The Polo Community School District will host an open house at all three of its school buildings on Thursday, April 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Centennial Elementary’s open house will be from 5 to 6 p.m.; Aplington Middle School and Polo Community High School will have theirs from 6 to 7 p.m.

“This is a great chance to come out and see all the remodeling that was done at each of the schools this summer,” superintendent Kelly Mandrell said. “Hope to see you on April 28!”

The Polo Fire Protection District’s annual Spring Breakfast is set for Sunday, April 24.

Breakfast will be served at the firehouse – located at 206 S. Franklin Ave., Polo – from 7 a.m. to noon as both dine in and carryout. This year’s menu includes biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage links, pancakes, milk and orange juice. Donations will be accepted; the proceeds will go toward the purchase of new equipment.

The warm sunshine made it a beautiful start to Holy Week. Today’s celebration leads to much darker days. Even in the darkness, we know of the hope of the resurrection. For the precious gift of God’s Son, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Curly Hagemann and Elizabeth Eliott. For special music, our ladies group, accompanied by Deb Ohlwine, sang for Palm Sunday. I was happy to join in the group with Nancy Hopkins, Elizabeth Eliott, and Vicki Hay. For the children’s message, our young friends Amelia and Harper sang “Jesus Loves Me” while signing. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout and I worked with the girls over the past couple of weeks learning sign language for the song.

Pastor Suzanne shared her message for Palm Sunday, complete with times to wave our palm branches. We will be hosting a Maundy Thursday service this week at 7 p.m. at our church.. We will be celebrating the resurrection with a special service on Sunday morning.

BRIEF Polo Woman’s Garden Club to host perennial plant sale May 7

The Polo Woman’s Garden Club will be having its annual perennial plant sale on Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Polo Community High School AG department, located behind the high school.

This sale will be the same day as the opening of the Polo FFA Greenhouse.

All plants are dug from local gardens, so they are “proven winners.”

Polo Senior Center offers day trip to see dancing horse show

This past Tuesday evening, I attended the regular meeting of our PEO Chapter at the home of Carol Suits. For our program, we made Easter bonnets from paper plates and bowls. We shared many laughs throughout the evening as we worked on our projects.

It was so nice to catch up with my many sisters. Joining us from Pine Creek were Lisa Coffman, Maggie Henning, and Vicki Hay. Even the rainy weather couldn’t keep us from being together.

My two sons, Matt and Clint, are busy packing their things to make a permanent move. It seems their plans for coming home or not coming home change weekly. The latest news sounds like they will be home together this summer. I am looking forward to it.

I have learned to accept changed plans, especially when it comes to my kids. Teaching also requires me to adapt daily. I try to be prepared and ready for the many changes that happen throughout the day.

Life throws us many curves. We have unexpected repairs to cars or houses, changes in health, or with our careers.

There are so many things out of our control. In this chaos, we are drawn to the one person who is a constant. We can always count on Jesus.

Many times, I have found myself feeling hopeless for all the changes I had to face. In those times, I would cry out to Jesus for help. Knowing He would be with me helped me to face each challenge.

Jesus is a friend that we can always count on. He understands all that we are going through here on earth. He is always here for us. We only need to call Him. When we become a Christian, we create and strengthen that friendship.

We don’t need to be lonely, scared or overwhelmed to call on our Friend. We can call on Him every day for every occasion.

His love will not be shaken. Over this next week, we learn about His incredible love for each of us.

I hope to see you next Sunday when we join together for a beautiful celebration of the resurrection. We gladly welcome you to worship with us in our little church in the country. We gladly welcome you and your family. I am wishing you all a very blessed Easter.

ehinton@oglecountynews.com A Malta man charged with the 2020 killings of a Mt. Morris woman and her unborn son is asking the court to reduce his $10 million bond to $500,000 because he was a career firefighter, has been a DeKalb County resident his entire life and is not a flight risk.

