Rockin’ Christmas returning Events planned for next weekend in Plano

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano’s Rockin’ Christmas program will be held downtown during the first weekend of December, Rich Healy, executive director of the Plano Chamber of Commerce, told city council members at their Monday meeting.

“It’s a major event for Plano,” he said, noting that it will start at 5 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 2, with a parade downtown.

The parade will start at the United Methodist Church parking lot, go down James Street to Main Street, and end at the Railroad Depot at about 5:30 p.m.

“Santa will be joining us in the parade, so if you have children or grandchildren, bring them along to see Santa downtown,” said Healy.

Children can visit with Santa from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Plano Community Library, 15 W. North St., and will receive a small Christmas-related gift.

Parents are encouraged to bring a camera.

From 5:30 to 6 p.m., members of the Emily G. Johns School band will perform at the train depot.

At 6 p.m., Mayor Bob Hausler will pull the switch to light the traditional downtown Christmas tree. “It’s rather spectacular because the downtown is dark until he throws the switch which lights the tree and the street lights. It’s really quite festive,” Healy said.

Following the lighting, this year’s recipient of the Ross Greiter Memorial Spirit Award will be announced. The award started out as just the Rockin’ Christmas Spirit Award and was presented to an individual who showed the Christmas spirit throughout the year.

But later it was renamed in memory of Ross Greiter, 19, who died Oct. 2, 2009, after having a heart transplant at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Greiter was a 2008 graduate of Plano High School and was attending Waubonsee Community College at the time of his death. He was an avid runner and a diehard Cubs fan, and enjoyed working out and playing baseball.

Following the award presentation, downtown businesses will be open for parents who want to get an early start on their Christmas shopping, Healy said, adding that they will have snacks and treats for the visitors.

The depot will be open until midnight for residents to drop off nonperishable food items for the food boxes volunteers will be distributing to less fortunate families in town on Sunday.

Gas pump damaged A motorist drove off from a gas pump at a gas station in the 2500 block of Light Road in Oswego Township with the gas hose still connected to the vehicle Nov. 15 at 2:48 p.m., according to county sheriff’s deputies. Slap on the wrist for township

Salute to Veterans breakfast thanks

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis has given Oswego Township officials a collective slap on the wrist for violating the Illinois Open Meetings Act. As our news editor, Tony Scott, reported last week, Weis notified Township Supervisor Jim Detzler in a Nov. 8 letter that the township failed to properly post an agenda to a township board meeting held Sept. 13.

The act requires the board and all local governing boards to publicly display their meeting agendas at the site of the meeting “not less than 48 hours in advance” of the meeting in question.

Weis, however, noted the township board has since taken steps to correct their violation of the law “by conducting separate meetings to allow for notice of the public of the meetings and items to be considered at the meeting. The public was in attendance and the action items were subsequently approved by the [township board] at these subsequent meetings.”

As a result of the board’s follow-up actions, Weis said, he has determined the board’s actions “mitigate any violations of the Open Meetings Act sufficient such that no further action is required by my office.”

Weis recommended Detzler, township trustees and the township clerk review the Open Meetings Act training that is required of all appointed and elected officials and available on the Illinois Attorney General’s website. In addition, he strongly encouraged township officials to review with their attorney their procedures to prevent any future violations of the act.

Since 2012, state law has required all elected and appointed members of public bodies – including townships – that are subject to the Open Meetings Act to complete online training in the act no later than 90 days after taking the oath of office. All local officials should welcome the requirement since the act is intended to promote transparency in government.

We believe Weis has done what he can to encourage township officials to comply with the act. Unfortunately, in situations like this where a clear violation of the act has occurred, we wish Weis could mandate that all of the officials involved successfully complete the Attorney General’s Open Meetings Act training a second time. It’s evident that for Oswego Township officials their training in the act did not sink in the first time.

