I started this past week in Hawaii with Matt. On Monday afternoon, Matt and I went to visit the Pearl Harbor exhibit.

Unfortunately, there was a very large crowd of people trying to visit the area. We decided to leave and take in other sites.

We drove to Honolulu for lunch and then took a drive to see the coastline. Matt showed me many of the places he has visited, including some of the hills he has hiked. Along the highway were beaches on one side and mountains on the other.

On Tuesday, I packed my things for my return trip home. Matt will be moving to North Carolina in a couple of months and is hoping to make a stop at home during that time. I really enjoyed getting to spend some quality time with him.

This evening, I went over to my brother Ben Bittinger’s home for dinner with his wife, Jo, and their sons, Hayden and Garrett. After dinner, we played a couple of games and visited. Hayden and Garrett will be returning to school very soon.

For New Year’s Eve, I spent the evening at home. I stayed up until midnight to wel-

come the new year. One thought kept entering my mind. The past year went by so very fast. It’s hard to believe how far I have come. I started 2021 filled with lots of uncertainty.

Every step of the way, God was with me.

Together, we moved through the many ups and downs of life. Like a speeding roller coaster, each day has turned into a blur.

With so many twists and turns, I know that I needed God to help me along the way.

His love and comfort are strong enough to help me get through anything. I can face the unknown of this New Year because I know that God continues to be with me.

Now is a great time to get to know this loving Father.

My return home from Hawaii came just in time to see the snow. Our God has made a beautiful world from beaches and clear waters to the pure white covering over the fields of Pine Creek. For His wonderful world, we are truly thankful.

This morning for church, we met on Facebook Live. Pastor Suzanne Hall-Stout led the service. Chuck Kearns, accompanied by his wife, Bev, provided special music for the service. We will meet online for one more week and plan to be in person starting Jan. 16.

Last Sunday, Deb and Phil Ohlwine hosted their family Christmas gathering.

The family gathered for dinner and activities in the afternoon. Some family members were missed. Many memories were made during the celebration.

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – Forreston’s Hometown Sauerkraut Days got a $5,000 boost from the Forreston Village Board Monday night.

Trustees unanimously approved a Business Development District reimbursement to the annual event, held in August.

Trustee Monty Cotter, who proposed the reimbursement to the village board, said the reimbursement will hopefully enable festival organizers to afford better bands, more food trucks, fireworks, games, etc., which would then draw more of a crowd to town and help all local businesses.

“I don’t see anything why we can’t take $5,000 every January, give to the Hometown Days,” he said. “It’s basically bettering the district. All businesses will benefit from having a bigger activity to bring more people into town.”

Event organizers are expected to keep track of what the BDD money is used for and report it to the village, Cotter said.

BDDs provide municipalities with the means to redevelop and revitalize commercial and industrial areas, according to Forreston’s BDD development plan from July 2017.

The BDD is funded by sales tax from businesses within the district, Cotter said. Currently, it’s bringing in between $7,000 and $8,000 a month.

“It’s growing a lot more than what I ever thought it would,” he said.

Village President Mark Metzger agreed, noting that BDDs were an “unknown” until officials began working on forming one in Forreston. So far, it’s been a wonderful resource and the village has “helped quite a few places,” he said.

The fund also assists the village in covering costs for things such as fixing sidewalks and has allowed them to save for street curb costs if Illinois Routes 26 and 72 are redone, Metzger said.

“I think it’s been a great program and I think this is a nice way of giving back to the community,” Metzger said.

Partial waiver on $2M grant requirement sought Colden Street Project aims to alleviate water buildup on Illinois Route 26 with storm sewer improvements; cost $3.1 million

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO – The main contractor for a storm sewer improvement project in Polo reached out to more than 100 companies in an effort to comply with a grant requirement, but was unable to secure the minimum level called for by the state.

