Special ed co-op names board Plano superintendent to head organization

news@kendallcountynow.com The Plano Area Special Education Cooperative (PASEC) is now an official organization with officers who will serve on the board to direct it.

The co-op held its first official meeting March 29 at the Newark High School and elected officers.

PASEC was formed recently to replace the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative, which was dissolved a few months ago when member school districts dropped out.

Dr. Hector Garcia, superintendent of Plano School District 88, who was instrumental in forming PASEC, was elected board president; Dr. Diane Cepela, Newark Grade School District superintendent, was named board vice president; Amy Smith, Newark High School District superintendent, was elected board secretary; and Dr. Michael Rustman, Lisbon Grade School District superintendent, was elected

board treasurer.

They represent the school districts that are members of PASEC. The board will meet on June 8 to present an application to the Illinois State Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Disabilities, but no location was set for the meeting.

This is the agency that will give final approval of the application, Garcia said.

The board voted to hold regular meetings at 9 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month. The meeting place will be rotated between schools, and announced in advance.

Board members approved their articles of agreement for PASEC and approved a three-year employment agreement with Amy Lee as director of PASEC. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and am looking forward to getting started,” she said.

She will work out of an office in the Plano School District administration center and will receive an annual salary of $95,000. The details of the agreement were outlined in a previous Plano Record story.

Property tax forum for county homeowners set for April 28

Local homeowners interested in learning about the process for determining property taxes and how to appeal if they believe they may have been over-assessed are invited to attend a free outreach forum sponsored by State Rep. John Anthony, R-Joliet, called “Understanding and Appealing Your Property Tax Assessment.”

The forum will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Kendall Township Town Hall in Yorkville, 9925 Illinois Route 47 (just north of Walker Road). It will include a presentation about the property tax assessment process followed by a question-and-answer session with staff knowledgeable about property tax policy.

Free informational brochures will also be provided.

“Our goal is to educate and empower homeowners to understand the property tax system and to know their rights if they believe they have been over-assessed,” Anthony said. “I encourage every local homeowner to attend this workshop and share their questions and concerns with us about property taxes.”

Lee, said they had several applicants for the position and three that were interviewed.

However, he said Lee stood out as the most qualified because of her time working with the former Kendall County Special Education Cooperative. And she has worked with the teachers, all of whom will be transferred to PASEC, he said.

Garcia noted that Lee has knowledge of the students, has a background in special education and has a long history of experience in Plano, not only with her family living here, but her own involvement in the community.

The new board approved transferring the special education instructors now working in the schools to PASEC, but they will continue working in the same schools, he said.

They include the Plano Middle School and High School, Emily G. Johns School, Centennial Elementary School, P.H. Miller School, and St. Mary’s School, all in Plano, as well as the Millbrook Junior High in Newark.

Co-op officials plan to have 44 teachers, social workers and paraprofessionals hired by July 1 to start the 201617 school year.

news@kendallcountynow.com Plano Mayor Bob Hausler is asking residents to back legislation that would create a level playing field for local business when it comes to charging customers state sales taxes.

He asked that they notify their U.S. senators and congressmen to pass House Resolution 2775 and the Remote Transaction Parity Marketplace Fairness Act 698 in the Senate.

“I would like anyone who has a

small business or who cares about our small businesses to contact our congressmen and ask them to support this legislation,” Hausler said. “This legislation would establish a tax on Internet sales and create a level playing field for Plano’s local businesses. The Internet merchants have an unfair advantage.”

“It’s pretty devastating to have a customer check an item in a local store and then purchase it on the Internet for less money because they do not have to pay the state sales tax,”

Hausler said.

“It’s an unfair system and I ask that our residents support this legislation,” he added.

Hausler could not estimate what Plano loses each year from these Internet sales to companies such as Amazon, but he said this is just one of thousands of Internet companies that compete with Plano’s local merchants.

He said the state has made some arrangements with Amazon, but not with the thousands of other Internet businesses that have an unfair advantage over local businesses.

According to the Illinois Government Finance Officers Association, this legislation would enable state and local governments to collect taxes

from retailers on Internet sales, based on the consumer’s location.

