By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, said he’s warming to the idea of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States during a visit to a Vulcan Materials Co. facility near Sycamore.

Hultgren, 50, told employees at the facility at 15622 Barber Greene Road that he met with Trump recently, and although he didn’t give the Republican nominee a solid endorsement, he said there was “no one in public service” that he respects more than Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump’s running mate.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in November,” Hultgren said Thursday. “I think the good thing is people are paying attention. I talk about that a lot, how frustrating it is when people feel like elections don’t matter or ‘I don’t have to vote because my vote doesn’t matter.’

“I sense something different this time. I think people are paying attention and are motivated, maybe because they dislike one person or the other person so much, so it should be pret-

BRIEF Hastert seeks dismissal of hush money lawsuit

An attorney for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert asked a Kendall County judge Monday to dismiss a lawsuit filed by an alleged victim of sexual abuse seeking hush money payments, according to the Associated Press.

Hastert, 74, is serving a 15-month prison sentence for violating banking laws, after he was caught trying to pay $3.5 million to the Dennis victim, who says he was Hastert abused when Hastert was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in the 1960s and 1970s, according to the AP. The victim filed a breach of contract lawsuit in April stating that Hastert still owes him $1.8 million in hush funds.

Hastert now is residing at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota.

Attorneys appeared before Judge Bob Pilmer on Monday at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville. Another court date was set for Oct. 13 at 10 a.m., according to court records.

Hultgren’s first choice for the GOP nomination was Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. As for backing Trump, Hultgren said: “I’m getting there.”

Hultgren said he “appreciated” the process Trump has put together to pick a Supreme Court nominee.

He was less enthusiastic about some

of Trump’s other policy plans, including building a wall along the border with Mexico and a temporary ban on all Muslims entering the country.

Hultgren said that if a permanent border wall is what is needed to protect American sovereignty, he would support it. However, he said there might be alternatives to building a permanent structure. As for a ban on Muslims, he said that protecting the U.S. from radicals is important, but a ban was unrealistic.

“That’s never going to happen,” he said.

Brett May, Illinois sales service manager for Vulcan Materials Co., said the company appreciates the work Hultgren has done for the industry, including his support of the FAST Act, which provides $305 billion “for surface transportation infrastructure planning and investment,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Vulcan, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates, employs 7,000 people at 315 facilities in 20 states.

Hultgren faces Gurnee Democrat Jim Walz in a contest to keep his seat representing the 14th Congressional District in November.

It is hard to condemn sending a preprinted acknowledgment or commercial card which people often use. They are better than sending nothing.

For more personal acts of kindness, such as flowers or personal letters, a handwritten note is a reasonable expectation. It does not have to be long, one or two sentences will do nicely.

Same-day signup takes extra time; non-election services won’t be offered on Election Day

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette told the County Board that she will need to dedicate more resources at her office on Election Day, Nov. 8, for same-day registration, as new rules require same-day registration at all polling places.

Gillette said she is also in need of more election judges.

The board unanimously approved a measure this week that will allow Gillette to close the Clerk’s Office on Election Day this year and future election days for services unrelated to the election. Also, the Recorder’s Office will be open for half a day on those days

– from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., according to a resolution approved by the board.

Board member Scott Gryder was absent from the meeting.

Gillette said that during the 2014 general election, she and her staff were challenged because of same-day registration in her office.

“On that day, three Debbie people, plus myself, Gillette handled over 100 voters to register them and get them voted, as well as taking all of the calls from polling places, citizens, and whatnot that occur on Election Day,” she said.

“Well now, we have to do same-day registration in our office as well as in

all the polling places, and do our other duties, which are marriage licenses, notaries, tax redemptions. With the staff that we have, we cannot do the amount of work required of us.”

Gillette said she also needs election judges to help with registration at polling places.

“I need about 200 election judges, in addition to the ones we already have,” she said.

Gillette said she would do a “thorough job” in making sure that the public knows about the changed hours and services at the offices during elections.

