‘Opening day’ for tax season Kendall County property assessment changes published in today’s paper

By JOHN ETHEREDGE news@kendallcountynow.com The start – call it the Opening Day – of a new property tax season in Kendall County begins today with the publication of property assessment changes in today’s Plano Record.

Inside this edition of the paper, readers will find a special 84-page section listing all of the changes to assessments on individual properties throughout the county for the coming tax year.

County property owners should also soon receive a notice in the mail from the county informing them their assessment has been changed.

Under state law, all properties, with the exception of those zoned for agricultural use, must be assessed at one-third their fair market value.

This winter, county officials will use the new assessments in calculating how much each county property owner will owe on their annual tax bills. The county is expected to mail out the new bills late next April or in early May. The assessed value of all property in county increased an average of 7.5 percent over last year, according to the county’s supervisor of assessments.

Andy Nicoletti, the county’s chief assessing official, collects assessments from the nine townships – including a three-township assessment district – to prepare for the county’s property tax collection process.

This year’s taxes, to be paid in 2017, will be based on 2013, 2014 and 2015

Nicoletti said assessments increased across the county by about 7.5 percent, with the increases varying by township.

Nicoletti said the highest increase took place in Little Rock Township – its overall assessed value went up a little more than 18 percent. The other townships increased as follows over last year’s assessments: Big Grove, 1.12 percent; Bristol, 10.2 percent; Fox, no change; Kendall, 7.02 percent; Lisbon-­ NaAuSay-Seward multi-township district, 4.95 percent; and Oswego, 5.57 percent.

Nicoletti said there is some control of property tax increases because of the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, which was put in force by county voters in a November 1997 referendum.

Commonly referred to as the tax cap, the PTELL limits the total yearly increase in taxes extended, or billed, to 5 percent or the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower. Nicoletti said CPI was 0.7, so “it’s not gonna be a huge increase.”

Residents could see increases on the tax bills they receive next spring, Nicoletti confirmed, but it will depend on individual property values and the tax rates of the local government agencies.

“There is a potential for an increase in the taxes, but we are a PTELL county,” he said. “So typically as assessments increase, tax rates come down, and as assessments decrease, tax rates go up.”

their new assessments are in excess of the one-third fair market value, they have 30 days beginning today to file an appeal with the county’s Board of Review.

In the past couple years, approximately 500 people have appealed their property assessments to the county, Nicoletti said. However, he said residents should first try to negotiate an assessment change with their local township assessor.

“The best thing to do when people get their assessment notice, or if they see the publication, is to contact their township assessor and talk to them about the assessment,” he said. “Because sometimes things can be resolved with the township assessor without having to go through the formal Board of Review hearing.”

Nicoletti said there are typically two issues that people have when they appeal an assessment.

“There are usually two avenues where people will pursue that – houses that are like theirs or larger within their subdivision are assessed for less than they are, or they have comparable sales of properties that show that their house is worth less than what it’s assessed for,” he said.

However, like every year, Nicoletti stressed that nothing can be done once people receive their tax bills in the mail in May. The time to act is in the fall, when they see their assessments.

“There’s nothing that can be done by the time a tax bill comes out,” he said.

“The 30-day window you receive in the fall is when you have the time to contest the assessed value.”

SANDWICH – A Yorkville man previously convicted of falsely impersonating a police officer faces criminal charges for impersonating an emergency management worker at the Sandwich Fair.

Andrew R. Pepperdine, 28, of the 100 block of Colonial Parkway, Yorkville, was charged with falsely impersonating an emergency management worker. If convicted of the Class 4 felony, he could face one to three years in prison.

DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Sandwich Fairgrounds about 4:30 p.m. Saturday for

a report of a person impersonating an EMS worker. Deputies found that Pepperdine was wearing a Newark fire department shirt, pager and scanner while telling people he was an EMS worker, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Pepperdine told a Andrew R. Sandwich Fire DepartPepperdine ment EMS member he was an EMS worker while at the fair and reporting a woman who was unresponsive or in need of medical attention, according to court documents.

