It was an evening for giving thanks at Monday’s Plano City Council meeting.

Mike Wells, a volunteer with the Community Gardens, told city council members that the organization donated 7,000 pounds of fresh produce to needy families in the community this year. He thanked the council for helping his group serve the Kendall County Community Food Pantry with food and water and with tilling the site for the gardens.

He said the food was donated to the pantry, which makes it available to needy families in the community.

“We wanted to thank the council and the many other organizations in the community that helped us,” Wells said.

Wells said they plan to build a shed next year to store their equipment and other items needed for the gardens. He said this will help them increase their production.

“With your continued support we hope to do even better next year,” he added.

Mayor Bob Hausler thanked everyone who helped during the Rockin’ Christmas event the previous weekend. Hausler said more than 300 boxes

of food were distributed to less fortunate residents and families in Plano.

He added the residents in the city’s two senior facilities were served free meals.

Each of the aldermen who helped with the program commented on how glad they were to cooperate. All of the aldermen who were available to help donated their time to see that the food boxes were delivered. Alderman Ben DeBolt talked about how good it made him feel when he delivered a box of food to a family and saw the smiles on their faces.

Rich Healy, director of the Plano Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the annual Rockin’ Christmas event, thanked everyone who participated in the program.

“Each year the program gets bigger,” he said, but added that the real reason for Rockin’ Christmas is to provide for some of the city’s less fortunate families who are in need during the holiday season.

“We sometimes tend to lose sight of that when we get caught up in the celebratory portion of the event. The band, the tree lighting, Santa, the parade are all very nice, but the bottom line is that we’re helping citizens in our community that are in need,” he said.

Healy noted that the weather on

Sunday made delivery of food boxes a bit more difficult, but they were able to get all of them delivered bringing a lot of joy to the families who received them. He said the event was a success and they are already working on next year.

“We’re hoping the number of recipients will be less next year, which would mean the economy is improving,” Healy said.

But there also was a sad message from Hausler. He said the city’s Senior Dineout Program that has been together since 2010 may be discontinued.

“I know the senior citizens appreciated their efforts,” he said, adding that several of the volunteers have decided not to continue helping with the program.

“If we don’t get any more volunteers, the program will be discontinued at the end of this month,” he said.

“Anyone who would like to help keep it going should call city hall and leave your name. It is a good program for our seniors. I would like to see it continue,” he said.

Hausler said they held a meeting a week ago and discussed the city taking over the program but because of the bylaws and different issues, the city cannot do it.

“I hope some group can get together and keep the program going,” he said.

Plano police help local families in need

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Police departments in communities across the nation have been helping many less fortunate families through the Shop with a Cop program, so Plano decided to do the same thing, city council members were told Monday night.

Police Chief Jonathan Whowell said Sgt. Norman Allison suggested the department sponsor the program, and Sgt. Aaron Smith and Patrolmen Anthony Joutras and Brian Rolls

agreed to help.

Whowell told city council members they had talked about doing this in the past, but were not able to get the program together until this year.

He said they talked to officials from Plano’s Wal-Mart store and the company agreed to donate $2,500 for the program.

He said $100 will go to each of 10 students. Two will be chosen from each of Plano’s five schools – the high school, middle school and three elementary schools. Also, two families will receive $500 each and two families will receive

$250 each, he said.

Whowell said they will ask for recommendations from school officials and from other residents for suggestions of families who should be helped.

“Each person will receive a gift card from Wal-Mart when we take them to the store. We’re going to go with them through them as they choose gifts for their families,” he said.

The police officers are volunteering their time to do this, the chief added.

“We’re sure it will be a success and are already planning to do it again next year,” he said.

John Shaw that it is another layer of unnecessary government. But Shaw said townships serve a purpose, and that it could cost the county money to hire staff, for example, to handle the additional road maintenance.

“People are not aware or don’t stop to think about the fact that every township handles the tax assessment in the township, and I think they figured they would have to hire [in the county Supervisor of Assessments Office] at least

11 or maybe 12 new employees,” he said. “Those could very easily be union employees. Then you’d have to hire, I would say 15 new people to work in the Highway Department. And the further south you get and west, it would be the same way. So I think townships are very necessary.”

