Stender answered in the final minute, burying a shot in the right side of the goal to prevent the shutout, but the Hawks ran out of time to complete a comeback.

“The biggest difference was, we came out a little slow and whiffed on a ball that was going across the box, and they scored in the first few minutes of the game,” Oregon coach Seger Larson said. “Other than that, it was pretty even throughout the rest of the game until we let that second goal in. Once that second goal went in, we kind of dropped our heads. We’ve given up goals in the last 10 minutes too often now and lost games.”

Lengquist finished with 11 saves for the Duchesses.

Rufer had seven saves for the Hawks.

Forreston baseball, softball teams off to strong starts ... again

A

s expected, the baseball and softball teams from Forreston are off to strong starts.

The boys have dominated the conference fore several years and the girls aren’t too far behind.

It was nice to see the Greenfield clan recognized in an article in the Rockford Register star last week. It touched upon the fact that nine cousins from that family are playing either baseball or softball for Forreston and are quite proficient at it.

Unlike schools where transfers become a means for attaining athletic success, Forreston has always maintained purity in its homegrown talent.

It’s been that way forever and is a testament to all the good families in the German Valley, Leaf River and Forreston area.

In other Forreston news, Kara Erdmann is no longer headed to Michigan State to play volleyball. Instead, the star libero will play for UW Milwaukee.

D-I athletics can be cruel and Erdmann found out the hard way when a new coach was hired at MSU two months ago. That coach did not share the same enthusiasm as the previous coach who had recruited Erdmann.

Unfortunately for Erdmann, she

When things started to fall apart with the new coach, any hopes of playing in the Big 10 evaporated, as those squads had all their recruiting locked up.

I’m told that most of volleyball recruiting is done by the U-17 (age) club scene, which was the case for Erdmann. Indeed, she was all set for MSU, but big time colleges are more than about sports. They are about big business and incoming recruits can be pawns.

However, one never knows what the future holds and this could end up being a blessing.

••• Could it be two state champs in a row at Oregon in the shot put? After a school record 44-11 3/4 by Jenae Bothe last Tuesday, it is sure looking that she may follow in Breanna Noon’s footsteps. At the time, Bothe’s mark was

nearly six feet better than the No. 2 in 1A and only a few inches away from the best in all of Illinois.

Working the pole vault, I rarely have a chance to see the throwers, but fortunately, there was a lull at the vaulting pit and I wandered over the shot ring just as Bothe made her mark.

It looked nearly flawless and even she said afterward how easy it seemed to come. That is how shot putting and discus should look – with very little effort being made.

The total process is far from easy though. Bothe has spent the past four years with Hall of Fame throwing coach Doug Engel perfecting her craft.

Hardly any kid in Illinois possesses this blending of athletic ability and learned physical behavior.

Throwing heavy implements is more of a delicate art than one of brute strength. When it is done right, it truly is artistry in motion.

Initially, there was some confusion on what the proper mark was, as Illinois is one of only two states mandated to use metric measuring by their state association.

Instead of the easily understood feet and inches, the IHSA makes us use metrics to measure field events. Their reasons (avoiding fractions, be more in line with colleges and ease in using lasers) are all lame.

When people look at results, they do not identify with metrics and become confused. In effect, the IHSA is harming the sport by lack of identification.

As someone who participated in Illinois’ first-ever metric track meet back in 1976 at Princeton, I was influenced into thinking this concept of measuring would catch on. All of this went by the wayside, as citizens of this country balked at the idea of using metric measurements.

I am disappointed the IHSA is trying to revive an unwelcome idea.

For those looking for some good entertainment, the elite small-school boys track meet in northern Illinois will be held Friday at Oregon, with 19 teams entered. Field events at the Art Carlson Hawk Classic are scheduled for 4 p.m., with running events at 5:45. p.m.

April 20 At 8:37 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of W. Washington and N. 4th Street involving a 2008 Dodge driven by Jacob A. Kenney, 37, of Oregon, and a 2015 Dodge driven by Tracy L. Altherr, 25, of Forreston. Kenney was issued a citation for failure to yield turning left. There were no injuries.

April 21 Robert D. VanDyke, 41, of Oregon, was arrested at 4:32 p.m. for driving while license suspended. VanDyke was also issued a citation for operating a vehicle with an

expired registration. VanDyke was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 1200 block of Pines Road.

Taylor L. Yordy, 19, of Leaf River, was issued a citation at 6:54 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 600 block of S. 4th Street.

April 23 Melvin R. Wilton, 25, of Oregon, was arrested at 6:28 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a DUI charge. Wilton was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Natalie L. Brendal, 32, of Flagstaff, Arizona,

was issued a citation at 8:51 p.m. for speeding, 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 500 block of Gale Street.

April 24 Liam A. Dickson-Harriett, 18, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 12 a.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Jennifer R. Cahill, 24, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 12:01 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 3rd Street.

Illinois Route 38 and South Beck Road at approximately 2:56 a.m. for a reported two-vehicle crash. After investigation, Francisco O. Jeronimo, 23, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Jeronimo also was cited for leaving the scene of an accident, improper traffic lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and transporting an open container of alcohol.

April 19 Kayla McManus, 23, of Esmond, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding on Lindenwood Road. McManus was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

At approximately midnight, deputies responded to a driving complaint on Illinois Route 251 of a Ford F-150 all over the road.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop at East Flagg Road and Route 251. After a brief investigation, James C. Simmons, 46, of Blanket, Texas, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Simmons also was cited for failure to signal while turning.

Simmons was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Tyler M. Smith, 33, of Byron, was arrested

for possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl), possession of drug paraphernalia and improper container of cannabis/driver after a traffic stop near the intersection of West Second and North Lincoln streets in Byron at approximately 9:58 p.m. Smith also was cited for having inoperable taillights.

Smith was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 21 At approximately 4:03 p.m., deputies responded to the 4700 block of South Daysville Road. An investigation showed Patrick Siepka, 27, of Franklin Grove, was traveling northbound on South Daysville Road when he lost control of his vehicle and entered the east ditch. Siepka was not
