WCC finds funds for Adult Ed programs PLANO RECORD Waubonsee Community College’s Board of Trustees this week committed to continue offering Adult Education services in fiscal year 2017 – with some adjustments – in spite of the lack of state funding.

Waubonsee’s Adult Education Department – which provides programs such as English as a Second Language, Adult Literacy, Adult Basic Education and GED preparatory classes – is made available to the community, at no cost to students, through state and federal grant programs.

Due to the ongoing state budget standoff, the college has received no state funding for these programs since July 2015, and by statute may not charge tuition. However, as an important driver of economic vitality, the college opted to reallocate funds in order to keep Adult Education running at full capacity through June 2016.

In its commitment to offering these services to the community while also maintaining a balanced budget, Waubonsee will make some adjustments to the current offerings, effective July 1. Those adjustments include offering about 300 sections of Adult Education courses in fiscal 2017, reduced from the approximate 400 sections in fiscal 2016.

As part of this transition, Waubonsee will also focus on maximizing each section offered to ensure all seats are filled. In addition, the division will reorganize. Two full-time, grant-funded positions and two parttime, grant-funded positions that had been vacant will not be renewed once the grant period ends June 30.

In addition, four full-time, grant-funded positions will transition to part-time positions upon the close of the grant year, and two part-time positions currently filled by one employee will not be renewed.

These adjustments come as the college’s Board of Trustees has vowed to continue the high quality tradition of the college while maintaining a balanced budget despite a lack of state funding, which amounts to about $7 million. Due to the budget impasse in Illinois, Waubonsee has not received any state funding in fiscal year 2016 and does not anticipate funding from the state for the upcoming fiscal year.

BRIEFS NHI Club hosting Culver’s dine out day fundraiser today

NHI (National Hispanic Institute) Club at Plano High School will be hosting a Dine Out Day at Culver’s in Yorkville from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. this Thursday, April 28. Culver’s will donate 10 percent of each meal purchase to the NHI Club. These proceeds will help fund each student’s tuition fee for their Summer Leadership programs.

This event will be the final fundraiser for the 2015-16 school year and students are hoping this will push them closer to their goals and minimize the family out-of-pocket expense.

Many of the students will be at Culver’s as volunteers, serving and taking orders. This is a great opportunity for the community to get to know who they are sponsoring and what they are contributing towards.

Middle school’s Leadership Club sponsoring plant sale

The Plano Middle School Leadership Club is sponsoring its fourth annual native plant sale to raise funds for native landscape improvements at the school and to encourage homeowners to incorporate plants that support Illinois wildlife.

Orders will be taken through Monday, May 2, with pickup dates of from 2:40 to 6:30 p.m. May 18 for 17 plant species with earlier growth habits and June 8 for five plant varieties with later growth habits. Pickup is at the District 88 maintenance building, 800 S. Hale St. Plants are sold in 2-inch plant plugs, with good root systems. Woodland shade plants such as Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Shooting Star are $4 each. Sun-loving prairie forbs and grasses like Prairie Blazing Star, Butterfly Weed, Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed are $2 each.

FUNDING ISSUES FOR FVOAS

State owes senior care nonprofit more than $470K, creating problems If you go

SANDWICH – Al Schilling of Sandwich often visits the Fox Valley Older Adult Services community center for bingo and lunch with his wife, and he attends the Men’s’ Breakfast and Fox Valley Carving Club meeting every Tuesday.

During the carving club meeting, Schilling and the other members of the group socialize, share ideas and work on projects. Meeting at the community center has been free in the past, but that could quickly change because the state has not yet passed a budget.

“It’s always been free to come to our meetings, where we talk and help each other with our carvings, but it might have to change soon,” Schilling said.

“We have donated money in the past to the center, but without a state budget, things that used to have no charge may require a fee.”

FVOAS is a nonprofit organization that assists seniors in DeKalb, Kendall, LaSalle and Bureau counties. At its Fox Valley Community Center, more than 1,500 area seniors a year participate in programs and activities.

