Meeting addresses heroin crisis PLANO RECORD Kendall County Board Chairman John Shaw, Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird and Commander Mike Peters attended a meeting on combating heroin in Illinois with other government officials from the 14th Congressional District of Illinois on Aug. 30.

The meeting was led by 14th District Congressman Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, and officials participated in a discussion which featured updates on the heroin problem and the progress being made to combat the problem. There

was an update on the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA), which was signed into law by President Barack Obama on July 22.

CARA authorizes the Attorney General and Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to address the prescription opioid abuse and heroin use crisis.

CARA has a section dedicated to law enforcement and treatment which provides grants for law enforcement officers to be trained to help combat the problems of opioid abuse and heroin use.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies

are aware of the heroin crisis and have been trained to identify situations involving opioid overdoses.

The patrol deputies carry and are trained to administer intranasal naloxone, commonly known as Narcan.

Narcan is administered to help reverse the effects of opioids such as heroin, methadone and oxycodone.

“On occasions, deputies have saved lives by administering Narcan. The passage of CARA will hopefully allow deputies to continue to have the most up-to-date training and life-saving techniques available to help combat opioid abuse and heroin use,” said Baird.

Plano OKs parking lot project bid

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com D Construction of Coal City was awarded a contract by Plano City Council members for the Hugh Street parking lot construction. Their bid of $95,016 was the lowest of four firms with the others ranging from $115,115 to $128,000.

John McGinnis, city engineer and public works director, said the city is short about $8,000 for the project. But he said the bid is a good one because it is so much lower than the other three.

He said the city could postpone the project until next year when they would have more money.

“Whether you go with this or rebid it in the spring is entirely up to the council,” he said.

“I think we should do it now. It could cost even more next spring,” Alderman Melody Herreid said. “I just think the longer we wait the less likely it’s going to get done. There’s got to be something somewhere in the budget.”

Other council members agreed with her.

One person asked if there was a contingency fund that could be used for this project.

City Treasurer Janet Goehst said this fund could not be used, but said they could take the money out of the emergency fund.

When an alderman asked how long it would take to complete the work, McGinnis said he would assume the work would be done this year if the D Construction bid was accepted at this time.

The low bid was accepted by unanimous council vote.

Kendall County Judge Timothy J. McCann addresses the County Board at its Committee of the Whole meeting Sept. 15, as representatives of Dewberry, the county’s project management firm on the courthouse and jail security update, look on.

During the committee meeting, board member John Purcell, chairman of the board’s finance committee, said he was concerned about having money in the capital fund for a future courthouse expansion or build-out of the second floor at the courthouse.

“The issue for me is, when are we going to need to put $5 million, $6 million, $7 million into a courthouse expansion – that’s my real concern,” he said.

Judge Timothy McCann told the committee he doesn’t foresee the immediate need for such a project. He said six to 10 years ago, it was a different story.

“We thought by now we would be upstairs in the second floor, we’d probably have two more courtrooms functioning and so on,” McCann said. “The economy decided to throw a turn, so we’ve decided we don’t need to do that at this point. It is my expectation that we are at least three to five years away from even talking about anything like that. It will take another economic upswing, when you see housing starts and population jumping up again.”

He continued, “Undoubtedly at some point in time, Kendall County will be positioned to have more judges and a larger facility for us, but in the meantime, it’s not even in our long-

The Kendall County Board approved a $3 million upgrade to security systems at the Kendall County Courthouse and the Public Safety Center, both in Yorkville, in a unanimous vote Tuesday.

The board agreed to award a contract to Security Automation Systems of Indianapolis for $3,006,655, one of four companies that bid on the project.

According to Sheriff Dwight Baird, the total bid includes a base bid, a 10 percent contingency, and two alternate additions: a four-inch conduit connection between the Public Safety Center and the courthouse, and an additional fiber optic cable to go into the four-inch conduit to provide a redundant path between the two facilities, according to Baird.

Baird said the original estimated cost of the project was $3.85 million.

Upgrades to the county’s video visitation and video bond call programs will be bid on at a future date, he said.

