Gov. urges change for Illinois

mschury@shawmedia.com Gov. Bruce Rauner spoke to a crowd of supporters Saturday morning at a breakfast sponsored by the Kendall County Republican Central Committee at the Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville.

The audience included Kendall County area GOP lawmakers State Sen. Sue Rezin and State Rep. John Anthony, both of Morris, and State Rep. Keith Wheeler of Oswego.

Rauner arrived by motorcycle, wearing a leather biker jacket decorated with pins.

“I’m sorry I’m not dressed for a country club,” he said.

Rauner explained he was riding with the Illinois Patriot Guard organization after naming a highway in Kane County for a member of the military who was killed in Afghanistan.

As the state budget impasse continues, Rauner blamed Democrats and the “Chicago Madigan political machine for the state of Illinois.”

“People think we are fighting about the budget and we are, the budget is important, but what we’re really fighting about is the future of Illinois,” Rauner said. “The question is are we going to stay on the track that the Democrats have put us on for years – job losses, lower family income, higher taxes, higher costs of living, low economic growth?”

Rauner went on to say that “the system is broken” in Springfield.

He also touched on labor relations.

“We have the highest-paid state employees in America and I said, look, that’s OK but we need to be paid on productivity and not seniority,” he said.

He added that his administration was creating a new nonprofit partnership and he will recruit executives

“We will have a not-for-profit, run by the business community and we are going to have superstars in it,” he said.

Noting that there are about 7,000 units of local government in the state, Rauner spoke of reducing that number.

He said the state could save billions of dollars doing away with many of these agencies.

“And most of these units of government have taxing authority, pensions, cronyism patronage, high salaries and it’s somebody’s turf – it’s somebody’s sandbox where they can run their political empire,” Rauner said. “We got to shrink that down.”

He continued that he wanted “local control of government costs” and wanted local governments to be able to modify things as they see fit.

Suspicious item in Plano turns out to be geocache PLANO RECORD A suspicious device that at first appeared to be a pipe bomb placed in the 200 block of Mitchell Drive in Plano on April 12 was later determined by police to be part of a geocache game, according to Plano police.

Police said participants in the game attempt to locate items based on GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates.

The incident began when Plano, Yorkville and Kendall County sheriff’s

deputies responded to Mitchell Drive in the Lakewood Springs subdivision on a report of a suspicious person placing an unknown item under a lamp post in the parking lot of a day care center on Mitchell Drive.

The complainant provided police with the license plate number of a potential suspect. Police said they were able to locate the person, who explained that the device was part of a game.

Police said the device was removed from the lamp post after it was determined it was not a threat.

“The governments of Will County, Kane County, Kendall County – everywhere in the state – it’s your government, it’s your county, it’s your city, it’s your school district – you decide what gets collectively bargained and how much prevailing wage is.”

City officers set to get wage increases over 1-year period

a holiday will be time-and-one-half for all hours actually worked on the holiday, plus the employee’s regular holiday pay of eight hours regular time.

Each officer also will receive one floating holiday off with pay during the year.

The officers also are entitled to longevity pay. After five years on the job they will receive $500 every year plus $75 for each consecutive year of service. The longevity benefits will be paid each December.

After 30 days on the job they will receive a paid group term life insurance policy up to $50,000 with the option to purchase more if desired.

Uniforms and equipment will be supplied by the city for them as needed at no charge.

The city will provide health, dental and vision insurance with the employee paying 5 percent of the premium for an HMO or 10 percent of the premium for a PPO, whichever the employee wants.

The city will pay up to 50 percent of the cost of health and hospital insurance for retirees with 20 or more years of service, 37 percent for 15-20 years of service, and 25 percent for 10-15 years of service.

Patrolmen with an associate degree

in a curriculum related to their job will receive an additional $750 each year and those with a bachelor’s degree will receive an additional $1,500 each year.

Employees will be reimbursed for educational expenses including tuition, fees and books if the course is deemed essential to their job or toward a degree related to the job, up to six credits per semester. They must maintain a grade of “C” or better grade and the fees cannot be more than those established for Northern Illinois University.

Alderman Bob Jones said he has been on the council for several years and noted that this was the first time in his time on the council that the city did not have to hire outside counsel to represent them.

Resident requests additional bids

In other Plano City Council news, a resident requested that the city get additional bids for an upcoming job on City Well No. 9.

Matt Jackson, a Plano resident, told city council members April 11 that he noticed a recommendation to approve a proposal from Artlip & Sons Mechanical of Aurora on the agenda.