Seniors can enjoy meals together on weekdays and transportation through a partnership with Voluntary Action Center. The center also has a computer lab, gift shop, library and rooms for meeting space.

Groups, including the Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary clubs, church groups and the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce Leads Group II also meet at the community center. The center’s hall, with a full kitchen and bar, can be rented out for bridal and baby showers, wedding receptions and funeral luncheons.

The state owes FVOAS more than $470,000 for contracted services rendered. FVOAS’ executive director Cindy Worsley said the state has only paid for half of their clients’ services in Adult Day and Home Services.

“The state is cutting services for half our people, making us use all of our reserves and extra money to pay for what the state used to,” Worsley said. “The state is saying that these seniors don’t need help, that instead of having an aide prepare meals, they buy a microwave, that they find their own ride to the doctor, not have an aide, that they have a seat or handle bars in a shower instead of having an aide help them wash.”

people out of nursing homes and from premature and unnecessary placement,” she said. “Since almost all our clients are on Medicaid, the state currently pays about $10,000 per client per year in care programs. If they were sent to a nursing home, the state would pay $55,000.”

FVOAS has been assured through the Illinois Department on Aging that as soon as a budget is passed, the invoiced fees will be paid.

“About 90 percent of the state’s budget has been paid, but the other 10 percent, senior and early childhood care, has not,” Patty Steffens, FVOAS’ business development director, said.

“Those two groups are our past and our future.”

However, because of the budget impasse, DeKalb and Aurora adult day services were closed in October and

there have been staff layoffs. To fundraise, FVOAS has created a Go Fund Me account, www.gofundme.com/ www-fvoas-org.

An upcoming fundraising event, the Spring Gala and Auction, will take place May 14 at the Fox Valley Community Center. Tickets cost $50 and include hors d’eouvres, a dessert buffet, silent and live auctions and live music.

“This is a different kind of fundraising, like an emergency fundraising,” Steffens said. “We have about 130 employees, and about 100 are subsidized through a contract with the state. We constantly worry about making payroll every two weeks. Since we’re focusing on payroll, we’re not focusing on our programs and activities for seniors.”

Steffens said there are at least five programs or activities held at FVOAS daily including bible study, bingo, cards, crafts, line dancing, massages, painting and Wii bowling. Special events, including afternoon matinees and trips to dinners, theaters, museums and sporting events are offered in partnership with the Sandwich Park District.

Jean Mowery of Plano said that before attending events at FVOAS, she didn’t know too many people in the area. Mowery visits FVOAS every day and participates in a number of activities.

“I stop by for lunch and stay for activities every day,” Mowery said. “It’s a good group, everyone is nice and we all get along.”

FORUM Future is bright

To the Editor: On behalf of the Plano High School administration, faculty and staff, I would like to extend a big thank you to the community of Plano for its continued support of academic excellence.

On Thursday, March 31, the second annual Capstone Dinner and Initiation Ceremony was held at Plano High School. This event is an opportunity for students who have been selected for the Capstone program to be honored by and introduced to our community.

This year the Plano Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event. As Capstone Chairperson for the Chamber, Beth Nelson from First Insurance Group worked tirelessly to make sure the dinner event was a huge success. Parents and community members couldn’t say enough about how much they enjoyed the evening.

Since “it takes a village to raise a child,” Beth worked with the community of Plano to secure its support for our students. Thanks to her efforts and the many supporters who were a part of making this night special for our stu-

dents, we were able to have an evening to remember for years to come.

Police thankful for grant

money to make this first purchase.

This unit will be placed in the lobby of the police department, providing an extra lifesaving measure to anyone in the facility. The AED unit is a Zoll brand and will assist officers and staff in utilizing the unit as an automatic defibrillator during medical emergencies. The AED also acts as an electronic coach during CPR. This grant award fully funds the purchase of our new AED as well as the cabinet it will be housed in. The AED was purchased from Second Chance Cardiac Solutions in Yorkville. Second Chance generously donated the cabinet for AED. Donations of this kind help the overall budget in the police department and this is greatly appreciated.

