Foli Park may get grant after all Plano would match $202,000 from state

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Plano City Council members learned this past week that they may receive a $202,000 grant for improvements to Foli Park on South Hale Street.

Mayor Bob Hausler told council members Aug. 29 that he received a letter from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources stating that the

city’s application for an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant is being reconsidered.

Wayne A. Rosenthal, IDNR director, noted that the project had been suspended sometime ago because the program had been discontinued by the state.

His letter to Hausler said a recently passed Public Act provides a $50 million appropriation for OSLAND grants and associated costs of programs.

“It is the intent of the Department to seek obligation of your grant and restore your project to its pre-suspension state,” he said in the letter.

Hausler told council members he

was surprised to learn the grant suspension had been lifted and that the grant was being approved. The city will match the $202,000, he said.

The city must use the money to complete the project within two years, according to Rosenthal.

Foli Park is a 28.7-acre wooded parkland on South Hale Street with a creek running through it. This is a great fishing spot or excellent for a relaxing walk along the creek to enjoy nature.

The park includes a 5-acre lake that is 22 feet deep at its deepest point. Anglers can catch a variety of fish including bluegill, channel catfish and largemouth bass.

FVOAS eatery a Sandwich Fair tradition

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – Beth Schmitt has assisted the Fox Valley Older Adult Services for several years by being volunteer/organizer of Grannie’s Eatery at the Sandwich Fair. She said they’ve tripled their business after moving to the larger screened-in facility that was formerly operated by the Sandwich Band Association.

Most Sandwich Fair visitors seem to enjoy their onion blossoms. Beth said nearly 20 50-pound bags of onions were used last year. The onions are cut in a manner so they open like a flower after they are dipped in batter and deep-fried.

Other favorites last year were pulled-pork and pulled-turkey sandwiches served in their own juice, not barbecue sauce; and 1,300 large pork tenderloin sandwiches from Polancics in Ottawa. Schmitt said there’s biscuits and gravy all day, as well as donuts and breakfast rolls in the morning.

For the last couple of years, there’s been lots of help from students who attend Culinary Arts classes at Indian Valley Vocational Center in Sandwich.

She said the classes help for an hour and a half in the morning and hour and a half in the afternoon Tuesday

DUI among charges Plano police arrested Juan E. Malacara, 36, of the 4000 block of Dillion Street, Plano, on Sept. 4 at 11:58 p.m. on Little Rock Road at Hemmingsen Street. Police said they were called to the area on a report of a near headon collision with a vehicle parked in the road.

PLANO POLICE REPORTS One hurt in crash A Plano resident, Ljummije Baftiri, 38, of the 600 block of Prairie Street, was injured and taken to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich after the vehicle he was driving was struck from behind on Lew Street at North Street on Sept. 1 at 3:41 p.m., Plano police reported.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Anthony Rivas, 20, no address given, was not hurt.

Warrant arrest Plano police arrested Alejandro Hernandez, 26, of the 500 block of North Avenue, Aurora, after they stopped his vehicle on School Street and Kay Street on Aug. 31 at 10:15 p.m.

Police said Hernandez was cited for driving without a valid driver’s license and was wanted on two warrants.

“Some common themes are frustration with the number of regulations, especially something like this where they try and be a one-stop shop, the challenges, all the labeling,” he said. “It might be that they have to have eight different menu labels throughout the store, literally daily changes because they might have different doughnut options or different sandwich options or specials during the day.

“And just to hear how challenging that is and costly that is and oftentimes, how the regulation is very punitive, so it’s not just, hey, let’s work together to make sure customers have good information. Boy, the store wants to do that, but a lot of things are written in a way that it’s just a ‘gotcha’ – that’s what I’m hearing from the companies or the stores I’m going to. They want to comply, they want to do the

right thing, but it’s piling on where it’s regulation after regulation.”

After a question-and-answer session with the media, Hultgren also reflected on his choice for president in the November election: Donald Trump.

Before the Republican National Convention, he said he was “warming” to Trump but was not committed to voting for him.

“To me, it’s a binary choice,” he said. “There’s two choices: It’s Hillary Clinton, it’s Donald Trump. I’m not supporting Hillary; I’m not going to do anything to help her. I don’t trust her.

I think everything she’s doing is about herself and her foundation and her family and her friends. So, very frustrating to me. New stuff every single day, more untruth, more things that she said that are just not true. So, I’m not going to support her; my choice is I’m going to support Trump. Do I agree with him on everything? No, I

don’t. But I also realize, I don’t know if there’s any other candidate, other than myself, that I agree with all the time.