Pepperdine is not an EMS worker, according to the news release.

Pepperdine also was ticketed for possession of less than 2.5 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records.

In 2009, Pepperdine was charged with falsely impersonating a police officer. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to jail, according to DeKalb County Circuit Court records. Assistant State’s Attorney Timothy Mandel told Judge Marcy Buick Pepperdine also had a 2006 traffic offense that involved the use of blue oscillating lights.

Buick set bond at $4,000. Pepperdine is next due in court Oct. 4.

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Thanks to an alert financial expert, the city of Plano will save $180,000 in interest on bond payments over the next 13 years.

William L. Glass, associate with First Midstate Inc., of Bloomington, told city officials they could refinance their 2011 $4 million general obligation bond issue and save money on interest payments through 2031.

His company sold the bonds for the

city in 2011.

The new interest rate will be 2.09 percent. This is the lowest interest rates have been in several years, he told council members. The new rate is being offered by the J.P. Morgan Chase bank, he noted. The annual bond payment to J.P. Morgan for principal and interest will be a fixed rate each year, he said.

The city also will save an annual $500 fee it had been paying to a bank each year to administer the bond payments, Glass said.

The present interest rates range from 3.5 to 5.5 percent.

The bonds will be recallable again in seven years, meaning the city can refinance them again if interest rates are low enough, he said. Glass said Plano’s current bond rating is AA- and noted that this is a very high rating, which made it possible for the city to receive a low interest rate from J.P. Morgan Chase.

Annual bond payments will come from the utility tax collected by the city.

Alderman Bob Jones asked if this tax could be used for other city expenses or refunded to the residents. Glass said this was correct.

According to the payment chart, the city will save from $10,141 to $14,993 every year through 2031, when the bonds are retired.

The final payment will be made on Jan. 1, 2031.

City Attorney Tom Grant thanked Glass for notifying the city that they could refinance the bonds and save money.

John McGinnis, city engineer and director of public works, told council members Monday night that he will be retiring in November after 35 years with the city.

He gave no details but said he is announcing it in time for officials to start looking for a replacement.

Last July, Steve Eaves announced that he was retiring after 30 years in the police department, 27 of them as chief. He was replaced by Lt. Jonathan Whowell.

In other business, Whowell is seeking council approval to hire an additional police officer. The council will consider the request during a special meeting set for next Monday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. If approved, this would bring the number of uniformed officers with the department up to 20.

Whowell also will ask the council to hire an additional officer to fill a vacancy created when he was named chief earlier this year.

Whowell said there is an urgency in getting the two new patrolmen hired because the next police training academy will start soon and he wants the new officers to attend the next session.

If the new hires are approved, the new officers will be introduced and sworn in at the Monday meeting by Mayor Bob Hausler.

‘Long arm of the law’ has far reach

Thoughts on ethics, character

There’s an old saying in law enforcement that you can’t outrun a police radio.

The expression likely dates back decades to the time when radios were first installed in squad cars. We thought of that expression when we received a report from Oswego police last week concerning the arrest of a suspect in a child sexual assault case that originated in the village.

The report of the suspect’s tracking and eventual apprehension featured all the intrigue and drama of a topnotch detective thriller. Oswego police had been searching for the suspect since March, when the alleged incidents were reported to them by the victim’s parents.

The search heated up about two weeks ago when detectives learned the suspect had relocated to Arkansas but had traveled to Japan and was at-

tempting to leave that country for Australia. Detectives notified Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations Division who, in turn, notified Australian authorities.

