PHS academic standards lauded School has more AP Scholars, added clubs, AP classes in 2016-17

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano High School was recognized for the second year in a row as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in Illinois, moving up 15 slots from number 65 in 2015, to number 50 in 2016, according to Principal Eric Benson.

School board members were told at a recent board meeting by Benson that the school has the highest number of passing scores on Advanced Placement Exams (110) in Plano High School history. This year’s number of 110 is an increase of 51 percent from the previous year.

Benson noted that the College Board recognized 22 AP Scholars for the 2016 testing year, up from 8 in 2015. He said 18 PHS underclassmen earned college credit by passing an Advanced Placement Exam.

Plano High School has added AP

Computer Science Principles, AP Physics, AP Spanish Literature and AP Capstone Research for the 2016-17 school year. With these additions, the district is offering 15 AP classes during the present 2016-17 school year, he said.

Benson said 39 percent or 271 of the 694 high school students will take at least one Advanced Placement Course this school year.

“Our academic performance has increased despite a growing number of students facing more challenges,” he said adding that 54 percent of the seniors have identified a plan for their post-secondary pursuits.

He noted that 48 percent have applied to at least one college or university, 30 percent have applied to at least two colleges or universities, 19 percent have applied to at least three colleges or universities and 14 percent have applied to four or more colleges/universities.

Benson estimated that 96 percent of this year’s seniors will graduate.

Jim Schmidt, athletic director, reported on the success of the students so far this year.

He said the current GPA for students participating in varsity football, volleyball, boys and girls golf, cross country, football cheerleading and

boys soccer ranges from 3.21 to 3.68 with an average of 3.42. The cumulative GPA for students participating in varsity boys and girls basketball, cheerleading and wrestling ranged from 3.03 to 3.46 for an average of 3.27.

Out of 620 students, 248 or 39 percent participated in fall athletics in 2014-15, 257 or 39 percent of 665 in 2015-16, and 229 or 33 percent of 702 for the current 2016-17 year.

The percentages were lower for winter athletics, ranging from 26 percent in 2014-15, to 23 percent last school year and 17 percent this year, Schmidt said.

Spring athletics were slightly higher with 28 percent for 2014-15 and 24 percent last year. The present year is yet to be determined.

Schmidt said his goal is to have 84 percent of high school students participating in extracurricular activities and clubs. The number last year was 82 percent and this year to date it is 72.9 percent, he noted. He said Interact Club, Pokemon Go Club, and Gamers Club were added this year.

Benson noted that 79 percent of the high school students had no tardies so far this year and 45 percent had a perfect attendance to date.

The reports were accepted by board members.

No recommendation for shooting range Zoning panel will not endorse it; proposal to go to hearing officer

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Kendall County zoning panel has declined to recommend approval of a special use for a shooting range in the southern part of the county.

Landowner Robert Delaney has requested turning his property at 16502 Church Road in Lisbon Township into a full-time gun range called Dirt Road Range, requiring a special use zoning from the county. The land is currently zoned for agricultural use, according to county documents.

The county’s Regional Plan Commission voted 3-2 at a Nov. 30 meeting against recommending approval of the zoning to the County Board.

Commission members Tom Casey, Roger Bledsoe and Claire Wilson voted against recommending approval, while members Larry Nelson and Budd Wormley voted in favor of approval. Chairman Bill Ashton voted “present.”

The proposal will now go before a special use hearing officer on March 27 at 7 p.m. Following that process, the proposal will be reviewed by the County Board’s Planning, Building and Zoning Committee and then the full county board.

The proposal faced fierce opposition by neighbors at a July 27 commission meeting. The issue was continued, changes were made to the proposal and it was brought back to the commission on Nov. 30. The Nov. 30 meeting was also crowded, with residents of the area again voicing opposition.

Delaney has used his property as a private firing range, but now wants to open it up to the public.

Attorney Daniel Kramer of Yorkville represented Delaney during the meeting and discussed the issue of accessing the site from Dobson Lane.

