Area residents of all ages turned out Friday morning to participate in the annual Kendall County New Year’s Day Hike at Lyon Farm near Yorkville. Among those leading the tour was Mark Harrington, a former Oswego resident, retired teacher and outdoor enthusiast. Those attending the free event were asked to bring a donation of three cans of soup, two to be donated to the Kendall County Food Pantry and the remaining can for a communal soup pot which was heated up and enjoyed by the participants following the hike.

A Herscher High School teacher is due at the Kendall County Court on Jan. 7 on charges of multiple counts of felony criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery in connection with an incident involving students from that school at a Yorkville hotel last month. The teacher, David Murphy, 29, is free on bond, which was set at $250,000 shortly after he turned himself in to Yorkville police David Jan. 1. According Murphy to conditions of his bond, Murphy must wear a GPS monitoring device and not have contact with any minors. The Illinois High School Association’s website lists Murphy as head wrestling coach at the school located in downstate Herscher. According to Yorkville police, the incident that led to the charges against Murphy occurred the weekend of Dec. 11. The Herscher High School wrestling team was competing that weekend in a tournament at Plano High School. The charges involve five juveniles and one 18-year-old victim. According to the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, Murphy performed a series of acts on the teens during the course of one evening and the next morning. Murphy also faces an additional misdemeanor charge of renting a hotel room for someone
