March 7 hearing for watermain projects

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO – Polo citizens have the opportunity to weigh in on proposed projects aimed at improving the city’s water distribution system over the next several years.

A public hearing is set for March 7 at 6:45 p.m. at Polo City Hall regarding the $5.9 million worth of plans. Willett, Hofmann & Associates have offered more than 20 potential projects, not all of which the city plans to tackle, Public Works Director Kendall Kyker said.

“We can pick and choose any of that 20-some projects and get the dollar value at where we want it according to the grant money we’re going to get and how much we want to spend out of our own pocket,” Kyker said.

The projects are proposed to be broken into five phases, with construction taking place in intervals between October 2023 and September 2028.

One project the city definitely wants to pursue is drilling a new well – Well No. 5 – and constructing an accompanying water treatment plant, Kyker said.

The plan is to build the new well and the water treatment plant near the water tower, he said.

The new well would take over for Well No. 2, Kyker said.

“Well No. 2 is having a problem, and it needs to be abandoned,” Kyker said. “Or

The building in question is the current water treatment plant, which, according to the date on the building, was constructed in 1891. It’s located just past the train tracks on the north end of Polo, beneath

the east side of the bridge.

“It’s in rough shape,” Kyker said.

“We’ve kept it together as long as we possibly can, but it’s falling apart.”

Wells Nos. 1 and 2 are located there, although Well No. 1 is abandoned, he said.

Well No. 3 is further back in the same area and is in need of repairs and expansion, Kyker said.

Well No. 4 is near North Prairie Avenue and East Street and was created to replace Well No. 1.

Another project high on the city’s list of desires is replacing the watermain underneath Division Avenue, which also dates back decades, Kyker said. That would be a four-year project with five- to seven blocks accomplished each year, he said.

Funding for the projects could potentially come from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Public Water Supply Revolving Loan Fund, according to a packet from Willett, Hofmann & Associates. The loan would be repaid by slight increases in customers’ water bills between 2023 and 2028.

Currently, monthly residential water bills are $20.10 on average, the packet shows. If recommended water rates are used, the average monthly bill will rise to $30.69 in 2028.

City Clerk Sydney Bartelt noted that such an increase would have to be voted on and approved by the city council.

BY KAREN MERLAK We are finishing the month with beautiful sunny days. Each day brings us closer to the end of the winter season. The spring season brings new hope along with new life. This is the day that God has made and for this, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Katie Pfundstein and her daughters, Amelia and Fiona. Pastor Suzanne Hall-Stout shared her message of the morning. Suzanne shared her children’s message with our young friends, Amelia, Fiona, and Harper.

Each week, we are thrilled to welcome new and old friends to our services. Everyone is welcome to join us in person or online on Facebook Live.

This week begins the Lenten season. Pastor Suzanne will hold an Ash Wednesday service in the evening and drop-in hours during the day. Our church is active and looking forward to a bright future.

Early Saturday morning, I received a phone call from Matt. It was good to hear from him even though I missed sleeping in. Over the next couple of hours, we laughed and recalled some great memories.

In the afternoon, I traveled over to Mount Carroll to a local craft shop. They were offering classes on painting and staining benches. I met some great people and had a great time crafting again.

Not to mention, I have a nice new bench for my house.

This past Monday morning, several ladies from our worship committee met to prepare materials for Lent and help decorate the church for the season. Besides completing our work, we had a nice visit before leaving for the day.

On Tuesday, our school district closed again for the icy roads. I have forgotten how much fun snow and ice days can be. When my children were young, we would spend the day playing games, watching movies and baking treats. Now, the time is spent relaxing.

Our everyday lives can get filled with tasks that need to get done. We have a job to make sure we can meet our needs. There are things we need to do for our families and friends. There are things we need to do to help others.

We can easily fill our days so full that we are overwhelmed, tired or burned out. When we start to feel as if we are only working and not enjoying our time, we need to take a break. It is not easy to

take that break that we so desperately need.

An unexpected snow day feels like God is telling me to stop and take a break. I can easily overwhelm myself with work and tasks. I know I need some rest but I am not sure how or when I would find rest.

When I get the call very early in the morning, I have to check several sources to make sure I heard the message correctly. Besides a little extra sleep, there is time for my mind to rest. There is time to recharge so I can face issues with a fresh mind.

I need to learn how to find time to rest instead of waiting for rest to come to me. I need to allow myself to really recharge on a regular basis.

Resting is an important part of being our best. I am still learning to rest before life becomes overwhelming.

I hope to see you next week in our church in the country. Each week, we gladly welcome new friends and families to our services. Come and learn about the God who loves us. Spend time with us and find comfort and rest with the Father.

ehinton@oglecountynews.com OREGON – Three local residents are organizing a candlelight vigil to show support for the Ukrainian people following the recent invasion by the Russia military.

