Proposed sewer extension could open up 1,685 acres

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com A proposed sanitary sewer extension was presented to Plano City Council members Monday night by John Frerich, president of Walter E. Deuchler Associates Inc., of Aurora.

When completed, it could open up 1,685 acres of land for development, he said.

Phase I of the interceptor sewer line was discussed by the Committee of the Whole on Monday. The portion to be built first would consist of 9,004 lineal feet of 24-inch sanitary sewer mains, starting from east of the Menard’s facility on Eldamain Road.

The line will extend south to the backside of the Menard’s land and travel west and then north along the west side of Menard’s, toward Faxon Road.

Frerich said the interceptor line will be extended north to Galena Road, opening up 1,685 acres of land for potential development.

The cost of the construction has been estimated to be $3,293,308, he said. But he expects the final amount to be less.

The total cost estimates including $98,800 for contingencies, $25,000 for financial and legal costs, and $329,000 (10 percent of the construction cost) for the design and construction engineering will bring the total estimated project cost to $3,746,108, he said.

The project would be funded with a 20-year loan from the Illinois State Revolving Fund program at an interest rate between 1.76 and 2 percent.

He said the city would be obligated to make semiannual payments of $114,090, or a total of $4,563,600, over the 20 years. This would mean the

By MATT SCHURY mschury@shawmedia.com Sprucing up the Kendall County Historic Courthouse is on the county’s agenda this summer. The Kendall County Board unanimously approved a few capital projects earlier this month for the aging structure in downtown Yorkville.

The approved projects include replacing three windows, repairing brick on the facade of the courthouse and installing a new NEC phone system redundant processor. The total estimated price tag for the work is $44,500 and should come from the capital improvement fund.

“These items have been on the socalled five-year plan, I mean the windows are getting to the point where we’re going to have to board them up if we don’t do something and they’re just falling apart,” County Board member Bob Davidson said. “This is just part of having an old building that we got to maintain.”

He added the decision to preserve the courthouse was made a long time ago and now the county has to maintain it.

“I’d like to spend the money in other places but we’ve pushed the pencil about as far as we think we can go,” Da-

Board member John Purcell, who chairs the county board’s finance committee, said they have $50,000 budgeted in that capital improvement fund for the projects. Purcell said they will most likely have to go out to bid on replacing the windows, which is estimated to cost around $32,500.

The brick work improvements are estimated to cost $5,000 and the replacement phone system processor is estimated at $6,500. Purcell said that the county’s facilities management director Jim Smiley could move forward on those projects.

He said his firm has completed the design and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency permit and planning submittal documents.

If the Plano City Council approves the project at the next meeting, Frerich plans to submit the application to the IEPA in June with hopes of receiving approval of the plans in August.

The city would advertise for bids in September and hopefully open and award the bid in November, he said.

Frerich said they would expect to receive final loan approval for the city from the IEPA in January 2017, start work on the project in February, and be completed in November 2017.

$50K in TAP funds gets unanimous OK

Bart Olson, Yorkville’s city administrator, said construction could begin as early as August or September of this year or possibly as late as 2017. City officialas are now working through property acquisition and the project is slated to be bid in June or July. From there it is estimated to take about one to one-and-a-half years to complete the project, according to Olson.

The funding for the project is slight-

ly outside the guidelines for the TAP funds, County Board member Dan Koukol noted. The county’s guidelines state that TAP dollars can only be used to construct paths along county roads or state highways.

However, Koukol said despite the fact that this was a municipal road, he felt the funds were appropriate for the project.

“Our idea was not to go into subdivisions and build sidewalks, it was to stay on main thorough-ways that have a safety issue,” Koukol said.

Fran Klaas, Kendall County’s highway engineer, added that the intent of the TAP funds is to build trails that would connect neighborhood and trails in municipalities.

“So this Kennedy Road path is one of those types of projects,” Klaas said. “It doesn’t really fall within the technical guidelines of how we had initially put the TAP funds together, but I believe it does meet the intent of that program.”