Police said the Aussies revoked the suspect’s Australian travel visa the same day they were notified. Meanwhile, back home in Kendall County, the state’s attorney approved six felony charges against the suspect and a judge issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. Oswego detectives then notified Interpol of the warrant and Japanese authorities detained the suspect and then arranged to have him returned to the U.S. Oswego police detectives took the suspect into custody when he stepped off a plane at O’Hare Airport in Chicago. He is now awaiting trial

at the Kendall County jail in Yorkville According to police, the events leading to the suspect’s arrest played out over a period of just eight days, from Aug. 23 when they learned he had traveled to Japan to Aug. 31 when detectives picked him up at O’Hare.

It’s still true, in most cases you can’t outrun a police radio.

But now – thanks to countless more technological advances and the cooperation of police and other law enforcement agencies across the nation and in other countries – the long arm of the law truly has a long, long reach from Kendall County these days.

It’s good to know that when called upon to do so, local and county authorities are able to swiftly reach out and work with both domestic and foreign police agencies to bring suspects to justice.

To the Editor: It’s funny how difficult, challenging circumstances can either make us bitter or make us wiser. When examining life in general, I can see this truth.

We recently celebrated Labor Day, something for which I’m thankful. Labor Day reminds us that work is a good thing not something to be dreaded. But my husband’s short stint under a large union showed him otherwise. Because of the attitudes around him, he decided that his own children would learn well the value of work and a good work ethic. Contrary to what my husband saw, he learned work is valuable when strengthened by a strong ethic.

Right now, we are challenged by what we see in this current government administration. Long-held loyalties to our Constitution and our founding documents have been thrown out the window, supposedly to make us a “better America.”

We are now willing to trash the lessons of our founders, who forged their ideals due to their own hardships. They envisioned something unique that became the democratic republic under which we live. We trusted their views on limited government, capitalism etc. yet now we can’t recognize the Bill of Rights. This is to our shame.

There is an opportunity to learn, yet today we can’t even weed out socialistic ideals we face every day. We should recognize these challenges as spurring us on to learn more • Continued on page 5

Well, we’ve made it to the Ides of September, so we’ve got that going for us.

The kids are back in school; some have been back in class for some time now, which means parents are starting to get into the swing of their autumn schedules of acting as their private family Uber driver, on-call at all hours of the day and night.

As for the kids, they’ve all written their “What I did last summer” essays and now they’re getting right into the regular grind of trying to remember where their math book is and what day of the week their schedule says they’re supposed to have lunch at which time.

Retired teachers have calmed down, again realizing that seeing all those yellow school buses driving around doesn’t mean they’re slacking off because they’re not heading off to teach school every morning. Once in a while, though, one of them forgets and sets off to the nearest Chalkboard store to stock up on stickers and posters for their classroom before remem-

Simulation: The future of health care education Since the beginning of the early 1900s, educating health care professionals in institutions of higher education rather than hospital-based diploma and certification programs remained a long-term goal for many professions.

As the number of “higher education-based” programs increased, so did the interest in integrative health care curriculum and the use of complementary and alternative practices.

Examples of such practices included patient-centered care that focused on healing the whole person and integrating Western scientific medicine with a broad understanding of the nature of illness, healing and wellness.

The vision also recommended that a set of shared competencies across all health care professions, focused on patient-centered care, be required by regulatory bodies (state agencies and

The term simulation, or simulator, as used in health care usually refers to a situation, or device, that represents a simulated patient (or part of a patient) and interacts appropriately with the actions taken by the simulation participant (student or instructor).

It has been said that the interest in simulation for health care has derived from the heavy use of simulation for training and other purposes in non-medical industries such as nuclear power production, commercial aviation and the military. If you think about it, health care simulators are comparable to the flight simulators that have become well known to you and me.

Simulation is used to improve the education and training of students by emphasizing conceptual knowledge and basic skills as well as introduction to real-world responsibilities and work to be performed. The use of

simulation can be applied across nearly all health care domains including surgery, emergency medicine, critical care, radiology and obstetrics to name a few.

As Dean for Health Professions and Public Service at Waubonsee Community College, I envision the major role of simulation to be an educator, trainer and “rehearsal provider” for those students actually preparing for working in the delivery of health care.

