OREGON – Ogle County Clerk Laura Cook has announced the training schedule for election judges.

“We will be conducting schools for judges of election and we have scheduled different times. All schools will be held at the historical Ogle County Courthouse located at 105 S. Fifth St., Oregon. We will

POLO – Country Financial representative Jeanette Linker has donated $1,500 to the Polo Fire Protection District to support the purchase of equipment and other needs.

“Our firefighters do so much to protect all of us. The least we can do is to support them with the tools they need for their lifesaving work,” Linker said in a news release.

Country Financial has donated more than $5 million since 2020 to organizations and programs that support first responders, active-duty service members and veterans, supporting the company’s vision to “enrich lives in the communities we serve.” The Operation Helping Heroes program was created in 2015 to support nonprofit events and programs that benefit active-duty service members, veterans and their families. The program expanded to include first responders and teachers, according to the release.

Vice president, Chana Education Center Chana Education Center is located in Chana and offers two valuable programs for schools in Ogle and Lee counties.

The Special Education program provides highly specialized programming for students in K-12 who need extra support in behavioral and emotional regulation.

The Challenge program is a program run through the Illinois State Board of Education’s grant-funded Regional Safe Schools Program. This program is for students in grades 6 through 12.

The 12-member districts may use one of the CEC programs if they find that a student is significantly struggling to find success in their home district schools.

Goals for both of the programs include helping students learn and grow academically, socially, emotionally and physically. The programs emphasize learning skills to encourage self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, positive relationships and responsible decision-making.

We encourage a balance between compassion and understanding with learning to handle accountability and consequences.

The first quarter of school proved to be a busy one for students and staff of CEC. Students were welcomed back to a freshened up gym space with new mats and sound absorbing panels provided through grants by the Etynyre Foundation.

This area is the hub of the building and serves not only as gym space, but the cafeteria and school assembly area. Once a month, students and staff join together for a building-wide “Gathering” celebration to recognize positive student achievements, listen to community speakers and join in group learning activities.

The most recent Gathering featured veteran Brandon Dettman, who spoke to students about his time serving the country in the U.S. Army. He shared with students some of the highs and lows of his military career and emphasized the importance of being good citizens of our country.

Service learning is an important component of the CEC program. In the first quarter, multiple classrooms engaged in service-learning activities. Volunteer Jeff Winterland led a group of students on experiences that included cleanup efforts at CEC and local community properties.

Student Kyson has thrived while working with Winterland and has learned skills that will help him in the next chapter of his life after high school.

Other service learning projects included the middle school program handing out treats at the Oregon Elementary School Kindergarten Trunkor-Treat. As relayed afterward by student Jacob, “It actually felt good to be the one to give the candy.”

Helping establish a sense of community is a foundation of learning at CEC. Students grow in their understanding of how a community benefits overall from the contributions of all its members. They witnessed this firsthand with the donation of no longer needed soccer goals from the Oregon Park District for the school grounds.

Students love playing soccer during PE and time outside. The soccer goals also are able to be used respectfully by the Chana community.

Shell gas station of Oregon recently and unexpectedly contributed a donation to the Chana program from its Giving Pump Initiative. The funds will be used to help support the new weekly Chana House program.

In the House program, students and staff have been randomly sorted onto teams to participate in fun challenges throughout the year to earn bragging rights and a chance to hold onto the

House Cup. House programs are used to develop unity, collaboration and cooperative group skills using fun competition. So far teams have spent time growing as a group and participating in challenges such as paper tower making, “Dress like a Teacher” day and a bracket paper plate grab game.

In the academic realm, students completed their fall Measurement of Academic Progress tests. These assessments help our teachers identify the instructional level of the students, as well as determine progress in the areas of reading/language arts and math.

As compared with the fall 2022-23 assessment, students this fall demonstrated progress in both reading and math and met their targeted goals.

Other academic highlights include student Jaxon discovering a specialized talent for basic coding through the use of Touring Tumblers mechanical computers, students Immanuel and Hayden unlocking mental challenges in our BreakoutEdu learning series, and our elementary and middle school students producing creative essays to lure readers to visit their uniquely created haunted houses for Halloween.

In the first part of this school year it’s clear that Chana Education Center has been a hub of activity, fostering not only academic growth, but also a strong sense of community and creativity.

With more events and accomplishments to come, the school year is shaping up to be our best one yet!

Obendorf family expands by two the day after Christmas

Our family not only gathers for the Christmas holiday but we are big on birthdays. We get together for the birthdays of the little ones and remember the adults as well. It is always a great time for the family to be together.

Many years ago when Bruce, our oldest child, was born on the day after Christmas, someone said, “Oh, my, he will get slighted. It will be “Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday.” That never really happened and all through the years as he grew, we took extra measures to acknowledge his important day.

There were beautifully decorated birthday cakes, extra gifts, cards and many good wishes as the years rolled along. I do not think he ever felt slighted even though we were still full from Christmas and the Christmas

This year, his birthday was acknowledged in a big way and the family still is amazed at how it happened.

When we gathered Dec. 23, we were missing two families. Bruce and Robin’s oldest son, Andrew, and Liz were expecting their second child Dec. 29.

Allen, the youngest son, and Mallory were expecting their fourth child Jan. 7.

Naturally they stayed at home when we gathered in Polo and we missed them, especially the little ones who add much to our celebration. All

of the great-grandchildren are rarely together because of the distance of where they live.

Last year, all 40 of us were together in Polo and the house was lively. I enjoyed watching all of them interact with one another. This year was relatively quiet with four little ones gone.

Bruce’s birthday this year hardly had started when Mallory realized she needed to head to the hospital. Mallory is a night nurse and when she had Fritz, who is 2, she was at work when things started to happen. She finished her shift, put her paperwork in order, strolled down to OB and had Fritz. This time it was Christmas night and she was at home.

