Officers, youth go shopping Plano Wal-Mart also helps holiday effort

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Police departments in communities across the nation have been helping many less fortunate families through the “Shop with a Cop” program, so Plano decided to do the same thing, city council members were told at their most recent meeting.

Plano Police Chief Jonathan Whowell said Sgt. Norman Allison suggested the department sponsor the program, and Sgt. Aaron Smith and Patrolmen Anthony Joutras and Brian Rolls agreed to help. Also assisting at the store were Patrolmen Robert Patton, Robert Hernandez, Derek Stoch and Scott Hogan, and Investigator Gene Morton.

Whowell told city council members they had talked about doing this in the past but were not able to get the program together until this year. He said they talked to officials of Plano’s Wal-Mart store and the store agreed to donate $2,500 for the program.

Whowell said school officials chose 10 students, two from each of Plano’s five schools – the high school, middle school, and three elementary schools.

Also, two families received $500 each and two families received $250 each from Wal-Mart, he said.

When they arrived at the store last week, a police officer accompanied each student to help them with shopping and keep an account of the amount each had spent. At the beginning, some students wanted to buy big or expensive items, but were told by the officers that this would not leave them enough for other family members, so they changed their choices so no one would be left out.

To make it more interesting, some of the officers had their students keep track of what they had spent to sharpen their math skills. The officers also made sure every student chose gifts for all of his or her family members.

Whowell said the members of his department members donated their time for the event.

At the end of the evening, Whowell said it was a success and they are already planning to do it again next year.

District 88 OKs tax levy, abatement

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Property owners in Plano School District 88 will not have to pay taxes on $1.4 million of assessed property in the district for 2016, thanks to school board members abating taxes for the second year.

Board members at Monday’s meeting unanimously approved the tax levy for the 2016 year, on recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia.

They also approved a tax abatement on Garcia’s recommendation.

He said they restructured the bond payments to avoid passing along a tax increase to the community. To do this, they had to make a commitment to set aside a portion of their revenues each year to abate taxes. By using these funds to make the bond payments, the funds are not coming directly from the taxpayers.

This year, $855,000 will be applied to

the district’s 2006 Series Capital Appreciation School Bonds and $545,000 to the 2009 Series Limited School Bonds.

Last year Garcia told board members he would like to set aside $1.3 million to insure that they could continue with that promise, while maintaining current programs and services. This was a six-year commitment to abate $1.3 million each year. But this year, he recommended they abate $1.4 million, which received unanimous board approval.

The levy is the amount of taxes school district board members are asking the county to collect from taxpayers to fund the district for the coming year.

Garcia said the total EAV (equalized assessed valuation) of property in the district for 2015 was $171,359,156.

He said the county estimated new construction in the district during 2016 added $550,000 to the total EAV. The new construction coupled with assess-

ment increases on existing properties served to boost the district’s total 2016 EAV to $196,070,797, a 14.42 percent increase over last year. Garcia said the growth in the district’s EAV allowed him to ask for board approval to increase the abatement to $1.4 million.

“We’re hoping home values continue to go up,” Garcia said.

The breakdown for this year’s levy by fund is $7,840,000 for the Education Fund; $1,460,530 for Operations and Maintenance; $2,769,980 for Transportation; $98,000 for Working Cash; $450,000 for Municipal Retirement; $350,000 for Social Security; $196,070 for Fire Prevention and Safety; $1,000,000 for Tort Immunity; $1,568,566 for Special Education; and $196,070 for Leasing for a total of $15,929,216.

Board President Tim Campbell commended Garcia for keeping the levy at a rate that will continue to generate funds needed to run the district but also be good for the taxpayers.

He’s accused of misconduct at Dept. of Corrections holiday party

another state employee during the party. That discussion happened after a woman reported Anthony had touched her breasts.

Anthony then reportedly stated “he had done nothing wrong” and said he was a former state representative and “knew better.”

In one instance, a woman said Anthony pulled her arm to get her to dance. She was forced to stand because Anthony was “basically dragging her,” according to the state records. She told him to get away from her but he continued to dance with her, noting that her blouse appeared to be falling off, the report said.

Another woman said he came up to her from behind when she was sitting in a chair and put his arms around her and around her breast. When he did let go, he brushed against her breast. She said she didn’t know if it was intentional, but that it was “uncomfortable,” the report said.

