Police SUV purchase approved

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano Police Chief Jonathan Whowell finally got his SUV in place of a fourdoor sedan.

Earlier this year he had asked the council to purchase an all-wheel drive Ford SUV to replace a four-door sedan that had to be junked because it had more than 200,000 miles on it and the transmission had failed on it.

He had planned to purchase a 2016 Ford four-door car from Terry’s Ford in Peotone through the government’s fleet account for $24,048 plus the cost of accessories to make it usable for police work.

Whowell said he had budgeted $25,660 for the vehicle, and $10,000 for installation of the accessories.

The new cost will be $27,655 for the vehicle and $13,125 for the accessories for a total cost of $40,780 which is $5,120 over budget. He said he will find a way to cut expenses for other department items to make up for the extra cost of this vehicle.

The council vote to approve the purchase was unanimous.

New plan OK’d for Groot transfer site

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com The Plano City Council approved a landscaping plan for the Groot Industries Inc. solid waste transfer station on Eldamain Road in a 6-2 vote Monday evening.

Two aldermen, Bob Hyde and Ben Eaton, voted against the plan.

The original plan was for the owner to build a 14-foot concrete wall to screen the facility from Eldamain Road. But shortly after the plan was approved, the original owner sold the business to Groot Industries, who then asked for an amendment to the landscape plan.

Groot submitted a revised landscaping plan to the council at the Sept. 15 meeting, asking that they be allowed to plant no less than 17 evergreen trees to shield the facility and parked trailers from Eldamain Road.

According to the revised plan, Groot

could store up to seven filled or partially filled and covered trailers inside their building. If there is a need to store more trailers, Groot would be allowed to store up to seven more filled or partially filled and covered trailers outside, according to their modified plan. The requested trees would screen the trailers from the road, company officials said in their request.

According to the revised plan, Groot would be allowed to park the trailers outside for up to 24 hours, at which time they must be removed.

At the September council meeting, aldermen insisted that the trees be at least 14 feet tall when planted to screen the facility from Eldamain Road. And if any of them die, Groot must replace them with new trees at least 14 feet tall, the aldermen said.

Monday night, Hyde and Eaton both voted against the revised plan, saying they preferred the original agreement

to build the 14-foot wall. They said they approved planting the trees, but wanted them to screen the solid concrete wall.

Hyde said everyone was happy when they approved the original contract with the former owners.

“It was a local company so we felt good about having them. We approved the contract and everything was fine.”

“They asked for an extension, we approved it, and three weeks later they sold the company, without telling anyone,” Eaton said.

“The wall was part of the original agreement, but when they began building the facility they knew they weren’t putting a wall in because there was no foundation for one,” Hyde said. “Then they said they wanted to put trees in.

Hopefully the trees will work, but I just don’t trust them. That’s why I wanted to make sure tonight that the contract says 14-foot trees must be planted.”

When the purchase was discussed at an earlier meeting, a resident suggested the city purchase an SUV rather than another squad. He said they are better for the snowy winters we often have here. The additional cost would be about $2,500 he said.

Mayor Bob Hausler said he was opposed to spending an additional $2,500 for an SUV. Since then, Whowell got a bid from Terry’s Ford through the state’s Fleet Government purchasing program.

If elected, will you accept county paid health insurance and mileage reimbursements?

My health insurance is currently through my wife’s employer so I will not accept the county health insurance. I will not ask for mileage reimbursement to attend County Board meetings, activities and duties within Kendall County. If County Board activities/duties require me to travel outside of Kendall County, I will ask for reimbursement only for those items.

In my years of serving on the County Board, I have not taken health insurance as a Board member.

I do accept mileage reimbursement for the few out of county meetings I attend.

What, in your view, are the two major issues now confronting the board? Please explain.