Looking back on his time as chairman, Shaw said the attempt to change the County Board’s pay from per diem, or per-day, to a straight annual salary, along with eliminating the mileage reimbursement and health insurance benefits for board members, was a “failed accomplishment.”

“This is an ongoing argument that you should not get rid of per diems because that way you can tell who’s coming to meetings and who isn’t,” he said. “That’s an argument that [former Chairman] Anne [Vickery] and I had.”

Shaw said he didn’t have any regrets from his time as chairman.

“I enjoyed it,” he said.

New county chairman talks needs, leadership

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com New Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder said this week that the new board will be dealing with a variety of issues, including road projects, union contracts and economic development.

Gryder, who has been on the board since 2012 and was previously a trustee for the Oswego Public Library District and a member of the village of Oswego Plan Commission, was unanimously selected by board members to be chairman at a Dec. 5 organization meeting. The chairman serves a two-year term.

In addition to Gryder, board member Judy Gilmour was named president of the Forest Preserve District Board, replacing Jeff Wehrli, who has retired from the board.

In all, there are three new members joining the board this month: Matt Kellogg of Yorkville, Audra Hendrix of Yorkville and Tony Giles of Oswego. Gryder said there will be some learning to go along with the new leadership and new board members.

“There’s going to be some growing pains, I’d guess, but we’ll try to get it down,” Gryder said.

“Our infrastructure needs, I don’t think we were able to address as quickly as the growth came,” he said.

Gryder said east-west corridors have been addressed, such as Route 34, but now the county needs to look to north-south routes, such as the proposed Wikaduke Trail at the Kendall-Will County line, Orchard Road and Eldamain Road.

“There’s a study that’s going to be done in the fall as to the Wikaduke Trail,” he said. “That’s something that’s been in the 20, 25 years discussion. Right now there’s a centerline recorded by the county, and the village of Oswego shows a different route on their comprehensive plan. So we thought it would make sense for us to decide [on the route]. Should we align with Oswego? That’s the kind of stuff we’re looking at.”

The Eldamain Road bridge over the Fox River between Yorkville and Plano is still in the long-term plans, Gryder said.

The road has seen improvements over the last two years, thanks in part to grant funding via the Kane-Kendall Council of Mayors.

Yorkville resident John Shaw’s term as a Kendall County Board member, and board chairman, ended this month.

Shaw, 78, had been chairman since 2012 and a board member since 2008.

He plans on running for Kendall Township trustee in the April election.

Shaw, who peppered his County Board meetings with jokes and asides, said the key to being a good board chairman is getting independent people to work together. He has likened the chairmanship to “herding cats.”

“The goal of the chairman of the County Board, how I like to characterize it, is to get enough of the cats that are very independent to go in the same direction so we can get something done,” he said. “It was interesting.”

Shaw said his background in running a limestone business helped him

with being a successful chairman.

Shaw said he also previously served as an elected Lisbon Township clerk and a member of the Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District Board, and said those experiences helped him as a board chairman as well.

It’s time to improve Route 47 We praised Kendall County Board member Scott Gryder back in 2014 when he joined with fellow board member Lynn Cullick to lead an effort to jump-start the planning effort to widen traffic-snarled Wolf’s Crossing Road in Oswego. Now, we would like to see Gryder, in his new role as county board chairman, organize a similar effort to spur the Illinois Department of Transportation to expedite the widening of Route 47 between Yorkville and Sugar Grove.

Anyone who regularly drives Route 47 will understand the need to widen the highway from its current two-lane configuration to four lanes. Traffic backs up in the northbound lanes of the highway every weekday morning, especially at Galena Road and at Route 30 and Jericho Road at the county line. Meanwhile, traffic is usually a solid, continuous line of slowly creeping vehicles every weekday evening from Sugar Grove south to Yorkville.

The traffic back-ups are, at minimum, a daily annoyance for thousands of county residents, but also pose a public safety hazard and a hindrance to county and local economic development efforts.

It’s interesting to note that contractors

for IDOT are now proceeding with the widening of Route 34 between Yorkville and Oswego, even though the traffic volume on the segment of Route 34 set for improvement is significantly less than the traffic on Route 47 between Yorkville and Sugar Grove. According to IDOT’s own average daily traffic figures, traffic volume on the segment of Route 34 set for widening ranges from 13,700 to 14,100 vehicles, while the average daily traffic on Route 47 between Yorkville and Sugar Grove ranges from a low of 14,400 to 16,000.