During a presentation to the County Board this summer, representatives from Dewberry, the project management firm for the upgrade, said they will update the analog camera system, intercommunications system, access control system and PLC-based security control system. Crews will also update cabling in the courthouse and Public Safety Center. They will also add a redundant fiber communication connection between the two buildings.

McCann said he guessed it would cost $4 million to $5 million to add two courtrooms upstairs, or $1 million to $1.25 million for a courtroom to be added to the courthouse’s west side that “might buy you five years.”

“When we get to that point, you’re gonna want to get updated numbers and decide whether actually building expansion is more appropriate than going upstairs, but I can’t predict that,” he said.

McCann also commented on the planned updated video visitation and video bond call systems, which are estimated to cost $265,000.

“The systems we are looking at will do more than just provide for visitation and bond call,” he said. “It will provide for remote access, for not only the lawyers, public defenders, probation staff, state’s attorney. We will expand our use of video for court, so we will transport less people to court on a daily basis. This system will, in all likelihood, probably have the ability for residents of the jail to visit with families remotely, similar to a Skype type of situation, which means less people coming into the sheriff’s office.”

Reporters should question Trump

To the Editor: It seems every reporter who talks to Hillary Clinton begins the conversation about her emails. But to make things fair they should begin every conversation with Donald Trump with these three questions.

First tell us about your involvement with Trump University and how you will add address any indictments stemming from it.

Second, tell us how you have changed as a landlord from your earlier days when the Justice Dept. filed discrimination charges against you and your father for barring black applicants from renting any Trump properties.

Lastly, tell us how filing so many bankruptcies that resulted in many small mom and pop businesses closing down because they didn’t get paid, gives you insight into creating jobs, whereby the bankruptcies seem to cost jobs.

It appears that people feel past behavior predicts future behavior; it’s only right that we peel apart Mr. Trump’s background to see who he really is.

​Chances are most of the people who have cause to visit the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville really don’t want to be there. Courthouses can be grim places as people consult with their attorneys and await their cases to be called.

But as our news editor, Tony Scott, reported last week, the atmosphere inside the courthouse should be a little less imposing beginning next month when members of the Kendall Arts Guild and the county judiciary unveil a newly painted mural above the building’s security checkpoint in the main lobby.

Using donations along with the active support of Presiding Judge Timothy McCann, the KAG commissioned a professional artist, Eulojio “Joe” Ortega of Sandwich, to paint a mural featuring Kendall County themes. Without going into the spe-

Fact-checking claims about Clinton org

T​ o the Editor: Mr. Harry Henderson, in a recent letter in the Forum (Sept. 7), made some serious allegations condemning the Clinton Foundation. That Mr. Henderson, at 90 years of age, remains so engaged with the world around him and is concerned about the direction we as a country are taking is commendable.

I wonder, however, about the sources of his information. They seem to have come from the Trump campaign for the presidency. When I read his letter online at KendallCountyNow.com, it was interrupted, amusingly, by a short video from CNN titled “CharityWatch Gives Clinton Foundation an ‘A’ Rating.”

Examples of public art are rare in Kendall County and we’re pleased that the KAG and McCann saw an opportunity to enhance the courthouse with the mural. It is our hope the mural, like other successful public art, will provide a moment of contemplation and reflection to all those who walk into the courthouse. Even better, may it give a sense to all who view it that they are in unique place with a rich history: Kendall County.

Groups of paleo-Indians arrived in Northern Illinois some 10,000 years ago, and probably maintained their culture for several thousand years. They were gradually replaced by Native People of the Archaic culture. This cultural tradition appeared around 8,000 B.C., and lasted for about 7,000 years.

Indians of the Eastern Archaic culture were different from their paleo predecessors in that they were hunter-gatherers who placed more emphasis on gathering as opposed to being primarily big game hunters. While hunting was still important to their survival, Archaic people also began to depend on gathering other foodstuffs, such as nuts, berries and wild grains.

The Woodland Tradition, a successor to the Archaic culture, began about 2,500 B.C. Traces of Indians of the Late Woodland Tradition, which began about 700 or 800 A.D., were found at the Jensen Site.

