Food pantry gets new leaders New board, new name among changes for Kendall County group

The organization changed its name to the Kendall County Community Food Pantry Inc., as the ownership and responsibility for the operations were turned over to a new group, according to pantry officials.

Greg Witek, Little Rock-Fox fire chief, CEO of PagePath Technologies and KenCom dispatch executive board chair, was named board chairman.

“The Kendall County Community Food Pantry Inc. has been established to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the pantry and the continued care for and support of the existing clients who depend on the pantry for so many of their weekly needs,” Witek said.

“Speaking for the new corporation’s directors, we’re honored to be asked in and now associated with such a dedicated and caring team of volunteers.”

Complaints about rural banquet facilities often go to sheriff’s office, but zoning dept. has jurisdiction

Kendall County zoning officials are talking about coordinating more with the sheriff’s office when it comes to noise complaints about banquet facilities in rural areas.

Banquet facilities in rural areas are becoming more common in the county, used for weddings, baby showers and other events.

Last month, the County Board approved a special use zoning for a new banquet facility planned for 9111 Ashley Road, in a split 5-3 vote, over the objections of neighbors who said such a facility would bring noise and additional traffic to the area. The venue will be owned operated by Ron and Dave Walker, who own the Whitetail Ridge Golf Club on Route 126.

Some residents at the hearing said there had been noise complaints about other rural banquet facilities that had not been addressed.

were executed, Maria Spaeth, then the food pantry’s executive director, and her husband, Ken, resigned from their duties at the pantry, according to food pantry officials.

Maria Spaeth, a Yorkville resident, was found dead in her Lake Holiday vacation home June 21. DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said Spaeth died of a prescription drug overdose, but that it was undetermined whether it was intentional or accidental.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced recently that a special prosecutor has been assigned to the theft case. Judge Timothy McCann appointed a special prosecutor from the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor.

Weis said the special prosecutor was needed “due to me being a potential witness in the case.”

The organization has seen some times of controversy in the past three months.

The Yorkville Police Department served search warrants on the food pantry building in Yorkville and on a Kendall County residence June 1.

Police said the search warrants were part of an investigation, which is ongoing, regarding “suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the Kendall County Food Pantry accounts.”

During a recent County Board Committee-of-the-Whole meeting, board member Scott Gryder, chairman of the board’s Planning, Building and Zoning Committee, acknowledged that the board was unaware of the complaints.

“One of the things that came out of a previous special use hearing is there may have been some folks who had concerns about the noise levels at some of the different banquet halls, and we had no idea that there were those concerns,” Gryder said. “So this was an opportunity for us to talk about it again and talk about how we as a county can get some of that information back.”

Enforcement of noise rules for such rural facilities can be complicated.

John Sterrett, the county’s senior planner, explained that the county’s noise ordinance does not apply to agricultural districts, including areas that have a special use zoning. In other words, it does not apply to those rural banquet facilities.

The facilities do have to abide by

noise rules specifically for such facilities that are laid out in the county’s zoning ordinance, Sterrett explained.

However, neighbors who call in a noise complaint about a banquet facility will call the sheriff’s office to make that complaint. The sheriff’s office enforces the county’s noise ordinance, but since the noise ordinance does not apply to agricultural areas, there is little they can do. The noise complaint instead needs to be sent to the county’s Planning, Building and Zoning Department.

“The big difference, too, between the noise ordinance and the regulations on noise for banquet hall facilities, is the noise ordinance is enforced by the sheriff’s office, whereas the regulations on noise for special uses, that’s a zoning matter, so that’s something that our office actually enforces,” Sterrett said.

Sterrett said the sheriff’s office has offered to collaborate with the zoning officials when it comes to such noise complaints.

“And then they would send us that information too, so we can review that and determine if there is a violation of

“It’s not an automatic,” he said.

“This is simply to let the voters tell us what they want, and if you say that you don’t even want to listen to them, then I understand that vote. But that’s what this is about. This isn’t about how you look in front of a voter.”

