New principal hired at PHS

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com James A. Seput of Shorewood will be the new principal of Plano High School. Seput was one of more than 35 applicants for the job, Plano School District 88 Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia told school board members at a special meeting Monday night.

The board members voted unanimously to approve Seput’s hiring.

Before the vote was taken, Garcia read comments received from administrators in the districts where Seput has worked in the past. All lauded him for his accomplishments while serving in their districts.

He will officially start in Plano on July 1 at an annual salary of $117,000.

He will receive the usual paid health insurance and the district will pay for his contributions to the Illinois Teachers Retirement System.

Garcia said Seput will be making frequent visits to the high school before his official starting date.

Seput was one of seven applicants who were called in for interviews conducted by staff members and a select group of parents. Applicants for the position included educators ranging from assistant principals to superintendents and district administrators, Garcia said.

He said Seput was chosen for his experience, insight into developing a strong school culture and collaborative approach.

Seput received his bachelor’s degree from College of St. Francis in Joliet, his master’s degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago, his teaching certificate with a minor in PE from Lewis

versation, something I’ve never had with any superintendent. He’s the kind of person I believe I can call anytime I want to talk about something or to discuss a new idea,” Seput added.

“I’m very excited and ready to go.

Each building has different and new challenges. I want to get to know the staff and the parents and I want to get the parents more involved,” he said.

Seput is aware Plano is a blue collar town where both parents in many families work.

“They’re always welcome to visit the school to talk to me. And if I have to meet with someone at 5 in the morning over breakfast, I’ll do it,” Seput said, adding, “I’m open to any suggestions and always willing to talk to parents and students.”

He also will give parents his cellphone number so they can contact him with questions and concerns.

“I want the students to know who I am, so they’ll be seeing me in the halls, in the cafeteria, at sporting events and elsewhere,” he said.

He and his wife, Joy, have three children – Riley, a senior at Minooka High School, Zoey, a freshman at Minooka, and Mason, a sixth-grader at Minooka Intermediate School. His wife teaches sixth grade and social studies at Indian Trail Middle School in Plainfield.

Menards well plan again questioned

He began his career at Hubert H. Humphrey School in Bolingbrook in 2000, where he served as athletic director, PE teacher and dean of students.

From there he moved to Brooks Middle School in 2004 to serve as dean of students, and in 2006 moved to Oswego East High School where he served in several capacities, including dean of students, summer school principal, and assistant principal from 2007-2014.

He then moved to his present position as principal of Scullen Middle School in Naperville.

Seput said he was looking at North Carolina because one daughter would like to go there and play volleyball and the other daughter wants to attend the University of North Carolina because they have a good dental hygienist program. But then the Plano High School principal position came to his attention through a former fellow administrator Tracy Thurwanger, who was hired last year by Plano as director for teaching and learning.

“She encouraged me to apply for the job,” he said, adding that he and Thurwanger worked together at Oswego East High School and at Scullen Middle School, where she was his assistant principal.

He said he was looking for a smaller district where people are more personal.

“I’ve always worked in large districts and they’re very impersonal.

More than a dozen Plano residents, some armed with technical data and others just concerned about their home water wells, attended the March 27 Plano City Council Committee of the Whole meeting at city hall.

Some residents and city council members are concerned about a 7,000-foot-deep well proposed by Menards for its site on Eldamain Road.

As he did at a prior meeting, Scott Nuttelman, Menards real estate representative, spent about an hour answering questions from the aldermen.

He said water to be drawn from the new well will be mixed with non-hazardous chemicals by Menards to treat lumber it uses and sells for building

construction. He said no dust is created by the process and the treated lumber will be completely dry before it is removed from the building. None of the lumber will be cut in the building, so there is no danger of dust being created, he added.

Once the well is drilled, he said it will be sealed off with a pipe casing surrounded by concrete to keep it from leaking into the surrounding area.

Residents who live in the area of Menards expressed concern about the proposed well taking water from the much shallower wells supplying their homes with water. Nuttelman said the well will be private and be used only

by Menards for their treatment plant.

It will take water from an aquifer that is separate from the others in the area, so it will not affect the shallower wells

that supply the residents, he said.