A year later, in the autumn of 1620, the Pilgrims, Puritans who fled what they believed to be thoroughly Godless societies in England and Holland, arrived in the New World hoping to settle in Virginia. Unfortunately, their navigation was a bit off, the weather was stormy, and the Mayflower and its 102 passengers struck land at Cape Cod, much farther north than planned.

After exploring for a while, they decided to settle around what eventually became Plymouth Plantation, the first colony in New England.

That first winter was the last one for many Pilgrims. The ones who survived did so thanks mostly to the generosity of the local Native Americans – who, as yet, didn’t realize what these newcomers had in store for them. The survivors planted crops the next spring with the assistance of their neighbors, the Wampanoag Tribe under their leader Massasoit.

In particular, the Indians taught the English how to guarantee a successful corn harvest by including a codfish in each hill as fertilizer.

After the successful harvest of 1621, Massachusetts Gov. William Bradford decreed a day of thanksgiving be set aside to thank God for their survival.

Bradford and the Pilgrims invited their Wampanoag benefactors, including Massasoit and 92 of his people to the meal, which included turkeys shot by the Pilgrims and food the English had raised, including popcorn.

When President Franklin Roosevelt decided to move Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday, I’ll bet my dad was not pleased.

He probably wasn’t upset because he didn’t like Thanksgiving, of course, but rather because he well and truly disliked President Roosevelt, primarily because of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. In fact, he disliked the president so much that he almost always refused to carry a Roosevelt dime in his pocket, changing them for Mercury dimes as quickly as possible.

But despite the grumbling of one Illinois farmer, Roosevelt was well-liked enough to win four terms in office.

Even so, when Roosevelt announced during the Great Depression that henceforth Thanksgiving would be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November instead of the last, my dad wasn’t the only one upset. After all, it had been the nation’s first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, who declared in 1863 that a national holiday of Thanksgiving should be held on the last Thursday of November.

We all know the first Thanksgiving in the New World was cooked up by the Pilgrims following their first successful harvest in 1621. Unfortunately, like a lot of historical conventional wisdom, that’s really not true.

Actually, 38 extremely relieved Englishmen who had arrived on the shores of the new colony of Virginia in 1619 aboard the tiny, 35-foot-long ship Margaret thanked their lucky stars for their survival during a heartfelt Thanksgiving service on Nov. 30 of that year.

They’d spent 75 days at sea aboard the Margaret, but agreed to wait four more days until they arrived at their true destination, Berkley Hundred, a few miles up the James River to dis-

Course takes look at mobile health care program Delivering quality health care cannot be done without collaboration.

This occurs every day in a hospital when a doctor calls a specialist to identify the proper treatment for an issue or when a social worker plans a discharge based on the recommendations from a nurse.

When each profession brings its specialized knowledge to the table, innovation and progress can occur. Over the last year, the health care and educational industries have collaborated in several ways to improve health care right here in the Fox Valley.

One innovation that is being implemented nationally is the Mobile Integrated Healthcare – Community Paramedicine program. MIH-CP programs send paramedics into the homes of patients to help with chronic disease management or to follow up on post-hospital discharge in order to prevent hospital admissions or readmissions, and to improve patients’ experience of care.

As MIH-CP enters northern Illinois, the fire and medical industries are preparing to take steps to change how we deliver emergency health care.

Waubonsee Community College supported these efforts through a Telligen Community Initiative grant awarded to the college in 2016 to further these

This course examines the work of community paramedics as members of a distinct community that works in collaboration with local public health agencies, hospitals and fire departments in order to serve the community. This course teaches skills that paramedics need when working in this brand-new role, and it provides an introduction to community paramedicine for firefighters, hospital administrators and other interested stakeholders.

The delivery of this course was supported by multiple levels of the health care and educational fields. Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital hosted the initial course at its campus, while the second course was offered at Waubonsee’s newly remodeled Aurora Fox Valley Campus.

course in preparing students for this new role in communities, and it will be added to a national study of the curriculum. The results of this study will inform the national curriculum, which, in turn, will inform the Illinois Department of Public Health and medical institutions across the nation as to how the program should go forward in the future.

