Plano City Council approves state tax abatement program

By LYLE R. ROLFE Shaw Media correspondent Commercial and industrial businesses wanting to locate in Plano or those who want to expand, can now do so and may be able to save on part of their property taxes.

A property tax abatement policy resolution introduced by Alderman Mike Rennels, was approved by City Council members at Monday’s city council meeting. The program is available to the city through the state, Rennels said.

He said the legislation was introduced to help cities such as Plano promote economic growth and development. It allows city officials to negotiate the percentage abatement of the increase in collected property tax on commercial and industrial properties if the developer or property owner meets certain criteria as set by the legislation.

The property or project must result in an increased Assessed Valuation of the property.

Rennels said the economic development impact of the proposed project must benefit the community as a whole because of the investment by the developer or owner and the resulting job opportunities, neighboring revitalization

and the increase in the tax base of all taxing districts. And the applicant must show that without the real estate tax abatement as requested, the new project or improvement will not be economically viable, he added.

“For this plan to work we need to have all the other taxing bodies on board. It’s important to have an agreement with the other taxing bodies because the city’s portion of the overall tax bill aren’t really that big,” Rennels said.

He said the city could abate just its portion of the tax bill but it may not be enough to make a difference to a builder. He noted that the legislation said the abatement can not exceed 10 years and the aggregate amount of the abated taxes combined can not exceed $4 million.

Both the terms and the percentage of abatement are negotiated between the city and the applicant, Rennels added.

Mayor Bob Hausler said he did not think taxing bodies such as the county and school district would want to go longer than 4 or 5 years on the abatement, but added that he was aware that this could be negotiated.

“For a business that otherwise might not be able to locate here, it’s just another tool we have to entice them to locate

in Plano,” Rennels said.

All the taxing bodies would have to agree on the rate of reduction on each individual request, he added.

Rennels said at an earlier council meeting when the resolution was first discussed that he talked to Yorkville city officials and learned they used this legislation to help Wrigley with expansion of its factory on Route 47. The length of time and percentage of abatement was agreed to by all the taxing bodies in the city, he said. And it applied only to the new building they constructed.

Rennels said that because it affects only commercial and industrial development, it should be easier to sell to the school district because it does not increase the number of homes being built or add students to the schools.

He said this could result in creating more jobs that could bring more people to the city. “But ideally this could bring economic growth to the whole area,” he added.

“I’d like to thank the Economic Development Committee and Alderman Rennels for the work they did on this.

It’s a good program to have in place for our economic development,” Hausler said after the resolution was unanimously approved.

New home for Plano Historical Society?

By LYLE R. ROLFE Shaw Media correspondent A vacant and deteriorated house at 9 N. View St., near Plano’s downtown, may one day be repaired and turned over to the Plano Historical Society.

Tom Karpas, Plano Building, Planning and Zoning director, told Plano School Board members Monday night that the vacant building has been in a state of deterioration and disrepair for several years. He said it has been vacant as long as he could remember, and recalled that at one time a dentist office may have been in the building.

Karpas said Mayor Bob Hausler began looking into the property and learned that the back taxes along with penalties are at least $40,000. He said it’s not likely anyone could afford to pay the taxes and then invest money in making the building usable for a new business.

He said Hausler’s proposal is that the taxing bodies work cooperatively to ask Kendall County to waive payment of the back taxes so the property could

be turned over to the Plano Historical Society.

“The renovation and rehabilitation work could be done by that group. They do have a bit of money, but the majority of the work will be in the form of in-kind donations of either labor, materials or both,” Karpas said. “What’s before you tonight is an agreement between the city and the school district. The city would put up the funds to get the property out of hock with the county. The taxing bodies would then eventually get the funds due them from the county,” he said.

Karpas said the city is asking that the taxing bodies rebate those taxes back to the city so that in the end the money that they would have received in taxes would be rebated. He said the chances of anything else being done with the building are very slim.

Karpas said he also presented the proposal to the city’s library board about a month ago and they support it.