The $3.1 million Colden Street Project encompasses about 10.5 blocks, both in the downtown business district and in residential neighborhoods. It is meant to help alleviate water buildup on Illinois Route 26 – named Division Avenue in Polo city limits – during torrential rain events.

“Route 26 gets absolutely dangerous when it rains,” Mayor Doug Knapp said. “The water has nowhere to go and cars hydroplane.”

Storm sewers and catch basins are planned to be added or expanded along parts of South Maple Avenue, West Buffalo Street, South Congress Avenue, Colden Street, West Mason Street and halfway into the east alley between Mason and Locus streets, Public Works Director Kendall Kyker said.

Much of the project is meant to be funded by two state grants – a $2 million Fast-Track Public Infrastructure grant from August 2020 and a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for public infrastructure from January 2019. It leaves the city directly responsible for $628,950.01, for which Polo City Council members have approved issuance of general obligation bonds.

The FTPI grant requires recipients to make a “good faith effort” to award at least 25% of a project to Business Enterprise Program certified companies.

According to the Illinois Department of Control Management Services, which oversees the BEP, certification requires a business to have at least 51% ownership by a minority, woman or person with a disability; be at least 51% controlled by one or more minority groups, women or people with disabilities; be owned by a U.S. citizen or U.S. foreign national; and have annual gross sales of less than $75 million.

“We just don’t have any companies that are in our area that conform to that,” Knapp said.

Ogle County’s population is 51,778, of which about 86% are “white alone,” according to the 2020 census.

The American Community Survey’s five-year estimate cites roughly 6,551 people in the county as having a disability, only 18.5% of whom are between ages 18 and 64. The ACS is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The CMS website states that a “good faith effort” means taking “all necessary and reasonable steps to achieve the BEP Goal(s), which … could reasonably be expected to obtain sufficient BEP participation, even if those steps were not fully successful.”

Project, Alderperson Randy Schoon said. Martin & Company has records of names to whom they reached out, and dates and times they did so, he said.

Most of those approached weren’t interested because the project is too far away, or is out of their scope, Schoon said.

The three companies that joined the Colden Street Project brings Polo to abut 15% of the 25% BEP allocation required, Knapp said. The city now must hope the state agrees to waive the requirement based on their efforts, he said.

“The writer of the contract … says if we send this [documentation of Martin & Company’s efforts to the state] and it doesn’t get waived, they probably would never waiver anything,” Knapp said.

Polo City Council members on Dec. 20 voted 5-0 to send a BEP waiver request to the state; Alderperson D.J. Sanders was absent. At the same time, they OK’d a $42,332.16 increase in the total project cost associated with hiring the three interested BEP companies.

“You’re never going to convince me this is right.

Never,” Schoon said. “It’s wrong. There’s no reason it should cost us more because we gotta use minority people.”

Schoon said that while he understands the state’s push to hire businesses with underrepresented owners, the actual practice doesn’t work in smaller communities the way it does in places such as Chicago.

He also pointed out that construction has yet to begin, and it’s a virtual certainty that additional costs will pop up along the way.

Knapp and Alderpersons Jim Busser and Beth Sundman said they agree, but don’t see an option other than to accept the additional cost for a chance at having the BEP waiver approved.

If it’s not granted, the scope of the project will have to be reduced, Knapp said.

“We either have to bite the bullet and waste more money, or we don’t get anything done and we have safety issues,” Kyker said.

Chief Jason White planning on retiring in March

azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS – Applications for the position of Mt. Morris police chief are due Jan. 7.

Police Chief Jason White is seeking to retire around March, Village President Phil Labash said at previous Mt. Morris Village Board meetings. Labash said White has expressed a willingness to adjust his retirement date should the village’s search for a replacement take longer than expected.

“The goal is to begin interviewing candidates mid-January to the first of February,” Labash said in a phone interview Monday. “Then we think we’ll probably get into final interviews mid-February with a goal to hire around March 1.”

More than 25 applications have been submitted as of Monday afternoon, he said.