The property that the range would sit on is landlocked, and Kramer suggested that the best way to access the site is using a private drive that is shared with the landowner to the west of the shooting range property. That access would be initially gravel, but the commission recommended it be tar and chip or hard surface.

Kramer said they looked into going east, but that it’s “not in the picture”

as they would have to get easement permission from ComEd. It would be “cost prohibitive” to build a road all the way to Church Road to the west, Kramer said.

Greg Peterson, the landowner to the west of the property, told the commission that he did not want a hard surface road on his property. Peterson pointed out that Delaney owns the property north of his and could use that to access Church Road.

“What they wanna do is use my driveway,” Peterson said.

Tim Wallace, a Whitewillow Road resident and the chief of the Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District, said the district requested the property have a Knox Box, which is a master key system used by fire departments to gain entry to a property during an emergency. He said they also requested fire extinguishers on the property, and an annual fire inspection.

Wallace said he has a business on Whitewillow Road, and has had customers visiting his business on Saturdays who ask about the noise coming from the firing range property.

Kramer said nothing the fire department asked for was “unreasonable.” He said there would also be a defibrillator on site.

Clients browse the meats, produce and other goods available during a recent distribution day at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry in Yorkville. Greg Witek, chairman of the new food pantry board, said 300 to 350 families representing between 900 and 1,200 households walk through the pantry’s doors every month in need of everyday items.

Law enforcement sources estimated that between $150,000 and $200,000 was taken from the pantry, but a criminal investigation is still ongoing and Witek said pantry officials are still sorting through documents to determine how much was missing.

A week after the raid, the former executive director of the pantry, Maria Spaeth, and the pantry’s treasurer, Maria’s husband Kenneth Spaeth, both of Yorkville, resigned from their positions at the pantry. On June 21, Maria Spaeth was found dead in her vacation home in Lake Holiday of a prescription drug overdose, according to DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

A Kendall County judge appointed a special prosecutor to the case in July.

State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who previously served on the pantry’s board, said he could be called as a witness in the case. In September, the Yorkville police handed over their completed investigation to Charles Colburn of the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Special Prosecution Unit.

No criminal charges have been filed

in the case.

Asked for any progress on the case this week, Colburn wrote in an email, “Nothing I can release at this time.”

Grant Wegner of Yorkville, an attorney and retired judge who sits on the food pantry board, has been acting as legal counsel and liaison between the pantry board and Colburn, Witek said. “[Wegner] has been in close contact with the special prosecutor, and my understanding is it’s on his list of to-dos, and he’s just got a lot of to-dos,” Witek said. “So he’s getting through the process but he’s not there yet.”

Wegner said the police and prosecutors had all of the organization’s documents, which made it hard for them to begin building a case for civil litigation.

“What initially happened was they went in with a search warrant and took all of our records and documents,” he said. “So before we could pursue any other avenues of recovery, we had to get access to that. So, Colburn and I worked out an agreed court order, where we have some material they can turn over to us and then there are two other boxes

of material that they’re going to hold onto because they have evidentiary value, but we’ll have access, we can look at them and things of that sort.”

Wegner said that he expects that “we’ll pursue civil remedies... to whoever we have a legitimate cause of action against.” Secondly, there is potential insurance coverage related to errors or omissions by nonprofit directors, he said, so by reviewing the documents they will be able to figure out if they can file such a claim.

“The third side of it is completely up to Colburn, and if they do have some criminal charges that develop, obviously one of the things that we’ll be pushing for in any kind of plea agreement or sentencing would be that we get some restitution money,” he said.

However, he said it’s “going to take us some time to figure out who and when and how.”

Wegner said the pantry officials have no estimates right now of how much was stolen, just “ideas,” but that there’s “definitely enough to pursue, I can tell you that.”

Wegner said he understands why the criminal investigation has taken so long, noting that the appellate prosecutor’s office covers cases all over the state when a local prosecutor cannot take the case. He said Colburn has “a lot on his plate, and I get that.”

“Colburn’s all over the state; I get it, it takes a bit longer than if it was local,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll move forward on it and we’ll see what happens.”