“Having a building used for this kind of purpose seems much better than hav-

ing it go on and on like it has been,” he said.

School Board President Tim Campbell said the board could continue the proposal for more discussion or approve the agreement at this meeting.

“I think it would be exciting to see the Historical Society get in there and do their thing. So I wouldn’t see any reason for not forwarding this agreement unless someone else has concerns,” Campbell said.

When one of the other board members asked if there was a timeframe for completion, Karpas said the mayor still has to work with the county, adding that most of the other taxing bodies have been positive about the idea. He said the city would hold title to the building because it is buying back the taxes. It would then lease the property to the Historical Society for $1 a year.

Protection order violation

County sheriff’s deputies arrested Phillip John Menefee, 55, of the 200 block of Fernwood Road, Boulder Hill, at his residence Oct. 17 at 8:55 p.m. on a charge of violation of an order of protection. Police said the suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending court proceedings.

Suspicious circumstances

County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a suspicious circumstance incident that occurred at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township Oct. 15 at 10:11 p.m. Police said that they determined that there was a confrontation between unknown individuals that resulted in an aggravated battery.

Attempted burglary

Someone attempted to remove a safe from a home in the 0-100 block of Saugatuck Road in Boulder Hill, county sheriff’s police were told Oct. 15. Police said the suspect or suspects were unsuccessful.

DUI arrest

Yorkville, after stopping his vehicle for multiple lane usage violations in the 9200 block of Van Emmon Road in Yorkville Oct. 14 at 11:30 p.m. Police said Gedvilas was arrested for driving under the influence after he failed a field sobriety test.

Obstructing among charges

County sheriff’s deputies arrested Richard G. Reichman, 34, of the 2100 bock of Hideaway Court, Morris, after stopping the vehicle he was driving for a speeding violation on Route 47 at Whitewillow Road in Lisbon Township Oct. 15 at 11:54 a.m. Police said the suspect refused to identify himself and was placed under arrest. Police said the suspect was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville and faces charges of driving while license revoked, unlawful use of a license and obstructing a peace officer.

Fight investigated

County sheriff’s deputies responded to a fight between two male subjects at a paintball facility located in the 10000 block of Fox River Drive in Fox Township Oct. 15 at 5:04 p.m. Police said they determined the two subjects became involved in a fight during a paintball match.

However, police said no complaints were signed and all parties went their separate ways without further incident.

Light Road damage

County sheriff’s deputies took a report of criminal damage to a vehicle that was parked in the 2200 block of Light Road in Oswego Township Oct. 16. Police said someone spay painted the vehicle.

Identity theft

A Bristol Township resident told county sheriff’s deputies that someone accessed his bank debit card and then completed unauthorized transactions from his bank account. Sheriff’s deputies are investigating.

The Kendall County Board unanimously approved a new special use agricultural zoning Tuesday for an apple orchard and banquet hall, with several other amenities planned for the southwest corner of Frazier and Creek roads in rural Plano.

Larry and Pam Nelson are planning a banquet facility with a nano-brewery, a micro-distillery, a year-round seasonal festival with petting zoo, and production and sale of sweet cider vinegar for a 45.85-acre property at 15888 Frazier Road in unincorporated Little Rock Township.

In a report to the board, Mike Hoffman of Teska Associates, the county’s zoning consultant, states that the Nelsons are envisioning the project, called Cider Creek, to be similar to Kuiper’s

Family Farm near Maple Park.

“Activities planned for Cider Creek include apple picking, a pumpkin patch, a store and bakery, kids activities such as a petting zoo and train, and a cider mill with a nano-brewery and microdistillery,” Hoffman wrote. “A banquet facility is also planned in the future.”

Hoffman wrote that it will take “several years” for the project to be completely built, with the orchard and cider mill completed next spring, the store later in 2017 and the banquet facility in 2018.

“We did put quite a number of conditions on this,” Hoffman told the board.

