The Hazelhurst sale was held on Saturday, April 2, and it was a cold and snowy day. The Polo Lions Club sold biscuits and gravy for breakfast, and sold hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pork chop sandwiches, chips, candy, coffee, hot cocoa and sodas. It was a good day despite the weather and the Lions Club sold out of the pork chop sandwiches early in the afternoon.

POLO SENIOR CENTER Polo Senior Center offers day trip to see dancing horses show

The Polo Senior Center is offering a day trip to Delevan, WIsconsin, to the Dancing Horses Theatre.

The show features an array of horse breeds who perform alongside their trainers in a fantastic showing of equestrian artistry. The show is

performed in a state-of-the-art 300-seat theatre and is wheelchair-accessible, and fully climate-controlled for all seasons.

The bus will leave from First United Methodist parking lot at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7.

The trip includes round trip transportation, a lunch at the show which includes dessert, a tour of the dancing horse farm and a back stage pass that includes a training demonstration.

The bus will return to Polo around 5 p.m.

The cost of the trip is $90 for members and $100 for non-members.

Hopkins and their family at the Hazelhurst sale. Despite the snow and cold, it was a busy day for everyone. Even though the day can be rather long, it is nice to visit with everyone.

This evening I went to Dixon to have dinner with my friend, Teresa. She celebrated her birthday at the end of March.

She and I have been friends for over 10 years since we worked together at one of my previous jobs.

On Friday evening, Matt called home for a nice long phone conversation. He is getting himself ready for his move from Hawaii. He was planning to come home before his move, but once again, his plans have changed. We are all glad to know he will be much closer to home.

A week ago, I was excited to start my spring break with my long to-do list. I started out working on a few items. By the middle of the week, I had decided to make more time for rest and relaxation rather than continuing to work.

This week, we return to school and I am feeling a bit guilty for all the things I didn’t get done. Even though I feel tired, I have a hard time actually resting. I can be overwhelmed with the work left to do. Then, I’m overwhelmed with guilt for not doing

the work.

The one thing I have a hard time with is giving myself some grace. God’s grace covers us all, each and every day. I will gladly extend grace to those around me. The love that God has shown to us is easy to share.

I need to remember that God’s love and grace is for ourselves, too. God loves us and wants us to take care of ourselves. Not only is there time for work, but we should make time to rest. Our bodies and minds need it.

In order to do the things God has asked of us, we need to be well-rested. Our batteries need to be recharged. When we rest in God’s comfort and grace, we are filled and ready to accomplish the next task. His love, His grace, and His forgiveness are for each of us.

I hope to see you next week at our little church in the country. Join us for our special services during Holy Week. Our church family gladly welcomes you to share in a time of worship and praise.

BY KAREN MERLAK Even though the snow is not what we are hoping for, it was beautiful to watch from inside a warm building. God’s creation is beautiful to watch in every season.

Even when it is unexpected, we are thankful for all that He has provided. This is His day and we are joyful for it.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Rose Avey. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout brought her message for the fifth Sunday in Lent. Suzanne had a special message for our youngest friends, Amelia, Fiona, and Harper.

Next Sunday will start Holy Week with a Palm Sunday worship service. Our church will host a Maundy Thursday service on April 14 at 7 p.m. On Sunday April 17, we will have a special Easter Resurrection service at 10 a.m. We hope you can join us.

This week, James and Nancy Hopkins returned from a trip to Arizona to visit their daughter, Edie Klein, her husband, Dave, and their daughter, Hanna. The family enjoyed lots of family time, along with shopping, visiting the children’s museum, and dining out.

Snow, mud, bids all part of Hazelhurst Spring Consignment Sale A day earlier or a day later would have made the annual Hazelhurst Spring Consignment Sale a lot more pleasant, but Mother Nature accommodates no one – including area farmers looking to sell or buy equipment.

A heavy wet snow fell across the 30-acre sale site between Polo and Milledgeville all-day Saturday making the venue very, very muddy and chilly.

“We’ve had snow before the sale, but not actually on the day of the sale. And this is a wet, heavy snow,” said Sheryl Hopkins, of Public Auction Service, on sale day.

The annual event is held every spring and includes farm machinery, automobiles, lawn tractors and just about whatever else someone brings in before sale day.

The event has become a generational “must do” for some area

farmers.

“I’ve been coming here for 40 years,” said Dan Langy of Lena who was busy chatting with two buddies from Lena and Stockton.