The Mt. Morris Police Department currently has three full-time officers and the village is in the process of hiring a fourth, Labash said. The department also uses part-time officers, the exact number of which fluctuates.

Law Enforcement Trustee Chris Kolling said he’d love to find someone as near to White as possible —

an individual who understands the Mt. Morris community, its people and “the way things are.”

“Someone who already understands that, or who is willing to understand that, because it seems like a real good fit,” Kolling said.

The successful candidate will have skills and experience that allow them to operate as a collaborative government professional responsible for overseeing and directing a full-service police department, according to an ad in the Mt. Morris Times.

“Applicants should be energetic, approachable, and possess strong communication and problem-solving skills,” the ad states.

The minimum qualifications include a high school diploma, five years of experience in law enforcement and certification as an Illinois police officer or the ability to obtain a waiver from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard Board, according to the ad.

Also required is residency within three miles of Mt. Morris village limits.

Post-secondary education in law enforcement, criminal science or related fields is a plus, as is prior leadership and supervisory experience, the ad states.

Strong consideration will be given to individuals who have completed additional administrative and command training.

Rare maps are on display at Polo historical museum

T

he next meeting date of the Polo Historical Society will not be in February for several

reasons.

First, the virus is rampant again and we need to settle back down after all our gatherings over the holidays. I have heard the predictions that eventually all of us will get this maddening virus that keeps changing and I am beginning to believe that might possibly be true.

Second, the month of February comes in quickly with our meeting date being right away. No one really looked at the calendar and the majority of those who run the meetings will be gone.

Many times in the past we have had to call off the February meeting due to bad weather. We have been very lucky in our weather this year during the month of December and I think now

The middle of January I am to have knee replacement surgery and I do not plan on being out and about for a while following all of that. I have never had the virus and I do not want to run into it now.

I had shingles and that was enough for me. I have been told that having knee replacement “at my age” is not easy.

I loved the statement in the newspaper about Betty White who died recently. It said, “She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old

enough.” What a great review of her life and I am certain she never felt like an aged person at any age let alone at 99. I know the feeling!

So with the virus and people being gone, we started in attempting to find another date. Our speaker was then gone for a while and that brought us to the month of March. The first Wednesday of March is Ash Wednesday and that is not a good date so we moved to Wednesday March 9. That seemed to work.

By that time, hopefully, the bad part of winter will be over and we will be thinking spring. The virus maybe will be on the downward slide, my surgery will be a thing of the past, the Christmas decorations will all have been put away, and we can focus on what needs to be done at Polo Historical Society.

program, and myself met at the museum so Kevin could take pictures of our 1864 map. It is the only map that exists of that year. It is a big one on the wall and Kevin took pictures of each county. This should be something interesting for others to have if the pictures turn out.

We are fortunate to have some rare maps in the museum that others need to have in their collections so this 1864 map can be added to that list. We are starting to share information with other historical societies.

So put into your calendar Wednesday, March 9, for our next meeting as we find out about Barber Park and what has been covered up in the earth for many years.

READING MATTERS

All ages still need to read well and think critically

A

s we begin a new year, we tend to look for ways we would like to improve our health and our lives in general.

While it may not be at the top of our lists, reading more may be something that we can all add to our new year’s resolutions. For this month, we will explore suggestions for how we can support our children and grandchildren in working toward the goal of reading more.

There are two main reasons to read that apply to all ages and all stages of learning to read.

One is to read for entertainment and enjoyment. The other is to read for information. We should emphasize both reasons, even for beginning readers.

We do need to broaden our definition of texts beyond books. We can and should read a variety of texts that include books, magazines, websites, electronic games and social media such as Twitter or Instagram.

In today’s world, technology and the internet dominate the world of

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner entertainment. We can play games, watch movies or view TV shows, and listen to music on multiple devices just about anywhere.

However, we can still model how we also read a variety of texts to read for enjoyment. Do you have a favorite magazine that you read online or in print? Are there blogs you check regularly?