Residents unhappy with parks, want improvements Also question meeting schedule of committee

news@kendallcountynow.com Two residents told Plano City Council members April 11 that they are unhappy with the city’s parks and would like to see improvements made.

Shelia Cockriel said she is a member of a group that is focusing on parks to see what parents and kids want in their community.

Cockriel said she tried to contact Alderman Melody Herreid, Parks Com-

mittee chairman, but has not been able to reach her.

She was told that the date for the next Park Committee meeting has not been set.

When she asked who other committee members were, Mayor Bob Hausler said this was citizens’ comment time so he could not answer her questions until after the meeting.

Cockriel said a high school student told her he would like to see Plano set up a recreation program between the city’s three parks so they could have organized summer sports programs that could be run by volunteers.

When she asked how the funding for park works, Hausler again told her this

was not the time for questions, adding that he would answer them after the meeting.

One resident said she was passionate about splash pads that she heard might be developed this year. She offered to help in the building of them however she could.

Steve Kapas, a frequent meeting attendee and speaker about “Making Plano Great Again,” said he received a photo of damaged children’s play equipment at the park behind the police station. He noted that there is $700,000 in taxpayers’ money in the park budget that could be used to repair the damaged swing and other play equipment.

He said many people come to the meetings hoping they can leave with answers to their questions.

Kapas said he would like to have a time on when improvements will be made, what the park funds will be used for and when the next Park Committee meeting will be held. He noted that only two have been held this year – Feb. 1 and Feb. 18.

He said he could not find a timeline on when maintenance will be done in the parks and when improvements will be made.

Plano’s police patrol officers and sergeants will receive a wage increase for the period of May 1, 2016, through April 30, 2017.

Council members approved a oneyear contract with both groups April 11 through their agreement worked out with the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council, which represented the officers.

The department has four sergeants with time ranging from 17 years to four years. Their salary scale goes from $68,822 for a new sergeant up to $86,100 for one with eight years on the job.

As of May 1, the range for these same groups increases 2 percent, going from $70,198 to $87,823. And as of Dec. 1, the range for these same groups will increase 1 percent, going from $70,900 to $88,701.

The department also has 13 patrol officers with time on the job ranging from 23 years to one and a half years.

According to the contract the starting pay for patrol officers will be $53,022, up 2 percent from the present $51,983. And on Dec. 1 it will increase 1 percent, going to $53,552.

Patrolmen with 15 months on the job will receive $56,119 now, $57,242 on May 1 and $57,814 on Dec. 1.

Patrolmen with two years of service will receive for the above dates $60,256, $61,461, and $62,076.

With three years experience they will go from $64,379 to $65,667 and to $66,323.

And patrolmen with four years or more on the job will receive $68,529, $69,900, and $70,599.

A patrolman assigned to perform detective duties will receive an additional $100 per month.

All the officers will receive 12 paid holidays each year: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Presidents Day, Spring Day or the Friday before Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Tragedy for Hastert’s victims, their families

Next Wednesday, April 27, former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is scheduled to be sentenced in a federal courtroom in Chicago for violating banking laws in an aborted attempt to buy the continued silence of a person prosecutors have called “Individual A” at a cost of $3.5 million.

Individual A is one of at least four members of the Yorkville High School wrestling team that prosecutors say were sexually abused by Hastert when he taught and coached at YHS from 1965 to 1981.

Prosecutors have said they would have preferred to have filed sexual abuse charges against the 74-year-old Hastert but the statute of limitations on those potential charges ran out years ago.

Hastert, a Plano area resident, had kept a low profile since retiring from Congress in 2007. He would occasionally be seen picking up the mail at the Yorkville post office or doing other errands, but made few public appearances. When federal prosecutors filed the banking charges against him last May, his many local friends and long-

time supporters were left stunned and saddened.

The allegations that Hastert sexually abused at least four YHS student wrestlers during his years at the school – as detailed in the prosecutors’ court filings over the past several weeks – are outrageous and truly tragic for those who he victimized. Hastert’s own attorneys have said their client “acknowledges that as a young man he committed transgressions for which he is profoundly sorry.”

Our sympathies are with Hastert’s victims and their families.

As a successful politician for nearly three decades, Hastert appeared to embody much of what was good about public service and government. He worked effectively and seemingly with a high degree of integrity in Springfield and Washington to build consensus among his fellow lawmakers to improve the lives of the people and the communities he served. Little did we realize that as Hastert went about his work in the General Assembly and then in Congress that he harbored some very dark and tragic secrets.