The association said these sales taxes are already owed to local merchants but not being paid.

In other business during the council meeting, Police Chief Steve Eaves presented commendations to Officers Roberto Hernandez and John Beery for their work in rescuing a woman from a burning residence in the 300 block of East Jones Street in the city Feb. 7.

Hausler joined Eaves in making the presentation.

SHAW MEDIA A judge overseeing Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case has appointed a doctor to review the former U.S. House Speaker’s medical records, the Associated Press reported late last week.

U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin said in a filing March 31 that Northwestern University Dr. Robert S. Golden would conduct the review, the AP reports.

The evaluation was ordered last month after Hastert’s sentencing was delayed because his lawyers told the AP that he had nearly died and remained in poor health.

Hastert is now scheduled Dennis to be sentenced April 27. Hastert Durkin’s filing says Golden’s practice is affiliated with Northwestern Memorial Hospital in

Chicago and that he is board certified in internal medicine.

He also is an assistant professor at Northwestern’s medical school.

In last month’s order, Judge Durkin said he wanted a doctor to “provide an independent report to the court on the defendant’s medical condition.”

Hastert, a Plano resident, pleaded guilty Oct. 28 to violating bank laws in seeking to pay someone $3.5 million in hush money.

To the Editor: “No taxation without representation.”

That was the cry in the 1750s, some 266 years ago, and was responsible for the Colonists’ overthrowing the yoke of oppression with no voice in government.

Sound familiar?

Maybe it’s time for another movement.

Today, the majority of Americans want: a balanced budget; immigration and tax reform; term limits; a gun and environmental policy; a government that works.

You see any changes/movement in that direction in the last 10 years?

All the Founding Fathers – Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison, Adams – and the original 13 states did not always agree and get along on policies, yet they were able to come together and forge the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for the public good. Today we can’t even get politicians to agree to visit with a Supreme Court nominee – DOA. Time Magazine reports, and I think it’s ironic, that in Madison’s era, “The key to good government was to elect virtuous and ethical political leaders capable of transcending narrow self-interest and that no one faction should gain undue influence and subvert the public good.”

Roger Matile Northern Illinois is beginning to edge its way into true spring these days, which means the hoped-for April showers will persuade all those May flowers to begin peeking out of the ground. Of course, the early spring flowers, hardy fellows that they are, have already been growing in the increasingly strong sunlight for several weeks now – especially with the unseasonably warm weather of the past few months.

When the first hardy pioneers arrived on the prairies on both sides of the Fox River from Waubonsie Creek to the north south to the AuSable, they found upland prairies dotted with groves of hardwoods that sometimes merged with the belts of trees growing along the creeks that drained the area in what would one day become Kendall County.

Timber, scarce as it was, providing building materials for everything from homes, farm buildings and fences, was the settlers’ old and familiar friend. What was new to them, and sometimes not a little intimidating, was all that prairie land stretching sometimes to the horizon like an unbroken ocean.

Virtually everyone who left an account of their first few years on the Illinois prairie provided a list of superlatives. And it’s fortunate that some of those accounts survive to let us glimpse what those early travelers and settlers found.

The fascinating English author, abolitionist and sociologist Harriet Martineau visited northern Illinois in 1836, and left a vivid record of the beauty of the Illinois prairie she saw near Joliet. She told of the beauty of the American primroses and the “... difficulty in distinguishing distances on the prairie. The feeling is quite bewildering. A man walking near looked like a Goliath a mile off.”

Her dinner one evening consisted of tea, bread, potatoes and wild strawberries, of which a whole pail-full had been gathered around the house in which she was staying in only an hour’s time. She remarked about the beauty of the blue spiderwort in full bloom, and of prairies being “perfectly level – a treeless expanse with groves like islands in the distance, and a line of wood on the verge.”

prairie fires. In October 1835, Methodist circuit rider Alfred Brunsen wrote of northern Illinois prairie fires, noting that he had traveled by prairie fire light at night: “By the light of this fire we could read fine print for ½ a mile or more. And the light reflected from the cloud of smoke enlightened our road for miles after the blaze of the fire was out of sight.”