Matthew T. Plote, 34, of Malta appeared in Ogle County Court on April 8 with his attorney, John R. Kopp, of Geneva, who filed the bond reduction motion earlier in the week.

Plote is charged with killing Melissa Lamesch, 27, of Mt. Morris and her unborn son on Nov. 25, 2020, and then setting fire to her house to conceal their deaths.

Lamesch’s baby was due Nov. 27.

Plote faces four counts of first-degree murder, three of intentional homicide of an unborn child and one each of residential arson, aggravated domestic battery and concealment of a

The motion argues that his bond should be reduced because prior to the allegations, “the defendant was a career fireman who has resided in Malta, Sycamore and DeKalb his entire life.”

“The defendant has strong ties to the community, including his parents and extended family and friends who live in DeKalb County,” the motion reads.

It also states that he has “no criminal history,” “no history of violence” and “has never been charged with a crime and has no failures to appear in court.”

The motion also argues he “does not pose a flight risk” and “remained in the area and was cooperative with law enforcement throughout their investigation and when he was arrested.”

“The defendant’s family can post up to $50,000 to secure his release and help to ensure his appearance at each court date,” the motion states.

Lamesch was found about 4:30 p.m. after firefighters responded to 206 S. Hannah Ave., where they encountered heavy smoke and blaring smoke detectors.

She was found on the kitchen floor and pronounced dead at the scene, despite lifesaving measures.

Lamesch, a 2011 graduate of Oregon High School, was an EMT at Trace Ambulance Service in Tinley Park.

Prosecutors have yet to offer a possible motive in the case, but Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said at a March 9 news conference that Lamesch and Plote knew each other before the killing.

Workers were busy on Tuesday taking down the dam overlook at Oregon Park East. The Oregon Park District owns the park and is revamping the popular overlook, which provides visitors with a view of the Oregon dam from the east bank of the Rock River.

Construction begins on dam overlook in Oregon Oregon Park District workers have started replacing the overlook deck at Oregon Park East.

Construction is expected to last about four weeks, weather permitting.

The wood structure will be reshaped and replaced with composite decking to ensure a longer life span, park district officials said on their website.

“New railings will also be installed

and the landscaping will be updated.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but are confident the improvements will lead to a modernized look at Park East,” the post said.

The overlook is located on the east bank of the Rock River and provides visitors with an unobstructed view of the Oregon dam. The deck also included a picnic table and seating area.

Local chapter of Indivisible hosting Earth Day Challenge

The Oregon-Mt. Morris chapter of Indivisible will be holding an Earth Day Challenge on Friday, April 22.

Members of Indivisible will be walking neighborhoods in Oregon and Mt. Morris to pick up trash and help residents rake and pick up twigs and branches.

The walk will start at the community garden at the Brethren Church, 409 W.

Brayton Road, Mt Morris, and Mix Park, Webster and Fourth St’s., Oregon.

Some Indivisible members will be wearing orange vests while doing the cleanup and offering Ogle County Reusable Bags for those who say “Hi.” There also may be some oak seedlings provided by the Ogle County Waste Department for planting.

Indivisible is a political action group that promotes civic engagement. The Oregon/ Mt. Morris chapter of Indivisible has around a dozen active members and meets every fourth Thursday of the month. The public is welcome to attend meetings, sign up for the group page or join the list to get more information.

A new wedding and events venue on the west bank of the Rock River is expected to open in July.

River’s Edge Experience, located along First Street in Oregon, will offer a country townhouse theme once renovations are complete, owner Merlin Hagemann said. It will seat at least 200 people inside, and an outdoor patio space overlooking the river will seat another 200, he said.

“We’re going to have rentals [available] throughout the week,” Hagemann said.

River’s Edge Experience is located at 301 First St., Oregon, just south of the Illinois 64 bridge, across from the Ogle County Sheriff Department’s administrative offices.

Hagemann said they expect to launch a website sometime in the next couple of weeks.

We are working hard to get material on the Peek Home

T

his past week I am finally getting out to social things and it is nice to be places other than doctor’s offices or physical therapy.