To the Editor: While it is true that Dennis Hastert has experienced shame and humiliation for a short period of time, the young men who are coming forward to tell their stories have experienced shame, humiliation and a severe breach of trust for 40 years.

I, personally, would like to commend you for the enormous courage it takes to speak publicly and directly to the person who is the source of your abuse.

As parents we teach our children to go to the safe people in their lives if anyone hurts them. Their clergy, their teachers, and their coaches. But where do these children go when one of these trusted adults is the one who is violating their trust. The children will suffer in silence, for who would believe them?

Today you are believed, we are listening and we are supporting you. Thank you for your courage.

To the Editor: Now that the all ballots have been counted, and the primary election results are certified for Kendall County Board District 2, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to those citizens who voted for me, as well as those supporters who helped in numerous ways to help place me on the ballot in the general election for the county board.

I spoke with and received emails from many citizens expressing frustration with every facet of taxing bodies placing them in positions of setting time lines to exit the county due to Kendall County being No. 1 highest property taxes of the 102 counties in Illinois, and with elected officials continuing to raise all our taxes, it is becoming unaffordable to live here. I agree, and felt the need to do something about this problem.

Kendall County citizens’ wants and needs are one and the same: tax relief.

The Mayas and the Aztecs were the first to use the stuff as chewing gum, but it failed to pique anyone’s interest here in the U.S. until Santa Anna took his stroll along the beach just after the Civil War. Young Thomas Adams, who was working as the secretary for Mexico’s former Napoleon wanna-be, freGen. Antonio quently saw the former dictator walking and Lopez de chewing chicle at the Santa Anna same time, and decided chicle might be a money-maker.

Adams ordered 5,000 pounds of the stuff and invented a machine that produced chicle in long, thin strips, notched every few inches so that store owners could break off lengths for sale. Adams marketed his product under the Adams New York Gum label.

John Colgan, a druggist in Louisville, Kentucky, found Adams’ gum interesting but tasteless, so he added tolu balsam – a pleasant flavoring obtained from yet another Central American tree – to chicle, selling the product under his own Taffy-Tolu label.

Enter William Wrigley Jr. Wrigley, born in 1861, was expelled from school in Philadelphia at the age of 12, and ran away from home to sell newspapers on the streets of New York.

He later earned $1.50 a week working in his father’s soap factory, moving up to become a traveling soap

salesman. He soon established himself as one of the premier “drummers” in the nation.

At age 31, after sampling Colgan’s Taffy-Tolu, the super soap salesman decided this new take on Adams’ chewing gum was the wave of the future, and figured a fortune could be made with the product.

The first gum manufacturer Wrigley visited had the nerve to keep him waiting more than 10 minutes. A stickler for promptness, Wrigley stomped over to the office of a more prompt businessman with whom he deigned to work.

The former soap sales genius quickly William transferred his knowWrigley Jr. how to selling gum.

When he began making his own chewing gum, he named his first product “Lotta,” as in “Lotta value for your money” (he was apparently less a stickler for grammar than promptness).

Within 40 years, Wrigley’s firm produced and sold more than 113 billion sticks of gum, and earned more than $185 million for his firm’s stockholders.

Wrigley was never a shy fellow, and his growing fortune allowed him to enjoy life as he saw it. He always bought bright red autos, claiming, with some justification, they were easier to find. He bragged he could sell anything to anyone (which he probably could), boasting to the press he could sell pianos to armless men in Borneo if need be.

His was an ego definitely Donald Trump-sized. In 1902, to inspire his legions of gum salesmen throughout the U.S., Wrigley sent each of them – all 12,000 – hand-autographed photos

of himself.

And the thing is, he was a sales genius. He shipped free packets of his gum to every person listed in phone books in the U.S. Twice. He even had the Mother Goose tales rewritten so the stories included chewing gum.

Then he had 14 million copies printed and distributed them all over the country.

Best of all from his perspective, it all worked. Per capita consumption of chewing gum increased from 39 sticks a person in 1914 to 130 by 1947.

In 1925, William turned management of his gum empire over to his son, P.K. Wrigley, who, with his son, continued his father’s promotional tactics to the great benefit of the company.

For instance, when World War II broke out, the Wrigley company had a huge stockpile of aluminum used to make gum wrappers. But P.K., with an appropriate public relations blitz, turned all of the strategically important metal over to the government, and in return Uncle Sam made sure Wrigley got a lucrative contract to package military rations. Of course, a pack of gum went with virtually every ration package, helping Wrigley reach a relatively captive audience.