Simulation is relevant during the didactic portion of curriculum as well as during any practicum, clinical or externship experiences. I also see simulation emerging as an important tool for ongoing training of experienced, health care personnel.

Waubonsee Community College’s Aurora Fox Valley Campus (formerly known as the Copley Campus) houses high tech simulators and simulation applications for registered nursing and allied health students. From fully interactive adult mannequins and trainers to the pediatric and neonate mannequins, students can learn in a controlled and “clinical replica”

environment under the supervision of college faculty.

In addition, video conferencing and advanced networking allow college faculty to provide real time guidance and feedback to students while the simulation is going on. For the most complex use of simulation, the typical form of feedback is a detailed post-simulation debriefing session, often using audio-video recordings of the scenario. Waiting until the scenario is finished allows the Waubonsee Community College nursing and allied health faculty to apply their collective skills without interruption but then allows them to critique the actions, decisions and behaviors of students.

Simulation in health care education is approaching its 20 to 25 years of steady progress, and the current cohort of leaders in medical simulation and health care will be the significant participants in determining which direction the future history will take.

The American Legion Riders from Sandwich Post 181 participated in the military honors following the funeral of Bradley “Steve” Barrett. He served as Post Commander of the Oswego American Legion Post 675 and was the superintendent of the Kendall County Veterans Assistance Commission, where he assisted many veterans. He served as a Corpsman in Vietnam and Desert Storm and retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer after 23 years of service. Steve was a decorated war veteran which included the Purple Heart. The funeral for Steve Barrett was on Sept. 3 at Dunn Funeral Home in Oswego. The procession led from the funeral home to the cemetery. ALR members in attendance were Juan and Connie Jaquez, Henry Herbst, Bob and Sandy Lawrence, and Ralph and Karla Torres.

Thousands of people of all ages turned out to enjoy the 129th Sandwich Fair last Wednesday through Sunday.

The oldest county fair in Illinois featured entertainment and exhibits for all ages and interests, from live music to carnival rides to trucks pulls to a demolition derby. Fair crowds also enjoyed the return of American country singer Frankie Ballard, who made his first fair appearance since 2011. Fern Dell to host drive-through pork chop and chicken dinner

The Fern Dell Historic Association will host a 5 B’s pork chop and chicken drivethrough dinner on Sept. 17 at the Fern Dell Museum, 9 E. Front St. in Newark.

The event will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Drive up to the museum, place your order, and pick up your dinner. Cost is $12 for two chops or half a chicken or a combo. A dinner roll, baked beans, coleslaw and applesauce are included in all meals.

Proceeds from all of Fern Dell fundraisers go toward the upkeep and renovation of the four museum buildings in Newark, the one-room Fern Dell School, the Misner Blacksmith Shop and the two museum buildings on East Front Street, as well as showcases and display areas in the museums.

Fern Dell Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. There is no admission, however donations are always accepted. The museum will have artifacts from the village of Lisbon on display sometime in September. The

The Lake Holiday Ladies Club’s 49th Annual Tour of Homes will take place on Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Tickets will cost $8 if bought in advance or $10 when purchased on the day of the tour. Call 815-498-3135 or 815498-9609 to reserve tickets. Children 12 or older are welcome to accompany the adults.

This yearly event begins at the Lake Holiday Lodge, 283 Easy Street in Somonauk. From Route 34 in Somonauk, tour-goers can take Gage Street south to Hoxsey Road, turning left onto Easy Street at the Lake Holiday sign.

Two houses are on the Somonauk side of the lake and two are on the Sandwich side. Detailed maps will be provided with the tickets. Complimentary beverages and homemade sweets will be served at the lodge.

Visitors are invited to purchase lunch at The Country Store, which also offers home-baked goods, fresh produce, jams, jellies and pickles. The Lakeside Shoppe will be displaying crafts and seasonal gifts. Attic Treasures features slightly used household articles.