Even though the evening was cold and rainy, PEO gathered at the new home of Tom and Carol Suits. It was good to get out among people again even though they had to help me get into the house.

I loved looking out the new windows across the fields. Even in the dark, the lights were neat to see in the distance. Out in Eagle Point, I had loved my big window in the back with a view across the field. I missed that the most after moving to town but I do love the activity of the town and being in the center of things.

Then I went with some of my teacher friends the next day out to the Pines for a delicious lunch and lots of visiting. The White Pines Park is always a neat place to go even though spring is not quite here yet.

As I sat in the dining room, I reflected back on the days when I was a waitress and bustled around getting people fed. My, that was a long time

I was glad to get back home, into my chair, and off my feet. It had been a good day. Now we are working hard to get material on Peek Home together for the Polo Historical Society’s next program.

This week I got a call from Ogle County and their program director.

She was going through their files and came upon my name as someone who had given programs on Peek Home.

She wondered if I was still doing that?

Strange to get a call like that right now.

I informed her that I was no longer on the circuit for program giving in the area but we are presently working

together on a presentation on Peek Home for our May program. Anyone is invited to come.

Linda stopped by with a notebook of all the residents she has now put together. It is all the information that was in a ledger as each matron of the home added names and information about each child. We really needed this ledger a long time ago but it has just surfaced in the past two or three years.

It was interesting just reading where many of the young people went as they changed addresses. One boy came to Peek Home in 1930 at the age of nine. In 1936 he was transferred to a home in Nebraska. The next notation stated that he rode his bike all the way from Nebraska to Peek Home in Illinois in four days.

The mileage was 550 miles. Did he get to stay here or was he taken back?

It did not say. But he eventually entered the University of Nebraska so I assume he had to go back to the home there. Interesting little story.

This week Bob Toms called to talk about those he remembered as having

lived in the Peek Home. He also was in touch with some who had moved to Dixon after bring raised in the Peek Home.

As a past milkman, he has lots of stories to tell about people and he enjoys remembering the past. We had a nice conversation about the years we spent in Polo High School as part of the Class of 1950. The years have gone by quickly and now we are lucky to still be navigating this wonderful world.

I finished this great week when granddaughter Lori came from Dubuque to spend Palm Sunday with me. We went to church and it was good seeing everyone again. It was a beautiful day to drive out to the Pines for a good lunch and reminiscence about past times spent in this lovely park.

For me, it was working there as a young girl and for Lori, it was time spent there as a girl camping with family.

Here’s a look at my two favorite houses in Ogle County

By OTTO DICK Around 1859 John Hayes built a square stone house built to withstand storm, earthquakes and other disasters.

The stone was hauled by oxcarts and cut on the premises. The lookout on the top was a place to observe the workers in the fields.

Three generations of the Hayes family lived there and now this home is owned by Melvin Nefstead.

This house (named the Everlasting House) is located at 2307 N. White Rock Road in White Rock Township. The west border of Whiteside Township is the Third Principal Meridian now Meridian Road. Six townships lie east of the Third Principal Meridian.

The intersection of Illinois Route 64 and White Rock Road is about one mile west of Kings.

It’s amazing that this house was built 24 years after Oregon was founded by John Phelps.

My second favorite house is also a square two-story house with a third story lookout to observe the workers.

This was built one year before the Hayes Everlasting House on White Rock Road.

This house built by Samuel Hitt in 1858 is also constructed of stone. All walls are 18 inches thick. Samuel built this house on his farm located three miles west of Mt. Morris.

He died before this house was com-

pleted.

Harry Kable’s book titled “Mt. Morris Past and Present” published a letter from Lincoln to Samuel Hitt. Samuel Hitt built the old stone house west of Mt. Morris.

This letter stated Lincoln spent a number of weekends at the Hitt home.

Samuel was the brother of Congress-

man Robert R. Hitt.