“It could be worse weather.”

Mark Engelkens of Freeport adapted his ATV with an umbrella to protect him and his passenger from the elements.

“I’ve been going to get an actual roof for it, but for now this works,” he said smiling as the machine slithered across a muddy pathway.

Sara Coleman and her toddlers, Lucy and Cole, trekked their way through the mud en route to finding her husband across the field at a sale ring.

“We were trying to buy a well pump, but it went too high for us,” she said while extricating Lucy from a mud rut.

“We just got here a few minutes ago,” said Randy, Kasen’s dad. “We usually come over every year.”

The Polo Lions Club operates the main food booth in the center of the sale site. The covered building was a popular place for visitors to get out of the snow and grab a hot dog, cheeseburger or pork chop sandwich and chat with friends and neighbors.

“We had a steady crowd,” Lion Mike Faivre said.

Hopkins, whose family started the event years ago, said overall the day was a success.

“We had a decent crowd,” Hopkins said on Sunday.

“Items sold well and we had 450 online bidders so overall it was a good crowd.”

Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed each April since its first presidential proclamation in 1983, and millions of Americans have participated in this public awareness that all children deserve to grow up in happy and healthy environments.

GFWC Illinois Polo Women’s Club partners with Prevent Child Abuse Illinois to spread the message that everyone can help promote great childhoods in their community. Pinwheels (blue and silver) are nationally recognized symbols of child abuse prevention and symbolize hope.

The Polo Women’s Club brings public awareness by annually planting pinwheel gardens at the Paul Grahling Park, Centennial Grade School, Applington Middle School and the Polo Community High School each April.

This year, pinwheels were planted on Friday, April 1, with Mayor Doug Knapp reading a proclamation from the city of Polo recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

“With awareness, education and support, the community working together can have an incredible impact on preventing child abuse,” said Beth Green, club member. “As a reminder, the simple pinwheel should compel us to report suspected abuse (1-800-2522873) and protect all children.”

Natalie Faivre to wed Travis Thompson in September Michael and Paula Faivre of Polo are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Natalie, to Travis Thompson, son of Jeff and Julie Thompson of Mt. Carmel.

Natalie is a 2012 graduate of Polo Community High School and a 2016 graduate of St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa.

Natalie is a registered nurse at Deaconess Hospital, Evansville, Indiana. She will graduate from the University of Missouri in August with her master’s degree in Family Nurse Practice. She will continue her education to obtain her Doctor of Nurse Practice and a second degree in Nursing Education.

Travis is a 2012 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and a 2016 graduate of Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana. Travis is the president and operator of Travis Thompson Oil Corp., a crude oil production company in the Illinois and Indiana area.

Sharing info, talents with Ogle County Historical Society

W

ithin the last year or so, we have been sharing information with Ogle County Historical Society and it is nice to be able to do that.

Just yesterday I received an email from Michal Burnett with a wonderful picture of Frank Osborne and his obituary. When Michal shared the map we had given them with her historical society, Roger Cramer dug deeper and found Frank’s obit, a great article and a wonderful picture of Frank.

We had been unable to find all of that. If you remember, Frank Osborne had labeled on a rare plat map all the Native American villages of many years ago.

Now this new information can be added to our Native American display.

Frank Osborne was an authority on Native American villages in this area.

He died on June 30, 1966, at the age of 99. Dale Blough was just getting started farming and finding artifacts on Dale’s property when Frank died.

Frank was wandering around on his family farm at the age of 8 in 1874,

His searches did not just continue on his land but other areas as well. So he was always looking for Native American artifacts.

One of his prized possessions was a jar of stone “marbles” left behind on his property by Winnebago Indian boys. Also when the state was bulldozing eight Native American mounds along Kishwaukee River, Frank went with his shovel and saved many artifacts including a skull of a Native American mother. Now you cannot have any Native American bones out on display.

Eventually he sold some of his artifacts and placed others in Winnebago and Oregon museums according to an article from the Rockford Star on

Jan.10, 1965.

Frank was also into cars and bought his first car in 1909.

Another part of his collection were many antique clocks.

I remember traveling many years ago with my sister. We stopped at a place way back in the woods to see a man’s collection of clocks. His house was filled with clocks of all kinds and he had it open to the public. It was an interesting day as we visited with this unique individual and his clocks.

We at the museum also are looking for information about some of the children who lived at the Peek Home.

Linda has been putting all the information about workers and children on a spreadsheet.