Soon after midnight on Bruce’s birthday, Allen and Mallory headed to the hospital and about six o’clock in the morning, Violet Robin, weighing

8 pounds, 15 ounces, arrived in the world. During the morning, Allen gave me a call and I was excited that Violet had arrived on Bruce’s birthday. How unique.

Little did we know that around midnight, Andrew and Liz also had headed to the hospital in another area of the Chicago suburbs. At 1:25 p.m., Maxwell Joseph arrived in the world weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces. I got the call in the evening and was totally amazed at a second baby arriving on Bruce’s birthday. What were the chances of that happening?

What a birthday gift. I can imagine all the future birthday parties on the day after Christmas for our family.

Keeping time: 12- and 24-hour clocks and daylight saving time

By OTTO DICK The 12-hour time clock is common in several English-speaking nations, as well as a few others. Elsewhere in Europe, time is based on the 24-hour system of keeping time. 12 p.m. indicates 12 o’clock noon and 12 a.m. means midnight.

The natural day and night of a calendar day forms the fundamental basis as to why each day is split into two cycles. One cycle tracked to position of the sun (day). It was followed by tracking the moon at night.

The terms a.m. and p.m. are abbreviations of Latin’s ante meridiem (before midday) and post meridiem (after midday). The abbreviations a.m. and p.m. should be written in small letters and uppercase letters AM and

PM without periods.

When I was serving in the U.S. Army, Army time was the 24-hour clock and our wristwatches were 12-hour clocks.

When the Romans used a 12-hour clock, daylight was divided into 12 equal hours, so each hour varied in length throughout the year. They divided night into four watches.

In Egypt, a sundial was used for daytime use and an Egyptian water clock for keeping time at night.

Daylight saving time The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin. He proposed this in a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris. He wrote waking up earlier in the summer would lower candle use and pro-

duce considerable savings.

Daylight saving time was first implemented in the U.S. with the Standard Time Act of 1918. Daylight saving time was implemented during World War I and also during World War II to conserve energy. Permanent daylight saving time was enacted for the winter of 1974, but there were complaints of children going to school in the dark and working people commuting and starting their workday in pitch darkness during the winter months and it was repealed a year later.

Daylight saving time is of little use in locations near the equator because these regions see only a small variation in daylight over the course of the year. We spring forward one hour in the spring and fall back one hour in the fall. As a result, there is one

23-hour day in early spring and one 25-hour day in the middle of autumn.

Like everything else, some people and groups oppose daylight saving time. There have been movements to stay on the summer hours permanently all year with no time changes.

Hawaii and Arizona do not observe daylight saving time.

A change in federal law would be necessary to allow states to observe daylight saving time permanently all year.

In the U.S., daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March (spring forward) and ends on the first Sunday in November (fall back).

PAMELA JEAN TAUCH (DAHLIN) When the time was right, God brought them Born: September 23, 1963 Died: December 19, 2023 Pamela Jean Tauch (Dahlin) peacefully went home to her Lord Jesus’ loving arms on December 19, 2023. She was surrounded by family and friends at her home in Oregon, Illinois. Her brave battle with a very difficult cancer had ended. Pam was born in Chicago, Illinois to Kenneth and Lois Dahlin (Kness) on September 23, 1963. She grew up the eldest of their three daughters. As a very young girl, Pam was chased around the kindergarten playground by a boy named Tom Tauch who would later become her husband.

After both had graduated from Luther North High School, Pam went on to complete her bachelor’s degree in nutrition and Tom built up his construction and remodeling business.

TY L. HANNEBAUM Born: December 21, 1970 Died: January 28, 2024 Ty L. Hannebaum, 53, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

He was born on December 21, 1970, in Kansas City, MO; the son of Leroy and Linda (Taylor) Hannebaum. Ty graduated from Manhattan High School class of 1989, then subsequently graduated from Kansas State University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and later earned an M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University. Ty held a professional engineer (P.E.) license in the state of Illinois.

LEHRKE Born: August 25, 1999 in Rockford, IL Died: December 18, 2023 in Freeport, IL Jarod Michael Lehrke, age 24, gained his angel wings after a sudden, unexpected seizure in his home in Freeport, IL. He was born August 25, 1999 in Rockford, IL, the third child of Jeff and Kate (Noirfalise) Lehrke.

Jarod worked for Stewart Security in Freeport, IL, as an unarmed security patrol officer.

He also worked for JC WiFi in Freeport, IL as a tower and home wifi antenna installer. Jarod was active in the Boy Scouts of America all of his life. He earned the rank of an Eagle Scout on December 15, 2014 with 7 palms through the Oregon Boy Scout Troop 52 of Oregon, IL. Jarod is a member of the Order of The Arrow by sealing his Brotherhood. He spent several years on Camp Staff at Camp Lowden BSA,

back into each other’s lives. They married on September 15,1991 and God blessed them with 32 beautiful years of marriage, three children and five grandchildren.

Pam’s life truly reflected the heart of Jesus to all those around her. Jesus described himself as “gentle and lowly in heart.” At his core was the desire to love and serve others. Pam was never one to turn down an opportunity to serve, pouring endlessly into the lives of those around her. She worked hard at all she did: careers in dietetics, working at her dad’s company, teaching piano, and most recently as a librarian who was beloved by her co-workers as well as patrons of the Oregon Public Library. It was her joy to serve at the church in children’s ministry, planning family camps and other events that brought people together. She loved seeing people come together in community and always sought out those who most needed a friend. Pam saw value and beauty in every person. If you had asked her how she knew God was good, she would have simply said “creation.” Every-

where she turned, she saw God’s handprint.

She loved hiking, camping and taking walks around the park admiring the complexity and beauty of creation. She enjoyed gardening, nurturing and watching as beauty unfolded even when it meant spending countless hours with her hands in the dirt repeatedly pulling out persistent weeds. But Pam saw God’s best handiwork in people. Psalm 18:19 reads, “[God] led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.” God delights in his children, and if anything is true of Pam, it is that she delighted in her children.

