New retirement date for police chief

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com A new retirement date for Plano Police Chief Steve Eaves has been set for July 1, according to a resolution approved March 21 by City Council members.

Eaves had intended to retire more than three months earlier, but announced later that he would be postponing the date because of a possible conflict on how long he was a police officer in Plano.

would be March 27, which would have given him 30 years on the job in Plano.

He was appointed police chief when he was just 26 years old in 1989.

“I was the youngest chief in Illinois at the time,” he said.

Eaves first was hired as a police officer in PlaSteve Eaves no but stayed there for three years before leaving to take a job as a police officer in the city of Batavia.

After three months at Batavia, he returned to Plano, where he applied for

the chief position and was appointed to fill the vacancy. But because he left Plano for a brief time to join the Batavia Police Department, he said there was a possibility this could affect his retirement benefits, so he decided to postpone the retirement.

He will continue to serve as Plano chief until the new July 1 date. He has not announced any definite plans for retirement but said he will be staying in the area.

Mayor Bob Hausler has not given any indication when he plans to appoint a new chief or who it might be.

Landfill ban, lack of recyclers make getting rid of old TVs not so easy

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Old-model CRT (tube) TVs are posing a growing problem for public officials in Kendall County who say they are getting calls from frustrated residents who want to recycle them but can’t because recycling vendors have stopped taking the old sets.

To make matters still more complicated, state law prohibits TVs from being placed in the trash.

Aaron Howe, an administrative intern for the village of Oswego, said the old TVs will not be accepted at the village’s Recycling Extravaganza set for Saturday, April 23. The annual extravaganza is the largest recycling event in the county.

Referring to the problem of recycling the old TVs, Howe said, “It’s really challenging for the village, it’s something that we get a lot of calls about and we are definitely interested in providing that service, we just have to find a way.

From the village’s perspective we have residents looking for it, but we don’t recycle the televisions as a municipality.

It’s kind of out of our control. We have

to find a vendor that is able to do it at a reasonable cost.”

In 2012 Illinois banned tube TVs from being placed in landfills. Marlin Hartman, Kendall County’s solid waste coordinator, said the new television market then changed as high definition, flat-screen TVs dropped in price and became popular.

Best Buy stores used to take old TVs for a fee, according to their website.

However, the retailer has stopped accepting the TVs since it is prohibited under Illinois law from charging a fee.

Thrift shops also won’t take tube TVs. Goodwill’s website indicates it no longer accepts tube TVs and Caring Hands Thrift Shop in Yorkville also doesn’t take them.

Hartman said recyclers used to get payments from manufacturers to take the TVs. Those subsidies still are available, but they are based on the weight of the electronic items, he said. When recyclers hit a certain weight threshold, the manufacturers no longer have to subsidize the disposal of the TVs. “Once they paid for ‘X’ amount of pounds, their obligations are done,” Hartman said. “The whole bottom of

this market has fallen through just within the last year. A lot of us saw it coming. It’s just one of those things that you say, ‘Well, maybe it won’t happen.’

Howe adds that the weight threshold set for this year was hit in January.

“My guess would be that they just had so many [TVs] sitting around that when the year rolled over they were just not able to collect as many as they anticipated,” he said.

Hartman says he believes the manufacturers have a responsibility for the old TVs. “The manufacturers say the end-oflife responsibility is for the consumer who purchased it and most environmentalists are saying the typical individual doesn’t have the resources to do that. You [the manufacturer] know now to demanufacture it better than somebody else,” Hartman said.

Since vendors stopped taking the old TVs, some people began dumping them off on the side of the road as well as at municipal sites that once took them.

Hartman says he’s seen the TVs on the side of the road and he used to pick them up and take them to a recycler in

Hartman says recyclers used to take the TVs and reuse the glass. In fact, he said e-waste recycling was a booming industry for a while. Now, with flatscreen TVs being popular, the glass, which contains lead, is no longer in demand. In order to be repurposed, the lead has to be removed from the glass.

“There are very few smelters that can separate that lead from the glass,” Hartman said.

Tube TVs were banned from landfills because of concerns about the lead leaking into the ground, said Aaron Rybski, environmental health services director for Kendall County.

“There is a lot of lead in these tube TVs and it’s just a lot of nasty stuff that they ultimately have to dispose of. It’s getting rough. There have been a lot of businesses that have been closing down and the landscape is changing.”