Share some of that with your children and grandchildren. You might discuss reading for enjoyment and encourage them to discover the ways they read for enjoyment.

Of course, there are plenty of poems and various kinds of fiction that make us laugh or cry.

Well-written stories are powerful entertainment. We especially want

our youngest readers to understand that one of the reasons we want to learn to read is because of the enjoyment it brings.

Technology and the internet also compete for our attention in the area of reading to learn.

We can watch a video on YouTube or Pinterest to learn how to do just about anything from playing the guitar to changing a tire.

Many of us benefit from the addition of these visuals to any kind of directions.

Again, we can still model how we read a variety of texts to learn something.

Perhaps you subscribe to magazines that help you learn a skill or that keep you informed about your favorite hobbies. Consider the world of cooking and baking. We read recipes and follow those instructions step by step, but we may also read blogs by our favorite chefs.

We want to show our children and grandchildren that reading to learn is something they will want to be able to

do for their whole life.

I have had conversations with parents who are concerned because their children (of all ages) do not read anymore. I ask them to consider the variety of texts that their children might read daily.

It may not be books, but they do read texts of some kind.

We can demonstrate authentic purposes for reading, the real reasons we read, and the variety of texts that count as reading.

In doing so, we are also showing the importance of being able to read well.

Even with technology, or perhaps even more so, all ages need to be able to read and think critically about the information we receive.

All of this will help our children and grandchildren have a more positive attitude toward reading.

Oregon Rotary Club Foundation awarded scholarships to six exceptional college students: Bailey Montavon, Ellie Egyed, Alyssa Theisen, Lauren Montavon, Breanna DeHaan and Chloe Klien.

“These students are the applicants whom the board agreed best represent the ideals of Rotary International this year,” said Hollie J. Guist, Rotary president. “Bailey Montavon has been given the additional distinction of being named as the 2021 recipient of the Helen and Andrew Cirksena Scholarship.”

The annual Oregon Rotary Club Foundation scholarship program began in 1984, thanks to the Cirksena family’s generous donation to the club. The club awarded one $500 college scholarship that first year.

Foundation members nurtured the scholarship program and it continued to develop. In 2014, the program expanded to include graduating high school seniors after a generous donation from Catherine Ehnen.

“Over the course of these 37 years, the program has awarded over

$350,000 to more than 200 students who best manifested the ideals of Rotary International,” Guist said.

“The yearly decision process is a very difficult, yet a rewarding, experience because of the large number of outstanding applicants that apply each year. The Oregon community should be very proud of these individuals who are not only excellent students but participate in activities geared toward helping others as well.”

Guist said the Oregon Rotary Club Foundation appreciates the many applicants to the scholarship program.

“Our district is fortunate to have

so many scholars of distinction. The board members would like to thank all the students for taking the time to apply and for sharing their talents and leadership in our community.” Guist said. “Their hope is that these financial awards will help the students pursue their college education and enable them to continue to support our fine community. A separate scholarship opportunity will be given to graduating OHS seniors in the spring.”

Rotary is a service club whose mission is serving. Rotarians provide community service, both locally and internationally. Becoming a Rotarian provides the opportunity to do something for someone else and to sense the highly rewarding self-fulfillment that comes with the process.

The First Fridays Open Mic has moved to K’s Sports Bar, 408 E. Washington (Route 64) in Oregon. Organizers are excited about the new location, which offers an intimate, coffee-house style atmosphere and is close to several restaurants.

“First Fridays presents many talented performers, but the atmosphere is warm and accepting for musicians and singers of all skill levels,” organizer Lowell Harp said.

“Each performer is allowed 15 minutes. Everyone can also join in on a jam session at the end of the show, if they wish to.”

Healing Your Heart” by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, this group is designed to help individuals along their grief journeys by connecting them with a supportive community and providing helpful resources.

