Hastert wasn’t charged with child abuse because the statutes of limitation have run out since he coached at suburban Chicago’s Yorkville High School from 1965 to 1981.

Instead, Hastert pleaded guilty to violating banking law in trying to pay $3.5 million in hush money to one victim referred to in court papers as “Individual A.”

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Treasurer Jill Ferko thanked the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office for making officers available at the county office building in Yorkville following some harassing phone calls her office received from a county resident displeased with his property tax bill.

“It was greatly appreciated not only by myself but by my staff as well,” Ferko said.

Ferko told the county board during their meeting Tuesday morning that the sheriff sent deputies by her office

earlier this month shortly after the threatening calls came in.

The due date for the first installment of tax bills was at the beginning of June.

The county treasurer’s office does not set the amount owed on each tax bill but rather collects the payments from residents and distributes the dollars to Jill Ferko local taxing districts.

“I would like to thank Sheriff [Dwight] Baird for having his patrolmen come through our building periodically as well as having someone from his auxiliary staff on hand for several days in our office,” Ferko said.

“I do think that it calmed people down a little bit. They got an earful from a couple of taxpayers as well but it was greatly appreciated to have them in our building.”

Ferko says the Kendall County clerk’s office gets some calls every year from residents complaining to her staff, but this resident crossed a line.

She declined to go into detail about the nature of the calls but said that she was concerned enough to accept the sheriff’s help.

Ferko added that the person had been delinquent on his taxes and had a history with issues paying his taxes.

She mentioned that someone in the clerk’s office filed a complaint with the police after they received threatening calls from the same person. She said the person in question is not allowed in the county office building without a police escort.

County Board Chairman John Shaw commended the sheriff for his help, “especially when we have wingnuts calling up and threatening our girls’ lives.”

There are no income requirements and registration is not required. Any child 18 years of age and under may come to eat.

Children do not have to be eligible for free meals during the school year in order to receive free meals in the summer.

Safety project planned at Rt. 126, Ridge Road

By MATT SCHURY news@kendallcountynow.com The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to begin pavement work late this summer at Route 126 and Old Ridge Road that will allow them to safely remove two stop signs on the state highway.

David Broviak, studies and plans engineer for IDOT, says crews will raise the pavement at the intersection to give drivers on Old Ridge Road a better sight distance.

hicles will be able to more safely pull out of Old Ridge Road and make a right hand turn onto Route 126. IDOT will keep the stop sign in place for vehicles approaching from the south on Old Ridge Road, but they will remove the two signs on Route 126 so traffic will be able to flow freely.

IDOT did an improvement last year lowering the pavement on Ridge Road but after inspecting engineers were not satisfied with the results, according to Broviak.

“We were limited in how much we could remove because of the pavement thickness so this will make up for what we weren’t able to remove and bring it up so that we now have that sight distance for vehicles,” Broviak said.

Construction on the project should

take about a month after the project is let (made available for bidding).

“We are looking for a letting in either July or September,” he said. “The thought is that if it’s in July there is plenty of time to get the work done.”

But if the letting doesn’t happen until September the project would stretch over two construction seasons.

“It’s subject to the weather, and to lay asphalt you have to have a certain temperature,” he said.

The engineering estimate on the project was $120,000, according to Broviak.

“Just recently the funding was approved to raise the intersection to get the required intersection sight distance for the traffic from the left,” he said.

IDOT will alert drivers before the stop signs are removed.

“Before the switch happens, we’ll have message boards up warning the traveling public that the stop signs are being removed,” he said.

The new intersection at Ridge Road and Route 126 near the village of Plainfield opened in November 2014. The project swung a portion of Ridge Road north of Wheeler Road to the east, connecting it to a portion of Ridge Road (formerly Plainfield Road) north of Route 126.

The stop signs at Old Ridge Road and Route 126 have remained in place for almost two years since the project was completed because IDOT officials heard safety concerns from local residents about removing them.

Vietnam Wall will provide a teachable moment Area residents should mark June 29-July 3, 2017, on their calendars and make plans to stop by Prairie Point Community Park between Plainfield and Grove roads in Oswego.