Six months after Yorkville police searched the offices of the Kendall County Food Pantry in Yorkville as part of a theft investigation, leaders at the renamed Kendall County Community Food Pantry say they are slowly but surely picking up the pieces.

During a recent distribution day at the pantry, located at 208 Beaver Street in Yorkville’s Fox Industrial Park, families and individuals crowded into a waiting area and then patiently browsed the many food staples available, including meat and produce donated by local grocery stores and other businesses.

Greg Witek, the Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District fire chief and KenCom dispatch executive board chairman who was named chairman of the new food pantry board when the new board and leadership took over Aug. 11, said 300 to 350 families representing between 900 and 1,200 households walk through the pantry’s doors every month in need of everyday items.

Witek said the issues that occurred six months ago did not impact the clients of the pantry.

“Throughout the entire process, if they didn’t read the papers, they would not know anything had happened,” he said. “So even in the darkest days when there was red ink in the checkbook and the volunteers were barely getting by, they were here every Thursday and the clients came and got food and it all worked out.”

On June 1, Yorkville police executed a search warrant on the pantry, located at 208 Beaver St. in Yorkville’s Fox Industrial Park, and a Yorkville residence following reports by pantry volunteers of suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the pantry’s accounts, according to police.

Make office security measures a priority The Kendall County clerk and treasurer and their respective office staffs have asked for more security measures for their offices at the County Office Building at 111 W. Fox St. in downtown Yorkville.

As our news editor Tony Scott reported last week, county board members discussed the request during a meeting last month. Robert “H.D.” Davidson, chairman of the board’s Facilities Management Committee, told his board colleagues that County Clerk Debbie Gillette and County Treasurer Jill Ferko have requested the increased security measures following some incidents with the public in their respective offices that made them “a little uncomfortable.”

discussed potential remedies, including a committee recommendation to install glass shields across counters in the two offices. Another proposal calls for the installation of metal detectors or X-ray machines at entrances to the building and the hiring of security guards. The board, however, made no final decision.

We believe new County Board Chairman Scott Gryder and the newly sworn-in board should make improving security at the county office building an immediate priority. The board should have its newly reconstituted Facilities Management Committee work with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office to develop a workable and economically feasible plan to boost security in the 41-year-old building and

present that plan to the board for final action within the next few months.

The committee should carefully examine the possible use of metal detectors, panic alarms and security guards. While full-time security guards might prove cost-prohibitive, perhaps they could be utilized at select times of the year, such as when property tax bills are due in June and September or when new property assessments are published.

We would remind the board, too, that it would be helpful to find out how other area counties have dealt with the need for increased security in recent years. For example, what, if any, extra security measures have been taken at county offices in Kane, DeKalb, LaSalle and Grundy counties and at what

cost? Assuming that those counties have beefed up their security, have they found it effective and can any of the ideas work here? Which measures are ineffective and should be avoided?

The preamble to the Constitution states that “we the people” are the government. But a succession of national leaders dating back to Ronald Reagan has championed the idea that government is not the solution to our problem but the problem itself. Sadly we have seen the animus and cynicism such comments foster toward the federal government trickle down from Washington, D.C., to government at the local level. In a difficult time for our nation, security measures at the county office building have become a necessary precaution.

that you believe in enough that would make you march forward even though you know you won’t be coming back? If not, are you the kind of person who sits back and waits for other people to do things for what you believe in?

If you’re this kind of person and find yourself sitting around waiting for your next heroes to come along, then my simple advice to you would be to let these heroes fulfill their sworn duty without your constant criticism, without your protest, without your persecution or prosecution before the facts are known, and most certainly without taking their lives from them while they’re having lunch in their squad car.

Unless you’re fully ready to replace them, swear their oath, accept the conse-

quences of that oath, deal with the danger they face every waking moment, or leave the comfort of your sideline existence and join them in their fight, then I politely ask you to stop labeling them as inherently and systematically racist on the basis that a few bad people are able to slip into their ranks from time to time.

