Meals for Seniors program will end without volunteers Number of participating restaurants down to four

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano’s Community Meals for Seniors program will end soon if volunteers are not found to manage it, Mayor Bob Hausler told City Council members last week.

Thousands of seniors have been able to purchase meals at half the regular price through the program since it was founded in 2009. During its first year, 3,363 meals were served, Hausler said.

But the volunteers now running it are retiring and no one has stepped up to help. The work is not hard. It just takes a little time, he said.

The program was started by the city of Plano which formed a partnership with the Oswego Senior Center after it received a grant. They were then joined by Little Rock Township.

There is no charge to join the program, but seniors must show proof they are 60 or older and live in Kendall County to register. They then receive a card that can be used at any participating restaurant.

Norris Gould of Plano, the only volunteer and board member left running the program, said eligible seniors can buy meal tickets at the Plano City Hall, for $3 each that can be used to purchase meals valued at $6.50. The program pays the restaurant owner the remaining $3.50 Gould said.

Seniors are entitled to two meals a week or four a month. The tickets can be used however the senior wants to use them during the month.

Gould said they should have five board members to run the program, but said he can operate with three volunteers. But if they can’t be found soon, the program will close down within a couple of months.

Board members who work as volunteers are needed to pick up used tickets from the restaurants and pay the owners the $3.50 for each meal served,

he said. Gould said he has been supplementing the program through his business, G Force Printing in Plano.

Hausler said he became involved personally because he donates half the fees he collects from his annual fishing event to the program.

Gould, who became a volunteer in 2010, said the organization received annual grants ranging from $9,066 to $15,262 between 2010 and 2014.

Yorkville also participated in the program until not enough funds were received to cover that city’s 10 restaurants. The plan now funds only 4 restaurants, all in Plano. They are Tasty Bites, El Camino, the Plano Cafe and Sherry’s American Cafe on Main Street. Norris noted that only breakfast and lunch are available now because all four restaurants close at 2 p.m. each day.

“It would be a shame to see the program end after being in existence for eight years. Anyone interested in volunteering for the program should call me at City Hall,” Hausler said.

BRIEFS Plano sets 2017 meeting dates

Meetings dates for 2017 for the Plano City Council are quite easy to remember, according to the list released by City Clerk Kathy Miller.

All meetings with one exception will be at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month in the City Council Chambers, 17 E. Main St., in Plano.

All meetings for the Committee of the Whole will take place immediately after each regular council meeting.

Miller said the one exception is that only one regular council meeting will be held in December. It will be at 6 p.m.

The Kendall County Board unanimously approved all of its property tax levies for the coming year at its meeting Tuesday.

The levies included one for the Health Department, which was initially reduced to allow the county to help pay its employee benefits.

The levies will be reflected on the county portion of local property tax bills that will be mailed to all county property owners of record in late April or early May. Board member John Purcell, the board’s finance chairman, explained after the meeting that there were issues related to the Health Department’s benefits being paid by the county’s funds.

The County Board a year ago approved a budget which asked the Health Department to contribute $350,000 toward the cost of Health Department employee benefits, including IMRF and Social Security, Purcell said.

The cost of the benefits last year was a little more than $900,000 and, this fiscal year, the amount of benefits was almost $1 million, he said.

The health department’s entire budget is approximately $4.5 million, but only $1.6 million of that revenue comes

from tax levies, Purcell said. They get the balance of those funds from grants, fees and other revenue, he said.

Purcell said the county asked the health department to contribute $350,000 last fiscal year and $375,000 this fiscal year from its budget to the General Fund to help the county pay for those benefits.

“What we were saying was, because your payroll is about $2.4 million or $2.5 million, the benefits for the employees that are not hired with levy dollars – they’re hired with the money from these other sources – we want you to pay those benefits [by contributing to the county’s coffers],” he said.

As part of an agreement with the county, the Health Department agreed to contribute $350,000 this past budget year to the county’s coffers to help the county pay for the department’s employee benefits, but Purcell said the department had only contributed $125,000 of that amount by the end of the fiscal year in November.

“When we were finalizing the budget [this year] we realized we were $225,000 short, so we said we have to get that from somewhere, so what we did is we reduced their levy request by $225,000,” he said.