To know Pam was to know how deeply and sacrificially she loved her family. The last 32 years of Pam’s life were wholly lived loving God, her husband, children and grandchildren.

Pam stayed home to raise and homeschool her children. She was present in every high and every low. She sought to give them all she had, to raise them to know the love and compassion of Jesus. In her last days, Pam was more concerned with caring for the needs and hearts of her family than her own discomforts or pain, expressing her greatest

desire was “to finish well”. And that she did.

It can be said with certainty by all who knew her, that on the night Pam walked through heaven’s gates and Jesus wrapped his arms around her, she heard his words, “Well done, good and faithful servant...enter into the joy of your master.” Matthew 25:21 Pam is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Tauch, children Trevor Thomas (Anna Marie Petri), Nathan Allan and Amanda Jean; grandchildren Dimitri, Everly, Sebastian, Xavier and Charlotte; her sisters Kristen (Pat) Mendicino and Karen Aranza; nephews Lucas and Brandon; nieces Alex and Gabi and many other family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Evangelical Free Church of Mt. Morris located at 102 S. Seminary in Mt. Morris, Illinois 61054. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., the service at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon immediately following.

Frank recognized former students; those who were frequently sent to his office held a special place in his heart.

Family was Frank’s North Star: He oversaw the education of his children, tutored his grandchildren, and helped with countless wood-working projects, including his grandson’s Eagle Scout project. In retirement, he and Mary Lou often visited their youngest son’s family in the Pacific Northwest, where the grandchildren shared their love of the great outdoors. Back home, Frank and Mary Lou babysat, transported, and cheered on four active grandsons. A highlight of their retirement was a trip to the Holy Land, where they were baptized in the River Jordan. A lifelong learner, Frank was most proud that his children and grandchildren hold 14 college and post-graduate degrees. Frank managed his own affairs well into his 90s: At 95, he brokered the sale of his home, leaving his son, a lawyer, with little to do but drive him to the closing.

Those who will forever cherish Frank’s memory include: His daughter, Maralee; sons Doug (Betsy) Floski, Byron; Curt (Marci) Floski, Redmond, Oregon; grandchildren, Jacob Floski (fiancé Magdalena Lasek); twins Christian and Patrick (Tess) Floski; Ben and Jack Floski; and great-granddaughters Izabella, twins Samantha and Meghan, Jaydyn,

Olivia and Piper. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son-in-law Joel Kaufman, his cherished granddaughter Abigail Floski, and close family friend Carey Burkhard.

Memorial service will be Saturday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Disciples United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris with the Revs. Marcia Peddisord, pastor, and Rodney Caldwell, pastor of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren/ chaplain of Allure of Pinecrest, co-officiating.

Full military rites will be accorded immediately following the service outside the church. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church. Private family interment will be held at Silver Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be entrusted to the Floski Family Foundation C/O Stillman Bank, for an education scholarship in Frank’s name, or to any organization benefitting the people of Ogle County.

Despite the loss of our patriarch, it is by Frank’s humble example that we move forward, guided by the promise he made to himself as the only child in a family bereft by a Christmas Eve tragedy: “I’m gonna have a big family and I’m never gonna be alone.” And so, it was.

Judge orders man to stay out of Polo Criminal sexual assault case continues for Armon Pearson

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A man accused of sexually assaulting a teenager in Polo in 2022 was released from custody Dec. 27 as his case proceeds through the court system with the conditions that he have no contact with the alleged victim and stay out of town.

Armon D. Pearson, 23, of Markham, is charged with the criminal sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl in Polo on Dec. 13, 2022.

An arrest warrant was issued for Markham in July when the charge was filed and his bond was set at $150,000, meaning he would have to post 10% ($15,000) in order to be released.

Pearson was arrested Dec. 22 and appeared in court Dec. 26. His detention hearing was set for Dec. 27, when he appeared in shackles and handcuffs

wearing an orange jumpsuit issued to Ogle County Correctional Center inmates.

Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten argued Pearson should not be released from custody.

“Criminal sexual assault does qualify as a detainable offense,” Leisten said.

In making his argument to Judge John Redington, Leisten said police reports indicated the assault took place in the south end of Polo about 10:52 p.m. at or near the Village Inn Motel. Leisten said the victim told police Pearson put his hand over her mouth and “would kill her” if she made noise. Leisten said she told police she was raped twice.

Leisten told the court the girl was taken to KSB for sexual assault testing with those results being sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab. Motel records indicated Pearson had registered for a room for one night on Dec. 13, 2022, Leisten said.

Leisten said Polo police reports indicated Pearson may have known the

girl’s sister. The sister passed away in an auto accident in 2023.

Questioned by Chicago Metro Police, Pearson denied knowing the girl or having been in or knowing of Polo or Ogle County, Leisten said.

Leisten said Pearson also told Chicago investigators that he had been texting with a Polo girl on the internet with the dating app Plenty of Fish.

“He said he thought he had hooked up with her and acknowledged they had sex,” Leisten said.

Leisten said Pearson’s past criminal history included a charge of battery in Kane County in 2020.

“We ask that the defendant be detained,” Leisten said.

Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien represented Pearson in court and argued that the girl was “unclear” to police on where the alleged assault took place. He argued that Pearson maintains the girl “made the first move.”

O’Brien said Pearson was denied a public defender for the case and will

lose his job if he is detained.

“He was denied due to employment, but he will not be employed if he is continued to be detained,” O’Brien said.

“These are serious allegations,” O’Brien said, asking Redington to consider releasing Pearson with strict conditions.

Redington agreed to release Pearson with the conditions that he not have any contact with the alleged victim.

“No contact with the minor at all,” Redington told Pearson. “You cannot see her or text her or email her ... nothing on social media or through someone else. Even if she contacts you.”

“I wouldn’t think of it,” Pearson said.

“And you are not to be in the city limits of Polo under any circumstances at all,” Redington said, ordering Pearson to report to the probation department after his release from the jail.