Donna Baughman, who offers genealogy help at the library, has been helping Linda with this documenting of information rather than going to the book each time an inquiry is made.

The book is old and very fragile. We thank Donna for her help.

We are now looking for information on Peggy Morrison who was at the

Peek Home from 1946 to 1955.

We also have Morrison boys listed and we wonder if they were her brothers? Does anyone have any information?

Linda recently found the obituary of Dixie Wheeler Smith, who died in Winfield, Kansas, at the age of 97. I corresponded with her for a while until I lost track of her. Dixie married James Smith and they moved to California.

Following his death, Dixie moved back to Dixon and then Polo until she relocated to Kansas near her sons’ family.

Dixie had lived at the Peek Home for a period of time.

I am now starting to put together the history of the Peek Home in preparation of the program in May on the Peek Home by Polo Historical Society.

The history is very unique and even takes us to the John Deere family. So save the date, May 4, for a most interesting program.

Lowden Miller State Forest steeped in history, nature

owden Miller State Forest is located four miles south of Oregon. It was originally a wooded area located along 3.5 miles of riverfront with hardwood and pine trees.

In the late 1860s a small boy, Frank Lowden, walked behind a covered wagon as his family moved from Minnesota to Iowa. This frontier boy was one day to be governor of Illinois. He helped his father to farmland and at the same time went to school. When he was 15, he got a job teaching school.

At the end of five years he had saved enough money to go to college and entered the University of Iowa.

Governor Lowden was much interested in farming. In 1900 he purchased a large tract of land in Ogle County. He named it “Sinnissippi Farm,” the Indian word for “Rocky Waters.”

Over several decades he had 50,000 trees planted and established the Sinnissippi Forest, which was designated as the first Illinois Tree Farm. Frank O. Lowden (1861-1943) was Illinois governor from 1917 to 1921.

Because the soil was of limited use for crops. Lowden experimentally planted white pines and other tree species to see what would grow productively. The earliest plantings of white

pines occurred before 1910 and are believed to be the oldest in the state.

The governor remained an avid student of forestry throughout his life. In 1938, he invited the new forestry department at the University of Illinois to conduct research on the developing forest.

Today, with nearly 80% of all data on Illinois hardwood forest growth having been developed at Sinnissippi, the forest still serves as a field laboratory for the university.

The family’s Sinnissippi Forest Christmas Tree wholesale and retail business began providing high-quality firs and pines for the holiday in 1948, but the family closed their Christmas tree sales operation in 2010. In 1955, Sinnissippi Forest was designated the first Illinois Tree Farm.

In June 1992, the state of Illinois purchased a 1,186 acre parcel of the forest from a grandson of Gov. and Mrs. Lowden, Warren P. Miller and his wife, Nancy. Warren’s brother, Phillip Lowden Miller and his wife, Bonnie, sold an additional 1,039 acres to the state in 1993. In offering their land for sale to the state rather than seeing it subdivided or rezoned for development, the family said they were achieving their goal of keeping the area an actively managed forest and preserving its beauty for future

Named for the family, Lowden Miller State Forest now totals 2,291 acres. It is located across the Rock River from another DNR property, Castle Rock Sate Park, which oversees its daily operations.

There are six parking areas available to the public. There are about 22 miles of maintained trails available for hiking and cross-country skiing.

These trails are open for use year-

round except for a few days during the firearm hunting seasons. Several horse trails are also available. Information and trail maps are available at the Castle Rock Park Office. This is a wonderful place for hiking.

This is not a park. (No camping).

It’s a wonderful native area.

Prices last raised in 2016, while maintenance, personnel costs up

“Looking back, we have not gone up on our prices since 2016,” said Alderperson Tommy Bardell, who heads the Parks and Recreation Department.

“Our chemical costs since then have

shot through the roof. Our minimum wage has gone – for anybody 18 years old or older – from $8.25 to $12 an hour.”

Polo City Council members agreed on consensus with Bardell’s proposed rate structure. It likely will be adopted in May as part of the city’s service rates listing, City Attorney M. Thomas Suits said.

In-town general admission is proposed to rise to $3 and out-of-town to $5. Both are a $1 increase.

Passes will cost: Single: $50 for in-town and $70 for out-of-town; Senior: $40 for in-town and $50 for

out-of-town; Family: $75 for in-town and $125 for out-of-town; Babysitter: add $15 for in-town and add $5 for out-of-town.

