OREGON – Ogle County residents got their first taste of real winter Tuesday as several inches of wet, heavy snow fell across the region with more accumulation forecast throughout the evening and later this week.

The National Weather Service issued another winter storm warning at 2:29 p.m.

Tuesday that ran until 4 a.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 10.

“Heavy, wet snow and dangerous travel conditions expected. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches.

Winds gusting as high as 40 mph,” the NWS said in its weather alert. “Travel will be difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.”

“Snow rates will exceed 1 inch per hour at times this afternoon. Strongest winds will occur this evening,” the alert said.

Ogle County was among more than a dozen northern Illinois counties under the winter storm warning.

Another winter storm was being forecast for Friday.

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – Sarah Wright just smiled when asked if she was worried about the snowstorm that was forecasted to bring several inches of snow to northern Illinois this week.

“I’ve got my snowshoes,” the 69-yearold said as she stood outside her home – a tent at Lowden State Park.

With temperatures dropping to the mid-30s and 7 to 11 inches of snow forecast for Tuesday through Wednesday, Wright did make one modification to her cabin tent.

“Come and look inside,” she said Sunday, peeling back the tarp that covers the tent. “I took one of the extension poles that you use for painting and I made a center pole because this tent doesn’t have a center pole.”

On Tuesday, Wright said her modification was holding strong.

“So far doing great and no snow on my tent. The next wave will be the test,” she said.

Wright has been living in a tent with her dog Luna at Lowden since October.

Throughout the spring, summer and fall she alternated between the area’s state parks while trying to find rental property that will allow her to keep her pets.

She previously lived in Polo before the apartment building she was living in was cited by the city as unfit for human occupancy and has since been slated for demolition.

Because of Luna and her three cats, Wright has been unable to find rental housing that allows tenants to have all her pets. Her cats are staying with a friend in Polo while Wright and Luna stay at Lowden.

Many area residents have reached out to Wright to help her secure better accommodations. Brad Parkinson, 59, of Oregon, gave Wright a 1995 cargo van and a 1975 camping trailer after he met Wright while he was walking his dogs at the state park.

Parkinson even covered the cost of the title and registration transfer and six months insurance for the van.

The van and camper are just steps in helping her get back on her feet as she searches for a new, permanent residence, he said.

On Dec. 23, Parkinson and Tony Duran of Franklin Grove organized a motorcycle fundraising ride that started with a raffle at Ogle County Brewery in Oregon and traveled 10 miles north on state Route 2 to Byron before heading back south 9 miles on River Road to Lowden.

“We are still trying to raise money for Sarah for her continuing journey and fixing up the camper and finding a permanent location,” Parkinson said.

“Right now she is in the middle of refurbishing and hopes to be in there soon probably February. Many moving parts to the story, but ultimately trying to keep her comfortable until the end result.”

A native of Virginia, Wright moved to Illinois in 2011 to be near her father.

In 1998, she visited the Polo area and White Pines State Park with her dad.

Her path to living in a tent at Lowden included being flooded from her rental home near Fulton, living out of a storage unit, staying in an unheated garage loft in the Rock Falls/Sterling area (offered by a friend at no charge) and a homeless shelter.

During those months, she continued to seek a place for herself and her pets and she has applied for housing through the Ogle County Housing Authority.

She started camping at White Pines State Park and Lowden in April, alternating between the two, adhering to the parks’ 14-night consecutive stay limit.

Without a vehicle, Wright has relied on the kindness of others and one Polo man in particular, Mark McGinnis, who moved her and her belongings to

and from each park every two weeks during the summer.

Inside her dome tent, Wright has cots, a heater and a small cooking area.

The tent is covered in blue tarps to help keep it warm and dry. She keeps water in jugs, collected from one of the park’s public drinking faucets, and has access to electricity at the campsite.

Wright worked in law enforcement while in Virginia and spent a few years in security for a retail store in Virginia Beach in addition to other jobs, she said.

Social Security is now her sole source of income.

On Sunday, Wright said she had plenty of propane for her small heater that she uses inside the tent.

“I’ve got 120 pounds of propane for

my Mr. Buddy,” she said, referring to the heater. “And I have my sled and a shovel. I’ve camped in Alaska. I am not worried.”

Wright said she also has all the parts to repair the Cascade camper and has been getting help from more local residents to get the repairs made.

“We’re getting a real high-end cover so we can really get working on the inside of it,” Wright said. “Depending on the weather, we hope to get that work done and get it ready for the cats next weekend. We pretty much have all the materials for it. And the van is running really well.

“The outpouring of love and gifts that people have given me has been amazing. I am so thankful.”

Trolley tours planned for Town and Country Days

Here we are into a new year and we are beginning to make plans for what is to come.