“Innocent people of Ukraine are being killed and injured,” said Lisa Schultz of Oregon, one of the organizers. “They are going through very terrible times right now. We want to do the candlelight vigil to show them we care about them and we support them.

And pray that this will end very soon and no more lives will be lost and they can be reunited with their families.”

Schultz said the candlelight vigil will be held on Saturday, March 5, around the historic Ogle County Courthouse in downtown Oregon.

Attendees are asked to assemble on the east side of the courthouse square,

along Illinois Route 2.

The event will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Schultz said.

Schultz is organizing the event with Gary Schrimpsher and Veronica Mathews.

“Candles will be provided,” Schultz said. “Please help us show Ukraine we support them and we pray for their safety.”

In the event of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, March 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the same location.

Oregon student wins spelling bee on ‘geocaching’ Merit Namaste Rose spelled ‘vaccination’ en route to victory

ttaylor@shawmedia.com DIXON – When “vaccination” comes up in a pandemic-era spelling bee, the way is clear.

So it was for 13-year-old Merit Namaste Rose, who nailed the word in the third round on the way to victory on Feb. 24 in the Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Regional Spelling Bee. “It’s kind of on signs everywhere.

You need to have it,” Rose said.

She won the contest in the 11th round by successfully spelling “geocaching.”

As champion, the eighth grader qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She also earned some snazzy prizes, including the 2022 United States Mint proof set, one-year online subscriptions to Encyclopedia Britannica and the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, a commemorative book from the national bee and a $100 Amazon gift card.

After “vaccination,” Rose moved through the next few rounds with aplomb, spelling “frugal,” “celebratory” and “emerald.”

The field, which started with 31 contestants at Dixon High School’s James A. Wiltz Auditorium, quickly was whittled down.

Five students were eliminated in the first round, seven in the second, eight in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Tom Wadsworth, who has been the presenter since 1983, said that in his opinion, this year’s roll of words was particularly challenging.

By the sixth round, it was a threeway contest. The other survivors were Jake Andrzejewski, an eighth grader at East Coloma-Nelson Elementary, and Declan McKinney, a fifth grader at

Rose spelled “altercation,” Andrzejewski had “sophisticated” and McKinney had “nocturnal.” In the eighth round McKinney bowed out on “besieged.”

Rose correctly spelled “genteel” and “caramel” while Andrzejewski got “tortoise” and “mantra,” having received confirmation from the presenter that the latter word could be pronounced with an “ah” sound.

The 10th round was decisive. Rose spelled “hollyhock” but Andrzejewski added an unneeded “o” to the spelling of “recuperation.”

As runner-up, Andrzejewski received a dictionary, the commemorative book and a $75 Amazon gift card. McKinney got a $50 gift card for third.

Rose appeared overwhelmed after the competition. She had spelled words clearly without hesitation, but when Wadsworth interviewed her after the award presentation at center stage before the assembled guests, she couldn’t speak. She nodded demurely and shrugged shyly to his questions.

Later, after receiving several wellwishes and congratulations, she was more relaxed. Soon she was bantering with her mother Lurana, who is also her spelling coach.

None of the words during the competition were surprises, they agreed.

“I can confirm, she knew all the words,” Lurana said.

“Wow, such a Spelling Bee Mom,” her daughter replied, smiling. She admitted she has much more studying ahead to become accustomed with the higher tier of words that will be used at the national competition.

Rose said she is not involved in any extracurricular activities, so she’ll have no distractions in preparing for nationals.

Liam Crumpton, a sixth grader from Paw Paw Junior High, was one of the more endearing contestants. In the second round he stopped dead four letters into “atonement,” asked for clarification on the word, started again, stopped, then rallied and spelled the word slowly but correctly to stay in the competition.

As the fourth round progressed, the tension on stage seemed to ratchet up.

In fact, each correctly spelled word, and there were five straight, seemed only to raise the stakes. Then Kate Viall of Ashton-Franklin Center went out on “Bowie” and Marley Linboom departed on “casserole.”

Rose is the first champion from the Oregon School District since Rachel Hendrickson won in 2006. Sarah Troutman also won in 2001 and 2002.

Rose continues a run of girls winning the regional spelling bee. Four girls have been the last eight champions. Girls have won 20 of the last 23 years.

Kathleen Keesey of Reagan Middle School was the bee’s two-time defending champion and reached the national semifinals finishing 16th in 2021 as a seventh grader. She moved with her family to Castle Pines, Colorado, in March.

She has won her school’s bee and the district level competition and is one of 300 contestants competing in the statewide elimination rounds.

The national spelling bee will be at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, during the week after the Memorial Day holiday. The finals are June 2.

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Adding plexiglass dividers, replacing water fountains with bottle fillers and implementing various technological updates are among the ways Ogle County officials are spending roughly $4.9 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds.

“We wanted to concentrate on what needed to be upgraded so that we met compliance for mitigation strategies,” Ogle County Board Vice Chairperson Pat Nordman said. “What we found is that we have older buildings, obviously, and we didn’t have the mitigation strategies at all.”