COVID-19 booster clinic Jan. 15

An Oregon business will be offering a booster clinic on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Locus, which is celebrating one year in business, is partnering with the Illinois Department of Public Health to host a free COVID-19 booster vaccination clinic at Locus in downtown Oregon from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Locus founder and owner Elizabeth Priller is a 21-year registered nurse, registered yoga teacher and corporate wellness/DEI consultant.

Recycle holiday lights

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department is again partnering with local fire departments and villages to offer several convenient drop-off boxes so those frustrating, nonfunctional holiday light strands can be recycled.

Drop-off boxes are available at the following fire departments: Rochelle, Byron, Stillman Valley and Mt. Morris.

Drop-off boxes also will be located at the village halls in Polo, Forreston, and Davis Junction, and Creston.

Light strands are also accepted at the Ogle County courthouse and at the OCSWMD office at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. Boxes will remain at these locations until Jan. 21.

Accepted light strands include Italian mini-lights, traditional lights, LED lights, and other holiday light strands. Extension cords are also accepted.

Material not accepted includes rope lights, wreaths, garland, metal stakes or silhouettes, live greens, plastic decorations, timers, and light packaging, plastic bags or cardboard boxes.

Placing just the light strands and cords into the bins increases material value and makes the recycling process more efficient for the processor.

Lights and cords will be shipped to Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations in Onalaska, Wisconsin to be recycled.

In 2020-2021, more than 1,500 pounds of material was collected and recycled through this program.

The Hawks were led by Stylar Klapp with a 608 series (176, 233, 199). Klapp was followed closely by Brady Davis (600 series), Roberto Hernandez (592 series), Isaac Kaltenbrun (550 series), Brando Rowe (531 series) and Gavvin Surmo (479 series).

The JV raised its record to 15-0 and was led by Bryan Immel with a 543 series.

Oregon wrestlers do well at Abe’s Rumble tournament

The Hawks wrestling team returned to full strength just in time to travel to Springfield for the Abe’s Rumble Dual Team Tournament.

Fifty-eight of the top wrestling teams in Illinois were there to compete and Oregon made it to the championship quarterfinals and finished seventh, the Hawks’ best performance ever in the grueling two-day tournament.

Oregon went undefeated on Dec. 29, winning Pool E and defeating Westville 48-34 in the 32-team bracket to get to the top 16 Gold Bracket.

The Hawks held on to defeat ReedCuster 40-38 in the first round to get to the round of eight. The quarterfinals were a “who’s who” of Illinois wrestling and the competition stiffened.

Oregon fought hard but gave up seven pins and a major decision to lose 49-24 to top-ranked Tremont. Tremont lost to second-place Coal City in the semifinal and defeated Vandalia for third place. Lena-Winslow-Stockton took the championship.

The loss dropped Oregon to the 5-8th consolation bracket where it met sixth-ranked Tolono Unity in the semifinal. Unity scored six falls and added two major decisions to send Oregon to the seventh-place match after a 50-24 Unity win.

Unity defeated El Paso-Gridley for fifth place. The Hawks faced Seneca in the medal match.

After nine matches of trading sixpoint wins, Oregon was down 30-24 and Seneca won two decisions to extend the lead to 12, but the Hawks finished with two pins and a forfeit to win 42-36.

Coach Justin Lahman was delighted with the performance of his team. “We sent a message that we are a team on the rise,” he said. “This was truly a team effort, and everybody contributed. We were having fun.”

Lahman said that the experience of being there was great for the team.

“We finished strong, and it was great to watch the young guys step it up. We improved immensely as the tournament went on.”

The Hawks swept through Pool E, defeating Shelbyville 42-29, Olympia 48-36, Roxanna 54-27, and pinned five times in a 51-25 win over Fithian-Oakwood on Wednesday morning.

The Hawks were led by Lane Halvorson and Ethan George, both 8-1 for the tournament. Lane won six by falls and Ethan pinned five times.

Anthony Bauer, 7-1 for the tournament, led the team in pins, winning all

seven by falls.