1) The budget. The County’s revenues are inching up at approximately 1% per year, yet the expenses continue to climb at a greater clip. A large part of that is due to the State of Illinois’ dire budget, and also due to the many individuals being forced to leave the County as a result of high real estate taxes and for better opportunities. Accordingly, difficult decisions regarding priorities must be made. 2) Keeping pace with infrastructure and staffing needs with tough budget demands, including the many unfunded mandates from the State.

Is there fat in the county budget? Please identify expenditures you would seek to cut.

There’s always fat in a budget. My biggest concern regarding unneeded/unnecessary line items goes back to priorities. I have studied the entire budget and there are numerous line items that concern me. Actually, the entire budgeting process is a convoluted mess if you want to know the truth. I can’t wait to get in there and dig around and put things right. Excess doesn’t always come in the form of cutting a single “line item” either. We need to look at purchasing efficiencies and means testing for example. I also think the bidding threshold limits should be lowered as well. Competition will bring lower prices for the taxpayers.

All board members, elected officials, and department heads have a great sense of pride in their areas of expertise, and all have areas of the budget which they feel need some trimming. Within any governmental organization, there needs to be a majority vote to pass a budget. Tough decisions were made for the FY2016 County budget, and tough decisions will be necessary for FY2017. Many of the challenges facing the County are related to State and Federal mandates, unfortunately, which are beyond local control.

Should the county continue to maintain and operate the Ellis House and Equestrian Center? Please explain.

The short answer is no. Our County government should not compete with private enterprise, which is exactly what it does at Ellis House and Equestrian Center. Taxpayers are being forced to subsidize other peoples’ hobbies at the Equestrian Center, including people who live outside of Kendall County. The Ellis House wedding operations directly compete with tax paying businesses.

In 2016, Kendall County taxpayers are subsidizing at least 16 weddings through salaries, insurance, maintenance, advertising, pensions and more. Just think of the income that could have produced if those weddings were held at private businesses in Kendall County employing Kendall County citizens! Don’t get me wrong on forest preserves, I love the outdoors and the properties we have.

We just need to treat them as what they are: places where people can enjoy the outdoors. Forest preserves are not business centers.

The Ellis House & Equestrian Center is definitely a challenging proposition. My preference is to look at the overall budget of the Forest Preserve and make needed adjustments based on the total budget. The Forest Preserve District hired a new director just under two years ago, and he has made some tremendous strides in improving the District’s financial position. So long as we can continue to maintain and improve the overall budget, we can provide different programs to the residents.

Budgeting is number 1, as it always is and always should be. An unbalanced budget is simply unacceptable. We can’t have unbalanced budgets in our homes and businesses and government should be no different. I refuse to balance the budget by raising taxes. Number 2, we must set forth legitimate priorities. The County Government is charged by law with certain duties and that’s what it should do; no more, no less. We need to take care of those who can’t take care of themselves or who need help during tough times through agencies like CASA and the Veterans Assistance Commission. We need great infrastructure and roads so businesses can thrive. We need easy, FAIR and consistent permitting without favoritism. And, our Sheriff’s office is important for public safety and confidence. They do a great job now, and it needs to stay that way. If people aren’t safe or don’t feel safe, Kendall County will suffer in numerous ways.

Small sacrifice to help PADS

Sandwich Fair Raffle thanks following businesses for allowing

Every weekend, many people sit in their comfy recliners and watch football for hours at a time. For an equal amount of time, or perhaps less, once a month, people have the chance to help provide shelter to people who have no home in Kendall County.

This Sunday begins the seventh season of the Kendall County PADS homeless shelter program. The program provides warm overnight shelter in locations throughout the county, along with supper, a light breakfast the next morning, and a boxed lunch to take when they leave.

We think it’s a wonderful, needed program, but the organizers say they need more volunteers. They have 500 dedicated volunteers but they need about 100 more so they don’t have to close a shelter on occasion during the season, something they say they’ve never had to do in their past six seasons.

A volunteer for the program typically works one four and a half hour shift per month for six months during the PADS season. They also need volunteers for feeding the guests.