It’s amazing that these two square limestone houses 152 years old still stand today and give us a glance of early Ogle County History.

Much better news would be to learn that the researched, documented information of comparable area schools to OCUSD 220 indicates the lacking education level is concerning to school administrators and Board of Education.

Drawdown Ticket holders gathered at the VFW in Oregon on March 24 and enjoyed sandwiches, appetizers and desserts before Lion Dave Stenger began to call out the Drawdown numbers.

There were 13 $50 winners, two $100 winners, one $200 winner and one grand

prize winner of $1,000.

Thirty-three local businesses contributed a great variety of door prizes.

“Oregon Lions want to thank all the local businesses who donated those door prizes as well as anyone who purchased a ticket.”

Kundert should be a good fit for Oregon High School football

I

t didn’t take long for Oregon to find a replacement for departing football coach Nick Schneiderman. Freeport Aquin’s Broc Kundert enthusiastically threw his name in the hat and quickly got the call.

Ty Reynolds’ article in the Dixon Telegraph on what drew Kundert to Oregon should make us feel good about the Hawk football program and sports in general here.

He specifically touched upon the tradition, community support, resources and student interest. Even with several losing seasons in a row, Kundert views Oregon as one of the small-school grid coaching opportunities.

The fact that Oregon has strong track and field and wrestling programs was also mentioned. Kundert

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert felt those two sports help create good football players. I couldn’t agree more with that assessment and would love to see more players improve their skills and mental fortitude by doing track and wrestling.

Another observation expressed was how hard the team played. In reviewing BNC scores over last several years, there is data to bear that out.

Kundert should be a good fit for Oregon with his local roots and success attained at Aquin. The fact that he is willing to be a substitute teacher for the first year before a teaching position in his field opens up also indicates a desire to be here.

As we all know, being a sub is a tough chore and Kundert will doubly have his hands full with this teaching endeavor and instilling a winning spirit as football coach.

I like golf as much as the next person, but do not understand all the adulation heaped upon Tiger Woods at the Masters. Once Woods decided to enter the Masters, the media nearly fell over themselves singing the praises of Woods, using adjectives like phenomenal, unbelievable, stunning, magnificent, etc. in describing his return to golf.

All the hero-worshiping seems odd for such a flawed human being. Apparently, performance on the field takes precedence over character.

I agree that Woods is a tremendous competitor and maybe the best to ever play the game, but the teen idol crush shown by the media is a bit nauseating.

I have yet to see the Oregon softball team play, but came away impressed by a postgame performance last week.

While at John Cain’s visitation, I encountered coach Nate Rogers and

the team on their way back from a game at Byron.

In a show of respect to John, coach Rogers and the girls stopped at the funeral home and personally offered condolences to the family. Now that’s character.

As I write this, the team will have played four games before the newspaper comes out. That is why I am reluctant to give an update on its record, which sits at 7-3 as of April 10.

Two of those games will be against Stillman Valley and North Boone.

Those two, along with Dixon and Oregon, look to be the class of the Big Northern.

Two of the Hawks losses were in a doubleheader to Marengo, which has a couple of 3A state titles and another pair of runner-up finishes.

However, this year the Indians dropped down to 2A and are in the same sectional complex as Oregon.

Whoever gets out of that sectional likely would see Rockridge in the supersectional. Rockridge had two state titles and a third-place in the past three state tournaments.

It used to be that 1A softball in these parts was tougher than 2A. Maybe not anymore.

First things first. Oregon (24-8 in 2021) looks to repeat as BNC (tied with SV) and regional champs. After that, anything is a plus.

Wythe’s leadoff home run lifts SV over Oregon

dwussow@shawmedia.com Stillman Valley leadoff hitter Addison Wythe crushed a solo home run to center-left on an 0-2 count in the top of the first, then went 4 2/3 innings on the mound, combining with starting pitcher Kaelyn Williams to toss a shutout, as the Cardinals prevailed 1-0 over host Oregon on Monday in a Big Northern Conference contest.