Even changing out the water fountains and putting up plexiglass was costly, said Nordman, who oversees much of the ARPA allocation process in Ogle County. Another large cost came in cleaning supplies.

“That [cleaning supplies] was a big piece of it,” Nordman said. “You wouldn’t think it, but it was.”

The funds for these projects came from the American Rescue Plan Act, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 11, 2021.

ARPA is a $1.9 trillion package that offers “fast and direct economic assistance for American workers, families, small businesses and industries,” according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury website.

One program ARPA supports is the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds program, which delivered $350 billion to state, local and tribal governments. Of that, $65.1 billion was designated for counties.

The amount each county gets is based on its share of the U.S. population, according to a National Association of Counties March 2021 legislative analysis of ARPA. Ogle County has received $4,918,404.50 in ARPA monies thus far.

It’s half of the $9,836,809 total allocated to the county; the second tranche will be delivered around May. “With the first tranche, we looked at every department and what they needed,” Nordman said.

No department was allotted a specific dollar amount, she said. They put the money where it was needed, making sure every department got a piece, Nordman said.

“We were trying to think about, ‘How can we improve on things and make it a healthier environment?’ ’’ she said.

When the second tranche arrives, a portion of it is going to be allocated to the community and community organizations impacted by COVID-19,

Nordman said. They aren’t yet sure how much will be set aside, or how it will be distributed, she said.

In January, the Treasury Department released a final ruling on how ARPA funds can be spent. The rule allows up to $10 million to be claimed as lost revenue.

It’s something Ogle County plans to take advantage of, Nordman said.

County board members will declare the funds lost revenue closer to when the second tranche arrives, she said.

“The nice thing is that, since it’s broadened, it gives us more flexibility,” Nordman said.

The Ogle County Board has allocated a majority of the $4.9 million the county already has gotten. The allocations and when they were approved are as follows: In August – $2,748,610.66 County clerk, election equipment, $480,917; Coroner, coolers, $14,172; IT, various projects, $1,941,149.13; Pines Annex, various projects, $177,780; Focus House youth home, $134,592.53.

October – $102,418.45 Regional Office of Education, $25,334; Animal Control, $4,506.48; IT, phone systems, $34,059.12; IT, computers, $36,000.

Effort to begin getting to know the Barber family begins

D

uring 2021, questions were asked about Barber’s Park.

When did it become such a big part of Polo and what all went on at this rather large area?

Also, is any of the Barber family left and how many of them lived in Polo?

So Linda tackled the big box under the table at the museum that was full of Barber history.

Would any information in the box tell of Barber’s Park?

Two big binders have been put together by Linda with one being “Meet the Barber Family” and the other, “C. R. Barber’s Driving Park.”

The Driving Park has two other names and they are “Barber’s Park” and “Barber’s Grove.”

As we get ready for our program March 9 given by Kevin Smoot, we need to have some background information and we will start with getting to know the Barber family.

Joseph Sr. and Mary Kent Barber started out in Maine in 1710 or 1711.

They had four children: Joseph, Lydia, Susanna and Thomas. Joseph Sr. had

Son Thomas served in the American Revolution and ended up with 300 aces of wild land. There seemed to be many wives, children, divorces and scandals. It was hard to keep all straight.

Then I saw where Thomas Jr., who was married four times, had these children: Relief Rand Barber, Lemuel Newton Barber, Chanceford R. Barber and Mercy Rozella Barber . These children were connected to Polo. There were other children but I was not familiar with their names.

Lemuel Newton Barber, also known as L. N. Barber, and Chanceford R. Barber had come west to Buffalo

Grove and opened a store. At some point they went back east and brought back with them their sister, Rozella Barber.

Relief Rand Barber was the oldest girl and she had to take care of the younger children when her mother died. When her duties were finished, she came to Polo and lived with her brother Chanceford. As a small boy, he had told his sister that someday he would build a big house and take care of his sister. Relief Rand Barber was also involved in creating a library for Polo. So the red brick house that is still standing is where Relief Rand Barber ended up living in Polo.

A grandson of Joseph Barber Sr. went to Marengo, Illinois. There were several Barbers who went with the 15th Regiment in the Civil War and they would have been from that twig of the family tree. Rozella remembered going to Marengo and visiting with that branch of the family.

The Barber brothers were in business in Buffalo Grove for 12 years and then they moved to Polo in 1855.

Chanceford R. Barber became a banker and L. N. Barber continued to be a merchant. They were both interested in doing things for Polo.

Chanceford became interested in buying land, raising livestock and owning farms. He built a big barn and had an orchard and many trees. This beautiful spot became Barber’s Park, Barber’s Grove and even Barber’s Driving Park since he had many horses. There was a race track and horse races. For a long time you could see the oval of the track along Eagle Point Road.