Raffle prizes will be available for $1 each or 6 for $5. Seasonal table runners, a dinner-and-drinks basket, a single-serve blender, a Lucky Lottery tree or a relaxation basket will go home with the five lucky winners. The winners need not be present for the drawing.

Proceeds from this Tour of Homes fundraiser are used to benefit improvements at Lake Holiday as well as supporting area charitable organizations such as Valley West Hospital, Fox Valley Older Adults and Open Door Rehabilitation Center.

Voice of Elvis to start opera house’s season PLANO RECORD The Sandwich Opera House kicks off its 2015-16 season at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, with Doug Church – The Voice of Elvis. Church performs each and every show as a tribute out of respect for the “King.” He has awed his audiences for years, leaving them totally mesmerized and shaken. Church’s voice has been acknowledged by fellow artists as being the closest to “The King’s.”

The first Saturday in October you can enjoy the bluegrass sound of Monroe Crossing at 7 p.m. Oct. 1. Monroe Crossing is a favorite among bluegrass connoisseurs and non-bluegrass audiences alike with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and heartfelt originals. Friday night fright films will also be available in October where you can bring the family out for some classic thrillers.

The Neverly Brothers return to the Sandwich Opera House stage at 7 p.m.

Nov. 5, where they create a rock ’n’ roll evolution from Elvis to The Beatles.

November would not be complete without the music from The Giving Tree Band, local artists from Yorkville, on Nov. 19. The Giving Tree Band takes its cues from bluegrass, folk, Americana and other southern traditions.

Looking to create a “timeless” sound that evokes an earlier era, the band focused on acoustic instruments instead, creating a down-home sound that made room for guitar, banjo, upright bass, violin, mandolin, Dobro, dulcimer and ukulele.

December will see the return of Joseph Hall’s Elvis on Dec. 7, a “Nutcracker” performance on Dec. 10, and some classic Christmas movie favorites throughout the month. Keep warm in January as we watch some more favorites on screen.

Come celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend on Feb. 12 as the Drifters serenade us starting at 3 p.m. The Drifters were in the first class of rock ’n’ roll legends to be initiated into the Hall of Fame and the first African-American group to be inducted. Their classic tune, “Under The Boardwalk,” is the most played R&B record of all time.

Screenings of classic romantic comedies also are scheduled for the month of February.

On March 18 at 7 p.m., Bob and the Beachcombers will be performing the super surfing hits of the ’60s, some of the classic rock ’n’ roll of the ’50s, along with popular favorites from the ’70s and the ’80s. Lynn Dubajic, the city’s economic development consultant, said the city had been trying to hit that “magic number” of 100. Like Olson, she said she thinks the city will see more homebuilding before the end of the construction season.

“We were striving to hit that magic number 100, so it makes you wonder how high we can go this year,” she said. “We still have the months of September and October, certainly, and perhaps even in November. We have a lot of potential.”

The tax rate was increased from 3.75 percent to 6 percent, which is the maximum allowed and the same amount that most surrounding cities have been collecting.

Dubajic said building permit numbers generally dovetail with other statistics, such as spending.

“New homes generally often correlate to spending, because when somebody builds a new home, there are a lot of new costs involved that you don’t have with an existing home,” she said. “It might be window treatments or fencing or house accessories.

That’s an even stronger number when it’s a new home. These are all great indicators and they’re great numbers for us to go and compete against other ­communities for attracting new businesses.”

More than 100 new homes have been built in Yorkville since Jan. 1, a number the city hasn’t surpassed this early since 2008, according to housing figures.

City Administrator Bart Olson said this is a significant figure for the city.

“The milestone of 100 is important because it represents our highest new housing start total since 2008,” he said.

“And it represents another year of double-digit growth from the year prior.”

Last year, the city saw 84 building permits issued for new single-family homes.

“Things had kind of bottomed out at

the end of the 2000s, start of the 2010s, and it started to increase modestly,” Olson said. “But I think this is the first year where we’re already up 17 over last year, and that’s well into the double-digits, and truly with three months left to go we’d expect that number to get even higher.”