Those conditions include noise restrictions, parking restrictions, and others. The Nelsons will also have to apply separately for liquor licenses for the brewery and distillery, Hoffman said.

Bravo on new county courthouse mural

Caring volunteers

Bravo! That’s our one-word reaction to the large mural that now hangs in the foyer at the entrance to the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville.

But we want to share more words of praise here for both the artist, Eulojio “Joe” Ortega of Sandwich, and the Kendall Arts Guild (KAG) who secured donations to pay for the painting and oversaw the project.

Ortega, joined by KAG members, unveiled the painting during a ceremony at the courthouse Oct. 4.

Ortega has painted a stirring, uniquely Kendall County scene that features a farmer with a team of horses harvesting a crop in a field overlooking the Fox River. Spanning the river is a steel box truss bridge, the kind that once spanned the river in Oswego and Yorkville more than a century ago. A cupola, much like the one on the

county’s historic courthouse building in Yorkville, appears across the river on the horizon.

Like any good work of art we believe Ortega’s painting will mean different things to different people. Many will look upon the painting and ponder the county’s history and growth, while others will enjoy the scene and rich colors.

Even if you don’t have any business at the courthouse, we encourage you to stop by and view Ortega’s work.

And, if you see Chief Judge Timothy McCann or any members of the KAG thank them for having the imagination and vision to use public art to bring some badly needed historic character to the courthouse. The painting serves to convert a largely overlooked space into a focal point for current and many future generations to enjoy.

In Oswego, a Mr. John Pitt had the honor of casting the first secret ballot under the new system, although not without a few problems that entertained bystanders. Rank wrote: “He [Pitt] is a very enthusiastic, quick, and nimble man. When starting for the booths, someone said, ‘Do you know how to fix the ticket, John?’ ‘Yis,’ said he; on entering, instead of lifting up the curtain or drawing it to one side, he dove right down under it, coming up on the inside under the shelf, with which his head came in collision, making the sheet-iron concern tremble and jingle from bow to stern, but no damage resulted to either it or John’s head.”

Much, I suspect, to the relief of just about everyone in the U.S., not to mention the rest of the entire world, we’ll be heading to the polls in another couple weeks to elect a President, not to mention a host of state and local officials as well.

It’s probably understating the situation to say this has been one of the most unusual Presidential campaigns in the nation’s history as one of the nation’s two major political parties has found itself with a candidate that public opinion polls say most of the country intensely dislikes—and that includes a surprisingly large portion of his own party.

When we get to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8, we’ll find the usual set-up of voting booths arranged so we can cast our ballots in private.

We take secret ballots for granted, but that’s not what our great-great-grandparents found when they went to the polls. Not until 1891 were Kendall County residents allowed to cast secret ballots, marking the end of a voting process beginning thousands of years ago.

Although we like to think that democratic tools like voting are relatively modern processes, voting using ballots has a long and honorable history in both the East and the West. The ancient Greeks pioneered the use of ballots as early as the 5th century B.C., using

Retired Army Sgt. Brodick G. Richmond has already been through much in life, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, being wounded in battle, then coming home to a second battle with brain cancer.

But now he and his wife, Terrica, have one less burden to bear as they were presented with a mortgage-free home in Yorkville’s Autumn Creek subdivision on Friday on behalf of PulteGroup, the subdivision’s developer, and the Military Warriors Support Foundation.

The gift is part of the housing developer’s Built To Honor program, and all expenses of building and decorating the home are being covered by the company along with its trade partners, according to a company spokesman.

In addition, the Yorkville City Council unanimously agreed to waive the various fees for the home. The home is expected to be completed next spring, according to PulteGroup.

The Richmonds currently live in Naperville, but were welcomed to Yorkville with open arms in a ceremony at Green’s Filling Station Park in the subdivision, complete with the Yorkville

Police Department, Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District, the Yorkville American Legion Post 489, and students from Yorkville schools greeting them.

Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski joined State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, who served in the Marine Corps, Greg Salinas, PulteGroup Illinois division president, and Andrea Dellinger of the Military Warriors Support Foundation in speaking at the ceremony.