It was the site for picnics, reunions and baseball games. This is the site where Smoot has been uncovering treasures hidden many years in the ground.

Come to the Polo Historical Society program on March 9 to see what Smoot has to show us. It is 7 p.m. on that Wednesday evening.

Smoot to be speaker at Polo Historical Society meeting Visitors to the Polo Historical Society on Wednesday, March 9, have a chance to learn all about “dirt fishing,” aka metal detecting.

Kevin Smoot has been metal detecting for treasures in Barber’s Park.

“He had a small bell at our Christmas meeting, which was very interesting,” said Betty Obendorf, the museum’s volunteer curator.

Smoot has been metal detecting in the Sauk Valley more than five years with a special focus on the Polo area. He will show an assortment of items he has found, from coins to sleigh bells. He also will demonstrate how the equipment works and explain the range of the equipment’s

findings.

His metal detecting and research partner, Jesse, will join him so you will be able hear about his experiences, too. Both are members of the Illinois and Iowa Treasure Hunters and Metal Detecting Club.

Metal detecting isn’t just about finding silver and gold. The real treasure is the history discovered through research and the lost items recovered.

There will be a question and answer period following the program along with refreshments.

The Polo Historical Society and Museum is located in the old Tri-County Press newspaper office at 113 N. Franklin St. in Polo.

OREGON – Serenity Home and Hospice will host its first Art Dash Fundraiser at Cork and Tap, 305 W. Washington St., Oregon, on Wednesday, April 6 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Tickets are divided into two categories, “Dasher” which cost $100 and “Spectator” which cost $50.

The fundraiser will feature 50 local artists from throughout the nine counties that are serviced by Serenity, all of whom have donated original artwork worth at least $100.

After the “Art Preview,” three attendees who have purchased “Dasher” tickets will be randomly selected to dash for an art piece of their choosing. Every “Dasher” will have the opportunity to go home with an art piece.

“Spectators” will not have the opportunity to “Dash” for art. Both “Dashers” and “Spectators” will be able to enjoy live music, light bites, view the art and mingle with many of the artists.

Funds raised will be used to help continue to provide care and free, ongoing bereavement services.

Ice boxes the norm before the age of refrigerators

I

remember the refrigerator in my folk’s home around 1940. The refrigerant unit was a globe shaped unit located on top of the refrigerator.

This was given to my parents for being the first customer of electricity on their farm. Electricity was first supplied to cities and communities before it became available to farm areas.

Before refrigerators, common kitchen appliances were ice boxes. Ice boxes were a compact nonmechanical refrigerator.

They were lined with tin or zinc and insulated with cork, sawdust, straw or seaweed.

Lester Myers owned and operated the Oregon Ice House located on the west side of Rock River. Ice houses were buildings used to store ice throughout the year. Ice was cut from a channel of water starting at the dam up to where Black Hawk Statue is located.

There would be 50 to 75 men and horses out on the ice. The ice would be 15 to 18 inches thick and was cut into pieces 2 feet long and 18 inches wide. A one man saw, 6 feet long, was used to cut the ice. Sleds loaded with ice were pulled by two horses to the ice house.

Homeowners would hang a sign on their screen door so the ice man would know how much ice they needed. If they needed 50 pounds of ice, they hung the sign with the 50 on top.

Later, the Oregon locker plant was where the Super Value parking lot is now located. Each person had their own locker.

Two of the first home refrigerators were General Electric in 1911 and Frigidaire in 1915. These two types of refrigerators were driven by belts attached to motors located in the base-

“Those Were the Days” will resume 2022 sessions beginning on March 26 at 10 a.m. at the Oregon Depot Museum.

The program goes back to “Those Days,” so how about 1945 in downtown Oregon?

“Dick Feibel, a lifelong friend of mine, grew up at 208 N. Fifth St., next door to what was then the Farrell Funeral Home,” organizer Chris Martin said. “As a grammar school boy after school and often on the weekends, he would head downtown and just hang out at the retail stores. He knew all of the merchants and most of their employees. In fact, as a young teenager he worked for several of these merchants.

“So, be a part of this downtown experience. We hope that you will join us at the Oregon Depot Museum for “A Walk Through Downtown Oregon in 1945.”

Martin said.

OREGON – Oregon High School Spanish teacher Kimberly Radostits has been nominated as a finalist for this year’s Illinois Teacher of the Year award.

The OHS staff planned a surprise announcement in Radostits’ classroom. Several former students came or sent videos congratulating her.

The OHS staff got her balloons, flowers and a cake.

Also present were School Board President Bryan Wills, OHS Superintendent Tom Mahoney, as well as Regional Superintendent Chris Tennyson.

Radostits is one of the 10 Regional Teachers of the Year and will be competing for the Illinois State Teacher of the Year later this spring. The annual Teacher of the Year program honors incredible classroom educators who have made lasting impacts on the students, families and fellow educators in their school communities.