George Hollenback, one of the first two white children born in Kendall County (his twin sister Amelia was the other), gave a description of prairie fires recalled from his childhood.

His memory of them was both exciting and alarming. He recalled seeing, as a child, as many as 50 fires burning at one time within sight of the Hollenback homestead near modern Newark in southern Kendall County, reflecting their light in the clouds on autumn evenings.

“Early settlers protected themselves by ploughing [sic] wide and numerous furrows around their fields and their stockyards,” wrote Hollenback.

Backfires were often started to protect houses and property as well as plowing furrows to creak firebreaks.

The band of blackened prairie grass burned in the backfire usually stopped the on-rushing prairie fire dead in its tracks.

Prairie fires usually burned along the lines of the prevailing winds on

the Illinois prairie. That meant prairie fires most often came out of the west, and traveled eastward on the front of westerly winds. Old maps of Kendall County show that the timber on the western edge of the Fox River and the creeks in the county was much less dense that on the eastern edge, the trees on the west side thinned by the annual fires driven by those westerlies.

A number of early Kendall County settlers left accounts of what Kendall County looked like when they arrived, just before settlement changed the prairies forever. Mary Elizabeth Jeneson, a member of Oswego’s Nineteenth Century Club, read a paper to the club in 1906, in which she stated: “No words of mine can convey to you the vastness, the grandeur and beauty of the natural prairie in 1850 when I first came to Oswego. The music of the big frogs down in the slough and the drumming of prairie chickens must have been heard to be appreciated.

The Fox River was pretty then. Its banks furnished attractions for those who liked a stroll – a sort of Lovers’ Lane, in fact.”

In 1914, Avery N. Beebe, an early Kendall County resident and elected official, offered his recollections of how the area appeared to county pioneers: “This little chosen spot of God’s heritage, selected by the sturdy old pioneers of Kendall County, has been

richly blessed with all the advantages that kind nature ever bestows: with its clear silvery streams, the Blackberry, the Big Rock, the Little Rock, the Aux Sable, the Waubonsia, the Rob Roy, the Clark, the Hollenback, and the Morgan, that pour their pure crystal liquids into the placid Fox and Illinois Rivers. All of these were densely skirted with abundant timbers for the use of the early settlers to construct the primitive log cabin, supply it with fuel, and establish the forest home in the wilds of the West; as it was then called.”

Change has been ongoing in northern Illinois in general and Kendall County in particular since the first pioneers’ wagons pulled up along the banks of the Fox River in 1828.

During the last 50 years, that change accelerated as the county’s farmland – which itself replaced the stunning prairies described by the pioneers – has disappeared in job lots, with housing developments and shopping centers crowding out more and more open land.

But on the positive side of the ledger, organized, serious efforts to preserve the region’s prairie past and the region’s remaining natural areas are continuing to grow.

Tracing family’s roots to mid-19th century We will look at the Toombs-Greenfield-Lawrie Family Tree today.

There are many ways to type up such a document. While the author may choose the formatting, at least to some degree, it is important that the order and the names, dates, and places are all correct. Here are the generations we’ll be involved with: William Franklin Toombs Sr. married Alta Smith, daughter of Whiting and Eunice (Winchester) Toombs of New York State. They married in New York in 1824. Their second son was named Whiting after Alta’s father, Whiting Smith. They arrived in Little Rock Township by 1847.

They had six children: 1) Martin Toombs, who was born about 1826, was the first. It appears that he died in California, and it is assumed that he had gone there for the gold rush.

2) Sarah Ann Toombs was born on Nov. 22, 1827, in Portage, Wyoming County, New York. She came to Little Rock Township where she met and married Dr. Westel Willoughby Sedgwick. His father had died two years earlier in Little Rock Village and 18-year-old Westel stepped into his job as the community doctor. Westel’s mother was Ruhama Patience Knight, a woman of the future as she went by “R.P.” Westel was the eldest of her eight children.

Sarah and Westel had 10 children but, despite having a physician in the home, five of them died in childhood.