Hawks starting pitcher Mia Trampel was in command of her pitches early, throwing back-to-back strikes against the Cardinals leadoff hitter, and putting her in a difficult position.

On the third pitch, however, Wythe found what she was looking for, launching the ball deep into the outfield and clearing the fence.

“I was just looking for something to drive hard, so I could get on base,” Wythe said.

Trampel quickly recovered from the early miscue, inducing two groundouts and throwing a strikeout to finish the top of the first, and not allowing another run the rest of the way.

But the Hawks were never able to string enough hits together to erase the early deficit.

In the bottom of the second, Oregon had perhaps its best chance to score, getting runners on first and second.

Liz Mois grounded a single to right field as the leadoff hitter and then Gracen Pitts skipped a single into right field as the third batter in the order, with two outs in the inning; one of them was a mistake in the batting order by the Hawks.

That proved costly, as the unforced out helped the Cardinals escape that jam.

“I think our team performed pretty well. I think we struggled at the plate a little bit, but she’s a good pitcher. Hats off to her, too, because she pitched a good game,” Stillman Valley coach Shawn Byers said. “We just need to be able to hit the ball better. Only had a couple hits. One home run, first inning, leadoff hit. That’s all we got.”

Stillman Valley made its pitching change in the top of the third as Wythe came on for Williams. With one out in the inning, Wythe conceded a bunt single to Bella Koertner, but the Cardinals’ defense got two quick flyouts, ending any hope of a Hawks’ rally.

In the top of the fourth, Stillman Valley looked poised to extend its lead when Ellie Bussan floated a single over shortstop and Josie Larson singled to right field in back-to-back at-bats.

Trampel had three strikeouts over the last three innings and allowed only one hit during that span, but Oregon’s offense just couldn’t get out of its funk.

Wythe earned five of her 10 strikeouts in the last two innings, including three in a row in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. The Hawks only had one base hit in the last three innings combined.

“It was very exciting. It was a little nerve-wracking, but I just had to go up there and do what I do,” Wythe said of pitching the last few innings in a tight game. “Had defense behind me to make plays.”

Koertner, Mois, Pitts, Reilee Suter and Lena Trampel tallied one hit each to lead Oregon at the plate.

Mia Trampel took the loss, pitching a complete game. Over seven innings, she conceded four hits, one run and zero walks, while striking out 10.

“She attacked it pretty well. Overall, I think she got into a good groove,” Oregon coach Nate Rogers said of Trampel. “I didn’t see the box score or the numbers or anything yet, but she was in their head a lot, it seemed like.

Both pitchers had great nights.

“It was a really good pitcher’s duel.

They got that one run in the first, and that was it. It was a fast game, really. A lot of good defense, a lot of strikeouts.

Other than Wythe’s homer, Grace Pfeiffer, Bussan and Larson each added a hit each for Stillman Valley.

Wythe was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and zero walks, while striking out 10 across 4 2/3 innings.

Graduated from Forreston High School Class of 1956. Married Audrey Bocker Messer on January 20, 1973. Ran the Mobil Station in Forreston for years and was an Illinois State Highway Maintenance worker. He retired from Rockford Blacktop in 1998 after 32 years of service. Member of the First United Methodist Church in Forreston and Labor Local Union #32. For many years he helped with the beautification and maintenance at the White Oak Cemetery.

Favorite memories include Christmas celebrations with his daughters when they were younger as well as camping at Timberlake.

David Forrest Stevens IV Born to Eleanor Eaton Stevens and Dr. David F. Stevens III, D.V.M. of Mt. Morris, Illinois, David is a Mayflower descendant of Francis Cooke, a Pilgrim and surveyor. David graduated from Southern Illinois University with a B.S. in Forestry. Illinois, not having a forest industry, he and his wife, Anne, traveled to where the trees are, East Texas.

At Stephen F. Austin State University, David received a Master of Science in Forestry.

David’s first jobs were with International Paper Company. He worked in Springhill, Louisiana where their two boys were born.