Klaas suggested that the board may want to look at expanding TAP funds for use beyond state and county highways.

“Do we want to consider these types of facilities along other major or minor collectors regardless of whose jurisdiction the roadway is?” Klaas said. “I think this is a good thing.”

The Push for the Path recently received another push, this time from Kendall County. The county board on May 17 unanimously approved awarding $50,000 from the Kendall County Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds to the city of Yorkville to help build a multi-use trail along Kennedy Road from Route 47 east to Mill Road near Oswego.

“Ten-zip, very commendable,” County Board Chairman John Shaw said shortly after the unanimous board vote was recorded.

The Transportation Alternatives Program was started a few years ago and allows the county to provide financial assistance to government entities that apply for funds to construct multiuse trails and sidewalks in the county.

County Board Jeff Wehrli said the proposed Kennedy Road trail is in a high-traffic area and will serve to increase safety for pedestrians.

“There is already a substantial amount of money out there that has

been raised to be able to promote this.

I, for one, am very happy to be able to hopefully help the group,” Wehrli said.

He added that the need for the trail is underscored by the tragic death of a local woman along Kennedy Road. Darlene McCue, a 46-year-old mother, was struck and killed by a pickup truck in July 2009 on Kennedy Road while she was riding her bike. Police say that the accident could have been avoided had there been a trail along the road.

Push for the Path is a not-for-profit organization created in the wake of McCue’s death to raise funds to build the 2.72-mile trail. A groundbreaking for the 10-foot-wide path was held on May 7.

The organization, formed by private citizens, stepped up a few years ago to fill funding shortfall between the anticipated cost for the trail and available government funds. In February 2012, the cost for the trail was estimated at $1.7 million. Yorkville received a $1.3 million grant to fund it, and the remaining amount of $357,000 had to be privately raised. So far, Push for the Path has raised over $230,000, according to the group’s treasurer Lynn Dubajic.

Metra line would benefit users and motorists In announcing two weeks ago that they would resume work on engineering and environmental studies to extend Metra commuter rail service from downtown Aurora into Kendall County, Metra officials appeared to want to place the financial burden for the project squarely on Kendall County and county municipalities.

In a prepared statement, Metra Chairman Martin J. Oberman said of the local officials, “They clearly understand the financial demands that will be facing them and I look forward to working with them in the future.” While in another prepared statement, Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno said, “We are humbled that local officials are so convinced of the value of Metra service that they are willing to take on this challenge.”

Clearly, Metra’s top leaders – faced with billions of dollars of expenses to upgrade the agency’s existing infrastructure – are not overly enthusiastic at the possibility of having to divert any of the agency’s limited capital improvement funds to expand their service into Kendall County. The agency has

previously estimated the cost for extending the service into the county at more than $200 million. $200 million is indeed a big pile of money, but taxpayers wary of the potential expense to the county and county municipalities should keep in mind that the extension – if it is ever built – may well be eligible for a significant amount of federal funding, just as the agency’s extension of service to Elburn from Geneva in Kane County was a decade ago. That project, which cost an estimated $105 million, was funded by a portion of an $11.6 billion federal granted award to Metra by Congress in 2001.

Taxpayers should also place that $200 million estimate in context with the cost of other transportation improvement projects. Over the past few years alone the Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded well over $100 million in contracts to improve sections of four highways in Kendall County: Route 47 in downtown Yorkville; Route 34 between Oswego and Yorkville; Route 30 between Route 34 and Route 31 in Montgomery; and Route 71 in Oswego.

The vast majority of the funding to pay for these highway projects did not come out of county or local municipal coffers, but federal transportation funds allocated to the projects by IDOT officials, with the support of local state and federal lawmakers.