Radostits began impacting students’ lives at OHS as a teacher in 2007. She achieved National Board Certification in 2011. From this, she has had the opportunity to write articles, present at conferences, provide professional development on technology to her colleagues, write curriculum, design courses, take her students abroad and help plan numerous school events.

In addition to teaching, she has been one of the facilitators of Oregon’s award-winning Hawks Take Flight program and New Teacher Academy. Additionally, she is one of the moderators of an online professional network for Spanish Teachers with

more than 13,000 members. Her students affectionately call her Ms. Rad out of appreciation.

“Ms. Rad is always asking how she can help with school problems and even issues at home,” said OHS freshman, Christian Selden-Rodriguez, who sent the letter nominating Ms. Radostits. “No matter who you are, Ms. Rad will care for you. She is always looking for ways to improve the lives of her students and her teaching methods.”

Following is Selden-Rodriguez’s letter: To Whom it May Concern; My name is Christian Selden-Rodriguez. I am a freshman at Oregon High School in Oregon, IL. I am writing this letter of recommendation for one of the best teachers ever, Ms. Radostits (or Ms. Rad, as we all call her).

You can almost always tell the reason why a teacher is teaching. Some teachers come off as not engaged with their students and do not seem to love their job. Some teachers choose their profession

because of their love of the subject they teach. Others love to help kids in need, Ms. Rad teaches for both of those things with the most passion I have ever seen. She steps into the room with an aura of love and fun every single day. I have not felt like I am safe and cared for by a teacher like this ever in my entire school career.

Ms. Rad is always asking how she can help with school problems and even issues at home. No matter who you are, Ms. Rad will care for you. She is always looking for ways to improve the lives of her students and her teaching methods. There is never a dull moment in her classroom. You can tell that she looks forward to coming to school every day. 100% of the time she has her students engaged in the topic at hand. Not only is she good at keeping us paying attention, but she also teaches in a very digestible manner and no kid is left behind in her class.

Ms. Rad shows nothing but love and respect to everyone in her class, no matter what background you have. You always hear her name being brought up when it comes to teachers who are amazing and helpful. School has never been a safe place until she became my teacher.

I know that I can come to her whenever I need help with anything. It is easy to tell that she truly loves teaching; there is really never a moment where she is not up and ready to go. She treats every student as if they were her own. She is also the teacher that is so approachable. This is why I think Ms. Rad is the best teacher.

Ogle Democrats donate to pantries For the second consecutive year, the Ogle County Democratic Central Committee has taken holiday party contributions and turned them into a donation to benefit eight area food pantries.

Each food pantry received a donation of $100. The food pantries that received donations were Polo Lifeline Food Pantry in Polo, Rochelle Christian Food Pantry in Rochelle, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Mt. Morris, New Life Community Center in Forreston, People Helping People in Byron, Immanuel Lutheran Good Samaritan in Lindenwood, Lifeline Food Pantry in Oregon, and Bread of Life Food Pantry in Stillman Valley.

Members of the Oregon Woman’s Club recently heard a presentation by Sara Morris, the new administrator of Pegasus Special Riders – a therapeutic horseback riding facility located south east of Oregon.

Club members learned that therapeutic horsemanship develops a special relationship between the riders, the horses and the instructors that helps people of varying abilities to engage to promote his or her confidence and self-esteem, and help improve posture, balance, hand-eye coordination and muscle tone.

“The lessons and riding experiences are also useful for relaxing muscles, increasing joint mobility, and developing concentration, coordination, concentration and self-discipline,” Morris said. “Our programs are open to both children and adults who are physically, mentally and/or emotionally challenged. The weekly lessons include both riding and the care of the horses, which helps develop the bond between the rider and the horse.”

Pegasus’ horses are specially trained to work with the special-needs riders. “The horses are ‘bomb proof’” Morris said. “That is they are chosen for their calm, gentle temperaments and are trained not to startle easily or to be upset by loud noises or unusual situations.”

Pegasus Special Riders is a nonprofit organization funded solely through contributions, and staff are all volunteers. “We need volunteers for everything from barn chores, working with clients on riding lessons, fundraising events, newsletter prepara-

Waste Reduction/Recycling Grants for 2022 are available to Ogle County businesses, schools, churches and nonprofit groups wanting to establish or improve on waste reduction and recycling programs and services.

The grants are up to $2,000, and funds are limited, so they will be awarded on a competitive basis in amounts from $100 to $2,000 in three rounds or until funds are depleted.

The matching fund grant pays 80% of the total project cost up to $2,000, and the applicant must provide a minimum 20% match of the total project cost. Example: Total project cost – $2,500; grant amount $2,000; applicant matching amount $500.

The deadline for submittal of applications

for the first round of grants is 4 p.m.

Thursday, April 7.

The application for the grants is simple and flexible. Businesses could use grant funds to help purchase waste reduction and recycling materials and equipment such as collection bins, carts, balers and storage containers.