The coming year may prove to be a good time for county, other local officials and area state and federal lawmakers to take up the more-lanes-for-Route 47 cause.

President-elect Donald Trump has proposed cutting taxes while at the same time borrowing $1 trillion dollars over the next 10 years to fund a nationwide infrastructure improvement program. If that program ever gets off the ground, U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, should work to bring some of those funds to his district to improve Route 47 and, while he’s at it, Route 30 between Route 47 and Route 31 in Montgomery.

A snowy day in 1943 at the intersection of Main and Washington streets in Oswego. ground, allowing a keen ear to pick out familiar noises only now and then. Here the scrape of a shovel on a concrete drive or walk, there the joyful cry of a sledder on the way down a steep hill. But mostly, it was quiet as even the noisy English sparrows sat hunched with their feathers fluffed for warmth, waiting for clear flying weather.

A snowstorm has a smell all its own, you know. It is a sharp, clean smell that puts a person in mind of those stiffly white, freshly frozen bed sheets everyone’s grandmother gathered in off the clothes line in deepest January; an aroma that, I am quite sure, certain businessmen would sell their very souls for, could it be bottled and lined up on store shelves.

Out in back of the chicken house, large icicles hung down from the roof, looking for all the world like stalactites hanging from the ceiling of a prehistoric cave. There is a certain unique beauty in a clear, sharply tapering icicle.

And nothing seemed quite so warm and wonderful as, while still grasping that freshly-born crystal clear icicle, going in the door of the chicken house, with its heavy smell of feathers and nesting straw complemented by the sounds of chuckling hens.

Heading back to the house pulling a brand new sled, magnificent in its varnished wood and red painted runners that just the day before were carefully polished with a bit of steel wool and then waxed with the nub of an old candle, it was not too difficult to imagine Arctic explorers or Eskimo hunters trudging alongside, sharing the adventures and hardships of a long, frozen journey fraught with all manner of dangers. Do you suppose a polar bear smells anything like a tail-wagging dog after she’s had a happy roll in the snow?

After stamping and sweeping the snow from boots and snow pants, that wonderful kitchen all grandmothers seemed to possess, with all its special wintertime aromas, provided the perfect welcome. The cheery cookstove, all shiny white porcelain and dull black cast iron, warmed the room and provided, back behind and next to the wall, the perfect haven for a slumbering cat curled up in a cardboard box.

Huge fresh-baked sugar cookies and fluted-edged molasses cookies, each with three small half-circles indented (creating dark brown smiley faces way before emojis were a gleam in someone’s digital dreams), cooling on the kitchen counter added a sweet smell of

We need people with good common sense. Lawyers need not apply.

Whether city, county, state or federal, politicians will be limited to two terms only. To be paid but no pension

Eliminate 33 percent of the 84 superintendents and staff in the state who are nothing more than self-serving individuals screwing up our kids with crazy pro-

grams vs. reading, writing and arithmetic. They are just sucking up money which could go to great teachers and these students.

Our police are under siege. Protesters can have protests in areas where they do not interfere with foot or vehicle traffic. If they don’t follow the rules, they do six months community service. Tough but fair.

Despite the effects of climate change on our Illinois winters, it still gives me a warm feeling to sit here in my office, in the house my great-grandparents built as their retirement home, and watch the flakes fall during an early winter snowfall.

Downtown, children and adults, all dressed in high-tech, down-filled, rip-stop winter clothing, hurry along the sidewalks on their way to and from downtown stores. Today’s clothing is lighter and more comfortable and autos and other pieces of necessary machinery are more dependable, but an Illinois winter’s cold, wind and snow are constants that conjure up memories of winters and holidays past.

These days, I chiefly recall those days of decades ago by their sounds and aromas.

The sound of a small boy walking along a snowy lane with corduroy pants and five-buckle boots seemed unnaturally loud during a quiet early morning snowfall. Each step produced a “whoop-clink!” as first one and then another corduroyed leg noisily brushed against its brother with a rough-soft sound punctuated by the musical jingle of boot buckles.

If the weather was right and the snowflakes were too, the tiny crackle each one made as it landed could be heard – if a sharp young ear was close enough to a winter coat’s arm.