It can be difficult to wrap one’s head around the fact that homelessness is an issue in a county that is seen as prosperous.

But the facts show there are people with basic needs like shelter and food right here at home.

PADS organizers point out that Kendall County has the fourth highest home foreclosure rate in the state, and 1,528 county residents applied for low income energy assistance, or LIHEAP, in 2015, which was a 30 percent increase over 2013. Additionally, 13 percent of adults in the county have no health insurance, organizers say. Statistics like that equate to human beings who are left without a roof over their heads, particularly during the brutal winter months.

Over the program’s six seasons, PADS has served 346 individuals, including men, women and children, and nearly 7,000 times their shelters were used by someone in need. The program has served 20,972 meals.

Only a small percentage of people choose the next alternate, cremation. However, as burial space becomes less available and more expensive, and as religious restrictions against cremation are eased, this means of disposition will probably grow significantly in coming years.

As an alternative to earth burial, cremation often follows a conventional funeral. One of the obvious advantages of cremation is cost. The expenses of a typical cemetery plot, a vault, opening and closing the grave, and a marker or monument are eliminated. Remains may be buried, scattered on land or sea, stored, or placed in an urn in a cemetery columbarium, or delivered to survivors.

Blowing the steam engine’s whistle while it was on the highway was strictly prohibited.

With the invention of reliable internal combustion engines, more and more enthusiasts bought or built automobiles. In 1903, for instance, Oswego jeweler A.P. Werve built that village’s first automobile.

That same year, the General Assembly passed the first state law regulating motor vehicle speed. The law went into effect July 1, 1903, and set a statewide 15 mph speed limit for all motor vehicles, although municipalities were allowed to set their own limits on streets within their limits. In addition to setting a state speed limit, the law also mandated drivers had to stop their vehicles immediately upon frightening a horse or other animal.

Four years later, in 1907, the General Assembly passed legislation requiring motor vehicle registration and the display of license plates. Vehicles were also required to have lights, horns, and brakes (always handy things to have). The law also set speed limits.

Explained a June 7, 1907 Kendall County Record article: “The law regulates the speed to six miles while going around corners, ten miles on business streets and 15 miles an hour in the resident district. In the country 20 miles an hour is permitted.”

In 1909, the law addressed motorcycles for the first time, requiring “that no person shall drive a motor vehicle or motor bicycle...at a speed greater than is reasonable and proper hav-

A speed limit sign in Oswego in about 1942. ing regard to the traffic...or so as to endanger the life or limb or injure the property of any person.” The statewide maximum speed limit was raised to 25 mph in 1911.

Then in 1914, speed limit enforcement finally came to the Kendall County Seat in Yorkville. According to a July 1, 1914, warning in the Record: “Notice is hereby given that the state law with regard to the speed of automobiles will be enforced in Yorkville.

The law places the following limits on speed in town: “In closely built-up business portions, 10 miles an hour.

“In residence districts, 15 miles per hour.

“Outside business and residence portion, 20 miles per hour.

“When going around any curve or corner, 6 miles per hour.

“The penalties are heavy fines; auto drivers are requested to take note of these restrictions.”

More revisions to the law passed in 1919 differentiated between autos, trucks, and buses. Auto speed limits maxed out at 30 mph, while the maximum for trucks and buses ranged

from 12-15 mph depending on weight and type of tires (hard rubber or pneumatic).

Thereafter, limits continued to climb. In 1923, the maximum speed for autos was set at 35 mph, and 25 mph for trucks and buses weighing 15,000 pounds or less. In fact, the law prohibited owning a truck or bus capable of exceeding the maximum speed limit.

The 1931 revisions required all trucks and buses to maintain at least 500-foot intervals on the road.

Then in 1935, the General Assembly did an entire re-write of the vehicle law. Auto speed limits were essentially eliminated for rural highways, but were set for municipal areas. The Illinois Department of Public Works and Buildings was empowered to alter speed limits on highways depending on engineering and traffic. Truck speeds continued to be set based on vehicle gross weight.