This AED allows records staff and officers the ability to provide efficient service to the citizens of Plano when seconds matter most.

This bipartisan legislation will make it easier for homeowners to make use of private flood insurance policies.

When the federal government overestimates the risk of flooding, private providers can step in with more affordable policies. Furthermore, NFIP only covers up to $250,000 in home damage; it does

not compensate for temporary housing when displaced, nor does it provide for financial losses. However, private insurance is freer than the federal program, and can cover much more.

Acknowledging the private market’s important role, H.R. 2901 allows insurance policyholders to shop around and move between the private and public policies to maintain continuous coverage. If they’re unsatisfied with the private market, they can to return to NFIP insurance.

Expanding options for homeowners and reducing the federal flood insurance footprint is a no-brainer – the full House should act now on this bill.

Here we are at the end of April already. As the poet said, time flies when you’re having fun.

We’re two months into meteorological spring, which started on March 1 and, this year at least, will run until May 31, whereupon Tom Skilling Summer arrives on June 1.

But astronomical spring started with the Spring Equinox on March 20 and will last until the Summer Solstice on June 21. It’s all so confusing!

Forging ahead, however, with each spring comes a new crop of junk mail, which builds up in nooks and crannies of my junk mail vault here (it’s modeled on Uncle Scrooge’s money vault) at the Matile Manse in downtown Troy.

Not that I’m complaining, of course. Were junk mail to disappear, I’d have to do 25 percent more historical research each month in order to write columns. No, I’m happy to see the stuff, even if it sometimes clogs our mailbox. So here are a few things I never would have found out if I hadn’t opened all the mail each and every day the mail carrier showed up out front: The word “apostle” comes from the Greek word apostolos, which means “to send.” Originally, it referred to sending ships or a fleet because, of course, the Apostles were fishers of men.

It takes from 10 to 15 days of drying in the sun to make a sun-dried raisin.

It is illegal to hunt camels in the state of Arizona. Here in Illinois, apparently, you can shoot all the critters you can find wandering in the woods.

Local letters of support filed for Hastert

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Local Kendall County officials were among those who wrote letters of support for former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. The letters were made public late last week in advance of Hastert’s sentencing Wednesday in a federal hush-money case.

The 74-year-old Hastert entered a guilty plea to the charges last October.

Retired Kendall County Sheriff Richard Randall, former Kendall County Board Chairman Anne Vickery and former longtime Kend- Dennis all County Board mem- Hastert ber Nancy Martin were among a group of over 40 people who sent letters of support for Hastert to U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin.

The letters are contained in court documents.

In his letter, Randall, who served as county sheriff from 1986 to 2015, praised Hastert for his public service, while Martin and Vickery asked Judge Durkin for leniency in their letters.

Hastert could receive up to five years in

prison but his attorneys are asking for probation.

Randall, whose letter is dated March 1, 2016, says he has known Hastert since 1968, when Randall had just finished serving with the U.S. Air Nancy Martin Force.

“Words cannot adequately describe my utmost respect for Mr. Hastert (as I have called him Denny) for his sincerity of caring for all people he had represented, the integrity which Anne Vickery he showed and his devotion for duty in his actions,” Randall says in his letter. “I have been blessed to have known and worked with this professional, devoted and courteous man. Along with being a friend, and colleague I consider J. Dennis Hastert a fine example of a public servant.”

Vickery’s letter is dated April 22, 2016, about a week after court documents showed evidence that Hastert had sexually abused five students while he was a coach and teacher at Yorkville High School from 1965 to 1981.

State says miscalculation led it to overpay local governments; D-88 must give back $124,498

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Local governments in Kendall County were collectively overpaid $626,000 from the Illinois Personal Property Replacement Tax due to a misallocation error, the state announced this week.