Richmond joined the Army in 2006 and was serving a tour in Afghanistan in 2008 when a 108mm rocket struck his mortar squad. He sustained numerous injuries and was awarded the Purple Heart. After coming home from the military, he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

The couple knew that they were being considered as winners of the home, but did not know they won until they pulled up to the ceremony Friday.

“We pulled up, and ‘What the hell?’”

Richmond said, laughing. “We won a free home. Yes, indeed.”

Richmond said he was excited to own a home where he, his wife, and his three young daughters, who they are in the process of adopting, can live.

“I own a piece of the rock,” he said.

“That’s what it’s all about right now.”

The MWAH! Performing Arts Troupe gave a 90-minute performance at Plano Middle School on Monday, Oct. 17.

The program focused on true-story issues including teen suicides and other forms of self-harm, child abuse leading to abusive teen and parent relationships, alcohol and other drug abuse, and stereotyping based on skin color and cultural and economic backgrounds.

The presentation featured Plano Middle School choral members with the troupe in a song written in memory of one of the first graders who died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting nearly four years ago; a recognition of seven Plano student heroes and several others who recently have excelled in various school-related competitions; and an energized dance finale involving Plano students and several school staff members who rehearsed with the troupe earlier on Monday.

The program was followed by a 45-minute debriefing-type discussion session focusing on issues presented and how they relate to Plano Middle School students and their families.

The essence of the teenage MWAH! troupe (acronym for Messages Which Are Hopeful!) is real life stories, combined with contemporary music, lots of audience interaction, and a range of emotions. A common thread is choices and the importance of making the right ones.

Coordinating the troupe’s visit to Plano was Chris Cooper, a social worker with the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative, and Mark Heller, Plano Middle School principal.

The not-for-profit troupe is an affiliate of the Chicago Area Project, a grass-roots service and advocacy program, which is part of an Illinois-wide community services network targeting at-risk youth and their families. Further information about the troupe is available at mwah.net

WHEELER: This is one of my biggest frustrations about my time in Springfield. As a member of the House Appropriations General Services Committee, I expected that we would work through the budget in tremendous detail looking for ways to make cuts to balance the budget. Those discussions never took place. Instead, a budget was produced by the House Democrats and the appropriations committees were effectively disbanded. I am open to making across the board cuts if we can’t actually negotiate specific cuts that will start to close the budget gap.

Do you support any part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda? Explain.

WHEELER: The Governor has whittled down his agenda from more than forty items to just five.

Those five items are: term limits, redistricting reform, work comp reform, property tax freeze, and pension reform. I support all five and look forward to bringing about these solutions to help Illinois become a more fair and competitive state.

BURD: I am vehemently against most of the governor’s agenda, especially right-to-work laws being passed at the municipal level.

Unions helped to create what was once a BURD: Illinois today is spending 28% less on core strong middle class and we need to support services than it did in 2000, according to the unions, not destroy them. I am against term limits because I have seen how long it takes executive director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability in Chicago. The misap- new aldermen and legislators to understand

the scope of their powers and learn to use them effectively. We have term limits already – it’s called elections. I do tentatively agree with the idea of imposing a tax on consumer services, but it would have to be in addition to raising the state income tax back to 5%.

Overall, I think that Gov. Rauner’s agenda has been devastating to Illinois. I have heard him comment that government should be run like a business; if he ran a business like this, it would be bankrupted. Even his wife’s non-profit sued him, according to news reports.

WHEELER: I will be voting for the Republican nominee, but will not be campaigning for him. I believe him to be the better choice over Hillary Clinton. I am focused exclusively on my own race and getting Illinois back on track.

WHEELER: While there are several infrastructure items that will provide value to the constituents of the 50th District (Full interchange at Rt. 47 & I-88, Metra extension to Kendall County, intersection improvements at Orchard Road & Rt. 30, etc.), I don’t expect to see the necessary financial support from the state until we get past the budget impasse. Until then, my top priority will continue to be to create Illinois jobs for Illinois families and reduce the property tax burden on local taxpayers.