Pearson’s next court hearing is 10 a.m. Jan. 10.

“You must be here,” Redington said.

“And you need to have your own attorney here.”

Rochelle man appears in court on stabbing charge

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A Rochelle man accused of taking part in a stabbing in October appeared in court Dec. 27.

Jesse J. Mohica, 23, is accused of stabbing and punching a man on Oct. 7 in Rochelle.

Mohica was arrested Nov. 27 and has been held in the Ogle County Correctional Center. He also is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and mob action.

Mohica appeared in court with Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien who asked for a continuance.

Redington set the next hearing for 1 p.m. Jan. 17.

A warrant also has been issued nationwide for another man in connection with the case. Bailey J. Gildea, 29, of Rochelle, is charged in connection with the incident. Gildea is Jesse J. Mohica charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, mob action, aggravated fleeing to elude authorities and resisting arrest. Gildea is being charged as an accomplice and also is accused of punching the man.

Gildea has a felony criminal history in the county dating to 2016, when he was indicted on a drug-dealing charge,

court records show.

On June 23, 2017, he was sentenced to six years for dealing cocaine and sent to boot camp.

Another count of dealing cocaine was dismissed.

Bailey J. Gildea On July 15 and 27, 2022, Gildea was involved in the beating of two men, one of whom he punched, causing a concussion, court records show.

On Dec. 19, 2022, he was sentenced in those two cases and one other to a year and a half in prison, terms to run concurrently, for two counts of mob action, aggravated battery and criminal dam-

age to government property. Possession of a controlled substance and two counts of aggravated battery were dismissed according to his plea agreement.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Gildea was paroled from the Centralia Correctional Center on June 1 and is considered an absconder.

Gildea is 5 feet, 10 inches tall with auburn hair and blue eyes. He has “Carmyn” tattooed on his right lower arm, “Adalynn” on his left lower arm and an eye inside a triangle on this left hand.

Darren T. Barker, 53, of Mt. Morris was arrested at 8:25 p.m. for possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver and forgery following a

traffic stop in the 100 block of East Hitt Street. Barker also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Barker was taken to the Ogle County jail and released with a notice to appear.

Dec. 29 Heather L. Heathcott, 42, Mt. Morris was arrested at 9:15 p.m. in the 10 block of East Front Street on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a traffic violation. Heathcott was taken to the Ogle County jail.

About 3:45 p.m. Dec. 30, Mt. Morris police were sent to Sullivan’s for a report of a hit-and-run. After an investigation, Sandra L. Parks, 63, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving while under the influence, leaving the scene of accident/ property damage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Parks was taken to the Ogle County jail and given a notice to appear.

Charges are accusations and defendants are presumed innocent unless proved guilty in a court of law.

MT. MORRIS POLICE Dec. 9 Jasmine B. Gasmund, 22, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. for driving while license suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle following a traffic stop in the 100 block of East Center Street. Gasmund was taken to the Ogle County jail and released with a notice to appear.

Silvia Rogers, 56, of Leaf River, was arrested for disorderly conduct after deputies responded to a disturbance in the 100 block of Main Street about 3:03 p.m. It was the third time Rogers was arrested against the same victim in eight days.

Rogers was taken to the Ogle County jail and released on a notice to appear.

A 16-year-old male, of Florida, was arrested for no valid license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 southbound mile marker 97 about 11:21 p.m. The juvenile was released from the scene to a parent and given a notice to appear and a future court date.

Nicole Mason, 41, of Oregon, was cited for driving while license suspended and speeding after a traffic stop in the 17000 block of east Illinois Route 64 about 3:04 p.m. Mason was released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

Tiffiny Adcock, 44, who is homeless, was taken into custody for an outstanding Ogle County failure to appear warrant for a minor traffic violation. On Dec. 18 and 19, deputies responded to the Grand Detour

area for multiple calls of trespass to residence/property. An investigation showed Adcock had entered one home and then gone onto the property of other residences. Adcock left the area before deputies arrived Dec. 18. She was found Dec. 19, when she again was attempting to enter multiple residences. None of the property owners wished to pursue charges. Adcock was taken to the Ogle County jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jonathon McDonald, 43, of DeKalb, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 38 and North Pointe Drive in Rochelle about 9:53 p.m. McDonald also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. McDonald was released on a notice to appear.

Deputies and Mount Morris Fire Protection District and EMS responded to a one-vehicle crash with minor injuries in the 6000 block of North Mt. Morris Road about 6:30 a.m. An investigation showed Eric Bocker, 49, of Leaf River, was driving a Dodge Ram pickup south on North Mt. Morris Road when he struck a farm animal that had gotten loose and was in the roadway. Bocker was treated at the scene for a minor injury and released.

Ezekiel R. Newton, 22, of Dixon, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Illinois Route 251 near Mower’s Road about 2:53 p.m. Newton also was cited for operating a vehicle with suspended registration. Newton was released on a notice to appear.

Kayla Martin, 31, of Springfield, was arrested for an active Ogle County warrant for possession of methamphetamine after deputies responded to the 1000 block of North Moore Road regarding suspicious activity about 7:28 a.m. Martin also was arrested for obstructing justice (Class 4 felony) for providing false information and for driving while license suspended.

Martin was taken to the Ogle County jail and held pending a court appearance for the warrant. Martin was released on a notice to appear for all other charges.

Romeo Lewis, of Schaumburg, was cited for speeding and driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 6000 block of east Illinois Route 64 about 9:35 a.m. Lewis was released from the scene on a notice to appear.

Dec. 22

Charles L. Macias, 49, of Rockford, was

arrested for an outstanding Rockford Police Department warrant for unlawful use of a weapon/no FOID after deputies responded to a 911 hang-up in the 200 block of East Hillcrest Drive in Byron about 2:19 a.m.