Of about 6,500 districts statewide affected by the misallocation, the overpayment amounted to less than $10,000 for 5,291 of them. But for 10 agencies the overpayment totaled $1 million or more, according to a news release from the state’s Department of Financial & Professional Regulation.

The overpayment occurred following a change to tax form IL-1000 and revisions to forms IL-1065 and IL-1120-ST, which caused calculation errors, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue. A recent tax system modernization initiative at the Department of Revenue designed to enhance accuracy and efficiency uncovered the misallocation errors, which started in 2014.

The error resulted in overpayment of an estimated $168 million statewide to taxing districts that receive Personal Property Replacement Tax, which is money collected by the state and paid to local governments. The money replaces funds lost by taxing entities when their ability to impose personal

property taxes on corporations, partnerships and other business entities was abolished in the 1970 state constitution.

In Kendall County, the largest overpayments were directed to the following agencies: • School District 308 – $236,302 • Plano School District 88 – $124,498 • Kendall County – $70,774 • Yorkville School District 115 – $54,994 • Oswego Township Road and Bridge – $20,330 • Oswegoland Park District – $13,216 • Little Rock Township Road and Bridge – $11,547 • Newark Community High School District 18 – $10,837 • Little Rock Township – $8,693 • Newark Elementary School District 66 – $8,617 • City of Plano – $7,401 Ali Meant, assistant superintendent for business services and operations for School District 308, said paying back the $236,000 will have an impact on the district’s budget.

“But I guess we don’t have a choice at this point. I’d rather not give the money back,” he said.

“They’ve already prorated our general state aid for the last four or five years and we’ve already not received $21 million based on the proration, so why not just credit that amount?”

Meant said he hasn’t heard how the state plans to recoup the funds. He heard that Springfield may ask them to pay it back over a few years or could take it out of revenue they owe the district.

A man who alleges he was sexually abused by former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert decades ago and was later promised $3.5 million to stay quiet has filed a federal lawsuit saying he’s only been paid about half the money, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The person known as “Individual A” in court documents filed the lawsuit Monday in Yorkville, where Hastert allegedly abused several boys while he was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School, according to the AP report.

In the lawsuit, “Individual A” says he’s owed $1.8 million under the agreement. Individual A says he’s suffered panic attacks that led to bouts of depression, hospitalization and unemployment, the AP quotes the man as saying in the lawsuit.

A federal judge in Chicago sentenced Hastert to 15 months in prison Wednesday on charges of breaking federal banking rules in a scheme to cover up sexual abuse. He also must undergo sex offender treatment and pay a $250,000 fine to a crime victims’ fund, the AP reported.

obviously we’re going to have less revenue,” he said. “If they adjust this amount from next year’s revenues then next year we will have less than what we were expecting.”

County Treasurer Jill Ferko said she hasn’t heard much from the state on overpayment.

“We will have to sit back and wait,” she said. “I have gotten very little information, just the fact that we owe them about $70,000.”

As far as how it will affect the county’s budget, Ferko noted that the county board has dealt with budget issues over the years.

According to Ferko the county gets about $400,000 annually from the Personal Property Replacement Tax. “We’ve had struggles trying to get a balanced budget so every time we take a hit like this of course it’s going to hurt, you don’t want to take too many of this but we should be OK,” she said.

Ferko added that while the state doesn’t even have a budget, it is asking the district to pay this back.

“I struggle with the fact that it is coming up to a year and they haven’t been able to figure things out, and the rest of us don’t run like that,” she said. “The school districts, the

municipalities, the counties, we’re all doing what we are supposed to be doing.”

Dean Romano, assistant superintendent of finance and operations for Yorkville School District 115, shares Ferko’s frustration.

“There are quite a few school districts that are in the million-plus range,” Romano said. “For us obviously $55,000 is something that is noticeable but it is a very small portion of our overall budget. I don’t know how they’re going to correct it.”

He added the state owes the Yorkville School District about $1.19 million in categorical payments, which funds things like student transportation.

“I can tell you they owe us more than we owe them,” Romano said.

