As we know in northern Illinois, winter brings much snow and ice. Even though the weather can cause many problems for us, the frosted trees and fields are truly a sight to see. For all the ways God provides and protects us, we are forever grateful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Deb Ohlwine. Pastor Suzanne Hall Stout brought the message of the morning. Bev Kearns provided beautiful music for meditation for the service.

We gathered for a shortened service this morning after a three-week pause. Next week, we will have a short prayer service to allow time for our annual board meeting.

Sandra Ford has returned from Bloomington, where she stayed with her daughter, Crystal Patterson and her husband, Jack. While there, she visited with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including the newest addition, Jackson Millmore, son of Hannah and Josh.

On Monday evening, I met with Vicki Hay and Suzanne to discuss the changes to our worship schedule over the next couple of weeks. This afternoon, Suzanne, Deb, and I met to discuss the upcoming board meeting. Our church family is looking for-

POLO – Alderperson Donald “D.J.” Sanders Jr. is stepping down as a representative of Polo’s Ward 1 at the end of January.

“It’s an honor to serve the citizens,” Sanders said after the Jan. 17 Polo City Council meeting. “It’s always been my position that I had no right to be here. The citizens gave me the right to be here. I was here to serve them.”

While he has enjoyed the past three years as a council member, Sanders said he doesn’t feel he’ll have the time to properly serve in that capacity because of new commitments associated with a job promotion.

“I view this position as something you almost have to treat it as a full-time job, even though it’s not,” he said. “You have to put in a lot of time outside of here [council meetings] and I don’t feel that I could do that and give the citizens their monies worth.”

During the Jan. 17 meeting, Mayor Doug Knapp thanked Sanders for his service.

“I know you and I haven’t seen eye-toeye on certain things, but that’s what makes the process work,” Knapp told him. “I’d just like to say that we’re going to miss your passion that you’ve had, your

ward to an active year.

To end the week, Pastor Suzanne took lunch from our church family for the teachers and staff of Centennial Elementary School. They recently participated in remote learning. We appreciate all of our area teachers and staff.

This past Saturday, Stephanie and João made the journey to Salt Lake City to their new apartment. Their dog, Pepper, did not care for the plane ride to his new home.

They are now waiting for their furniture to arrive. Hopefully, they will quickly become accustomed to their new surroundings.

This past week, I called Matt for an update after receiving the news they have changed his orders. We had been preparing for him to move to North Carolina in March. For now, we are waiting to see where he will move to next.

It is harder to get in touch with Clint with the time difference and work schedules. He is still doing well and keeping busy. Most days, I am very happy for my kids and the lives they are building so far away. Some days, I just miss having them here.

This past Saturday, I stayed home to work around the house. My incredibly helpful neighbor cleared away the snow from my driveway and sidewalks. I am so

commitment to the job and we thank you for serving. We’re going to miss you greatly.”

Sanders’ term was set to expire on May 1, 2023.

Also on Jan. 17, City Sanders Jr. Clerk Sydney Bartelt was recognized for earning the certified municipal clerk designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

Snow is not all bad. My students love to play on the snow piles outside. I have friends that look forward to riding snowmobiles and other winter activities. For me, I appreciate the glitter effect on freshly fallen snow.

In the dark, snow is white and quiet.

Now, when the light from the moon hits it just right, the reflection, like glitter, can light up the night. The same thing can happen to us. When we are least expecting it, the light of Jesus shines on us and we reflect His love, bringing light to the dark.

When we build a relationship with Jesus, His love is so strong, it shines and sparkles all around us. We want to share His love with those around us. It is hard to keep it all inside. His love is for all of us.

I hope to see you at our church in the coming weeks. Come and experience His love as we share in worship and prayer.

Maggie & Amos Foundation gives $4,950 to 21 area educators

azoellner@shawmedia.com CHANA – The Maggie & Amos Foundation awarded nearly $5,000 in “Elf-Sized” grants to area educators for classroom activities and improvement projects.

The 19 “Elf-Sized” grants – which totaled $4,950 – went to 21 educators in a dozen schools. Recipients were announced Dec. 26.

“We had a really good mixture of what grants were proposed for,” said Megan Dettman, one of The Maggie & Amos Foundation’s main coordinators. “We did get some pretty awesome ones.”

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) established by friends and coworkers of Margaret “Maggie” (Rosko) Meyer who died in a house fire in Byron on

Oct. 19, 2016, along with her 3-year-old son, Amos Meyer.