Their son Parker Sedgwick lived in a beautiful home just south and on the corner across the street from the old Woodward Hospital. Next time you are in Sandwich, check it out. It will catch your eye easily.

Dr. Sedgwick and Sarah Ann were living in Sandwich when their son Charles was born in 1865. He became a deputy Postmaster, as well as a cashier in his father’s bank.

Dr. Sedgwick, besides being a doctor (he graduated from Rush Medical in Chicago), also had a mercantile store, a drug store trade, was a justice of the peace, and passed an examination to be an attorney who was admitted to practice in the State Courts.

These many careers, including banking, kept his name in business until quite recently.

Also in Sandwich were Agnes, their first child, who never married; Parker “Park” and Alma (Robertson) Sedgwick; Harvey, who died in Sandwich at age 15; Charles and Annie (Patterson) Sedgwick; and Jennie May Sedgewick and her husband, Eugene

But back to the Toombs line: their third child was Whiting H. Toombs.

He was named for his mother’s father, Whiting Smith.

“White,” as he was sometimes called, led an interesting life. He was born in Portageville, Wyoming County, New York, on Oct. 22, 1828. By 1850 the family had resettled in Little Rock Township, Kendall County, Illinois.

There one of their neighbors was the family of Thomas and Margaret (Smith) Welch.

Thomas was born in County Cork, Ireland, came to the United States in 1835, and settled in Montgomery County, New York. There he discovered the woman who would be his wife – Margaret Smith. She was born in March 1806 in New York State.

They married about 1825 in Little Falls, Herkimer, New York.

They would have 10 children – Mary Catherine, Jane, Margaret, Thomas, Edward, Julia, Daniel, John, Horatio and Hannah.

It was their eldest, Mary Catherine Welch, who married Whiting Toombs on May 26, 1856, in Kendall County.

So they had been in the neighborhood when some farmer chased the railroad men away with his rifle. And they may even have been in the crowd at Plano when the first train stopped at the brand new depot there – surely it was a day of celebration and neighbors from all over came to town to be in on the excitement.

Whiting and Mary Catherine would have four children. Hattie married Horace Griswold, Mary or “Mame” or even “Mayme” was the third child and she would marry Frank R. Morris, a neighbor of the Toombs family. And the youngest was Willie Toombs who married Mary “Mollie” Holten.

They had six children – Jeanette (Mrs. Reed McAtee); William (Eula Williams); Clarence, who apparently did not marry; Jack Toombs, who with Frances Miller was the couple who ran the Sandwich Floral Shop for so many years; and Aileen, who married Leroy Ward. In addition they adopted Helen Huth when she was a young girl.

BRIEF Sandwich teen dies after car crash in LaSalle County

SANDWICH – A male teen from Sandwich died March 30 following a car crash in LaSalle County.

The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Illinois State Police District 17, responded at 3:47 p.m. March 30 to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 52 and County Highway 3 between the Fox River and Route 71, a release from the sheriff’s office stated.

According to preliminary reports, Sarah L. Coleman, 66, of Mendota, was driving west on Route 52 in a Jeep Cherokee when she approached the intersection of County Highway 3. A Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Austin M. Crabbe, 17, was traveling south on County Highway 3 – also known as E. 2603rd Road – when it failed to stop at the intersection and was hit by the Jeep, police said.

Emergency personnel from Sheridan, Serena and Kendall County responded to the scene. Both drivers were taken by ambulance to OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa, where Crabbe was pronounced dead. Coleman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No other occupants were in either vehicle.

Earl had one more year of school to finish, which he did, and then he became one of the farmers too. Earl never married and I took it from my dad’s comments that Earl knew it cost money to court and marry someone... plus Earl was very quiet. My view was that she would think she was living alone.

Dad was quiet too, but not nearly as much so as Earl. Dad got to know Lydea Lincoln in Plano and on Easter Sunday in March 1940, they married at Bob and Ruth Lincoln’s on (East) Lee Street. I never really knew them there – they moved to West Lee and my Uncle Alan and his wife Shirley moved into the first house.