I am still hanging onto Christmas although I have started to put away all the Santa stuff. The inside Christmas trees have shifted from vintage shiny bright balls to snowflakes.

I can never just take things down and put it all away like most people. I work in shifts and gradually go from Christmas to winter to Valentine’s Day. Little by little I wean myself away from Santa to winter and suddenly it is spring. The small 4-foot tree stayed up all year and constantly was in a state of change. So right now I have two trees that look like winter but eventually the big one will be totally gone.

I could never be one of those people who the day after Christmas has

At the museum, Silas has taken down the roping from the fence. We had many nice comments so that was a good move this year to drape the greenery on the beautiful fence made

by Paul Graehling so many years ago.

We still have to put away the decorations inside the museum and we eventually will do that. We do not have any programs in January or February since those two months can

be difficult to get out if weather is snowy or icy.

I already have found myself several times unable to get out because of icy snow. Falling is not something I want to do. Kevin is always at the museum on Saturdays ready to help you in any way.

When the flag is out, he is there and numerous people stop in and that is nice. This weekend, he had a bus driver stop by to see our museum. He brought a load of high school students from out of town. He stopped by to see what our museum was all about and he was pleasantly surprised. People were surprised to see a big yellow school bus sitting out in front.

We are working on our schedule for this year. On March 6, Susan Zook

will give a program on Nepal. She taught school there many years ago and returned for a visit last year. She will show us pictures of how it has changed as the years have gone by.

Keep that date and program in mind.

You will hear more about it later.

We also are working on another trolley tour during Town and Country Days. It again will be at the Buffalo Grove Cemetery. This time, people will get out to see more of the cemetery. We may have drama students portray some of the early settlers.

That will be really neat.

We also will use the Henry School so people will get out there to see the inside. Watch for the trolley tour again.

Winter solstice is always on my December calendar

By OTTO DICK Winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun appears at its most southerly position, directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricon.

The lack of direct sunlight on Dec. 21 makes it the shortest day of the year for those in the U.S. All locations north of the equator see daylight shorter than 12 hours and all locations south see daylight longer than 12 hours.

What causes the winter solstice?

Because the Earth is tilted on its rotational axis, we have changing seasons.

As the planet moves around the sun, each hemisphere experiences winter when it’s tilted away from the sun and summer when it’s tilted toward the sun.

Scientists are not entirely sure how this occurred, but they think it happened billions of years ago.

What places on Earth feel the effects of changing daylight and nighttime? Daylight decreases dramatically the closer you are to the North Pole in

winter solstice.

People living near the equator barely notice the difference with fewer minutes of daylight during the winter solstice than they have during the summer solstice. It’s pretty much a 12-hour day all year long there.

During the winter solstice in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, which lies north of the Arctic Circle, they won’t see any sunshine. Residents of Nome, Alaska, see three hours and 54 minutes of very weak daylight.

Because of time zones differences, Europe, Africa and Asia mark their

winter solstice on Dec. 22.

Other events marked on my December calendar were Dec. 7 for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Dec. 24 for Christmas Eve, Dec. 25 for Christmas Day and Dec. 31 for New Year’s Eve. Daylight in Oregon, Illinois, for Christmas Day 2023 was from 7:16 a.m. to 4:24 p.m.

Summer solstice 2024 is June 20 at 3:50 p.m. Winter solstice 2024 is Dec. 21 at 3:10 a.m.

IDNR to host informational meetings about chronic wasting disease SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will host public meetings in Lee and Bureau counties to provide information about the recent detection of chronic wasting disease, its effect on free-ranging deer populations and IDNR’s efforts to control the disease.

IDNR staff biologists will be available to discuss management strategies and answer questions about the disease, commonly referred to as CWD. Landowners, hunters and concerned citizens are encouraged to attend. CWD is an important issue that will continue to dominate future deer management discussions in northern Illinois.

“CWD is an always-fatal neurological disease that threatens the long-term

health of white-tailed deer in Illinois.

First documented in Illinois in 2002 near Roscoe, CWD has been detected in 20 counties across the northern edge and northeastern portions of Illinois and as far south as Kankakee and Livingston counties,” according to an IDNR news release.

Affected counties include Boone, Bureau, Carroll, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Jo Daviess, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee, Livingston, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Will and Winnebago. Most recently, CWD was detected in Lee County in 2021 and Bureau County in November 2023.

Polo man’s fishing lure collection numbers in the thousands

cbielema@shawmedia.com POLO – Lyle Reap was busy at it last month. He’d checked some traps he had set, had been working on some machinery and was preparing to give a tour of his fishing lure collection.

He’s amassed more than 15,000 fishing lures since he began collecting them 10 years ago after his wife, Melody, signed him up to become a member of a fishing lure collectors’ club. Some lures he bought online, others from friends who made them. He also has been going to fishing lure collector events over the years to buy them.