Equipment needed to switch from disposable packaging to reusable packaging for products and supplies also could be considered. Businesses are encouraged to consider projects to reduce food waste or implement food waste recycling programs.

Waste hauling companies could use grant funds to improve the quantity and quality of materials collected in their curbside recycling collection programs. This could be done through promotional efforts, instructional stickers for carts and bins, direct mail and other educational efforts.

Schools may seek funds for special

projects that will further a student’s understanding of how to reduce the amount of trash sent to the landfill.

The requests may be for materials and equipment, such as recycling bins/carts, videos, books, worm (vermicomposting) bins, composters, or other waste reduction or recycling equipment.

Municipalities seeking to improve commercial, curbside or multifamily recycling programs are encouraged to apply.

Grant applications for equipment and materials needed to improve electronics recycling options in Ogle County are also encouraged since most electronics have been banned from landfills since 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Kenny, in infancy.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, April 9 at Barnacopia from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Larry will be laid to rest at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo.

The Church of Jesus Christ Forever children presented a check for $3,700 to the Lifeline Self Help and Food Pantry of Oregon.

“Knowing how blessed they have been to not only grow up in households where the love of God runs strong, but also to have warm clothes on their backs, roofs over their heads and full bellies, the children of The Church of Jesus Christ Forever are reminded and encouraged to give to those less fortunate. With that, they presented to Lifeline of Oregon a check for $3,700,” said Dr. Joy Ryland, formerly of Oregon.

“In an age where it’s ‘all about me,’ we are trying to teach our children the respectability and goodness of giving,” Ryland said. “We are hopeful that this contribution awakens in them the reality of loving your neighbor, especially those less fortunate.”

It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Dr. Ryland of Monroe, Wisconsin, has seen those less fortunate in her practice and works to find affordable options for those patients.

“The Greatest Giver healed the sick and fed the hungry. We want similar learning for our children. What better way to remind them of the love of Jesus Christ than to give to such a need. May we all remember those less fortunate,” she said.

Strong Hawk softball offseason poises team to soar

The Oregon Hawks softball team looks to build on a strong 2021 season that ended in the sectional championship game at Oregon Park West.

Junior all-conference players Ava Hackman, Liz Mois and Reilee Suter will help form a core of returners.

The Hawks celebrate after an upset win over second-ranked Richmond-Burton in the sectional semifinals in June of the 2021 season.

One of the staples of a great program is the offseason work a team puts in. OHS softball had players on travel teams competing in softball tournaments all across the country. Incom-

ing freshmen Ella Dannhorn (Midwest Aftershock), Abree Barker (Express), and Emma Molnar-Schlictmann (Thunderstix) have played plenty of tournaments around the state.

Dannhorn is a speedy utility player and Molnar-Schlictmann is a pitcher and power hitter. Barker is a fast lefty with a great glove. All three look to push for varsity time as underclassmen.

Sophomores Gracen Pitts, Haleigh Burkhart, Abi Fletcher and Olivia Paul participated in many summer and fall tournaments for Avalanche Fastpitch. Sarah Stevens played last summer for Illinois Gold and this fall for Express.

They all have definitely gained valuable experience in growing their softball skills in preparation for a successful high school season.

Juniors Abi Rogers, Laila Anderson, Reilee Suter and Liz Mois played

on their Avalanche team coached by OHS coach Nate Rogers. The highlight of their summer season was winning the Avalanche 4th of July Tourney and then placing third at a huge USSSA Nationals Tournament in Iowa. Anderson, Suter and Mois all gained MVP honors at Nationals for some key plays during the tourney.

Even multi-sport athletes Kate Bowers and Ava Hackman managed to find time and play valuable summer and fall games for the Avalanche organization. Hackman hit a game-winning walk-off home run for her team this past fall season.

Oregon Hawks Mia Trampel, Lena Trampel, Abi Rogers, Abi Fletcher, Jess Suter, Haleigh Burkhart and

Reilee Suter, playing for Avalanche 16U, won the six-team 4th of July Tourney in Mt. Morris last summer.

Finally, the senior leadership of this group in the offseason will definitely shine through during the Hawks’ 2022 spring campaign. Mia and Lena Trampel helped lead an Avalanche team to a tournament championship in July. They followed that up with great tournament showings this fall as well.

Bella Koertner played all summer for her dad Brian’s Avalanche team and they ended with a second-place finish in a very good Beloit tournament. Bella also subbed in for the previously mentioned third-place National team and played fantastic.

Finally, Jess Suter worked hard this summer and fall playing as much

It was an exciting week of postseason action W

ith all the excitement associated with postseason sports, I still feel sorry for the high schoolers that missed out on it last year.

There were packed gyms at boys basketball regionals, the upcoming girls state basketball finals and a major upset in dual team wrestling.

For the record, it was two years ago that boys basketball was shut down right before the 1A/2A state finals were to begin. At least wrestling and girls basketball completed their seasons in 2020.