Bob and Lydea lived on the farm west of Plano from then until they retired. The farm was originally that of James Henning, brother of Cornelius. His daughter, Nora, married a local farm boy, David Baird. Their son, Pliny, was known for his ability to drive a team of horses, winning many prizes at the State Fair and other contests.

When he decided to farm on the Henning farms south of Plano in 1934, Pliny and his wife, Marjory Gifford, moved over to the farms on South Ben Street. And Bob and Earl Lawrie bought the Henning/Baird farm on Little Rock Road. That’s where Kristy and Bruce lived during their childhoods.

You may have noticed that I skipped over the second child of Whiting and Mary Catherine. He was Seymour Toombs. He chose as his bride Florence Elizabeth “Flora” Greenfield, the daughter of neighbors Richard Russell and Ann Elizabeth (Springer) Greenfield. They had two daughters, Mary Elizabeth, who was called “Libbie,” and Dora Etta, who went by “Dora.”

Dora married William Anderson Lawrie. He was 2 when his mother, Elizabeth Anderson Lawrie, brought him and his three brothers – Jim, Jack, and Robert Lawrie – across the ocean from Scotland on a ship called the “State of Georgia” in 1883. The older boys were 7 and 5, while the two younger ones were 2 and 1 at the time.

Elizabeth immediately became very seasick upon going aboard... that left Jim and Jack the run of the ship – and they were active and creative boys. The two younger ones she somehow managed to keep with her in her bunk. Think what a challenge that must have been.

They arrived at “Castle Garden” (the place where immigrants came ashore before Ellis Island existed), managed to get to Plano from there (I assume by train), and met grandpa

James there in September of 1883. He had come a year earlier to “get them settled.” She must have been an independent soul. I know from several different comments by various sons and grandsons, that Grandpa James could be harsh so if you were ever in trouble the thing to do was to run behind Grandma’s skirts and she would “save” you.

All of the sons stayed “in town” when they grew old enough to work, except for William Anderson Lawrie.

He followed in his father’s Scottish occupation, said to be a ploughman on Scottish records, and became the hired man on Seymour Toombs’ farm just west of Sandy Bluff School. Seymour may have wondered why Bill Lawrie wanted to marry the younger daughter of the family, but he could not have gained a son-in-law who would take better care of his estate... it was his Scottish nature to do so.

Billie and Dora married and moved to the Little Rock farm – north of the village and to the west of the curve that comes not far before the Fowler Grove Cemetery. They lived there for nearly 15 years before moving to the farm by Sandy Bluff.

Seymour and Flora moved into Sandwich to officially retire.

Their two sons, who had been learning to farm since they could walk, joined in the project. Robert or Robbie or Bob, depending upon who was talking, had finished eighth

Plano High School’s National Hispanic Institute (NHI) Club will sponsor its second annual Spring Vendor Fair from 6 to 9 p.m.

Friday, April 8, in the Plano High School Auxiliary Gym. Nicholas Beltran and Christobal Dominguez, both sophomores at Plano High School, talked to Plano City Council members last week about the event, which will feature vendors from throughout the area. National Hispanic Institute is one of the school’s many student clubs.

“Last year we had more than 30 direct sales vendors, local businesses and a special guest, and we are still seeking more vendors, entrepreneurs and small businesses,” Beltran told council members.

Marisela Rodriguez-Garcia, human resources assistant and NHI Club sponsor at the school, said they have 27 confirmed vendors from Yorkville, Plano, Montgomery, Somonauk, Sandwich, Rockford, Plainfield, Berwyn, West Chicago, Aurora and DeKalb.

An Aurora author and fashion designer will be speaking during the event, and showing many of her clothing designs, Garcia said.

Claudia Soto-Urrutia, owner of Glanze Boutique, and one of several authors who worked on the book “Today’s Inspired Latina,” will be talking about the book and sign-

ing copies along with several of the other authors who worked on the book.

Soto-Urrutia was born in San Juan Del Rio, Durango, Mexico, and came to the U.S. when she was 17 years old. She learned to sew from her mother.

In 2007, she graduated from the International Academy of Design and Technology.

Later the same year she won the first place at a contest sponsored by the “Humane Society in a Faux-fur Coat.” Since then she’s been working with faux-fur fabrics.