Wehrli said the district has a balanced budget and that officials have “done a lot of work” to get the finances in order.

“This is to allow the Scott Gryder voters to tell us,” he said.

“We’re letting the voters tell us.”

Gryder, however, said he agreed with Davidson. He said it is the first year that the district has had a balanced budget without using interest from their bond.

“I really think it’s premature to go back and ask taxpayers for more money,” Gryder said. “It’s going to add 95 cents to the tax bill, which ends up being $100,000 or so a year which is 10 percent of our overall budget. We’re not at a point, I don’t think, where we can go back and ask the taxpayers. We haven’t earned that right yet, to say we need another $100,000 or 10 percent of our budget. We still have more work to do, and if we get to that point it will be down the road, but we’re just not there yet.”

Gilmour said she was “surprised” that the referendum issue “came up so

the special use, if it’s something that becomes ongoing, or if it’s something that we need to address and possibly even contact that property owner and let them know that they’re in violation of the special use. I think this is gonna help us out a lot moving forward using the sheriff’s office.”

Sterrett said of the sheriff’s office, “While they can’t enforce the noise ordinance – they can’t issue a ticket or they can’t do any kind of enforcement on their part for that noise that’s ex-

ceeding the limit – they can still document it and send it to our office and we’d take that up as a zoning matter.”

Undersheriff Harold Martin said at the meeting that they want to be on the same page with zoning officials.

“We’re here to help the residents when we get a complaint from the resident about the loud music which, they would call us to start with,” he said. “We would go out to the location where the issue is, and we would take decibel readings from that location.

At that point, we would explain to the resident that we would then turn that information over to building and zoning, at which point building and zoning will get involved and I would assume start an educational process with them first before actually fining them. And then if it happens again we’ll do the same thing and follow up again. But we wanted to make sure that we all work together on this and we’re all on the same page. Because that’s what helps the citizens.”

The Kendall County Forest Preserve District Board has voted down placing a referendum on November’s ballot for a tax increase that would help maintain its preserves.

The board voted 7-2 on Tuesday morning against putting the referendum on the November ballot, with Board President Jeff Wehrli and County Board Chairman John Shaw voting in favor of placing it on the ballot, and board members Robert “H.D.” Davidson, Judy Gilmour, Dan Koukol, John Purcell, Scott Gryder, Matthew Prochaska and Lynn Cullick voting against it. Board member Elizabeth Flowers was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.

The referendum would have asked voters for a property tax increase equivalent to 95 cents a year on a $100,000 home, according to Forest Preserve Director David Guritz. The most recent amount of property taxes collected by the district was $545,148, and the increase would have given the district $670,301, according to the referendum documents.

Prior to the vote, Anthony Miceli of Speer Financial, the district’s bond counsel, discussed an upcoming refunding, or refinancing, of bonds originally sold by the district in 2007 as part of the open space referendum approved by voters that year. The refunding

would take place in January or February of next year, and would likely save the county taxpayers $1.8 million in interest over the next 10 years, or around $2.60 per year on a $100,000 home, according to Guritz.

The next elected board would vote on the bond refinancing, according to Guritz. New board members will take their seats in December.

Guritz argued that the cost of the tax increase would be outweighed by the savings realized via the bond re- Robert financing.

“H.D.” At the meeting, Da- Davidson vidson said he was hesitant to vote on a binding referendum, which would require the board to approve the tax increase if voters approved the referendum. He said the forest preserve needs to look at other revenue possibilities before going to the voters for a tax increase.

“I ain’t saying that the forest preserve don’t need it,” he said. “I’m not saying down the road we don’t need it.

I just think we need to be looking. ...

We rolled up our sleeves, and I think we’re doing a good job with the budget.

We’re getting things more under control. I like the direction we’re headed.

I just can’t jump up here and support a binding referendum.”

