Assessments on rise – again Little Rock Twp. sees biggest increase in property values at 18 percent over last year

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The assessed value of all property in Kendall County increased an average of 7.5 percent over last year, according to the county’s supervisor of assessments.

Andy Nicoletti, the county’s chief assessing official, collects assessments from the nine townships – including a three-township assessment district – to prepare for the county’s property tax collection process.

This year’s taxes, to be paid in 2017, will be based on 2013, 2014, and 2015 property values, Nicoletti said.

“The county, as a whole, went up about 7.5 percent,” he said. “It varied by township – some townships went up more than that, some townships went up less than that.”

Under state law, all properties – excluding those used for agricultural purposes – must be assessed at one-third their fair market value for property tax purposes.

Nicoletti said the highest increase took place in Little Rock Township – its overall assessed value went up a little more than 18 percent. The other townships increased as follows over last year’s assessments: Big Grove, 1.12 percent; Bristol, 10.2 percent; Fox, no change; Kendall, 7.02 percent; Lisbon-NaAuSay-Seward multi-township district, 4.95 percent; and Oswego, 5.57 percent.

Nicoletti said there is some control of property tax increases because of the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, which was put in force by county voters in a November 1997 referendum.

Kendall County supervisor of assessments cap, the PTELL limits the total yearly increase in taxes extended, or billed, to 5 percent or the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower. Nicoletti said CPI was 0.7, so “it’s not gonna be a huge increase.”

“In a PTELL county, the taxing districts set their actual levy, so if they need $1 million, they say, hey I need $1 million, and they divide that by the assessed value that’s within that district to come up with their rate,” he said.

“Whereas, in a non-PTELL county, they set the rate and say, we want $5 per $100 of assessed value, so if assessments decrease that will affect how much money they’ll collect. The whole point of PTELL was to keep things from going way up or coming way down, and keeping it more of a rolling type situation.”

Residents could see increases in their tax bills, Nicoletti confirmed, but it depends on individual property values and the tax rates of the local government agencies.

Nicoletti said the tentative publication date for assessments in this newspaper is Sept. 15. Property owners have 30 days from that publication date to file appeal paperwork for an appeal with the county’s Board of Review, he said, which would be Oct. 17.

In the past couple years, approximately 500 people have appealed their property assessments to the county, Nicoletti said. However, he said residents should first try to negotiate with their local township assessor.

“The best thing to do when people get their assessment notice, or if they see the publication, is to contact their township assessor and talk to them about the assessment,” he said. “Because sometimes things can be resolved with the township assessor without having to go through the formal Board of Review hearing.”

Nicoletti said there are typically two issues that people have when they appeal an assessment.

“There are usually two avenues where people will pursue that – houses that are like theirs or larger within their subdivision are assessed for less than they are, or they have comparable sales of properties that show that their house is worth less than what it’s assessed for,” he said. “So they can go on market value or uniformity – those are basically the two avenues that they can pursue.”

However, like every year, Nicoletti stressed that nothing can be done once people receive their tax bills in the mail in May. The time to act is in the fall, when they see their assessments.

“There’s nothing that can be done by the time a tax bill comes out,” he said.

“The 30-day window you receive in the fall is when you have the time to contest the assessed value.”

The County Regional Plan Commission was slated to discuss and most likely vote on the proposed Dirt Road Range, planned for a 38-acre site at 16502 Church Road in southern Kendall County, just north of the Kendall-Grundy county line, at its meeting

Aug. 24.

However, Senior Planner John Sterrett received a letter from Yorkville attorney Daniel J. Kramer, representing the petitioner, Robert Delaney, stating that his client was still working on revised drawings and “additional matters to submit to your department and to the Regional Plan Commission.”

Delaney is asking for a special use agricultural zoning so he can build the range.

The Regional Plan Commission granted the request, and the item will be on the agenda for the next RPC meeting, set for 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the

County Office Building at 111 W. Fox St. in Yorkville.

At the commission’s July meeting, a standing-room-only crowd of neighbors at the meeting voiced objections to the range, saying they were concerned about noise, additional traffic, and its effect on property values.