Trudging along a country road, down a deserted village lane, or across a lonely farmstead, a winter day stroller had plenty of time to get off the road when traffic came from behind. The chains everyone used for traction in snow and on ice in those pre-snow tire, pre-front-wheel-drive days heralded each car and truck well in advance, as the chained tires squeaked and jingled and jangled through the snow.

During a snowstorm, all the regular daytime sounds were muffled by the dense whiteness as it cascaded to the

sugar and spice all their own.

The scarf was unwound, the hat and mittens removed, the thick winter coat unbuckled and unzipped. Damp mittens were put on the back of the cookstove to dry, all of it adding a moist wool smell to the room.

Remarkable designs had appeared overnight on the windows, with mysterious, enigmatic, beautiful scenes outlined in shining frost. Who was this wintertime Picasso and why did he seem to do his finest work on Grandmother’s kitchen windows? Jack Frost did it, was the unsatisfactory explanation.

In this day and age, a snowstorm’s quiet is punctuated by the muffled, mechanized roar of neighborhood snowblowers and pickup-mounted snowplows, but the delighted squeals of snowbound children, sentenced to frolic with sleds and snow saucers for the day, are still also there, provided you’re willing to listen hard and patiently enough.

The musical clinking of tire chains is mostly absent these days – at least in this part of the country – and the distinctive sounds made by walkers clad in corduroy pants and five-buckle boots have given way to the sleeker sounds of nylon trousers and boots apparently modeled on those worn by Moon-walking astronauts. And our modern double-glazed windows have robbed poor old Jack Frost of his best medium; he must be content these days with fewer and fewer suitable single-pane windows – hardly what the old master deserves.

The constant is the snow itself, creating a thick, soft white blanket that covers carefully manicured lawns and scarred construction sites alike. For all our modem, efficient snow clearing equipment, the dense white of our modern winter storms still slow our bustling suburban lives to an unwanted – but often secretly enjoyed – walk.

The trick is to slow down and enjoy it for what it is.

Snowy days create their own sounds, smells

Local reps split on Exelon bailout

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com The Illinois House and Senate approved a bill earlier this month that has been characterized as an Exelon bailout by those opposed to it and a job-saving, renewable-energy-­ promoting bill by those in favor of it.

The Senate passed the bill with a 32-18 vote and the House passed it with a 63-38 vote. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill Dec. 7.

Exelon stated in June that it would close two nuclear plants – one in June 2017 in Clinton and one in June 2018 in Cordova – if the state did not act on the legislation.

The legislation, which has been modified during the past two years, would give $235 million each year to utilities and allow ComEd to increase spending on energy efficiency. Monthly rates will increase for ComEd customers, but the increase will be limited to 25 cents a month.

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, came out strongly against the bill when given the chance to speak last week on the house floor. Batinick’s district includes a portion of Oswego Township and the village of Oswego.

subsidizing electricity for residents of many other states. The power grid that Exelon nuclear plants provide energy for stretches from Texas and Louisiana at the south, all the way north to Manitoba, Canada, he said.

Other Republicans, such as state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. David Welter, R-Morris, voted in favor of the bill. Many employees of Exelon’s Dresden, Braidwood and LaSalle nuclear stations live in their respective districts. Rezin’s district includes a large portion of southern and western Kendall County.

“My belief is that supporting this legislation will protect small, medium and large energy users greater than doing nothing,” Welter stated in a news release.

Rezin stated in a news release that the legislation will keep nuclear power plants in Cordova and Clinton in operation, saving thousands of jobs and keeping those communities from economic devastation.

Batinick said the bill was the only big piece of legislation the General Assembly has really worked on since a stop-gap budget was approved in late June. Now, the state will go into 2017 with no budget for the second half of the fiscal year.

MORRIS – John Anthony, former 75th District state representative, is no longer the executive assistant to the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he was making $10,000 a month after leaving his position as state representative.

Nicole Wilson from media relations with the Illinois Department of Corrections confirmed by email that “John Anthony’s employment with the Illinois Department of Corrections ended Wednesday, December 7th.”

“The IDOC does not discuss personnel matters and cannot provide any further information,” Wilson said in the email.

Several calls to Anthony for comment were not returned Saturday.

Records show Anthony made just more than $82,000 this year for his work at both the Department of Corrections and as a state representative.