Wehrli said the referendum question was “to let the voters decide

quickly,” noting that she first saw the binding referendum resolution at a district board meeting last Thursday.

“I don’t feel like we’ve even discussed it as a board,” she said.

Wehrli said the vote wasn’t on a tax increase but to “ask the voters.” He said he hoped there would be “80-some percent or so” registered voters voting in the November election.

“This is a true indication of how they feel... what kind of job we’re doing as a group,” he said. “This is not to say we will take it, this is to ask the voters.

That to me is kind of a no-brainer.”

Guritz said the “pressures we are seeing on the forest preserve district are increasing.” The open space referendum that was approved in 2007 helped the district preserve approximately 2,500 acres of open space, instead of the projected 1,500 acres, partly because of district officials leveraging funds using federal and state grants, Guritz explained.

“Now we’ve got a big job to do out there,” he said. “We’re doing a whole lot now with a little bit. But we have a whole lot more to do. We’ll continue to look for hope in the impossible with that, but we also know that as acres come under restoration we’re going to see declining revenues from cropland leases. And we have more infrastructure out there – trails, buildings, etc. We’re going to be very, very hardpressed to make it all work in the coming years.”

Following the vote to not place the referendum on the ballot, Wehrli called it a “message to the voters.”

Planting seeds as school starts

While the fiddler plays

The last half of the calendar year is not typically a time one thinks about starting anew – that mentality is usually associated with the spring and the growth that comes with it.

But August is truly a time of planting seeds – at least in the minds of area students.

Plano School District 88 students headed back to class this past Tuesday. The signs of that are everywhere: From the school supply displays in area stores to the teachers who have been setting up classrooms in buildings recently cleaned by area custodians, it’s evident we’re on the cusp of a new academic year.

Whether you’re a parent wondering how your child will do this year, an educator aiming to plan that perfect first day or a student hoping they will be seated next to a best friend, there likely is some anxiety as that first day approaches.

But there also is a sense of excitement, as a new school year also comes with the hope that this could be the best grade level yet.

That hope can be realized if all involved takes on a team mentality, with every member committed to providing a successful educational experience.

Teachers have to plan engaging lessons and provide opportunities for all students to explore

different ways to learn. Administrators need to implement goals that can be met. School boards need to be good stewards of tax dollars. State lawmakers need to make sure any new laws they pass do not add any more unfunded mandates to already taxes districts.

Parents need to partner with educators by making sure their child does homework, is attentive and respectful in class, and encourage them to do their best.

And the students themselves are more than just passengers along the way – in many ways, they should be the drivers on their educational journey.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

That is sage advice from the incomparable Dr. Seuss. Students have the power to have a great school year be investing in their education by participating in class, engaging in extracurricular activities and setting personal goals to continually add to their body of knowledge.

Our wish is that the excitement and hope that permeates that first day of class remains throughout the year, and the seeds planted now yield a great crop when students hear the final bell of the 2016-17 academic year.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING SYMPATHY Most people know enough to send a sympathy card, either store-bought or personal note, to a friend who has suffered a loss. The best of these expressions has some sincere sentiment behind them. Sympathy has its best effects when it is based on good communications – and communication goes two ways. So the question is: How should we acknowledge expressions of sympathy?

Ideally, all responses should be handwritten.

It is hard to condemn sending a preprinted acknowledgment or commercial card which people often use. They are better than nothing.

For more personal acts of kindness, such as flowers or personal letters, a handwritten note is a reasonable expectation. It does not have to be long; one or two sentences will do nicely. “Thank you for your kindness. Your friendship means a great deal to me.” That is enough to let friends know that their support is appreciated.

So we’ve made it past July, and August is more than halfway through. College kids are headed back to campus and public school students are thronging the office supply, shoe and clothing stores as they (and their parents) gird their loins for the start of another academic year.

Here at the Matile Manse, we’ve just wrapped up another summer. The family reunion and its amazing potluck dinner were enjoyed by all last Sunday, and that usually marks the beginning of the end of summer for us, which is appropriate since August is National Picnic Month.