Various revisions followed at regular intervals, and in 1951, the maximum highway speed for autos was set at 60 mph.

Then in 1957, a completely new and comprehensive statewide speed limit was established. State-established speeds ranged from 15 mph in alleys to 65 mph for autos on highways. Those limits pretty much stayed the same until 1974 when the federal “Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act” set the national 55 mph limit. In April of 1987, when Congress allowed speed limits on certain interstates to rise to 65 mph, the days of the universal 55 mph limit were numbered.

What’s all this mean? Not much, but it does offer some perspective: And while the 55 mph limit may not have been the greatest thing, at least we weren’t required to have somebody walk in front of us to control frightened animals.

It’s been decades since Congress decreed an energy-saving 55 mph national speed limit. Since the end of the energy crisis of the 1970s, speed limits have gradually edged up, and are now higher in some areas than they were before the “Double Nickel” limit was imposed.

The lower limit was imposed to save energy during what was thought to be a time of declining oil production. Turned out energy companies encouraged talk of a shortage in order to hike prices, and panicky drivers contributed to it by hoarding gas. The lower speed limits did save some gas, and had the added advantage of reducing highway deaths.

For some, regulating highway speed is a liberal plot to prevent freedom-loving vehicle owners everywhere from traveling as God intended – at top speed. After the energy “crisis” ended, Congress eliminated the national speed limit, allowing states to set their own limits. These days, Interstate speeds of 70 or even 75 mph are not unusual.

Despite what some may believe, laws limiting speed are not creatures of modern times. Here in Illinois, speed limits and traffic regulations date to horse and buggy days.

Before 1903, regulating the speed of motor vehicles was not a state function. Local laws, however, prohibited racing horses and horse-drawn vehicles on public roadways. In addition, it was illegal to drive a horse across a bridge at a gait faster than a walk, and warning signs appeared on all major local bridges.

Regulation of motor vehicles began when farmers started using steam-powered tractors to power threshing machines. In 1885, in response to problems the new machines were creating, laws required steam tractors on a public roadways to stop when they approached within 100 yards of any person with a horse or other animal on a highway. The training objectives and logistics of the program were all structured

with input from municipal leaders.

Some program requirements requested by municipalities include: • Training should be a maximum of four hours in length, held once a week from 8 a.m. to noon • A variety of topics should be covered • Material must be relevant and immediately applicable • Training must contain a group activity and peer interaction • Training must incorporate networking opportunities, benchmarking of ideas and the sharing of best practices The curriculum in the Communities of Excellence program is as diverse as its participants. Topics include leadership, communication, government operations, working with generations, budgeting, time management and others. To date, participants represent fourteen municipal departments that include administration, city clerk, customer service, fire, finance, human resources, parks and public works.

Communities of Excellence is proving to serve as a catalyst for municipal collaboration. The training environment is open, creative and energetic.

Group activities encourage the sharing of best practices and networking.

During a six-week series, participants find they have few differences and much in common with their peers.

Frequently, success stories are shared about how a previously discussed training topic was applied that improved employee communication, streamlined a process, saved money or reduced stress in a department.

Since 2014, more than 90 public sector employees have participated in one or more of the Spring or Fall Series. Twenty-two of those 90 participants have been recognized for attending all available 96 hours of professional development. Certainly, local municipalities are devoted to creating communities of excellence.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A 23-year-old Plano woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in was struck from behind by another vehicle near the intersection of Route 47 and Corneils Road in Yorkville.

Yorkville police say Ashley Lopez of the 400 block of Abe Street was pronounced dead after being transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Police say Lopez was a passenger in

a 2008 Nissan Altima stopped in traffic in the northbound lane of Route 47 when a 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Kyle Delhaye, 20, of South Elgin “struck the rear bumper” of the Altima “causing both vehicles to exit the roadway.”