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano attorney Peter L. Krentz will be honored in a “surprise” party at 1 p.m. Friday at his downtown office, 100 W. Main St. He is being honored for having served 60 years in Plano as an attorney.

But don’t let him know because it’s supposed to be a surprise. However, like so many surprises, the recipient is usually among the first to know.

City Attorney Tom Grant said a “surprise” party was planned for Krentz, but said he most likely knew about it already. “Everyone in town is invited,” Grant added.

Rich Healy, head of the Plano Chamber of Commerce, included the party in his regular report to the council.

“It’s supposed to be a secret

but like all good secrets, it’s not going to be a secret. He most likely already knows about it. A card was signed at the last Rotary Club meeting for him and he is a member,” Healy said.

In addition to this, the City Council members Monday approved a proclamation introduced

by Mayor Bob Hausler honoring Krentz for his service to the city and its residents. Hausler said Krentz was raised in Aurora, but came to Plano in 1956 to establish a law practice after receiving his law degree from Valparaiso University in 1956.

He has been practicing law in the city since then, Hausler said.

Krentz became Plano city attorney in 1961 and served until 1977 when the present city attorney Tom Grant was appointed to the position. Hausler noted that Krentz also acted as attorney for the Little Rock Township and for the city’s public library.

Krentz has served as director of the Community Bank of Plano

and the Plano Community Credit Union, a charter member and treasurer of the Plano Development Corporation and a member of the Steering Committee for Excellence in Education in Plano, and a longtime member and past president of the Plano Rotary Club.

His volunteering has not been confined to just the Plano area.

Hausler said Krentz has been a member and past president of the Valparaiso University Alumni Board, its board of directors, and recipient of the Valparaiso University Alumni Service Award.

Hausler said Krentz and his wife, Wanda Drees, whom he married in 1957, have four children – Paul Krentz, Anne Marie Organ, Cindy Krentz and Stephen Krentz – and 12 grandchildren.

“Peter has been a devoted citizen of Plano for many years and he has spent his professional career in service to the local community,” Hausler said, before he proclaimed Friday as Peter L. Krentz Day in the city of Plano.

something done could perhaps get that taken care of before or the day after the election,” she said. “We’re just asking for some assistance to work with us so that we can concentrate on the election duties.”

Board member John Purcell asked about the need during spring consolidated elections, noting that the voter turnout is typically low during those elections.

However, Gillette said officials never know for sure how many people will turn out to vote.

“Potentially, but we still have that same-day registration,” she said. “We don’t know what to expect anymore. In March, we had a turnout that wasn’t expected.”

What did we learn?

To the Editor: Now that the convention in Cleveland is over, what did we learn? Specifically the Republican Party does not like Hillary Clinton, not even a little bit. She was tried twice for crimes by speakers on stage and pronounced guilty by a sub-

stantial voice vote among the delegates.

Hillary Clinton for prison 2016 was a popular T-shirt.

The mother of one of the Benghazi victims spoke, condemning the Secretary of State. But strangely, not one Congressional member of the Benghazi investigating committee attended the convention. One delegate went so far as to pronounce Ms. Clinton’s sentence, that involved hanging, and got everyone’s attention, including the Secret Service. Got to love the passion.

We learned that the entire Trump family can give a speech, sometimes including parts of speeches from people they greatly admire. Hardly anyone even picked up on that. We learned from a celebrity speaker that you can tell if someone is Christian by the sound of their name. He said our current President doesn’t have a name that sounds very Christian.

We learned that Republicans can hold a grudge. Even after repeatedly disparaging the man’s character, wife and father, Sen. Ted Cruz can’t forgive and forget.

EAT. DRINK. ENJOY. WIN.

What a spoilsport. No endorsement for you, Donald Trump.

We learned that Donald Trump can talk and talk and talk. After breaking several times to inhale, he went on to tell us that crime will cease to exist on the day he takes office, guaranteed. We will also have the lowest taxes, ever. We will spend gazillions of dollars on rebuilding roads, bridges, airports and football stadiums. As a matter of fact he promised a new stadium for every city in America.