Lastly, Southern Fox Valley Emergency Management System sponsored the application for continuing education for participants.

Evan Darger, a North Aurora paramedic who is an instructor in Waubonsee’s paramedic program, taught the first sessions of Introduction to Community Paramedic this fall.

“I think the impact our program has is as unique to the individual student as the experience they bring in the door,” Darger said. “For students who have been involved in health care for years, it can serve to challenge their existing paradigms of the health care system. For students just beginning their journey, it can be the first exposure to the very real problems the populations they serve are faced with.

The hope is that the real impact of classes like this will be on the future of health care delivery models as it brings different backgrounds to the

same table to ask how we can do a better job bringing the appropriate care to the populations that need it most.”

I know I speak for everyone at Waubonsee when I say that I feel honored and privileged to collaborate with so many valued community and national institutions to bring innovative education and programs to our community to improve health care for all.

Annual Franklin Mall Christmas Project accepting donations PLANO RECORD Nonperishable food and household supplies are among the most needed donation items for this year’s Franklin Mall Christmas Project.

The project is intended to help local residents suffering from the adverse economy, those suffering from illnesses and those facing other difficulties.

Individuals, groups, churches, families and businesses are encouraged to contribute in every way possible to the project.

Area residents can make donations by placing them in the red tubs now in businesses and other locations throughout the Sandwich community.

The local effort, started by the late Frankie and Peg Mall, has been collecting from some and sharing with others since 1954. It’s been directed by the Sandwich Lions Club since the late Frankie Mall became ill many years ago. One 47-year member of the Sandwich Lions Club recalls it was when Harold Olson was president of the club.

The project has grown from taking a few boxes of groceries to deserving families in the beginning to now taking sustenance and nonperishables to 250 addresses within Sandwich School District 430.

Formerly, families with more than a couple children were given two boxes, but last year there wasn’t enough to leave more than one at each stop.

The Somonauk Public Library is dividing the goods received from library patrons who are paying overdue fines with nonperishable food rather than money.

The final day for picking up the tubs will be Wednesday, Dec. 14. The

nonperishable food and household supplies are packed starting at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Sandwich Fire Department. Groceries picked up at donor sites are stored in one room of the fire station that month.

Volunteers, such as the fire science class offered at Indian Valley Vocational Center and taught at the fire station, often prepare for the flurry of packing by sorting the goods that afternoon into stacks of peanut butter, dry cereals, dry pasta, packaged dinners, canned fruits and vegetables.

Financial support is also appreciated and necessary since every box of food will also contain a gift card good at Art’s Food Market in Sandwich, so perishables such as eggs, fresh fruit, milk and meat can be purchased by the recipient. The gift cards don’t cover cigarettes or alcohol.

The boxes of nonperishables and gift cards will be delivered on the morning of Dec. 17, when volunteers take the boxes to families and individuals who can use a lift.

Although sweet potatoes are an important part of our holiday meals, this orange vegetable provides a versatile option for any breakfast, lunch or dinner.

“Sweet potatoes are naturally fat-free, low in sodium and a good source of vitamins A, C, potassium and fiber,” said University of Illinois Extension Educator Jessica Gadomski, a registered dietitian for SNAP-Education.

“This edible root, often confused with yams, deserves more than just a place at your Thanksgiving table.”

Sweet potatoes, currently in-season here in Illinois, make a healthier substitute for white potatoes in most recipes. They can be baked, boiled, grilled, mashed, roasted, steamed, or even microwaved.

They can be eaten raw, too.

According to MyPlate, the current dietary guidance provided by the United States Department of Agriculture,

green vegetables, starchy vegetables, red and orange vegetables, beans and peas, and other vegetables.”