Then he was assigned to the International Paper Research Station in Natchez, Mississippi where he developed a system using helicopters to do control burns. The practical application of his research was then implemented out of the I.P. office in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

David left I.P. after 10 years for a job with E. I. Dupont as a chemical representative for the forest industry working out of his home

His favorite place was in Presque Isle, Maine with the potato farmers - Cajuns who spoke French, liked to eat, and have fun. He also spent a lot of time with the blueberry industry around Bar Harbor, Maine, and New York along the Hudson with the apple growers. David traveled over 40,000 miles a year. When an opportunity with Dupont came to return to Natchitoches, the family left the snow, blackflies, and mosquitoes, happy to return to their friends in Natchitoches, the lakes, and warm weather.

David retired from Dupont after 20 years.

David leaves behind his love and best friend through 50 years of marriage, Anne Lace Stevens, two sons, Ben and grandson, Andrew of Natchitoches, son, David and fiancé, Moraya, of Kamas, Utah, and sister, Sally Stevens, of Mt. Morris. The family of four traveled together to many places including Fiji, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. They visited family in Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man. A private celebration of David’s life will be at his family’s limestone schoolhouse.

Free oak tree saplings to be available April 22 and 29

The 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day, a day dedicated to preserving the environment, is April 22.

Arbor Day, a day designated in 1872 to promote the importance of planting trees, is recognized this year on April 29.

What better way to celebrate these days than to plant an oak tree for future generations to enjoy.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will have free oak tree saplings available for Ogle County residents on April 22 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 909 Pines Road, Oregon, while supplies last.

There will be a total of 900 bur oak, red oak and swamp white oak trees for distribution on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can take up to 10 (total)

saplings per household to plant on their property while supplies last.

Take only what you can plant and care for. This means caring for it after it is planted (watering, weeding, wrapping) and protecting it from animals and mowers.

The free saplings will be located in the garage on the south side of the parking lot at the OCSWMD. They will

be individually wrapped bare rooted saplings, should be kept cool and moist, and must be planted as soon as possible.

Information about each species, planting instructions, and tree posters will also be available. The site is under video surveillance. The limit per

Waddelow, Corps of Engineers in Germany during the age 93, passed away on March 29, 2022 at Korean War. After returning home from the Pinecrest Terrace, Mt. Army, Darrel became a Pressman for Kable Printing for 43 years, retiring on February 1, Morris, IL. 1991.

Darrel was born on January 12, 1929 in Mt. He was a member of Disciples United Methodist Church, American Legion of Mt. Morris, Morris, IL, the son of Oregon VFW Post #8739 and the Mt. Morris Walter and Dorothy (Marston) Waddelow. Senior Center. He served as a board member of the Rockford Bell Credit Union for 15 years.

He married Donna When Darrel’s five children were growing L. Fleer on June 23, up, he enjoyed attending all their school 1951 in the United Methodist Church, Mt. sporting events and later spending time with his grandchildren. Darrel and Donna loved

to travel and looked forward to their annual trips to Florida. Darrel was a handyman. The Methodist Church was Darrel’s second home, as he provided maintenance for the church.

He had a great sense of humor and was known for his “typical dad jokes.” Darrel enjoyed researching family genealogy and was knowledgeable of Mt. Morris history. He was patriotic and proudly displayed the American flag. In 2015, he went on an Honor Flight with his son Douglas to the nation’s capital.