Anthony, who was appointed to the position of state representative in 2013, announced his resignation from office June 17 of this year for the $120,000-a-year state job. David A. Welter, R-Morris, was appointed to fill the seat in July and won the general election in November to retain the seat.

“That bridge is gonna need to go in there at some point,” he said. “We need to figure out how to make that happen. There’s not going to be a bucket full of money from Washington like there used to be so, what do we do and how to we make that happen?”

Regarding Metra commuter rail service, the study on bringing such service out to Kendall County is “in process,” Gryder said.

“I know the Metra staff has spoken with county officials ... just trying to get all the stakeholders’ input on it,” he said. “So I expect that to be coming out in the next probably six months or so. That will provide a roadmap to what really needs to happen if that’s ever going to happen.”

Economic development in areas of the county that aren’t within municipal boundaries is another issue the board will need to tackle, Gryder said.

“The county has historically not been real involved in that,” he said.

“Overall, it’s been more of a village/ city-pushed idea. I don’t know how involved or how deep the county can get.

Some of it is out there cheerleading and supporting our municipalities, but it’s also looking at some of the unincorporated areas as well. We should

all be working together keeping jobs here in Kendall County.”

Gryder said he recently attended a meeting of the Chicago Metropolitan Area for Planning, of which Kendall County is a member, and that the topic of regional truck permitting was discussed.

“It’s not something that sounds real exciting and it’s not something that people are probably even aware of unless you’re directly involved in the industry,” he said. “But there are 300 municipalities in the Chicagoland region and many of them have different ways that they permit trucks to drive on their roads. So it can be quite a cumbersome process for truckers to navigate through the Chicagoland area. There’s a new study that came out with some recommendations and we’re going to take a look at that. The question is, is there a way for us to streamline that process in the Chicagoland area? That’s something that could help our manufacturing here, like Caterpillar or Plano Molding, or whoever else that relies on logistics.”

Gryder said Kendall County will also be hosting a regional economic outlook meeting in March. He said the meeting will include all the County Board chairmen in the Chicago region.

“It’s exciting to be able to showcase Kendall County a little bit,” he said.

SHARING COMMUNITY SPIRIT Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas helps create food boxes for needy families

or Linda Oleson of Plano, lending a helping hand and caring for others is what the holiday season is all about.

As part of Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas, Oleson was one of more than 50 volunteers that helped assemble and deliver boxes of food to 310 Plano families for the holidays.

Oleson is this year’s recipient of Rockin’ Christmas’ Ross Greiter Memorial Spirit Award, an award given to a community member that exemplifies the spirit of Christmas at all times. The award is named after 19-year-old Ross Greiter of Plano, who died in 2009.

Rich Healy, president of the Plano Area Chamber of Commerce and Rockin’ Christmas committee member, said that one of the most important aspects of the event is the award

presentation. The Ross Greiter Memorial Spirit Award and awards for the best decorated business and best decorated home were distributed.

“The purpose of the event is to provide food for families in need at Christmastime,” Healy said. “The event started almost two decades ago.

The name of the event comes when we used to take rocking chairs and rock at the train depot. Once, we lit up the rock there instead of a tree. Over the years, there’s been a bigger emphasis on the collection and distribution of food boxes.”

During the Rockin’ Christmas main event on Friday, Dec. 2, the community could donate food at the Amtrak train depot. The event also included a parade, a music performance by the Plano Middle School Band, a Christmas Katrina J.E. Donations of nonperishable food items also were collected at Old Second National Bank, Heartland Bank and Trust, Illinois Community Credit Union, First National Bank, Centrue Bank and BMO Harris Bank.

Monetary donations were collected at Plano City Hall.

To help with collection efforts, local organizations donated food: the United Methodist Church of Plano donated 318 boxes of potatoes and American Legion Post 181 of Sandwich’s American Legion Riders and Sons of the American Legion donated 224 boxes of stuffing.

As a result of the event’s efforts, 310 less fortunate families, including residents of Countryside and Deer Run apartments, senior living communities in Plano, received a box of food.

The boxes each contained a frozen turkey or ham, canned goods, boxes of potato and stuffing mixes, a gallon of milk, a pound of margarine and miscellaneous donated

items, including boxes of cereal and cans of soup.