According to Moreau S. Maxwell of Michigan State University, the small villages and campsites of the Late Woodland period are “located along the banks of minor rivers” from southern Illinois to as far north as Jo Davies County on the Wisconsin border. Readers of Mr. Henderson’s opinions should be wary and do some fact-checking of their own on some of his other claims. The truth matters.

The Illinois Archaeological Survey celebrates Archaeological Awareness Month each September all across the state.

I suspect most people, hearing the word “archaeology,” tend to think of Indiana Jones searching for the Ark of the Covenant with much swash and buckle or Howard Carter seeing “wonderful things” as his flashlight pierced the gloom into King Tut’s tomb for the first time in a couple thousand years.

But archaeology, which happens right here in Illinois on a regular basis, is also vital to improving our understanding of the state’s past. Archaeologists have investigated the ancient people who hunted Ice Age mammals and lived in the Modoc Rock Shelter down in Randolph County, uncovered the extent of the huge city built by Native People surrounding soaring Monk’s Mound at Cahokia, and used scientific techniques to analyze and then interpret the lives of the state’s earliest European settlers at Starved Rock, Mort Massac, and New Salem.

Archaeology has even helped tell the story of Kendall County’s long history, with digs centered around both historic and prehistoric sites. Excavations at one of those sites, the Jensen Site in Oswego back in the summer and fall of 1987, documented the occupation of the area along Waubonsie Creek by Native People for more than 1,000 years. Some of the results of that dig are now on exhibit at Oswego’s Little White School Museum.

Archaeology can often answer the questions of what and how, but it’s not so good at determining why. We will never know, for instance, what those ancient people who lived on the bluff overlooking the creek thought or felt, although I suppose we could surmise that their feelings came and went much like our own do. We don’t know what they looked like, since no burials were found at the Jensen Site. But the excavations did end up telling us a good deal about how they lived, what they ate, and how they managed to survive.

No evidence of the oldest inhabitants of Kendall County, the paleo hunters, were found at the Jensen Site. However, their characteristic flint and chert spear points, beautiful in their symmetry and finely made, have been found in locations throughout our county. These earliest residents of the Fox Valley lived and died by hunting, following herds of game that occupied the vast grasslands created by the

bone tools and weapons, mounds constructed in the shape of animals, and food preparation tools such as grinding stones are characteristic of this cultural tradition.

Late Woodland people were forced to deal with a culture in decline. In the early part of the period, the economy appeared to have been based solely on hunting, in contrast with the elaborate Middle Woodland cultures such as the Hopewell.

“The impression,” Maxwell writes, “is that the Late Woodland people living on the inland creeks and rivers were dabbling in corn planting, but, for the most part were hunters.”

In the 14 cooking pits excavated at the Jensen Site, a small assemblage of bones was recovered, chiefly those of Whitetail deer, muskrat and beaver.

In addition, broken bits of pottery were excavated that also seemed to indicate the Late Woodland period.

An interesting discovery was a large fragment of a bison’s leg bone in one of the cooking pits. It was sent off to Dr. Michael Finnegan at Kansas State University, who dated it to between 1100 and 1400 A.D. Those Late Woodland people who lived along Waubonsie Creek on the Jensen Site picked a near-ideal location. The site is close to the creek and the river, and all the food there. Fresh water mussel shells, presumably from either the river or creek, have been found in a couple of the cooking pits.

In addition, the creek and river bottomlands were rich in natural foods, as they are even today. Dense stands of oaks, walnuts, butternuts and hickories dotted the river and creek valleys, while berries of various kinds were also abundant. Wild carrot, wild onion, and other food plants were also thick throughout the area, as were the grasses from sunflowers, marsh elder and goosefoot to little barley those ancient people began selectively breeding to increase their yield and usefulness.

The spot these early Oswegoans picked for their homes, best described as upland savanna, with grassland punctuated by hardwoods, was also easily defensible and had a pure water source in a spring that dropped down the bluff to the creek.

In short, the Jensen Site was probably as popular a place to live a thousand years ago as it appears (judging by the nice homes in Stone Gate Estates) to be today. Talk to any real estate agent, and they’ll tell you the value of a piece of property depends on three things: location, location, location. It never ceases to amaze me that the more things change, the more they really do stay essentially the same.