Duane C. Meyer, Maggie’s ex-husband and Amos’ father, is charged with their murders and arson. The case is pending in Ogle County court.

“It [the foundation] is about spreading goodwill in their name and not letting people forget what good they brought to the world,” Dettman said.

The “Elf-Sized” grants are meant to help educators offer that extra bit of fun in their classrooms, she said.

Often, money for such things comes out of the teacher’s own pocket, Dettman noted.

This is the fifth year The Maggie & Amos Foundation has offered the grants, she said. Funding comes from

the Infinity Run, a fundraiser the foundation hosts.

“We didn’t do the grants our first year because we didn’t really know how the foundation was going to evolve,” Dettman said.

The maximum grant amount this time was $300, she said. They got more than 35 applications, but unfortunately didn’t have the funds to fulfill all requests, Dettman said.

The grants are named “Elf-Sized” because of the small amount and because “Elf” was Maggie’s favorite movie, Dettman said. It’s also why they tend to announce the winners around Christmas.

Recipients are selected by a blind vote, Dettman said.

Kalnins puts together a description of the grant proposal and amount requested, then sends that out to people involved in The Maggie & Amos Foundation, Dettman said. They rank the proposals and Kalnins tallies the results, she said, adding that Kalnins doesn’t vote.

They fund as many grants as possible with their budget, Dettman said.

Weather makes time for completion of special books

I

t all started very innocently when the weather turned cold and icy. I did not want to take down my Christmas decorations just yet but here I was stuck in the house.

What could I do to pass the time of day while the wind blew? I also was told by my doctor to stay in and not run into the virus.

I started by cleaning a closet and ran into two books given to me by Bruce and Robin many years ago when Amy and Andrew were born. They were titled, “Look Who’s a Grandma.”

My first thought was that this was to be all about my life of growing up. I soon learned that was not it at all.

They were to be filled with all sorts of stuff about those wonderful grandchildren. Things such as the birth announcement, the first time you held that precious child, baptismal pictures, first home, the first Christmas, and the first birthday.

Cute little stories as they grew up were to be jotted down in the book.

This was not a job to be taken lightly.

Ashton-Franklin Center High School — Ashton Jeri Dempsey, a science teacher, is purchasing solar panels for teaching, which will allow students to explore electricity, alternative energy and circuits.

Kelly Viall, an agriculture and science teacher, is getting sets of Realityworks injection pads that provide students a realistic experience of giving injections in both medical and veterinarian careers.

Kim Penick, a math teacher, is supporting her “Mystery Student” Challenge program, which promotes positive student behavior and classroom camaraderie.

I loved all the things I had saved as I read through all the stories and looked at all the pictures. Now was the time to put it together and fill in all the family tree. It was a good winter day job and I started in. It took several days as I worked along.

Finally I came to the first Christmas and there was no cute little picture. I hauled out albums and there was a box in the garage but still no picture. I then remembered I had a tote in the closet with pictures for all the family in manila envelopes. That was hauled out. Still no luck By this time I had pictures, boxes and albums strung out over the entire house. I finally had to settle for a picture of Amy holding her little sister Beth on her first Christmas. But what I liked best was the story of one of Amy’s early visits to the doctor.

As she was leaving, the doctor let her pick something from the small box of toys. She picked three things and so the doctor informed her that there was one rule and that was that she could only take one thing. She put one toy back and said, “I will only take two.”

He told her that she could only take one and so she put another one back.

As she did so she looked him squarely in the eye and said, “Well, I will just come again another day.”

Of course I had to call Amy who is now a doctor herself and share her story. How many little toys does she hand out these days and do doctors even do this anymore? We laughed together. Her book is now finished and the next time she comes she will get it.

Now I have Andrew’s book to finish and I am searching for the first birthday picture. That little book should take care of this week!

Rochelle Middle School — Rochelle Jayme McCombs, a seventh grade teacher, looked to her students to determine what she should purchase with the grant money. Students created a wish list of items they felt would help them learn at their best, including some specialty seating items and other “fidgets and focusers.”

Rochelle Township High School — Rochelle Hannah Busching, a foreign language teacher, will use her grant funds to replace the 36-year-old equipment used by the high school’s speech team, including speakers and microphones.

Someday it would go in the correct way.