Guests at the party said Anthony “acted intoxicated,” although they did not see him with a drink in his hand all night.

The Corrections Department on Friday said an investigation was launched and “immediate action” was taken as soon as they learned of the allegations of misconduct.

Anthony could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon.

He had announced his resignation from office June 17 of this year for the $120,000-a-year state job.

Coroner introduces chief deputy, talks of ‘moving forward’

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell told the County Board that she’s requested the badges of former deputy coroners, and introduced her new chief deputy coroner.

Purcell introduced Samantha Marshall, her new chief deputy coroner, to the board at the Dec. 20 meeting.

Marshall is a paramedic from Grundy

County, Purcell said.

Marshall said she has been a paramedic with the Coal City Fire Protection District for the past seven years.

She said she has also been a paramedic preceptor for Morris Hospital and a deputy coroner with Grundy County Coroner’s Office, and has also been a tech for autopsies for both Grundy and Kendall counties.

Purcell also addressed concerns brought up by county resident Todd

Milliron, who asked about the number of deputy coroners in Purcell’s office and about former deputy coroners’ badges.

Purcell said there are three people in her office right now: herself, Marshall, and a senior deputy coroner, Brian Leonard. Purcell said she sent out 18 letters to former deputy coroners requesting the return of their coroner badges and other property. She said she has received five badges back so far.

“So far everything has been running well, and we’re moving forward,” Purcell said.

According to an annual report presented to the board, the coroner’s office saw 284 total deaths during the past fiscal year, which ran from Dec. 1, 2015, to Nov. 30 of this year. Of those deaths, 254 were marked as natural, 19 as accidental, 10 as suicide and one as homicide. Purcell said most of the accidental deaths were drug overdoses.

Former 75th District State Rep. John Anthony was fired Dec. 7 from his position at the Illinois Department of Corrections after allegations emerged from several women who told investigators that Anthony had been saying inappropriate things and touching women at a party.

According to a redacted investigation memorandum dated Dec. 16, a report from a Department of Juvenile Justice employee alleges she was approached by a man wearing a Cubs jacket, who was later identified as Anthony, as she was going outside to smoke.

According to the report, the employee stated that the man made comments about her chest and buttocks. The report reflects the male then stepped to the side of the employee and inappropriately pressed his crotch into her left thigh and licked her neck.

The report further states she asked who he was and he said “John.” When she asked for his last name, he said that didn’t matter.

The report also states that, based upon statements from alleged victims who reported that they were not actu-

ally assaulted, no statutory offenses could be cited in the investigation.

Another report stated “while on the dance floor, ANTHONY [sic] was trying to ‘squeeze’ in on people dancing and trying to ‘grind’ on people.”

Anthony was assistant to the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he was making $10,000 a month after leaving his state representative position.

The 75th District that Anthony served as a state representative encompasses most of John Kendall County, includAnthony ing sections of Oswego, Plano, Yorkville, Plainfield and Joliet.

Nicole Wilson, media relations with the Illinois Department of Corrections, confirmed previously by email that “John Anthony’s employment with the Illinois Department of Corrections ended Wednesday, December 7th.”

The reports also say Anthony has not responded to requests for an interview from investigators.

“The IDOC does not discuss personnel matters and cannot provide any further information,” Wilson said in the email.

On Friday, she said in an email, “As

soon as we learned of these allegations of misconduct, we launched an investigation and took immediate action.”

The Corrections Department on Friday released records to Shaw Media after a Freedom of Information request was filed seeking information about Anthony’s firing, which also included a surveillance video.

Anthony was fired just five days after the Illinois Department of Corrections holiday party at the Wyndham Hotel in Springfield.

In one instance, which was caught on a surveillance tape, an Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice employee told investigators she was walking to an exit to go smoke when she was approached by Anthony, who put his arm around her and asked if she was a Corrections employee.

He then allegedly made the comments about her chest and buttocks.

Eventually, she asked him to leave her alone. That interaction was caught on surveillance video that was subpoenaed by the Corrections Department for its investigation.

“I am not be the only woman this happened to, unfortunately,” the woman wrote in an incident report.

That wasn’t the only reported instance of inappropriate touching that night, according to the records.

Several other women at the party told investigators that Anthony had been inappropriately commenting to and touching them as well.