The USDA recommends children between the ages of 2 to 8 years consume 2.5 to 3 cups of red-orange vegetables each week, and those age 9 and older should strive for between 4 to 6 cups per week.

“Whether prepared as snacks, side dishes or the main event, sweet potatoes are a healthy, tasty choice any time of year,” said Gadomski.

The healthy choice isn’t always the easy choice, especially on a limited budget.

Most of us do a fall cleaning to collect the last of that summer pollen and dust, check the batteries in the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and make sure windows and doors are sealed tight. With these tasks complete, we can breathe easy for the winter. Or can we?

Radon, the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers, could also be trapped in your home, according to Jay Solomon, energy and environmental stewardship educator with University of Illinois Extension. The only way to know if your home has elevated radon levels is to test it. Once you know you have an issue, installation of a mitigation system is usually fairly straightforward and not cost prohibitive.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer has the highest mortality rates among cancers. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

An estimated 1,160 people develop radon-related lung cancer each year in Illinois, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Extended exposure to elevated indoor concentrations of radon gas in our homes is a major culprit. Elevated radon concentrations have been found in homes in every county in the state. Plano High School recently announced its students and staff of the month for November.

PHS staff nominated students for Student of the Month for the month of November. Students are nominated for PRIDE behavior (Personal Responsibility, Respect, Involved Academically, Demonstrates safe behavior, and Excellence in what they do).

Some reasons for nomination include exemplifying determination and perseverance by striving for excellence in classes, helping other students, making a great effort during Pink Week, being a leader in class, having an excellent attitude, taking on an additional role during a competition, showing self-motivation and being instrumental in the success of Homecoming events.

Students of the Month for November are Jordan Wade, Abigail Way, Aaron Rodriguez, Kayvon Crenshaw, Tomeisha Harding, Mason Larsen, MaKayli Vann, Brian Morales and Edin Lopez.

Students and administration nominated staff members for Staff Member of the Month for November. Reasons for nomination included directing a great play, communication, preparation and hard work for testing and college visits, balancing different responsibilities along with extracurricular activities, continued support and dedication to our students, and excellent work with the band for fundraising and preparing for a trip to Disney World.

Staff Members of the Month for November are Lisa Esmond, Susan Webb, Derek Sturn, Rita Hines, Sue Gerardot, Cassie Chwalek, Eve Phillips, Sean Masten and Doug Holm.

Students and staff members received a certificate and a breakfast in their honor.

The staff and student of the month process is coordinated by Kate Collingbourne, social worker with Student Services at Plano High School. This process is part of the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) in place at Plano High School.

Holiday Express lights up Dec. weekends SHAW MEDIA The Holiday Express train is welcoming all aboard during the first three weekends in December at the Fox Valley Park District’s Blackberry Farm for its Yuletide celebration, with thousands of glittering lights, festive activities and the jolly presence of Santa throughout.

For eight days in December, the holiday spirit comes to life from 2 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 3-4, Dec. 9-11 and Dec. 16-18, when the decorated train will run continuously around sparkling Lake Gregory. Friday hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 9 and 16. Holiday Express Special Needs Night is set for Dec. 2 at Blackberry Farm.

More than 60,000 Christmas lights (3½ miles worth) will illuminate the sparkling pioneer village, with shooting stars flashing above Blackberry Creek and holiday cartoon characters (Frosty, etc.) gracing the tour of Lake Gregory.

Prosecutors say he battered deputies at jail

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com An Aurora man who allegedly threatened to commit a massacre last year, firing a rifle at Oswego police officers, has been charged for a second time in the past month with battering a sheriff’s deputy in the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Taylor J. Cano, 26, has been in custody awaiting trial at the jail, following a brief hospital stay, since the incident that occurred Aug. 29, 2015, in front of a home where he was staying in the 100 block of Ashlawn Avenue, Oswego.

On Nov. 15 at approximately 6:10 p.m., sheriff’s deputies investigated a report of an aggravated battery at the jail, sheriff’s deputies said.