All of which goes to show that everything – even chewing gum – has a history. And it also goes to show that people usually make history, and not the other way around.

If Charles Adams hadn’t spied Gen. Santa Anna pensively chewing chicle on that Staten Island beach back in 1868, the world would have had neither Wrigley Spearmint Gum, nor Adams’ Chiclets to chew on.

Being a retiree, I have the time to represent all citizens at board and committee meetings. Since this elected position is a part-time job – tax relief begins with me – I absolutely will not participate in the pension plan, medical plan or dental plan, an immediate cost savings for taxpayers for a total of $10,000. Nor will I have taxpayers reimburse my mileage to attend meetings within the county.

I am not aware of any employer who reimburses employee mileage to/from their place of employment whether full or part-time employees.

Again – thank you so much and hope you again consider voting for me in the

general election on Nov. 8, and I look forward to hearing more about your concerns and cost-saving suggestions in order to be able to remain in the community we enjoy living in.

Look at Metra alternatives

To the Editor: Last week’s letter from Judy Gilmour pointed out a number of very important facts about the Metra extension. The biggest one was the overall cost to serve so few.

The mayors of Yorkville and Plano are very much in favor of such a plan, it

appears that they are only looking at one path, the extension of Metra, which is a very costly amount and time consuming prospect. Rather than extend Metra, which the Metra organization as a whole is also not in favor of, I believe that we should look at other options that are more cost effective.

Use Kendall Area Transit (KAT) to transfer passengers from Plano, Yorkville, Oswego to the Aurora train station. This route would allow for easy additions of routes as they become more popular and also promote additional local employment. This could be completed for much less than what they plan to spend on a basic study. Oh, by the way this was offered in Oswego, and they canceled the

service due to low ridership.

In Plainfield, the Pace Bus system provides direct dropoff at the medical campus, financial district, as well as North Michigan Avenue. The bus system runs on a very predictable time table, and also has the ability to add and move routes as needed to meet customer demand. Having a Pace stop in Kendall County would require some additional work, though it is feasible, or better yet utilizing the KAT system to provide direct transport.

One alternative that a lot of individuals have overlooked is that we in Kendall County are very fortunate to have an Amtrak station. Amtrak ridership is building • Continued on page 6

Back in 1995, the William Wrigley Jr. Company opened a chewing gum factory on property they had owned in Yorkville for several years. And I don’t know if you saw the news or not a couple years ago when the company announced they were expanding their Yorkville operation.

For years, Wrigley manufactured several chewing gum brands in Yorkville. But then in 2014, the company announced the exciting news that they were going to start making Skittles right here in Kendall County.

Exciting, that is, if you like Skittles, which I can take or leave, although mostly leave. Juicy Fruit and Double Mint gum are both OK, but I have never really been a fan of fruit-flavored candy.

But back to chewing gum, which has been popular – almost an obsession – in the U.S. since the late 1860s. And the story of that obsession here in the U.S. begins with one of the arch-villains of yesteryear, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the guy that rubbed out Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett at the Alamo back in 1836.

The former Mexican dictator and below-average, though over-achieving, general had been deposed for years before he decided to vacation on New York’s Staten Island in 1868. Being a haven for the world’s bad guys is sort of U.S. tradition.

Ferdinand Marcos (the kleptomaniac who ran the Philippines), and the Shah of Iran both went there after their own people kicked them out.

Even so, Santa Anna ambling around Staten Island still seems seriously odd to me.

But anyway, as he strolled along the beach, Mexico’s former maximum leader was spied breaking off pieces of chicle and chewing it.

in the area as Amtrak is working to make Mendota a regional hub; with this said, has anyone looked at realigning the Carl Sandburg route that runs from Quincy to Chicago to better serve morning and evening commuters? This route is partially funded by state funds. This appears to be the best alternative, in addition this would only need to make about an hour time change in the departure time in the morning to make it work.

Lastly I would like to see the KAT system operate a dedicated route that picks up at designated stops within the county, two or three times during the day. This would allow individuals that do not drive and also teens a way to get to and from shopping centers within area.

This could be completed by making a circle route where they go from Oswego, to down around Caton Farm road in the southeast to Lisbon, Newark, Plano, Yorkville.

I believe that these suggestions would provide more services to a larger number of people, and be more cost effective. If the politicians think that they are going to get five to six trains a day into the community with Metra, they are wrong.

Rather than look at the issue one way, let’s take a look at alternatives that might better serve the entire community.