Gabe Eckerd also won seven with six pins and a major decision, losing just two matches. Seth Stevens went 6-3 with four pins and an injury default.

Evan Flaharty went 5-3, pinning four times and adding a forfeit. Preston LeBay went 5-4 in the tournament and had two pins and two forfeits.

Andrew Young went 4-4, all his wins by pins. Griffin Marlatt scored one fall in his four wins.

Dalton McCammon pinned in his only match. Also adding a fall to the total were Ethan Mowry, Collin Winterland, Jared Glendenning, Jackson Glendenning and Jonathon Alaniz.

Seth Rote contributed two forfeits and Alex George and Briggs Sellers added one each. Also representing the Hawks were Elizabeth Ruter, Landen Elder, Elijah George and Josh Batt.

Kaltenbrun record the tournament’s two highest games, 288 and 277, en route to a 967 four-game series. His 288 game flirted with perfection. He left a wobbling 10 pin on his 11th ball.

Also bowling on the Oregon Red team were Brandon Rowe (733 series), Brady Davis (663 series), Gavvin Surmo (473 series for 3

games), Stylar Klapp (355 series for 2 games), Bryan Immel (340 series for 2 games) and Roberto Hernandez (128, 1 game).

The Oregon Red team finished the event in fifth place with a 5,317 score, only 30 pins out of a third-place medal.

The Oregon White team finished in 10th place and was led by Codey Dunbar with a

640 series, followed by Immanuel Arrellano with a 556 series, Matthew Stahl with a 555 series, Ethan Smice with a 437 series (3 games), Riley Kiesling with a 360 series (3 games) and Isaac Kramer with a 196 series (2 games).

Proactive Coaching website offers list of principles

A

t the last Oregon school board meeting, a basketball parent registered concerns he had with the varsity boys coach.

Among those was use of profanity, degrading comments and fostering a “toxic environment.”

He said his son quit the team rather than be subjected to this and that mental health took preference over a sport he loved.

Without knowing all the details, it is hard to comment on this. Having known the parent as a casual acquaintance, I strongly doubt this is a halfcocked parent on a vendetta.

A school rarely makes a public statement on matters such as these and I have never met the coach myself.

That being the case, it would not be right for me to offer an opinion.

However, I can share some information gleaned from the Proactive Coaching website on principles fol-

The list goes on and on of various quotes that stress what it means to be leader of young people.

One thing that always stood out to me in coaching was not so much telling an athlete what they needed to do, but creating a desire within them to do so. A coach doesn’t have the power to change you, but certainly can be a catalyst for change.

Another desirable feature in a coach is humility. Sports are ego-

driven and it takes a special individual to surrender his or her pride for the betterment of his athletes.

That’s not from some coaching manual either. It’s a spiritual principle and a genuine leader will serve others before themselves.

But in a secular world driven by wins and losses, coaching egos can loom large, not just at the college and pro levels, but in high schools, as well.

Never underestimate the influence a coach can have on a young person, especially those kids without strong parental guidance. It is entirely possible for an athlete to receive more love from a coach than a parent.

Really, isn’t true coaching about love?

Locals named to halls of fame Several local former athletes and current coaches recently were elected to halls of fame in their respective sports.

Rock Falls baseball coach Donnie Chappell was selected as part of the Class of 2022 to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, while Newman assistant coach Tim Nelson was honored as part of the Class of 2022 for the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

Four former area basketball players were elected to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame: the Rock Falls trio of Jorge Acosta, Bryan Boerjan and Brian Vance, along with Forreston’s Jonathan Schneiderman.

Area football players named all-state The Champaign News-Gazette released its 86th All-State Football Team on Christmas Day. Born: September 7, 1947 in Freeport, IL Died: January 1, 2022 in Rockford, IL Darold Lynn Wubbena, 74, of Shannon, died Saturday January 1, 2022 at Alden-Park-Strathmor Nursing Home in Rockford, IL. He was born September 7, 1947 in Freeport, IL, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Artman) Wubbena. Darold farmed in the Shannon, IL area. He served his country in The United States National Guard. He was a member of The Shannon American Legion. He enjoyed going to farm sales, playing cards, driving his truck and semi, having coffee with

friends, and watching high school sports.