The city issued building permits for 158 new single-family homes in 2008, dropping to 64 in 2009 and 42 permits in 2010, its lowest point in the past 10 years and a far cry from its peak of 809 single-family home permits in 2006.

Olson said the numbers are coming from a variety of subdivisions, and from both large-scale builders like Pulte and local, custom builders.

“One of the best parts about our figure, is that it does come from a lot of different subdivisions,” he said. “Autumn Creek, obviously, Pulte is one of the biggest, but you’ve seen some of the local custom and semi-custom home builders have found lots in Heartland and Country Hills subdivision further south, CalAtlantic in Windett Ridge

Smith, 19, of the 700 block of Suzanne Drive, Sandwich, at an apartment in the 100 bock of East Lee Street on Sept. 13 at 12:43 a.m. on charges of failure to appear in court on a warrant and obstructing identification. Police said they were summoned to the residence in regards to a suspicious circumstance. Upon arrival, police said they spoke to the caller and heard someone jump out of a second-story window from inside the apartment. Police said they then apprehended the suspect, Smith, who initially gave them a false name of Jonathan Michael Smith. Police said they took Smith to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, where he is being held pending bail.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS DUI arrest on Bridge St. County sheriff’s deputies arrested Barboza Ricardo Gonzalez, 25, of the 500 block of Laurel Street, Elgin, after stopping his vehicle on Bridge Street and Somonauk Street in Yorkville on Sept. 11 at 2:24 a.m.

Police said they observed Gonzalez commit multiple moving violations prior to stopping his vehicle. Police said Gonzalez has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was ticketed for speeding 60 mph in a 35 mph zone and disobeying a traffic control signal.

Two cited in crash Stephen M. Lindstrom, 37, of the 600 block of Kimberly Lane, Montgomery, and Jack M. Maechtle, 17, of the 1600 block of Cypress Lane, Yorkville, received minor injuries when their vehicles collided on Eldamain Road at Galena Road in Bristol Township on Sept. 10 at 12:14 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office.

The Norsk Museum, 3656 E. 2631st St. in Sheridan, has received a $20,000 grant from Sons of Norway Cleng Peerson Lodge 5-525 lodge of Norway.

Dave Johnson, museum board president, said, “This generous gift will help provide much-needed maintenance of the museum building, formerly the Hauge Lutheran Church. Cost of renovations is estimated at $60,000.”

In May, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. Built about 1846, the structure represents a significant part of Norwegian-American history, Johnson said. The LaSalle County village of Norway housed the first permanent Norwegian settlement in America. The Rev. Elling Eielsen, church pastor, was the first ordained Norwegian Lutheran minister in America.

The Plano boys varsity soccer team (6-4-1) notched a 4-0 shutout win over Serena on Saturday. Ivan Alanis scored first on a ball from Alban Hoti.

Alanis returned the favor with a pass that Hoti rocketed past the keeper.

In the second half, Alanis scored again, assisted from a long ball from center back Emmanuel Valles. The final goal was tallied by Eric Nunez on a pass from Ivan. Trevor Scott earned five saves in the win.

On Monday, the Reapers dropped a 3-1 game to Herscher. Alanis scored the lone goal off a penalty kick in the first half. Scott had 16 saves over 80 minutes in goal.

Reaper Family, Fifteen years ago this week our country was united by tragedy. For many of us, September 11, 2001 was one of those days we will always remember where we were and what we were doing when we found out the Twin Towers had come under attack.

As for me, I remember just finishing a football workout in college and in the car riding to breakfast. The news came on the radio and I know at first we thought it had to be some sort of radio show prank. When we arrived to the cafeteria, the images of the towers were all over the news. The reality had set in, and in one way or another our world had changed. What ensued from this horrible tragedy was a time of unity and patriotism.