August also marks the season when corn and soybeans are beginning to show their autumn coats as the growing season draws to a close. Tomatoes are ripening all over the Fox Valley and folks are canning to beat the band, as well as chowing down on bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches as many meals as they can before the late summer’s bounty finishes up for another year.

Here at Junk Mail Central, we’ve been collecting quite a pile of the stuff, so I thought I’d sort through some of it as I file most of it in the circular file for recycling. Take a little trip back in time with me, please: It’s mid-February. The temperature has been below freezing for weeks, and snow covers the landscape.

I take my Biology 122 students at Waubonsee Community College out to collect samples from Blackberry Creek.

Amid the grumbling about the cold, students remark at how anything could still be alive in these conditions.

But, we are looking at this from a human perspective. We traipse out to the far north edge of the Sugar Grove Campus, crack through the ice in Blackberry Creek, and an insulated, living world is found beneath the surface. Just because we need parkas, hats, and gloves, doesn’t mean the invertebrates do. They can survive out here year-round.

It’s not just their survival in extreme temperatures that is remarkable, but their ability to survive the pollutants that wash in from agricultural fields, from salt-covered winter roads in the suburbs, and from urban development. This is a unique body of water, and a unique set of organisms that inhabit it. And we probably take it for granted.

If you live north of the college, you cross Blackberry Creek on Route 47 every day on your commute. It snakes through the communities of Elburn, Kaneville, Sugar Grove, Aurora, Montgomery and Yorkville. It dictates our watershed – the entire region draining into this body of water. It is an amazing ecosystem.

So, underneath the surface, what lies inside, and what story do they tell?

Dip in an aquatic net, and you will find what look like tiny shrimp scuttling around. They are a tiny crustacean that flourish in water with few fish predators. They can withstand some of the most polluted water conditions. You might also see a tiny, red worm. This is called a bloodworm, and is a larva of a

Smallville Superfest 2016 is this weekend

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Smallville Superfest is returning to Plano for the fifth year, thanks to Nicole Diaz, Jim Martens, Brad Gardner, and a host of other volunteers who keep the event alive and growing each year.

The event this year will be held Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 18-21, throughout the downtown area.

Nicole Diaz said they formed a committee five years ago to organize the event.

“We had always wanted a community festival for neighbors becoming friends and families making memories, so we began meeting on the first Tuesday of each month.”

Diaz recalled that in the summer of 2011, Warner Brothers and DC Comics chose Plano to represent “Smallville” in the 2013 Superman movie “Man of Steel.”

“We thought it was a great idea to celebrate the movie here,” she said.

“Smallville was a special place where a certain superhero came to earth and spent his childhood days. It

was here in Smallville that a mild-mannered boy learned the value of truth, justice, and the American way. So we started with just a few months to have a plan in place,” Diaz said.

She said the 16 committee members and more than 40 volunteers spend several hundred hours planning the program each year.

“This past May we had a Spring Fling fundraiser for the festival and brought in more than 8,000 people to enjoy a carnival. This carnival will be returning double the size for Smallville Superfest,” she said.

She said the festival will start with the carnival on Thursday at John and West streets from 5 to 10 p.m. And it will continue to operate during all four days.

Friday will be known as Plano Pride Day with events taking place from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday will be Super Hero Day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, will be Public Service Recognition Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the four-day event will come to a close.

Subs to get pay increase

Substitute teachers who work in Plano School District 88 will be paid the same amount as other area districts as of this year.

School board members Monday night increased the rates paid for subs on recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia.

“The substitute teacher pay rate of $95 [per day] has not been increased for more than four years,” he told board members.

To keep up with neighboring communities and to help recruit more substitute teachers, the board concurred with a recommendation of the administrative team to increase the daily fee to $100 from $95 effective this year.