Tom Skilling says

To the Editor: As a person with little background in science, I decided to educate myself on the issue of climate change since it has become a prevalent topic in recent years. I recently attended a talk on climate change (CC), with Tom Skilling as the keynote speaker. What I heard gave me a wake-up call.

Here are a few of the main points that were covered: • Mr. Skilling was a CC denier until he took a trip to the Arctic and began studying the research regarding CC. He now feels CC is a great danger to us all.

• The burning of fossil fuel (oil, natural gas, coal) is the cause of most climate change.

• Some of the effects of climate change (many of which we are seeing now, according to Skilling) are floods, droughts, violent winds, and dangerous rising sea levels.

According to Skilling, the vast majority of climate scientists agree

with Skilling that we are polluting the atmosphere and causing this dangerous CC. This should not be a Democrat or Republican issue. This is a major health concern that could have catastrophic consequences for us and the people that are going to inherit the planet from us.

The government needs to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry and invest those monies into clean energy.

We need to start listening to the experts, like Mr. Skilling, in the climatology field. Scott Pruitt was just nominated as the head of the EPA. He is a self-proclaimed climate change denier, without a science background.

If you do not agree with his position or his appointment, I encourage you to call your senators and voice your opinion, as they have the confirmation vote.

Over the past few weeks we’ve published some amazing stories concerning the continuing generosity of Kendall County area residents leading up to the Christmas holiday. We hope you didn’t miss them but just in case, here are just a few highlights from those stories: In the Oswego-Montgomery area, School District 308 junior high school students, Oswego Fire Protection District firefighters and the Oswegoland Optimist Club secured the donation of a record 7,500 toys, which were distributed by Optimist Club members and volunteers to homes with needy children within the school district.

In Yorkville, the Junior Women’s Club provided Christmas gifts to 1,200 children through this year’s Operation Santa, held for the first time at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry on Beaver Street. This year marks the 25th year the club has collected gift donations for local children in need.

Over in Plano, the Chamber of

Commerce organized more than 50 volunteers to assemble and deliver boxes of food to more than 300 city families for the holidays through the chamber’s Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas event, and in Sandwich the Franklin Mall Project, under the direction of the Sandwich Lions Club, provided groceries and gift cards for an estimated 250 local families in need, just in time for the holidays.

While it was heartening to read of the dedication of the many volunteers who put on these and other programs, it was also sobering to learn of the large and apparently growing number of Kendall County area adults who struggle daily just to pay their bills and put food on the table for themselves and their children.

Still, the hundreds of county residents of all ages who stepped up and generously offered their time and talents at this most busy time of year to help those less fortunate is indeed a very hopeful sign as we enter the new year.

Turns out the story of Robinson Crusoe was history’s first docudrama. Daniel Defoe got the idea for the tale when he heard the story of Alexander Selkirk, who quarreled with his ship’s captain and was marooned on a remote island for 52 months until a passing ship rescued him, presumably in a somewhat less combative mood.

A lot of folks contend it’s really hard to find a truly funny conservative comedian. And, frankly, they’ve got a point. But that doesn’t mean conservatives never took a stab at a sense of humor. The first real newspaper cartoons appeared in The Federal Republican, a conservative Washington, D.C., sheet, in 1814.

Great time to be a senior

To the Editor: Just about the time when the feelgood stuff starts to fade away after President Trump takes office, the nitty gritty stuff will come out. The Congress has some interesting material it has worked on for years and now has a willing participant in the White House to carry it out.

One of the first courses of action will come out of the House Ways and Means

Subcommittee on Social Security, headed by an arch conservative out of Texas named Sam Johnson (R-TX). His proposal is an effort to “save” Social Security for the next 100 years. Basically it comes down to a few reforms.

First, raise the retirement age to 69.

It’s now 67 for anyone born after 1960.

Next comes stopping all cost of living increases for anyone who made more than $78,000 a year starting in 2018.

The maximum Social Security payout for people in this category is a little over $31,000 a year. That would never go

up when this plan is adopted no matter how bad inflation gets.

Next comes the real middle class worker who made more than $50k a year but less than $78k. You will see a 28 percent reduction in lifetime benefits. If you made about minimum wage all your life, congratulations you will see a tiny increase in your benefits.

A small nugget of good news is that they may eliminate taxes on all Social Security payments. Considering the average yearly payout is about $16,000 a year, or an eyelash above poverty, this

is not going to impact many people.