Nuttelman said it will be considered city property, so if it ever causes problems, the city can turn it off. If Menards discontinues using the well at any time, the company will cap and seal it, he added. Nuttelman said the company has three other identical treatment facilities operating in Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The plant will be operated on two shifts each day and will be busier during the construction season, he said.

Mayor Bob Hausler said they want the city’s water superintendent and public works director to make periodic inspections at the site.

Aldermen agreed to continue the discussion until their next Committee of the Whole meeting to be held following the April 10 council meeting.

Challenger Dwayne Love captured the most votes in the election for three board seats, with 445 votes counted. Incumbent board Vice President James A. Ward received 436 votes, while incumbent Estela M. Martinez received 392 votes.

Incumbent Michael Jernigan lost, with 351 votes Dwayne Love counted.

Tim Waldrop, a former Plano alderman, ran unopposed for a two-year term on the Board of Education.

Paul Heller, who has served two full elected terms on the school board and was appointed to the board in November 2006, did not run for re-election. Shalley Wakeman, who was appointed in 2015 and whose term expires this year, also did not run for re-election on the school board.

Caterpillar confirms 800 jobs will move Manufacturing to exit local plant by end of ’18

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Caterpillar representatives have notified local government officials that the company plans to move its manufacturing out of its Oswego Township plant.

Caterpillar had announced in January that it was considering the move, but it has now made it official, according to Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder, who learned of the move in a call from Caterpillar representa-

tives Friday afternoon.

In a statement Friday, the company said that although manufacturing will move out of the Aurora plant, the company plans to maintain an Aurora office for engineering and product support work.

The transitions are expected to be complete by the end of 2018, the company’s statement said.

A Caterpillar spokesman said in January that 800 of the plant’s 2,000 workers were involved in production.

Three new aldermen were elected to the Plano City Council on Tuesday, according to unofficial totals from the Kendall County Clerk’s Office.

In Ward 1, Barbara Nadeau defeated challenger Michael Scott Wankel, capturing 156 votes to Wankel’s 120. Nadeau will replace incumbent Alderman Melody Herreid, who did not run for re-election, in that ward seat.

Nadeau, 59, works for Senior Services Associates coordinating a national volunteer program.

In a questionnaire submitted to the Plano Record, Nadeau outlined a variety of priorities if she were elected.

“My priorities include better oversight of city finances, enhancing economic development and recreational opportunities, and working to see comprehensive plans initiated and fulfilled for our streets and parks,” she said.

In Ward 2, Jamal Williams defeated incumbent Alderman Robert A. Hyde and challenger John E Fawver, with Williams

capturing 115 votes to Hyde’s 59 votes and Fawver’s 54 votes. Hyde, first elected in 2009, was running for his third term as alderman.

Williams, 45, is a respiratory therapist at a facility in Bolingbrook.

In a questionnaire submitted to the Plano Record, said he would like the city to pursue Barbara businesses in the second ward.

Nadeau “There is a lot of open land and opportunity in this ward,” he said. “We just need the right people at the table to foster profitable agreements to allow and attract long term relationships with potential clients.”

Loss of Caterpillar jobs a hit to workers, economy The news we reported last Friday afternoon on our website at KendallCountyNow.com that Caterpillar will halt production work at its Oswego Township plant by the end of next year was not unexpected.

Company officials had announced and we had reported in January that they were considering the move. Friday’s announcement made it official that 800 jobs will be eliminated from the local plant as the company shifts production of large-wheel loaders and compactors to a plant in downstate Decatur and the production of medium-wheel loaders to another plant in Arkansas.

In a statement, Caterpillar officials have said the 800 local production employees will have the “opportunity to apply for other opportunities within Caterpillar.” Meanwhile, an estimated 1,200 non-production employees will continue to work at the plant – for now.

Caterpillar announcement is bad news for the local economy and, most importantly, the 800 employees and their families. We are hopeful that many will be able to find work at the company’s other locations, but understand how difficult it can be for families to pick up everything and move to new communities, schools, etc.

The pending end of production work at the plant also has local

officials now wondering about Caterpillar’s long-term plans for the plant at Route 31 and Caterpillar Drive, just outside Montgomery’s municipal limits. Besides the thousands of jobs it provided, the plant has been a prime source of property tax revenue for School District 308 and other local governmental agencies since it opened in 1957.

Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder said Friday that Caterpillar representatives told him local governmental officials will have the opportunity to speak to the company’s director of real estate about the future of the plant site.

Lisa Miller, a Caterpillar spokesman, noted that production will not be fully moved out of the plant until the end of 2018 and said over the next year and a half “the company will work with community leaders to determine the future use of the facility as the company goes forward.”

We encourage Gryder and other local governmental officials to ramp up efforts to work with Caterpillar officials in an effort to encourage the company to remain in Kendall County.

Even a significantly reduced presence by the company in the local plant for the long-term will be far better for the local economy and the local tax base than no presence.

It was a great story, but couldn’t be verified until the National Archives digitized the records of postmaster appointments. Debbie Buchanan, who rides herd on Montgomery history, decided to search the database almost as soon as it was posted, and she struck local history gold.

Turns out, Elijah Pearce (a brother of the Pearce founders of Oswego), who maintained a stagecoach inn at the Montgomery ford, was appointed postmaster of a post office named Wyponsie – probably after famed Chief Waubonsee – on Aug. 25, 1834, which would have made it one of the oldest post offices in northern Illinois. But then those scalawags up in Aurora apparently managed to get Pearce’s key, which they kept. With no key, the Wyponsie Post Office was discontinued Nov. 16, 1835. The Aurora Post Office was officially established March 2, 1837. Montgomery wouldn’t get its own post office until 1844, meaning Aurora stole a decade-long march on growth.

In 1908 when an Aurora history was written, longtime residents were asked what they felt were the most important happenings in the community’s history. Second on the old settlers’ list was “The getting of the post office from Montgomery.”

We are blessed to live in a community that shows such dignified support for our veterans. The Fox Valley Kickers Club served as host and provided a top-notch service to this cause. To the Editor: May is National Preservation Month, a time to celebrate our shared heritage.

Kendall County is blessed to possess a rich history. This history shapes our identity and is essential in defining our

county’s character and values.

In an effort to celebrate our shared history, we are excited to announce that the Kendall County Historic Preservation Commission will have a booth on Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the PrairieFest Expo in Oswego. We will be joined by other historical groups in the county. We hope you will stop by our booth and find out more about our great history and how you can get involved.

The Kendall County Historic Preservation Commission was established to influence comprehensive historic preservation planning within the county and to recognize, support and protect the quality of life enjoyed by the residents.

The Historic Preservation Commission uses the technical standards issued by the Department of the Interior which produces reliable, understandable, and up-to-date information for decision-mak-

ing related to the identification, evaluation, and protection/treatment of historic resources.

Every once in a while, myth turns into truth, and when it does, it makes history dabblers like me happy.

I must admit that, on the local level, the historical myths that predominate will likely never be proven. We were told, beginning when we were kids, that it’s a well-known fact that some famous or infamous person did this or that thing right here in our own hometown or neighborhood. And sometimes it really happened, which is great, but most often it didn’t – although there’s almost always a grain of truth in every story about the past of our home regions we hear.

For someone like me, who enjoys telling a good story, it’s always a little off-putting when the story is good, but might not be true. That means using a lot of indefinite words and phrases to make sure readers know that the story might be good, but it might also be untrue. And when one of those good stories is proven true, it’s especially satisfying.

For instance, the story I heard as a youngster that the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad really wanted to cross the Fox River at my hometown of Oswego, but didn’t do it because the silly residents here thought railroad technology was just a flash in the pan.

Instead, they held out for the road proposed by the Oswego & Indiana Plank Road Company that was to extend from Oswego east all the way to Indiana.

Well, there really was such a plan for a plank road, which really did fall through, with only a couple miles built linking Joliet and Plainfield. But did the railroad really think Oswego was the spot to cross the Fox River and not

Communications Commission (FCC) regulation on internet privacy. Let’s be clear – the proposed rule was published in December 2016 and had never gone into effect in the first place.

When proposed, the FCC claimed the rules would provide broadband customers meaningful choice, greater transparency and strong security protections for their personal information collected by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). ISPs only include a designated number of providers.

And these ISPs do not have unique or complete access to consumers’ online activity, according to experts including Larry Downes of Georgetown University and others at the Georgia Tech Institute for Information Security and Privacy.