And that’s a healthy process. Give and take, hopefully we’ll work through some of that stuff. I think he’s getting better on some things.”

Referring to the Republican nominee for vice president, Hultgren said, “I really like Mike Pence, I think he’s a great choice for vice president. I really like the process Trump is going through of how he’s going to select Supreme Court justices. To me, that’s hugely important, maybe the most important thing this president is going to do, whoever it is, is Supreme Court picks. It will be at least two, maybe three, maybe four Supreme Court justices, and I really respect the process that he’s going through much more than Hillary Clinton. So, just in those two reasons, that’s enough for me to vote for Donald Trump.”

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren visited the Casey’s General Store on Route 34 in Plano on Aug. 31 as part of a campaign organized by a convenience store trade association.

Hultgren, R-Plano, toured the gas station and kitchen area of the store and worked the counter, serving a couple customers, while talking with representatives of Casey’s about their concerns and issues.

Talking with the media, Hultgren also voiced support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “... My choice is I’m going to support Trump,” Hultgren said.

The Arlington, Va.-based National Association of Convenience Stores, or NACS, organized the event, called an NACS In Store.

“This is something I love to do, to get out and see what’s going on in the community, learn about different businesses, hearing from employees,” Hultgren said. “We heard from [NACS] that this is a program they have to allow congressmen to come in and tour, talk to some management but also with local staff, get a chance to serve some customers. And hear what’s working well, what are some of their frustrations that they’re facing, what are the challenges a store like this has to run, to be competitive, to really have what customers want and need.”

Hultgren said the store is a local employer and a benefit to the community.

“I think they employ 20 or 30 people here, so that’s a big impact in a community like Plano,” he said. “So grateful that they’re here and that they’re growing.”

Waubonsee College marks first 50 years This month Waubonsee Community College is beginning a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Voters in portions of Kendall, Kane, Will and LaSalle counties approved the establishment of the college district in a referendum in July 1966 and the following year the college offered its first classes in an abandoned Jewel store on River Street in downtown Aurora.

Since that time the college has continued to grow and as of this writing has served more than 290,000 students – including 33,568 degree and certificate earners – over the past half century.

Waubonsee has some especially strong ties to Kendall County. Nearly 30,000 of the college’s students have or currently reside in Kendall County.

According to enrollment figures provided by Waubonsee, just over 10,000 of the college’s students have come

Oswego, 7,900 from Montgomery, 6,500 from Yorkville, 4,000 from Plano and 3,200 from Sandwich.

In the college’s earliest years, the college offered evening classes in county high schools, including Oswego and Yorkville.

The county has also been home to some of the college’s most instrumental advocates and leaders, including longtime Collage Board President Richard Dickson of Yorkville and the late Richard Akerlow, a member of the college’s founding board of trustees.

Bill Prince, the college’s first athletic director and physical education department chairman, and Dr. Helen Baker, founding director of the college’s nursing education program, both live in Oswego.

Today, community colleges are widely accepted as necessary public institutions. But it’s important to remember that back in the 1960s not everyone saw the need for or under-

who has at some point in their life attended a class, earned a degree or a certificate, or participated in a program offered by Waubonsee. Those people have used the knowledge and the skills they learned to improve their own lives, their families, their businesses and the community at large.

The end result is that Kendall County and the rest of the college district is in a much better place today because those voters said “yes” on that July 1966 referendum to establish a community college district.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile log cabin about a mile north of Chester House’s claim, which was in Section 15 of what would one day become Kendall County’s Seward Township.

The men spent the winter of 1834-35 cutting timber with which to build their own cabins and fence off claims.

In 1835 all the men, with the exception of Dr. Corbin, bought land from the government, including Matteson’s 1,189 acres in Sections 9, 10, 15, 23, and 26 of Seward Township. All of it was well-watered by AuSable Creek.

It was an interesting group that worked through that winter of 1834. Dr. Corbin became a well-known physician in Plainfield. Jeremiah Cole was one of Kendall County’s first county board members and went on to hold a number of other county offices. Gleason became a solid citizen and well-known Kendall County farmer, as did Lamb.