So while on the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised not to touch Social Security, he never said Congress wouldn’t mess with it.

Next up, after eliminating Obamacare, is reformulating Medicare. The New Deal and the Great Society safety nets will be eroded over a four-year Donald Trump presidency. It’s a great time to be a senior citizen.

Christmas has run its course and Hanukkah is well underway. Now we can gird our loins in preparation to survive New Year’s Eve and all of those New Year’s Day bowl games.

The Matile manse has laid in adequate, we believe, provisions necessary for the coming of the 2017 New Year, including a couple of buckets of pickled herring, which everyone knows you have to eat the first thing in the New Year to assure good luck for the rest of the year.

We have heard that some area residents have taken to eating squid for good luck, but food with more than four legs, especially when those legs have suckers on them, is not part of the Matile lifestyle. We saw some squid in a grocery store once, and we couldn’t help but get visions of Kirk Douglas fighting for his life wrestling the giant squid in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Eating such a food item, could, we suppose, be termed poetic justice given the tussle the squid gave Captain Nemo (which backwards spells “omen”), but we’re not into poetic justice when it comes to food. And we like to stay away from omens altogether as a general rule.

Instead, late on Christmas Day, after the Bears’ game with that team from the District of Columbia that can’t figure out whether or not its name is a racial epithet, we turned to the gigantic pile of junk mail we had accumulated over the past month to see whether we could find recipes suitable for a New Year’s repast.

There were, of course, no recipes of value there (or it wouldn’t be junk mail, would it?). But we did uncover a batch of facts that would normally be useless, but which we found just right to fill up the 1,000 words that make up an average week’s “Reflections.”

So, with no further ado, here are a number of things we never would have found out if we hadn’t stuck a silage fork into our accumulated stack of junk mail to see what would turn up: If you got one of those really cool Cutty Sark or U.S.S. Constitution ship models for Christmas, you’ll be happy to learn that January is National Hobby Month.

Ladies, how do your lips feel, now that you’ve slathered them with seaweed? Yuck, you protest?

Well, it turns out there are more than 7,000 species of seaweed, and some of them harbor a gummy substance used in lipstick, soap, photographic film and buttons. You remember photographic film, don’t you?

Did you burn a Yule Log this year? If so, we hope you saved the ashes. Yule Log ashes were once thought to guard the house from fire and lightning, and were thought to have power to heal wounds and to make fields fertile – good, all-purpose stuff.

Animal, vegetable or mineral we used to ask to begin a game of 20 Questions. Turns out, though, that some animals and plants are so closely related it’s hard to tell them apart. The group of Euglena are microscopic organisms that scientists classify as both plants and animals. There are about 150 kinds of Euglena. The critters (or whatever) live in warm water.

You bought your kids Levis for Christmas, but do you know what denim really is? Do you care? Of course you do! Denim was first woven in Nimes, France, about 300 A.D. (Gauls in denim; way cool!) and was called serge de Nimes. In the late 1800s, Levi Strauss, a U.S. clothing manufacturer making heavy duty work clothes for miners and other laborers, decided to use heavy denim cloth to produce the first jeans. Bet you won’t find that out at Old Navy.

Paper money was invented by the Chinese. It was first tried in 812 A.D., and was perfected and in widespread use by 970 A.D. Deer live on every continent except Antarctica.

The smallest deer are Pudu, or rabbit deer, which live in the forests of western South America. A fullgrown Pudu weighs about 20 pounds and is about a foot tall. Maybe we could exchange our Whitetail population for Pudus. Hitting a 20-pound, one-foottall deer wouldn’t be nearly as bad as crashing into one of the antlered behemoths that regularly demolish autos on Kendall County roads.

Architect gives report on school conditions

ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Craig Welter, an architect with Cordogan Clark, told Plano School District 88 Board members last week that the district’s five schools are in good condition. But there are some systems that have reached the end of their useful service life and should be looked at soon.

He said they include paving, roofing, mechanical and electrical systems, and minor interior building components.

The total estimated cost of priority items is $2,300,000 and the total estimated cost of all work including the priority items is $5,855,000.

Welter said he and others from his firm conducted the Health and Life Safety Survey, which is required by the Illinois State Board of Education of all educational facilities in the state every 10 years. He said they must inspect each school site and the inside and outside of every building. The report must include a detailed description of each facility’s infrastructure, mechanical systems, electrical systems and any items that are deficient.