Hartman adds that as long as you don’t break the TV up, they can sit in a closet or basement without any health concerns.

“If you break the tube then you’ve got a problem,” he said.

Selmer edges Koukol in GOP county board race Absentee ballots from primary now counted

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Political newcomer Diane Selmer maintained her lead over incumbent Dan Koukol to win the Republican Party’s nomination for a seat on the Kendall County Board in District 2 after mail-in, absentee ballots were counted Tuesday night.

Selmer topped Koukol by just 15 votes after all absentee ballots were tab-

ulated by the Kendall County Clerk’s Office and Aurora Election Commission. The final unofficial results including all absentee ballots show Selmer with 3,081 votes to Koukol’s 3,066 votes.

Tuesday was the cutoff date for those absentee ballots from the March 15 primary election to arrive in the mail to be counted.

It appeared late on election night that Koukol had won the nomination by 10 votes with all precincts reporting in District 2, including precincts counted by the Kendall County Clerk’s Office and two of three precincts counted by the Auro-

However, once the third Aurora precinct’s results were reported the day after the election, Selmer pushed ahead of Koukol by the slim margin of 17 votes. The Aurora Election Commission finished counting mail-in votes later Tuesday night and posted the results on the agency’s website.

winning the GOP nomination were Matthew Kellogg of NaAuSay Township and Tony Giles of Oswego. The three will face Democratic incumbent Elizabeth Dan Koukol Flowers and Kristine Heiman, who both won their party’s nomination running unopposed.

Selmer is making her first bid for election to the county board. Last year she ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Oswego Village Board.

Koukol has served on the board since 2010.

Fun time was had

To the Editor: The Plano United Methodist Church Education Committee, together with Plano Hometown Lanes, conducted a “Bowl for Fun” afternoon on Sunday, March 6, at Plano Hometown Lanes in Plano. Participants from three local churches bowled two games of “crazy bowl,” enjoyed the food and soda, won prizes, and socialized with their friends.

Prizes were given to those that bowled a strike or a spare with a colored headpin.

A big thank you to Plano Hometown Lanes for the great outing, providing the facility, and being fun to work with; local media for their promotion of the event; area churches for encouraging church members to participate; Pat Morris and Gerri Henze for their help and support; and the people who made it all happen. A fun time was had by all.

Cause for concern

To the Editor: There should be a serious cause for

concern on Eldamain Road.

There have been two instances this week where people’s impatience has resulted in poor decision-making while driving.

Not only putting themselves in a more dangerous spot, but also putting others around them in one, too.

Both instances occurred between the YMCA and Galena Road, and both involved vehicles making illegal passes (and speeds in excess of 80 mph) either on the shoulder or by utilizing the turn lanes at Eldamain and Galena.

And this isn’t the first week I have noticed this; it’s continued to occur since the completion of Eldamain.

Impatience clouds these people’s minds, and even when vehicles are traveling at 50 mph (in a 45 mph zone), these people still find that inexcusable.

If those people who did this on Monday, March 21, and Friday, March 25, are reading this, perhaps you’ll give more regard to everyone else around you and utilize the legal methods for passing on Galena Road or Ashe Road instead.

A 2012 state law banned old tube TVs from landfills and most electronics stores, waste haulers and recyclers are no longer accepting them.

That leaves consumers in Kendall County and across the state in the lurch when they want to get rid of their old TVs. That a growing number of residents are frustrated by their lack of disposal options and taking matters into their own hands is obvious if you drive along any of the county’s rural highways. Look closely and you’re likely to see old Sonys, Samsungs, Panasonics and more tossed from passing cars and trucks into the adjoining ditches.

Last year, the General Assembly

attempted to fix the recycling problem by passing a law, HB1455, which was intended to get recycling centers to take old TVs and other electronics again by increasing the amount that manufacturers must recycle or reuse on an annual basis.

But when Gov. Bruce Rauner signed HB1455 last July, officials with his office and the bill’s sponsor, State Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, acknowledged the legislation was only a temporary fix and further legislation is needed.

Catherine Kelly, spokeswoman for the governor’s office, told the Joliet Herald-News that the state’s prior electronics recycling law was “out of date and putting an undue burden”

on local governments. Referring to HB1455, Kelly said, “This bill gives local governments, manufacturers and stakeholders time to develop new regulations for electronics recycling.”