The range would be operational Tuesday through Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and would close at 8 p.m. or a half-hour before dusk, whichever comes first.

The range will have 24 shooting lanes with a shooting distance of 75 feet, according to county documents.

Wheeler said the penalty was justified because such a theft impacts an entire community.

“You’re not hurting one individual or one organization, you’re hurting so many,” he said. “Not-for-profits have a general purpose – that’s why they’ve been granted that 501(c)(3) status – but they’re serving a community. So the whole community is being taken from when these kinds of thefts occur. It impacts a larger entity – our community – and we think the penalty should be larger as well.”

Wheeler said he spoke with local prosecutors about the bill, including

Wheeler said such a theft hits volunteers and donors hard.

“My wife and I have talked about this more than I can explain,” he said.

“We feel as though we were stolen from, because... the most substantial part of our not-for-profit giving, our charitable giving, for years has been the Kendall County Food Pantry. So whether it’s thousands of dollars, or in our case thousands of hours, both for us, frankly, it’s a meaningful thing. It just rips your heart out that anyone would do that, or could do that.”

Such a theft also makes donors question whether they should be giving to the organization, at a time when the nonprofit needs support from the community, according to Wheeler.

“You’ll see the ‘why’ behind this is really to protect those volunteers, to protect the people who are in need, and the donors from thinking that they shouldn’t put their money in their community,” he said. “They should. That’s the best place to put it. That’s why we put this together.”

Friends planning book sale PLANO RECORD Book browsers will have thousands of titles from which to choose at the Yorkville Public Library’s eighth annual used book sale during Yorkville’s Hometown Days festivities. Money raised by the sale goes to the library.

A local legislator and former board chairman for the Kendall County Food Pantry wants those convicted of theft from nonprofit organizations punished more severely.

Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, has filed a bill stating that anyone convicted of theft from a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization be sentenced to one felony class higher than other convicted thieves. Theft that qualifies as a Class X felony would have a minimum penalty of seven years in state prison, according to the proposed bill.

Wheeler said he was spurred on by the alleged theft from the food pantry that is part of an ongoing law enforcement investigation. Wheeler served on the food pantry board until 2014.

Police executed search warrants on the food pantry building in Yorkville and a Kendall County residence in June. Police said the search warrants were part of an investigation regarding “suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the Kendall County

Food Pantry accounts.”

Six days after the search warrants were executed, Maria Spaeth, then the food pantry’s executive director, and her husband, Ken, resigned from their duties at the pantry, according to food pantry officials. Maria Spaeth, a Yorkville resident, was found dead two weeks later at her Lake Holiday vacation home of an apparent prescription drug overdose, according to DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

Recently, a new board took over the organization’s leadership and the name was changed to Kendall County Community Food Pantry Inc. Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced recently that a special prosecutor has been assigned to the theft case. Judge Timothy McCann appointed a special prosecutor from the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor.

Weis, a former food pantry board member, said the special prosecutor was needed “due to me being a potential witness in the case.”

Wheeler said the food pantry theft case has “hit home” for him.

“The issues that surround what happened here recently at the food pantry certainly hit home for me and my family,” he said. “The fact that what happened, and I don’t even know what

Last week, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the National Anthem prior to a game against the Green Bay Packers. Following the game, Kaepernick told reporters he was “not going to stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Right away, social media warriors went to work, calling Kaepernick ungrateful, unpatriotic, arrogant, and a few other words that can’t get printed in a family newspaper. There were even cases of him being called that vile, repugnant N word, which kind of goes to show you that social media is a great showcase of irony.

Best deal maker ever?

To the Editor: Donald Trump, aka the best deal maker ever, seems to be having trouble making deals along the campaign trail. The most recent failure centers around his purchase of over 3,500 hardback books titled “Crippled America: How to make America great again.” These books were purchased at full retail and given out at the convention.

Even the least distinguished authors can get discounts up to 40 percent off books they buy themselves to give away.

Just the other day Mr. Trump had his landlord increase his rent on his campaign headquarters in New York by over 400 percent to over a $150,000 month.