“This would be in line with districts like Plainfield, Sandwich and Somonauk. And, as an added incentive, after a substitute teacher has subbed 60 days in the Plano schools during the 2016-17 year, their pay will increase to $120 per day for the remainder of that year,” Garcia said.

He said the days do not have to be consecutive. The $120 per day will be applied after 60 random days in any combination of buildings.

“We hope this will help us retain more subs for the middle and latter part of the year, when our teacher absences tend to increase due to illnesses, meet-

ings and other reasons,” Garcia added.

He said they are always looking for ways to help the subs and noted that money is certainly one of them.

“Having good substitute teachers makes a difference between students having a productive day and just going through the motions.

“We know that once a substitute comes here, they love coming here because they know that our kids are terrific, and they love working with our administrators. But we think this will solidify a larger pool of substitutes for us,” he added.

In response to a board member’s question, he said they have the figures on how often they need subs, but don’t have specific numbers of times one of their own teachers has to substitute teach a class.

Norma Green, administrative assistant in fiscal services, said she budgeted $50,000 per building for substitute teachers. Garcia said they estimated that 10-15 teachers will be hired for 60 or more days during the year.

The increase received unanimous approval from the board.

The district has five schools. They are Plano High School, freshman through senior (grades 9-12); Plano Middle School, grades 7 and 8; Emily G. Johns Intermediate School, grades 4, 5 and 6; Centennial School, grades 2 and 3; and P.H. Miller School, grades pre-k, kindergarten and first grade.

St. Mary launches capital campaign Effort to construct new hall and gym nearing $1 million in commitments PLANO RECORD Fr. Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, and Principal Joe Scarpino recently announced that more than $970,000 has been raised for the Growing for the Future Capital Campaign for St. Mary Church and School.

This capital campaign, conducted with guidance from the Steier Group, seeks to raise $3.7 million over three years for a new fellowship hall and regulation-size gym.

For more than a decade, St. Mary’s has been unable to host athletic events because the existing gym is too small.

In addition, under Fr. Davy’s leadership, the parish has seen a blossoming of parish ministries that require more space.

The Growing for the Future Capital Campaign was launched Aug. 6 in conjunction with the annual Taste of St. Mary’s parish festival, or kermés.

The active phase of the campaign will

conclude in eight weeks with a final push during all Masses the weekend of Oct. 8-9.

Leaders of St. Mary have devised a three-tiered fundraising plan that taps into the cooperative spirit of both school families and church members. It calls for starting construction once the fundraising goals have been reached.

The plan includes constructing the gym, which will also serve as a fellowship hall for parish and school gatherings. Construction of a full-service kitchen to host banquets, funeral luncheons, wedding receptions, school assemblies and many other events is the next priority. The full plan adds at least four large meeting rooms and expanded storage space. New parish offices to support the parish’s many active ministries are also part of the full plan.

The work furthers a master plan the parish developed in 2007. Originally, the plan called for first expanding the

nave of the church to increase seating from 400 to 1,000 or more. But parish growth has not yet necessitated that big of a church expansion, and the new fellowship hall will relieve some pressure by providing overflow capacity.

The people of St. Mary have instead discerned an immediate need for more office and ministry space and the new fellowship hall/gym.

The St. Mary leadership team devised the three-tiered fundraising approach as a way to meet school and church needs in a fiscally responsible manner. The leadership team is committed to avoiding debt and shaping the final plan based on the amount of funds raised.

St. Mary School, the only private Catholic school in Kendall County, is experiencing tremendous growth in its enrollment.

Principal Scarpino says he is confident that more than 230 students will be enrolled this coming school year.

This fall will also mark the first time in the school’s history that it will feature two sections of kindergarten. Just three years ago, when Scarpino became principal, enrollment was at 176 students.

Scarpino attributes the growth to

commitment by everyone in the community – pastor, teachers, parish staff, parents, students, parishioners, etc. “Everybody has played a pivotal role. We all believe in St. Mary and are willing to donate our time, talent and treasure to ensure that it continues to grow,” he said.