Police say Delhaye was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Selma Martinez, 56, of Plano, the driver of the Altima, and Angela Lopez, 22, also of Plano, another passenger in the Altima, were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment of their injuries.

Homeless shelter program needs volunteers

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Organizers of the Kendall County PADS homeless shelter program say they are in great need for volunteers for the upcoming season, which starts this Sunday, Oct. 16.

The PADS program, which stands for Public Action to Deliver Shelter, generally runs fall through spring, with the last night of this season being April 14. It uses local churches in the area that provide shelter for the homeless on a different night each week.

Anne Engelhardt of Yorkville, who serves as the organization’s executive director, said PADS typically needs 600 volunteers each season to run the program, and they are 100 short of that goal.

“We’re a little concerned,” she said.

People retire or have done it for a few years and take a break, she said.

“There are things that happen in people’s lives, which is why we need to have some fresh volunteers,” she said.

Volunteers serve in three shifts in a typical evening – first shift from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., second shift from

10:45 p.m. to 3 a.m., and the third shift from 2:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Each shift has a set of duties – for example, first shift sets out mattresses and registers guests as they arrive, second shift prepares boxed lunches for the next day and oversees the guests, third shift cleans up the PADS site and checks out guests.

The program ideally needs four people per shift, two men and two women, for each night, Engelhardt said.

“If we don’t have at least two volunteers in the middle of the night, we can’t open,” she said. “If absolutely necessary, we can go down to two, but we would prefer not to, because we’ve increased our capacity to 20 [guests].

So we want to keep a good ratio between volunteers and guests.”

Engelhardt acknowledged that the second and third shifts are the hardest to fill, but said it’s only a once-a-month shift six times a year.

“It’s hard when people are working, but we remind people that it is just once a month for six times,” she said.

“And if there are enough people you might have a month off every once in a while.”

PLANO LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Kendall County PADS has served 346 individuals over its first six seasons – men, women and children. The shelters have provided 6,957 overnight stays and the food team has served 20,972 meals, according to Engelhardt.

Engelhardt said the organization also helps connect its guests with social service agencies and other organizations that can help them.

“We link really well with our other local agencies – the Food Pantry, the Health Department, the Sheriff’s Of-

fice and all the local law enforcement agencies,” she said. “There is always a representative on our board from all three of those, and we work real closely with them. We’re just laypeople, we can’t solve their problems, but we can connect them or direct them to the social service agencies that are available that can help them.”

The Plano Rotary Club hosted Plano High School (PHS) Students of the Month, seniors Matthew Davis and Jamie Heller, at the club’s weekly lunch meeting Oct. 4. This was the first monthly Student of the Month meeting. Davis and Heller participated in the regular monthly meeting and enjoyed lunch with the members on the invitation of Eric Benson, principal of PHS. Davis is the son of Tammi and Tommy Davis of Plano. He told the Rotarians that he is a very active student, currently carrying seven weighted classes. He is a four-year member of the PHS Marching Band, playing trombone and tuba. Davis currently has earned nine college credits while in high school, and he earned a 30 on his ACT. He hopes to attend the University of Chicago after graduation to major in clinical psychiatry. He told the Rotarians that an advanced placement class in psychology captured his interest to pursue his career goals.

Heller is the daughter of Sheri and Paul Heller of Plano. She is currently in four weighted classes and is the vice president of the National Honor Society and president of the Theatre

Club. Heller is also a member of Educators Rising Club at PHS. So far, she has earned nine college credits while a student at PHS. She is considering Knox College or North Central College and plans to pursue a double major in secondary education English and psychology. Heller said that she hopes to become a school counselor.

The Student of the Month program is in addition to the newly formed Rotary Interact Club at PHS. The Student of the Month is chosen by PHS administration to represent the student body at a designated regular weekly meeting.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.