Probably the most excitement coming from a gym last week was at Lanark, where two overtime thrillers were played on the same night.

Freeport Aquin upset the No. 3 team in the state, Fulton, 59-56. Immediately afterward and by a near identical score, it was Sterling Newman edging Eastland 58-57.

Listening to Don Werntz describe the action on radio, I felt like I was right there among the packed crowd in the gym for both games. Let’s hope our politicians never take this kind of fun away again.

In another emotional powder keg, it was East Dubuque taking the No. 1 team in 1A, Scales Mound, to overtime at a jam-packed Scales Mound gymnasium.

A sports expression often heard is how hard it is to beat a team three

Scales Mound already had done that to East Dubuque. I do not know what the expression is for the fourth time two teams play, but the odds must increase on the loser eventually winning.

That’s what almost happened, but Scales Mound prevailed in the end and its dream of a state final appearance is still alive.

In 2A, there was another upset, as Stillman Valley beat Winnebago at the Oregon Regional. Remember how big of a deal it was when Oregon beat Winnebago a few years ago for the first time in decades?

That’s what it must have been like at the Blackhawk Center for a program such as Stillman, which rarely has a winning season and is known more as a football school.

Byron almost pulled another upset at Oregon. In the closing seconds, the Tigers had the ball and a chance to defeat No. 1 seed Eureka, but couldn’t get a shot to drop.

I wonder if there is a COVID-19 effect to all the uncertainty in basketball? Seems the prognosticators don’t

know who the best teams are anymore.

My alma mater Rochelle even came into its regional as a No. 5 seed and knocked off Dixon and Sterling, two teams they had lost to earlier in the year, to claim its first regional title in 13 years and the first in 12 years of coaching for Tim Thompson, who succeeded Russ Zick.

Thompson is a genuinely nice guy and those are the coaches you cheer for to finally get a title. For good measure, the Hubs also won their conference in a drought longer than the regional.

As I sat in the gym at Rochelle watching the regional final with Sterling, I thought about how sad it was for anyone from last year who didn’t get to experience the postseason and not just the players and coaches. How about the cheerleaders, band, fans, students, parents, officials and us media types?

Wrestling came to an end with individual girls state champs crowned and the boys dual team championships. The IHSA functions much better when state tournaments aren’t as spread out.

In an efficient use of time and space, both events were contested at the same site over the same two days. It appeared to be an efficient marriage and credit for whoever came up with the idea.

Lena-Winslow, the odds-on favorite to win 1A, was upset at the sectional by

No. 11 Sandwich. Sometimes there can be a hangover effect from the individual state tourney.

Historically, teams that do well at the individual event have difficulty getting up for a paltry dual meet. Oregon experienced that in 2000 in an upset loss to Riverdale at the sectional.

Catching up on some old news, the IHSA has decided to seed all football classes 1-32 instead of a north-south geographic breakup of 16 teams each.

A few years ago, it was even worse with some 8-team quadrants. This decision was long overdue, though some still feel travel is an impediment in a state 390 miles long.

For other sports that have multiple contests within a regional or sectional, yes. But not football, which is a once-aweek affair.

Trust me, people do not mind traveling to see a high school football playoff game. In fact, some people relish the opportunity.

I know coaches and players do.

Of any part of the state, this will help the NUIC conference the most.

Everyone knows the state title is usually decided among these schools long before the actual championship game.

Match Play Tourney: The Northern Illinois Bowling Conference (NIBC) held its Top 10 match play tournament Feb. 24 at Park Lanes, Loves Park and Feb. 25 at Plum Hollow Family Center, Dixon.

The top 10 individual conference season averages qualified for this event. Four boys and four girls from the Oregon High School bowling teams qualified.

The boys were led by Brandon Rowe with 1.870 pins with a high game of 256 in third place, Stylar Klapp with 1,808 pins with a high game of 246 in fourth place, Brady Davis with 1,805 pins with a high game of 227 in fifth place, and Isaac Kaltenbrun with 1,687 pins with a high game of 213 in sixth place. Rowe will receive a $50 scholarship, while Klapp and Davis will receive trophies for their finish.

The girls were led by Ava Wight with 2,011 pins with a high game of 235 (twice) in second place, followed by Paige Beauchem with 1,652 pins with a high game of 192 in fifth place, Mackenzie Alford with 1,514 pins with a high game of 194 in eighth place and Kendra Ehrler with 1,474 pins with a high game of 188 in ninth place.

Wight will receive a $75 scholarship, while Beauchem will receive a trophy for the finish.

Eight students caught vaping on school grounds

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Eight Oregon school district students were caught vaping on school grounds between Feb. 17-23.

“We’ve been seeing an issue with vaping devices,” Oregon School Resource Officer Matt Kalnins said.

“It’s not necessarily tobacco. I’ve been finding kids anywhere from 10 to high school [vaping].