To the Editor: This week we see how political parties are looking at a situation. First is our representative in Congress, Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, praising the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) conference held in Washington, D.C., this weekend. A meeting of hundreds of students and professionals showing off the latest in science ingenuity. Our best and brightest on display.

Mr. Hultgren is a co-chair for the STEM education caucus, whose job it is to encourage students to strive for jobs in these fields. In the past, people who worked as engineers, IT professionals, mathematicians and scientists were held in high esteem and were paid well.

But let’s travel upstate a bit to Lake Bluff and an Illinois company, Abbott Labs, who is firing 150 IT professionals and outsourcing these well-paid positions to India to take advantage of lower wages.

Our senator, Dick Durbin, a Democrat, has said this is not acceptable and has called Abbott Labs out for this act.

What does this tell our young aspiring STEM students? Work hard, achieve your dream and when you become employed we will ship your job off overseas to save a few dollars. This is not only disheartening but it is encouraged by current tax laws.

We need to redefine what constitutes an American company and how we tax them. If companies like Mondelez, the makers of Oreo cookies, wants to start manufacturing in Mexico instead of Chicago, then we tax them higher. Ford Motor moves a plant to Mexico. Tesla is looking at facilities in China. iPhones are being cranked out by the millions in China.

What is Rep. Hultgren doing besides eyeballing the presentations at the STEM conference? We need leadership that does more than pay lip service to say to our children that we need more STEM students and we will preserve jobs created here so they stay here.

The other day a poll was taken asking people would they support Americanmade products? Yeah, they said, as long as they were cheaper than those coming from China. That’s a sad testament.

Jackson, who owns the same type of business, said he had not heard of any request for bids on this work.

He said Artlip is a fine sheet metal shop but it is located in Kane County and Aurora.

“I know of three union mechanical contractors in Kendall County, including me. I have six employees, four of whom live in Plano,” he said.

Jackson said he has asked multiple times how he can get work in Plano but nothing was ever sent to him.

“There should be multiple bids for this contract which is more than $6,000. I would like to have someone tell me how I can get Plano work.”

When a motion came before the council to accept the Artlip proposal, John McGinnis, public works director, said he was not sure what the council

wanted to do with this item because of Jackson’s comments.

“I’d like to table it and get additional bids,” Mayor Bob Hausler said.

McGinnis said he did not ask for bids on this work but brought the contractor to the scene to see if he could match what was installed at one of the other well sites. He indicated it might be a problem to ask for bids now because Artlip’s proposal had been made public.

City Attorney Tom Grant said the council had a choice of tabling the issue or voting it up or down.

When two aldermen said it should be tabled, Grant said this was a sufficient number to table the issue.

When asked what his timetable was for installing the new dampers, McGinnis said it would take about a month to get the items, so he could go an additional month for the bidding process.

Aldermen said he should be sure the bid proposal asks for equipment identical to what Artlip had proposed installing.

No date was set for McGinnis to bring his bid proposal to the council.

He added that there has been talk of a handicapped accessible park but no one is saying when it might become reality. Also, security cameras should be installed wherever possible in the parks, he said.

“And lastly people would like to have a little culture in the evenings with a movie in the park or music in the parks,” he noted.

“Could we have him show up for one meeting a month and maybe for a Park Committee meeting?” he asked.

When Hausler asked for committee reports, Alderman Bob Jones, a member of the Parks Committee, said he had nothing to report and did not know of any meetings being planned.

Hausler said he could schedule a meeting as a committee member so he named two dates from which Herreid could choose. They were 6 p.m. April 19 and 6 p.m. April 21.

Hausler said he had contacted the Sandwich Park District to talk to them about a splash pad they have built.

Jones said the Parks Committee is planning to build a splash pad this year along with an adult park across the street.

Hausler said the city has $200,000 set aside for improvements to Foley Park, but it will be matched with a $200,000 state grant, and it is unknown when state funds might be available.

The Plano Middle School Leadership Club is sponsoring its fourth annual native plant sale to raise funds for native landscape improvements at the school and to encourage homeowners to incorporate plants that support Illinois wildlife.

County OKs highway projects

mschury@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board unanimously approved a laundry list of highway construction projects Tuesday morning worth just over $2.6 million and intended to spruce up 12 county and township highways.

Funds for the work will come from the county’s state-reimbursed motor fuel tax fund.

In a memo to the board, county highway engineer Fran Klaas said the low bids came in on average about 16 percent below the engineer’s pre-bid estimates.