What visitors to the park will find there on those days will be a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. For nearly 30 years, the Vietnam Moving Wall, which bears the names of the 58,315 U.S. servicemen and women killed in the war from 1959 to 1975, has been traveling the country to honor the memory of those who served and paid the ultimate price in our nation’s most controversial war.

Until now, the wall has been on display just twice in the Fox Valley area, both times in Aurora. The wall made its first appearance in 1988 in McCullough Park along the banks of the Fox River and, most recently, in 2013 on the grounds of West Aurora High School.

The Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, village of Oswego, Oswegoland Park District, School District 308 and Oswego Chamber of Commerce should all be commended for their work to bring the wall to the village.

We visited the wall both times when it was in Aurora and found it a profoundly moving experience.

left at the wall in Aurora in 1988 and again in 2013 were faded copies of newspaper articles reporting the story of loved ones who had grown up in Aurora and surrounding communities being reported either missing or killed in action.

We are especially pleased to see that School District 308 is a participant in the committee to bring the wall to Oswego. We are hopeful that District 308 students and staff will be as actively involved in presenting the wall as the students at West Aurora were three years ago. At West the students created a stirring display by covering the front lawn of the school and a large athletic field with American flags as a tribute to the fallen Vietnam veterans and assisted in keeping a 24/7 vigil at the wall while it was on display.

It was also heartening to see so many West students – born decades after the war ended – at the wall standing with Vietnam veterans, their family members and friends. With the passage of time and the memories of that difficult era in our nation’s history fading a bit more each day, it is of paramount importance that today’s students and their parents learn about the Vietnam War and the sacrifices that so many made on our behalf. The arrival of the wall in Oswego next June will present a welcome opportunity to do just that.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We are poorly led

To the Editor: It’s interesting that Barack Obama has renewed his attacks calling for more gun control in the wake of the recent Orlando shootings.

It’s also interesting that, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Americans’ access to firearms in general was never brought up as an effective way to counter terrorism. That’s because there are far better ways, ways that Barack Obama refuses to look at or acknowledge.

It seems inappropriate and insensitive to take this particular moment in time to advance a political agenda. But this shows his ability to spin and use the news media to advance his own political policies and views.

Actually, I would consider his comments tasteless, showing us once again he would rather advance his personal agenda before he fights anything global (like terrorism) in nature. His administration has done little to actually address global terrorism, but he certainly likes to talk about the little stuff he does by making it appear big.

Terrorism is alive, well and in a state of resurgence,

but it means nothing to this administration. Just look at the funds directed toward Obama’s immigration and amnesty agenda. Terrorism is distant from a financial perspective, making it clear to me what his priorities really are.

Sadly, for those who still turn on the TV to listen to him, all they will hear is “hate,” “fear,” and “prejudice” mentioned. We are a poorly led group, led by a president who is on his way out, yet still hankers for his own agendas and policies to be rammed down our throats until the day he leaves. And while doing that, he wants to leave a legacy that further divides us so that we cannot stand united when we most need unification.

To the Editor: The community supported the Kendall County Fair Association at the Annual Benefit Golf Outing scramble June 15 at Bliss Creek Golf Course in Sugar Grove with 51 golfers participating, 25 hole sponsors, betting on

two holes and a 50/50 raffle of which the winner Terry Goodyear donated a portion of his $288 winnings back.

Well, we made it through the rousing celebration of Father’s Day, and now we’re drawing a bead on Independence Day. The kids are well out of school, more warm weather is on the way, the swimming pools are open, and summer is officially here and has been for nearly a full week.

Here’s what The Old Farmers Almanac has to say about our shiny, brand new season: “The summer solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The timing of the summer solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point of the equator.

Familiar names on list of 1600s New Englanders I came across a list by accident – just reading sites on the Internet can be great fun. It listed the people who were the earliest settlers in the early 1600s. As I skimmed through it, I was quite surprised to notice how many had the same surnames as people we know as Plano settlers.

The important thing to remember is that just because a man named Smith was living on the East Coast in 1650, it does NOT mean that he is an ancestor of all the Smiths in Kendall County. Please keep that firmly in mind as you skim through this article.