When Amy was two, Andrew was born and I was given a second book identical to the first. I started all over again saving clippings, pictures and anything else that looked like it could go into the book. Someday I would have time to put it all together neatly.

As the years went by, the little books were tucked neatly away in my closet on a shelf. Every now and then I would see them and think that I really

Founder Tori Kuzlik plans to continue fundraiser at Stevenson University in Maryland next year

azoellner@shawmedia.com BYRON – As a sixth grader at Byron Middle School, Victoria “Tori” Kuzlik expected to host the winter clothing drive and fundraiser she’d come up with once, maybe twice.

Things did not go according to plan, and Coats for Hope – a charity supporting domestic violence survivors and shelters – grew more than she ever expected.

“The community support has been just amazing over the years,” said Tori, who turns 18 on Jan. 29. “It’s just, I didn’t ever think this was going to grow.”

Coats for Hope is finishing up its seventh year and has collected about 47,000 winter clothing items since its creation, including about 3,000 dona-

tions in the past three months, Kuzlik said.

They’ve also raised about $25,000 since the charity’s 2015 inception.

Financial donations for this year are being accepted through Jan. 31.

Bob Kuzlik, Tori’s father – as well as “chauffeur, secretary and head publicist” – shares his daughter’s awe of what the charity has become.

“If you would have told me this would have lasted seven years, I’d have said, ‘No way,’” Bob said. “But here it is seven years later and growing strong. … To me, that’s absolutely amazing.”

The idea for Coats for Hope was sparked after her dad bought her some new winter gear, Tori said. She didn’t know what to do with the old clothing, and so she set the items aside, thinking to find someone who could put them to good use.

“Later, I came up with the idea to start a coat drive … for the shelter who helped my father and I,” she said.

HOPE of Ogle County and the YWCA of the Sauk Valley in Sterling assisted the pair in getting an order of protection after they experienced domestic violence, Tori said. They also

provided her with two years of free counseling.

She wanted to help the shelters in return, and so she approached her school’s principal, who gave the go-ahead to hold the first Coats for Hope.

“It started out as three boxes in my middle school, and media caught onto it and it just blew up,” Tori said. “Now here we are, seven years later, taking it to Maryland with me.”

The Byron High School senior intents to attend Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland, come fall.

Tori isn’t declaring a major just yet, but plans to study pre-med. For a minor, she said she’s looking at human resources “so I can help grow Coats for Hope and find more ways that I can be helpful.”

“There are a lot of big cities around, so there are going to be a lot of shelters and a lot of different ways [to help],” Tori noted.

Stevenson University is about 25 minutes from Baltimore and 80 minutes from Washington, D.C. New York City is about 3 hours and 15 minutes away.

Tori’s goal is to grow Coats for Hope to a nationwide charity, Bob said.

Abraham Lincoln visited, spoke in Oregon in 1856

By OTTO DICK Abraham Lincoln spoke in Oregon on Aug. 15, 1856. This was a campaign event for John Fremont, a Republican presidential hopeful. Lincoln traveled to Polo the night before on the Illinois Central Railroad and was guest of Senator Aplington. He rode the Illinois Central Railroad three years after it was completed through Ogle County in 1853 from Woosung to Polo.

Lincoln’s previous appearance in the Oregon area was during the Blackhawk War. This Republican rally was held at 505 N. Fourth St. A brass band started the program, followed by a prayer. During the prayer, the 60-foot platform holding 50 people collapsed. Wentworth and Lincoln were not on the platform.

The program lasted two and a half hours. The only account of Lincoln’s speech was that he talked about the Missouri Compromise. After the program, both speakers were entertained at Moore’s Hotel, now the Patchwork Inn.

February Finds set for Saturday, Feb. 5, in Mt. Morris

MT. MORRIS – The annual February Finds antiques and collectibles market will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge 1551 Family Center, 485 E. Hitt St. Admission is $3, with no charge for children age 5 and under.

Chana to celebrate its birthday

Chana will be marking 151 years of existence this year with some special events.

The village board decided to hold off on any sesquicentennial plans in 2021, but now Chana community volunteers and entities are beginning to coordinate a Sesquicentennial Celebration event for the second weekend of June.

“Activities will include The Maggie & Amos Foundation’s 5K and 1-mile run/walk, free children’s events, an antique tractor show and parade, and a corn hole bags tournament,” said Lynn Kalnins, one of the event organizers. “A street dance, displays of historical memorabilia from Chana history, the dedication of the new Pine Rock Township Soldier Memorial, food, and much more will be offered.”