The Russians might be tougher negotiators than even Trump’s landlord. Mr. Trump is also paying full retail to Tap Air Inc. to rent his airplane to fly all over the place.

Mr. Trump is being criticized for traveling to localities where he has no chance of winning. But he has a nice

airplane to ride in and is racking up frequent flyer miles and airplane costs. These figures are from the Federal Election Commission, who tracks these sort of things from reports the candidate files.

So the best deal maker is paying out the nose for things he could get cheaper and therefore may not have as much money to spend on ads to promote his candidacy as the Election Day draws near and he tries to defeat “crooked Hillary.”

But if Trump Towers is raking in the rent, and Tap Air Inc., which Mr. Trump is the CEO, is raking in big fees for travel and the publisher of the book is getting full price and sending royalty checks back to the author, is Donald Trump a poor dealmaker? Or is he really a good businessman?

Watermelons were also popular at numerous roadside stands back in those days. Every once in a while, you’d see a handmade sign along the roadside, advertising “Ice Cold Watermelon Ahead,” and it was hard to drive on past in the days before auto air conditioners. Those stands were especially popular out in Kansas where we used to visit relatives during those hot, dry 1950s summers.

Nowadays, we buy our watermelons in supermarkets already cut into quarters. This summer, I’ve bought my share. Last year’s crop was, on balance, horrible, but we’ve had a lot better luck this year.

Worse yet, modem muskmelons are relatively hard to find, and cantaloupe, which are apparently all the rage these days, seem to have been crossbred with cannon balls. Their flesh, especially that of California melons, is hard and tasteless. But if you can find a Muscatine muskmelon at either a farm stand or at one of our local farmers’ markets, you’re in for a real treat.

The old days of sweet melons as picnic desserts are also pretty much gone. Family picnics in our fragmented times are out of style, and you can’t find blocks of ice to chip with an ice pick anyway.

But when the dog days of summer start arriving, I’m still programmed to search for sweet melons. And their taste still takes me back to the hot but fun days of those times decades ago.

To the Editor: I found three different and related articles in the Aug. 18 Record of interest.

The Forest Preserve board voted to not place a tax increase referendum on the November ballot. The discussion was that the board should not go to taxpayers for an increase until it has been assured that the most efficient use of current funds are in place. The same board voted to buy another horse for Ellis House. The same individuals, acting as the county board, went on record they would act on noise issues at private event venues in the county.

I see a connection between all these. I believe the former county board members, retired or voted out, who bought a private estate in the far southern reaches

Like overbearing out-of-town relatives, they came early and stayed late. But it looks like the dog days of summer have finally left, and good riddance I say.

Now we move into early fall, and dog lovers all over the area will troop to the hardware store to pick up extra vacuum cleaner bags to deal with the annual shedding ritual. When we used to have Shelties, they lost their hair in bunches, which made locating them easier, I suppose. But it was still a pain.

The days of our bare feet sticking to the kitchen floor from excess humidity, I hope, are finally exiting stage right for another year.

Usually, the dog days (July 3 to Aug. 11) get here about the time the watermelons and muskmelons are really starting to come on, which, as far as I’m concerned, makes the whole uncomfortable exercise worth the trouble.

Both kinds of melons were big parts of my life during summers growing up, first on a farm and later on what were then the outskirts of Oswego.

I didn’t realize it when I was a youngster, of course, but we owe our friends in Asia and Africa a debt of gratitude for the gift of both muskmelons and watermelons.

The muskmelon, named for the musky smell of its ripe golden flesh, is probably native to central Asia, and has been cultivated since at least the beginning of the Christian era. In fact, it was one of the first Old World plants introduced in the New World

by Europeans.

Plano students receive free books

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com “Everyone is a reader. Some just haven’t found their favorite book yet.” Or so goes a popular saying.

And to help students find that favorite book, school-age children attending Plano School District 88’s Back to School Bash Aug. 19 went home with a bag of free books.

Kathy Benoit, administrative assistant to Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia, said the district distributed hundreds of books to school-age children for preschool through grade six during the Bash.

Benoit said the books were donated

by Bernie’s Book Bank, which actually collects books for newborns through middle and high school age children.