He will be going to one in Milwaukee on Jan. 17-20. But this time, he won’t be going there to buy. Instead, he will be attending to sell them off, piece by piece, display case by display case, as the result of a terminal cancer diagnosis.

As to how difficult it is to break up his collection: “It’s going to be hard someday,” he said. “It hasn’t hit me yet.

It will.”

Reap, the owner of Reap’s Paint Spot who did interior painting, drywalling and ceiling work for 52 years and is semi-retired, fished as a child. He grew up in Erie, later lived in Savanna and graduated from Polo High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1967-69. He met his wife, Melody, shortly after returning home.

“I didn’t fish for a long time after we were married and then in 1988 I started bass fishing. I’d bought my first boat, a used boat, and went to the Mississippi,” he said.

He joined a bass club, to which he belonged for 30 years, fished in tournaments and spent time out on the Mississippi River and local ponds. He taught his daughter, Trish, and two granddaughters, Carly and Mallorie, to fish.

In fact, he took both of those granddaughters out to fish on their first birthdays. Each girl’s catch of that day, with grandpa’s help, has been mounted on the wall alongside a fishing pole and their gear to mark the occasions.

Knowing of his love of fishing, his wife in 2014 signed him up to be a member of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club. He’d collected lures over the years, but the membership cranked up his interest.

It’s safe to say he got hooked.

Along with buying lures off the internet and getting them from friends, he started attending fishing shows. One of his first was in Milwaukee in 2015.

Now a walking encyclopedia of fishing lure knowledge, Reap knows what he paid for each lure and what it’s worth

“I’d start out with one and then I’d buy on the internet to get different colors,” he said.

He also knows the age of each lure, what it is made from, the material used for the eyes and information about the box it came in. The boxes themselves carry value depending on their age, rarity and condition.

“Every box is worth something,” he said.

“They pay a lot for boxes,” Melody added.

He now has an out-building with two large rooms full of fishing lures, fishing gear and antiques. Some are displayed in old jewelry cases, on a former eyeglass display from an optometrist’s office, on antique pieces, such as a wagon wheel, and in hutches.

Some are in flat cases, while hundreds hang from the ceiling above. In one room, a cactus spine hangs from the ceiling and lures hang from the spine.

The holes in the spine make it perfect for displaying the lures, Melody said.

“You can hang a lure on anything,” Melody said.

The lures are displayed in groups, such as the peanut butter lures named for their color. A bright pink collection of lures hangs from the ceiling and there are brightly colored contemporary wiggle fish lures in a glass-top table.

The lures are displayed as mini collections based on the companies that made them – Puppette, Berkley, Bagley, Pfleuger and Heddon among them.

But bare spots are beginning to appear among the collections.

The 76-year-old Reap is a Vietnam War veteran who served as an Army

combat medic for 14 months. He has survived five types of cancers in 15 years, but now has an aggressive lung cancer attributed to Agent Orange exposure. He has been told he has six months to a year left to live.

Because of his diagnosis, Reap is making plans to dismantle his collection. He has been bringing lures from the fishing building into the house to set them in display cases. The selling price he is seeking for each lure, or in some cases lure collections, is written on the glass door right above the lure. There will be 800 8-foot tables full of lures at the Milwaukee show, where he will sell pieces of his collection in January.

“They come from all over the country,” he said of the buyers.

But there is at least one lure that will not make the trip to Milwaukee.

“I’m thinking about keeping this one,” he said. “Mel can keep it.”

Sheriff’s office announces holiday enforcement results

OREGON – The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and law enforcement across the state for the holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” drunken-driving enforcement campaign.

From Dec. 15 through Jan. 2, the Sheriff’s

office showed zero tolerance for impaired driving, arresting seven offenders. During the enforcement campaign, deputies issued 142 total citations for offenses including: • 20 arrests for no valid/suspended/ revoked driver’s licenses • Seven arrests for DUI • Three arrests for outstanding warrants

• Two arrests for resisting or obstructing a police officer • Two citations for illegal transportation of alcohol • One citation for a cannabis violation • 53 citations for speeding violations • 31 citations for registration violations • 13 citations for no valid insurance • One citation for a child safety

restraint violation • 14 citations for other traffic offenses “We need to drive this message home: Impaired driving is a seriously risky business. It’s illegal and it endangers the driver, their passengers and everyone else on the road,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

She was born on a farm near Baileyville, Illinois on May 6, 1938 to the late Peter and Marianna (Janssen) Ruter. Janice married Melvin L Colberg on June 28, 1964 at Forreston Reformed Church in Forreston, Illinois. Janice attended Rural Schools and Forreston Schools and later obtained her GED. She was a member of the Faith Reformed Church in Lanark, Illinois.