The next planning meeting is 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Chana Education Center, 204 Main St., in Chana.

There are roughly 4,000 children between ages 5 and 11 in Ogle County, but only 570 are fully vaccinated, Auman noted. The age range is “ lagging behind.”

“We’re trying to work with schools to get those numbers up, as well as promoting vaccination for the [5- to 11-year-olds],” he said.

Health department staff also are working closely with long-term care facilities, all of which have “many cases,” Auman said. The cases include breakthroughs and reinfections, he said.

“Several of our long-term care facilities are considered to be in ‘outbreak’ currently,” he said. “It’s a very tough situation that they’re facing right now.

“Not only are they caring for very sick residents, but they’re also dealing with staff shortages, and then you add in [additional] staff shortages due to

COVID illness in those personnel,” Auman said. “So I really feel for the long-term care facilities in our county.”

The IDPH website puts Region 1’s intensive care unit bed availability at 7% as of Jan. 17.

“There are federal resources coming to Rockford hospitals to help out with the situation,” Auman said. “As recently as a week ago, there were only two ICU beds available in those Rockford hospitals where those federal teams are assisting with support.”

Twenty-five people died from COVID-19 in Ogle County between Dec. 1 and Jan. 18, which is a “significant number of deaths,” Auman said. It brings the county’s total COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began to 120, he said.

“It is a little bit of a cause for concern, as we went many months in the fall without very many deaths,” Auman noted. “So we’re continuing to keep an eye on that.”

In a Jan. 11 interview, Auman stated most people who died in the past two months were not vaccinated.

A total of 54.02% of Ogle County’s population are fully vaccinated, with 68,176 vaccines having been administered, Auman said. Of those doses, 13,368 were boosters.

In other business, board members approved spending $86,395 from the county’s American Rescue Plan Act’s funds.

Pfizer, Moderna and J & J vaccines and boosters will be available, plus vaccines for 5- to 17-year-old youth. The vaccinations are free.

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Ogle County’s COVID-19 positivity rate and total number of cases have risen since last week, according to county Public Health Administrator Kyle Auman.

“We’re still experiencing higher numbers – some of the highest numbers that we’ve seen since the beginning of the pandemic,” Auman told Ogle County Board members during their Jan. 18 meeting.

As of that time, the county’s positivity rate was 22.58%, and there were 1,739 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people, he said.

The rate of cases is calculated by taking a county’s number of cases over the previous seven days, dividing that by the county’s population and multiplying the result by 100,000, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Auman said his department has followed 12,073 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. Currently, they’re following 2,510 active cases and 626 associated close contacts, he said.

Schools are the No. 1 place people are exposed to COVID-19, Auman said. More than 1,600 cases associated with schools have been identified in Ogle County, he said. “[Schools are] more than double the next identified exposure location,” Auman said. “So we work very diligently and closely with the schools to try to

Students learn through Ag in the Classroom program Grade school students throughout Ogle and Carroll counties learned about Christmas tree farms in December.

“There were 38 programs presented to 783 students during the month. The Ag in the Classroom program teaches students that many items we use every day originate from crops grown by farmers.

Some crops we eat. Others are used to make our homes beautiful. Many are used to make clothes and other helpful items. Moreover, some crops help us celebrate,” said Melinda Charbonneau, Ag in the Classroom program coordinator.

Trees, like corn, are grown on farms. Tree growers do many of the same things other farmers do.

However, a tree crop is different because it takes seven to 10 years before a tree can be harvested.

“In addition, a tree farmer must plant three new seedlings for every tree that they harvest because seedlings have many enemies including insects and disease, rabbits and deer, “ Charbonneau said. “Like other crops, trees must be fertilized and weeded. The farmer also prunes the trees to control how fast they grow and shapes them so when they are sold, they have a shape people will like.”

Charbonneau said harvest time is very busy for growers. “The trees that will be cut must be selected and tagged. Once the trees are cut, they are baled nice and tight so that the branches will

not be damaged as they are shipped to tree lots to be sold. Because trees stay in the fields for so long, they have four to 10 years to be a habitat for small animals and insects. They also make oxygen for all living things. Therefore, the next time you think of products grown on a farm, add Christmas trees to your list,” she said.

Charbonneau thanked Dollinger Christmas Tree Farm, Lanark, for the many tree samples they provide each year.