Two-hour time slots for parties under 30 people will cost $100. For parties 30 to 59 people, it will cost $125, and for 60-plus people, the cost will be $150.

Swim lessons will be $45, which is a $10 increase.

“They’re very minimal increases that still leave us way below Nash, YMCA and some of the other pools that you can get into around here,” Bardell said. “It’s something that we absolutely need to do to continue, to

not totally hemorrhage out at the pool.

It’s long overdue and just something that needs to be done.”

In other business, the council: Unanimously approved hiring Elizabeth Stamm and Rilley Peterson as assistant managers for the Polo Pool at a rate of $13 per hour each. Both have experience as lifeguards and in retail and food service, Bardell said.

Unanimously decided to not raise the city’s video gaming terminal fee. It will remain at $25 per machine per year. A recent state law allows the council to raise the fee to $250 per machine per year. Because there was no change, no vote was required.

BRIEF Nash swimming pool to close for repairs

The swimming pool at the Nash Recreation Center in Oregon will be closed for repairs beginning April 15.

Following the pool closure in August 2021 to repaint the pool surface, staff identified the paint was not adhering to the pool’s surface, the Oregon Park District said in a news release.

This was communicated with the contractor and the

contractor will be returning to complete the corrective work.

The work will not result in any additional fees outside the originally contracted amount, the release said.

“The district is fortunate to have discovered the issue early on and has worked alongside the contractor to identify a solution,” said Erin Folk, park district executive director.

The pool closure is expected to last four weeks to allow for proper cure time of the primer and paint prior to refilling the

STERLING – More good news for the East Lincolnway business corridor: Harbor Freight Tools soon will be opening in the vacant Staples spot in Pine Tree Plaza at 4311 E. Lincolnway, said Kit Kyarsgaard, owner of the shopping center.

Harbor Freight will take up only about 16,000 square feet, leaving 7,000 square feet available, along with a 16,000-square-foot open spot next to Game Stop, Kyarsgaard said.

Renovation will start soon, and plans call for the discount tool retailer to move in mid-summer, Kyarsgaard said.

In May, the Sterling native, owner of SKR Rentals just east of the plaza, and SKR Acquisitions, also bought Lee Wayne Plaza.

He hired Sterling Commercial Roofing to reroof the building at 2317 E. Lincolnway, which be bought for $235,000, and he will hire other local contractors to work on the facade and do other remodeling, in the hopes of also attracting new businesses to several open sites there, he said.

Kyarsgaard, who works for Caterpillar and now is living in the Peoria area, is offering the same deal as the new owners of Northland Mall: free rent for six months at either location, while the businesses establish themselves and build a customer base.

“I’m just a local guy trying to keep things local,” he said.

Harbor Freight has been in Kyarsgaard’s sights since he bought the plaza in 2017, but at the time, Harbor Freight already had plans to open stores in Freeport and in Clinton, Iowa, and wanted to see how they did

before committing to a Sterling location, he said. Five years later, the company is pleased with its success regionally and is ready to pull the trigger in Sterling.

Dollar Tree now anchors the 58,209-square-foot plaza, which was built in 1998, and its newest tenant, Sophie’s Cafe just celebrated its oneyear anniversary there on March 1.

Game Stop, Sally’s Beauty, Aaron’s, Shoe Sensation, One Main Financial and Nails Spa also are located in Pine Tree.

Tennessee-based Brookwood Capital Advisors bought Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway, in January for $1.7 million, and immediately announced its offer of six months free rent. All plants are dug from local gardens, so they are “proven winners.”

azoellner@shawmedia.com The transition from watching 16 children in the comfort of her own home to overseeing 15 employees and 102 kids in a day care facility was daunting, but Jodi Heuerman met the challenge head-on.

“I’ve always wanted to open a center, something bigger, and as the need started to grow, I kind of ventured out and looked,” said Heuerman, owner and director of Little Explorers Learning Adventures.

Heuerman opened Little Explorers, a licensed child care center in Oregon, on March 7 after running a home day care for a decade. They accept children between 6 weeks and 12 years of age and, currently, 60 to 70 children are enrolled, she said.

“We just want someplace parents trust that’s safe, that’s secure, that they do learning,” she said. “We don’t want to be known as just a babysitting service. You’re going to drop your kid off and they’re going to learn something. They’ll be fed well. We have a cook on hand. We cook our meals here.”

Working with children is something she loves, and always has, said

Heuerman, who has an associate’s degree in early childhood and a total of 20 years of experience in child care.