She had worked at Structo, Burgess Battery, Micro Switch, Prairie Advocate and PNC. Janice was an accomplished artist in many different areas: cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, painting, ceramics and doll making.

Her greatest passions were being a Mom and Oma (Grandmother in German), drinking tea,

speaking Platt (low German) and being the go-to person for the Ruter family geneology.

She was a very active member of the Rund Dee Tee Pot (an Ostfriesen heritage group).

She never knew a stranger and everyone was always invited in for a cup of tea. Janice is survived by her husband Melvin of Freeport, Illinois, daughters Valerie (Brad) Woessner of Shannon, Illinois and Natalie (Andy) Grebner of Monroe, Wisconsin; her grandchildren Benjamin Woessner, Hannah Woessner, Jacob Grebner and Madalyn Grebner; her brother Roger Ruter of Shannon, Illinois and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Carolyn Ruter. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 6, 2024 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston, IL (203 3rd Ave) with Rev. Brian Janssen officiating. ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – The respite that snowplow operators and their families received over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays was over with the season’s first major winter event this week.

The Ogle County Highway Department was ready for whatever Mother Nature tossed at it.

“In anticipation of the snow, we will have the plow blades mounted on all of our trucks in advance of the storm,” Ogle County Highway Engineer Jeremy Ciesiel said Jan. 5. “We will also preload the dump bodies with salt to expedite our departure.”

Illinois Department of Transportation trucks were traversing state Route 2 between Dixon and Oregon on Jan. 5, spraying a liquid de-icing material on the roadway through Castle Rock State Park in anticipation of precipitation.

“We also apply de-icing material to bridges ahead of the weather. Since bridges and culverts are cooled from both above and below, they are the first areas to freeze. The de-icing chemicals help prevent the structures from icing over,” Ciesiel said.

He urged motorists to be prepared for turns in the weather.

“As with any winter event, we want the traveling public to be safe,” he said.

“Drifting from blowing snow tends to be patchy,” he said. “Long stretches of clean pavement can lead to a false sense of security and an isolated drift can take a driver by surprise. We recommend that all drivers take it slow, especially when approaching intersections. Give yourself plenty of time and space to come to a stop. It is also a great idea to leave more space between vehicles to provide for more time to react to changing conditions.

“Lastly, please be patient with those working to remove the snow and ice from the roadways. Never closely follow a plow truck. They are spreading salt and ice abrasives. It is also wise to slow down when passing a plow in the opposite direction.”

This week’s winter events follow an unseasonably warm and snow-free holiday season that gave snowplow operators across the region the opportunity to spend the holidays at home without being called out to plow in the wee morning hours.

“All of our employees were able to enjoy the holiday with their families and friends uninterrupted,” Ciesiel said.

Sports scrapbooks shine light on past seasons Recently, I was invited by Jim Hess of Byron to view some sports scrapbooks and other artifacts he has accumulated over many decades. It was a lot of fun reading about stories from not just Byron, but others schools around the county.

For example, one of the scrapbooks was kept by Robin Jarret’s mother during the 1965-66 Byron basketball season. Jarret, who would go on to be one of the top orthopedic surgeons in the area, along with Eddie Harmon, Bill Lutz, Dean Ferb and Jim Hogan gave the Tigers a formidable unit under coach Joe Parks.

What stood out about that season is Byron going undefeated against everyone it played except for Forreston. Not only that, but Forreston beat Byron four times, including a season-ending loss in the district championship game.

Some of the names from that stellar Forreston team were Don DeVries, Greg Ludwig, Bob Ross, Ron Abraham, Jim Van Ness and Ron Meyer.

Back then, the Cardinals had one of the most successful coaches around in Bob Brinkmeier (356-138 in 18 years at Forreston).

It was the fifth district title in a row for Forreston (26-2) in what was a

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert one-class system. In that era, small schools played in a district before advancing to the regional where the larger schools lay waiting.

In 1966, Forreston lost to Rock Falls at the regional. Likewise, in the previous four years, good Forreston teams were taken down in the regional by bigger schools.

Mr. Hess had plenty of stuff for me to pore over and also took me to the Byron Museum, which displayed some of his items from track and field.

Living a few miles away, I felt a bit embarrassed for never having been to this nicely appointed museum.

If one thinks about it, every household with collections of school sport memories are mini museums in themselves. In a spare bedroom closet, I have newspaper clippings from football and track and field that my mom saved for me.

Yes, they hold meaning to me, but does anyone else care about the 1975 football playoff quarterfinal between

Rochelle and Geneva or the 1976 conference track meet? As I downsize in my later years, do I ask my kids if they want my collection or simply toss it in the dumpster with everything else?

Probably the latter as memories are best served by those who lived them. Suddenly, “you wake up and realize time has slipped away.” That’s what Paul Anka sang in “Times of Your Life.”