Purcell said the department had agreed to pay that $225,000 from its

coffers, as long as the county didn’t reduce its levy, but that there still was the issue of the $375,000 that would be coming from the Health Department funds to the county coffers in this budget year.

Dr. Amaal Tokars, executive director of the Health Department, spoke to the board Tuesday morning stating that the department would pay that money through its funds if the board didn’t reduce the department’s levy for the coming year.

As a result, Purcell said he supported a levy that was originally proposed, rather than a reduced levy for the Health Department.

The County Board approved the Health Department’s tax levy of $757,000 in a unanimous vote.

In addition, the board approved the following maximum fund levy amounts unanimously: General Fund: $11,208,725; Veteran’s Assistance Commission: $403,789; Tuberculosis Fund: $15,000; Liability Insurance Fund: $1.1 million; Social Security Fund, $1,535,000; Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund: $3 million; County Bridge Fund: $500,000; County Highway Fund: $1.5 million; Extension Education Fund: $187,527; Senior Citizen Social Services Fund: $350,000; 708 Mental Health Fund: $930,000.

We’ll call it an early Christmas present for parents of Plano School District 88 students and taxpayers.

As we reported Dec. 8, Plano High School students continue to make major strides in academics, according to information presented to the school district board earlier this month. Principal Eric Benson told school board members that PHS students had the highest number of passing scores on Advanced Placement Exams in school history. He said this year’s number of 110 students is an increase of 51 percent from the previous year. In addition, Benson said PHS recently was recognized for the second year in a row as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in Illinois, moving up 15 slots from number 65 in 2015, to number 50 this year.

Benson also noted that the College Board recognized 22 PHS students as AP Scholars for the 2016 testing year, up from 8 in 2015, and 18 PHS underclassmen

earned college credit by passing an Advanced Placement Exam.

Also, the Illinois Student Assistant Commission announced two weeks ago that 13 PHS students have been named Illinois State Scholars. The honored scholars are Marily Arboleda, William Benson, Matthew Davis, Bradi Gann, Jamie Heller, Ashley Martinez, Elizabeth Metcalf, Lexi Nelson, Sarah Roberts, Yadira Rosales, Brandon Sheehy, Brittany Strause and Elizabeth Torres.

Successful public schools have always been integral to the success of every community and the improving academic results at Plano High School should be welcome news for everyone in District 88. To the Editor: While Congress prepares to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act, it’s important to remember what’s really at stake – the health and well-being of people – including over 1 million Illinoisans who depend on coverage under the ACA. We can’t afford to take action that disrupts health care coverage and the Illinois economy. Any repeal of ACA coverage should not take effect until the replacement plan takes effect.

If Congress does not make repeal of coverage contingent on adoption of a replacement plan, then Congress should also repeal the hospital payment cuts that help pay for ACA coverage. Illinois hospitals have experienced over $1 billion in ACA payment cuts.

Otherwise, people won’t be able to get the care they need, local economies will suffer and jobs will

make the turn and ran into the telephone pole in front of Dr. Frazier’s office. The driver, Clarence DeWitt, was knocked unconscious by the blow and several of the passengers received minor injuries.”

Oswego, too, had its good sledding streets. The Record’s Oswego correspondent reported on Feb. 9, 1887 that: “Tobogganing was the rage during the last week; there was quite a good natural slide down Benton Street from John Young’s, and crowds of old and young would gather there to engage in the fun or at least witness it.”

By the time we came along, most of the good sledding streets had been paved. But kids living in Oswego had access to Herren’s Hill in back of Nellie Wormley Herren’s elaborate Italianate house at Main and what was then Rosehill, and is today Wilson Place. The hill ran down behind the Herren house to the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy tracks, and offered thrills for those who had access.

But we lived north of town, and it was a hike down to Herren’s Hill, so we made use of local slopes that were either terrifyingly steep – and short – or gentler, and less exciting.

Monday was the deadline to apply for Affordable Care Act marketplace insurance during the open enrollment period. And it may be the last deadline for that program, if certain politicians get their way.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said repealing the ACA, also known as Obamacare, will be the first item on the Senate’s agenda in the new year.

Hopefully, the politicians will have a plan to replace the Act, so the millions of people covered under it don’t have

The Affordable Care Act insurance isn’t perfect. There were 28.5 million people still uninsured as of the end of 2015, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, mostly because they can’t afford to pay the premiums even after

factoring in subsidies, aren’t eligible for subsidized rates, or other reasons.