Jennifer Nash, 50, of Holcomb, was arrested on an Ogle County warrant for a traffic offense contempt of court after deputies responded to a welfare check in the 200 block of Main Street in Holcomb about 4:50 a.m. Nash was taken to the Ogle County jail and held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded to the area of 7 W. Center St., Mount Morris about 8:55 a.m. and arrested Brandon Anderson, 34, of Mount Morris, for an Ogle County failure to appear warrant and John Anderson, 65, of Mount Morris on an Ogle County failure to appear warrant for larceny. Both males were taken to the Ogle County jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jesus Diaz, 43, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended and suspended registration after a traffic stop at Pine and Roosevelt roads in Stillman Valley about 12:16 p.m. Diaz was taken to the Ogle County jail and released on a notice to appear.

SHERIFF REPORTS 12 •Continued from page 9 Rogelio Gallardo, 56, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a report of a male asleep behind the wheel at Casey’s General Store, 215 Powers Road, Hillcrest, about 5 p.m. Gallardo was taken to the Ogle County jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

Dec. 23

Kyle Macias, 41, of Oregon, was cited for driving while under the influence of alcohol, no valid driver’s license, improper lane use, no insurance and failure to report an accident. About 6:28 a.m., deputies responded to the 5000 block of North River Road for a single-vehicle crash. Deputies found a black Chevrolet pickup truck unoccupied, but later found Macias walking. An investigation showed Macias appeared to be southbound on North River Road when he failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the west side of the roadway before striking an embankment. The vehicle then went airborne, struck a mailbox and rolled at least once before coming to rest. Macias was taken

by Byron EMS to SwedishAmerican Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Macias was given a notice to appear for his citations. Further charges are pending.

About 8:57 a.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash near the intersection of Coffman and Rock City roads. An investigation showed Courtney Melvin, 31, of Forreston, was driving a black Ford Fusion west on Coffman Road. Melvin was approaching the Rock City Road intersection while negotiating a curve in foggy conditions when her vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway.

Melvin’s vehicle struck a ditch embankment before overturning on its side.

Melvin and a 9-year-old passenger were checked at the scene by German Valley EMS and refused medical attention.

Debora L. Waters, 45, of Lindenwood, was arrested for driving on a suspended license, resisting/obstructing a police officer, obstructing identification and two Ogle County warrants after a traffic stop on North Mulford Road at East Crill Road at 10:45 p.m. She also was cited for defective windshield and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Waters was taken to the Ogle County jail and held pending a court appearance on the two Ogle County warrants. She was issued a notice to appear and given a future court date for all new charges. The Illinois State Police assisted.

Dec. 26

Zachery A. Letcher, 28, of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear about 7:58 a.m. Letcher was able to post bond and was released from the Ogle County jail with no further court dates.

William J. Schorsch, 59, of Creston, was arrested for failure to register as a sex offender after deputies conducted a warrant service in the 300 block of Irene Avenue in Rochelle about 9:55 a.m.

Schorsch was taken to the Ogle County jail and held pending a court appearance.

About 5:23 p.m., deputies responded to the 7000 block of North Kishwaukee Road for a report of a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle causing minor injuries.

An investigation showed Jamie McCarty, 45, of Byron, was westbound on Illinois Route 72 when he struck a juvenile pushing a bicycle along the side of the roadway. The juvenile suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention.

Jose Galindo Matute, 61, of Freeport, was arrested for driving with no valid license after a traffic stop in the 10000 block of north Illinois Route 26 about 8:39 p.m. Galindo Matute also was cited for speeding and an inoperable headlight.

Galindo Matute was taken to the Ogle County jail and released on a notice to appear.

Dec. 27

Rene Garcia-Quinto, 41, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop on Seventh Street and Cleveland Avenue in Rochelle about 7:33 p.m. Garcia-Quinto also was cited for expired registration. Garcia-Quinto was taken to the Ogle County jail, released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

A 15-year-old juvenile, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 1000 block of north Illinois Route 251 at 8:47 p.m. The juvenile also was cited for suspended registration/non-insured. The 15-year-old was released to a family member on a notice to appear.

Edward J. Turek, 49, of Davis Junction, was arrested for two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of assault after deputies responded to a report of a domestic in the 1000 block of Northwestern Avenue in Davis Junction at 11:51 p.m. Turek was taken to the Ogle County jail and held pending a court appearance.

Dec. 29

Jessica Hernandez, 24, of Rochelle, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant about 8:19 a.m. Hernandez posted bond and was released with no additional court dates.

Israel Ibarra, 35, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after

a traffic stop at South Seventh Street and Lakeview Road in Rochelle at 1:37 p.m.

Ibarra was released from the scene on a notice to appear.

William Eckles, 41, of Dixon, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant about 1:50 p.m. Eckles posted bond and was released with no additional court dates.

Jose Zacatzi-Toniz, 31, of DeKalb, was cited for improper passing, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle after deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in the area of Illinois Route 64 and South Mulford Road at 6:56 p.m.

Zacatzi-Toniz was driving a white Toyota east on Route 64 and entered the westbound lane attempting to pass another vehicle. Zacatzi-Toniz struck a westbound white Hyundai driven by Sarah Goshko, 29, of DeKalb. Goshko was taken by Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Protection District to a local hospital for suspected minor injuries. Zacatzi-Toniz was taken by Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Protection District to a local hospital for suspected major injuries. Zacatzi-Toniz was given a notice to appear and future court date and then was left in the care of hospital staff.

Angel Hernandez-Santiago, 21, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at the Pilot Truck Stop, 1201 Illinois Route 38 at 9:22 p.m. Hernandez-Santiago was released on a notice to appear.

Dec. 30

Steven Meyers, 24, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, a concealed carry weapon violation, improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash in the area of 4000 East Walden Road at 1:15 a.m. An investigation showed Meyers was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado east on Walden Road when the vehicle left the roadway, became airborne and struck a tree before coming to rest on a pile of wood. Meyers was taken to the Ogle County jail, booked and released on a notice to appear.