As the song continues, “Gather moments while you can.” That’s where moms come in handy. When you are making memories as a young man or woman, they don’t have the same significance to you that they will later in life.

Moms intuitively know this and save them for you, even if they might be “shadows of misty yesteryears” as the song continues.

Being from the newspaper scrapbook era, I wonder how collecting is done nowadays in an era of social media, be it visual or audio? Is everything condensed on a small disk?

Even though they are old and yellowed, give me newspaper articles and photos in a scrapbook that is falling apart. Opening those historical treasures in the basement of the Hess

house brought me back to the 1950s and ’60s.

Wouldn’t it be neat to have a central clearinghouse in Ogle County for old high school sports mementos to have a final resting spot. Your family may not want your memories, but there probably are enough sentimental sports nerds who would enjoy perusing them.

A touchy question that many schools grapple with is what to do with old trophies and awards. There comes a point when a school runs out of space for everything it has accumulated.

Because of that, things have to go and often unceremoniously. The decades move on and that sectional trophy that seemed such a big deal in the 1960s might reside in a dusty basement storeroom.

Or there is the case of schools that close, co-op or consolidate. Often items don’t even find a home and are discarded.

But, as Paul Anka crooned, “Memories are only time that you borrowed.”

Shaw Local News Network correspondent POLO – A back-and-forth first half gave way to a decisive surge by Ashton-Franklin Center on Jan. 3 with the Raiders picking up a 38-27 NUIC South road win over Polo.

AFC scored 11 straight points in the final two minutes of the first half and opening four minutes of the second half to build a 29-15 lead and nabbed 10 steals while forcing 16 Polo turnovers in the second half to maintain its margin.

“It’s amazing for us to win on the road,” AFC junior guard Cameryn Winterland said. “We knew it was going to be tough – we haven’t won at Polo in quite a while – and we were locked in from the beginning and we were really focused and I think that really helped us. It was a really good win.”

AFC scored the first 12 points of the game.

The Marcos (7-9, 1-2) scored the next 13 points to take the lead early in the second quarter.

Senior forward Brianna Gonnerman scored nine points for the Raiders

in their initial run as they held Polo without a point for the first 5:04 of the game.

The Marcos picked up their defense and found some rhythm on offense.

Sophomore point guard Camrynn Jones capped the 13-0 spurt with a three-point play to end the first quarter and a 3-pointer to open the second for a 13-12 lead with 6:23 left in the opening half.

Winterland followed with two of her three 3s for AFC, pushing the margin back to 18-13.

Carlee Grobe hit a pair of free throws after being fouled while shooting a 3 and it was 18-15 with 2:34 left in the first half.

That’s when the Raiders started to roll. Gonnerman went coast to coast for a layup after a Winterland steal and then hit an elbow jumper in rhythm for a 22-15 halftime lead. After the break, AFC picked up where it left off as Alexis Schwarz had a three-point play and a drive to the hoop and Gonnerman went the length of the court off her own steal for a 29-15 lead with 4:38 left in the period.

Shaw Local News Network correspondent POLO – Still hampered by injury and watching match counts for key wrestlers, Oregon sent a makeshift lineup to the Polo tournament Jan. 6 and the Hawks still managed a third-place finish.

Oregon was in contention for the title at the start of the semifinals with seven wrestlers in the round, but the Hawks came out sluggish after the break.

Only 215-pounder Landen Elder advanced to the final. 126-pounder Preston LaBay was the only winner in the round of four on the consolation side.

Elder was defeated in the championship match. LaBay won 4-2 in the medal match to take fifth place.

Finishing third for Oregon were Landen Ege at 113, Ethan Mowry at 150, Andrew Young at 175 and Quentin Berry at 190. Jayden Berry at 138 and Leyton Kenney at 157 finished fourth.

Team champion Richmond-Burton won six of its semifinal matches and crowned three champs. It had a third place, a fourth and two fifth-place medals to run away with the title with 200 points.

Second-place Freeport had 160 points with two champions and two third places among its nine medalists. Oregon was a distant third with 128 points. Lisle had 112 points and Erie-Prophetstown was fifth with 107 points.

Ege pinned with a half nelson in his opener. LaBay scraped for a pin in 29 seconds. Mowry needed a takedown with 12 seconds left to tie the score and force overtime. He won 10-8. Elder had a driving takedown and a half nelson at 1:07. At 285, Maxx George went to his back at 1:21, the only loss for Oregon in the round. Colton Flaharty at 120, Miles Ole-

son at 126, Jayden Berry, Kenney, Young and Quentin Berry all got byes.

In the quarterfinals, Flaharty came close but dropped a 16-13 decision. LaBay took a 17-4 major decision loss. Olsen was pinned in a butcher at 3:07. All got byes to the consolation semifinals.