It can also be ridiculously complex to sign up for coverage. I know of several friends who support the coverage but voiced to me frustration in trying to sign up for coverage. Some coverage is inadequate, with the only “affordable” option a high-deductible plan.

I get it. I have a personal relationship with Obamacare. I was freelancing and working part-time for a year before returning full-time to the newspaper industry. While signing

up for the exchanges was relatively easy, switching coverage could get confusing and, again, I was faced with a monthly premium that I could afford but only if I joined a plan with a $6,000 or so deductible.

And yet, I support the ACA wholeheartedly. The ACA insurance was my only option as someone who was self-employed and also had pre-existing medical conditions. Without it, I would have most likely been

When December rolled around, us kids knew two things: Christmas was getting close, and good sledding was a definite possibility – with a little help from Mother Nature.

Like so many French fur traders greasing their traps in preparation for gathering furs or farmers putting the finishing touches on repairing and storing their machinery until spring, we started making our preparations for sledding success to come.

Some of us had toboggans, but not many. Toboggans are unwieldy and relatively unmaneuverable, and they take quite a bit of care. But for those who had them, they were taken down from where they were hanging in garages and barns, dusted off, the grab ropes along the side checked to make sure they were sound and wouldn’t break during an exciting downhill run, and the pull rope in front inspected for wear. Then the bottom was given a good coat of wax pilfered from the parents’ car cleaning supplies.

Most of us, though, had our trusty coasting sleds with a wooden deck and steel runners. Getting them ready for action meant wiping off the dust and cobwebs, and sandpapering or steel wooling the runners to remove months of rust. Applying wax to the runners from the candle nub many of us kept handy in a pocket for emergencies made everything ready for action.

The trick was finding a good sledding hill, which wasn’t as difficult as it might have seemed. Most towns along the Fox River are generally built on the brow of the river valley, meaning there are plentiful slopes down to the river. The trick was finding one that wasn’t already occupied by a house or business or street. When it came to streets that sometimes just didn’t matter, especially in the days when some of them were unpaved.

Yorkville youngsters enjoyed great sledding down the Bridge Street hill, as this note in the Jan. 20, 1915, Kendall County Record reported: “While the coasting on the Bridge street hill has been fine and called out large crowds for several weeks, there were several accidents that lamed some of the young folks. The thaw and rain of last week made the hill almost a glare of ice and on Friday the bobsleds had trouble in keeping in the track. One bob failed to

our thrilled hearts were crushed when a light rain struck. In our minds’ eyes, we could see that wonderful snow cover melting before we’d even had a chance to put it to use.

But then Mother Nature changed her mind one more time, sending a fierce cold front down out of Alberta that froze everything pretty much solid.

And that included the surface of the snow – where the light rain had penetrated the first couple of inches, it created an icy surface that perfectly supported the weight of us and our sleds.

To take full advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, friends mapped out a course that ran from behind Sanderson’s house on Route 25 on a diagonal through a half-dozen backyards all the way to North Street. Maneuverability was somewhat chancy given the icy surface we were sledding on, but the course was basically a straight line.

The only possible hazards were the grape arbors in two or three of the backyards, consisting of sturdy posts set about five feet apart with thick number 9 wire threaded through the posts, two or three strands high to support the grape vines.

It wasn’t difficult to pass under the first strand, which was a couple feet off the ground, although it was a relatively tight fit. But a person had to be careful.

It was great sledding for a week or more. The icy surface and well-waxed runners produced a surprising turn of speed after a running start. But then one of our number, racing with several others, forgot his location in the excitement of speeding along the slope.

He turned his head to see if anyone was gaining on him, lifting it slightly to look over his shoulder just as he reached one of one of the grape arbors.

The thick wire bit pretty deeply.

It really was spectacular, producing, as head wounds will, disturbing amounts of blood, at which point we were pretty sure our days of flying downslope propelled by a good start and gravity on that particular course were at an end. Which they were. We received stern parental lectures about caution and good sense and the other practical things with which parents always seemed obsessed.

But there for a while, we could engage in the sheer enjoyment of a crisp day, a fast track, and the exhilaration of a lengthy downhill run right in our own figurative backyard.

In the end, we need to find a solution, and that solution may be in the dreaded socialist plans of Germany, France, Canada, Norway, or any number of civilized countries that have found that a single-payer or Medicarefor-all style of system is the way to go.