“It’s something that we will have to take note of as we plan the budget – it’s hard for me to say that $50,000 is insignificant. It’s something that we will take into account.”

The school district has an annual budget of about $77 million budget and of that about $450,000 comes from the Personal Property Replacement Tax. “It’s one more stressor that we’ll have on our budget as we prepare for determining what resources are going to be available as we come into the new school year,” Romano said.

Sheriff receives donation for training from local law firm

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Sheriff Dwight Baird warned the Kendall County Board at their April 19 meeting that his budget might be over $2,000 but it would be for a good reason.

“If we’re $2,000 over in the budget you’ll know why,” Baird said.

The reason for the possible overage is that Rick Law, Kendall County’s public guardian and public administrator, recently made a $2,000 donation to the sheriff to help fund the training of Deputy Wayne Dial to the role of senior services deputy within the office’s community policing unit.

Law, who was recently appointed to his volunteer position by Gov. Bruce Rauner, is a private attorney and Yorkville resident who serves seniors and their families.

“This is something that we wanted to get behind and support,” Law told the board.

Baird said this is a new program but his office didn’t have to add any officers, they just created the position.

“We really feel it is important to protect our seniors,” Baird said. “This $2,000 is very beneficial to the sheriff’s

office and I really want to thank Rick Law.” Law explained the role his dual appointment of guardian and administrator serves.

“A public guardian is the guardian of last resort which really sounds like a bad place to be – to have the guardian of last resort making decisions for your life. What that means is that you have no honest and reliable family members to make decisions for you,” he said. “In fact, unRick Law fortunately, many times the family members are the poachers and abusers of the senior citizens that are most often being protected.”

Law explained that a judge assigns the public guardian when a senior no longer has the capacity and somebody needs to care for their legal matters. He added that he is a quasi-public official authorized under state law but does not get paid.

If a person has no assets, they are referred to a state department of guardianship, and the public administrator steps in when there is an “unattended death” in Kendall County, Law said.

PHS seniors honored PLANO RECORD Thirty-two Plano High School seniors were recognized at a reception to honor their “4 or More” college/university applications. “4 or More” is an initiative started by the College Board to give students more college admissions options and to encourage all seniors to apply to at least four colleges.

Students were to apply to at least one ¯¯≤¯safety college where their admission credentials exceeded those of the most recently admitted freshman class, two good college fits where admission credentials are equivalent to those of the most recently admitted freshman class, and at least one reach college where the average admission criteria exceeds the student’s admission credentials.

The students were also gifted a membership through August to the Fox Valley YMCA with YMCA representatives Stephanie Wayne, senior operations director, and April Hix, fit-

ness director, presenting certificates of membership to the seniors.

Dr. Hector Garcia, District 88 superintendent, also had an opportunity to speak with these seniors about how they can help other students understand the importance of having these options for their college careers.

State funding stalemate at issue; Illinois owes college about $7 million PLANO RECORD Waubonsee Community College’s Board of Trustees this week approved adjustments to the way services are offered to small business owners.

Due to the ongoing state budget standoff, the Small Business Development Center will close on June 30. One full-time employee will become part of Waubonsee’s Workforce Development Division and will continue to offer workshops on a fee-for-services basis to small business owners.

One part-time grant-funded position will not be renewed due to the loss of grant funds.

“The Board of Trustees is committed to continuing to provide the SBDC’s award-winning services to the small business owners throughout our district,” Waubonsee President Dr. Christine Sobek said. “However, with a lack of funding in 2016 and no funding anticipated for fiscal year 2017, we needed to restructure how services are provided.”

These changes come as part of the college’s Board of Trustees’ commitment to continue to provide high qual-

ity, state-of-the-art learning experiences and keep a balanced budget in spite of ongoing lack of state funding, which amounts to approximately $7 million. Due to the budget impasse in Illinois, Waubonsee has not received any state funding since the fiscal year started on July 1, 2015.