Jayden Berry drove a half nelson at 1:32. Mowry made a second-period takedown stand for a 2-1 win. Kenney reversed off his back and pinned at 3:33.

Young scored a takedown in a cradle in 50 seconds. Quentin Berry stacked over the front for a quick pin. Elder came from behind with a half nelson at 2:34.

All advanced to the semifinals.

In consolation, George scored a takedown to the back in seven seconds to advance, but he was eliminated in the next round when he was pulled back in a chicken wing in 31 seconds.

In the consolation semifinals, Flaharty was pinned in an outside cradle at 3:32 to be eliminated. Olsen also went out when he was taken down in a headlock in 22 seconds. LaBay advanced to the medal match with a stack in 42 seconds.

On the championship side, the Hawks were faltering. Ege went over in a cradle at 1:44. Jayden Berry got pinned in a half nelson at 2:53. Mowry was pinned in a cradle at 4:55. Kenney was pinned in a butcher at 1:39. Young was turned in a cradle at 3:13. Quentin Berry gave up three takedowns in an 8-5 loss. Elder was the bright spot, finding a throw in 54 seconds.

In the medal match, Elder was turned in a half nelson and pinned at 1:40 to take second.

The Hawks were tough on the thirdplace mat. Ege scored a takedown to the back at 2:14. Mowry came from behind and held on for an 11-8 win. Young ran a

half nelson at 1:55. Quentin Berry fought off a throw to pin in 31 seconds.

In their third-place matches, Jayden Berry was pinned in a half nelson at 3:58 and Kenney was pinned in a half nelson

at 3:40. On the fifth-place mat, LaBay had a tilt for three points and held on for a 4-2 win to earn his medal.

Oregon was led by Matthew Stahl with a 658 series (227, 247, 184), followed by Brady Davis with a 627, Gavvin Surmo with a 604, RJ Keene with a 579, Caleb Ehrler with a 528 and Codey Dunbar with a 497.

Oregon takes third: The Hawks were at the Belvidere Invitational at The Cherry Bowl on Jan. 6. The 19-school field consisted of the majority of teams that will be participating in the Freeport and Belvidere regionals Saturday, Jan. 13.

Oregon came away with a third-place finish on the varsity level with a score of 5,938. Leading the way for the Hawks was junior Gavvin Surmo with a 1,347 series (237, 211, 235, 201, 247, 216) good for a fourth-place individual finish. Also finishing in the top 10 was sophomore RJ Keene with a 1,260 series and eighth-place finish. Matthew Stahl recorded an 1,133 series, Codey Dunbar an 1,101 series and Brady Davis a 1n097 series.

On the JV level, Aiden Currier was the tournament champion with an 1,188 series (182, 177, 171, 235, 210, 213). Isaac Kramer finished in 18th place with a 964 series, Zakk West had a 614 series (four games), Landon Bailey a 486 series (three games), Ivan Hernandez a 437 series (three games) and Immanuel Arrellano a 435 series (three games).

The Hawks finished fifth as a team with a score of 4,824.

Currier participated in the JV “King Of the Hill” strike competition after the tournament and was the champion of that event.

“I think a lot of players stepped up for us. Their defense, it was tough to get shots up on them; they’re a very good team,” Jones said. “Our energy was up, the effort was there, the execution just wasn’t. We were trying our best, doing what we could, but shots weren’t really falling for us and we

“Our main goal was to play tough defense. We knew they were going to score some baskets on us. There was no stopping that – they have a ton of good players and are well-coached – but we also knew we needed to keep up our defense to win the game because we weren’t really scoring on offense,” Jones said. “The defense was definitely a strong point this game. The last two days at practice we’ve been all in, the

aggressiveness has been there, pushing each other to play our best defense. The effort was definitely there tonight.”

AFC turned up its own defense down the stretch, limiting Polo to a basket by Elsa Monaco and two free throws by Grobe over the final seven minutes to seal the win. Despite finishing the game 5 for 23 from the free-throw line – including 3 for 13 in the fourth quarter – the Raiders made enough plays on both ends to pull out the victory.

Gonnerman led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds, six steals and two assists for AFC. Winterland added 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Schwarz stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, eight rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block and Taylor Jahn finished with four points, three

steals and two assists. Reese Polk nabbed five steals and Audree Dorn chipped in four steals for the Raiders.

Jones and Grobe each had eight points, three rebounds and an assist for Polo, with Grobe adding two steals and two blocks. Glawe finished with five points and four rebounds and Sydney Rahn chipped in four points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. While hitting 11 of their 14 free throws and forcing 13 AFC turnovers, the Marcos shot just 7 for 30 from the field and turned the ball over 33 times.

“It’s hard to win when you have more turnovers than points,” Polo coach Jason Grobe said. “The effort was there. We just turned the ball over too much and couldn’t get going on offense.”