Plano Rotary Club meets weekly at noon. Meetings include lunch and information, guest speakers, and reports on club projects, including Interact Club at Plano High School, Sherman R Cook Memorial Scout Park, and scholarship projects to support local youth. Area man facing charges in Boulder Hill burglary An Aurora man has been charged with burglary and a variety of other charges connected to a motor vehicle burglary and criminal damage to property last month in Boulder Hill.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Kenneth Loyd, 20, of Aurora on Sept. 28 with burglary, a class 2 felony, criminal damage to property, a class A misdemeanor, and criminal trespass to vehicle, a class A misdemeanor.

Loyd’s bond was set at $50,000 with 10 percent to apply. Loyd is currently in custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections on unrelated charges, police said.

Kendall County Sheriff’s deputies

took a report Sept. 3 for a motor vehicle burglary and criminal damage to property in the 0-30 block of South Bereman Road in Boulder Hill.

“The victim reported hearing glass break and seeing an unknown male standing in their driveway,” Sheriff’s police said in a press release.

“The unknown male left the area and the victim Kenneth discovered a window of Loyd their vehicle was broken. Patrol evidence technicians were able to recover physical evidence from the scene which aided in the investigation.”

Sheriff’s Office deputies continued the investigation, which led to the charges, police said.

“The course is very long and the greens were very fast. It takes awhile to get accustomed to that, especially when you’re 15 years old,” McGinnis said. “I thought May did very, very well for a sophomore. There’s not a lot of sophomores at this competition, and she’s 2-for-2. She went last year, and she went this year; she’s the only athlete right now at Plano High School who has done that, so kudos to her. It just gives her that much more experience and confidence for the next two years. All in all, I was very proud of May.” The Plano girls’ golf team ended the 2016 season with a 20-3 record and an Interstate Eight Conference championship, and graduates Martinez as the lone senior on the roster.

“That might be our best record to date, so they set a school record and we won conference and had people on All-Conference,” McGinnis said. “You walk away with your head held high knowing you did the best you could.

They had an incredible year. I’m already thinking about next year and we should be able to make it out. We have the capability.”

On almost any other course in Illinois, Plano’s team score would have secured a team advancement into a Class 1A sectional.

But not at Boone Creek Golf Course.

The Class 1A Johnsburg Regional proved to be an elite field of talent on Oct. 5 and Plano’s round of 420 was the fourth best team score – leaving the Reapers one place from qualifying for the second straight year.

“This regional was very difficult and if you look at the other regionals, you will see this was difficult based on the other regional scores,” Plano coach Tammy McGinnis said. “I think this team is deserving of going to state because they really have the scores that can compete. It’s just the luck of the draw where we’re placed.”

Woodstock-based Marian won the regional with a 346, while Richmond-Burton (378) and Johnsburg (398) rounded out the top three.

At the other three regionals under the Pontiac Sectional, no team scored under a 400, and sectional-qualifying scores included a 456 at the Grant Park Regional, a 473 at the Pontiac Regional and a 454 at the Chicago University Regional.

Richmond-Burton and Wisconsin commit Mackenzie Hahn won the regional with a medalist round of 66.

The top 10 individuals not members of sectional-bound teams all shot a 99 or better to reach the Pontiac Sectional on Monday, including Plano’s May Long.

The junior shot a 49-50-99 to advance.

Other scores from Plano came from Lexi Clark (100), Ashley Martinez (104), Shannen Paxton (117), Aubrey Flodstrom (128) and Alejandra Alapizco (139).

Plano soccer to open regionals PLANO RECORD The Plano soccer team (10-8-1), seeded 10th, will open the Class 2A postseason on Friday, hosting No. 10 Sandwich (2-17) at 4:30 p.m. in the play-in game of the Kaneland Regional. The winner will advance to play No. 1 Benet Academy on Oct. 18 at Kaneland High School in the regional semifinal game.

On Oct. 4, Plano lost a 4-0 game to Streator on Senior Night. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead by halftime and added one more goal in the second half. Trevor Scott made 15 saves in 80 minutes in goal. Plano ended the regular season at Peotone on Oct. 6 and lost 4-0 after giving up a pair of goals in the first half and two more in the second half. Scott had six saves.