“They bring them to school, they keep them with them, they’re constantly using them,” he said. “It’s a huge issue with nicotine with them.”

Of the eight students, one was 10 years old, another 11, four were 12, one was 14 and one 18.

Kalnins said when these situations happen, he issues city citations – often carrying a penalty of a fine.

It’s not an arrestable offense, and it’s not something that goes on a legal record, he said.

The school usually contacts the parents at that point, Kalnins said.

There can be additional consequences the student faces from the school, Kalnins said.

The high school has installed vape detectors, which work similarly to smoke detectors, he said.

The devices can detect vaping, smoke and THC – tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical in marijuana that causes most of the drug’s psychological effects.

“They either know somebody who could get them [the vape pens] for them or they’re taking them from their parents,” Kalnins said when asked where the children could be getting the vape pens. “I believe they know somebody that is getting it for them.”

It’s a big issue with teenagers and children, he said.

“Just the addiction level that these things have.

There’s got to be more knowledge and info out there,” Kalnins said.

Feb. 20 Esmeralda Diaz, 17, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 12:28 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 600 block of Gale Street.

At 4:25 p.m., police responded to a car vs. train traffic crash at the intersection of Second ad Collins Streets involving a 2008 Chrysler driven by Rochelle D. Beaty, 62, of Dixon, which had been struck by a BNSF train that was traveling westbound.

Beaty was issued a citation for disobeying a stop sign.

Feb. 21 Ray C. Allen, 74, of LeClaire, Iowa, was issued a citation at 7:26 p.m. for speeding, 48 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of North Fourth Street.

Feb. 25 Jaime Carter, 40, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:32 a.m. for driving while license revoked and possession of methamphetamine (Class 3 felony) after a traffic stop at Mud Creek Road and Illinois Route 2. Carter was transported to Ogle County Jail where she was held pending an appearance before a judge.

Juan Manuel Huertes-Ceballos, 43, of LaSalle, was arrested at approximately 10:02 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at Illinois Route 38 and Mulford Road.

Huertes-Ceballos also was cited for illegal window tint. Huertes-Ceballos was released on bond.

Feb. 26 Austin Sumner, 28, of Washington, Illinois, was arrested at 8:02 p.m. for driving while license suspended and improper cannabis container after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 99. Sumner also was cited for one tail light, no insurance and failure to change address.

Jorge Cabrera, 32, of Rochelle, was arrested at approximately 8:21 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at North Main Street and Illinois Route 38 in Creston. Cabrera was cited for illegal window tint and operating uninsured motor vehicle. Cabrera was taken into

custody without incident and released on a $2,500/10% I-Bond with a return court date.

Shundell Brown, 25, of Rockford, was arrested at approximately 8:32 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 109 northbound.

Brown also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, no child restraint and possession of cannabis. Brown was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Asia Harron, 65, of Rockford, was arrested at 10:55 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 104. Herron was released on scene and will appear in court on April 1 at 9 a.m.

Feb. 27 At approximately 12:56 a.m., deputies, Byron Police Department and Byron Fire Protection District responded to Tower and Mill roads for a one-vehicle crash involving injury. An investigation showed that a Buick sedan driven by Jess Smith, 23, of Winnebago, was traveling west on Tower Road and failed to negotiate the curve. Smith left the roadway in the south ditch and received heavy damage from striking an embankment. Smith was transported to a local hospital for suspected minor injuries.

The front seat passenger, McKenna Hawkins, 23, of Winnebago, also was transported to a local hospital for suspected serious injuries. Smith later was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and cited for improper lane use, failure to

reduce speed, no insurance and failure to use seat belt. Smith was released on an I-Bond with a return court date.

Charles Peterson, 42, of Pecatonica, was arrested at 4:18 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 2700 block of North David Court in Oregon.

Peterson also was cited for no front registration and expired registration.

Peterson was taken into custody without incident and released on a $2,500/10% I-Bond with a return court date.

At approximately 8:37 p.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 500 block of Illinois Route 251 for speeding. Jason Mireles, 41, of Rochelle, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (crack cocaine).

Ryan Fenton, 31, of Oregon, was arrested for an Ogle County warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle. Mireles and Fenton were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Jacob Saenz, 18, of Rockford, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. for driving with no valid driver’s license. Saenz was arrested on Illinois Route 251 near Scott Road after he was stopped for speeding. Saenz was released on bond.

March 1 Lucero Montalvo, 30, of Rochelle, was arrested at approximately 12:05 a.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile marker 110.

Feb. 22 James Turcato, 27, of Byron, was arrested at 3:10 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at Third and Franklin streets in Byron. Tucato also was cited for expired registration and no front registration. Turcato was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Feb. 24 Christopher Taylor, 33, was arrested for violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act (Class 3 felony). Taylor was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

Cristian Menjivar-Alvarenga, 28, of Rockford, was arrested at approximately 1:13 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 108.