The local officials and taxpayers who question the value of extending Metra service to the county should consider that it would not only benefit current and future Metra riders, but also those who will never use it. The opening of a Metra station or two in the county would serve to take hundreds, and quite possibly thousands, of vehicles off already crowded highways daily as more commuters take the train to Chicago and other points east instead of driving already busy Routes 47, 30 and 34.

We’re sure county residents who now sit in the daily traffic backups on Route 47 at the Kane-Kendall county line each day or on Route 30 at Orchard Road in Montgomery would appreciate anything that would help reduce the number of vehicles that regularly use those highways, especially as the county’s population continues to grow.

Kendall County lucky to be battle-free zone Reflecting the week after Memorial Day, I guess we can consider ourselves lucky here in Kendall County that no one has ever, at least in historic times, died in a war here.

While the area was inhabited for thousands of years by descendants of the people who immigrated to North America from Siberia, there’s no evidence of organized warfare concerning those earliest inhabitants. Not that there couldn’t have been, of course.

In some of the historic photographs of Plano’s new 1913 depot (yes, that is the one that is still standing there) one can see signage over on the south end of the stores on the west side of West Street. Given the right photos, and good sharp eyes, you will see that there’s an “ad” for the Plano Garage.

It was on Main Street at about Bill Street, and on the south side of Main. The garage was an independent building standing there where we think of the bowling alley’s far end today. In the photo, there’s a man on the sidewalk, at the far east of the block, standing near the building that was the post office back in the day. He’s probably wondering what all the excitement is at the garage.

There are many cars and many men displaying the tasks that customers can have taken care of at the new garage. (That was probably a good thing as there were few who had mastered “shade tree mechanics” at that time.)

Then she laid down in her bunk and tried to hold on to the two little ones while she spent her time being very seasick.

Jim and Jack had a fun time exploring all the mechanics of the ship and getting to know people.

The inside story on city’s first auto repair garage

bullied them and illegally occupied their land. The worst of these incidents was the Indian Creek Massacre just across the Kendall County line in LaSalle County where 14 men, women and children were killed.

In Kendall County, the Potawatomi chief, Shabbona, and his nephew, rode like Native American Paul Reveres to warn settlers to flee, which they did.

But what happened here showed that while the Indians were angry about a lot of things, they didn’t commit mindless bloodshed. For instance, as they roamed the countryside breaking into and burning cabins abandoned by terrified settlers, a group of warriors arrived at the farm of William and Mary Harris.

The Harrises, with their seven children, had fled to Plainfield to await rescue by Illinois militia. But Mary Harris’ father, elderly Mr. Coombs, was severely afflicted with rheumatism.

In 1877, William Harris told Kendall County historian E.W. Hicks what happened: “There appeared no alternative but to leave him [Mr. Coombs] if they would save their lives, and to this he urged them. ‘Leave me to my fate,’ he said, ‘and save yourselves; I am an old man and can live but a little while at best.’ Taking what articles they could, with tearful farewells, they left him and hurried away on foot… Before sunset

the Indians were on the move, eager for scalps and spoil. They struck Harris’ cabin first, and Mr. Coombs gave himself up for dead; but having satisfied themselves that he was sick, they did not molest him.”

In an interesting historical sidelight, authorities eventually rounded up the Indians suspected of perpetrating the Indian Creek Massacre and put them on trial for murder at Ottawa, but the jury acquitted them because none of the survivors could positively identify the perpetrators.

The Black Hawk War was the end of conflict and near-conflict in Kendall County. But that didn’t mean no more soldiers died here. There are many stories about wounded and sick Civil War soldiers coming home to Kendall to die during and shortly after that horrible war. For instance, prominent Oswego attorney Wright Murphy was invalided out of the Union Army in August 1864 and died at home in February 1865. And Capt. Albert M. Hobbs of Yorkville, who was wounded during the war, died in 1872 after doctors unsuccessfully attempted to remove the bullet that had caused him distress for so many years.

When it comes to avoiding the horrors of warfare, Kendall County has enjoyed great luck, something we all can be especially thankful for this time of year.