Matteson moved on to Joliet and became involved in manufacturing and politics. Elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1840, Matteson served until 1852 when the Democrats nominated him for governor. Matteson won, garnering 80,645 votes to 64,405 for his Whig challenger, Edwin B. Webb, and 8,809 for Free-Soil candidate Dexter A. Knowlton. Little did anyone know that Illinois wouldn’t elect another Democratic governor for 36 years.

By the beginning of Matteson’s term in office, the state debt had reached more than $16 million, primarily due to loans taken out to build the I&M Canal.

But during his four years in office, Matteson reduced the debt by more than $4 million. The most momentous national event during Matteson’s term was passage of the Kansas-Nebraska

by Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, an Illinois Democrat.

The bill, which eliminated the Missouri Compromise limiting the spread of slavery into new states, eventually passed. But debate in Illinois even after the bill’s passage was intense, with Douglas coming in for sharp criticism from the state’s growing numbers of anti-slavery residents.

Matteson decided to cash in his political capital and run for the U.S. Senate in 1855, but with the Illinois General Assembly boiling over with controversy between pro- and anti-slavery factions, Democrats were political losers. Instead of the Democrat Matteson with the party’s pro-slavery baggage, Lyman Trumbull was elected by the General Assembly as the first Republican senator from Illinois.

Nevertheless, Matteson left the governor’s office in 1857 a popular man, having reduced the state debt, and by all accounts having been a good governor. But just two years later, Matteson found himself at the center of a serious scandal.

Apparently the state, lacking cash

due to the Panic of 1837, issued script in lieu of money in 1839 for work done on the I&M Canal. The script was redeemed, but for some reason it was never officially canceled.

Eventually, the redeemed script was sent to then-governor Matteson for safe-keeping (a bad idea, in retrospect).

In 1854, $300 of the script was redeemed again, and payment was granted. By 1857, more than $250,000 had been redeemed. Again. But it had already been redeemed once – in 1839. It was proved Matteson had cashed all of the script except the first batch for $300.

In the tradition of Illinois politics, he claimed innocence. And to his credit, he put his considerable real estate up for sale and returned $238,000 to the state, narrowly escaping being indicted for larceny. Matteson eventually moved to Chicago and later traveled extensively in Europe. For many years he was president of the Chicago and Alton Railroad, his problem with cashing already redeemed script apparently not barring him from the bare-knuckled world of 19th century railroading. Matteson died in Chicago on Jan. 31, 1873.

You have to wonder, back in the winter of 1834 when Matteson and his friends shared a rough log cabin in the AuSable timber, whether they talked about their hopes and dreams. Did Matteson confide that he wanted to be governor and maybe U.S. senator? Did Eli Gleason talk about his sweetheart, Clarissa Johnson, whom he would marry in 1837? Did Jeremiah Cole have any idea he would one day be Kendall County Clerk and county treasurer?

Joel Matteson hit the heights and occasional depths. All things considered, though, he didn’t do nearly as badly as some.

This explains why they have refused to allow an up-ordown vote on any of the meaningful and long-overdue reforms proposed by the Governor that would restore growth and opportunity to the Illinois economy; and

make state government more efficient and accountable.

Schools across Illinois have opened on time. We can and should be thankful for that. However, we’ll be right back where we started with another budget impasse and school funding being threatened unless legislators come together this fall and enact a budget with reforms that put the interests of families and taxpayers ahead of the special interests that have dominated Springfield far too long.

People really liked Joel Matteson. In fact, the early Kendall County settler was so likable that he was eventually elected governor of Illinois, where he did a good job by all accounts, only to be disgraced after leaving office.

Matteson was typical of many of the men who moved west to the Illinois frontier in the 1830s. Born in Watertown, New York, on Aug. 8, 1808, Matteson worked as a teacher and businessman before moving to South Carolina in 1831. There, he became a successful railroad construction foreman.

But in the early 1830s, the Illinois frontier was the place where ambitious men were making their marks.

So in 1834, Matteson moved to Illinois, possibly drawn to the growing state by the lure of the creation of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, proposed to open navigation between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River.

The canal’s promoters saw it as a future economic growth engine for Illinois, and their vision wasn’t far off the mark. As early as 1673, it had been suggested that a canal could easily connect Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, making a direct connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system. To that end, in 1816, the U.S. Government signed a treaty with Indian tribes of northern Illinois that included the cession of a canal corridor 10 miles on either side of the Chicago-DesPlaines-Illinois river system, all the way from Lake Michigan to Ottawa. Part of the cession, marked on old maps as the Indian Boundary Line, passed through southeastern Kendall County.