Based on what we’re seeing here in Kendall County, HB1455 has come up short – even as a temporary remedy to the recycling problem. County residents still don’t have a lawful, viable way to dispose of old TVs. More action needs to be taken and we would like to see one or more of the county’s four state representatives and three state senators come forward to take a leadership role in the crafting of further legislation that will provide a long-term remedy to the recycling dilemma. If nothing else,

passage of HB1455 last year proved that recycling is one issue that both Democrats and Republicans can agree on in Springfield.

As the governor and Democratic leaders remain at odds over the state’s budget and their minions in the House and Senate wring their collective hands, there is nothing to prevent State Reps. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego; Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield; Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego; State Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora; State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove; State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; or State Sen. Jennifer Bertino Tarrant, D-Plainfield, from taking positive action either individually or collectively to resolve what has become a recycling crisis.

So here we are living through the fifth Thursday of March, and looking forward to April Fool’s Day. As this whole global climate change thing accelerates, it’s hard for us here in Northern Illinois to tell whether weather is getting any crazier than usual, since crazy weather is pretty much the norm around these parts.

The good news, of course, is that it’s officially spring and has been for a couple of weeks now. The bad news is that Mother Nature is a well-known practical joker, which means don’t put that snow shovel away just yet. Soon, but not now – trust me on this.

Me, I’m enjoying trips out to the mailbox to empty out all the seed and gardening catalogs, which, in my opinion, are even better harbingers of spring than robins and daffodils. The trick is to separate the seed catalog wheat from the junk mail chaff. But even the chaff has some interesting things to say. And so, with little further ado, here are a bunch of things I might never have found out if I hadn’t opened all the junk mail that showed up in the mailbox out in front of the Matile Manse every day the mail carrier made his (or her) appointed rounds: Along with Women’s History Month, March is also National Flour Month, so you’ve got just one more day to celebrate.

Rotarians learn Plano students among top scholars Superintendent tells group that District 88 youth have high scores on MAP, honors and AP tests

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Dr. Hector Garcia, Plano School District 88 superintendent, told Plano Rotary Club members March 15 that his students are among the top in the area for academics and program participation.

Garcia noted that 51 percent of Plano’s students receive free meals, 8 percent pay reduced rates, and 41 percent pay full price.

But this diversity is the district’s strength, he said. The breakdown is, 40 percent Latino, 40 percent white, 10 multi-race, 9 percent black and 1 percent Asian.

Garcia also talked about students taking the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test, which is given nationwide. He compared Plano’s elementary student scores to students nationwide for their scores for the past two years.

He said the experts say that hitting the 65 percent growth is an outstanding number.

Plano’s first-, second- and

third-graders were below that number for the past two years, but in the second year, the fourth-graders hit 73 percent, the fifth-graders hit 81 percent, and the sixth grade hit 78 percent.

The seventh-graders hit 65 percent in the first year, and the eighth grade hit 69 percent in the second year.

“We just received a letter to come to a national conference downstate. They want to know how our kids are doing so great,” he Hector said.

Garcia Garcia said they are often asked about the high school students, including whether high school students who may have challenges at home can do well academically.

“We decided to see how they could do and challenged them in eight core honors courses and 11 AP [Advanced Placement] courses. These are the same tests that are given across the nation,” he noted.

“Imagine me telling you when you were 15 that I had an idea. I wanted

Since giving them the challenge, Plano’s high school graduation rate increased from 88 percent in 2012-13 to 93 percent the next year and 92 percent in 2014-15.

The number of AP tests taken went from 51 in 2012-13 to 195 the next year and up to 256 in 2014-15, Garcia said.

And they’re predicting more than 300 next year.

Interest in sports also has increased, he said.

“When I arrived here, they told me the kids were active because they were playing football. They still play football and we have a powerhouse team that we’re proud of. But not everyone plays football, so we found something for everyone else,” he said.

Garcia said they have expanded students’ participation rates in all types of activities. When he came here four years ago, only 68 percent of the kids were involved in some kind of activity. Compared to the state average of 50 percent, this was a good number,

he said, but one he was not satisfied with.