I would suggest that you leave the womb of your group think, and start using your own two eyes to see what they see every day. See oppression where it really exists. See the places where human life has no value and where human dignity is reserved only to the powerful. Until you’ve actually seen and done these things, you have no standing for your outrage. You should just remain on the sidelines and quietly wait for them to do what needs to

be done to keep you free and safe.

At each point on its journey from northern Illinois to grain markets, either south to St. Louis or New Orleans, or east to New York, sacks of grain had to be handled numerous times, making grain shipment an extremely labor-intensive business. Individual sacks had to be moved from farm to wagon to Chicago or St. Louis warehouse to steamboat or flatboat to New Orleans or Buffalo warehouse to sailing ship or Erie Canal boat to the grain’s final destination, where it had to be unloaded yet again.

And then the railroads arrived, along with drastic effects, both positive and negative, on Chicago and St. Louis. St. Louis – the Gateway to the West – knew its prominence depended on its access to the Mississippi River’s steamboat traffic. Hundreds of steamboats delivered their cargoes to the Levee – a broad slope along the riverfront – where slaves hauled sacks and barrels and crates to warehouses and between arriving and departing vessels.

The city’s merchants quickly realized that railroads were antithetical to steamboat shipping on which the city relied. They were so opposed to railroads, in fact, that they forbade bridging the river at their city. As a result, the first bridge across the

Liberal and love just don’t go together in the same sentence, let alone qualify the left to lecture the right about love. But more to the point, this is a personal matter.

Maybe it’s just me but I have liberal friends who have been noticeably absent (the word shunned comes to mind) in my life ever since I told them I was going to vote for Trump.

Now, mind you, when they announced to me that they were going to vote for Obama, I felt the same way they looked when I told them I was going to vote for Trump so I know how they feel. But over the next eight years as the liberals proceeded to dismantle our culture, spend recklessly and without positive effect, screw things up so much on the international scene that they caused vast migrations of people....etc., etc. I didn’t turn my back on my liberal friends. The main advance in technology that had the biggest impact on grain shipment was the invention of practical grain elevators, which allowed grain to be removed from all those sacks, slashing labor costs. Joseph Dart, a Buffalo, New York, warehouse owner, is credited with inventing the grain elevator in 1842. Essentially, the commercial grain elevator was a collection of vertical grain bins in which grain of various kinds and quality could be separately stored outside of sacks until shipment. The grain was elevated using steam power to the upper bins, where gravity allowed it to flow through chutes aboard anything from canal boats to rail cars.

While the grain elevator was invented in Buffalo, it was really perfected in Chicago. There, huge grain elevators were quickly built along the Chicago River on South Water Street.

Grain from Chicago’s hinterland was transported to the elevators by wagon, rail, and canal boat, where it was graded by quality and then loaded into the elevated bins, all by machinery instead of on the backs of stevedores.

Which is where geography comes in. Because the Chicago River and Lake Michigan are both pretty much

preferences but I didn’t shun them. We continued to get together periodically and have a nice time. We just didn’t talk about politics. I think they were embarrassed and for my part, I didn’t rub it in.

So, I think the liberals really ought to get off their attacks against conservatives for being mean and heartless. I think conservatives know more about love than liberals will ever know.

The Mississippi floods on a regular basis, meaning elevators at St. Louis could not be built along the river or they’d be flooded one or more times every year. Geography, coupled with the city’s disdain for railroads, meant St. Louis was quickly supplanted as a major grain transshipment point. Cut off from rail lines heading east, the rest of its economy was harmed, too.

Meanwhile, Chicago’s economy, based on roads, canals, railroads and lake shipping exploded, making it the premier city in the nation’s Middle West. Thanks to its extensive transportation web, Chicago’s hinterland underwent a massive expansion that, in economic terms at least, eventually took in entire states including Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The grain, timber, livestock, iron ore and other commodities that flowed in a seemingly never-ending and always growing stream into the city by the lake led to at least one historian to dub it, without exaggeration, “Nature’s Metropolis.”