Brandon T. Wilken, 31, of Rockton, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop in the 9000 block of North Pecatonica Road about 1:44 a.m. Wilken also was cited for improper lane use. Wilken was taken to the Ogle County jail and released on a notice to appear.

Deputies and Rochelle Fire Department EMS responded to a one-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Ritchie and South Woodlawn roads about 7:14 a.m. At the time of the crash, a heavy freezing fog prevented visibility and road

conditions were slick. An investigation showed Monique S. Griggs, 28, of DeKalb, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu east on Ritchie Road and failed to stop at the posted stop sign before striking an embankment. Griggs was taken to Rochelle Community Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Dec. 31

Hilario Limon-Garcia, 33, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop. About 7:02 p.m., deputies received a report of a driving complaint on a westbound black GMC Envoy in the area of the 20000 block of east Illinois Route 64. At 7:13 p.m., deputies stopped the offending vehicle, driven by Limon-Garcia, as it was trying to enter Interstate 39 northbound onto the I-39 southbound exit ramp from Route 64. Limon-Garcia also was cited with driving while license suspended and improper lane use. Limon-Garcia was released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

Jan. 1

Caleb Moses, 19, of Rochelle, was arrested for domestic battery and aggravated criminal damage to property (Class 4 felony) after deputies responded to a report of a physical domestic in the 300 block of South Kaye Lane in Creston about 7:18 a.m. Moses was taken to the Ogle County jail and held pending a court appearance.

Michael Onley-Carr, 29, of Winnebago, was arrested for driving while license suspended and an active Winnebago County failure to appear warrant after a traffic stop in the 3000 block of south Illinois Route 2 about 4:16 p.m. He also was cited for improper display of a plate attachment and operating an uninsured vehicle. Onley-Carr was taken to the Ogle County jail, released on a notice to appear for the driving while license suspended and held in lieu of bond on the warrant.

Fernando Navarrete-Posadas, 48, of Davenport, Iowa, was arrested for no driver’s license after a traffic stop on a silver Chevrolet pickup truck bearing Texas registration on Interstate 88 westbound at Interstate 39 about 7:52 p.m. He also was cited for speeding and given a warning for illegal transportation of alcohol. Navarrete-Posadas was taken into custody without incident, transported to the Ogle County jail, fingerprinted, released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

Charges are accusations and all people are presumed innocent unless proved guilty in a court of law.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: ROCK ISLAND ALLEMAN 48, STILLMAN VALLEY 37

DIXON – The Stillman Valley girls basketball team made it to the finals of the 45th Dixon Holiday Classic, but couldn’t recover from a 14-point deficit at the end of the first quarter and fell 48-37 to champion Rock Island Alleman.

“I think they made something like 5-of-6 3-pointers to start the game,” SV coach Bobby Mellon said. “We came in a zone and it wasn’t our best rotation.

We made adjustments the rest of the game.”

Trailing 13-2 and 22-8 in the first quarter, the Cardinals (16-4) outscored Alleman (17-2) in the final three quarters, 29-26 in what could be a preview of a sectional matchup. Alleman is ranked No. 6 in Class 2A and has plenty of size and experience.

“The difference in the first quarter and the second was that we hit shots in the first,” Alleman coach Steve Ford said.

Taylor Davidson scored six straight points to begin the Cardinals’ rally. A pair of free throws by Mya Janssen and a 3-pointer by Brooke Jordal kept Stillman even the rest of the first half.

Both teams struggled in the third quarter with the Cardinals missing their first six shots before Davidson tacked on seven points, including a long-range jumper, that pulled her team to within 39-28 with 1:30 left in the third quarter.

“No. 15 (Davidson) makes them go.

Our focus on defense was on her,” Ford said.

Girls take the court at Dixon’s long-running tournament It was off to Dixon last week for some girls basketball as Stillman Valley faced Rock Island Alleman in the championship game of one of the longest-running tourneys in the state at 45 years.

Remember, the first IHSA girls title game wasn’t until 1977, with Sterling winning it.

Basically, the Dixon event, which has a mix of small and larger schools, has been going on almost as long as sanctioned girls basketball in Illinois.

Credit to Stillman Valley for defeating Sterling (enrollment 978) and East Moline (1,740) to reach the finals. Against Alleman, the Cardinals were hurt by hot shooting by their opponent in the first quarter.

After that, it was an even game, giving credence to Stillman Valley’s ability to compete against Alleman should the two meet in the sectional.

Particularly impressive was the play of Taylor Davidson, who is the catalyst for the Cardinals. She drew rave reviews from opposing coaches.

In a wide-open Big Northern conference, Stillman Valley, Byron, Lutheran and Dixon will contend for

Getting back to the history of basketball in Illinois, it is shameful how long it took for the IHSA to recognize the sport for girls. Before 1973, girls basketball was played under the context of the Girls Athletic Association.

Second-rate facilities and ugly outfits categorized GAA basketball. The IHSA even forbid competition between schools.

Instead, you played intramural against other girls from your school.

Or occasionally there would be a “play day” where a few other schools would get together and have a friendly competition.

The Cardinals defense turned up the pressure by forcing seven turnovers in the third quarter and holding Alleman to six points.

“We played incredible defense the whole tournament,” Mellon said. “We always showed fight.”

An Amelia Dunseth basket to start the fourth quarter pulled Stillman to a single-digit deficit for the first time

since the opening minutes of the game.

Unfortunately, that was as close as it would come the rest of the game with Alleman’s defense going into clampdown mode.

“We had open looks, but weren’t knocking them down,” Mellon said.

The Cardinals came up empty on six straight possessions before a 3-pointer by Dunseth with two minutes left. Davidson added a couple of more points as Alleman dominated the rebounds.

“Even though we struggled on offense at the end, our aggressiveness on the boards paid off,” Ford said.

To reach the finals, Stillman Valley defeated much larger schools in East Moline and Sterling by 12 and 10 points. Davidson had 32 points against East Moline, including 18 free throws.