Plano received more than 1,200 books during the summer through its partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, and the summer community meals program, which in turn is a partner of Bernie’s Books.

“We distributed about half of them at the Back to School Bash. The remainder will be available at school building open houses and/or will be distributed by teachers to students who will benefit from them,” she said.

Any school-age child from Plano who attended the Bash was eligible to get a bag of books (each bag had six books).

The books are broken down by grade level and volunteers at Bernie’s Books put variety in each bag of six books. Benoit said the bags she looked at included science books, history books, short novels, autobiographies, and just about every other subject of interest to children.

None of the books are meant for library use, she said. They are for families to take home and read together and help start a library at home. She

said Plano received a small quantity of the books last year and they were distributed at the district’s book bag distribution in early August 2015.

“We plan to accept them again next summer and distribute them through the school buildings at open houses or other family-oriented activities,” she said.

Plano has not collected books for Bernie’s Books in the past, but Benoit said she plans to share their information with teachers in District 88 schools in case they want to participate.

“Maybe it could be a charity event for future groups,” she said adding that she could not say whether Plano residents had donated to Bernie’s Books in the past.

“Bernie’s Books collects hundreds of thousands of new and gently used books and processes them into collections of six age-appropriate and leveled books. They are then delivered directly into the hands of children who have few or no books of their own,” Benoit said.

She said the goal of Bernie’s Book Bank is to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout the Chicago area.

Bernie’s Book Bank is the logistical bridge between where books are today, and are no longer being used, to where they are not, but are desperately needed. As a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, Bernie’s Books relies on donations of books, volunteers and funding.

It has distributed more than 5.5 million books since 2009 and is growing rapidly to serve every at-risk child in the Chicago area, before expanding to other major cities in America. Anyone wanting to donate or volunteer at Bernie’s Books can find more information at berniesbookbank.org.

Parents of students in Plano School District 88 will see a slight increase in the cost of meals purchased in the schools, thanks to the state and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, according to Kathy Benoit, administrative assistant to the superintendent.

“Regrettably, the USDA and state of Illinois forced the school district to increase breakfast and lunch prices by 10 cents,” she said.

Breakfast at all buildings will now be $1.10, and lunch for P.H. Miller, Centennial and Emily Johns will be $2.50. Lunch at the middle and high schools will be $2.60. But families approved for reduced-price meals will not see these costs increase, she said.

“Despite this required change from the government, registration fees will not increase and families approved for reduced-price meals will see their registration fees lower than previous years,” she said.

She noted that the registration fees have not changed since 2006-07 and this year is no different.

The district has remained committed to maintaining a consistent fee structure over time even though there has been a rise in the cost of services in almost every area.

Student registration fees for this year are $120 for kindergarten through sixth grade, $160 for seventh and eighth grades, and $200 for the four high school grades.

SANDWICH – The 129th annual Sandwich Fair will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 11, always the Wednesday through Sunday following Labor Day. The oldest county fair in Illinois has a new Hospitality Pavilion across from the familiar Round Office and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Building.

The Pavilion will have flaps to protect fairgoers from rain and offer shade. It also provides tables and chairs for resting, greeting friends and eating that once-a-year favorite, Fair Food.

There are plenty of modern conveniences, as well. Besides having a topof-the-line website, www.sandwichfair. com, there’s a DeKalb County Sheriff’s and Emergency Care Center across from the Hospitality Pavilion, and handicapped-accessible exhibit halls, commercial buildings, lunch stands and restrooms.

Traditional horse races in the very early days of the Sandwich Fair were reported as being run through the heavily wooded fairgrounds, with some riders taking shortcuts, trying to beat their neighbors.

Now it’s harness racing on the halfmile track starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. No admission is charged.

Main Stage entertainment by the racetrack includes a free show at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, featuring lumberjacks competing in log-rolling on water, pole-climbing and cutting wood with buck saws. It’s first come, first served seating.

Visitors are invited to watch the lumberjack feats at other fairgrounds venues throughout the five-day fair, free.

Tickets for the National Truck Pulling Association truck pulls held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, are $20 each per adult for Hot Seats, reserved seats and infield seats. Tickets for children age 12 and under are $5 for infield seats.