My high school coach, Gary Wheeler, used to always tell us, “It is always darkest right before the dawn.” Many times in life these words have stuck with me and also rang true. They go right along with some encouraging words that late groundskeeper and big time supporter of Reaper Football, Carl Ferguson once shared with me. He told me, “It will all be okay in the end, and if things aren’t okay, then this isn’t the end.”

After our loss on Friday on a rainy night in Herscher, things are not okay for us. The greatest thing about football is knowing that every twist and turn along the way allows for a life lesson to be taught to our players.

With the “War on 34” coming up, our guys will have to refocus and reunite if we are hoping to get back on track. It is easy to point fingers and put the blame on others in adversity. The lesson will be learned if all of us are able to look ourselves in the mirror, correct what we are lacking, and move forward together.

Plano football coach Brad Kunz spent the weekend drying off and analyzing film after a disappointing 42-12 loss at Herscher on Friday.

“It was a miserable night,” Kunz said. “Rain plays a factor and it’s whoever handles it the best and they definitely seemed to handle it the best that night. ... Herscher is a good team and they’re going to do a good job in our conference this year. They have been on a roll these last few weeks, and we’ve been up and down. Maybe the difference is that confidence in the way they’re playing.”

Heavy rain fell through the first half and resulted in a combined six fumbles, but it was Herscher that was able to sustain its drives into the end zone to take a 25-0 lead in the first half.

Herscher scored on a 74-yard pass and a 56-yard run to build a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Tyler Jones connected with his receiver for a 21-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 25-yard run put the Tigers back in the end zone just 21 seconds later.

“We had a pretty good defensive stop to start the game and their second drive we had them third-and-long and they pulled out a trick play with a double pass and caught us,” Kunz said. “We just couldn’t seem to get good field position, and we gave them a short field a few times.”

Plano’s lone score came on a 35yard fumble return by Ethan Kee with 5:38 to play in the opening half.

Although the rain stopped after the intermission, neither team scored on the muddy field. Plano put together a long third-quarter drive to reach the Herscher 25, but a holding penalty created a fourth-and-17 situation.

Reapers battle rain, wind Plano picks up win at Stillman Valley Invite despite tough conditions

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Plano girls’ golf team navigated a wet course played under difficult conditions in Bryon to place eighth in the Stillman Valley Invite last Saturday.

The Reapers played without their No. 4 golfer, Shannen Paxton, who was at a marching band competition in Champaign. Ashley Martinez came in with the top score for the Reapers, carding 100 to place 12th in the individual standings. Lexi Clark shot a 106 and May Long had a 109, and Plano’s next score came from Aubrey Flodstrom with a 156. Alejandro Alepizco also scored a 161.

Plano finished with a 471. Erie won with a 374 followed by Byron (401) and Eastland (419) in the 14-team event.

“My No. 5 and six played their best rounds ever and did very, very well.

If we had our No. 4, that might have put us around fourth place,” Plano coach Tammy McGinnis said. “That’s the nature of the game when you have four scores, but I’m confident that we would have finished at least fourth or fifth. Eighth place is not bad, and I was happy with our play considering the weather.”

Plano improved to 13-1 in dual matches, picking up wins over Sandwich and Aurora Central Catholic on Sept. 8 at Edgebrook with a round of 239. Martinez finished with a 50 to earn medalist honors while Long (57), Clark (59) and Paxton (73) rounded out the Reapers’ score. Neither Sandwich nor ACC fielded a complete team.

On Sept. 6, Plano defeated Indian Creek 207-261, despite Indian Creek’s Katherine Nolan earning medalist honors with a 43. Martinez shot a 44 and Clark had a 47, followed by Long (56) and Paxton (60).

“Our scores have been all over the place, but nonetheless, we’re winning and that’s the whole point,” McGinnis said. “Ashley has been our medalist and our No. 1. She’s been playing very well. I do not want them peaking right now. There comes a time when you play this much golf that you can go downhill, and that’s not happening – which is good.”