So, a week into meteorological winter and a couple weeks before astronomical winter, as farmers begin wrapping up another season, another year’s crops are well on the way to markets near and far. It’s the end of another year’s cycle that’s been going on here in the Fox Valley for more than 180 years thanks both to accidents of geography and the genius of people who were interested in making a buck and who ended up changing the world.

This year’s harvest season is largely ended, but truckloads of grain still stream from area farms to grain elevators or directly to Illinois River terminals as the end of the crop goes to market.

This “Golden Stream,” as author William Cronon described it, moves corn and soybeans from field to temporary storage to market in a smooth flow that is a marvel of efficiency, one that would astonish our pioneer farmer ancestors.

In the first half of the 19th century, grain traveled to market in burlap bags and cloth sacks. Before it could be shipped off the farm, corn had to be shelled, and small grains – oats, wheat, rye, and barley – had to be threshed (removed from the stalks) and winnowed to separate the grain from the chaff. Then it was placed in cloth sacks, which were sewn shut, loaded aboard wagons and hauled to the nearest market.

Before railroads pushed west of Chicago to the Fox Valley in the late 1840s, that meant taking horsedrawn wagonloads of full grain sacks over the terrible roads of the era to the South Water Street market. There it was inspected and stored in warehouses until it was sold, either to a local user or to be loaded aboard a ship and sent to the eastern markets.

Farmers nearer to the Illinois River hauled their wagonloads of bulging grain sacks over to the Illinois River, where it could be stored in warehouses until loaded aboard steamboats at Peru – most often the head of navigation on the river – so it could be shipped south to St. Louis, or even all the way to New Orleans. Continued from page 3 Witek said the volunteers stuck with the pantry even during the controversies. He said that according to pantry Director Tandy Pinter, volunteer inquiries through its new website, including those who want to do temporary volunteer shifts, have been more than steady.

“There is a record high in terms of people who want to help,” he said.

Witek said church groups, school groups and others will take temporary shifts, and then there are those who come to the pantry and just say they want to help. He gave the example of a 50-something couple who stopped in the pantry in July.

“He had recently retired and they live in Oswego, and said we want to help, and they have been here every single Thursday like clockwork since the beginning of July,” he said.

“They’re a part of the family now.”

Witek said it’s difficult to tell how the donations compare, for example, to previous years because the records are not complete.

“The disappointing part of analyzing the finances is that we just don’t have any history to work with,” he said. “There was incomplete record-keeping of the finances before the new board took over, and what was done has this aura of ‘Well, is that all of it?’ And we know the answer is no, it’s not. The stuff that we do have is inadequate and it’s also missing dollars.”

He said the new board has been in the process of building a new budget.

“We’re on our way to building a budget but it will be a slow, slow go,” he said.

Witek said the pantry has paid off most of its debt – except for a truck loan – and has money in the bank.

Newcomers are welcome any time. about the finances because in the past, every time finances were discussed, the volunteers were told ‘Well, you know, we’re barely making it, we hardly have money for this or that or the other thing,’” he said. “Now, the good news I delivered to them today is, we are a month ahead in our payments to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, that’s our main food source, all of our debt is completely paid off except for a traditional truck loan.”

He continued, “We have several months of cash in the bank, the bills are all paid, it’s a huge blessing. The going commentary for that is we know that all the incoming donations are all making it into the bank and are all being used on bona fide bills. That’s about as delicately as I could possibly say it.”

There is still pain from the incidents, however, Witek said.

“We’ve got 91 volunteers who are all hurting from that whole process,” he said.

Witek said that Maria Spaeth did good work in the county, but that there is a “black mark” on that work now.

“No doubt, over the course of almost 30 years she did some wonderful things for the county, no doubt, and I never want to take that away from her,” he said. “It doesn’t make the bad any less bad. Wonderful stuff got done, but unfortunately it’s got a black mark on it.”

When reached via cellphone this week, Kenneth Spaeth said he could not comment on the investigation or other aspects of the case, but that he wished the organization well.