School District 88 reports enrollments up 66

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Enrollment figures for the 2016-17 school year in Plano are up 66 over last year, Superintendent Hector Garcia told board members Monday night.

The total enrollment for last year was 2,391, which includes 51 out-of-district students, he said. This year the total was 2,457, which included 57 out-of-district students.

By grades, nine showed increases and five dropped, he said.

The largest increase, 44 students,

was the high school seniors, jumping from 154 to 198, followed by 38 students in the fourth grade, which went from 171 to 209. This increase most likely had an effect on the third-grade enrollment that dropped by 37 students, going from 203 to 166, Garcia’s report showed.

The sixth grade increased by 29 students to 185, and the high school sophomores jumped 13 to a new high of 179.

The pre-kindergarten grade increased 17 to 109 and the ninth grade increased 17 to 179.

He said high school freshmen hit a

new high of 179 with 17 additional students and eighth grade hit a new high of 182, an increase of 13.

The second grade jumped eight to a new high of 179, the fifth grade increased eight students to a new high of 174 and the kindergarten increased by four students for a new high of 165.

Garcia noted that the seventh

grade lost 21 students, dropping its total to 167, and the high school juniors dropped 15 to a total of 168, while the first graders lost 10 students for a new total of 157. The four years of high school students increased by 33 from a total of 674 to a new total of 707.

The report was accepted by the board.

The Plano High School National Hispanic Institute (NHI) Club was able to send three seniors to the Collegiate World Series at the University of Tampa, Florida; 13 juniors to the Lorenzo de Zavala – LDZ Legislative leadership training at Elmhurst College; and two freshmen to the Midwest Great Debate at Augustana College.

All of these students worked hard to raise at least 50 percent of the tuition cost. In some cases, that also meant raising enough funds for airfare. All of this was possible due to the support from family, community, and the school district.

Students raised close to $12,000 last year, including the financial contributions by parents.

This year, NHI Club is working hard to continue recruiting new members and send even more freshmen to the Midwest Great Debate. The club also hopes to graduate more NHI students from the NHI Program, where they will participate in a graduation

ceremony and receive recognition for the completion of the series.

To help raise funds for these endeavors, the NHI Club will be holding a fall donation drive.

24. The donation truck will be parked at the Rural King on Route 34 in Plano this year. Donations will be taken from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Acceptable donations include clothes, books, CDs/DVDs, shoes, bedding, purses, toys, games, knickknacks and electrical items (but no tube TVs). Items should be bagged.

NHI Club of Plano High School will earn money from these donations. In addition, savers donate a percentage of the sale of these items to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago Area.

If the club collects 400 bags at 14 pounds each, it can earn $1,000. The goal is to fill two trucks this year.

Movie theater will reopen

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – The WOW 7 movie theater, 101 Duvick Ave. in Sandwich, will be partially refurbished when it reopens as Cinema 7 on Friday, Sept.

23. That announcement was made by the new owners, Willis, Shirley and Chris Johnson, owners of the Classic Cinema chain.

When Willis and Chris visited Sandwich, they said the WOW 7 theater was the 14th theater in the Classic Cinema

chain. All of the theaters in the chain were older movie theaters they purchased in northern Illinois then restored or refurbished. The Sandwich theater is the second newest; many are much older.

Being worked on first are the projection rooms, lighting in the individual theaters and bathrooms, they reported.

Remodeling and some of the other work mostly will be done in three months, they said, but it will be completely finished by the end of six months.

Residents of the Boulder Hill subdivision and other unincorporated areas in Kendall County will soon be getting another cable provider.

The Kendall County Board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a franchise agreement with cable television and phone service provider MetroNet. County Administrator Jeff Wilkins said the county and MetroNet have had discussions over the past year about a cable franchise agreement with the provider.

The franchise agreement would only apply to service provided to those customers in unincorporated areas of Kendall County, such as Boulder Hill and Shore Heights. However, Wilkins said MetroNet has recently inked pacts with the villages of Oswego and Plainfield, and is in discussions with Montgomery.

John Campbell, vice president and general counsel of MetroNet, said his

firm has “taken a pretty big interest in Kendall County.”

Board member Robert “HD” Davidson asked Wilkins if more public notice was required.