Welter said the inspections were done during August, October and November.

Plano Middle School at 804 S. Hale St. had the most costly priority items totaling $1,339,000. The majority of this cost was to replace the roof, which has reached the end of its useful life, Welter said. Replacement was estimated to be $1,330,000.

The other priority items, totaling $9,000, include a missing fire detector, strobe light and exit sign, and addition of an intercom. The non-priority items include $135,000 to replace the asphalt parking lot, $391,000 to replace 4,600 non-insulated windows, $45,000 to make a fitness area accessible, $7,500 to make a restroom accessible and $10,500 to enclose a stairway.

Centennial Elementary School at 800 S. West St. was next highest for priority needs estimated to cost $580,500.

They include three roof repairs at a cost of $340,000, $170,000 and $60,000, and $10,000 to replace a fire detector and install a call switch and intercom.

Non-priority items totaling $362,400 included $182,000 to replace 14 non-insulated windows, $136,000 to replace the parking lot, and up to $10,000 for eight other items such as replacing or providing switches, fixing a leaky pipe, replacing a water heater, and fixing problems with doors and frames.

The priority items at P.H. Miller School, 904 N. Lew St., total $349,000.

The cost of priority items at Plano High School, 704 W. Abe St., was estimated to be $70,000. This includes $60,000 to replace a roof and $10,000 to repair a roof parapet joint.

Non-priority items include $2,100,000 to replace a parking lot, $150,000 to replace sidewalks, $80,000 to resurface a tennis court, $75,000 to repair the gymnasium roof, $3,000 to repair a foundation and $1,500 to replace a switch.

Welter said there is only one priority item on the list for the Emily G. Johns Intermediate School at 430 Mitchell Drive – $2,500 for repairs to the front sidewalk.

Non-priority items are $5,000 for repairing cracked sidewalks and mortar joints, and $2,500 for sidewalk repairs at the bus drop-off.

He said the report goes to state officials for review. They may accept the report as is or note some items that should be changed. And the district may be eligible to receive life safety bonds to pay for up to 90 percent of the work, Welter said. He said many of the items will be taken care of by Bryan Appel, director of operations, and his staff.

To get the largest number of and most beneficial bids, Welter recommended the district advertise for contractor bids from January through March of 2017.

Plano Rotary honors students of the month PLANO RECORD

The Plano Rotary Club hosted Plano High School seniors Brittany Strause and Will Benson as December 2016 Students of the Month.

The Plano Rotary Club hosted two Plano High School Students of the Month, seniors Brittany Strause and Will Benson, at the club’s weekly lunch meeting Dec. 13.

Strause and Benson attended the Rotary meeting on the invitation of Rotary member and Plano High School Principal Eric Benson.

“These students are two of 13 Illinois State Scholars currently enrolled at Plano High School,” Benson said. “They are great role models to the rest of the student body. Both are involved in just about every extracurricular activity available.”

During the meeting, both students talked to Rotary members about their interests.

Strause has played basketball, volleyball and softball.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated as a camp counselor at Special Camps. She is also a member of the Kendall County Juvenile Justice Commission,

and a leader in her church youth group. Strause hopes to attend Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, upon her graduation from Plano High School and is looking towards a career in social work working with families of children with special needs.

Benson is also a member of the National Honor Society. During his high school career, he has played soccer, basketball and baseball. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a 4-H member who most recently volunteered at Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas packaging food for needy families. Benson is currently considering attending either Northern Illinois or Southern Illinois University and plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Both Strause and Benson cited a good example at home and paying attention in class for helping them in their academic achievements and their extracurricular successes.

Principal Benson added that both students are members of

the Capstone Program at Plano High School.

The Student of the Month is chosen by Plano High School administration to represent the student body at a designated regular weekly meeting.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. The Plano Rotary has incorporated a special focus to their mission to support local youth through scholarships and leadership opportunities.

Plano Rotary Club meets weekly at noon. Meetings include lunch and information, guest speakers, and reports on club projects, including Interact Club at Plano High School, Sherman R. Cook Memorial Scout Park, and scholarship projects to support local youth.