Brother William was also a farmer and spent the majority of his time keeping up with the work there, but would come into town on days when he was caught up or when there was a special need for his skills. His two sons began coming along whenever they could.

Bob and Earl both learned a lot about mechanics between the garage and the farm problems that needed to be fixed.

The young man in front of the second car in the photo may be either Glenn or Don, the sons of Jim. Don, particularly, seemed to be talented at getting things to work and creating new methods when he could improve on the old ones.

The youngest of the four boys was Bob (or Bub as the family called him).

He was a rural mail delivery man, so his time at the shop had to be worked around his schedule in his horse and

buggy as he got the mail delivered.

This picture brought several cars out into the street so the photographer (who didn’t declare his name on the photo) could get a shot of how busy and hard-working the team was.

The building behind them probably looks out of place to those who know the early layout of Plano’s stores. It was inside of that building that they started and built up the business of auto repair and maintenance.

Then in early December of 1910, the family suffered a major blow.

The mother of the family, Elizabeth, as was very often the case, had been concerned about a “neighbor” who lived a bit away from them. (The Lawrie home was on the northwest corner of Charles and Bill Streets and is pictured in the “Plano” photograph book published by Arcadia with both grandparents standing in the yard.)

Elizabeth had packed up some food stuffs and taken them over to an ailing woman and then, after trudging both ways through the cold and wind, came down with a major cold and/or pneumonia. She died on Dec. 14.

Continued from page 8 was quiet, gentle and loving. My dad remarked about often on how supportive she was. He missed his grandma for the rest of his life.

Before the end of the month another event rocked the family. The mayor’s car was in their shop for an oil change, if I recall correctly, when a large overhead light bulb exploded and set the whole shop on fire.

Everyone scurried to get all the cars out and other important things like the tools. But my favorite story is how my great-grandfather James Brown Lawrie (then 71 years old) immediately headed for the cash register, a heavy old thing, and hefted it up

and out so that they didn’t lose cash.

That’s the way of a Scotch head of the household.

The shop itself and some of the tools were not so lucky.

But they soon had a plan. If you look at that corner today, you will see there is a cement “brick” (white cement that is) building that was built there. That’s where they moved.

I can remember being in the building when I was little. In fact I didn’t really know much of anything about the fire (other than dad always mentioned the car of Mayor Deering Steward being in the shop). I do remember how concerned dad was, and wanted me to be, about getting any grease on my clothes. And I remember the gas pump outside had that really neat “flying red horse” logo on it.

Fees parents pay to enroll their children in the Plano public schools will remain the same for next year, Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia told board members at a recent Plano School District 88 Board meeting.

The fees also include those paid for students to participate in extracurricular activities such as band, instrument rentals and athletics, as well as parking permits and some class fees.

“Over the years we have not made any major changes to the fee structure and this year is no different,” Garcia said in a memo to the board.

“Despite the rise in cost of services in almost every area, the district has remained committed to maintaining a constant fee structure over time,” he said, adding that the registration fee has not changed since the 2006-07 year and is not expected to change next year.

He said the USDA and the state of Illinois are forcing the district to increase breakfast and lunch fees by 10 cents. But no other fees are being changed, he added.

Breakfast will go to $1.10 from $1 in all schools. Lunch fee will increase to $2.50 for P.H. Miller, Centennial and Emily G. Johns schools, and to $2.60 for the middle and high school students.

A list of nearly 30 fees was brought to the board for review. They are expected to be approved at the June board meeting.

Garcia said Cunneen has been working with the district on its fiveyear financial plan.

He said every year they review the five-year projections on finances to see how they are doing. “The farther you go out the harder it is to tell, because we never know what the state’s going to do,” he said.

Garcia said an ad hoc committee consisting of board members Paul Heller and Jim Ward has been focusing on three financial commitments that were made more than a year ago.