Wilkins said that Comcast was notified of the meeting, as were the Oswego Township supervisor and highway commissioner, and the issue was discussed at the County Board’s Committee of the Whole meeting last Thursday.

Wilkins said Illinois statute does not require special notice, just a traditional public hearing.

Campbell said his company has signed agreements throughout Illinois and he has yet to have heard anyone from the public express concerns.

Campbell said the company will have a construction communications website to inform residents about the progress of the project.

“Folks will be able to go on there, and get information about their particular areas,” he said. “Additionally, they’ll have an opportunity to look at our services and our pricing.”

Local ‘fishing fanatic’ helped inspire others Colleagues, friends remember biologist Bob Rung of IDNR

“When you measure someone’s life you wonder if they truly enjoyed what they did. In Bob’s case he absolutely did what he enjoyed and because of his passion I know he really inspired a lot of people.”

By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com After serving in Vietnam and earning a Purple Heart as a U.S. Army Combat medic, Bob Rung came home to the Boulder Hill subdivision and operated a pet shop for several years in the Wilhelm Building on Jefferson Street in downtown Oswego.

But Rung, who died Monday at the age of 71, stepped away from the shop in the 1980s as he embarked on a new career as an Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist whose work helped improve the ecosystems of the Fox River, Waubonsie Creek and other rivers and streams throughout the state.

John Rung, president of Shaw Media, the parent company of the Plano Record, said growing up Bob was more like a father than a brother to him.

“I’m not sure where I’d be without him,” John Rung said. “Bob loved fishing, and he was passionate about conservation and his profession. But most of all he loved his wife, his children, and his growing family. He was truly a devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

Former Oswego Village President Brian LeClercq recalled that he first got to know Rung as one of the many local youths who would frequent Rung’s pet shop.

“Bob was so much fun. I remember going in his shop when I was a youngster and I knew I couldn’t afford a fish and he knew it, too, but he still gave me a guppy for free – a pregnant guppy. A few days after I brought it home I had tank full of fish,” LeClercq said.

Bob Rung, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist whose work helped improve the ecosystems of the Fox River and Waubonsie Creek, died Monday. reconnected with Rung in his role as a village official. By that time, Rung was working with the IDNR. LeClercq recalled being among a group of volunteers who helped Rung plant lizard tail and water willows at the mouth of the Waubonsie Creek at the Fox River in what is now Hudson Crossing Park in downtown Oswego.

“He was so passionate about the Fox River and he really inspired me and I know he inspired many others,” LeClercq said, adding, “For me he’s one of those individuals that left a mark on my life and got me interested in the environment. He and [the late] Mike Brock [an Oswego High School ecology teacher] were all about the Fox River and inspiring others to try and do their part to clean it up.”

Looking back on Rung’s life as a shop owner and then with the IDNR, LeClercq said, “I think he did what he loved. When you measure someone’s life you wonder if they truly enjoyed what they did. In Bob’s case he absolutely did what he enjoyed and because

of his passion I know he really inspired a lot of people.”

Bert Gray, former longtime director of the Oswegoland Park District, said Rung provided assistance to the park district in his role with the IDNR. As an example, Gray described Rung as being instrumental in providing the park district with information that helped the agency to secure funding in the late 1990s to remove the dam on the Waubonsie Creek in Oswego’s Stonegate Park. The early 20th century dam had served to block fish passage in the creek for decades, which ultimately served to limit the fish population in both the creek and river.

When the dam was removed in the late 1990s, the creek was restored as an active piece of the Fox River ecosystem, Gray said.

“The result today is a much healthier creek and a healthier fish population in the Fox River,” Gray said.

Roger Matile, director of the Little White School Museum and Record columnist, said Rung was a “fishing fanat-

ic” from the time his family moved to Boulder Hill.

Matile added, “Bob’s love of the river, I think, drove him to get the relevant educational credentials so he could join the IDNR and actually make a difference.”

In a statement issued Monday, the IDNR said Rung’s “energy and passion for river conservation were unmatched.” As an example, the statement noted that the water willow is now thriving along the banks of the Fox River thanks to Rung’s “tireless efforts.”