All tickets to see the American country singer, songwriter and guitarist Frankie Ballard at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept.

9, are $25 each for general admission.

Ballard’s debut appearance at the Grand Ole Opry was in 2011, and he’s had several hit recordings including “Helluva Life,” and “Young and Crazy.”

Raffle prizes will be available for $1 each or 6 for $5. Seasonal table runners, a dinner-

and-drinks basket, a single-serve blender, a Lucky Lottery tree or a relaxation basket will go home with the five lucky winners.

Proceeds from this Tour of Homes fundraiser are used to benefit improvements at Lake Holiday as well as supporting area charitable organizations such as Valley West Hospital, Fox Valley Older Adults and Open Door Rehabilitation Center.

Tickets have been printed, the steer has been purchased, and the site is prepared. The Sandwich Lions Club is ready for its annual steer raffle to be held once again during the five days of the Sandwich Fair.

This project, which was established more than 50 years ago, is the major fundraiser of the Sandwich Lions Club. Proceeds are used to fund the various humanitarian projects that the Lions support throughout the year.

The American Legion Riders Post 181 of Sandwich and Wendell Dominy of Plano American Legion Post 395 conducted the Andrew Kuebrich Memorial 5K Run/Walk on Aug. 21. Ralph Torres, ALR director and junior vice president with the Plano American Legion, coordinated the event. Approximately 150 runners participated.

Several members from the American Legion Riders Post 181 of Sandwich helped register runners and were on their bikes directing traffic and runners at key intersections of the run. The run will be back next year as the “Rockin’ 5K Run” hosted by Zander DJ Service benefiting local scholarships.

Yorkville City Council puts caboose up for sale

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council voted unanimously Aug. 23 to sell off a vintage train caboose that has been sitting on tracks in the city’s downtown area for many years.

Aldermen voted to publish a notice of sale and accept offers to buy and move the caboose.

Alderman Carlo Colosimo said he was happy to see the caboose go.

“I have asked for this thing to be sold for six years,” he said. “A complete waste of taxpayer money when it was purchased. I can’t stress that enough; I’m glad to see it go.”

The caboose was built in 1967 and served the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and later the Burlington Northern Railroad.

The city purchased the caboose from Angela Fuller Cline of Nebraska for $10,500 in 2007.

Officials had planned to refurbish the 250-square foot caboose and move it to the train-themed Bristol Station Park in the Whispering Meadows subdivision.

However, according to Parks and Recreation Director Tim Evans, the project was placed on hold because of the projected cost – between $20,000 and $30,000 – to move and update the caboose.

“Over the years, interested individuals have contacted staff about the status and availability of the caboose,” Evans wrote in a memo to aldermen.

“Park Board and staff have also discussed potential uses and placement of the caboose; however, as of today, no final decision has been made.”

Police had been searching for the vehicle since the killings. Police have said there were signs that someone had forced their way into the Wilsons’ home, and an autopsy found that both died after being beaten with a blunt object.

Robert Wilson was last seen in Sycamore the afternoon of Aug. 14 at the Sycamore Moose Patricia A. Lodge, where he was an Wilson active member, Scott has said.

“The fact that we’ve recovered a vehicle does give us a significant boost, and it allows us to focus on other areas of the investigation,” Scott Robert said. “Now that we have Wilson the car we can concentrate on other avenues, other leads, as we move forward.”

Police are operating under the assumption that whoever killed the Wilsons stole Patricia Wilson’s vehicle, though that’s not a certainty, Scott said.

“The assumption would be someone who was directly involved in the crime or someone who was aware of it [had the car], but there’s no guarantees,” Scott said. “So if there’s something else there, we’d be glad to hear about that.”

The sheriff’s office also announced that the reward for information on the crime has increased to $25,000 as a result of private donations.

SYCAMORE – Police said Aug. 25 they had recovered a vehicle that was taken from the rural Sycamore home of two people who were found slain earlier this month.

The car, a white 2010 Chevrolet Impala, belonged to Patricia A. Wilson, 85. Wilson and her son, Robert Wilson, 64, were found dead inside their home at 16058 Old State Road on Aug. 15 by a family member.