The college previously committed funds to keep the SBDC program up and running through June 2016.

In other cost-saving measures, Waubonsee reduced spending on travel, delayed filling vacant positions and the purchase of equipment, while also passing a small tuition increase for next fiscal year.

The SBDC was established through a partnership between the college, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to provide management, marketing and financial coaching to small business owners and prospective small business owners.

Last year, approximately 400 small business owners received services through the program.

“While we are disappointed to have not received the grant to keep the SBDC running in its current form, we look forward to continuing these important services for our vibrant small business community as an integral part of our Workforce Development offerings,” Sobek said.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS DUI arrest on Rt. 71 County sheriff’s deputies arrested Hilario Gonzalez-Pillado, 30, of the 700 block of Grove Street, Aurora, after he was found sleeping in his vehicle while it was parked and still running along Route 71 near Chicago Road in Fox Township at 1:28 a.m. April 25.

The Plano girls soccer team snapped a seven-game losing streak with the 7-1 non-conference win 7-1 over DePue on Monday. The Reapers are now 3-9-1 entering this week of games against Coal City and Herscher.

Plano went scoreless in the last three games, so seven goals was a huge plus for the Reapers, who saw Arieanna Accidentale and Gema Tinoco score twice against DePue. The other goals were from Taylor Jones and Estefany Valles.

“It was nice to find the back of the net and put some shots on frame. The girls needed some confidence after coming off of a few tough games last week,” Plano coach Valerie Pelizza said. “They were working on possessing the ball and switching the fields, and it was really nice to see them applying some of the things we have been

talking about and practicing.”

Prior to DePue, Peotone won, 4-0, last Thursday. The game was called with 30 minutes left in the second half due to the weather. The Reapers were 1-4 in the Interstate Eight Conference after this contest.

“It is very unfortunate, as I believe the girls came out after our halftime talk with a sense of urgency,” Pelizza said. “We had more offensive opportunities than we have had in our past few games. Peotone has a very wide field, and the girls were using it to their advantage.”

On April 19, Manteno won, 5-0. Plano junior goalkeeper Giselle Melendez posted 15 saves. “[This] was a tough game. The girls played hard, but we could not create any offensive opportunities for ourselves,” Pelizza said. “We have been working on communicating and challenging every ball, and I saw some of that.”

Reapers knock out four wins

In the span of less than a week, the Plano softball team increased its win total from two to six.

After a win over Newark and a twogame sweep of Indian Creek, the Reapers won a 6-5 decision in eight innings Monday against Lisle for the Reapers’ first Interstate Eight Conference win of the season.

The 5-2 win over Newark snapped an eight-game losing streak, and the Reapers were 6-10 overall and 1-6 in the league after the Lisle game.

“We were able to get past that bump in the road,” Plano coach Dwayne Love said. “The girls are really starting to come together. They are all doing their

part and we are starting to gel as a team.”

Against Lisle with the game tied 5-5 after seven innings, Belle Salas hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth.

“Belle was down 0-2 in the count, but she said she saw it coming,” Love said of the home run pitch. “I knew it too, and for me, this was a great moment for the team. To get this win was huge.”

The Lions led by as much as 5-0 going into the bottom of the fifth before the Reapers scored twice in the bottom of the inning and three times in the seventh. Pitcher Shannon Tierney earned the win with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

At the plate, she had three hits and three RBIs and Josi Gonzalez added two hits for Plano.

Lisle, the Reapers (9-11, 1-7) scored their lone run in the game in the top of the first, when Ward’s sacrifice fly allowed leadoff man Levi Campbell to score.

After that, Lisle scored in every inning – two in the bot-

tom of the first, once in the second, four times in the third, three more in the fourth and the one in the fifth that allowed the game to end early. Plano only managed one hit after the first inning – a single from Christian Amezquita in the

second inning. “[Lisle] hit with runners in scoring position, just like they did [in Game 1],” Parpet said.

“We haven’t done that. We haven’t done a very good job of that, and they did.”