During the evening of Friday, Dec. 2, and morning of Saturday, Dec. 3, at Plano’s Centennial Elementary School, the food items were assembled into boxes that were donated by the United Stationers in Elk Grove Village. The boxes of food were distributed to the senior apartments Saturday afternoon and to families on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Kathy Miller, a Rockin’ Christmas committee member, said the boxes go to the town’s neediest families, including the families of children on the free or reduced lunch program at school and three homeless families.

“We just want to make the holidays a little happier for people in town that need help,” Miller said.

Oleson, who has been volunteering at the event for three years, said she enjoys helping others.

SANDWICH – Thousands of homemade cookies and pieces of homemade candy are needed to fill 450 Christmas Cheer Baskets for the elderly and those living alone in Sandwich, all delivered on Christmas Eve with a visit from Santa Claus and helpers.

Area bakers and candy-makers are urged to share some of their sweets, bringing a smile to the faces of those at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion, Valley West Community Hospital, Sandwich Rehabilitation Center, Ironwood, the Sandwich Manor and others living in their homes and apartments.

The Christmas Cheer Baskets are one segment of the Franklin Mall Christmas Project that was started more than 60 years ago by the late Frankie and Peg Mall.

The Sandwich Lions Club has administered the project for many years with the cooperation of the whole community.

The cookies and candy will be packed in containers starting at

6 p.m. sharp on Thursday, Dec. 22, at the United Church of Sandwich, 512 E. Lions Road, across from Sandwich High School.

Persons can bring homemade cookies and candy to the packing site by 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, even staying to help with the packaging if they wish.

The Oswego Presbyterian Church will provide polystyrene/Styrofoam recycling for the holidays in an effort to keep the popular packing materials out of landfills. The next collection date is set for Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon in the church parking lot, at 1976 Route 25 in Oswego.

Any polystyrene foam or Styrofoam materials having the PS6 symbol will be accepted.

Event organizers ask that foam items be divided into three categories in separate plastic (tied-up) bags (i.e. garbage bags) as follows: • Foam cups and food service containers (rinsed; no straws, lids, plastic wrap or trash).

• Packaging foam peanuts.

• Other packaging foam (with labels, tape and other materials removed).

Foam insulation and other types of foam (non-PS6) will not be accepted.

Members from Tommy’s Gift Inc., the United Methodist Church of Plano and the surrounding communities gathered recently to empty concrete into deck pilings for the beginning of a fully accessible backyard retreat for Open Door residents. The design of this raised deck will dramatically increase the outdoor living space and accessibility for the residents, many of whom are wheelchair bound, and will allow them to freely spend time outdoors in a safe and controlled environment. KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS County Line Rd. crash A Newark resident, Caleb James Pulliam, 19, of the 2800 block of Route 52, was injured in a single-vehicle crash Dec. 12 at 5:33 p.m. in the 3900 block of County Line Road, Newark. Police said Pulliam lost control of his pickup truck on the ice-covered road. He was transported to Morris Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, according to police.

Z. Friestad, 33, of Bushnell School Road, Newark. Police said Sulwer reported an injury to his thumb in the crash. No other injuries were reported, according to police. Police said Sulwer was issued three citations. Minor injury in school bus crash A total of 23 Lisbon Grade School District students escaped injury Monday at 8:15 a.m. when the school bus they were passengers in was involved in a crash in the 13000 block of Apakesha Grove Road in Big Grove Township, according to the county sheriff’s office. Burglary investigation The county sheriff’s office reported this week that they are investigating a residential burglary that occurred at a home in the 0-50 block of Springdale Road in Boulder Hill Dec. 12.

Minor injuries in crash A Millington resident, Brandon L. Newberry, of the 0-300 block of Grant Street, was injured in a single-vehicle crash Dec. 12 at 3:12 p.m. in the 10000 block of Crimmin Road in Big Grove Township. Police said Newberry apparently lost control of his vehicle and it rolled over, striking a mailbox, fencepost and then a tree. Newberry was transported to Morris Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, police said.

Senior scammed A 76-year-old Boulder Hill resident was the victim of a scam Dec. 8 at 1:46 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said the victim received a call from a subject identifying himself as the victim’s grandson.