The only parties who should be stomping their feet and challenging such an idea are the big insurance companies, and you can bet that they have the ears, and the pocketbooks, of the politicians in Washington.

I’ve never understood the resistance to this idea of Medicare-for-all, except that certain politicians use it as a piece of red meat in which to bait their base and trick them into thinking that something that could save them from medical bankruptcy is somehow bad for them.

Among the arguments is that it will raise your taxes. Look at your tax bills, your receipts. Do you think we have low taxes now? What are we getting out of them? We have trillions of tax dollars to spend on wars, billions to spend on defense contracts, but when it comes to insuring the nation’s middle class? Whoa, whoa, pump the

brakes, Stalin.

Look around your communities.

How many pork chop suppers, pizza fundraisers, and other events are held just so that a family can raise a few thousand dollars to pay for their kid’s cancer treatment? Is that your idea of freedom? What about the cost of drugs that a family has to pay for upfront so their son or daughter can get that experimental treatment that could potentially save their life? Is that liberty?

And while the politicians in Washington like to tell people “Oh no, not health care for all, that’s bad, this is not for you,” they get premium health care themselves, bought and paid for with your tax dollars, while they stuff their campaign coffers with contributions from Big Insurance.

To paraphrase the great George Carlin, it’s a big club, and you and I are not in it.

They say that the election of Trump was a sign of growing anger in this country about the elites in Washington not understanding the working class. Well, will the working class at last stand up to those elites and demand a basic, fair health care system for all? Or will we continue to delude ourselves that we “can’t afford” a true health care system, as people die because they literally can’t afford to get better.

ST. CHARLES – Illinois’ continuing budget issues and delay in paying service providers puts agencies that care for senior citizens and those with disabilities at risk of cutting services – or closing entirely.

Marla Fronczak, the community planning division manager for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, and others painted a dire picture for agencies that serve the elderly and those with disabilities.

“The notion that government cannot afford these programs really misses a huge reality,” Fronczak said. “This is the most cost-effective way to do it – with nonprofits – rather than hospitals or nursing homes or prisons.”

Fronczak, other service providers and several elected officials participated in the 28th annual Kane County Legislative Forum on Aging and Disability Issues, held at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles, with about 65 people in attendance.

Local agencies that provide in-home care are nearing a “tipping point,” where many may never recover, if lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner do not address budget issues, Fronczak said.

The stop-gap budget appropriation

“We are slowly dismantling human services,” Fronczak said. “Our providers will shut down, and some will never open again.”

Bette Schoenholtz, executive director for Senior Services Associates, described six seniors who receive care – from a few hours a week to 35 hours a week.

Cutting those services to place those individuals in nursing homes would cost at least $106,000 a year – an increase of $70,000 to $90,000 per year per person, Schoenholtz said.

“We are going to have to try to keep them in their homes with many less dollars,” Schoenholtz said. “It does not sound like it’s realistic at all.”

Schoenholtz said with a stop-gap budget and no budget, it leaves these agencies not knowing what money is coming in.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, warned that the state faces the risk of real cuts to funding for human services.

“The cuts will be called ‘reforms,’ but they will be cuts,” Foster said.

Foster also spoke about what Illinois loses to low-population states through what it pays in federal taxes. The state gets back 75 cents per dollar for what it

County Jail, deputies found a clear plastic bag with 4 grams of cocaine hidden on Adamcyk’s person.

In November, Adamcyk was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic needle and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records.

Adamcyk remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Monday evening in lieu of $100,000 bond.

In 2015, Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District officials called Adamcyk a hero after she helped save the life of a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy in the Lakewood Creek subdivision.

Adamcyk waded out into the water in a retention pond where the boy was found floating, got him back to shore and revived him with chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Bristol Twp. man charged with trespassing at clerk’s office

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Bristol Township man was arrested Dec. 14 for criminal trespass at the County Office Building in Yorkville.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Carl Bodnar, 72, of the 7000 block of Galena Road, Bristol, for

criminal trespass to land following a dispute with the County Clerk’s Office. Sheriff’s deputies said he had been asked to leave the premises earlier this year.

Carl Bodnar “Earlier in the year, he had an incident with some discrepancies with the County

Clerk’s Office, and they had asked that he be trespassed from the property,” sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Michael Mrozek said. “He was back there the other day, and he was violating that trespass, and that’s why he was arrested.”