The vehicle was found Aug. 24 in Chicago, legally parked near the Lincoln Park Zoo on Chicago’s north side, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said. It did not appear to have been altered or damaged, Scott said.

A tactical unit with the Chicago police had been on the lookout for the vehicle and found it early Aug. 24, Scott said. Police kept the vehicle under surveillance for several hours before bringing it back to DeKalb County late in the day, Scott said.

“They watched it, but they determined through their investigation that it had been there quite awhile and no one was returning to it,” Scott said.

Police went through the vehicle overnight to recover potential evidence, which has been sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, Scott said.

Investigators also are parsing through video taken on the public way around the vehicle, Scott said.

A juvenile faces a charge of motor vehicle theft in connection with the theft of a school bus, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

Plano volleyball ends 2-2 at invite PLANO RECORD After a season-opening loss to Somonauk on Aug. 23, the Plano volleyball team entered the Spring Valley Hall invite on Aug. 27 and played four games, going 2-2 overall.

The Reapers (2-3) defeated Galva 259, 25-16, but lost their next match to Spring Valley Hall, 23-25, 24-26. Plano fell to Fieldcrest 17-25, 21-25, and ended the day with a victory over St. Bede, 25-17, 25-17.

After a home match against Rochelle on Tuesday, Plano will enter the two-day Oregon Invite on Friday.

Next week takes Plano to Coal City on Sept. 6 and Reed-Custer on Sept. 8 in Interstate Eight Conference play.

If your symptoms of sleep apnea are mild or moderate, oral appliances worn at night and fitted by your dentist may be an effective option for treatment. The most commonly used oral device, the mandibular advancement device (MAD), is similar to a sports mouthguard. It snaps over the upper and lower dental arches, and allows the lower jaw to be brought forward. This option is much less intrusive than a CPAP (sleeping mask) device, and is gentle and easy to wear. Arrested in shots fired incident County sheriff’s deputies arrested Erin Kendall Gracy, 38, of the 9200 block of Finnie Road, Newark, on Aug. 28 at 10 p.m. at her residence. Police said they were summoned to the residence on a report of a domestic violence situation involving shots fired. Police said Gracy has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and criminal damage to property.

Stabbing unfounded County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an incident in which a male in the 100 block of Fernwood Road called police to report he stabbed someone Aug. 25 at 2:52 a.m. Police said they later determined that no one was stabbed or otherwise harmed at the residence.

The Reapers (2-2-1) remain at the .500 mark heading into a home game against Manteno on Thursday, with a non-conference match against Hinckley-Big Rock slated for Saturday at 10 a.m. The Interstate Eight Conference season resumes at Coal City next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

“Manteno is the returning conference champion, and although they graduated six All-Conference players, we’re excited to see where we sit and judge where we are as a program,” Plano coach Tom Dean said.

On Aug. 25, Plano shut out ReedCuster 5-0 to notch its first win of the year. The Reapers scored first with the goal from junior Alban Hoti, assisted

by Ivan Alanis in the first minute of play. Agustin Garcia followed with his first goal of the year on a pass from Alanis as well.

During the second half, Plano found the back of the net three more times on goals from Hoti assisted by Eric Nunez, Alanis assisted by Hoti, and junior Brian Morales on a play from Markell Lopez. The defense led by the trio of Will Benson, Emmanuel Valles and Omar Alanis helped keeper Trevor Scott record the shutout. Scott had six saves in the win.

“They beat us on penalty kicks to end our conference season last year, so we were able to come out and score two in the first couple minutes and make it 5-0 at the end,” Dean said. “This year we just have a good group of guys who can shoot the ball well, and it showed

On Saturday, Plano opened the Somonauk Breakout Tournament with a 2-2 tie against Somonauk after taking a 1-0 halftime lead off a goal by Ivan Alanis, assisted by Hoti. In the second half, Plano extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal from Julian Moreno assisted by Benson. Scott had nine saves.