Of the 12 projects, three were county highway projects. Those project and contracts are as follows: • $1.4 million awarded to D Construction Inc. for resurfacing work on about five miles of Plainfield Road from Templeton to Ridge Road near Oswego.

• $103,796 awarded to Steffen’s 3-D Construction Inc. for sealcoating work on Grove Road.

• $56,792 awarded to Superior Road Striping for striping work on Eldamain Road from Route 34 north to Menards Distribution Center.

Andy Myer, the county’s assistant highway engineer, said the work on

Grove Road is just a “Band-Aid” project to hold together the road until they do a total reconstruction in the next five years.

The other nine projects span the nine Kendall County townships. Those projects included: • Big Grove Road District, low bid awarded to Steffen’s 3-D Construction Inc. for sealcoating work in the amount of $96,181.

• Bristol Road District, low bid awarded to Geneva Construction for resurfacing work in the amount of $426,647.

• Fox Road District, low bid awarded to Steffen’s 3-D Construction Inc. for sealcoating work in the amount of $58,657.

• Kendall Road District, low bid awarded to D Construction Inc. for resurfacing work in the amount of $122,624.

• Lisbon Road District, low bid awarded to Steffen’s 3-D Construction Inc. for sealcoating work in the amount of $39,632.

• Little Rock Road District, low bid awarded to Builder Paving Inc. for resurfacing work in the amount of $72,172.

• NaAuSay Road District, low bid awarded to Steffen’s 3-D Construction Inc. for sealcoating work in the amount of $29,351.

Bomb squad disposes of device in Yorkville

The memo from Klaas also indicates that 10 contracts were for township and village projects that don’t use motor fuel tax funds, wherein the county is not the awarding authority. Those contracts totaled about $1.9 million. The county bids those projects and the local jurisdiction approves them.

TAP funds OK’d

In a related matter, the board unanimously approved awarding $6,000 from the Kendall County Transportation Alternatives Program (KC-TAP) funds to the Kendall County Forest Preserve District for the construction of a shared use path along Route 34.

The KC-TAP funds allow the county to provide financial assistance to government entities that apply for funds to construct multi-use trails and sidewalks in the county. The board also approved awarding $35,000 in TAP funds to the city of Yorkville for the construction of a multi-use path and sidewalks along Route 47.

Yorkville police evacuated homes in and around the 1100 block of Homestead Drive in the Heartland subdivision Monday evening as the Kane County bomb squad safely removed and then disposed of a suspicious device.

Police said the device was discovered by a juvenile on the south side of the city near Whitekirk Lane and Callander Trail. The juvenile then brought the device home.

Police said they received a call of a possible explosive device on Homestead Drive at 6:16 p.m.

Police evacuated the surrounding homes and secured the area.

Upon arrival, the bomb squad took control of the device and it was “subsequently disposed of properly,” according to police. Residents reported hearing an explosion between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.

According to a Yorkville School District statement sent Tuesday morning, “It was later determined that the object in question was a firework.”

The Fox Valley Family YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day, a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active, on Saturday, April 30.

“The Y believes in the potential of all children, and we strive to help kids find the ‘wow’ factor inside themselves.

A child’s development is never on vacation and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the summer,” said Stephanie Wayne, Fox Valley Family YMCA senior operations director.

The Fox Valley Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at 3875 Eldamain Road and features fun, active play and education-

al activities, such as an Aqua Track (set up in the pool), aikido demonstrations, kids’ fitness classes, healthy food and snacks, raffles and more. State Sens.

Sue Rezin and Jim Oberweis will be in attendance and there will be a special appearance from Ozzie, the Kane County Cougars’ mascot.

The Fox Valley Family YMCA is holding a free community event on Saturday, April 30, to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. This year marks the 25th annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families.

The event features a free fitness launch, a special landing by the Superior Air Med-One helicopter, emergency equipment from Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and Little Rock-Fox Fire Department for kids to tour, free swim lessons, a gymnastics open gym, an inflatable obstacle course, family yoga, raffles, games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, local vendors and more to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.

The Y will also offer free registration when kids sign up for Summer Day Camp and the membership joining fee will be 50 percent off all day on April 30.

YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at over 1,300 Ys across the country by more than 1.2 million participants, works to get more kids moving and learning, creating habits that they continue all summer long, which is a critical time for kids’ health.

PLANO POLICE REPORTS Home fire extinguished Plano police officers observed a fire in a residence in the 400 block of Abe Street in Plano at 4:34 a.m. April 14.

Police said occupants were safely escorted from the residence and crews from the Little Rock-Fox and Sandwich fire protection districts extinguished the blaze.