Lastly we learned that the Republican Party worked hard to expand their tent to include people not normally represented by the party. It was reported that there were about 18 delegates that represented people of color. Some spoke on stage and one family, the Banks, have been lifelong Republicans living in Bel Air, California. Mr. Banks and his family know the party speaks for them. Philip Bank’s son, Carlton, even showed Mr. Trump a dance move he hoped Donald would break out after his speech. He, along with everyone watching, were disappointed that no dance was performed.

Now onto the Democratic convention.

Hopefully Hillary doesn’t show up wearing one of those T-shirts.

‘There but for the grace of God...’

To the Editor: While the legislators and governor of the state of Illinois play their political games, it is the poor and vulnerable who, as always, will pay the price.

The social service agencies that have provided assistance to those who have fallen into difficult times, such as Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, are shutting down needed programs or closing their doors due to nonpayment by the state for past services and lack of funding for the present and future.

Starting them up again will be difficult.

There is a rising sense of despair. We should all remember that “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Let your state representatives know you care.

Barley and rye were also used for human consumption by being ground into flour, but they were also popular grains for processing into the beer so beloved by so many in that era when drinking water was mistrusted, and often for good reason. The germ theory of disease was still considered a radical hypothesis, so wells and outhouses were often adjacent leading to outbreaks of typhoid fever and other waterborne illnesses from which even the wealthy were not immune. Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, died of typhoid contracted in their London palace.

Gradually, farmers became aware that Illinois really wasn’t good wheat country. Wheat likes warm, relatively dry growing conditions, and while we all know Illinois does not lack for summer heat, dry conditions (except during drought years) are not what you find here. As the frontier kept moving west, those ideal wheat conditions were found on the Great Plains in a huge swath from Texas north to

the Dakotas. Improved transportation systems added to the climate soon meant that bread could be baked in regional cities and shipped to small farming towns cheaper than rural folks could produce it on their own.

But that didn’t apply to oats at all, not for more than a century after Kendall County was settled. In 1912, which was close to the high-water mark for oat production, Kendall County farmers harvested 53,000 acres of the grain, producing well over 2.5 million bushels to feed their own horses and mules, but mostly for market. By 2007, so few acres of oats were harvested in Kendall County that the U.S. Department of Agriculture didn’t even report them.

Why so many bushels of oats then and so few now? When oat production was at its height, farmers relied on horses to plant and harvest crops and then haul them to market. Today, gasoline and diesel fuel those activities, which have become entirely mechanized. And in towns and cities, where horses once hauled everything from passengers in streetcars to mail delivery buggies to the milkman’s delivery

Loyal readers recall that I have a keen interest in how farming has evolved during the past century or so.

And as this time of year rolls around, nothing illustrates the change in farming and farm culture more than the virtual disappearance of small grains in the farming cycle.

Small grains are ancient in origin and were (and in some areas still are) vital parts of the farming process. But not here, and not now.

Defined as cereal grains – wheat, oats, rye, and barley – small grains are, like their cousin, corn, the seeds of genetically modified grasses that humans have relied upon for food for thousands of years.

Drive around the countryside this time of year and you’ll still see a few small grain fields turning a beautiful golden color in the summer sun. But today’s occasional fields of oats and even more rare stands of wheat are pale examples of what farmers planted and grew here a century ago.

Instead of fields of small grains, you’ll see extensive fields of soybeans, a crop that was as rare here in the 1920s as wheat is today, interspersed with huge fields of tall corn swaying in summer prairie breezes.

Why the change, why the evolution? Because times change as does the use to which crops are put. Back in the early 1800s when Kendall County was settled by pioneer farm families, small grains were absolutely necessary for survival. Wheat was harvested and ground into flour either on the farm or at one of the new gristmills that were rapidly popping up along every county stream whose bed had enough fall to power a waterwheel.

Oats, on the other hand, were the fuel that powered the horses and mules that were the backbone of power on the farm and in the transportation industry of the era. Granted, oats, too, could be ground into flour or they could be otherwise processed for use as oatmeal and other purposes, but their primary use was to feed the mil-

wagon, hydrocarbon-fueled machines have replaced the millions of horses that once did those tasks.