Our extremely high property taxes make it difficult for families and seniors to afford living here while also driving up the cost of doing business which, in turn, puts a damper on local hiring. A growing economy and a vibrant job market will lift our state and the residents of the 50th District.

BURD: There are several, but I would like to mention two: First, several of the municipalities – Yorkville, Oswego and Montgomery – are looking at going together to build a water treatment plant that would use the Fox River to provide drinking water to residents in the municipalities. When I was mayor of Yorkville and president of Metro West Council of Government, I served on an area-wide committee that was investigating the fact that our fresh water reserves are shrinking as we use up water from our aquifers and from the Great Lakes. Water usage is going to become

Do you support a tax hike or hikes to balance Illinois’ budget? Explain.

REZIN: For many years, hard-working middle class families in Illinois have dutifully paid their taxes, only to watch corrupt politicians spend it with reckless abandon. As State Senator for the 38th district I have pushed to rein in government spending, and I will continue to do so. Before we talk about any new revenue, structural budget reform must be accomplished, and that will continue to be my focus.

How can the state cut spending to help reduce the deficit?

BENSON: As your senator, I will work to develop a system to evaluate existing government programs. Illinois needs to cut waste, including redundant services. With so many levels of government there’s too much red tape. Illinois needs to fix our fiscal problems, including pensions and the budget. This will save money as well as make our state a more attractive place to do business in and reduce business concerns about instability.

Ultimately, we need to grow our economy.

This is an important issue where both sides will have to make compromises; parties shouldn’t just disagree and walk away from the table. We’re already seeing results from the 2011 Worker’s Compensation reform. One issue we need to fix is not all Insurance Companies are passing on to the purchasers these savings and we need to make sure these savings are passed on. I support an increase in minimum wage.

REZIN: I know that there is broad support in the 38th District for issues like term limits and fair maps. I am supportive of ideas like these.

Do you support a change in the school funding formula?

BENSON: YES. Modernizing our school formula is something we have talked about for too many years without meaningful reform.

From both sides of the aisle we heard “This is not the year.” Our children need a first class education, with more school funding, and less of a reliance on property taxes. In Illinois, the zip code determines services to

our children. As a life-long educator I know the importance of education. I support an evidence-based funding model based on regional conditions and student needs that takes into account the cost associated with delivering quality, researched-based programming with real local control. One size does not fit all. I also support creating a two-year funding cycle with year ahead budgeting. I personally understand the need.

Education has been forced by the state budgeting process to make expenditure decisions before state funding decisions are final.

State budgeting has to support local decision making budgets, especially in regards to personnel decisions, which is normally about 80% of the budget. This change can be made without a tax increase, but it will require additional revenues. We should first work to cut waste, including redundant services, and to grow our economy by investing in businesses and workers.

REZIN: Over the last several years I have served on the Education Funding Advisory Committee (EFAC), the Senate Education Committee, and most recently was appointed to the bipartisan Illinois School Funding Reform Commission. I believe school funding is one of the most critical issues facing Illinois today. It is vital to students in my district that Illinois schools have proper funding and that the school funding formula is equitable across the state. Every student must be a priority

What project in your district, unrelated to tax or budget issues, will be your top priority if elected?

BENSON: The first priority is to increase job opportunities. We need to develop jobs for working families so our middle class grows.

At this time the 38th district has a high unemployment rate. For example, LaSalle County ranks 7th highest in unemployment out of 102 counties in Illinois. There are three qualities needed for developing innovative business and residential districts; an educated and skilled workforce, open land, and

easy access. The 38th district has all three qualities. We should play to our strengths, which includes a highly skilled and educated workforce that can easily roll into jobs.