Warrant arrest Plano police arrested Robert Rutherford-Sobol, no age given, April 14 on a LaSalle County warrant for failure to appear in court.

Passenger arrested Plano police arrested Joe R. Ordonez, 63, of the 600 block of Broadway Avenue, Aurora, at 3:27 a.m. April 16 after they stopped the vehicle he was a passenger in for a traffic violation. Police said they learned that Ordonez was wanted on a DeKalb County warrant for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Royal, 43, of the 300 block of Elm Street, was taken with injuries to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich after she was struck by a motorist on Frazier Road near Cook Road at 1:14 p.m. April 17, county sheriff’s deputies reported. Police said the offending motorist struck the rear of the Royal’s bicycle, causing her to fall onto the shoulder and land in a ditch. The vehicle drove away. A passerby stopped and brought Royal to the hospital.

Identity theft Sheriff’s police are investigating an identity theft incident involving an Oswego Township resident. Police said someone obtained the victim’s personal information, set up several lines of credit and then charged over $6,000 to those accounts.

An attempted abduction of a McDole Elementary School student near the school on Montgomery’s far west side April 11 did not occur, according to a statement from Police Chief Daniel Meyers issued late April 13.

Police had reported they were investigating the incident in a statement issued April 12.

Kaneland School District officials, in a statement sent to parents and guardians at 8 a.m. April 14, said: “On Tuesday, April 12, we informed the community of an attempted abduction before school of a McDole Elementary student. The Montgomery Police Department, after further investigation by detectives which included multiple interviews with the student and family, has determined that this incident did not occur. ... Kaneland CUSD 302 is grateful that our student’s safety was not compromised. Although the incident reported to us was false, we wish to reiterate the importance of continued discussions regarding personal safety with your student.”

Vehicle damaged A resident of the 10000 block of Legion Road, Yorkville, told county sheriff’s deputies that someone keyed his vehicle while it was parked outside his residence overnight April 14.

Two face charges County sheriff’s deputies arrested Cyrus Rex Hedblade, 19, of the 100 block of Dolores Street, Oswego, and Tara Kathleen Bukovsky, 18, of the 280 block of Campton Hill Road, St. Charles, after stopping their vehicle for a speeding violation at Dolores Street and Laurie Lane in unincorporated Oswego Township at 11:49 p.m. April 13.

Police said Hedblade has been charged with driving on a suspended license and possession and consumption of alcohol by a person under 21 years of age.

Lineups jell in time for home invite

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Plano track and field team took advantage of the perfect weather conditions with a full slate of competition to cap the week.

The Reapers competed in the annual Seneca Invite last Friday before the boys’ lineup entered the Ottawa ABC Invite on Saturday.

Now, Plano prepares for its final event on the spring schedule before the Interstate Eight Conference meet arrives, hosting its annual Track and Field of Dreams Invite on Saturday at 10 a.m.

“The kids just really respond well to running at home. They want to protect their home track and show off for their friends and whoever comes by, so they’re getting very excited for Saturday,” Plano coach Rob Wegley said. “We’re really looking forward to what type of times we run and how we match up against some really good competition.”

In Seneca, the Irish swept their invite, with the boys edging out Plano 106-93 in the team standings. The Plano girls scored 36 points to take seventh overall.

“Their attitudes are so positive and so phenomenal,” Wegley said. “The girls team is small and they always respond they’ll do anything for the team. They’re always team first and whatever will help the team score

the most points. Our lineups are definitely coming together.”

Plano’s 4x200-meter relay is closing in on the school record and finished second behind Kankakee McNamara with a time of 1:37.81 behind the efforts of Mauricio Perez, Davion Cole, Michael Marshall and Jeremiah Murff.

Murff also posted season-best finishes in the 200-meter dash, taking second by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 22.87. He also won the triple jump with an impressive mark of 42-4¼.

Perez was second in the 100 (11.44), and the 4x400-meter relay team took a runner-up finish in 3:32 behind Dwight. Tommy Brown also knocked out a second-place effort in the shot put with a mark of 48-4½, and Christian Estrada cleared 6-0 to take second in the high jump.

In the girls’ division, the 4x100-meter relay team of Lindsay Hoalt, Brielle Tucker, Khiyana Magee and Daisy Mendoza finished second with a time of 52.66 seconds. Individually, Tucker was fourth in the 100 (13.41) and fifth in the 200 (28.23 seconds). “[Tucker] has really been racking up the points in the individual races and she works her tail off every day at practice,” Wegley said.