The decision to move forward with a capital campaign received approval from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet based on a review of St. Mary’s needs and benefits and the improved economic conditions. As articulated in the statement of need the parish submitted to the diocese: “Just as before the downturn, Plano and Kendall County are well-suited for growth. St. Mary is the crosshairs of that growth potential.”

The Kendall County Forest Preserve Board voted narrowly Tuesday to buy a new horse for Ellis House and Equestrian Center near Minooka.

The board voted 5-4 to purchase Candyman as a new horse for lessons at the facility. Board President Jeff Wehrli, County Board Chairman John Shaw, and board members John Purcell, Lynn Cullick and Matthew Prochaska voted in favor of the purchase, while board members Robert “H.D.” Davidson, Scott Gryder, Dan Koukol and Judy Gilmour voted against the purchase.

Candyman’s purchase price of $500 will be reimbursed by the Forest Foundation of Kendall County, Forest Pre-

serve Director David Guritz told the board.

Gilmour asked about past health issues with Candyman. Guritz confirmed that Candyman is about 16 years old, has arthritis and will need injections twice a year for an annual cost of $500.

However, Guritz explained that Ellis uses slower horses for those taking beginner level lessons.

“We don’t work our horses very hard, because these are beginners,” he said. “Actually we prefer horses that have a little less pep in them in order to teach riders.”

In other horse news, Guritz reported that Shadow, another horse at Ellis, was recovering from a bacterial infection and will be out of service between four and six weeks.

Cullick asked if, by the time Shadow is fully recovered, it would be the slow season for lessons.

Guritz said he was “hoping not,” adding that the Family Fun Day in the fall will help promote the Forest Preserve District’s services.

County buys horse for Ellis House in split vote

Three of six stolen puppies found alive Have been reunited with owners in Newark SHAW MEDIA Six Black Mouth Cur puppies were stolen from a Newark barn last Thursday, but while three of the puppies were found dead outside a store in Warrenville, the remaining three had been reunited with their owners

by Monday evening.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the puppies were reported stolen from a barn in the 16000 block of Route 52 in Newark on Thursday. The following day, three of the puppies were found deceased, but another was found alive and returned to its owner.

Monday evening, the sheriff’s office reported that the two remaining missing puppies were found alive in Chicago.

“A good Samaritan located them in a park downtown, and ultimately contacted his veterinarian office to get them checked out,” the sheriff’s office

noted in a press release. “One of the veterinarian technicians had noticed that they looked very similar to the puppies that were stolen, and contacted detectives. They were also checked out by the vet, and were found to be in good health.”

The sheriff’s office stated, “The victim was able to positively identify the puppies, and they have been returned home. We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the public, who thankfully flooded our inbox with tips that proved invaluable in this case. Another special thank you to Duke Animal Hospital in Chicago for remembering these guys, and getting in touch with us!”

That is a bold statement considering Plano graduated two-time state placewinner Rylie Loux and their No. 2 golfer in Arieanna Accidentale. Last season, Plano set an all-time low team average of 192.42.

“I think our team scores are going to be pretty close to last year’s scores, even losing two really good golfers,” McGinnis said. “Some of my top two or three scores are already showing big improvements from last year.”

In addition to the four returning players, Plano will add junior newcomer Aubrey Flodstrom and freshmen Alejandra Alepizco and Lexie Gutzwiller.

“Aubrey is picking up the game really well and the freshmen are right where they need to be,” McGinnis said.

“We’re looking forward to the season starting. They’ve worked hard and they’re ready to go.”

Plano was unchallenged in the I-8 last season with a perfect 16-0 dual record, but finished second in the tournament behind Lisle. The Reapers will not face the Lions until the final regular season match on Sept. 29. Dwight will host the I-8 tournament on Sept.

27, and regional play begins on Oct. 5.

Knispel to lead young lineup Plano golfer Tyler Knispel will have a unique vantage point of the program’s future.