Darold is survived by his mother, Dorothy Wubbena of Lena, Il; two daughters, Becky (Ryan) Guentner of Sheboygan Falls, WI and Wendy (Shawn) Bean of Peotone, IL; brother, Wayne (Sandy) Wubbena of Warren, IL; sister, Darlene (Doug) Pauley of Winslow, IL; four grandchildren, Olivia and Jack Guentner and Payton and Kayla Bear; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Gloria Haury of Stockton, IA. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Wubbena. Funeral services will be11:00 A.M. Saturday January 8, 2022 at Forreston Grove Church. Sheriff’s office releases holiday enforcement numbers

Ogle County sheriff’s deputies issued 276 citations including four impaired driving arrests during the recent holiday enforcement effort.

Citations and criminal arrests resulted from numerous offenses including: • Four arrests for driving while under the influence • Two stolen vehicles recovered

• Four felony drug arrests • Four misdemeanor drug arrests • 33 citations to uninsured motorists • 169 citations for speeding and speeding related offenses • 28 citations for drivers with no valid, suspended or

revoked licenses • 3 citations for illegal transportation of alcohol.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this effort to save lives by getting impaired drivers off the roads and more people

Passenger Soha Kahn, 20, of DeKalb, was also arrested for obstructing identification. North and Kahn were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Dec. 30 Joel Newcomer, 61, of Chana, was arrested at 9:56 a.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of South Watertown Road. Newcomer also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol and driving with a suspended registration. He was released on an I-Bond at the scene.

Ashley Paddie, 30, of Dixon, was arrested at 12:28 p.m. for driving on a suspended license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Illinois Route 64 for a speeding violation. Paddie also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding. Paddie was released on a signature I-Bond with a return court date.

Deputies were dispatched to a driving complaint northbound on Illinois Route 2 from Mud Creek Road at 6:21 p.m. The vehicle eventually was located at Casey’s at 700 West Blackhawk Dr. in Byron. After an investigation, Carl C. Hightower, 25, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license and improper container of cannabis/ driver. Hightower also was issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Hightower was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Elizabeth Dray, 26, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:29 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile-marker 104.

Dray also was cited for no insurance. Dray was released at the scene and will appear in court at a later date.

Ashlee Parisi, 31, of Oregon, was arrested at 9:21 p.m. for two counts of possession of a controlled substance (crack/cocaine and Adderall) and possession of drug equipment after deputies conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of East Washington Street (Illinois 64) and River Road. Parisi also was issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, expired registration and two equipment violations. Parisi was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Dec. 31 Elexus Soto, 27, of Rochelle, was cited for speeding and fleeing to elude a police officer after deputies attempted to stop Soto on Interstate 88 for speeding at 109 mph. Soto fled from deputies north on Interstate 39 and then west on Illinois Route 38. Soto’s vehicle was stopped near the Dement Road intersection after it was disabled as a result of striking the center concrete median. Soto was released on an I-Bond and will appear in court at a later date.

James Malik, 30, of Moline, was arrested at 2 a.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Mud Creek Road at Indian Heights Drive.

Malik was released on scene and will appear in court at a later date.

Michael P. Labay, 35, of Rockford, was arrested at 2:05 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies stopped him in the 9000 block of North Kishwaukee Road. Labay also was cited for

Morris, was arrested at 9:46 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license, improper container of cannabis/driver and an outstanding Ogle County arrest warrant for failure to appear after deputies stopped her in the 3000 block of Illinois Route 2. Wyant also was cited for no rear registration light and operating uninsured motor vehicle. Wyant was taken into custody without incident, transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Jan. 1 About 6:30 a.m., deputies and Lynn-ScottRock Fire Protection District and EMS responded to Interstate 39 mile-marker 106 for a single vehicle crash and found a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee facing north in the west ditch.