While she gets less one-on-one time playing with the children in her care than she did while in her home, Heuerman said that she still makes a point to go to the classrooms on a daily basis to check on students and teachers.

Little Explorers has six classrooms outfitted for different age groups, and a large motor room they’ve nicknamed the “Northern Illinois Weather Gym,” Heuerman said.

Each classroom has at least one “teacher-qualified” adult, per the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services requirements, she said.

“Then assistants basically just have to have a high school diploma, but we try to look for as much experience as possible,” Heuerman said. “At least some babysitting or youth group or worked in summer programs or worked in day care before.”

Located in the former First Presbyterian Church of Oregon, the building underwent a year of renovations. The process was lengthy in part because of the supply chain shortages resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Heuerman said.

“We’re in a good spot,” she said.

Born: August 24, 1937 in Milledgeville, IL Died: March 23, 2022 in North Manchester, IN Barbara Lorraine Slifer died at her home in North Manchester, Indiana on March 23, 2022 at age 84.

She was born August 24, 1937 in Milledgeville, Carroll County, Illinois, to Howard and Beulah (Shilling) Slifer.

She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law Lawrence H. Slifer, Sr., and Marilyn (Kitzmiller) Slifer; her parents; nephew Larry Slifer; and great-nephew Robert A. Linton, Jr. Lorraine’s early childhood years were spent with her parents and brother on a farm near Lanark Illinois. When she was in fourth grade

Born: January 22, 1920 in Dekalb, IL Died: March 29, 2022 in Oregon Heaven gained a beautiful angel as Adaline M. Beck, 102, of Polo, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at Serenity Hospice and Home.

She lived a long and wonderful life but it was her time to be reunited with the love of her life Dale and infant son Rodger. She will be sadly missed by her three daughters.

Adaline was born January 22, 1920, in Dekalb, the daughter of Walter and Mary (Miller) McAdams. On May 17, 1941 in Maple Park, IL, she married her soul mate Dale Beck and together they had four children Bev Merdian, Rodger (deceased), Linda (Steve)

her family moved to nearby Polo and she graduated from Polo Community High School in 1955 with 54 other classmates.

Lorraine moved to North Manchester in 1957 to attend Manchester College and remained in the community she loved the rest of her life. After obtaining a two-year degree in Secretarial Studies from Manchester, she started working at the college as secretary to the Dean of Students. Lorraine remained at the college her entire working career, retiring after 47 years, where her final position was Administrative Assistant to the Office of Student Development. She collected a lifetime of student practical jokes and, at her surprise retirement party in 2002 was awarded, among other gifts, the desk she had used for 47 years.

Lorraine kept in touch with many of the students whom she came to know while working at Manchester and was always thrilled to learn of their successes. She could recount their names, the year they graduated Grossnickle, Donna (Kenny) Soltow all of Polo.

She was able to live in her own home for 78 years and so many wonderful family memories will be cherished.

Survivors include her daughters; 6 Grandchildren Bob (Julie) Merdian, Denny (Karla) Merdian, Michael (Heather) Merdian, Andria (Dave) Young, Julie Albrecht, Jeff (Brenda) Soltow; 17 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great-Great Granddaughter She was preceded in death by husband Dale, son Rodger, 2 brothers Walter and William McAdams, sister Alvina Stickles and a son-inlaw Robert Merdian.

A private family service will be held where she will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon.

Lorraine had many humorous stories to share about her time at Manchester College as well as more serious stories from living through the on-campus and societal changes of the latter half of the 20th century.

Lorraine was an active member of Zion Lutheran in North Manchester, editing the church newsletter, keeping some of the church records, leading a women’s bible study group, and helping with the church library. She was an avid reader, sharing books with friends and donating many to the public library’s book sale. Lunches with friends were regular entries on Lorraine’s calendar. She was a cat lover, taking in a stray cat who sought her out, and naming her Kitty - a great companion during the last years of her life.

Family was important to Lorraine. She often drove to Illinois to spend time with her brother and his wife and with her nieces and their families, and was looking forward to

moving to Sterling Illinois to live with niece Laurie (Slifer) Free and husband Bill. Lorraine had many friends in the North Manchester community and maintained ties with several high school and college classmates.