“In the history of our program, we’ve never beat Somonauk. We made it 2-0 and Somonauk didn’t like that, so they played incredibly well to bring it back 2-2,” Dean said. “The boys were really excited about that. They played well, and the goals scored were well put together. That’s a nice thing to cut your teeth against and look at the program that Somonauk has had the last few years and where we have been.”

In Game 2, Plano fell to Aurora Central Catholic, 5-1, despite trailing 1-0 at halftime. The Chargers took command of the game with three more goals before the Reapers answered with a goal from Ivan Alanis assisted by Gerardo Barraza. Scott had 11 saves in loss.

Plano closed out the day with a 7-2 win over Reed-Custer in a rematch with the Comets from just two days earlier. Scoring for Plano was Arreguin, assisted by Ivan Alanis, who scored assisted by Morales.

Then, Morales scored on a pass from Omar Alanis, and Moreno scored on a corner kick from Nunez. Nunez also played Hoti to find the back of the net.

Omar Alanis notched a goal as well as Benson, with both assists coming from Ivan Alanis. Scott shut out the first half of the game with no saves. Freshman Estevan Cervantes earned three saves in his first career game defending the net.

The Reapers got a return touchdown of their own with one minute left in the first half. Adeoti took the kick 80 yards for a score, displaying the athleticism Johnsburg was wary of.

Johnsburg stretched its lead to 30-14 in the third quarter before the Reapers made one more charge. Ward scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, keeping it up the middle for an 18-yard touchdown.

The defense forced a Johnsburg punt and it looked like Plano might be back in the game. Instead, Johnsburg’s pass rush sacked Ward, forcing a fumble out of the end zone for a safety.

The Skyhawks overwhelmed Ward for much of the night, bringing him down for a loss or no gain six times.

Ward took responsibility, saying he probably should have gotten rid of the ball quicker in some of those instances. Kunz didn’t blame the offensive line, instead praising Johnsburg’s pressure.

“I like really our line, we have a lot of three-year starters,” Kunz said.

“When guys are bringing blitzes like they were tonight it’s tough not to be confused. There were a couple times where they brought more than we had and it’s really hard to get the ball out when that happens.”

Ward said they had to find the good in the loss, whether it was experience, playoff points or film to study: “There’s going to be somebody down the road so we’ll have some film on it to learn from it.”

The Reapers host Harvard this Friday.

Reaper Family, I am excited to once again have the opportunity to write to you each week in the Coach’s Corner. The Reapers are preparing for their home opener vs. Harvard after dropping our first road contest at Johnsburg last Friday.

They say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This has never seemed as true to me as it does now that I have twin 8-month-old boys. It is amazing that once you have experienced parenthood, you begin to look around and see how many people are influencing your life and the lives of your children. While this is true in the life of a child, it is also true in our Reaper Nation family.

When we suit up for our home game on Friday night, there will have been many people who have made that night possible. It starts with the parents of our players who have done a tremendous job helping these young men become who they are to this point. With our football program we have a group called the F-PAC, which stands for Football Parent Advisory Committee. These parents join together to help make the experience of high school football for our kids the best it could possibly be.

We also have our Sports Boosters who have over the last decade plus provided for our sports teams opportunities to have some of the best equipment, uniforms, and other things that bring pride to our kids for our program. If you ever wonder who keeps that concession stand going with the pork chop sandwiches on Friday night, it starts with our Boosters.

Friday night wouldn’t be possible without the effort of our resident actor of Chicago Fire/Med/PD fame, Scott Lucas, who takes the time to put in extra effort to make the game field look extra nice for our team and fans. Greg and Dee Dee Gould, Dave Lee, Mark Parris, Don Moody and others spend their Friday nights making sure we have accurate stats and videos and pictures to remember our Friday nights by. There are many more people who contribute to what will happen Friday night, but this gives you a snapshot of everyone that it takes to help give us a Friday night where as a community we can be together supporting our Reapers.

Plano is a special place with a great mix of tradition and new ideas that allows for us to not only give these kids a great experience, but contribute to the molding of their lives.

JOHNSBURG – Each highlight of Plano’s season-opener seemed to be followed by a setback. Whenever the Reapers looked to be building momentum or mounting a comeback Friday night against Johnsburg, the Skyhawks soon responded.