On Saturday, Plano scored a combined 31.66 points at the Ottawa ABC Invite. The 4x200 posted a winning time of 1:31.63.

Errors, miscues keep victories away from Plano Team hoping to break 7-game losing streak

The Plano softball team has struggled to get wins this season.

The Reapers are 2-8 entering play against Coal City, Newark, Peotone and Indian Creek this week. The Reapers have dropped the last seven contests.

“We are still trying to make it happen, still trying to figure it out,” Plano coach Dwayne Love said. “We are still trying to put all the puzzle pieces together. The girls are starting to come

around and we’re seeing improvement.”

On Monday in a five-inning, 11-1 loss to Coal City, the Reapers made four errors, as the Coalers scored runs in every inning and out-hit them 113. Plano (0-4 in the Interstate Eight Conference) was led by senior Jenna Alsvig (two hits) and the lone RBI was from senior Belle Salas.

“Too many errors created a windfall, and it’s tough to keep a positive attitude when that many errors happen,” Love said.

In the 3-0 loss to Streator last Friday, Plano only had one hit from Salas.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the first, second and sixth innings.

“We played well [against Streator], but we just had a couple of miscues,”

After losing the two-game Interstate Eight Conference series with Sandwich last week, the Plano baseball team responded with back-to-back wins over Genoa-Kingston and Streator. The Reapers are 6-7 overall (1-3 in conference) after Monday’s tough 5-4 loss to Coal City.

Plano is just one victory away from tying last season’s total number of wins, which is a huge positive to coach John Parpet.

“It’s awesome,” Parpet said. “The kids are aware we are one win away from matching last year. We are start-

ing to see the kids are really buying in. We are starting to feel like baseball is important here. We’ve been right around the .500 mark all year. Up to this point, it’s been a very successful season. This is an awesome group of kids and we’ve been competitive in every game. With the exception of the Sandwich series, we’ve beaten every team like us.”

In the 7-5 win over Genoa-Kingston, the game was tied 4-4 after three innings before the Cogs led 5-4 entering the sixth. That’s when Plano scored twice. Sergio Chavez posted three hits while Tyler Ward and Daniel Nunez each had two RBIs. “Pitching has been good all year, but

Chavez also had two RBIs. “It’s nice because we jumped on them early – teams have been doing that to us all year,” Parpet said.

On April 12, Sandwich beat Plano, 5-3, after the Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the third. The Reapers were led by Ethan Kee’s two RBIs. On Saturday, Oswego East defeated Plano, 16-5, in five innings after the Wolves scored 10 runs in the top of the

FOXES SHUT OUT REAPERS Plano struggles to get offense going; dropped 4 games last week

Offensive opportunities were extremely limited for the Plano girls soccer team in its non-conference contest at Yorkville on Monday.

The Foxes, however, got many chances to score and took advantage of the situation in their 6-0 victory over the Reapers.

The win was Yorkville’s fourth straight and improved the squad to 7-2 overall.

The Reapers dropped to 2-7-1.

“It was a very defensive game,” Plano coach Valerie Pelizza said. “The girls played really hard, but in the second half, the momentum changed after the third goal. At halftime, I told them, ‘All a coach can ask is for you to play with heart and for you to give it everything and have intensity.’ I thought they were doing that. They were stepping up, they were challenging balls and they were going for everything.”

Yorkville led 2-0 at halftime after goals from sophomore Nicole Loquercio (assist Abby Wahl) less than two minutes into the game and sophomore Catelyn Peterson (assist from sophomore Peyton Willie) with 7:09 left in the first half.

Willie had the assist on the third goal of the game, when freshman Becca Schuberth found the back of the net (assist from Willie) with 13:03 left to play. She scored again about seven minutes later.

About 30 second after that, with 6:01 left to go, Allison Novak’s goal (assist from Wahl) pushed the Foxes ahead 5-0.

The final goal of the game was tallied by Wahl (assist from Lupe Anguiano) with five seconds left to play.

Jessica Lizzio played in goal with two saves for the Foxes.

“It’s nice to come out with a win, but we didn’t play our game today,” Yorkville coach Lauren Anderson said. “We took 36 shots in the first half, and we needed to finish them. We had plenty of opportunities but only had two goals. There are some things we need to work on to get better... but we are winning the games we should be winning.”

“We haven’t really been able to create offensively,” Pelizza said. “We haven’t had many opportunities to score throughout the whole season. We’ve been working on it in practice, trying to connect passes, possess the ball.