Matteson arrived in Kendall County in 1834. He decided to temporarily partner with Eli Gleason, Jeremiah Cole, Dr. O.J. Corbin and Daniel Lamb to carve their own homesteads out of Illinois’ frontier land. The group built a

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) requires that certain personal information – such as credit scores – be disclosed online when applying for a home mortgage. The CFPB says the information is anonymous, but skilled thieves can connect the dots between potential homeowners and their information, putting their finances at risk.

In order to improve the financial security of Americans, I introduced the Homeowner Information Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 4993) to eliminate the gap in private data security for Americans that apply for mortgages. It halts any federal agency or entity from publishing this personally identifiable information until all potential privacy concerns are addressed. The government then must make the case for publishing such data.

Brown-Miller American Legion Post 181, the Lewis P. Schultz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1486, and the city of Sandwich will conduct a 9/11 Remembrance and Remembrance Table ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the AG Land Stage on the Sandwich Fairgrounds.

“This 15th anniversary event will commemorate victims of the attack on America and U.S. military personnel killed in the War on Terrorism. It will also remember our POWs and MIAs who must never be forgotten,” said a news release from the organizers. “The members of the Sandwich American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the City of Sandwich ask everyone to remember the tragedy that pulled our nation into the War on Terrorism by attending this event at the fairgrounds.”

Annual Plano Oktoberfest scheduled for Sept. 23-25

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS One arrested in fight County sheriff’s deputies and police from multiple jurisdictions responded to a fight in progress at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township on Sept. 4 at 4:45 a.m. Police said when they arrived at the scene they observed at least seven to eight people involved in an altercation outside the apartments.

Police arrested Robert William Moore, 28, of Harbor Drive, on a charge of battery.

Police said the incident remains under investigation with additional charges pending.

Motorcyclists injured A Sandwich resident, James M. Castleton, 44, of the 30th block of Hummingbird Court, was injured when he lost control of his motorcycle while driving on Rogers Road at Whitfield Road in Millbrook on Sept. 2 at 5:47 p.m., according to county sheriff’s reports.

Police said Castleton was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. According to police, Castleton lost control of his motorcycle as he attempted to avoid a vehicle traveling westbound into his lane.

Hampton Road domestic County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic incident at a residence in the 100 block of Hampton Road, Boulder Hill, on Sept.

3 at 2:50 a.m. Police said they determined some individuals had been involved in a mutual pushing and grabbing, but did not wish

to sign complaints. Both individuals were unhurt in the incident and declined to sign complaints, according to police.

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – The Sandwich Fair Museum is a highlight of many fairgoers when they attend the fair, which opened Wednesday and will continue through Sunday.

The museum features a collection that focuses on the decades of the fair starting with 1896. For example, the 1970s display includes photos, posters and newspaper articles from 1976, documenting the first year Buttons the Clown entertained fairgoers and when litter was to be fed to Bi-Cens the “steer.”

Also in the exhibit are photos of Shelly West and The Arbors performing in 1986, the “Soup and Sandwich” year in 1996, and the CB&Q motor car and the new Sandwich Fair office in 2006.

The Sandwich Fair Museum is located in the original “Secretary” office where entry forms were submitted from those competing in baked goods, photography, garden produce and other categories.

It’s a dark green building next to the fence, south of the windmill and west of Commercial Building No. 2. Admission is free to the museum that’s hosted by community volunteers.

International effort helps catch alleged child rapist Suspect was attempting to fly to Australia from Japan when captured

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Oswego police arrested an Arkansas man at O’Hare International Airport on Aug. 31 in connection with an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted an Oswego boy, police said.

The investigation involved a joint effort by Oswego police, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and authorities from Japan and Australia as well as INTERPOL, the International Criminal Police Organization, according to Oswego police.

Police said Oswego detectives arrested Alexander S. Bowers, 28, of the 0-100 block of Crape Myrtle Place in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the airport at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 31 after his arrival on a flight from Tokyo.

Bowers was charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony, Oswego police said.

“Bowers is alleged to have had ongoing sexual contact with a male juvenile at an Oswego residence over a span of approximately four years, starting in

2008 when the victim was 9 years old and Bowers was 20 years old,” a release from the Oswego police stated.

Oswego police said the victim’s parents reported the contact to them once they learned of it this past March.