“She’s very good at getting in the lane and finishes well around the rim,” said Cliff Bardell of Polo, who is an assistant coach for Sterling. “Davidson is a special player,” Against Alleman, Davidson had 19 points.

Byron (10-5) went 2-2 in the tournament with wins over Eastland and Dixon and losses to East Moline and Alleman.

They did have a “postal” tournament. How it worked was this: a school would set up 10 spots around the basket for girls to attempt shots.

A GAA rep would count the baskets made and send them in the mail (hence the term postal) to the IHSA for an official tabulation and overall winner. Yes, that was how a state winner was determined.

It all sounds weird now, but that was the case before the mid-1970s when sexism was more rampant than it is now. Sexism still exists, but not nearly as blatant.

nearly as many girls games as I do the boys. One thing that has changed for the positive is the amount of media coverage for the girls.

That has been ramped up for both high school and college, but not so much for the professional league. For the most part, girls basketball has come of age and is enjoying its best popularity ever.

Byron leads the county with five state final appearances and three state trophies. Stillman Valley has been downstate three times with one trophy. Back in 1981, Forreston made its lone appearance.

Oregon and Polo are still looking for that much-coveted trip.

Shaw Local News Network correspondent Oregon wrestling coach Justin Lahman hoped for a top-half finish as the injury-hampered Hawks headed to Springfield for the Abe’s Rumble Dual Team Wrestling Tournament.

Surprisingly, Oregon finished eighth, its second-best finish ever.

“The kids really wrestled hard and came together as a team this weekend,” Lahman said. “We took some losses at the end against the elite of Class A wrestling but showed improvement all the way through even though we were missing a couple of our top wrestlers.

What a great weekend.”

Oregon rolled fairly easily through its pool matches, its only loss to thirdplace finisher Roxanna. The Hawks were one of four pool runners-up to reach the second round of the championship bracket and the only team with a loss to reach the round of eight.

That round was a Who’s Who of Illinois wrestling with half the teams in the round having a state dual team championship trophy, including Oregon. The team title was won by tournament newcomer Marian Central Catholic, a pin in the waning seconds of the second-to-last match propelling it to a 32-31 win over Coal City.

Oregon defeated Shelbyville 48-21, Ottawa-Marquette 57-10 and Dwight 54-12 in Pool E and lost 55-15 to Roxanna to finish second in the pool. In the first round of the championship bracket, the Hawks sent Clifton Central to the other side with a 42-34 comefrom-behind win. Oregon trailed 34-30 with two matches left and Anthony Bauer and Jackson Glendenning came through with pins to advance the Hawks.

Glendenning played a big part in the next round with a pin in the second-tolast match to seal a 39-36 win over Fithian-Oakwood to send Oregon to the

round of eight. Clifton Central won the rest of its matches to take first in the silver bracket, essentially 17th place.

Oakwood also won out to take ninth place.

Things got tougher for Oregon.

Eventual fourth-place finisher Petersburg-PORTA defeated Oregon 60-24 in a fast-moving match to drop the Hawks to the consolation bracket where they lost 51-29 to fifth-place Vandalia. LenaWinslow defeated Oregon in the seventh-place match 55-21, a big improvement over their 62-3 loss to the Pantherhawks in early December.

Oregon was paced by Nelson Benesh, winning four matches by fall, taking two forfeits and winning a 4-0 decision as he bounced between 113 and 120 pounds. Quentin Berry pinned four times and collected a forfeit and a decision at 190 pounds. Landen Ege contributed four pins working between the 113 and 120-pound weight classes. Colton Flaharty had two pins and a forfeit at

120 pounds, making that the most effective weight class for Oregon.

Landen Elder pinned twice at heavyweight and had another pin at 215. Seth Rote had three pins and a forfeit at 215.

Glendenning scored three pins, two of them crucial to Hawks wins. Bauer won twice by fall, had two forfeits, three decisions and a technical fall for 26 team points. Also with two pins were Ethan Mowry at 150 and Zander VandeSand at 175. VandeSand also had a pin at 190 and Mowry took a forfeit.

Preston LaBay pinned once and collected three forfeits and a decision.

Andrew Young had a pin and two forfeits at 175. Leyton Kenney pinned in his only match. Dylen Ware received two forfeits. Briggs Sellers and Jackson Messenger each took a forfeit. Jayden Berry at 138 added a forfeit to the total.

Jakobi Donegan wrestled at 144, Jack Tinsman wrestled at 190 and Maxx George wrestled three matches at heavyweight.

Hawks wrestlers fall to Byron and Harvard in dual meets

Shaw Local News Network correspondent The Hawks wrestlers took a disappointing loss in Byron, losing 43-34 to the Tigers, and lost another tough one 37-32 to Harvard in the Blackhawk Center.

The injury-depleted Hawks had trouble stringing wins together and the score was tight all the way in both meets.

The Harvard meet was especially rough.

Oregon looked to be in control and on the way to another win, but a penalty call led to an injury default that swung the meet to the Hornets.

Wrestling started at 165 against Byron and the Tigers started on top with Jackson Glendenning getting pinned in a double chicken wing at 3:06.

Zander VandeSand went at 175 and grabbed a chicken wing at 2:11. At 190,

Quentin Berry was turned in a chicken wing at 5:08.

Seth Rote added six at 215, hitting a hip toss for a pin at 1:01. Landen Elder was holding his own on his feet at 285 until he was tripped and taken to his back at 1:46. Oregon had to forfeit 106 and the Hawks were down 12 points.

At 113, Nelson Benesh couldn’t quite get the pin in the third and won a 13-0 major decision. Landen Ege didn’t get much going in the 120-pound match and lost an 8-0 major decision.

Dylen Ware was turned in a half nelson in 40 seconds in the 126-pound match.

Preston LaBay got the points back at 132 when he hooked up a crook at 137. Oregon had to forfeit 138 and Jayden Berry was given a free pass at 144. Oregon was down 12 points with two matches to go.