As the lone senior on the Reapers’ five-man squad, Knispel will be providing leadership and knowledge of the game to a group of young and rather untested athletes.

“When he’s out there, regardless of the score he’s shooting, he’s a positive person,” Plano coach Scott Smith said.

“He’s taken on that exact leadership role that you’d want from a senior.

He’s helping the younger kids with their swing, course management, what they’re supposed to be doing. He is phenomenal out there just working with everyone.”

Knispel will fill out one of the top two scores for Plano this fall with junior returner Tim Malkosky as well as junior Peyton Gatza, sophomore Kayvon Crenshaw and freshman JJ Dolan.

“Tyler and Tim will be pretty consistent as we go throughout the year,

and then we’re just looking for improvement between Peyton, Kayvon and JJ as we start getting a lot more playing time in throughout the fall and heading towards conference.”

Plano comes off of a 5-12-1 finish to 2015 that included one win in Interstate Eight Conference play. The Reapers kicked off the 2016 season at Edgebrook Golf Course on Tuesday for the Indian Invite hosted by Sandwich and continues play Thursday in Lisle for a triangular with Peotone. Plano returns to Edgebrook on Saturday for the Sandwich Invite at 1 p.m.

“It’s going to be nice just to see how they do getting out there and how they wind up doing against other golfers from schools they aren’t necessarily comfortable with,” Scott said. “You’re playing with the same group all the time and you get very comfortable with what you do and what they do, but the key to golf is to be able to focus on your own game but do that when you’re playing with someone who may be better than you, and how they hold up to 18 holes.”

Despite graduating its top two scoring golfers from a team that made a historic finish at Plano, the girls’ golf team maintains high expectations for the season ahead.

Coach Tammy McGinnis returns four golfers with state experience after Plano placed ninth in the Class A tournament. Senior captain Ashley Martinez is back after an Interstate Eight All-Conference finish as well as juniors Lexi Clark and Shannen Paxton and sophomore Madison Long.

Plano will be tested early, with four scheduled matches in a five-day span, beginning on Aug. 15 with a quad meet at Cedardell against Westmont, Somonauk and Seneca. The Reapers will also face Westmont and West Aurora in dual matches and will enter the Huntley Invite on Thursday.

“I’ve never really had this many meets in one week, and we’ll see how it works out with the weather too,” McGinnis said. “I think the girls are ready to compete. The girls get a lot more inspired. We’re definitely not at our peak, but I don’t want to be at our peak right now. I strongly feel that we

Despite having his playing days in the past, the former dual-threat quarterback used both on Aug. 11 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Kane County Cougars, Harnish was stuck in the passenger seat during pregame traffic and simply got out and ran to the field in time to deliver a strike to a cheering crowd at NIU Night.

“I was incredibly nervous,” Harnish said. “I hadn’t thrown a baseball in years, so I was incredibly nervous walking out there, but it seemed like it went OK. ... I was literally sweating, and I’m not a sweater by nature. I’m out there and I couldn’t even breathe, barely.”

Harnish said he was planning on going with a group of friends to NIU Night and laughed that a couple of friends suggested his name a few weeks ago to the Cougars staff to throw out the first pitch.

There were plenty of fans and well-wishers for Harnish on hand, some congratulating him on a perfect throw as he walked back up to the stands. NIU alum Pam Kluber sat in the front row on the first-base side and smiled as she talked about seeing Harnish play quarterback for the Huskies from 2008 through 2011.

“I just remember him being awesome,” said Kluber, who graduated in 1981. “He’s very approachable. When there’s an approachable athlete, it’s nice. Some of them get on their high horse and forget where they came from, but not him.”

It’s the second or third time Harnish has thrown out a first pitch, he said – however, his hometown Fort Wayne TinCaps had him throw a football instead.

“It’s more my element, so I’m not as nervous,” he said with a laugh. “I think tonight might have been the first