The agency also described Rung as “relentless with permit reviews” and someone who “never backed down from anybody.”

The statement continued: “He was a true fish nut and loved them all. If you knew Bob, you would not be surprised that he also threw himself into angling with equal energy and passion.

Bob poured jigs, built rods, tied flies, and was always plotting his next fishing trip or strategy. He was well known as one of the best jig fisherman on the Fox River. As a DNR Technician years ago, he revised and updated electrofishing rigs for the whole State and won the Technician of the Year award for many years running.”

The statement concluded, “He was also a longtime crusader for dam removal. Bob will be remembered for the many things he did for Illinois streams over the years, but his most memorable asset was his generous spirit, and undying love for fish and fishing.”

Yorkville resident has past criminal history, state’s attorney notes

Allgood got in and drove off without permission of the owner in the stolen car. During an investigation conducted by the Oswego Police Department, the car was found abandoned in Sugar Grove. Allgood was later located by police and interviewed at which time he admitted to officers to stealing the vehicle when he could not locate a ride.”

Allgood plead guilty to possession of a stolen Nicholas motor vehicle and unAllgood lawful possession of a controlled substance on July 12, Weis said. Allgood has been in custody since his arrest on the stolen vehicle charges in 2015, Weis said.

Weis said Allgood has a criminal history that includes prior stolen vehicle cases, making this current offense a Class X felony.

“This type of sentence is necessary due to this defendant’s repeated violations of the criminal statutes,” Weis said. “With Allgood’s history of stealing cars, the judge was left with no other alternative but to sentenced Allgood to a term of prison that will prevent him from further criminal activities for some time.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Allgood will also be required to serve a term of mandatory supervised release, Weis said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Andrea Boyle prosecuted the case, and Allgood was represented by attorney Teresa McAdams, Weis said.

Channahon, Minooka women hurt in Kendall Township crash Two area women – one from Channahon and another from Minooka – were injured in a crash Saturday morning in Kendall County.

The incident occurred at 8:04 a.m. at Route 71 and East Highpoint Road in Kendall Township, according to a Kendall County Sheriff’s Office report.

A vehicle ran into the back of another vehicle that was stopped and waiting to turn left onto East Highpoint Road from Route 71, the report stated.

The impact of the crash caused the vehicle that was struck to go into a field.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit was a 66-year-old Channahon woman, according to the report, and her passenger was a 52-year-old Minooka woman. Both were injured in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle that struck them, Katie M. Elleson, 27, of Ottawa, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District responded to the scene.

A Kendall County judge has sentenced a Yorkville man to prison for stealing a car and possessing cocaine.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Friday that Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann sentenced Nicholas Allgood, 37, of the 9000 block of Route 34 in Yorkville, to eight and a half years in state prison for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and two years in state prison for unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Both sentences will be served concurrently, Weis said.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred on Nov. 3, 2015, in Oswego and Yorkville, Weis said.

According to Weis, charges were filed against Allgood when, in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, Yorkville police were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle.

“Upon making contact with Allgood, who was the driver of the vehicle, the officer was able to observe that Allgood was using cocaine,” Weis said in a press release. “Officers were able to collect additional cocaine from the person of Allgood. Allgood was then transported to a local area hospital.”

Weis continued, “After being released from the hospital that evening, Allgood went to the Circle K gas station

By LAURA M. MEDINA sports@kendallcountynow.com Plano took advantage of nearly every offensive opportunity it had in a 63-26 thrashing of visiting Sandwich on Friday night in the latest version of the War on Route 34.

The victory shifted the Reapers (2-2, 1-1 Interstate Eight Conference) back to the win column and put a hitch in the winless Indians’ quest for a possible postseason appearance.

One week after posting only eight points in a loss at Herscher, Plano capitalized nearly every time it touched the ball.

In fact, the team scored all seven of its possessions in the first half, in addition to a defensive return.

“I think last week we really knew that wasn’t us, and we watched the film and realized that everything was fixable,” Plano coach Brad Kunz said.

“We came out this week, put in some hard work, and I put a big on us on the effort and work. We made a change in the direction we were going with things.”