Nelson started with a bye and pinned with a butcher at 1:06 in the quarterfinal. He held on for a 7-5 win in the semifinals to defeat the top seed. In the first-place match, Nelson couldn’t get on track, giving up six takedowns in a 15-9 loss.

Mullen started with a bye and then pinned at 4:56 to reach the semifinal where he had two sets of backpoints before he pinned with a half nelson at 1:05. He lost 7-0 in the final to Dane Sorenson of Richmond-Burton.

Bremmer started with a bye and a first-period pin but lost a hard-fought 7-6 decision in the semifinal and dropped to the third-place match where he finished a 21-6 technical fall with a takedown to the back at the third-period buzzer.

McKinney pinned to reach the semifinal where he lost by a pin. In

the third-place match, he lost 5-0.

Zier took a 10-7 decision in the quarterfinal but lost a late escape and takedown to drop a 6-5 decision in the semifinal. In the third-place match, he had the first takedown but gave up backpoints in the third to lose 11-8.

Meiners was pinned in his opener, pinned Heyden with a half nelson in consolation, pinned again to reach the fifth-place mat where he lost a takedown in a headlock.

McCarren had three sets of backpoints to take a 15-3 major decision in his first match and was reversed to

his back at 3:33 in the quarterfinal. He pinned Dewey in consolation and won 9-7 to reach the fifth-place mat where he was on his back in a cradle in the first period of a 10-5 loss.

Heyden lost his opener and was eliminated by Meiners in consolation.

Lagee started with a half nelson at 5:04 but was pinned in the first period in the next round and pinned in 54 seconds in the consolation semifinal.

Dewey was pinned in a cradle in his opener and knocked out on a pin by McCarren. Simons lost both of his matches by falls.

At 9:05 a.m., Vincent D. Castillo, 22, of Oregon, was issued a citation for speeding 62 mph in a 40-mph zone.

The violation occurred in the 100 block of East Washington Street.

At 11:29 a.m. while conducting a traffic stop, police issued a passenger of the vehicle, a 17-year-old male juvenile of Hazel Crest, a civil citation for possession of cannabis not more than 10 grams. The violation occurred in the 300 block of West Washington Street. There were no other citations issued.

At 12:30 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot of the McDonald’s restaurant, 211 S. Fourth St., involving a 2009 Chevrolet pickup driven by Connie S. Mongan, 70, of Mt. Morris, that struck a parked 2007 Chevrolet belonging to Misty J. Berry, 47, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

At 9:10 a.m., deputies responded to the 11000 block of East Big Mound Road for a single-vehicle crash. An investigation showed Kenneth C. Baie, 18, of Sycamore, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer west on East Big Mound Road when he lost control of the vehicle on the ice-covered road. The vehicle spun sideways before entering the south ditch and overturning multiple times.

Baie was uninjured. No citations were issued. The Stillman Valley Fire Protection District and EMS assisted at the scene.

Brandon M. Taylor, 26, of Byron, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 100 block of North Union Street in Byron about 11:38 p.m. Taylor also was cited for operating a second-division vehicle without splash guards. Ricky Logan, 20, of Martinsville, Indiana, was arrested for an active Lee County contempt of court traffic warrant after a traffic stop near the intersection of Rock and Mud Creek roads about 1:05 p.m. He was taken to the Ogle County jail and held in lieu of bond.

Cameron Olson, 26, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for an equipment violation on a gold Chevrolet Malibu about 5:30 p.m. Olson also was cited for driving while license suspended, no insurance and having an inoperable taillight. Olson was released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

Cynthia Wiles, 66, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. About 11:26 p.m., deputies received a citizen complaint regarding a possibly intoxicated driver in the area of Pecatonica and Egan roads. Deputies initially were unable to find the driver, but found and arrested Wiles several hours later. Wiles was taken to the Ogle County jail and released on a notice to appear.

Joseph Al Hayawi, 20, of Rochelle, was arrested for an active Stephenson County failure to appear traffic warrant after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Meridian Road about 1:31 p.m. He was taken to the Ogle County jail and held in lieu of bond.

Curtis Palmer, 42, of Leaf River, was arrested for aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery after deputies responded to a reported physical domestic in the 400 block of Davis Drive in Leaf River about 8:08 p.m. Palmer was taken to the Ogle County jail and held pending a court appearance.