Contact was made with the driver, Nathan Iverson, 30, of Rockton. Iverson complained of a hand injury and was treated by EMS personnel and then transported to Rochelle Community Hospital.

After an investigation, it is believed Iverson fell asleep before traveling off the roadway where the Jeep overturned coming to rest upright. Iverson was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and no valid insurance.

Dennis W. Lackey, 47, of DeKalb, was arrested at 10:22 a.m. for driving while license revoked after deputies stopped him in the 1600 block of North River Road. Lackey was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Jan. 2 About 5:30 a.m., deputies and Rochelle Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a

Kilian Atabong, 26, of Snellville, Georgia, was arrested at 6:13 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies responded to the 14000 block of Illinois Route 72 for a report of a car in the south ditch. Atabong also was cited for failure to reduce speed and improper lane use. Atabong was given an I-Bond with a return court date.

Michael Donald, 41, of Omaha, Nebraska, was arrested at 9:18 p.m. for driving on a revoked license after deputies conducted a traffic stop at Freeport and White Oak roads.

Donald also was cited for speeding and was released on a notice to appear.

Jan. 3 Nathaniel Banister, 18, of Leaf River, was arrested at 1:20 a.m. for aggravated battery after deputies were dispatched to 504 E. Third St. in Leaf River for a report of a battery. Banister was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

COUNTY NEWS Ogle County has been issued a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to David Harris, director of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier,” is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law.

This equalization is particularly important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (e.g. school districts, junior college districts, fire protection districts).

If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result.

State law requires property in Illinois to be assessed at one-third (1/3) of its market value.

Farm property is assessed differently, with farm homesites and dwellings subject to regular assessing and equalization procedures, but with farmland and farm buildings assessed according to standards based on productivity.

Byron man dies after crash on New’s Year Day

Tax bills are determined by local taxing bodies when they request money each year to provide services to local citizens.

The assessed value of an individual property determines what portion of the tax burden a specific taxpayer will assume.

That individual’s portion of tax responsibility is not changed by the multiplier.

BYRON – A Byron man died in a one-vehicle crash on New Year’s Day. Bruce Biermann, 70, died at Swedish American Hospital after being transported there for treatment, according to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and Byron Fire Protection District personnel responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Tower Road just south of Oak Grove Road in rural Byron about 5:05 p.m.

Jan. 1, according to a sheriff’s report. A Chevy truck was located in the ditch on the east side of the roadway with Biermann inside.

Byron Fire Protection District personnel extracted Biermann from the vehicle and immediately began life-saving measures, the sheriff’s report read.

Biermann died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the sheriff’s report.

STATE POLICE State Police District 1 announce monthly activity for December Illinois State Police District 1 troopers issued 192 citations, 386 written warnings, and made five criminal arrests during the month of December.

Speeding accounted for 119 citations. There were 13 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/revoked.

Troopers investigated 17 traffic crashes, assisted 93 motorists, and conducted 157 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 22 of

which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

There were three arrests for driving while under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated one fatal traffic crash in December.

2021 Ogle County tentative multiplier announced

annually for each county by comparing the sales price of individual properties sold over the past three years to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments/county assessor.

If this three-year average level of assessment is one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be one.

If the average level of assessment is greater than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be less than one.

And if the average level of assessment is less than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be greater than one.

Assessments in Ogle County are at 33.16 percent of market value, based on sales of properties in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The equalization factor currently being assigned is for 2021 taxes, payable in 2022.

Last year’s equalization factor for the county was 1.0000.

The tentative factor is subject to change if the County Board of Review takes actions which significantly affect the county assessments or if local officials or others can present data showing that the Department of Revenue’s estimates of the average level of assessments in the county should be adjusted.