The Reapers’ first score was followed by giving up a touchdown on the kickoff. A fourth-quarter touchdown was followed by a safety. Quarterback Tyler Ward finished with 208 passing yards, finding Isreal Adeoti twice for 69 yards, but the running game managed just 16 yards.

In the end the Reapers lost, 32-20, in a non-conference game at Johnsburg.

“It was definitely a slow start and response because we just kind of came out flat,” Plano coach Brad Kunz said.

“Three-and-out on the first drive, we weren’t expecting that and I think it kind of shocked us and we made some adjustments.”

Kunz said he wanted to get his running game going early, but the Reapers were thrown off by the aggressive pressure brought by the Johnsburg defense.

“With our defense we like to pressure a lot … and we knew they had some really dangerous skill kids, which we saw, and we needed to get to the quarterback before they could get the ball to the kids,” Johnsburg coach Dan DeBoeuf said.

The Reapers (0-1) picked up the pace in the second and third quarters and were able to start scoring.

Ward said they used more of their quick passing plays to establish a rhythm and open up the Skyhawks (10).

“I think we just kind of stuck to our game plan more,” Kunz said. “I really wanted to establish our running game but we weren’t able to do that. Johnsburg did a great job with their blitzes and their run blitzes, we just weren’t able to get the run game going. So we tried to put it in the hands of our passing game and it started bringing us back and we hit some screens and kind of got things going for a little while there.”

Plano got on the board midway through the second quarter, when Jay Winter capped a 74-yard drive with a 1-yard push for a touchdown. But

Setting faster pace Reapers open season with new coach at Morris Early Bird Invite

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Alanna Harju is hoping to bring some stability – and increased mileage – to the Plano cross country program.

Harju, a first-year English teacher at Plano High School, comes to the program after the Reapers lost both Kristy Lehner and Rob Wegley from last season’s coaching staff. She previously taught at Harvest Christian and coached cross country at the middle school level in the Elgin-based private school.

The marathon runner understands the importance of building mileage and developing a strong training foundation, but starts the season at a disadvantage having missed most of the summer offseason with the Reapers.

She was only recently hired into the position prior to the Aug. 10 start.

“I trained for a half Ironman this summer, so I’ve got a lot of miles in me so to me, three miles is nothing,” Harju said. “I’ve been pushing them hard.

It was obvious in the first week of the season who didn’t run this summer.

Two miles a week isn’t summer running. I’m really excited for next season just to be able to spend that summer with them keeping up conditioning and giving them workouts. The first week has really brought to light that, but they have really great attitudes.

I’m just bringing in more mileage than they’re used to.”

The Plano boys’ squad is comprised of five runners, and will add Ryan Jernigan to the roster later this season when the senior juggles football with the cross country conference meet.

Sophomore Gorge Aguilar is currently leading the Reapers, and was the first to the finish in the season opener on Aug. 24 at the Morris Early Bird Invite. Aguilar clocked in at 20:42 to place 25th overall.

“He’s a coach’s dream. He has the heart and the athletic ability,” Harju said. “He came in at the end of the season last year and is my top runner right now. The first invite was good for him. He’s excited and is a really hard worker, so I’m really excited about this season for him.”

Heriaud (22:29), senior Jovany Burciaga (23:08) and freshman Juan Aguilar (31:21) complete the roster for Plano.

The Reapers took eighth in the team standings in Morris.

On the girls’ team, senior Demetra Phylactos returns, and is currently leading the pack. Phylactos finished in 26:03.4 to take 40th in Morris.

She was followed into the finish by sophomore teammate Rachelle Gomez (26:29), freshman Linnea Collins (28:45), freshman Marina Mercado

(30:43), sophomore Yali Chavez (30:59), freshman Brooke Morgan (33:11) and senior Sarah Roberts (34:36). Plano finished 10th overall.

“It was a real eye-opener,” Harju said. “It was a good reference point for our workouts, too.”

Plano will travel to Seneca for the annual Twilight in the Woods invite on Friday before a trip to Detweiller Park for the Plano Invite on Sept. 10 for the next large-scale race for the Reapers.