They are to set aside a portion of revenue each year to abate taxes up to $1.3 million, maintain current programs and services, and closely monitor the fund balances that serve as contingency funds.

“After an initial review of the current budget, the district is on pace to meet all three goals and exceed expectations,” Garcia said.

Cunneen noted in his report to the board, “The district continues to set aside $1.3 million of revenue in order to reduce the bond and interest payment of Plano residents. The district also continues to offer outstanding classroom facilities and class sizes, a K-12 fine arts program as well as athletic opportunities that rival much larger school districts.

“Yet the biggest finding from this review process is that the district continues to be good stewards of the finances by closely monitoring expenditures as well as operation with the established budget.”

School District 88 fees unchanged for next year

Sandwich City Council hears chicken request Resident suggests city allow keeping of hens

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – Some residents attended the May 16 Sandwich City Council meeting to voice their interest in having a few backyard chickens.

At present, city ordinances do not allow chickens within the city limits and they’d like the council to consider updating the ordinance.

Eric Fletcher, who lives on North Latham Street, brought packets of information for city officials that told of other suburbs that now allow a limited number of chickens. He also brought a petition with 220 signatures he ob-

tained using the internet.

He suggested that roosters should not be allowed because they are too noisy, that chicken coops should be built following specific regulations, and that there should be a limit on how close the chickens could be to neighboring property.

Alderman Dave Fraser stated he wasn’t concerned about chickens, but worries about the predators, such as raccoons, coyotes and possums, that would be attracted to the chickens.

A member of the audience, George VanDee, said he was worried about the rabies the predators could bring into the city.

The matter will be studied and placed on the agenda of the Committeeof-the-Whole council meeting at 7 p.m.

Paraphernalia arrest Plano police arrested Hector J. Rubio Jr., 22, of the 0-100 block of South Anderson Street, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle in the area of Route 34 and Eldamain Road at 10:27 p.m.

May 24. Police said Rubio has been charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Three juveniles arrested Plano police arrested three male juveniles in connection with damage done to the playground at Emily G. Johns Elementary School at 430 Mitchell Drive in Plano on May 27.

Police said all three suspects have been charged with criminal damage to state supported property and were later released to their parents pending court proceedings.

Police said it is believed the same suspects were involved with a vandalism spree in the Lakewood Springs South subdivision be-

tween May 26 and May 27. Police said graffiti damage was found in park playgrounds and on houses in the subdivision. In addition, tires were slashed on several vehicles. Anyone with information concerning the damage is asked to call Plano police at 630-552-3121.

Cars damaged on Blake St. Someone spray-painted graffiti and slashed the tires on three vehicles parked in the 3500 to 3600 block of Blake Street in Plano on May 27, police reported.

Police said the graffiti was not gang-related and there are no suspects in the incident at this time.

In addition, police said someone let all of the air out of the tires on a vehicle parked in the 3900 block of Pratt Street, May 27.

Police ask anyone with information on these two incidents to contact them at 630552-3122.

The United Methodist Church of Plano held its Sunday School Recognition on Sunday, May 22.

All Sunday School staff, teachers and children were recognized for their achievements, projects and participation.

The children sang several songs during the worship service, Elena Garza and Paige Love received schol-

arships, and Jean McBride was recognized for 45 dedicated years for the Sunday School program. She is retiring this year and will be greatly missed (she has been the pianist during Sunday School for the last 10 years).

She was honored by Linda Oleson, Sunday School superintendent, with a collage of pictures during this past year and word art words of “Faith,” “Family” and “Friends.”

Police said Gilbert faces charges of driving 26-34 mph over the posted speed limit, driving on a suspended license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

DUI, cannabis charges County sheriff’s deputies arrested Ragene A. Sims, 22, of the 2800 block of Stonebridge Drive, Plainfield, after stopping her vehicle for

disobeying a stop light, speeding and improper lane usage on Isabel Drive at Route 34.