“These samples provide an opportunity for students to compare the various kinds of Christmas trees,” Charbonneau said.

Agriculture in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society. Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them – on their plates, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well, and in earth-friendly fuels and plastics.

Born: May 3, 1933 in Freeport, IL Died: January 14, 2022 in Rockford, IL Loda Mae Bruning, 88, of Pecatonica, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at Alden Debes Rehabilitation and Health Care in Rockford.

She was born May 3, 1933, in Freeport, the daughter of Gerhard Herman and Pearl Mae (Janssen) Manus. She graduated from Pleasant Prairie Academy in German Valley in 1951.

Loda married Leslie “Les” Carl Bruning on November 16, 1951, at Silver Creek Reformed Church in German Valley. They farmed together in rural Pecatonica for six years and then returned to the family farm as its fourth generation farming family. Loda was the Ridott Township bookkeeper when Les served as the township supervisor. She was a 4-H leader and Girl Scout town chairwoman while her children were growing up. Loda was an active member of Silver Creek Reformed Church, having taught Sunday school for many years and a member of Women’s guild.

She also was a member of the German Valley Historical Society. Loda enjoyed working on genealogy and collecting Precious Moments figurines and dearly loved attending her

grandchildren’s activities.

Loda is lovingly survived by her son, Lyle (Lezlie) Bruning of Coal Valley; daughters, Linda (Dale) Van Haften of Hamburg, MN, Lisa (Gary) Bronkema of Forreston; grandchildren, Jennifer Van Haften, David (Sandra) Van Haften, Julie Van Haften, Ricky Van Haften, James Van Haften, Anthony Van Haften, Corrina (Harley) Jones, Ashley Van Haften, Jacob Van Haften, Eric (Allissa) Bruning, Kurtis (Kara) Bruning, Cory (Hilary Springman) Bruning, Eden (Alex) Henigan, Tanner (Kelsey) Bronkema, Brady Bronkema, Whitnie (Brian) Van Utrecht, Brendon (Jacquel) Rush; twenty great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Hazel Peters, Mary Manus; brother-in-law, Ronald Wiese; numerous nephews and nieces.

Bowling Hawks bowlers win: The Oregon Hawks boys bowling team ended its regular season with a 3,263-2,683 victory over Rockford Lutheran at Town & Country Lanes in Mt. Morris.

Oregon finished the season with a 16-3 record. The Hawks had three bowlers reach the 600 series mark and were led by Brandon Rowe with a 607 series (209, 200, 198).

Rowe was followed by Isaac Kaltenbrun’s 602 series, Roberto Hernandez’s 602 series, Brady Davis’ 519 series, Stylar Klapp’s 516 series and Bryan Immel’s 417 series.

The Oregon JV raised its season record to 18-0 and was led by Codey Dunbar with a 500 series.

Regional tourney: The Oregon boys bowling team competed in the IHSA regional bowling tournament on Jan. 15 at Blackhawk Lanes in Sterling, finishing in fifth place as a team with a 5,388 score.

Advancing to the sectional tournament this weekend was senior Isaac Kaltenbrun with a 1,204 series and junior Brandon Rowe with an 1,121 series.

Wrestling Hawk grapplers busy on the mat

BY RANDY HOLLAND Oregon sent 10 wrestlers to the Kewanee Invitational Tournament on Jan. 15 and all 10 came home with medals as the Hawks took third place.

Seth Stevens took the 138-pound title and Anthony Bauer took first at 145 pounds.

Finishing second for the Hawks were Ethan George at 160 pounds, Gabe Eckerd at 170, and Evan Flaharty at 285.

Preston LaBay at 113, Ethan Mowry at 120, Dalton McCammon at 152, Andrew Young at 195 and Briggs Sellers at 285 all wrestled back to the third-place match and took fourth.

Stevens had takedowns to the back to pin in 40 seconds in his first two matches and had two sets of backpoints to win the final 9-2. Bauer had a bye, pinned with a half nelson at 1:03, and hit a toss to the back at 107 in the title match.

Now is the time to talk about wrestling and bowling

S

ince basketball was touched upon last week, it’s time to talk about wrestling and bowling. It’s only two weeks away until regionals and what a doozy that will be.

Besides the host Dukes, who had been ranked No. 1 in 1A, there’s Dakota and Lena-Winslow, who have combined to win seven of the last state titles.