Mrozek said once a person is served with a trespass violation, they are not allowed to come back to the property

for one year. If the victim decides to extend that trespass order beyond that year, they need to contact the sheriff’s office, he said.

“I also speak for the House Democratic caucus,” Moeller said. “We are willing to negotiate and sit down with the other side to negotiate for reforms.

We want to make Illinois as competitive as we can, as well ... but they have to be reforms that do not harm middle-class families and actually save the state money.”

Washington Irving observed: “The sorrow for the dead is the only sorrow from which we refuse to be divorced. Other wounds we seek to heal, but this wound we consider a duty to keep open.”

Grief, however painful, keeps us acutely conscious of the deceased. In that sense it helps to keep that person alive in our hearts and minds. Holding onto grief is a way of protesting the possibility that time will dull the sharp edges of our memory, robbing us further of the presence of a lost loved one.

When the memory does dull, as it will, and the grief becomes less sharp, there often comes a sense of guilt. The survivor begins to feel disloyal for abandoning the stronger feelings of loss or feeling them less often. Yet, this is natural. It is the healing

“Business and income taxes is about $25 billion,” Foster said. “If we got rid of the ‘payer’ state problem … we could eliminate all state taxes in Illinois.”

But State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, took Foster to task.

“Which side of the moon have you been living on?” Oberweis said. “Certainly not in Kane County. We are in an incredibly difficult financial situation. We are the family that goes out and spends and spends and spends … and all of a sudden the credit card runs out.”

Politicians are to blame, Oberweis said.

“Thank God we have a governor who said we’re not doing this anymore,” Oberweis said. “[House Speaker] Mike Madigan will not allow a balanced budget to pass, and the governor is not going to accept a tax increase.”

Oberweis advocated supporting Rauner’s initiatives to reform worker’s compensation and to encourage business to build the state’s tax base.

State Sen. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, then took Oberweis to task for his comments about Foster.

“That was uncalled for,” Chapa LaVia said. “We don’t do that. That’s bullying. That does not get us anywhere.”

Reapers finally get best of Lisle

The Lisle girls basketball team has had Plano’s number for the last decade.

The Reapers ended that lengthy losing skid on Dec. 15, winning 4537 in Lisle to improve to 9-2 overall and maintain a perfect 5-0 record in Interstate Eight Conference action.

“We had not beaten Lisle in a conference varsity game in about 10 years, so to go on the road and play that type of game was a big step for our program,” Plano coach John Chernick said. “Also, for our girls to play a good team and have to close out a game in a hostile environment was another plus for us.”

Plano junior MaKayli Vann led the Reapers with 21 points, while senior Demetra Phylactos chipped in with 11 points in the winning effort.

“They went with a box-and-1 defense to stop MaKayli, and it is imperative for the other girls to step up in that situation, and we have been able to do that so far,”

John Chernick Plano girls basketball coach Chernick said. “At Lisle, it was Demetra’s turn, and she did a great job hitting some threes for us. But MaKenzie [Vann], Bradi [Gann], Alyssa Dolan, and some others have all taken turns and made some big contributions. Also, defense is so often overlooked in basketball, but we have a bunch of girls that love to play defense. Raven Russell was the latest girl to take a charge for us, and that was at a key juncture of the game. And a lot of that credit goes to Coach

[Al] Gruidl. He came up with the game plan for Lisle, and he implemented it with the girls.”

Plano is now in the midst of an 11-day schedule break before opening play in the Amboy Holiday Tournament. Conference play resumes at Herscher on Jan. 5, with games against Seneca and Manteno coming up before the I-8 tournament tips off on Jan. 19.

“To be 5-0 in conference feels really good,” Chernick said. “It’s been a long time since we had that sort of record in conference play, and hopefully we can continue taking steps in that direction. We know we still have some really tough games ahead with Seneca, Herscher and Peotone, but we are in a good position right now, and the girls are starting to believe in themselves and in each other more and more with each game.”

The Amboy tournament opens at 3 p.m. Dec. 26 against Ridgewood before Plano meets Marquette and Ashton-Franklin Center in Red Pool play. Championship matchups take place on Dec. 29, with the title game at 7:30 p.m.