Police said Sims was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and unlawful possession of cannabis. Sims was also cited for disobeying a stop light, speeding, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Kaneland tops Plano in regional semifinal Reapers shut out to end season at 11-22

By JOHN BUTKUS sports@kendallcountynow.com The Kaneland baseball team advanced to the Class 3A Kaneland Regional championship game after starting pitcher Jake Violett led them to a 5-0 win over Plano on Thursday.

Violett was dominant for Kaneland (14-13), striking out 15 Plano batters.

The senior allowed six hits and only one walk, in the seventh inning.

“I was able to locate my off-speed pitches today and got ahead in the count,” Violett said. “Pitching is very important at this point in the season, including our relievers, who are some of our most important guys.”

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said Violett “pitched a heck of a game” against Plano (11-22).

“When you can limit the fielders to only have to make six plays on defense in a game,” that’s just great to see and it makes it easy for us,” Aversa said, adding, “Credit to Jake on getting the job done and our guys responded with no errors in the field and made some really nice plays out there for him. We just seemed to be clicking today.”

The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and had at least one hit in every inning except for the fifth. After scoring in the first two innings for a 4-0 lead, the Knights were unable to score another run until the sixth inning, where they added a run on three consecutive hits.

Kaneland advanced to Saturday’s regional championship and ended its season with a 6-1 loss to Marmion.

11 student athletes from Plano will continue careers

The Plano athletic department recognized 11 student athletes who will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, and the softball program led the way with three Division III commits.

Isabel Salas will play for Augustana College, Jenna Alsvig committed to play at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and Shannon Tierney will play for Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Salas and Tierney were selected to the Interstate Eight All-Conference team this spring. Tierney finished with eight wins on the mound and threw over 145 innings and a 2.41 ERA. Salas led the team with 45 hits and scored 27 runs.

“I’m excited for them. They’re three great girls who are going to do great things in life,” said Plano first-year softball coach Dwayne Love. “They were proud to be a part of what we were doing.”

Salas selected Augustana, which just capped a 16-22 season, and will join the Vikings as a pitcher and infielder. She plans to major in biochemistry and pursue a career as a nurse practitioner.

“I’m a utility player, so wherever they want to put me, I can work there,” Salas said. “I’m ready to take on the challenge, grow up, and play college ball. I’ve watched college ball my whole life on the TV when I was little, and now I’m playing college ball. I’m very excited.”

Alsvig, the Reapers’ catcher, pursued collegiate softball after being accepted at Luther College and reached out to coach Renae Hartl. She plans to major in occupational therapy.

“We clicked. I liked the program philosophy a lot, and their academic success,” Alsvig said.

Tierney, a pitcher, will join Rhodes College head coach Luke Wagner and his winning program. The Rhodes College softball team fell one game shy of the Southern Athletic Association conference championship game to finish 25-20 this spring.

“My travel team had a summer tournament in Memphis and we were looking at schools down there. It had everything I was looking for,” Tierney said. “Everything fell into place.”

Zach Tomac Four-time wrestling state qualifier for Plano Rylie Loux will join the women’s golf program at Illinois Wesleyan as she studies elementary education to pursue a career in teaching. Loux, a four-time state qualifier, finished ninth in state this past fall to close her high school career.

“I’m really excited,” Loux said. “I think it’ll be a lot more competition and I think it’ll be good for me to push my game to the next level with the college level. Hopefully I’ll see improvement.”

Arieanna Accidentale has committed to Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, where she will join the women’s soccer team under the direction of Josh Printz, who joined the Crusaders for the 2016 season after coaching at Northern Iowa.

“The new coach drew me in a lot because he came from a Division I school and he had that D-I mentality. He’s just a really good guy, and the program is going in the right direction,” Accidentale said.

Zach Tomac, a four-time wrestling state qualifier and All-State medalist, will continue his wrestling career at Central College in Iowa where he plans to major in business.