Jim Schmidt, athletic director, met with all ninth-grade students at the beginning of the year to discuss the importance of participating in extracurricular activities while also setting academic and participation goals.

Garcia said Schmidt will be surveying all 117 students that did not participate this year to see what can be done in the future to get them involved.

He noted that nearly 89 percent of the certified staff is involved in a sponsorship, coaching, or on a school committee to encourage student participation.

Garcia said the academic part is nice, but students are not coming in just for math and science.

On the issue of funding, Garcia said he does not believe the state’s funding of school districts will improve anytime soon.

He said Plano is in a solvent position and will maintain the highest Illinois State Board of Education financial rating.

He said the district will continue its academic progress without increasing costs or changing programs or services.

He said Plano offers music to its students at much lower costs than many districts, some of which charge up to $400. Plano charges $40.

“I asked the fourth-grade teacher if they collect the $40 from each student and she said ‘Well, I’m not really good at collecting fees. We just want them to play music.’”

Garcia noted that despite the Menards propety tax appeal challenge which cost the school district, the district will continue to abate taxes,

saving the taxpayers $1.3 million each year or $6.5 million over five years, he said.

He noted that Plano’s teachers have been recognized more often at the state level for excelling in their math and reading programs than ever before and they were number one in Kendall County last year.

Finally, Garcia issued a challenge to the Rotarians, by telling them they would love to have adults visit the schools and work with students in the Interact Clubs. The kids benefit from adults being connected with them, he said.

“If you just want to walk through our buildings and say hi to the kids, we’d welcome you,” he said.

Man gets 22 more years in prison Plano resident already sentenced to 45 years in multi-county crime spree SHAW MEDIA A Plano man has been sentenced to prison for trying to kill a man he robbed five years ago as part of a multi-county crime spree that ended with a murder in LaSalle County.

Luis A. Lomeli, 40, of the 12800 block of Route 34, Plano, and formerly of Aurora, was sentenced March 23

by Circuit Judge James C. Hallock to 22 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Lomeli was convicted Feb. 4 by a Kane County jury of attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony, armed violence, a Class X felony, and armed robbery, a Class X felony.

The 22-year sentence is to be served consecutive to the 45-year sentence Lomeli previously received for a first-degree murder conviction in LaSalle County.

According to Illinois law, Lomeli must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He receives credit for 989 days served in the Kane County jail.

“Mr. Lomeli’s crimes were violent, unprovoked and random. He committed these crimes because he

chose to place more importance on taking drugs than he did in the lives of other people. His poor choices and the ruined lives he left in the wake of these choices mean he most likely will spend the rest of his life in prison, a predictable outcome,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement issued by the state’s attorney’s office.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Bill Engerman, Sal LoPiccolo and Dan Weiler prosecuted the case.

Prosecutors presented evidence that on May 1, 2011, Lomeli, his girlfriend and two co-defendants were at a relative’s home in Ottawa and decided they wanted alcohol and drugs, but had no money. Lomeli, who originally was from Aurora, concocted a plan to drive to Aurora and rob someone.

The four drove in a borrowed car to a bar in the 1400 block of East New York Street, where Lomeli’s girlfriend was to entice a patron outside so the three co-defendants could rob him. When the girlfriend did not immediately return, Lomeli grew impatient and decided to rob a man

who left the bar as he entered his car, which was parked near Lomeli’s borrowed car.

Lomeli approached the victim and asked for a light for a cigarette, and then started to punch the victim. The co-defendants came over and joined in.

They took his money and then Lomeli held down the victim as one of the co-defendants stabbed the victim in the back 13 times with a knife. Security from the bar came outside and the defendants fled, leaving the girlfriend behind in the bar.

The defendants went to the nearby home of a Lomeli relative to clean up. They then purchased drugs with the money they stole, and drove to a home of an acquaintance in Montgomery with the intent of robbing another victim. They forced their way into the home, but were unable to get money from the homeowner and then fled back to Ottawa.

In Ottawa they purchased more drugs, and then beat to death the person who sold them the drugs, according to the state’s attorney’s statement.

PLANO POLICE REPORTS Burglary reported Plano police are investigating the burglary of a residence in the 3400 block of Allen Street.

Police said the homeowners discovered the burglary after they returned home March 27 after being away for approximately two weeks. Electronics and apparel were taken from the home, according to police.