The Reapers will take an impressive 7-2 record to Lisle on Thursday for a key Interstate Eight Conference game before turning their focus to a challenging Amboy Holiday Tournament to close December.

“We have a huge game with Lisle Thursday. This will really give us an idea of where we are heading into the halfway point of the season. A win there really puts us in control of our own destiny regarding tournament seeding and our place within the conference,” Plano coach John Chernick said. “The 10 days off is nice. We will take some time to let the girls focus on their studies with finals coming up, but the Amboy tournament is one of the toughest around, so we want to be ready for that as well.”

Plano notched its third straight win on Monday, defeating Wilmington 5318 at home to remain undefeated in the I-8 at 4-0. Makayli Vann led the way

with 21 points while Makenzie Vann had 14 for Plano.

“Wilmington is rebuilding this year, and it was nice to see the girls come out right away and play with the intensity they did. To be up 23-0 after a quarter, well, you can’t ask for much more than that,” Chernick said. “I was a little upset about our lack of focus in the second quarter. We need to learn to maintain intensity and focus throughout a game. When we do learn that, we should be a dangerous team most nights.”

Last week, Plano posted back-toback wins, defeating Westmont 52-29 on Dec. 8 before winning 60-53 at Mendota on Dec. 9. Makenzie Vann had 18 points and 10 rebounds against Mendota, while Bradi Gann and Demetra Phylactos had nine points each and Makayli Vann had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Against Westmont, Makayli Vann had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Gann had nine points.

“Progress isn’t always linear. You’d like to think that every game, and every practice is a step forward, but it isn’t. But in general, I do feel like we are making good progress,” Chernick said. “I’m happy with where we are.

There are things we need to continue to work on, but for the first 10 games, I’m really happy with where we are.”

Placing your own wrestler atop the podium at a home tournament is the ultimate goal, and Nico Nunez accomplished that feat last Saturday at the Reaper Classic.

Nunez went 3-0 in the 120-pound weight class to capture first place last Saturday in Plano. He was one of four placewinners for the Reaper squad, which scored 78 points to place 13th in the 20-team field. Gibson City (GCMS) won the team title with 156.5 points, while Erie-Prophetstown (153), Aurora Christian (144) and Rich South (138) rounded out the top four.

“We only entered seven, and to have four place and get a medal is nice – over 50 percent,” Plano coach Sean Masten said.

Nunez earned a first-round bye and opened the tournament by pinning Marquise Davis of Chicago Phillips in 1:55. He won a 14-1 major decision over Winnebago’s Carlos Sanchez in the next round to set up a championship match with Rockford Lutheran’s Josh Schrank. Nunez clinched first place with an 8-5 decision over Schrank.

“In my opinion, 120 was the hardest weight class in the tournament so to have him get through that was really nice,” Masten said. “Waking up Saturday morning, we felt good about the semifinal match. Going into the championship, he knew it would be tougher, but I always felt he was in control.

He had a couple of nice takedowns, but had a little bit of trouble the wrestler when he’s on the mat. When we’re on our feet, he dominates. I felt pretty confident that dominating on the feet wasn’t going to be an issue, but looking back I wasn’t really worried over the six minutes.”

Jake Krotz took third place in the 126-pound bracket with a 3-1 record. He opened with a bye and took an 8-6 decision over Sandwich’s Jacob Newberry to move into the semifinals. There, he lost a by a 16-0 tech fall to Aurora Christian’s Noah Villarreal. Villarreal went on to win the bracket with a first period pin, and Krotz moved into the wrestlebacks and pinned Gabe Thompson of Princeton in 33 seconds to move into the finals.

“No disrespect to the second-place wrestler, but Jake was a better wrestler than him and that’s just the way it fell,” Masten said. “He lost to Villarreal in the semis and took third. He wrestled a great tournament.”

Jovanny Burciaga took sixth at 132 pounds, and Eric Boutin was sixth at 145.

Plano will enter a pair of triangular matches this week, traveling to Oregon on Dec. 15 to face Rochelle. The Reapers will then enter a 13-day schedule break before the Dec. 29-30 DeKalb Duals.

“I hope the competition doesn’t scare us,” Masten said. “Nico and Jake have been in these battles before going into DeKalb. There’s some top-ranked teams there like Moline, Glenbard West, Prospect and obviously DeKalb.

We’re going to have some competition,” Masten said.