Plano quarterback Tyler Ward was near perfect in the air, connecting on 6 of 7 passing for 176 yards and two touchdowns – both to wide receiver Israel Adeoti (44 yards and 65 yards) in the first quarter. He also ran the ball six times for 32 yards and a touchdown of his own.

In that span, Adeoti finished with four catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Plano’s running game was anchored by running back Michael Marshall, who had six carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Levi Campbell and Brandon Davidson each rushed four times for 69 yards, while Jay Winter had 10 rushes for 37 yards and two

“That was definitely the biggest first quarter I’ve been a part of,” Kunz said. “It was an explosion. They were very angry about what happened last week, and I think they just kind of unleashed it that first quarter. We were able to do things we hadn’t done before, and that was a big plus for us.”

Sandwich wasn’t nearly as successful with the ball in the first half, but running back Zach Bosek turned in another strong performance in Week 4.

He finished with 22 carries for 190 yards and two touchdowns, as well as an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown.

Plano was busy offensively, but also thrived with some opportunistic defensive moments, including a safe-

ty, and Alex Chavez’s fumble return scoop and score. In all, the Reapers held a 43-12 lead after the opening 12 minutes of play.

“It was like a perfect storm – the early turnovers that they were able to capitalize on and then we’re missing tackles,” Sandwich coach Chris Van Dyke said. “They’re a good ballclub, and they took advantage early on.”

The Reapers settled in during the second quarter, getting touchdown runs from Winter and Marshall to make it a 56-12 score at halftime.

“When things aren’t going your way, your true character starts to show, and at the end of the first half, we started to lose our composure a little,” Van Dyke said. “At halftime, I told them that it has to be 0-0 in their

heads … to just go back and play the way that they’re capable of. “[Plano] is a good team, but we had mistakes in the first half that they jumped on and capitalized, which good teams do. When you play good teams, and you’re not consistent, the score will turn that way. In the second half, I was proud of the way they responded, and nobody hung their heads.”

A running clock served as the backdrop for the second half, where Plano started things out with Adeoti’s 42yard dash into the end zone.

Sandwich responded, as Sartori found receiver Dylan Franciscy on a 43-yard pass to set up sophomore receiver Jimmy Roop’s 2-yard score.

Sartori added the extra point to make it 63-19 with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Indians found the end zone again in the fourth on Bosek’s 9-yard run to cap the scoring.

“I think the big thing we preach is that this cannot be the highlight of our season,” Kunz said. “We have to remember how we felt after Herscher and realize that if we don’t come prepared, that can happen easily again.

We’re only as good as we are focused and as we are confident.”

With five games left in the season, Plano and Sandwich each have a chance to finish with a winning record.

Sandwich will welcome Streator (13) for Homecoming on Friday night, while the Reapers visit Manteno (3-1), which comes off a 21-14 win over Coal City.

“We have Manteno next week, and we haven’t won there in a really long time,” Kunz said. “It’s going to have to be a laser focus thing to where we’re ready to go, we’re not afraid of the bus ride, and we adjust to it.”

Ashley Martinez led the Reapers with a 48 followed by scores from Lexi Clark (52), May Long (57) and Shannen Paxton (67).

On Sept. 14, Plano defeated Dwight

215-230. Martinez was the medalist with a 48, while Clark shot a 49. Long (58) and Paxton (60) also scored for the Reapers.

Reaper Family, “Don’t let this be the highlight of your life.”

This was the advice of one of my college coaches, Butch Davis, after we (Miami Hurricanes) defeated the Florida State Seminoles, 27-24, in 2000. FSU was No. 1 in the country, and this was the first time we had beaten them in six years.

That game was important to us. The week before that game was something I’ll never forget. First off, ESPN was on campus all week following around our players to do a documentary on the week. It was also Homecoming week, which meant there was an old beat up car painted in FSU colors on campus that we could pay $2 and get to swing a sledge hammer at it. We got shirts that week that said 10/9/00 because our coaches believed that would be the day – the day of the game – that our program became a national powerhouse.

That week, the FSU chant was blaring 24/7 on speakers in our locker room and on our practice field. We were focused.