Police said it is believed entry to the home was gained through a basement window.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police at 630-552-3122.

Oswego man arrested Plano police arrested Cameron T. Olson,

21, of Oswego, at a gas station convenience store in the 200 block of East South Street at 7:43 a.m. March 23.

Police said they were summoned to the business on a report of four suspicious people. Upon arrival, police said they determined that one of the four, Olson, was wanted on a warrant issued in Johnson County for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Police said Olson was additionally charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis.

Olson was taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending a transfer to Johnson County.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Aggravated DUI arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Aaron Ray Lage, 30, of the 4400 block of Little Rock Road, Plano, after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a rollover crash March 27 at 4:30 a.m. on Sandy Bluff Road at Rogers Road.

Police said Lage walked away on foot from the accident scene to a residence in the 16000 block of Rogers Road, Sandwich, where he entered another vehicle and drove back to a party that he had attended earlier in the evening. A family member then brought Lage to an area hospital.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Lage at the hospital on charges of aggravated driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespass to vehicle.

Police said Lage was taken to the Kendall County jail pending court proceedings.

Motorist arrested County sheriff’s deputies arrested Daniel Patrick Somerset, 29, of the 600 block of Briarwood Lane, Oswego, March 27 at 9:13 p.m. in the 1600 block of Route 25, Oswego.

Police said they pulled over Somerset’s vehicle for having an expired registration.

Deputies then discovered that Somerset was in possession of over 740 grams of substances containing cannabis, according to reports.

He was also cited for operating a vehicle with an expired registration.

Oswego. The victim told police that that after pulling over the driver of the other vehicle departed from the area without leaving any information. The incident remains under investigation, police said.

Curfew violation County sheriff’s deputies arrested a juvenile March 28 at 12:32 a.m. on Pomeroy Road at Stratford Road in Boulder Hill on a curfew violation.

DUI arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Oscar Armando Plata, 24, of the 1700 block of Mystic Drive, Plainfield, at 2:29 a.m. March 27 on County Line Road at Route 52. Plata faces charges of driving under the influence and improper lane usage, sheriff’s deputies said.

Police said they observed Plata‘s vehicle parked on the wrong side of the road with its lights on. He was found asleep in the vehicle.

To reach Plata, who was not responsive, police said they made a forced entry into the vehicle.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Michael John Perry, 35, of the 13000 block of Loveland Drive, Alsip, as he walked on the side of the road March 26 in the 1300 block of Route 30 in Oswego. Free throws earn schools money PLANO RECORD Heartland Bank and Trust Company recently donated over $2,100 to area schools through the Score with Heartland Bank program.

The program donated $1 for each free throw made at a high school varsity home boys and girls basketball game during the regular and post season. Donations this season were presented to local schools including Plano, Newark,

Somonauk and Sandwich high schools.

Giving up volleyball also allowed Martinez to visit home more and see her brother Anthony play with the Plano varsity boys basketball team. The siblings ended up winning regional titles for their respective schools within a couple days of one another.

Anthony helped the Reapers win the Class 3A Plano Regional title on March 4 with the 62-52 victory over Streator while Clarisa was a part of the ICC squad that won the Region 24 championship title with the 85-70 win over Parkland College on March 6.

While the 6-foot-5 Anthony will no doubt be a big part of Plano’s team in his senior year next year, Clarisa is still unsure where she will play next season.

She has received several Division-I and Division-II offers, but she is still deciding. She has three schools picked out, but still wants to visit a few more.

“I am both excited and nervous, but I can’t wait to see what the future holds,” Martinez said.

After a successful volleyball and basketball career at Plano, Clarisa Martinez went on to play both sports at Illinois Central College and has enjoyed a great amount of success over the past two years.

As a freshman, Martinez played both volleyball and basketball for the Cougars. As a sophomore, she decided to focus exclusively on basketball, and the sacrifice paid off. This past season, she was a part of the ICC team that played in the national championship game on March 19.

The Cougars, however, fell short of winning the title as they fell to Kansas City Kansas Community College in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, 81-59. The second-place finish was ICC’s highest finish since winning the national championship in the 2005-06 season.

The Cougars ended up 32-5 overall and 61-9 in the two years Martinez was at the East Peoria-based ICC. “We were initially upset we got second, but then we thought, ‘Why are we upset? We are second in the nation in our division,’” she said. “It’s really an accomplishment. What a great way to end my career [at ICC]. I loved it.”