There are already examples of the intermodal transportation hubs, which have brought a mix of technical and blue-collar jobs into the district. We have open land, that purchased at fair market value, will provide areas of space that are needed for infrastructure and development. We have access to transportation/industrial corridors via interstate, canal, and railways. Also unique to our district are the eco-tourism areas due to state parks and conservation areas. We must remain diversified, remembering businesses, agriculture, utilities, education, and residential must function together. This will raise our tax base, lower unemployment, and increase buying power.

REZIN: I will continue to fight to rein in out-ofcontrol state spending and push for balanced budgets. I will do what I can to bring good paying jobs to our area, and work to reform our state’s broken school-funding formula to get more money to local students.

Do you support a tax hike or hikes to balance Illinois’ budget? Explain.

OBERWEIS: Illinois is already one of the highest taxed states in the nation. We must work to reduce the waste, fraud and abuse so prevalent in Illinois before we talk about taxes. We also must first pass the common sense reforms proposed by the Governor before we pass any tax increases. IF and ONLY IF we pass those reforms would I consider a temporary tax increase to pay down the backlog of unpaid bills.

A graduated income tax would be the best way I can think of to accelerate the exodus of small businesses and jobs from Illinois.

PIEROG: I oppose raising income taxes, property taxes, and the multitude of unfunded mandates imposed upon local taxing bodies without a revenue source to support the added cost of compliance. Unfunded mandates are one of the main drivers of high property taxes in Illinois.

Local governments must determine how to pay for these unfunded mandates, leaving fewer resources for local governments to perform their core mission.

How can the state cut spending to help reduce the deficit?

OBERWEIS: Unfortunately, there is little room in our stressed budget for anything but cuts. K-12 education takes up about 25% of our GRF budget and no one wants to cut that. Required pension payments will take about another 25% of our budget and the courts have not allowed any adjustment there, so that means the other 50% of the budget may be under the knife. But the most important thing is that we must pass the reforms so necessary to get our economy growing faster and creating more jobs so that we have a bigger pie to tax instead of trying to take an ever larger piece of a static or shrinking pie. That will not work.

OBERWEIS: Absolutely! The five remaining proposals from the Governor’s common sense reforms are: 1. Term limits. Essential because term limited legislators tend to vote in ways they believe are good for the state and good for their district instead of ways that are good for their own re-election. 2. Redistricting reform.

Take redistricting out of the hands of politicians and put it into an independent commission.

3. Lawsuit reform. Require plaintiffs to file lawsuits in the county in which the incident occurred, the county in which the defendant lives, or the county in which the plaintiff lives instead of in Madison County. 4. Property tax freeze and local control over whether or not to use PLAs. 5. Workman’s Comp reform to require that an injury must be job related to be covered

by Workman’s Comp. Rates in Illinois are double the rate in some of our surrounding states like Indiana.

PIEROG: While both sides need to turn down the rhetoric and start focusing on policy, I believe that the lion’s share of the blame belongs to Governor Rauner. By tying his Turnaround Agenda to the FY2016 budget, Rauner played a very dangerous game with the most vulnerable people in our state. Holding vital services hostage to accomplish a political goal is not

OBERWEIS: Yes. Vision 20/20 has identified the most cost effective ways to improve education in Illinois. Those suggestions should be carefully considered. State aide to education needs to be understandable. A foundation level grant for each student plus an adjustment based on poverty levels plus an adjustment for special needs students makes sense to me. Those criteria and amounts should be known to all.

PIEROG: Illinois has fallen short of its constitutional obligation to fund education, largely because our current system is too heavily reliant on property taxes. We need to modernize the school funding formula to make our school system fairer and more effective for all of our students. However, we must ensure that schools in middle-class areas, like many in my district, do not suffer reduced funding. This is unfair, and would place a greater property tax burden on suburban families. Ultimately we need to invest more funding into education. Modernizing our state school funding formula and investing in education will not only provide a better and fairer educational system, it could also reduce this property tax burden. I successfully fought to lower property taxes in St. Charles because

I’ve seen the hardship that high property tax burdens have had on working families, seniors, and people on a fixed income.