“All I can say is that I wish nothing but the best for the food pantry,” he said. “It’s just a terrific organization, and I wish nothing but the best for the people that are running it as well as for the patrons. That was something that was near and dear to Maria’s heart and I know she’d want to see it prosper and continue on without her.”

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board unanimously chose Scott Gryder of Oswego as its chairman Monday evening during an organizational meeting at the county’s Historic Courthouse in Yorkville.

In addition to Gryder being named chairman, replacing former Chairman John Shaw, newly elected and re-elected board members were sworn into office by Judge Melissa Barnhart.

New board members Matt Kellogg of Yorkville, Tony Giles of Oswego and Audra Hendrix of Yorkville, as well as board member John Purcell of Yorkville, were sworn into office. New

Coroner Jacquie Purcell was sworn into office last Wednesday along with State’s Attorney Eric Weis and Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson.

Also during Monday’s meeting, board member Lynn Cullick was chosen unanimously as the board’s vice chairman. Board member Judy Gilmour was chosen as the Forest Preserve District president, Matthew Prochaska as the district vice president, and Elizabeth Flowers as the district secretary.

Following his selection as chairman, Gryder addressed the audience.

“Congratulations to all of you who were sworn in tonight,” he said. “The hard work begins tomorrow night [Tuesday’s board meeting]. Enjoy it.

It’s fun, it’s a huge responsibility.”

Area residents of all ages enjoyed Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas event last Friday, Dec. 2. Organized by the Plano Chamber of Commerce, the holiday celebration featured a parade, visits with Santa, a performance by the Emily G. Johns School band, lighting of the downtown Christmas tree and the presentation of the Ross Greiter Memorial Spirit Award. In addition to the festivities, food items and monetary donations were collected at the train depot for distribution to less fortunate families in town. Students and staff at Emily G. Johns School in Plano recently collected money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The school theme was “Help Josh Squash MD” in honor of sixth-grade student Joshua Schneider, who has a form of muscular dystrophy. The students and staff collected $2,165.76 to donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The pictures highlight some of the activities that took place during the fundraiser including wearing PJs, wearing Josh’s favorite color (red), selling ice cream treats during lunch, wearing superhero or character costumes, wearing hats, and selling water and Gatorade for the students and coffee for the staff from a beverage cart. Police said Mattson’s vehicle left the roadway and struck several trees and a utility pole. Police said Mattson sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated at an area hospital. Police said she has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Warrant arrest Plano police arrested Brandon D. Murphy, 28, of the 400 block of South Lew Street, Plano, Dec. 1 in the area of the 200 block of East South Street. Police said Murphy was wanted on a Kendall County warrant. He subsequently posted bond and was released pending a court appearance.

Domestic battery arrest Plano police arrested Rodney Rubio, 51, of the 200 block of North Oak Street, Plano, on a charge of domestic battery at his residence Dec. 1 at 1:05 a.m. Police said they were summoned to the Rubio residence on a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, police said officers were told that Rubio drove a truck into a van in the driveway of the residence and then pushed the van into a closed garage door. Upon further investigation, police said, they learned that he had committed an act of domestic battery before leaving the scene. Police took him into custody later in the day. Police said Rubio faces two count charges of domestic battery, one for causing bodily harm and the other for making contact of an insulting or provoking nature. He was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending a bond call. Police said their investigation into the incident is continuing.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT A CHILD’S SPECIAL GRIEF Sometimes a child’s expression of grief can startle adults. It is not uncommon for young children who lose a parent or sibling to resume playing soon after the death, as if nothing had happened. They may also make statements that seem glib to adults and ask the same questions over and over.

They may act in aggressive or hostile ways and seem not to care about the death. Within a few weeks, they may begin asking when the family will get a replacement for the lost parent or sibling.

When this happens, it is important for adults to remember that intense emotions are hard for young children to sustain. In these situations, the children’s behavior is largely a defense. That’s understandable, otherwise the reality of death would be too overwhelming to face.

Denying grief will not make it go away. On the other hand, children have a natural resiliency that can help them adjust.