In basketball at Plano, the 6-foot3 Martinez scored 1,038 points and grabbed 1,081 rebounds (first and only in the Plano girls program to do both) and posted 487 career blocks (eighth alltime in the state). She was also All-State Special Mention in Class 3A her senior year.

Martinez started off playing both volleyball and basketball at ICC. After her freshman year, she quit volleyball after helping the Cougars finish seventh in the nation.

Plano track team ready for shotgun start to outdoor season

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After a promising indoor season, the Plano track and field team will open its outdoor season on Thursday, hosting Sandwich, Hinckley-Big Rock, Somonauk and Newark. The boys’ squad finished four points behind champion Kankakee-McNamara in the indoor Comet Classic at Reed-Custer to cap the indoor season on March 19, running without two of its top athletes.

“More than anything, this year the kids want it. They’re driven,” Plano coach Kristy Lehner said.

Plano comes off a 2015 season that ended at the Class 2A state meet with the 4x200-meter relay qualifying in addition to Israel Adeoti in the 100-meter dash. Adeoti, now a junior, was part of that state-qualifying relay with returning sophomores Mauricio Perez and Dameon Russell and senior Davion Cole.

Ryan Jernigan (sprints/mid-distance), Jay Winter (sprints), Michael Marshall (sprints), Jeremaiah Murff (jumps), Brandon Sheehy (jumps/hurdles) and Sebastian Esparza (sprints) will add depth in addition to distance and mid-distance runners Alexian Saavedra, Jorge Aguilar and Brandon Littlefair.

“We have some good marks already and they’re doing really well. Now that many of them are juniors and seniors, they’re growing into themselves,” Lehner said.

The girls’ roster includes just 20 athletes this spring, leaving Lehner to make decisions about where to best utilize the talented athletes without overworking them. Newcomer Stephanie Zambrano leads the jumpers with Khiyana Magee leading the throwers. Newcomer Alyssa Dolan is taking an early lead in the sprint events with teammate Brielle Tucker. Yasmine Esparza, Jessica Prentice and Katie Rickerl are headlining the distance and mid-distance events along with Lindsay Hoalt, Rachelle Gomez, Daisy Mendoza and Sarah Roberts.

Chiefs feature local talent Kendall County represented well on record-setting WCC team

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com Three players from Kendall County were a part of a record-setting women’s basketball season at Waubonsee Community College.

Oswego East alum Julianna Wadsworth, a sophomore, and Libby Love and Jewel Hupe – two freshmen from Plano – were a part of the WCC’s team that finished 11th in the nation for the second straight year after Kankakee Community College defeated the Chiefs, 68-67, in the third round of the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament on March 18.

The Chiefs set program records for wins in a season (at 27-9) and won 18 consecutive games in the second half of the season. Against KCC, Wadsworth finished with a game-high 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Wadsworth’s huge highlight of the postseason was her 15-foot jumper with three seconds left that gave WCC a 57-55 victory over South Suburban College in the Region IV Division II District L Championship game. The basket sent the Chiefs to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament for the second straight year.

The NJCAA All-American Wadsworth averaged over 20 points per game, placing her in the top 20 nationally among Division II junior college players. Her steals this season placed her in the top four in the nation and her free throw percentage also ranked her in the top seven nationally. She was also the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Year and First Team All-Region and ended her career as the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1,211 points.

“I saw a lot of improvement from her,” WCC coach Jim Sury said of Wadsworth. “She developed a three-point shot, she can drive – she has a wide range of moves. She was definitely one of the top players in our conference.

She was a coach’s dream. She’s going to be missed.”

Love scored 10 points against KCC. She was named to the All-ISCC First Team after she averaged 16.1 points per game in conference action and led WCC with 52 three-pointers.

Hupe may see more playing time next year as a sophomore with the Chiefs.

“As the season evolved, she found

her niche,” Sury said of Hupe. “She didn’t get a whole lot of time in, but she definitely filled a role.”

So far, two more players from Kendall County will join the Chiefs next year – Yorkville’s Aynia McGowan and Oswego East’s Nay Nay Clark. Sury is still looking for players to complete the 2016-17 WCC team.