During the investigation, police allege Cano battered two corrections deputies while they tried to retrieve Cano’s food tray from his cell. Both deputies were treated for cuts and bruises and released.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Cano with two counts of aggravated battery, both Class 2 felonies.

Cano also faces charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer at the jail from an incident Nov. 2, when Cano allegedly battered and tossed feces at a deputy.

In addition, Cano faces charges of possessing a weapon while in custody of the jail, when he was accused Jan.

30 of fabricating a stabbing instrument out of a toothbrush; the weapon was seized without incident, police reported.

From the 2015 incident, Cano faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

In the August 2015 incident, two Oswego police officers shot and wounded Cano on Ashlawn Avenue in the village’s Cedar Glen subdivision.

State’s Attorney Eric Taylor J. Weis determined the Cano actions of the officers to be justified. During his investigation, Weis said that prior to the incident Cano had several conversations with KenCom (911) dispatchers concerning his intent to commit harm against other individuals that day.

Cano also told dispatchers he was armed and would harm those who would come to help him.

Cano was found unfit to stand trial last November, but was found fit to stand trial in September, following a stay in a downstate mental hospital, according to court records.

Cano is scheduled for a hearing Nov. 30 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville in front of Judge Timothy McCann.

Reapers post 3-1 record at Somonauk tourney After a season-opening loss to Newark, the Plano girls basketball team (3-1) won its next three games in the Tim Humes Breakout Tournament in Somonauk.

On Nov. 15, Plano reached the win column with a 60-46 victory over Serena after holding the Huskers to five points in the fourth quarter. Makayli Vann had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead Plano, while Lexi Tisberger had eight points and 12 rebounds and Bradi Gann had 11 rebounds.

On Nov. 17, Plano scored 29 points in the first quarter and another 29 points in the second quarter en route to a 78-49 win over Hinckley-Big Rock.

Makayli Vann scored 29 points with 11 rebounds, Makenzie Vann had 14 points and Demetra Phylactos added 12 points. Gann had eight points, seven rebounds and five steals.

SENIORS READY TO LEAD Reapers aiming to repeat last season’s historic success

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Despite graduating three key starters from last year’s historic Class 3A regional championship team, a strong senior class moves up in the ranks to lead the Plano boys basketball team for the 2016-17 season.

Seniors Elijah Maisonet and Anthony Martinez headline a talented senior class that includes East Aurora transfer Nate Shead as well as Brandon Contreras, Will Benson, Austin Walton, Ethan Kee, Jermaine Boyd and Israel Adeoti.

“Getting Nate Shead back into our program is pretty big, and he’s going to be our leader scoring the basketball,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “He went to East Aurora last year, but he’s back where he should be. Juniors Michael Baltazar, Andy Velazquez and Keegan Shettles, sophomores Bryson Schmidt, Kajon Smith and Desmond Williams and freshman Cedric Walton complete the 16-player roster.

Plano finished 19-10 last season, reaching a Class 3A sectional for the first time in program history. The Reapers finished in a tie for second place in the Interstate Eight Conference with a 9-2 record.

“We learned a lot from the seniors last year and we have a good group of guys that are as talented – if not a little more than last year,” Martinez said.

“Our chemistry is good and it’s going to be getting better throughout the season.”

While most teams are opening play this week, Plano is hoping to take full advantage of its delayed season opener, which won’t arrive until Dec. 2 when the Reapers host Reed-Custer in the I-8 opener.

“We just keep pushing each other to get better, and that’s what is keeping practice fun,” Maisonet said. “I think we have a really good shot to win conference, and we have to prove it in that first game that we’re a team to deal with.”

A busy December includes the Spring Valley Hall tournament Dec. 12-16, with games against Rochelle, Mendota, Hall and Rock Falls before the annual Plano Christmas Classic takes place Dec. 26-30.