By 1900, the nation’s total horse population reached an estimated 24.1 million, with just under three million in cities. In cities with more than 100,000 population there was roughly one horse for every 15 people, varying from one horse for every 7.4 people in Kansas City to one for every 26.4 in New York City. And those horses required millions of bushels of oats for food. The nation’s horse population peaked about 1915, and from then on thanks to the advent of dependable, economical automobiles, the horse population declined by about a half a million animals a year. Along with that decline, the need for oats similarly declined.

Not that folks back then were sad to see horses go, of course. In Chicago in 1900, the city’s 82,000 horses deposited between 1.2 and 2.4 million pounds of manure and 20,500 gallons of urine in stables and on city streets every day.

In addition, a contemporary expert estimated in 1900 that three billion flies – each a tiny airborne disease factory – hatched in horse manure every day in U.S. cities. It was little wonder automobiles and trucks were welcomed by public health experts of the era.

So the realization that wheat grew better farther west, the disappearance of the horse, and the evolution of Midwestern farming to specialization in either raising grain or livestock led to the annual harvest of small grains and all that it meant to our farmer forebears, both socially and economically, gradually becoming mostly a thing of the past here in the Fox Valley.

The change accelerated as the U.S. transitioned from a largely rural to an overwhelmingly urbanized nation.

And so today, you can drive around Kendall County and still see small stands of small grains here and there.

But the “amber waves of grain” that once were have been almost entirely replaced by corn and soybeans. I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad, but it’s certainly a big change.

Illinois Speed Awareness Day: Ask an officer

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois, including those in Kendall County, recognized Wednesday as Illinois Speed Awareness Day, promoting safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists throughout the state.

We had a few “frequently asked questions” for our local law enforcement officers about speeding, and they obliged. Responding were Yorkville Police Officer Patrick McMahon, Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Frank Pavlik, and the Oswego Police Traffic Unit.

Here are a few of those questions and answers:

What is the most common excuse you hear from motorists you’ve stopped for speeding? How about the funniest you’ve heard?

McMahon: “The funniest are the

ones where people are describing their bathroom emergencies in detail. Those are generally the funniest, and a lot of times they’ll go into detail about what their emergency is, and it’s just too much information.”

“The one I’ve been hearing a lot lately: ‘I was just passing somebody and forgot to slow down after I passed.’ I’ve been getting that one a lot. Or, ‘I was

Several weeks later I received a letter from this couple, thanking me for my compassion and professionalism. They also related they made it to the hospital safely and now have a healthy new addition to their family.”

McMahon: “I wouldn’t say that’s

directly related to speed. I tend to see the cellphone issues causing more lane violations and rolling of stop signs or stoplights, because they’re not focused.

But I haven’t noticed a correlation between speeding and cellphones.”

Pavlik: “From my experience, cellphone use does affect the speed a driver

operates their vehicle. From what I have seen operators who choose to use their cellphones while driving tend to drive slower than the posted speed limit, and have trouble maintaining a steady speed. Cellphone use tends to effect drivers’ ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. Improper lane use and other erratic driving, similar to an impaired driver, are the most common effects of cellphone use while a driver is operating a motor vehicle.”

Will go to outdoor retreat PLANO RECORD Tommy’s Gift is in need of support as it attempts to enhance the quality of life of eight special needs and physically disabled residents of the Open Door Rehabilitation Center.

Tommy’s Gift has committed to these individuals to build a state-of-theart fully accessible backyard retreat at the resident’s home. The design of this raised deck will dramatically increase the outdoor living space and accessibility for the residents, many of whom are wheelchair bound. This will allow them the ability to freely spend time outdoors in a safe and controlled environment.

Tommy’s Gift is proud to partner with the Open Door Rehabilitation Center in serving adults with developmental disabilities. Many individuals have benefited from the efforts of this nonprofit organization and have enjoyed a sense of self-worth through independent living, training and employment.