Plano Varsity: The Reapers (5-20) received the No. 10 seed in the Freeport Sectional and will open the postseason on Oct. 25 against No. 8 Princeton in the opening round of the LaSalle-Peru Regional.

For the second straight week, the Plano defense has held its opponent to 10 points or less.

“One thing that gets lost in the statistics is we’re a team that’s not going to leave our starters out there after we have a lead,” Kunz said. “There were a couple games that teams have scored on us late in the game, but our defense has been really sound all year. Our defensive coordinator, Matt Kee, has done a phenomenal job of making the adjustments in games.”

Plano now prepares for a trip to Reed-Custer (3-4). The Comets come off a 33-7 loss to Wilmington on Friday night and risk playoff elimination with a loss to Plano this week.

“Reed-Custer is going to be a tough opponent because they’re 3-4 and have to win the next two to be eligible.

They’re going to be dangerous,” Kunz said. “We have to come out and be hungry. There are things we’re working on to improve going into the first week of the playoffs. We have things we need to fix. We’re hoping to get our special teams going more. When you run out of things to improve, the kids get bored and you peak. We’re hoping to keep improving and keep moving forward.”

Reaper Family, If there is one thing that can be said about this football season, it sure has gone fast. Already seven weeks are in the books, and with two regular season games to go, we are continuing with our focus of getting better each week.

I’ve been really happy with the consistent effort and focus of our players and coaching staff all season, but especially proud of the efforts we have made in recent weeks.

This isn’t specific to football, but whenever people have been around each other for a long period of time, there can come a point where they start to get tired of each other. This happens in the workplace, in families, and seemingly anywhere there are human beings. Sunday marked the 6th anniversary for my wife Melanie and I, and in that time, we have been fortunate to not grow tired of each other. During football season, it gets hectic, and during that time we seem to not see each other enough, but we find a way through it.

Last week Tuesday, I felt like our players reached that breaking point in the season. People who could usually joke around with each other got irritated, the competition in practice got a little chippy, and coaches were a little quicker to get on someone when we didn’t feel like we were getting their all.

Practice felt flat, and it was obvious this feeling was the source.

At the end of practice we talked about it as a team, we acknowledged we are all human and we needed to recognize it and overcome it. The first thing we did was our after practice “shout outs.” These “shout outs” are focused on teammates complimenting teammates, and being aware of the people around you rather than just focusing on one’s self. The rest of the week we had some great practices, as we kept each other upbeat and focused on the task at hand. This is one of the great things about football, as there is always an opportunity to teach a life lesson such as this.

This Friday we will head down to Reed-Custer to face a very tough ball club who needs to win the next two games to get a playoff spot. We are still taking one game at a time, and hoping to clinch a playoff berth this Friday. If you can make it down to support us, we would greatly appreciate it! Streator showed some early fight against visiting Plano on Friday night, tying the game in the first quarter, but the Reapers quickly turned the tables on the Bulldogs.

Plano (5-2) exploded with 28 points in the second quarter to secure control of the scoreboard en route to a 51-10 victory.

“We watched film on them and expected certain things. When we see what we actually get, we make some adjustments and that’s when we start playing really well,” Plano coach Brad Kunz said. “The guys just get rolling, and when we catch the momentum we seem to really do well with it.”

The Reapers finished with 241 yards rushing – evenly divided between Michael Marshall (5 carries, 70 yards), Jay Winter (10 carries, 79 yards) and Tyler Ward (four carries, 70 yards). Ward was 9 of 11 passing for 200 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Ward found Israel Adeoti for a 28yard touchdown pass to put Plano on the scoreboard with 10:45 on the clock in the first quarter, and Emmanuel Valles kicked a 38-yard field goal to put the Reapers ahead, 10-7, with 1:21 left in the opening period.