This regional was so tough two years ago (the IHSA didn’t host a sanctioned tournament in 2021) that Oregon failed to qualify a single wrestler for the sectional. Considering the strong heritage the program has had, it was incredulous.

It’s not a knock on Oregon, but rather a reflection of the hotbed of competition. The Hawks did rebound nicely in 2021 for the IWCOA unofficial state tourney and the young team has high hopes looking forward.

Polo’s team must also navigate through the same regional. Things heat up even more at the sectional, traditionally the most difficult in 1A. The same is true for boys bowling at the Rockton Hononegah Sectional, of which Oregon feeds into. How good is Rockford area bowling?

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert Harlem rolled a 6,721 at the regional, 300 pins better than any other team in the state. Harlem, Hononegah and Guilford have each won two state titles in past 10 years.

Oregon finished one spot out of making it out of the regional, but had Isaac Kaltenbrun and Brandon Rowe advance as individuals. In a 1-class tourney, the difficulty level is ratcheted up even higher.

This year marks the 10-year anniversary that the Hawks qualified as a team for the state tournament, placing 18th overall. Among the 24 team qualifiers, they were the smallest school, a commendable accomplishment for coach Al Nordman and his squad.

Nordman is back at the helm, taking over for Eric Carlson, who had run the program the past five years. Did you know that nearly as many boys (18) are out for bowling as there are for basketball?

The girls don’t have bowling regionals until Feb. 5 and, like the boys, it will be a rough road to hoe. They have a smaller group with just six participants.

Without a doubt, the top Oregon sports performance of the winter is the school record 729 series by Ava Wright.

The junior had games of 267, 269 and 193 last week.

For the first time ever, girls will have the chance to compete in an IHSA wrestling tournament. There aren’t enough for regionals, but there will be four sectionals throughout the state in the 1-class system with the final scheduled for the last weekend of February.

For IHSA sports, regionals, sectionals and supersectionals are assigned geographically. Ever wonder how assignments are made for the state finals?

It is done by the “Rolling of Peas”, described by the IHSA as a random, unbiased way to determine who will play who in the first round of a state final.

Say there are eight sectionals that feed into a state final. Each site is given a corresponding number on a pea and then are randomly drawn, a tradition dating to the 1940s.

The peas are placed in a bottle and are rolled out. The original leather bottle and peas are on display at the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

While we are on the subject of prep sports history, did you know fencing has been taking place in Illinois for 100 years? The IHSA does not sponsor fencing, but recognizes it as a sport.

Long a domain of Chicago area schools and only a handful at best, it is alive and well with a conference consisting of 10 affluent suburban schools and a pair each from Wisconsin and Indiana.

But it wasn’t always so exclusive.

Chicago Marshall, an all-black public school won four straight state titles in the 1960s and Pleasant Plains, a smaller downstate school won it in 1967.

An obscure sport, fencing never caught on, with never more than 15 schools a year offering it. Finding a coach, securing equipment and paying for insurance have to be hindrances.

George also had a bye and scored three sets of backpoints before he pinned with a half nelson in the semifinal. He got driven to his back in a half nelson and pinned in 43 seconds in the first-place match. Eckerd ran a chicken wing at 1:15 and led 8-0 when he caught a half nelson at 2:30 to advance to the first-place match where he was pinned on a monkey roll at 3:28.

Flaharty got a takedown to the back at 1:26 and turned with a hammer lock at 1:25 to get to the title match. Going for the medal, Flaharty lost a takedown with under a minute to go and an escape came too late to help and he took second with an 8-7 loss.

Labay had two pins on his way to the medal match where he was reversed to his back at 4:19. Mowry pinned and won 11-7 then lost a 12-3 major decision in the medal match. McCammon had two pins before he was pinned with 4 seconds left in the third-place match.

Young also notched two falls to get to the third-place match where he was pinned in a cradle at 2:39. Sellers got pulled back in a chicken wing in 50 seconds in the medal match. He had a bye and a second-period pin to get to the medal round.

The Hawks wrestlers traveled to Mendota to face Sterling Newman, Sherrard, and the Trojans on Jan. 11, defeating Mendota 54-10, dropping a close one to Sherrard 41-39, and losing 43-21 to the Comets.

Newman took four major decisions, had three pins and a forfeit on its way to the win.

Winning for Oregon were Seth Stevens 9-6, Zander VandeSand with a half nelson at 2:34, and Evan Flaharty on a hip toss at 1:21.