Darrel is survived by his wife: Donna, Mt. Morris, IL; Sons: Douglas (Annette) Waddelow, Grayslake, IL; David (Marsha) Waddelow, Santa Ana, Costa Rica; Daniel (Crystal) Waddelow, Greencastle, PA. Daughters: Darla (Rex) Hamel, San Carlos, Panama; DeAnne (Adam) Auld, Browns Summit, NC. 12 Grandchildren; 7 Great-Grandchildren; Several nephews andnieces; and special sister-in-law

Janet McNiven. Darrel is predeceased by his parents; Brother: Donald; Sisters: Fern Smith and JoAnne Cook.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the Disciples UnitedMethodist Church with Pastor Julie Bunt and Pastor Rodney Caldwell officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 A.M. with the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. A luncheon at the church will follow the service. Private family burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. He is survived by his wife Sally Toms of Oregon, many cousins and nieces: Dawn (David) DeGarmo, Shelly Gertmann, Amy Smith and nephew Adam (Carrie) Smith. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm, Monday, April 11, 2022 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon, IL with Pastor Matthew Smith and Pastor Dana Cox co-officiating.

Visitation will be held prior to the services on Monday at the funeral home from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Burial will be at the Lighthouse Cemetery near Oregon. A memorial fund is established in Larry’s name for the University of Wisconsin Regional Cancer Center in Rockford and the Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, IL. Born: September 14, 1948 in Oregon, Illinois Died: April 5, 2022 in Rockford, IL Oregon, IL – Lawrence L. “Larry” Toms, age 73, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford. He was born on September 14, 1948 in Oregon, IL, the son of Leon C. and Louise Pauline “Polly” (Black) Toms. Larry graduated from Oregon High School in 1968. He married Sarah “Sally” Corron on June 14, 1991 in Wasco, Illinois.

Larry worked as a welder from 1971 – 2010 at E. D. Etnyre Co. in Oregon. He was a member of the Lighthouse United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Illinois State Pistol Association where he formerly served on its Board of Directors. In 1980, Larry was the alternate for the U.S. Olympic Pistol Team. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA. Larry loved going fishing, bowling, and golfing. He spent many hours on woodworking in his shop making beautiful bowls and cutting boards along with many other wood-

The League is the only 100% school-approved clay target shooting sport program in America and the League’s co-ed and adaptive nature are key attractions to schools nationwide. The League is fully Title IX compliant with both male and female athletes competing on the same team.

Additionally, it’s an “adaptive” sport, which allows students with physical disabilities to take part.

The League’s priorities are safety, fun, and marksmanship – in that order.

The League is the safest sport in school, with not one reported injury since the inception of the League in 2001. Each athlete must complete firearm safety certification before participation.

The new season is underway for the seven area high school teams that are participating in the Illinois State High School Clay Target League (ILSHSCTL) this spring.

1,311 athletes compete on the 65 high school teams from across the state that participate in the program, which is part of the USA Clay Target League.

The seven area schools with teams are Eastland High School, Faith Christian School, Foreston Jr./Sr. High School, Milledgeville High School, Morrison Community High School, Polo Community High School and Prophetstown High School.

“We are excited to see a record number of high school teams participating this season.” said John Nelson, president of the USACTL, “There is such a high demand for outdoor activities that are an alternative to tradi-

tional sports. Kudos to the coaches and parents that make these teams possible.”

The students’ 9-week season began in late March with the first of two practice weeks to get them warmed up.

Weekly competition begins April 17, with a final “fun week” in mid-May. The season culminates with tournaments held in June, and athletes with top season averages will be invited to register for the League’s National Championship held in Michigan every July.

This spring, more than 31,500 student athletes are participating in League programs across the country.

“Athletes of all types are able to participate in clay target shooting,” Nelson said. “The League has a ‘no benchwarmers’ philosophy, and the League’s True Team scoring system is designed so that everyone’s score mat-

Trees Project was initiated in 2007 to help further the Living Lands and Waters mission to protect, preserve and restore the natural environment of our nation’s major rivers and their watersheds.

Their mission is to not only clean up the riverways but to also enhance the watersheds by planting native trees and removing invasive plants.

Initiative have supported this mission for several years by facilitating and distributing more than 10,000 trees per year to units of government, forest preserves, and conservation groups in all of the 11 counties that border the Rock River in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Planting the trees along rivers, streams and waterways is strongly encouraged by these groups. This should have a long lasting positive

impact on the Rock River watershed.