Smith is a name that represents people from many different countries, so there are many different heritages here now.

On the other hand there is the possibility that someone will find a name that looks possible... and do the genealogy research to find that, indeed, you do have a connection to those early years of our country. The United States will be 240 years old on July 4 – and the Pilgrims landed 156 years before that – so many of these families have been residents of our country (that is, their families have been here) for a long time. Do you see any names you know well?

Here are just a few names I recognized from the book “The Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England”: ADAMS was a large family from the start. There were nearly three pages of family members named in the book, beginning with Alexander as the first father of the clan.

The ALDEN family will be recognized by many... John Alden married Priscilla MULLINS in Pilgrim times. Plano had a descendant of this family when I was a child. My mother used to stop to chat with Mrs. Horton now and again.

And she was very positive and very proud of her connections.

ALLEN has been a well-known name, both in New England and in Plano.

And there are 122 possible connections in the 1600s... I wonder if any really connect to one of the people we know?

APPLEGATE was also an early name – and if you are a regular reader, you will probably recall that “Auntie Maude” Henning was born into the Applegate family. And I’m pretty sure that it really does go back to 1600 New England, too.

The BARNES family was in New-Haven by 1644. And thirteen of those named Barnes had graduated from New England colleges by 1826.

Scotty EBERLY’s wife, Betty, was a daughter of the BIGGS family. Maybe they could trace their line to the 1600s.

VIEWS Kristy Lawrie Gravlin BURROUGHS was the name of a minister who was a victim of the Salem witchcraft infatuation. He was executed in 1692. But he probably had other family members who were in the area earlier than that.

COOPER family members were in Hingham in 1635. It was a good-sized family that may have spread all over the New England states.

CUMMINGS gave its owner, Isaac, a challenge as people spelled his name Comins, and Cummins, at various moments. He was an early resident of Watertown. Eighteen of the family attended New England colleges.

FAXON was a family from Braintree.

GIFFORD – John married Margaret TEMPLE in the mid 1600s.

GRISWOLD had his name spelled in a variety of ways (Greshold, Greshould, and Grissell among them) but 21 of the family managed to graduate with honors from Yale College.

HENING was in Newbury in 1674... now spelled HENNEN in New England.

HORTON was the name I wrote of earlier... the woman who was related to Priscilla and John Alden. When we visited her husband was always out working in the barn or yard. I don’t ever remember hearing him speak. But it would appear that he was possibly related to the family of Barnabas Horton. Six of the names were graduated from Yale, Harvard, Union or New Jersey College in 1828.

KENDAL was a freeman in 1647, and is ancestor (says the book) to most of the name (now generally written as Kendall) in the North East. Eleven college graduates and four ministers were part of the family.

LOBDELL, Isaac and John, were both made freemen in 1673.

LORD – John, Nathaniel, and Samuel carried the surname which existed from the earliest settlement. Twenty-four graduated in New England schools, with 18 of them attending Yale.

That finishes the first half of the book. There are many names in that first half that I did not include. Some I knew well enough, but decided that it was unlikely that the readers would know them.

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – The Sandwich City Council voted to buy the former Design Stairs office building, 1251 E. Sixth St., for a new police station at their June 13 council meeting.

The purchase price of the building and an additional 1.73 acres east of the building is $500,000, according to Mayor Rick Olson. He said the estimated amount to be paid for changing it into a police station has not yet been deter-

mined. The council is still studying various options.

But, he said, the total cost of the new plan would be much lower than the amount quoted for a new police station city officials were considering, which was estimated at $7.5 million.

The new police station was originally to be built at the southeast corner of West Center Street and Gletty Road.

The next regular council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 27. Both will be in the city hall annex, just west of the city hall/opera house.

The Newark Fire Department will sponsor water fights on June 25.

On July 2, the annual street dance and beer garden will be held on Jackson Street near Main Street. This year’s band is “Whiskey Romance” sponsored

by Newark BP. On July 3, the Newark Lutheran Church will sponsor an ice cream social at the church. July 4 begins with a flag raising at the downtown park at 8 a.m.

But I did find one man named Laurie...so once in a while there is someone who one does not anticipate to be on the list. Laurie is definitely a Scottish name.