During the investigation, police determined that Bowers had relocated to Arkansas, and on Aug. 23, Oswego detecAlexander S. tives learned that he had traveled to Japan and Bowers was attempting to travel to Australia, police said.

“Oswego detectives notified ICE/ Homeland Security Investigations who notified Australian authorities of the investigation,” the Oswego police stated. “Australian authorities revoked Bowers’ Australian travel visa that same day.”

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the six felony charges against Bowers and a Kendall County judge issued a warrant for his arrest with a $1 million bond the following day, police said.

Oswego detectives notified INTERPOL of the warrant and Bowers was detained by Japanese authorities on Tuesday, Oswego police said.

Japanese authorities arranged to have Bowers returned to the U.S., and when he arrived at the airport he was taken into custody by Oswego detectives, transported to the Oswego police station, booked, processed and taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending court, police said.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies conducted an address verification on registered sex offender David Eichelberger of the 8000 block of Fox River Drive in Millbrook on June 13.

During the verification, deputies learned that Eichelberger may have been in violation of the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act, police said.

Following an investigation by the sheriff’s office, the State’s Attorney’s Office charged Eichelberger with one

count of failure to register as a sex offender, a Class 3 felony, on Aug. 17.

Eichelberger’s bond was set at $10,000.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Eichelberger on Aug. 30 in the 8000 block of Fox River Drive in Millbrook.

The Yorkville City Council has unanimously approved an objection to a towing business proposed just outside the city limits.

Aldermen voted at their Aug. 23 meeting objecting to a proposed rezoning for Jets Towing and Services, filed as J.A. Schleining LLC, from an agricultural use to a limited manufacturing district zoning. The company is proposing a towing and truck storage area on a 8.8-acre property at 790 Eldamain Road, just south of Galena Road in unincorporated Bristol Township.

Even though the property is not in the city limits,

state law allows for municipalities to voice objection or support for proposed rezoning within one and onehalf miles of the city limits.

The City Council’s action will now require the County Board to have eight out of 10 members vote in favor of the rezoning, according to the resolution passed by the city.

The request is slated to be reviewed by the County Board in October, according to Krysti Barksdale-Noble, the city’s community development director.

“The issue here is the property is currently in violation of the county regulations for an agriculturally zoned property,” Barksdale-Noble told the City Council at its meeting.

The Reapers notched a 3-2 win over Coal City in Tuesday’s Interstate Eight Conference matchup to improve to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1 in league action – marking Plano’s third victory in their last four outings.

“We are playing well. Will Benson, Emmanuel Valles, and Omar Alanis are coalescing as a defensive unit,” Plano coach Tom Dean said. “Alban Hoti is blossoming as a center fielder. He sees the field well, and never stops moving. Striker Ivan Alanis is a constant threat, and any team that ignores him does so at their own risk.

As a team we are becoming comfortable with each other, and each game Trevor Scott looks great in goal and continues to guard the net well. We are still seeing growth out of our outside mids, but they work hard and look to grow constantly.”

Despite a slow start, Plano recovered from a 1-0 deficit to take control in the second half. Ivan Alanis scored off an assist from Will Benson and Alanis found the net again when junior Alban Hoti played a corner kick which Alanis finished.

Coal City tied the game with about four minutes remaining in regulation,

but Alanis came through again – this time with the game-winner in the final 54 seconds.

This is Alanis’ second hat trick of the season. Trevor Scott finished with six saves in the win.

Plano will travel to Westmont on Thursday before visiting Serena on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Plano 3, Hinckley-Big Rock 2: Last Saturday, the Reapers notched a 3-2 win over Hinckley-Big Rock to improve to 3-3-1 on the season. Alanis tallied a hat trick, scoring the game winner with about 9:00 left in regulation. H-BR scored first, but Alanis scored the equalizer on a pass from Brian Morales. Hoti scored off an assist from Alanis for the go ahead goal before halftime.

In the second half, H-BR made the game even again, before Alanis’s second goal assisted by Benson. After another H-BR goal, Alanis placed a free kick for the game winning goal. Morales and midfielder Thomas Wicklatz contributed to the win. The defense was anchored by Emmanuel Valles, Omar Alanis and Benson. Scott had seven saves.

What a fun night we had Friday. It was great to get back to Reaper Stadium and experience the energy of a home crowd. The pork chop sandwiches were grilling, the band was rocking, the smoke filled the tunnel, and the Rowdies section went Hawaiian. All in all the stage was set for a good home opener for the Reapers. Our Reapers not only responded to that energy, but responded to the adversity felt from week one’s setback.