PHS announces Illinois State Scholars PLANO RECORD Principal Eric Benson recently announced that 13 Plano High School students from the graduating class of 2017 have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars. The following Plano High School students have been recognized: Marily Arboleda, William Benson, Matthew Davis, Bradi Gann, Jamie Heller, Ashley Martinez, Elizabeth Metcalf, Lexi Nelson, Sarah Roberts, Yadira Rosales, Brandon Sheehy, Brittany Strause and Elizabeth Torres.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the state agency committed to helping make college accessible and affordable for Illinois families, confers this prestigious recognition annually to top Illinois high school students. This year, approximately 19,300 exceptional honorees join the other top state students honored for their academic achievements since the designation was first introduced in 1958.

Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top 10 percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state. Illinois State Scholars possess strong academic potential and are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank.

“I applaud all of the 2017-18 state scholars for their hard work and outstanding academic performance,” said Eric Zarnikow, ISAC executive director. “Students have a lot to contend with as they move through high school – from increased testing to extracurricular activities to highly competitive college admissions. Kudos to these students and also to the teachers,

parents, coaches and other mentors who contributed to their success and helped them navigate a path towards college and career success.”

While State Scholar recognition does not include a monetary prize, students receive congratulatory letters from ISAC as well as personalized Certificates of Achievement sent to each high school for distribution.

Students are urged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible, if they haven’t already. The 2017-18 FAFSA, which became available on Oct. 1, determines eligibility for federal and state aid. ISAC offers free financial aid and college access events to assist students and families with the college-going process.

Students can also visit the ISAC Student Portal for college planning, financial aid and financial literacy information and free tools, as well as information on how to contact the ISACorps, a group of recent college graduates who act as near-peer mentors, for one-on-one assistance and mentoring.

Warrant arrest made County sheriff’s deputies arrested Marquette Dezhon Price, 26, of the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township Dec. 26 at 6:46 p.m. while investigating a report of a battery at the residence. Police said they learned that Price was wanted on an Aurora police warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of driving on a suspended license. Police said Price was transported to the county jail for booking.

Battery suspect in custody Plano police arrested Jose A. Munoz, 38, of the 0-100 block of West Abe Street, Plano, at Lee Street and Center Street Dec. 22 at 2:53 a.m. on two count charges of domestic battery and driving on a suspended license.

Police said Munoz was also wanted on four separate warrants for failure to appear in court on prior charges of driving under the influence, separate traffic violations and domestic battery. Munoz was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending court proceedings.

Once upon a time, long before Snapchat and Twitter, I kept myself entertained with chain letters.

With a piece of paper and a pencil, I’d write a letter to the person listed at the top of the original sheet and then copy that note three times, moving the names ahead and adding mine to the bottom.

As my list of penpals grew, so did my love of writing. By the time I was 13, I was addressing letters to Japan, France and the former Yugoslavia, and one summer I met a girl from Alaska while camping in South Dakota with my family. She was added to my address book, too.

This week, I am writing my final letter to you, the readers, as I prepare to step away from my pad of paper and my role as Kendall County Record Newspapers sports editor to begin a new chapter outside of journalism.

You have kept our chain of weekly correspondences going for a long time, turning page after page – and for that I am forever grateful.

I discovered my love for sports writing in high school. I worked my way up through the editorial ranks at Eastern Illinois University, taking beats like softball and women’s bas-

ketball as a reporter before I eventually found myself standing outside the locker room at Tennessee-Martin waiting to interview Tony Romo.

Kendall County reminded me of Charleston – a lot of cornfields surrounding towns where football is king. I’ve spent the past few days reflecting on my time here since I arrived in 2002, but it’s impossible to add up all the games and the many miles after 15 seasons.

I followed Oswego football to Menomonie, Wisconsin, Edwardsville, East St. Louis, Rock Island and, of course, Champaign. I made a few trips to Peoria for Yorkville’s state cross country races and spent a weekend in Normal when the Newark girls basketball team went to state. Plano softball’s Sweet 16 run in 2007 is still the most exciting fastpitch season I’ve experienced.

The Plano girls basketball team (11-2) opened the Amboy Holiday Tournament with a 54-44 win over Ridgewood on Monday. The Lady Reapers faced Ottawa Marquette on Tuesday in pool play and picked up a 54-46 victory to move into Wednesday’s game against Ashton-Franklin Center on a six-game win streak. Tournament play continues through Thursday, with the championship game set for 7:30 p.m.

Continued from page 14 along Route 34, Oswego East was built – and suddenly Oswego hated Morris just a little bit less. Still, there’s nothing worse than trying to interview Karl Hoinkes after a loss to the Redskins.