“One of my big decisions is if the team felt like family, because that’s what I’ve been accustomed to here in a small town,” Tomac said.

Although Tomac missed several weeks of his senior season with a broken hand, he returned to the lineup in time for the Class 1A postseason and

qualified for state as a sectional champion at 160 pounds. He expects to move into the collegiate lineup at 157 or 165.

“I’m going to be cutting some weight,” Tomac said. “I have two books from their lifting program and my other days I’ll be at the gym working out and getting my weight down.”

Austin Stewart will join the Aurora University football team where he’ll work to break onto the field as a fullback with the Spartans. He’ll study special education.

“I felt like it was the closest program to what we have here [at Plano].

I feel at home there,” Stewart said. “I know they’re lacking in my position, so hopefully I can go in and go there and leave my mark and be ready to go.”

Marcus Ramirez will play basketball at Waubonsee Community College and Rachael Duffy will join the Chiefs’ women’s volleyball team.

Dahveed McKinney will play basketball at Culver Stockton in Canton, Missouri.

SUCCESSFUL TRIP TO STATE Plano’s 4x200 relay takes 2nd, Adeoti named All-State in 100 dash

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Plano boys’ track and field team capped the season with a state runner-up relay and an All-State sprinter last Saturday in Charleston.

The 4x200-meter relay team of sophomore Mauricio Perez, junior Jeremiah Murff, senior Davion Cole and junior Israel Adeoti raced to a second-place finish with a time of 1:28.60. Plano edged out Cahokia (1:28.88) at the finish line, and finished behind champion Morgan Park’s winning time of 1:27.62.

“Mauricio shot out of the blocks and ran the fastest he’s run all year. We were ahead the entire time in our heat so we knew we had good things coming,” Plano coach Rob Wegley said. “Cahokia was out in lane seven and was ahead of us the whole time, but when our anchor, Izzy, took the handoff Cahokia was still about 20-25 meters ahead of us. Izzy caught up and got them right at the finish line. We knew we could be top three, top four, but it was really cool to see them finish second.”

Adeoti added a second All-State medal to his collection with a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash. He clocked in a time of 10.97 in the finals, after winning his prelim heat on Friday with a time of 10.87 seconds.

“It was his second and third times running the 100 dash all year, so it was an unfortunate start to the season for him, but it shows a lot of resilience for him as an athlete,” Wegley said.

“He had a great attitude and he bounced back. He’s a junior, so he’ll be back next year with a lot on his mind, looking to break the school record in the 100 and come back and place higher at state.”

On Friday, Plano competed in three relays and a pair of individual events. Michael Marshall raced in the 400-meter dash and finished seventh in his prelim heat with a time of 50.54. The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Sebastian Esparza, junior Ryan Jernigan, Adeoti and Marshall finished fifth in their heat in 3:28.56.

“Our 400 runner, Michael Marshall, PR’d at state and he’s a junior so that gives us hope that he’ll be under that mark again and going after the school record,” Wegley said. “Our 4x4 competed hard, but unfortunately needed a PR of a second or two to make it into finals. They ran well, and they seemed satisfied. Just being able to run on that stage was a great thing for them.”

Earlier in the day, the 4x100-meter relay team of Perez, Murff, Marshall and Cole did not finish after an issue with a handoff during the prelim race. Marshall recovered with a strong finish in the open 400-meter event, and the others turned around with a solid finish in the 4x200 relay to advance to Saturday’s finals.

“That was a great thing to see as a coach,” Wegley said.

Plano will return a strong group of athletes for the 2017 season, including six of the seven state qualifiers.

“We’re graduating some great talent in the field events, sprints and distance. It will be hard losing Tommy Brown and his leadership, Christian Estrada in the high jump and Alexian Saavedra was a great leader for the distance squad.

We’re going to miss them,” Wegley said. “It’s crazy how many juniors, sophomores and freshmen make up our varsity team.

They have a lot of potential going forward.”