Plano wrestling falls in triangular PLANO RECORD

The Plano wrestling team (3-9) dropped both matches in a triangular with Oregon (51-12) and Rochelle (73-6) on Dec. 15. Plano wrestled without three starters due to injuries. Plano will now take an extended schedule break until the twoday DeKalb Dual Team Tournament begins on Dec. 29.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Plano JV: The Plano JV basketball team picked up a win to start the Hall Sophomore Tournament. The Reapers (7-2) defeated Hall 60-50 on Dec. 14.

Plano Freshman: The Reapers (3-4) defeated Reed-Custer 57-40 on Dec. 14 to notch its first win in Interstate Eight Conference play this season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Plano JV: The Reapers (1-9) fell 37-12 to Westmont on Dec. 17 in the Earlville Holiday Tournament. On Dec. 14, Plano fell 37-23 to Reed-Custer.

Plano Freshman: The Reapers (0-9) lost their first two games in the Rosary Tournament. On Dec. 14, Plano lost to Rosary, 37-21, and the following night they lost to Aurora Central Catholic 29-17.

Reapers run up 30-point lead in win over Bobcats; team plays Lisle next

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After a disappointing week at the Spring Valley Hall Tournament, the Plano boys basketball team wasted no time getting into a groove on Tuesday.

The Reapers (7-2) staked an early edge against visiting Somonauk and turned a 30-point halftime lead into an 80-51 victory in the non-conference game.

“Coming off the Hall tournament where we didn’t play particularly well, it was nice to see us get back on the court and get back to playing the way we can play,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “We had a good first half; we had a lot of energy.”

Plano pushed the pace especially in the final two minutes of the first half, with a basket from Nate Shead (15 points), a 3-pointer from Will Benson and a Elijah Maisonet (19 points) capping a 27-point second period.

Shead hit another one from beyond the arc in the early minutes of the third quarter – his third of the game – to give Plano a 58-21 lead.

“Down at Hall, we weren’t getting much from anyone else and he bailed us out,” Kee said of Shead. “He’s been playing great all year and I think he’s the best shooter around. When he’s not open, he can get open.”

Keegan Shettles came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer for Plano, and Anthony Martinez converted a three-point play at the foul line after a successful putback for a 68-30 score. Kee rotated players into the mix throughout the fourth quarter, and both Michael Baltazar and Israel Adeoti knocked down 3-pointers to give Plano a 76-36 lead with six minutes still to play.

“We feel like we’ve got a deep team. It’s a good problem to have and we try and get as many guys out there as we can,” Kee said.

“It allows us to give Nate and Brandon some breaks. When we can get Keegan off the bench with the way he’s been shooting lately, that’s great, Ethan hit-

ting threes – on nights like this, we look like a really deep team.”

Before shifting its focus to the upcoming Plano Christmas Classic, first the Reapers must handle a road trip to Lisle on Thursday for a key Interstate Eight Conference game.

“We’ve got to be ready for Lisle. They’re a good team, and playing at their place, it’s going to be loud,” Kee said. “We just want to keep getting better.

That’s our mentality. Last week was a good wake-up call for us.

If we don’t do things right and we don’t play hard, we can get beat by anybody.”

Plano earned the No. 3 seed in the 24-team field and will open play on its home court Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. against the winner of Monday’s first-round game between Forreston and No. 14 Peoria Notre Dame. Burlington Central was awarded the top seed, followed by Northridge Prep and Newark closed out the top four. Tournament play runs through Dec. 30.

“Being the three seed, it’s nice. I don’t remember us being that high as far back as I can remember,” Kee said. “It’s exciting and it’s fun, but we know that we have Peoria Notre Dame and Forreston sitting there, and they’re not going to say “Oh, you’re the three seed. Go right ahead.’ We’re trying to keep an even keel and just try and get better.”

Plano 59, Marquette 58 (OT):

The Reapers closed out the Hall Tournament with an overtime win to finish 2-2 in tournament play. Marquette outscored Plano 18-9 in the fourth quarter to force the bonus period after Plano led 32-22 at halftime. Nate Shead hit four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 23 points with six rebounds. Brandon Contreras had 14 points while Keegan Shettles knocked in nine.

Rock Falls 64, Plano 51: Despite a 20-point third quarter, the Reapers could not catch up after trailing Rock Falls 23-18 at halftime. Shead had 17 points to lead the Reapers.