Needing a pin, Ethan Mowry went after it but came up short on a drive and

dropped a hard-fought 9-3 decision. With the match out of reach. Byron forfeited to Anthony Bauer to end it.

Against Harvard, Benesh found a hip toss for a pin at 5:51. Ege dropped an 8-0 major decision and Ware was pinned in a half nelson in 38 seconds. LaBay had a pin with a half nelson at 1:34 to put the Hawks up by two and Jayden Berry extended the lead with a chicken wing at 1:42. Jakobi Donegan was dropped to his back in a half nelson at 2:22.

At 150, Mowry was on his back four times, losing a 14-3 major decision. After a scoreless first, Bauer caught a throw and pinned with a turk at 5:10.

Glendenning switched at the start of the third to take a 3-2 win. VandeSand lost a duck-under to his back in 33 seconds and the Oregon lead was cut to one point. It looked like Oregon had a good chance to win the meet with Quentin

Berry leading 9-0 when he hit a hard takedown and his opponent was slightly injured. The wrestler chose not to continue and Berry lost by default, putting the Hawks down by five.

Rote did his part with the butcher at 3:00 and Oregon needed a win. Elder had some chances but just not enough weight to finish his moves, dropping a 12-1 major decision and the Hornets came away with an improbable team win.

On the JV mat against Byron, Miles Olsen pinned at 1:49. Brody Eckdahl found a half nelson for a pin at 3:38. Leyton Kenney took a 9-3 win. Nick Burke was pinned in a half nelson at 1:16 and Dawson Alcala was pinned in a headlock at 4:24. Against Harvard, Maxx George won 7-0. Jakob Moser took a 5-1 loss. Nick Burke and Jack Tinsman both were taken down to their backs and pinned in the first minute.

2023 SVM Football Player of the Year: Polo’s Brock Soltow Marcos senior sets I8FA career records while helping team to third straight state semifinals

dwussow@shawmedia.com Polo senior QB/RB/LB Brock Soltow finished his Illinois 8-Man Football Association career with a trip to the state semifinals this fall, and what a career it was.

Soltow walks away as the I8FA’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (83) and total offensive yards (6,670) and ranked second in rushing yards (5,424) and total touchdowns (104).

An I8FA first-team all-state selection for the third straight season and a unanimous first-team all-North 2 Division pick on offense and defense, Soltow accumulated 2,287 all-purpose yards and 34 touchdowns this season, finding the end zone as a runner, passer and receiver.

As a runner, he carried the ball 162 times for 1,535 yards and 20 touchdowns. As a passer, he completed 18 of 45 attempts for 341 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception. As a receiver, he caught 27 passes for 411 yards and seven touchdowns.

Soltow also was an impact player on defense.

At linebacker, he recorded 75 tackles (55 solo), nine tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

For the second straight year, Soltow is the Sauk Valley Media Football Player of the Year.

Soltow answered questions from sports writer Dan Wussow.

The past three years, you’ve been a part of a historic Polo football run, winning an I8FA state championship in 2021 and reaching the state semifinals the past two seasons. How special has it been to be a part of that run and what will you take away from that experience?

Soltow: It was a very special run the

past three years, making it to all of those games and with those players that I got to play with. Making it to the state championship game was the thing I’m going to remember the most. The semifinal games are awesome, too, but there’s a whole different level from a state championship game to a semifinals game. You’re going to be the best team in I8FA or the second-best team. I will be taking from this that you should never quit on a play and give everything you have in life because you will never get another chance to play high school football again and everyone looks for hard workers.

What are a couple of your best memories from this season?

Soltow: My favorite memories from

this season have been ending Milledgeville’s season in the playoffs in

Milledgeville. Another memory would be when we came back against Cambridge when we were down 12 with a minute and 30 left. Then my last one is getting 5,000 rushing yards.

You scored multiple touchdowns rushing, passing and receiving this year. Which type of scoring play is the most satisfying, if one stands out above the others?

Soltow: I think the one that stands

out the most is receiver when I can go up and catch it over someone. My favorite touchdown catch this year was in the playoffs against Milledgeville when I went up and caught it over two defenders.

In Week 3, your team lost 58-22 to Milledgeville, but in the state quarterfinals, you beat the Missiles 35-23. What was the difference for your team from the early season blowout loss to the double-digit playoff win?

Soltow: The difference between the

games was that all of our coaches got together and made a new blocking scheme against their two-line front.

After we figured that out, we were able to run the ball. We were way more prepared for them, too.

How much more comfortable did you feel playing quarterback this year after making the switch, I believe, in Week 4 last year?

Soltow: I felt way more comfortable

this year than last year because I didn’t really get to practice throwing routes or knowing all the plays last year. This year, I figured out all the

plays and got more settled in.

You end your high school football career as the all-time I8FA leader in rushing TDs and total offensive yards and ranked second all-time in rushing yards and total TDs. What is your reaction to hearing those accolades/ numbers and what did it take for you to achieve that success?

Soltow: Hearing these numbers is

crazy, but I can’t do that without my linemen. It took me to achieve these numbers putting in work in the weight room and staying after practice with some of the players. At every practice, you have to give it everything – even during the conditioning – because you won’t be in shape for games and practices and it will get harder and harder.

It’s an amazing feeling to get those numbers.

What is your favorite play that you’ve

made in your high school football career?

Soltow: My favorite play that I made

in my high school career was the catch to win the state championship game. I remember coach [Ted] Alston asking us if we wanted to punt the ball or go for it and I remember all of us saying go for it. I had Tyler Merdian throw me a perfect ball where the defender couldn’t get it.

Who is the best player you played against in your high school football career?

Soltow: The best player that I played

against was Kaiden Droste from West Central. He was in every spot that I would run to when we played in the semifinals. He had one of the craziest runs in an I8FA game when we played to beat us with four seconds left in the game. He was shifty and a quick running back and hard to tackle.