What project in your district, unrelated to tax or budget issues, will be your top priority if elected?

OBERWEIS: Term limits as mentioned above.

PIEROG: Many area seniors will want to remain living in their communities, and age in place.

Forecasts show that much of the increase in demand for affordable housing will come from seniors who live in State Senate 25. The St. Charles Housing Commission of which I am a member has already implanted a cost effective housing retrofit program, as well as compiling and distributing materials to educate aging homeowners on retrofit best practices and resources for completing necessary alterations.

PIEROG: I will support and vote for Hillary Clinton because I trust that she will have a steady hand on American foreign policy. I trust that she will fight for a society that is more just for all.

Plano cross country preps for Class 1A regional races PLANO RECORD The Reapers traveled to Lisle Community Park on Saturday for the annual Interstate Eight/Independents Classic Invitational. Herscher won the girls’ I-8 meet with 56 points, finishing ahead of Seneca (64) and Westmont (70) in the eight-team field. Plano finished eighth. The meet also includes four independent schools – Lake Forest Academy, The Willows Academy, Northridge Prep and Southland Prep.

For Plano, Rachelle Gomez was 27th overall in 23:33, while Linnea Collins was right behind in 28th place with a time of 23:36. Demetra Phylactos was 34th overall in 24:17 followed by Yali Chavez (25:01), Brooke Morgan (26:38), Sarah Roberts (27:54) and Marina Mercado (27:56).

Plano fell to Tolono Unity and Genoa-Kingston before falling a second time to Tolono Unity to move into the seventh-place game. Plano lost to St. Bede 21-15, 21-12. Eveline Chaidez was named to the All-Tournament team as she finished with 19 points including one ace, 42 digs and four assists.

Reed-Custer had possession to start the second half and used up nearly all of the third quarter clock with a 15-play drive that was riddled with penalties.

On fourth-and-2 from the Plano 18, the Comets were aided by an encroachment call to inch closer to the goal line. But after a false start penalty, Reed-Custer once again turned the ball over after an incomplete pass on fourth-and-10 with 1:52 left in third. Alex Chavez was credited with the pass coverage in that defensive stand.

After a lengthy spell without any scoreboard highlights, Ward took matters into his own hands with a 56-yard run to the Reed-Custer 19, and Ward was stopped at the Coaler 1 on his next run attempt. He then looked to Adeoti across the goal line and made the 1-yard toss for a 27-0 lead with 5:58 to go. Ward finished 10 of 17 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for an additional 71 yards on six carries.

“We started out strong, but that faded out. We were just going through the motions,” Ward said. “They were kicking everyone towards Jay, so it opened up for me. .. I tried to keep my arm warm and didn’t really feel [the cold]. I just felt it after the game.”

by Plano Coach Brad Kunz Reaper Family, Time flies when you are having fun. This being my 4th year as head coach, each year it seems if the football season moves along quicker than the previous season. Four years have passed since a very large group of student athletes walked through the door of Plano High School. This Friday night we will honor those seniors as they play their final home regular season game.

Over the past 4 years, these guys have been a part of a lot of cool experiences. Some of them have wrestled or ran track at state. Some of them have won a regional title in basketball.

Many of these guys have been on the sidelines for our two 4A playoff victories. They have worked hard both on and off the field. In the classroom, they have also been tremendous. We are currently sitting at a 3.25 team GPA - the highest we have had this late in the season. These seniors are also a part of the 2017 class who has the highest average ACT scores in school history. These past four years we have grown as a family, and it is my hope that our coaching staff has given these guys the best chance to be successful not only on the field, but for the rest of their lives.

Friday night not only are we honoring our seniors, but we have a very special chance to honor two of my colleagues and Plano graduates: Morgan Brown and Sue Killebrew. These women have done a lot for their students in their time at Plano, and now we unite behind them as they battle cancer. Wear pink to show support to these ladies! Also, at halftime, we will be honoring the 2006 state champion Plano Reapers as many of them will be in attendance.