Her collection has been showcased at La Catrina Fashion Show 2012 at the National Museum of the Mexican Art. She is a presenting designer at the Chicago Latino Fashion Week and has held numerous trunk shows and fashion shows in the Chicago area She opened her business, Glanze Boutique in Aurora, in August of 2013. She recently partnered with Ronald Rodriguez to create an upcoming collection. She also designs business attire and evening gowns.

There will be raffles and door prizes at the event and some vendors will have items for sale.

All vendor registration fees will go towards helping NHI Club members at Plano High School attend their summer programs at participating universities, Garcia said.

Utilities stand in way County, mayors of Route 34 project ‘unequivocally’ back Metra studies Work now expected to start after Labor Day

Leaders urge more data gathering for rail line proposal

Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, stating their strong support for the completion of initial environmental and engineering studies for the proposed extension of Metra commuter rail service into the county from downtown Aurora.

Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley told the village board last week he had signed the letter along with John Shaw, county board chairman, Oswego Village President Gail Johnson, Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski, Plano Mayor Robert Hausler and Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson.

Brolley noted that he and the other leaders sent the letter to Hultgren on March 25 with the endorsement of their respective boards and city councils.

Hultgren organized a stakeholder meeting which was held March 7 in Yorkville to discuss the Metra extension. County and municipal officials attended the session, along with Metra Board Chairman Martin Oberman and former State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego.

During the meeting, Oberman – citing Metra’s current financial challenges and existing infrastructure needs – suggested county and municipal officials might want to consider asking that federal funds currently earmarked for further Kendall County Metra service studies be re-allocated to other local transportation improvement projects.

But in their letter to Hultgren, the local leaders note that bringing commuter rail service to Kendall County along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway’s mainline tracks remains “a top priority for the fastest growing county in Illinois and one of the fastest growing regions in the country.”

The letter also notes that Congress previously allocated $7.5 million to pay for the additional studies of a service extension based on preliminary studies conducted in 2001 and 2002. Those prior studies determined a service extension from Aurora into the county would be feasible.

The letter continues, “After discussions with our boards, we unequivocally remain steadfast in our decision to finish these studies.

“Completion of these studies will allow us to draw valid conclusions about the ultimate buildout of the project based on sound data. We believe that the studies should be completed to their full scope, including charge orders, in order to have a comprehensive understanding of the project costs and construction feasibility.”

Work on widening and improving busy Route 34 from Orchard Road in Oswego to Route 47 in Yorkville is expected to be delayed as the Illinois Department of Transportation waits for crews to move utilities.

Work should begin in earnest after Labor Day, Sept. 5, according to Herb Jung, a construction engineer for IDOT. Jung estimates the project will take about two years to complete. Utility poles and gas lines are currently being moved along the highway but, Jung says, AT&T has not yet started moving its infrastructure, which the utility previously estimated would take three to four months to complete.

Contractors will replace the crumbling two-lane blacktop pavement with a four-lane highway with a concrete surface with raised center medians and an adjoining multi-use path along the north side of the road. Curbs and gutters will also be installed.

Craig Reed, studies and plans project engineer for IDOT, said traffic signals on Route 34 at McHugh, Countryside Parkway, Autumn Creek Boulevard, Bristol Ridge Road and O’Brien Way along the highway will also be improved as part of the project.

“Utilities are still in the process of relocating, most of them are rather far along and we haven’t seen AT&T at all yet,” he said. “Our contractor [D Construction] would love to start after the Fourth of July but we’re thinking it’s more like after Labor Day at this point.”

taking down the traffic lights and replacing them with temporary lights.

Crews will also start storm sewer work on the project this fall. Construction on the new roadway will probably begin in early spring 2017, Jung said.

The roadway will be made of concrete pavement and will have a raised median in the center.

“It’s wide enough for bicycles and pedestrians,” Jung said. “I would guess that the contractor could get the underground work and

prep the roadbed – the base, the bed of the road through the winter months and into the early spring,” he said. “I would think by mid spring, late spring 2017 we’ll see new concrete pavement going in along the north [side] of what’s there right now.”