ALR joins in at Fun Fest PLANO RECORD The American Legion Riders Post 181 from Sandwich participated with the Special Olympics 12th Annual Family Fun Fest at the Yorkville American Legion on July 16.

The biker run signup began at 9 a.m. with the first bike out at 10:15 a.m.

Eighty bikes participated with this run that began and ended at the Yorkville American Legion with stops at McKeown’s in Morris, Fat Daddy’z in Seneca, Starved Rock in Ottawa, and Rambo’s in Somonauk.

Donations will help Special Olympics continue in Kendall County with their talented and gifted athletes.

The bike run was led by coordinator Michelle Gardine.

Other events included a pig roast, face painting, games, silent auction items, and raffles. Several ALR members won auction items with their bids.

Poker hands were won by Barb Rife with a queen high straight for third place and Bob Lawrence with a king club flush for fist place. Cash prizes were awarded to Barb and Bob for their winning hands.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountyrecord.com A Yorkville man has been sentenced to state prison for downloading child porn and violating the state’s sex offender law.

Randall J. Anderson, 60, of Riverside Drive in Yorkville was convicted of child pornography and violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act and sentenced to 12 years in prison, according to the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Ten of those years are for the possession of child pornography, and he was also sentenced to a consecutive two years for violation of the Sex Of-

fender Registration Act, according to prosecutors.

Last December, Kendall County Sheriff’s Office investigators were processing Anderson’s address to confirm he was in compliance with the requirements of the sex offender registration law, according to the state’s attorney.

Anderson has three previous convictions for child pornography, prosecutors said.

“Detectives obtained and verified Anderson’s computer internet address.

Investigators later learned, through the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, that 100 images of known child pornography had been downloaded to that computer address,” prosecu-

tors said in a statement. “The investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant to search Anderson’s home and computer(s). Anderson was found to be in possession of numerous images involving children under the age of 13 years of age involved in various acts of sexual penetration or provocative poses showing the unclothed genitals of the children.”

“Evidence of child pornography was discovered on multiple media devices in Anderson’s home. Additionally, Anderson had previously denied employment of any kind on his previous sex offender registration compliance documentation but was found to be working with computers. He was therefore in

violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act regarding his duty to register,” prosecutors said.

Anderson was charged with multiple counts of possession of child pornography involving a minor under 13 years of age, all Class 1 felonies due to his prior convictions, prosecutors said.

Anderson was also charged with several counts of violating the Sex Offender Registration Act. In addition to his prison sentence, Anderson will serve three years to natural life mandatory supervised release, or parole, upon his release from prison, and is required to register with the Illinois Sex Offender Registry for his entire lifetime.

Many Plano starters return; Kunz takes over as offensive coordinator

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Playing the role of quarterback during last Thursday’s team camp, Plano coach Brad Kunz was intercepted on a deep pass attempt by his alert Reaper defense.

“I meant to do that,” said Kunz with a smile.

Now in his fourth season, Kunz finds himself in a new role, filling in at camp for returning quarterback Tyler Ward, who was taking a break to ice his shoulder on the sidelines during an especially hot morning practice. The Plano coaching staff underwent a significant shift this summer with the loss of offensive coordinator Boone Thorgeson, who accepted a job at Geneva High School for the upcoming school year. Kunz will now call the offense.

“I love it. I’ve been wanting to do this ever since I’ve been here,” Kunz said.

Plano will close out its summer camp with a challenge event against Batavia this week, capping off a busy schedule that also included a meet-up with Marengo.

“It’s been a really unique summer because we have a lot of starters coming back so we really feel like there’s less we need to cover in the summer, but we still want to get in as much work as we can so we’re prepared for the season,” Kunz said. “This summer was about the culture. Our seniors want to leave their legacy behind in the program by making things work the way they should work. I think that’s the biggest part of the summer – those seniors setting the tone. That’s been a good process and we’ve had some guys step up and be leaders. We’re really excited about the group we have.”