Hoping to redeem itself after Monday’s loss to Lisle by 15 runs, the Plano baseball team was ready to take another shot at the Lions on Tuesday.

Instead, the Lions defeated the Reapers again – this time by a final of 11-1 in five innings in Lisle to sweep the two-game Interstate Eight Conference series.

“We weren’t very determined,” Plano coach John Parpet said. “We went cold, and it showed. We just didn’t have a very good, competitive effort.

We expect more from our guys, and we just need to get better.”

“We just didn’t come out strong today at all,” Plano junior Tyler Ward added. “It was tough to get anything going.”

He ended up giving up 12 hits while striking out seven batters – including three in the third inning.

“We throw strikes – that’s one thing we definitely do,” Parpet said. “We know people are going to put the ball into play against us. We just need to make the plays behind [our pitchers].”

In the first game of the series, Lisle won, 20-5, in five innings Monday. The Lions outhit the Reapers 14-6. Plano was led by Ward’s two home runs that resulted in three RBIs. Notes: Prior to the Lisle series, Plano won both games of the doubleheader against Indian Creek, 1-0, in Game 1 and 9-0 in Game 2. On Friday, the Reapers fell to Peotone, 5-3.

On April 20, Plano defeated Newark, 9-7. The Reapers led 9-0 before the Norsemen scored all seven of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Will Benson posted three RBIs and Ricky Bruns added two RBIs.

Tommy Brown, Jeremiah Murff win events; depth ensures Plano victory

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Plano boys’ track and field team made the most of the beautiful weather conditions Saturday to run away with a first-place finish at the annual Track and Field of Dreams Invite at Reaper Stadium.

Despite winning just two field events and two relays, Plano showed its team depth to score 135 points, well ahead of runner-up Lisle (88) and Aurora Central Catholic (82) to round out the top three in the 11-team field.

“We were able to kind of run away with it, which was nice. We had a little bit of a handoff issue with our 4x200 and didn’t get any points, which I thought was going to be pretty crucial, but the boys really stepped up to the challenge after that and responded to the adversity,” Plano coach Rob Wegley said. “We took home a lot of second places and a lot of thirds.”

Tommy Brown won the shot put with a mark of 497¼ and added additional points with his third-place finish in the discus event (122-9). Jeremiah Murff also had a big day for Plano, winning the triple jump with a distance of 41-4 in addition to a runner-up finish in the 200 with a time of 23.34 seconds.

Murff was also part of the winning 4x100-meter relay team with Mauricio Perez, Michael Marshall and Davion Cole, which clocked in a time of 44.51 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay ended the day with a first-place time of 3:31.55 behind the efforts of Cole, Sebastian Esparza, Marshall and Ryan Jernigan.

“We had a few guys really step up to the challenge and make up those points,” Wegley said. “We’re lucky because we have depth. While we don’t always take home that top prize, we’re going to make up six or eight points in every single race because we have more athletic kids than a lot of other schools have.”

Perez was second in the 100 (11.58) and second in the long jump (20-6). Marshall was second in the 400 (51.35) while Jernigan took third in the 800 (2:05). Andrew Basden placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.29 and cleared 10-0 in the pole vault to place second.

The Plano girls’ roster was limited last Saturday, and although the Reapers were unable to put any relays to the starting line, the individuals highlighted the day. Lindsay Hoalt placed fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.65) and fourth in the 200 (27.95) and finished sixth in the 400 (1:06).

Allison Smith placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.9), ninth in the 300 hurdles (56.1) and cleared 4-6 to take third in the high jump.

“We have some injuries and girls who had other commitments,” Wegley said. “We didn’t even have enough to put together a relay, but I approached the girls with the situation and no one complained. They stepped up and responded well. Lindsay Hoalt has been working really hard and has turned into our best 200 runner, sitting second in our sectional right now. She’s really determined to get downstate.”

Plano now shifts its focus to the practice track before traveling to Seneca for the Interstate Eight Conference meet on May 5.