It should be a fun senior night at Reaper Stadium. Hope you have a great week!

On Friday night in Braidwood, it was time for the Plano defense to show what it could do against Reed-Custer.

The Reapers made three stands in the red zone to hold the Comets scoreless through the first three quarters and help seal Plano’s 28-7 win over Reed-Custer. With the win, Plano improves to 6-2 and clinches its sixth consecutive playoff appearance.

“They held the ball a lot and we didn’t get a whole lot of drives,” Plano coach Brad Kunz said. “We made some big plays later on, but it wasn’t our typical game. It’s definitely the first time we’ve faced an option team all year. ... That’s kind of my favorite defense when we bend but don’t break.”

Plano, despite the win, also endured its share of frustrations – starting with the opening kickoff. Israel Adeoti appeared to return the long ball into the end zone, but a penalty on the Reapers’ special teams discredited the score.

Reed-Custer (3-5) seemed to have an immediate answer with a 77-yard pass play from sophomore quarterback Josh Loomis to Jaxon Hendershot to the Plano 16, but Loomis was sacked for an 8-yard loss on third down and the Comets were stopped short on a fourth down run attempt in a big tackle by Carlos Martinez.

Quarterback Tyler Ward worked through a few early glitches during Plano’s second scoring drive. In an attempt to avoid the sack, Ward worked his way into negative yardage while on the hunt for an open receiver and was eventually sacked for a 28-yard loss. After his next incomplete pass was nearly intercepted, Ward found Elijah Maisonet and the 6-foot-2 receiver threaded the Reed-Custer defense for a 50-yard touchdown for a 13-0 lead.

The Plano defense once again stopped Reed-Custer at the Reaper 19 before adding a third consecutive score – this time on a 6-yard run by Winter to give Plano a 21-0 lead to start the second quarter. Winter racked up 202 of Plano’s 493 total yards of offense with 13 carries.

UPHILL BATTLE Reapers shut out

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Unfortunately, the only reward for winning Friday’s Class 2A play-in game was a regional semifinal game against top-ranked Benet Academy in the Kaneland Regional.

The Plano soccer team opened the postseason Friday with a 5-2 win over No. 10 Sandwich to move the ninth-seeded Reapers into Tuesday’s clash. Benet, the top seed in the 10-team Wheaton St. Francis Sectional, closed its regular season on Friday with a 5-1 win over St. Viator to secure its second straight East Suburban Catholic Conference championship with a perfect 9-0-0 mark.

On Tuesday, Benet (15-1-2) shut out Plano 7-0 in the semifinal game to send the Redwings into Friday’s regional championship.

“We’re not going to be dropping back to 1A any time soon, so we can see what a top level opponent looks like for the future and where we need to go,” Plano coach Tom Dean said.

“They play a tough 2A and 3A schedule. They play with the best and they tend to beat the best. When it comes to height, we physically struggle to match up. Benet has some top-level speed and a pair of forwards that are real good on the ball and real good creating.”

Plano’s 11-9-1 finish ties a program record for wins in a single season, and the Reapers’ win over Sandwich was the program’s first as a Class 2A team.

Against Sandwich, the Reapers broke a scoreless game at the 30-minute mark with a goal by Ivan Alanis off an assist from Alban Hoti. Hoti scored an unassisted goal five minutes later, and Alanis added two more before halftime thanks to assists by Hoti and Bryan Arreguin.

Alanis’ trio of first-half goals established a new single season scoring record with 24 goals for the season, surpassing Adrian Cervantes, who scored 22 goals in 2012.

“They definitely played a much better game against us.

For the first 30 minutes, it was still 0-0,” Dean said. “We picked up four in the first half, and once we hit that fourth one, I think we were pretty confident from there on out.”

Sandwich added two goals after halftime before Alex Gonzalez added in the final score unassisted in the 73rd minute.

“We’re always excited to play Sandwich. Unfortunately, it’s a down year for them, but we look forward to it because the guys know each other,” Dean said.