Zander Downs took a forfeit. Griffin Marlatt, Lane Halvorson, Jackson Glendenning and Anthony Bauer lost the majors. Ethan Mowry, Austin Peterson and Landen Elder were all pinned in the first period. Seth Rote lost a late takedown and went down 7-3.

Polo man, 23, facing child pornography charges

A 23-year-old Polo man is in Ogle County jail, charged with three counts of possession of child pornography, the State Police said in a news release.

Tristan C. Smith was arrested after a search of his home in the 600 block of Mason Street Tristan C. Smith that was conducted in the wake of a multi-agency investigation, the release said.

Evidence supporting the charges and five weapons were seized, the release said. No details were provided on either.

The ISP Division of Criminal Investigation, District 1 Troopers, Homeland Security, Dixon Police Department, Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, and Polo Police Department, conducted the search, the release said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Mississippi man pleads guilty

A Mississippi man has pleaded guilty in Ogle County Circuit Court to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Rocky Lara, 25, pleaded guilty to the Class X felony when he appeared before by Judge John C. Redington on Jan. 10.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said the charge was levied following a complaint made to the Rochelle Police Department in 2015.

The sexual assault complaint was made by a female minor, Rock said in a news release.

“During the investigation, the defendant (Lara) was developed Rocky Lara as a suspect,” Rock said.

Predatory criminal sexual assault of a child has a sentencing range of six to 60 years in prison followed by three years of mandatory supervised release, Rock said.

Lara’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 15 at 1:30 p.m.

A Rochelle man was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Talon T. Drown, 34, of Rochelle was sentenced Jan. 6 by Judge John B. Roe after pleading guilty to the Class 2 felony.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said the charge stemmed from a September 2021 investigation by the Rochelle Police Department after a Talon Drown female minor levied the allegations against Drown.

“The defendant will be required to register as a sex offender when he is released,” Rock said in a news release.

A Rockford man pleaded guilty Jan. 5 to attempted first-degree murder.

Leonard Smith, 48, is scheduled to be sentenced on March 3, at 2 p.m. by Judge John B. Roe. Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said the Class X felony Leonard Smith charge stemmed from a June 2018 incident in which Smith was charged with stabbing a person in the area of 4989 North Route 251, near Davis Junction.

Attempted first-degree murder has a sentencing range of six to 30 years in prison followed by three years of mandatory supervised release, Rock said.

“The sentence is served at 85 percent,” Rock said.

SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Jan. 10 Luna V. Barrett, 20, of Princeton, was arrested at 8:51 a.m. for driving without a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 5000 block of Illinois Route 2. Barret was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Chase Schott, 21, of Monroe Center, was taken into custody and cited for driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, transporting open container of alcohol, improper traffic lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. About 4:46 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a driving complaint of a U-Haul truck traveling west on Illinois Route 64 from Woodlawn Road. A short time later, it was reported the U-Haul struck a Jeep, causing injuries.

An investigation showed Schott was traveling west on Route 64, crossed over the center yellow line and entered the eastbound lane. Schott then struck a Jeep operated by Erik Desch, 30, of Sycamore, who was traveling east on Route 64 just east of Interstate 39. Schott struck the Jeep on the driver’s side causing totaling damage and the deployment of multiple airbags for both vehicles. The Jeep continued east and exited the roadway, entering the south ditch and coming to rest facing west.

The U-Haul continued into the south ditch and came to rest facing southwest, about 40 yards from the roadway.

Desch and Schott were transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. Schott was released on a $3,000/10% I-Bond with a return court date.

Jan. 14 Logan D. Smith, 30, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:44 a.m. for driving without a license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 400 block of Illinois Route 2.

Smith was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 1:53 p.m., deputies responded to a juvenile disturbance at the Chana Education Center. After an investigation, a 10-year-old juvenile was arrested for aggravated battery.

The juvenile was released into the custody of his mother.

Jan. 15 Diane Harrod, 53, of Byron, was arrested for aggravated domestic battery. Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance in the 300 block of East South Park Drive in Byron at 5:21 p.m. Harrod was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Jan. 16 Deputies and Byron EMS responded to the 10800 block of Illinois Route 2 about 3:06 a.m. for a two-vehicle crash with injury.

An investigation determined a Ford Mustang driven by Jason Eldon, 36, of Rockford, left the roadway and stuck an embankment, becoming disabled in the southbound lane.