Lorraine is survived by niece Sandra Slifer, Rockford IL.; three nieces and their husbands, Laurie and William Free, Sterling IL.; Barbara and Robert Linton, Sterling IL.; Valarie and Daniel Stallings, Rockford,IL.; 12 great-nieces and nephews; 20 great-great nieces and nephews; and 6 great-great-great nieces and nephews.

A service was Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at at Zion Lutheran Church, 113 W. Main St., North Manchester, IN. Graveside services will be held in Sterling, Illinois at a later date.

Lena Trampel had three hits and Ava Hackman had two hits for Oregon.

Dixon 5, Oregon 3: A three-run fourth inning helped propel the Dixon softball team to a 5-3 victory over Oregon in a Big Northern Conference game Tuesday evening at Oregon Park West.

The Duchesses got a solo home run from Sam Tourtillott in the first inning, but the Hawks answered with a solo homer by Bella Koertner in the bottom of the inning.

Dixon scored three times in the fourth and tacked on an insurance run in the fifth after

Oregon had gotten back to within 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Tourtillott also singled and scored twice, and Elle Jarrett had two doubles and three RBIs for the Duchesses. Anna Kate Phillips was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Holli Miller singled and doubled, and Izzi McCommons also drove in a run for Dixon.

Jarrett struck out eight and walked one in a three-hit complete game, allowing two earned runs.

Koertner added a double and scored twice, and Reilee Suter scored the other run for the Hawks. Jesse Suter had an RBI. Mia Trampel took the loss, allowing five earned runs and 11 hits in seven innings. She struck out nine and walked one.

Longtime sports trainer John Cain was a fixture at OHS

ne of the best. Such a great man. Wonderful person.

Sad day for his family, friends and school.

Those are just a few of the glowing tributes expressed on Facebook about the passing of sports trainer John Cain. The 58-year-old Cain plied his trade in the Oregon School District for 30 years, humbly serving thousands of athletes.

That is about as long as I’ve known John, as he was a constant fixture at every sporting event held at Oregon.

Talk about dedication to his craft. That was John, who went above and beyond what was expected from him.

With a cheerful attitude, he was always willing to help out anyone. I marveled at his work ethic and constantly thought how lucky we were to have him at Oregon.

What made this even more impressive was doing this while battling decades-long health issues. The man put in the long hours with nary a complaint.

As the old saying goes, “so-and-so will be missed.” How much we miss the deceased varies in degree. In John’s case, he will be missed to the nth degree by all lives he touched as a trainer.

On to basketball, which was one of John’s favorite sports.

The first-ever matchup between Duke and North Carolina in the men’s NCAA semifinal created angst in all parts of this country.

A big story nationally was sing-

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert er-songwriter Eric Church canceling a concert last Saturday night so he could attend the game. Church is a huge North Carolina fan and though he inconvenienced his fans, he gained a measure of respect by being truthful with them about his absence.

There were reports of regrets over scheduled weddings. In one case, the bride was a hardcore Duke fan and groom the same for NC, leading to creative ideas for incorporating watching the two teams play during the reception.

Examples like this go to show the influence big-time sporting events have on us. There was even the plight of former Oregon basketball coach Quinn Virgil.

A devotee of Duke basketball, he came to the realization that his flight back from a Florida vacation would be during the game. He wanted to book an earlier flight home, but I believe his wife Kelli highly discouraged that plan.

Another dilemma faced by Quinn on the trip was kidney stones, but he shared the pain of missing the game was worse than passing stones. Now that’s a real Duke basketball fan.

In a good news, bad news scenario, he did get his wish.

He received the gift of life through a kidney and pancreas transplant at UW-Madison on June 14, 2005 and continued to work until his death last week. problems. Yes, he was able to see the game, but the next available flight wasn’t for three days, not ideal for a couple of educators trying to get back to work.

I think they may have had to rent a car and drive back to Illinois. At least they were able to escape this unseasonably cold spring weather for a few days.

As I was patting myself on the back for going out on a long run Saturday morning in the snow, I felt humbled a bit when I noticed a bunch of kids

playing a soccer game at Park West in the same conditions.

Kudos to decision-makers at the park district for allowing soccer to be played in inclement weather. Rather than pampering our children, these are the types of challenges they need to gain mental toughness, something sorely lacking nowadays in our youth.

Keene was followed closely by Xander Garcia in 13th place with a 494 series, Aiden Currier with a 439 series and Caleb Ehrler with a 412 series. Dixon’s Jakob Nicklaus placed 10th individually with a 506 series and will advance to the state finals as well.