1st-year coach Sean Masten relocates from Galesburg

“We really focused in on taking care of ourselves, working as hard as we could in our own matches and doing the best we can.”

Sean Masten Plano wrestling coach 21-13 at 120 pounds last year, and is currently at 126 to start, while Garcia, a junior, will wrestle at 132.

With low numbers, Plano will forfeit two lightweight slots, as well as 189, 220 and 285. Those 30 forfeit points were evident in Plano’s opening dual matches.

“We’re pretty solid 120 through 160,” Masten said.

Plano opened the year with a 2-1 showing at the triple dual on Nov. 30,

defeating Mooseheart 39-3 and Mendota 35-12, but took a 43-24 loss to Dwight.

On Dec. 3, Plano went 0-3 at Yorkville with losses to the host Foxes (64-18), Minooka (48-3) and Rock Island (60-6).

“We’re forfeiting five or six matches, so it’s going to be tough to win a meet. We really focused in on taking care of ourselves, working as hard as we could in our own matches and doing the best we can,” Masten said.

“Against Yorkville, we wrestled outstanding. We had some good matches.

Minooka took us by surprise, but Rock Island was in the same conference as Galesburg so I knew those guys. I knew what we were getting into, and you can see by the score, it caught up with us.”

Plano (2-4) will embark on an extended road trip following the Reaper Classic, traveling to Coal City and Oregon next week for duals before the DeKalb Dual Team Tournament Dec. 29-30. Plano returns home on Jan. 5, hosting Reed-Custer and Streator.

First-year wrestling coach Sean Masten still has a thing or two to learn about the Plano program, but he’ll get a few big lessons with the arrival of the 20-team Reaper Classic this weekend.

“I’m excited to host a tournament like that,” Masten said. “Overall, it’ll just give the guys some great mat experience.”

Masten joined the Plano program for the start of the 2006-07 season after spending the last four years as the Galesburg head wrestling coach. He currently works with a small 12-wres-

tler lineup, and is in search of an assistant coach. Still, Masten is optimistic for the potential of this rebuilding team.

“It’s definitely a change. I’m used to high schools of 2,200, 2,800, and Galesburg was 1,300 – being here at Plano, we’re about 720. It’s not a bad thing, but it is what it is,” Masten said. “The tradition is great and the community support is great. We are a little down on the size of our team, but the positive thing is the youth program and the junior high program is very strong again.”

Plano returns two 2016 state qualifiers in sophomore Nico Nunez and senior Jake Krotz, as well as 2015 state qualifier Ivan Garcia, who missed much of last season with a broken ankle.

Nunez placed third in the 113-pound weight class at the Class 1A state tournament to cap a 38-8 freshman season.

He is now stepping into the 120-pound bracket to start the season. Krotz went

On paper, a meeting between two of the area’s top girls basketball teams should have been a competitive game on the hardwood.

In reality, Yorkville (6-1) staged an 18-0 lead against Plano (5-2) and cruised to a 75-15 victory over the Reapers on Saturday night.

Plano was without its top two scorers, as sisters Makayli Vann and Makenzie Vann were out of state for a family wedding.

“I was hoping it was really just a ploy on Plano’s part and that they were actually going to be here, but we knew ahead of time,” Yorkville coach Kim Wentsis said. “They really add a lot that team and without them it was tough for them.”

“Most of our offense runs through those two. Makenzie has been our point guard all year and Makayli is such a scoring threat,” Plano coach Greg Gould said. “When you have playmakers like that, it allows other girls to get open because defense puts so much focus on them. I don’t want to dwell on who’s not here.

Our kids played hard, and I’m as proud of them as I’ve ever been. It’s not easy when you’re losing and it’s not easy when nothing seems to be going right, to continue to play hard. Our girls played 84 feet of defense the whole time, and that’s all you can ask.”

Lindsay Harrison (14 points) and Jasmine Bracero (14 points) helped get Yorkville out to a fast start as both scored seven points in the opening quarter. Bracero’s three-pointer pushed Yorkville’s lead to 18-0 before Plano’s Bradi Gann put the Reapers on the scoreboard at the 2:14 mark.