Traffic should not be impacted much during construction, Jung said, as they build the two new westbound lanes north of the current road.

Once that is finished they will transition traffic onto the newly built road. Construction crews will then tear up and rebuild the existing road to put in the eastbound lanes.

“There’s plenty of room there so we’re going to build two brand new lanes where it is open and we have the right-of-way,” he said.

The Relay for Life of Plano, Sandwich and Somonauk will be holding a fundraising event on Saturday, April 16, raising money for the American Cancer Society. The “Strike Out Cancer” night will take place at the Idle Hour Lanes bowling alley at 927 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

Two one-year, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. One scholarship is available for a senior graduating from Plano High School and the other is available for a senior graduating from any U.S. high school. Eligibility requirements are included in the application forms.

The Plano girls soccer team is 1-1-1 this season after the 2-0 loss to Aurora Central Catholic on March 30.

The Chargers scored both goals in the second half. This was Plano’s first time getting shut out this season. Reapers’ goalkeeper Giselle Melendez posted 13 saves in the loss. “[We were] coming off of a tough game against LaSalle-Peru,” Plano coach Valerie Pelizza said. “ACC is a good team with a very strong defensive line. We played hard up until the very last second of the game, but we could not break down their defense. Arieanna Accidentale took many shots at their goal, but we could not find the back of the net.”

Carlos Martinez was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts in seven innings, Will Benson had two hits and an RBI while Marcus Ramirez added a hit and an RBI. Plano then defeated Hinckley-Big Rock, 11-0, in five innings last Thursday. Levi Campbell posted two hits while Ethan Kee and Sergio Chavez each had two RBIs. Tyler Ward was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts.

Baton goes to new coach Wegley takes over at Plano as outdoor season opens

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Although Kristy (Lehner) Zaininger knew this track season would be her last at Plano, she’s officially handing the baton to Rob Wegley.

The decision was made late last week to transition Wegley from assistant to head coach for the 2016 season as Zaininger commutes from Chicago for a new career in business.

“We decided that it would be best for the program that coach Robert Wegley take over as head for the outdoor season and then carry the baton as head for the 2016-2017 season,” Zaininger said. “Currently, we are still in the exchange zone, as I will continue on for the rest of the season, as an assistant, with the future of the program in mind. ... I have a lot of confidence in his ability to keep the steam and the team culture of the program going.”

The team was informed of the coaching change on March 30, and opened the outdoor season one day later, hosting a six-team meet at Reaper Stadium. The Plano boys finished second to Sandwich, 132-120, while the girls scored 96 points, taking second to Sandwich’s 144-point win.

Wegley, a first-year English teacher at Plano, previously coached at Maine West while completing his student teaching last spring. He ran high school track at Glenbrook South and continued at North Central College before a knee injury sidelined his collegiate career.

“The kids have been super receptive and I think everything is going really well,” Wegley said. “The indoor season really prepared us for the outdoor season. We’re dealing with some injuries that are less-than ideal, but for the most part we have a lot of kids who are standing out. The season has started out very well for us.”

The boys’ team won six events on the day, with Tommy Brown winning the shot put with a mark of 49-11½. On the track, the 4x800-meter relay team of Sebastian Esparza, Alexian Saavedra, Jorge Aguilar and Ryan Jernigan clocked in a winning time of 9:20, while the 4x100-meter relay of Mauricio Perez, Jeremiah Murff, Jay Winter and Andrew Basden also placed first.

Perez won the 100-meter dash and Jernigan won the 400 with a time of

55.22. The 1,600-meter relay of Jernigan, Perez, Murff and Michael Marshall ended the meet with a top time of 3:45.

The Plano girls secured first-place finishes in four events, with Allison Smith clearing 4-8 to win the high jump, Jessica Prentice won the 3,200 in 15:03, and Daisy Mendoza won the 100 dash in 13.22 seconds.

“The kids just went out and competed, and that’s all we can ask them to do,” Wegley said. “There were a lot of kids filling in with different events because of injuries, and they stepped up admirably. They were up to the task.”