The girls team finished in 10th place and advanced two individuals to the state finals, Ahren Howey and Katlyn Miller.

Howey rolled a 306 series (91-90-125) to finish in 28th place overall and Miller had a 295 series for 33rd place.

Dixon Reagan’s Allison Coss placed 10th individually with a 425 series and will advance to next weekend’s event as well.

The girls will bowl Friday, April 8, at 8:45 a.m. and the boys will bowl Friday at 12:45 p.m.

“They will bowl four games to determine the teams and individuals who will advance to day-two of the event,” Nordman said.

“This is the first time the IESA State bowling series has been held since 2019, when the Mt Morris Rahn girls team finished in seventh place overall.”

Drop It and Drive: April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with agencies throughout the state to remind motorists to “Drop It and Drive” as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

“Texting while driving puts everyone on the road at risk by distracting a driver visually, manually and cognitively,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

“During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we’re working to increase awareness of these dan-

gers and encourage all motorists to give driving their full attention.”

Partners include the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

At a time when traffic fatalities are on the rise in Illinois and across the country, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is committed to reducing the number

of traffic crashes caused by distractions such as texting or talking on a cellphone, VanVickle said.

Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones the entire month of April. Deputies will ticket drivers who text or use their cellphones while driving.

The distracted driving campaign is administered

by IDOT with federal traffic safety funds.

March 25 Austin R. Norman, 19, Amboy, was cited for speeding 45 MPH in a 30 MPH speed zone at 11:45 a.m.

Norman was released on an I-Bond.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be hosting a residential electronics recycling event on April 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

This event is for Ogle County residents only and a free permit is required in advance of the event. To obtain a free permit call 815-732-4020 or email solidwaste@ oglecounty.org by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.

16 STATE POLICE Illinois State Police announce activity for March

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 324 citations, 442 written warnings, and made 16 criminal arrests during the month of March.

Speeding accounted for 170 citations. There were 26 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.

Troopers investigated

OREGON POLICE 14 traffic crashes, assisted 102 motorists, and conducted 86 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 14 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

There was six arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties, investigated one fatal traffic crash in March.

Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

Clinee A. Streeter, 24, of Virginia, Minnesota, was arrested at 6:48 p.m. for driving while license revoked. Streeter was also charged with possession of a controlled substance. Streeter was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

March 30 Angela D. Noirfalise, 57, of Dixon, was arrested at 7:50 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear.

Noirfalise was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

March 31 Jayden R. Banta, 17, of Rochelle, was issued a citation at 9:40 p.m. for speeding, 71 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1100 block of W. Washington Street.

SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

March 29 Deputies investigated a one-vehicle crash in the 10000 block of Illinois Route 72. Taylor Michalak, 24, was driving a 2015 Dodge Journey westbound on Route 72 when the vehicle left the roadway. It entered the south ditch before striking a tree and coming to rest. Michalak and a male passenger were examined by Forreston Fire Protection District and EMS and released. Michalak was cited for improper lane use. The crash remains under investigation.

David L. Cunningham Jr., 38, of Monroe Center, was arrested and cited for driving while license revoked (two counts), failure to report an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon/no FOID card,

unlawful possession of firearm by felon, improper container of cannabis/driver and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

At approximately 9:06 a.m., deputies responded to the 4000 block of North Mulford Road for a single-vehicle crash that had occurred earlier in the morning. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the driver of the involved vehicle had left the crash scene.

While deputies were investigating this crash, a second crash was reported on Interstate 39 mile marker 108.

After further investigation, deputies learned the driver involved in the crash on I-39 was the same driver of the vehicle involved in the crash on North Mulford Road.

Cunningham was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held without bond.

March 30 Joan C. Stanis, 60, of Leaf River, was

Much Jr., 32, of Milledgeville, was traveling eastbound in a Chevrolet Trail Blazer when he lost control on the snow-covered roadway. The vehicle entered the south ditch and struck a culvert.

April 2 Regino Gallegos Jr., 56, of Austin, Texas, was arrested at 11:56 p.m. for disorderly conduct and obstructing a police officer after deputies were dispatched to the area of North Indian Heights Drive and West Mud Creek Road regarding a suspicious person.

Gallegos was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 3 Brandon Reints, 40, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 1:07 p.m. for domestic battery after deputies responded to the Mt. Morris Estates Trailer Park at 3747 Illinois Route 64. in reference to a 911 hang-up with people arguing in the background. Reints was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.