The way Friday night felt and ended up was a great life lesson for our players. In life, you will have things that happen in life that will feel like a loss.

Adversity is either something that starts a downward spiral, or it becomes the rallying point of a reality check that brings you back to focused. Of course, I would rather have had a reality check and learned in a win, but a lesson is a lesson, and it is better to learn this lesson previous to conference play. Our players responded with energy and focus, and it produced a nice win for us.

Speaking of conference play, we will head out on the long bus ride to Herscher this Friday for our first conference game of the year. This year, the I-8 has been very competitive and full of great teams as usual. Herscher has defeated Momence and Clifton Central by scores of 47-0 and 64-6. An opponent who has most definitely brought a lot of confidence into Week 3, Herscher is making its return to the I-8 Large after spending the last two years in the small division. Both of those years, Herscher was a playoff team, beating Bishop Mac in 2014 in the first round of the playoffs. We anticipate a great battle Friday night.

I hope all of you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend and you will be able to join us Friday night in Herscher. Before letting you go, I just wanted to take a second to thank Reckless Crossfit, who closed their doors last week. Reckless was a big part in training our athletes the last three years, as well as impacting many in our community. The Plano girls’ volleyball team endured a tough weekend of competition at the Oregon Invite last weekend, posting one win over five matches.

The Reapers (4-7) opened play on Friday with a 7-25, 17-25 loss to Eastland – the defending Class 1A state champions – before falling to Stillman Valley 14-25, 18-25.

Plano faced Lena-Winslow and lost 13-25, 14-25, but then picked up a big win over Erie, 25-9, 25-12, before closing the tournament with a close loss to Forreston, 23-25, 20-25.

Plano continues its road trip at Coal City and Reed-Custer this week before

traveling to Herscher on Sept. 13 to cap the eight-game stretch. The Reapers return home on Sept. 15 to host Wilmington.

Plano 2, Rochelle 1: The Reapers picked up a 25-15, 29-31, 25-23 win over Rochelle on Aug. 30. Emily Schopp had 15 kills, four blocks and seven points along with three aces to lead Plano. Allie Cross had six digs and 12 points as well as six ace serves.

Bradi Gann had eight kills and six digs, Alyssa Dolan finished with five kills and 10 digs and Evelyn Chaidez had 14 digs. Kaylee Read had four kills and four aces, Kenzie Waldrop had three assists and Lexie Tisberger contributed with a kill and one dig.

Plano scores on all five first-half possessions to win home opener

By MARK RAINES sports@kendallcountynow.com Familiar lyrical content has it that the stars might lie, but the numbers never do.

Boy, did the numbers speak volumes in Friday night’s Class 4A tilt between Harvard and host Plano.

All told, the highly touted Reapers torched the Hornets’ undermanned roster for six touchdowns in a 42-12 drubbing on a crisp evening.

With just 29 players (compared to 59 for Plano) Harvard, which prevailed via forfeit last Friday, saw live game action for the first time this season – and all too often looked like it.

The Reapers (1-1) scored on all five of their first-half possessions, with quarterback Tyler Ward completing seven of 10 aerials. Of his last five passes, one went for a TD to Levi Campbell and three more were good for touchdown strikes to Israel Adeoti for 55, 14 and 5 yards.

By the end of the third quarter, the running clock rule was in effect and the rout was on.

“We had a good film week,” Ward said. “No film on [Harvard], obviously, but we learned from last week.”

Plano opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run by Mauricio Perez with 7:30 on the clock in the first quarter, and Campbell followed with a 13-yard touchdown reception from Ward. Adeoti’s trio of second-quarter scores led to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Plano added a 24-yard touchdown run from Jay Winter in the third quarter before Harvard added two late scores in the final period. Winter finished with 120 yards on 12 carries. Michael Marshall added 105 yards rushing on five carries. Ward went 8-for-12 passing for 135 yards.

The Hornets (1-1) scored on a 78yard connection from Dylan Stephens to Adrian Serrano and, in the waning minutes on a 60-yard TD burst by Chad Nelson.

“It was tough,” Hornets coach Sean Saylor said. “We tried to fabricate a Week 1 scenario as best we could.

We’re small – especially compared to Plano. But we didn’t quit.”

Stephens, too, was quick to point to his team’s resilient nature.

“We knew what was coming but we tried our best,” Stephens said. “We’re