Similar to the FSU/Miami rivalry is the Plano/Sandwich rivalry. While we weren’t followed around by ESPN nor were we blaring music 24/7, our guys were focused. We saw this in our 43-12 first quarter lead last Friday. Our focus from last week paid off, and our seniors on their own took ownership of what needs to happen at practice.

This week that focus turns to Manteno – a team that has beaten us four of the last six times, and also has beaten us in Manteno since 2007.

We don’t want the first quarter from last week to be the “highlight of our life.” Our players understand what is at stake this week and we are hoping to continue an upward climb, improving each week and peaking late in the season.

We hope that you all can make it down to Manteno this Friday night for this I-8 conference showdown.

Plano breaks into win column

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After a tough road trip to Herscher last week, the Plano volleyball team bounced back with a win over Wilmington to snap a three-game skid in Interstate Eight Conference play.

The Reapers (5-10) hosted the Wildcats on Sept. 15 and won 27-29, 25-18, 2515. Emily Schopp had 11 kills, Eveline Chaidez had 14 points including two aces and added 17 digs and Bradi Gann had five kills, seven points with an ace and 19 digs. Alyssa Dolan also had nine points and 12 digs, Lexi Tisberger had four kills and two blocks and Allie Cross had eight points including two aces. Kaylee Read also made an impact with 19 assists, two aces and seven digs.

“It was really nice to pull out a win,” Plano coach Lisa Esmond said.

“Because we’re a young team, we allow

other teams to get back into the game sometimes. Our defense was great, our serve-receive was great and our hitting was great. We just didn’t always execute what we wanted to execute. It’s nice to see our younger kids stepping up and our seniors leading.”

Plano took a 26-28, 25-21, 21-25 loss at Herscher on Sept. 13. Read had 23 assists while Schopp had 12 kills, Gann had seven kills and Tisberger had six kills. Janiece Mosley had 20 digs and six points.

“The kids played hard and went three games. Thought we were going to pull out another win, but unfortunately it just didn’t roll that way,” Esmond said. “We could have passed better and played better defense, but overall with a young team, I expect those ups and downs.”

Plano will host Sandwich on Thursday before entering the Harvest Christian Invite on Saturday in Elgin.

With just seven games remaining in the regular season, the Plano soccer team used a full week of practice to fine tune its game plan to build momentum into the final stretch.

The Reapers (7-4-1) will see just how far they’ve come this season when they host Aurora Central Catholic on Thursday. Plano suffered its worst loss of the season, 5-1, to the Chargers in the Somonauk Breakout Tournament on Aug. 27.

“We are excited to replay ACC,” Plano coach Tom Dean said. “They beat us pretty early on, 5-1, which is the worst beating we’ve had this year. We’re excited to have a re-do and hopefully take it to them.”

The team took advantage of a seven-day schedule break by taking in a men’s soccer game at Aurora University, where the Spartans played to a 2-2 tie after two overtimes against Wheaton College.

“It was a good time and the guys enjoyed it,” Dean said. “We did a campus tour and talked to the coach about what it takes to play college soccer.”

Plano then enters a challenging stretch of games against Mendota, Sandwich, Wilmington and Genoa-Kingston during Plano’s Home-

coming week. The season ends against Streator and Peotone before Plano makes its debut in Class 2A after previously competing in the postseason as a Class 1A team.

“We’re one of the smallest 2A schools and we’re looking forward to the challenge it brings,” Dean said.

“These last games are significantly more challenging. Wilmington, Streator and Peotone should all finish in the top five of our conference and Genoa-Kingston usually puts a good team together.”

Plano picked up a 2-0 shutout win over Lisle on the Benedictine University field on Sept. 15 behind an unassisted goal from Julian Moreno at the 23 minute mark, and Brian Morales scored off an assist from Alban Hoti 31:00 into play.

Trevor Scott had 13 saves in a complete game shutout.

“Our defense has definitely grown together as a unit. To see them able to play under pressure and after a breakdown, to reset and reunite as a defense, it’s been nice to see them do that,” Dean said. “One of the highlights has just been watching our outside mids work together. Eric Nunez working with Alban Hoti and it’s been fun to watch them grow and be the threat they are going up the left side and springing Ivan [Alanis] to goal.”