There’s nothing better than a packed football stadium when Oswego East takes on Oswego or Plano meets Sandwich, a full gymnasium for a showdown between Yorkville and Morris ... or standing room only when Newark basketball plays, well, anyone. But I won’t miss trying to find a parking spot.

I will miss the familiar faces I see, season after season, cheering for their team through thick and thin.

The little ones sitting in the bleachers with their popcorn waiting for their turn to step into their older brother or

sister’s shoes and become the newest headlines on these pages. The former athletes who return to their alma mater to coach the next generation.

As the saying goes, when you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life – and that is absolutely true. I am blessed to have had this opportunity to fill these pages with your stories over the years.

I know you’ll be in good hands when Joshua Welge takes over the sports desk in January. There are many untold stories still to come that will keep you turning these pages week after week.

The little girl from Yugoslavia is now an English teacher in Serbia, and my friend from the campground is now living with her husband and new baby girl in Italy.

Thanks to the power of digital media and Kendall County Now online, I won’t have to wait for the mailman to arrive to keep in touch with you.

The best of these expressions has some sincere sentiment behind them. Sympathy has its best effects when its is based on good communications – and communication goes two ways. So the question is: How should we acknowledge expressions of sympathy? Ideally, all responses should be handwritten. It is hard to condemn sending a preprinted acknowledgment or commercial card which people often use. They are better than sending nothing.

For more personal acts of kindness, such as flowers or personal letters, a handwritten note is a reasonable expectation. It does not have to be long, one or two sentences will do nicely.

“Thank you for your kindness. Your

friendship means a great deal to me” That is enough to let friends know that their support is appreciated.

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Plano boys basketball team had no time to sulk in the locker room after Tuesday night’s upset loss to No. 14 seed Peoria Notre Dame.

The No. 3 seeded Reapers had just 12 hours to figure out how to get back in the win column against Mendota before a 9 a.m. tipoff in the Plano Christmas Classic consolation bracket on Dec. 28.

It was not a situation that Plano was expecting to be in after a 57-51 loss to the Irish.

“We don’t like it. We should have won,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “I told the guys that we don’t want this game to define our tournament. Mendota is going to be tough and come ready to play.”

Peoria Notre Dame relied heavily on its long-range shooting against Plano, and found its shot beyond the arc early in the second round game.

Braedon Blackford (19 points) hit the first one for the Irish late in the first quarter and Peoria Notre Dame connected on seven more throughout the game.

“We are perimeter oriented in our scoring this year – not that our post can’t score, but our best players are our perimeter players and our offense is designed to get those shots,” Peoria Notre Dame coach Tom Lacher said.

“We gutted it out. Plano is a good basketball team and we knew we’d have our hands full.”

Peoria Notre Dame hit a pair of them early in the second quarter to tie the game at 16 after trailing, and Jimmy Kelly (18 points) hit another 3-pointer to give the Irish their first lead of the game, 19-16, with under three minutes to go in the first half.

Although Elijah Maisonet (16 points) and Anthony Martinez (12 points) connected on their shots, Plano went into halftime trailing 27-23.

Plano fell behind 31-23 in the second half, but Brandon Contreras knocked down a 3-pointer and the Reapers ignited a 12-0 run including seven from Maisonet to turn the score around for a 35-31 Reaper lead. Peoria Notre Dame ended its drought with a long-distance field goal, but trailed Plano 41-38 entering the fourth quarter.

The lead continued to shift hands down the stretch, as a 3-pointer by Martinez gave Plano a 51-50 lead with 1:44 to go, but that didn’t last long.

Kelly converted his own triple on the opposite end of the court and was fouled on his successful field goal, completing the four-point play with 1:24 left to put Peoria Notre Dame ahead 54-51.

The Irish converted at the freethrow line to seal their win.

“That’s easily the turning point.

We’re in position, but we gambled and it was an ill-advised trying to steal something and ended up having to scramble back,” Kee said. “We make a dumb touch foul on the shooter. They made the plays and the free throws down the stretch. The way we played in the third quarter and the fourth, we were doing things right. It was just unfortunate. We make one mistake that ends up in a four-point play, and that was tough.”

Tournament play continues through Friday, where Plano’s best chance at recovering from its opening loss would be a ninth-place finish in the consolation bracket with three games remaining.