RESOLUTION NO. 2024-01 A RESOLUTION PROVIDING FOR THE LEVY AND ASSESSMENT OF A BUILDING MAINTENANCE TAX FOR FORRESTON PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR THE FISCAL YEAR BEGINNING MAY 1, 2024, AND ENDING APRIL 30, 2025 WHEREAS, 75 ILCS 5/3-4 authorizes the Board of Trustees of the Village of Forreston (the “Village Board”) to levy an additional tax for the purchase of sites and buildings, for the rental of buildings required for library purposes, and for maintenance, repairs, and alterations of library buildings and equipment; and WHEREAS, the Village Board has determined that the levy of the aforesaid tax is necessary to carry out the purposes of maintaining the Forreston Public Library.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Trustees of the Village of Forreston that there shall be levied an additional tax of .02% of the value of all taxable property within the Village of Forreston, pursuant to authority under 75 ILCS 5/3-4, for the purchase of sites and buildings, for the construction and equipment of buildings, for the rental of buildings required for library purposes, and for maintenance, repairs and alterations of library buildings and equipment; provided, that the same shall be subject to the right of electors of the Village of Forreston constituting 10% or more of the total number of registered voters in the Village of Forreston to ask by petition that the question of levying such tax be submitted to the electors of the Village of Forreston at the general election to be held November 5, 2024.

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice of Proposed Change in Schedule of Rates to Customers of Aqua Illinois, Inc. Dear Aqua Illinois Customer: Aqua Illinois, Inc. hereby gives notice to the public that it has filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) a proposed change in its rate schedules for water and wastewater service in certain areas of Kankakee, Vermilion, Will, Boone, Knox, Lake, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Ogle, Winnebago, McHenry, and Champaign counties.

AQUA ILLINOIS' RATE REQUEST If this rate request is granted, in full as filed, an average combined monthly residential wastewater and water bill (4,000 gallons) would increase by $29.91 ($1.00 per day) to $152.87. The estimated bill impact may vary based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, meter size, usage volume, and public fire protection charges. The bill impact also will depend upon the nature of the service received and will differ for those customers taking wastewater service only, water service only, or wastewater service on a flat rate charge instead of a usage-based charge. The proposed changes in wastewater rates are set out in Tariff ILL. C.C. No. 50, Section 6 filed with the ICC and the proposed changes in water rates are set out in Tariff ILL. C.C. No. 49, Section 8 filed with the ICC. The last rate case impacting Aqua Illinois, Inc. customers was filed on May 1, 2017. This request will undergo a review by the ICC for up to 11 months. The approximate date of the change(s), if approved by the ICC within the statutory 11-month process, is December 2, 2024. However, the effective date of any change(s) approved by the ICC will differ for those systems that may not be subject to full consolidated rates as of that date in accordance with the terms and conditions of certain Asset Purchase Agreements approved by the ICC. If the request is approved by the ICC, the changes for all classes of water and wastewater service statewide would result in an increase to base rates of $19,196,140.

Depending upon the nature of services provided in your community, examples may include: Wastewater • Wastewater treatment plant improvement projects to replace aging and deteriorating equipment, which will prevent service interruptions and improve operational efficiency • Lift station replacement projects to replace undersized and/or aged equipment to reduce and minimize service interruptions and backups • Infiltration and Inflow reduction projects to extend service life of infrastructure and reduce costs associated with treatment • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) projects to replace obsolescent data collection and historian equipment to increase service reliability and operational effectiveness Water • Water treatment plant additions to improve water quality, increase capacity and reliability, and accommodate industrial growth • Improvement of well pumps and equipment to increase reliability and sustainability • Replacement of aged water meters to improve accuracy of water usage data and reduce non-revenue water • New and replaced fire hydrants to improve fire protection and water quality due to additional flushing capability • Replacement of aging and deteriorating water mains to improve water quality, pressure, service reliability, and fire protection services • Construction of water main emergency interconnects for system reliability • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) projects to replace obsolescent data collection and historian equipment to increase service reliability and operational effectiveness For customers other than single-family residential customers receiving water and wastewater service from Aqua Illinois, an option exists to install a separate irrigation meter to mitigate volumetric wastewater charges on irrigation and other outdoor uses. Aqua Illinois will provide the irrigation meter; however, customers are responsible for any applicable charges, such as plumbing necessary to accommodate the irrigation meter, proper backflow prevention, and monthly customer charges.

For single-family residential customers receiving water and wastewater service from Aqua Illinois, summer wastewater usage charges generally are based on the average water usage in winter months, a period in which outdoor watering activities are minimized. This methodology for calculating wastewater usage charges is known as historical based consumption and is detailed further in the Company's Tariff.

ICC ROLE Please be advised that the ICC may alter or amend the rates or conditions of service after hearings held pursuant to 83 Ill. Adm. Code 200, and may increase or decrease individual rates in amounts other than those requested by the company.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE Any interested party may file a petition to intervene in the hearings pursuant to 83 Ill. Adm. Code 200.

Pursuant to Section 8-306 of the Public Utilities Act, 220 ILCS 5/8-306, customers may request that the ICC hold a public hearing related to the company's rate request.