Do remember that even though the name is yours, you cannot really claim this heritage until you have proven a connection to that very person.

Summer Solstice fest opens today; features craft beer, music

The annual Summer Solstice music and craft beer festival is returning to downtown Yorvkille this Thursday, June 23, through Saturday, June 25.

Plano resident Crystal Cavey was crowned Mrs. Illinois on May 20. She is the first woman from this region to win Mrs. Illinois and will compete in the Mrs. America pageant for two weeks in August.

Cavey is a lifetime Illinois resident and a graduate of Northern Illinois University. She has been active for the last 19 years in Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority Inc. Her personal platform is “Be Your Personal Best” of which she is the founder. This organization motivates, inspires, coaches and drives women and young adults to be better than they’ve ever been. She is also the “Ladies of Leadership” co-founder, an organization founded in 2015 that helps women connect with other women and grow through sharing stories and mentoring each other.

PLANO RECORD The Sandwich Park District has announced that World War II Army veteran Charles Rapp will serve as the 2016 Freedom Days parade grand marshal. The parade will be Saturday, July 2, commencing at 10 a.m. in Sandwich.

Rapp served his country from 1944 to 1946 as a Tec 5 in the U.S. Army.

Rapp is a member of Lewis P. Schultz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1486 and resides in Sandwich.

He is a well-decorated veteran, seeing combat in Ardennes, Rhineland, and the occupation of Central Europe.

Rapp was wounded in combat in 1945 and was awarded the following decorations and citations: Victory medal, American Theater ribbon, European/ African/Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, Overseas Service Bar, Army Occupation of Germany, Good Conduct medal and Purple Heart medal.

Rapp also was awarded the SS/M1 Rifle Combat Infantry Badge. His military occupation was a 511 Armorer,

‘Celebrate America’ concert set in Sandwich PLANO RECORD Families of all sizes and backgrounds are invited to attend what organizers are hoping to make an annual Fourth of July Sandwich tradition.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, July 2, the Sandwich Opera House will be the venue to host “Celebrate America Family Style,” featuring two professional singing groups who will present a mix of Americana, patriotic and Gospel spiritual music, together with readings and historical facts for the audience to enjoy.

The Lesters and the Chosen Ones, from St. Louis and Southern Illinois, respectively, are family musical teams that have been traveling the country for several generations presenting tight vocal harmonies and humorous anecdotes that provide quality entertainment for the whole family.

Plano Bible Church is hosting a free soccer camp from 6 to 8:30 p.m. the week of July 25-29.

The camp is for children that are 6 to 12 years of age. It will have coaches who will be teaching the kids soccer skills that are applicable to their ability.

Each day will include soccer drills, soccer games, snacks, singing and ministry time.

Members from Open Roads ABATE Chapter and American Legion Riders Post 181 from Sandwich rode to Antique Archaeology in LeClaire, Iowa, and the Feed Store in Malden, Illinois, on Sunday, May 22. This was a group ride for the two groups as well as visiting two stops in the Open Roads ABATE Summer Run Book and getting their books stamped by the two businesses. Group members enjoyed the beautiful weather, riding with fellow bikers, having lunch, and visiting Antique Archaeology and the Feed Store. The event was an overwhelming success with over 100 participants playing golf and sampling various wines. The event also included free appetizers, raffles, and music performed by Steve Bores. Lauren Chappell (Charleston) defeated Louise McCulloch (Wilmette) on the 16th hole to win the 2016 Illinois State Women’s Amateur Championship on Friday.

The tournament also put Loux on the same course as some of her future Illinois Wesleyan teammates, including Jordan Koehler and Jaclyn Halden.

“Playing with my teammates makes me so excited for the fall. We

all get along great and I know we will be friends on and off the course,” Loux said.

Loux’s next challenge will be the Youth Classic at Weibring Golf Course in Bloomington-Normal June 26-29. In 2015, the Youth Classic attracted 385 of the world’s top junior golfers.

The Illinois Wesleyan women’s golf season opens with the Olivet Fall Invitational on Sept. 3-4 in Marshall, Michigan.