Junior High Bowling IESA State Bowling Finals: Teams from the David L. Rahn Junior High competed in the IESA State Bowling Finals last weekend at Joliet Town & Country Lanes with the boys team finishing in ninth place in the state with a 5,984 10-game total. The boys were led by Aiden Currier with a 10-game total of 1,557 and a high game of 202 for a 43rd place finish. OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: April 5 Carrie O’Neil, 36, of Dixon, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop in the 4000 block of South Lowden Road at 9:16 p.m. O’Neil also given a warning for inoperable taillights.

O’Neil was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 6 Fernando Carreno, 43, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for domestic battery and aggravated battery to a peace officer (Class 2 felony) after deputies responded to the Mt. Morris Estates Trailer Park at 3747 Illinois Route 64 at approximately 3:07 p.m. in reference to a domestic dispute. Carreno was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

April 7 Stephen J. Lohse, 47, of Dixon, was arrested for driving while license suspended after traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois Route 2 and Creekside Drive in Byron at 2:48 a.m. Lohse also was cited for a lighting violation. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 8 Shawn Mortenson, 43, of Ashton, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while license

suspended after a traffic stop near the intersection of East Flagg and South Skare roads at approximately 12:23 a.m. Mortenson also was cited for expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and transporting an open alcoholic container. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., the Ogle County Narcotics Task Force, which is comprised of deputies and Rochelle police officers, executed a search warrant in the 11000 block of Lincoln Lane in Rochelle.

Pursuant to the search warrant, Michael Holland, 53, of Rochelle, was arrested for unlawful possession with intent to deliver (Class X felony), unlawful possession of a controlled substance of crack cocaine between 15-100 grams (Class 1 felony), unlawful possession of a controlled substance of hydrocodone pills (Class 4 felony) and endangering the life and health of a child (Class A misdemeanor). Holland was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

The investigation still is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

Grant A. Johnson Jr., 29, of Rockford, was arrested for no driver’s license (expired more than one year) and unlawful possession of cannabis (improper container/driver) after a traffic stop in the 13000 block of Illinois Route 72 at approximately 7:37 p.m. Johnson also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and suspended registration.

Johnson was taken into custody without

incident and released on a $3,000 I-Bond with a return court date.

April 9 Marvin Bush, 30, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64. Bush was released on an I-Bond and given a return court date.

Jaminique Danielowski, 28, of Rockford, was arrested and cited for driving while license revoked and obstructing identification after a traffic stop in the 7000 block of Illinois Route 2 at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Danielowski also was cited for speeding. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

A 16-year-old Sterling female was arrested for battery after deputies responded to White Pines Roller Rink at 6929 West Pines Road, at 10:54 p.m. for a disturbance. The juvenile was released to her grandmother.

She will appear in court at a later date.

April 10 Curtis Hillard, 26, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license and charged with felony obstructing for originally providing a false name. Deputies stopped Hillard in the 4000 block of North River Road at approximately 2:34 a.m. for a lane usage and speeding violation. Hillard was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held on an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant.

At approximately 1:58 p.m., deputies responded to a hit-and-run in the 1000 block

of West Pines Road. Deputies and Oregon police were able to locate the offending vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of 5th and Washington streets in Oregon. Following an investigation, Chad Sparby, 29, of Dixon, was arrested for resisting a peace officer. Sparby also was cited for possession of cannabis, reckless driving, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage. Sparby was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 11 Kevin Jones, 42, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop at the intersection of Pine and Grant streets in Stillman Valley at approximately 2:46 p.m. Jones also was cited for use of an electronic communication device. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

James P. Wessels, 60, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 5000 block of Illinois Route 2 at approximately 10:41 p.m.

Wessels also was cited for speeding and operating an unregistered vehicle. Wessels was released from the scene on an I-Bond. A passenger in the vehicle, Mitchell A. Wessels, 36, of Rockford, was arrested for outstanding Ogle County and Stephenson County warrants. Mitchell Wessels was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