Yorkville’s starters all took a seat on the bench late in the first quarter and were sporad-

ically rotated into the game through the next two periods.

The Foxes stretched their lead to 29-2 as Katie Nolan and Lily Guerra opened the second quarter scoring, and Yorkville built a 47-13 halftime lead.

“In the first half, we were trying to give a lot of people a bunch of minutes, and in the second half we tried to switch things up because you never know down the line when someone is going to get in foul trouble and we’ll have different lineups,” Wentsis said.

Plano opted for a running clock in the second half, did not score in the third quarter and added two more points in the fourth period to close the night.

“Give the credit to Yorkville; they’re probably one of the top 20 teams in the state right now. They knocked off West Aurora and beat Kaneland easily in the last week,” Gould said.

Yorkville is now on a threegame win streak after defeating West Aurora and Kaneland earlier in the week. The Foxes will host Geneseo on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

“This was a nice continuation of our momentum because I really thought we played our best game against Kaneland,” Wentsis said. “Hopefully this also builds confidence in some of our role players who rotate in for 10 or 15 minutes because they got off a lot of shots. They were good looks, and they were making them.”

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Nothing could compare to the thrilling sophomore boys basketball game that took four overtime periods to settle, but the varsity boys game between Yorkville and visiting Plano had its moments.

The Reapers (2-0) withstood a third-quarter run by the Foxes (2-4) which tied the game at 34, but Plano closed out the period on an 8-2 stretch to build momentum toward a 57-52 victory on Saturday afternoon.

“It felt like we were in control, even when they came back and tied it. We took a deep breath and got back to doing what we’re doing,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “I really see us developing a confident team. It’s nice to see a bunch of seniors out there play like seniors.”

Although Yorkville established an early 4-2 lead off a pair of baskets by Austin Avery, the Foxes fell behind 7-5 and trailed for the remainder of the night.

Plano’s Anthony Martinez and Nathan Shead hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to give the Reapers momentum on the way to a 16-7 lead.

“In the first quarter when we gave up 16 right off the bat, we were digging ourselves a hole,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said.

“We’re giving up long threes.”

Ethan Kee opened the second quarter with his own long-range shot – Plano’s fourth of the game – to start the second quarter and extend the Reapers’ lead, 19-7.

Will Benson knocked in four points for Plano as the Reapers showed a diverse offense with seven different players reaching the scoring column, and Shead (13 points) knocked in a total of three 3-pointers in the second period.

Moore broke out late in the second quarter to score six points and bring Yorkville within three, 26-23.

Plano went into halftime holding a five-point lead after Israel Adeoti found Maisonet (19 points) inside for a successful layup.

Back-to-back baskets from Moore (20 points) helped Yorkville tie the game with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter, but following a Plano timeout, the Reapers got to work.

Shead hit a 3-pointer and Maisonet scored the next two field goals for a seven-point swing.

Plano’s lead swelled to 49-38 early in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer from Jake Eberhart (13 points) and five more points from Moore suddenly cut Yorkville’s lead, 51-49.

“We put 50 points up, and that’s the most we’ve scored all season. I’m proud of our kids,” Dunn said. “We were without our point guard [Jonathan Suarez] tonight with pink eye. We just talked about the next man up. ...

We got beat in the first half defensively, but we did some good things to get ourselves back in the game.”

Following a Plano timeout, the Reapers hit six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

“They’re a good defensive team,” Kee said. “They got into guys and didn’t give us a lot of room. We really struggled to move the ball a lot. ... They’re a tough team and it was a nice, physical game – just the way a Plano-Yorkville game should be.”

Plano 81, Reed Custer 52: The Reapers opened the season on Friday with a lopsided victory in the Interstate Eight Conference kickoff.

Shead had 23 points and nine rebounds, Brandon Contreras had 12 points and Elijah Maisonet had nine points and 10 rebounds.