Early in the second quarter, Ward scored on an 18-yard run before Plano put up three more scores in the final four minutes of the half. Winter put in the next score from the 13 yard line and two minutes later, punched it in from the 2 to give the Reapers a 31-7 lead.

With 1:14 to go, Ward hit Winter for an 18-yard touchdown pass, and Valles was good for another extra point kick to create a 38-7 halftime lead.

“The biggest contributor to that is the way our defense has been playing.

The reason we were able to score 28 points in a short time,” Kunz said.

“Our defense gave us a short field.

They made some stops and we got some fumble recoveries. It was 31-7 and we were talking about them getting a first down and take a knee into the half, but our defense created a turnover and we had the ball on the 30. It’s just been amazing to have the athletes that we have and the different weapons we have, and the ability to pick and choose how we want to attack them.”

Plano runners have strong finishes at 7th annual Ross Greiter Invite

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com With a first-year coach and a revised course, the Plano cross country team showcased their speed in front of a home crowd at the 7th annual Ross Greiter Invite at Plano High School on Oct. 4.

Ross Greiter, a former Reaper athlete and member of the cross country team, passed away in 2009 at the age of 19. On Oct. 4, eight teams came together at the starting line in memory of Ross, and Plano secured strong finishes in both races.

“I just wanted to do good because I knew Ross’ family was here and I wanted to make a good impression,” said Plano sophomore Jorge Aguilar, who led the Reapers with a 13th-place finish.

“I pushed as hard as I could.”

“It’s really cool to see the schools come out and how much family for the runners came out; it’s good to see support at the race,” Plano coach Alanna Harju said.

In the varsity girls’ race, Morris turned in the top team score with a 39, followed by Seneca (50) and Westmont (51). Plano scored 160 points to take sixth overall. Sandwich’s Kayla Schiera won the race with a time of 18:36.

For Plano, sophomore Rachelle Gomez clocked in at 22:24 to place 24th overall, and freshman teammate Linnea Collins finished in 23:16 to follow Gomez into the finish line. Senior Demetra Phylactos (24:39), sophomore Yali Chavez (26:09), freshman Brooke Morgan (27:49) and freshman Marina Mercado (28:49) and senior Sarah Roberts (28:56).

“It was nice to run here; my mom came today,” Gomez said. “We didn’t have summer practice, but coach has been coaching us pretty hard. [Linnea] pushes me a lot too.”

Westmont scored 30 points to win the boys’ race, with Seneca (53) and Morris (63) finishing in the top three. Plano had four finishers and did not score in the team standings. Seneca’s Christopher Collet won the race in 16:20.

Jorge Aguilar crossed the finish line in 18:09 to place 13th overall. Sophomore Brandon Littlefair wasn’t far behind with a time of 18:22 to take 17th and senior Jovany Burciaga (20:26) and freshman Juan Aguilar (21:52) also raced for the Reapers.

On Monday, Plano entered the Amboy Columbus Day Invite, and Littlefair had a breakout race, clocking in at 16:58 to place 45th overall in the field of 172 runners. Jorge Aguilar (18:20), senior Ryan Jernigan (19:04), Burciaga (19:21) and Juan Aguilar (21:34) also finished as Plano took 17th overall.

In the girls’ race, Gomez clocked in at 21:26 to place 61st overall to lead Plano. Collins (22:32), Phylactos (23:05), Chavez (24:19), Morgan (26:11), Roberts (27:46) and Mercado (28:21) also finished. Plano was 23rd overall.

Now, Plano will return to Lisle Community Park for the annual Interstate Eight/Independent Invite on Saturday

before the Class 1A Peru St. Bede Regional arrives on Oct. 22.

“We’re starting to get ready and tapering. We want our peak in conference, but we want another peak later,” Harju said. “We’re watching our mileage and focusing on technique. It’s a growing program, and I’m excited.

They’re starting to understand why I push them the way I do. I’m really excited to keep watching them grow into a family.”