Because of this, the rule arbitrarily treated ISPs differently from the rest of the internet. Search engines like Google and Microsoft’s Bing, as well as third-party companies, were carved out, creating a false sense of privacy that simply didn’t exist. This left a vast majority of browsing and customer information unprotected and does a great disservice to consumers.

That’s why I supported reversing this rule.

should maintain its jurisdiction over this area. Rolling back the FCC’s proposed rule puts the full authority for compliance back with the FTC. In a bid to expand its own power, the FCC stripped the FTC of its jurisdictional authority and reclassified ISPs as common carriers. The FCC’s power grab created a dual-track system in which the FCC applies its own set of rules to ISPs while the FTC monitors the rest of the internet ecosystem. The FTC has been the “cop on the beat” for decades and the FCC’s decision created a bifurcated approach in order to advance its own political clout.

Contrary to some reports, personal health and financial information is already protected under regulatory regimes created by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The FCC rule did nothing to expand these protections.

Reversing it did nothing to diminish them.

S.J.Res. 34 puts all segments of the internet on equal footing and moves consumer privacy protection back to the FTC where it is best housed. American consumers will be once again provided with a consistent set of privacy rules.

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Two new officers were sworn in to duty with the Plano police department during the city council meeting March 27.

City Attorney Tom Grant administered the oath to Sam J. Root and Matthew J. Johnson, both of whom will now receive training at the Illinois State Police Academy in Springfield.

The new officers will each earn annual salaries of $53,552, according to Police Chief Jonathan Whowell.

In other business, the council voted to spend $8,000 for a five-year street re-

pair plan.

Darrin Boyer, Public Works director, recommended Robert E. Hamilton, consulting engineers, be hired to do the street plan work. The firm said it could prepare the plan within 30 days.

The work will consist of preparing maintenance plans, preparation of plans, specifications and estimates, bids and construction work and observations, Boyer said.

Council members also authorized Boyer to seek bids for the Lathrop Park splash pad project. The estimated cost of the project is $170,000, the engineers told Boyer. The project will be completed this summer, he added.

BRIEFS Tickets available for Community Meals for Seniors program

The Community Meals for Seniors program is available for all city of Plano seniors 60 years of age and older. Seniors must register and purchase “Dine-Out” tickets at Plano City Hall during normal business hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This program allows senior citizens to purchase meal tickets for $3 each and redeem them at restaurants in Plano for a meal valued at $6.50. Participating restaurants include: Ivana’s, Tastee Bite, Dos Caminos, and Plano Cafe.

There is a limit of four Dine-Out tickets per month per participant. Tickets will be accepted at all times, seven days a week unless the restaurant is closed. Participants must show a photo ID and a Plano Dine-Out Program ID card when paying for the meal with the ticket.

The Plano High School child development classes with Ms. Deb Chatman will be setting up activity days for toddlers in April and preschoolers in May. The high school students will be providing interactive, age-appropriate interest centers for the children. Dates listed below are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There are two one-hour spots each day – 8 to 9 a.m. or 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Dates available include: Toddlers (2- and 3-year-olds) – April 10 and 12; preschoolers (4- and 5-year-olds that are potty trained) – May 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12.

A Kendall County hearing officer has recommended a negative vote on a special use zoning request for an outdoor shooting range in the county.

Wally Werderich, a special use zoning hearing officer, reviewed the request at a meeting Monday evening in Yorkville, and heard testimony from neighbors of the property on 16502 Church Road in unincorporated Lisbon Township who oppose the project.

Following the testimony, Werderich reviewed the required “findings of fact” to determine whether the special use zoning should be approved, and said the project did not meet the standards.

The project now will be reviewed by the Kendall County Board’s Planning, Building and Zoning Committee at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, at the County Office Building, 111 W. Fox St. in Yorkville. The committee then will forward its recommendation to the full County Board.

Robert Delaney is proposing a 24lane shooting range on his approximately 30-acre property. The range would have berms and be subject to 33 conditions under the special use zoning, according to information from the county. One of those conditions is that pistols will be the only firearms allowed to be used at the range.

Delaney currently uses the property for private shooting for friends and family, although residents at the meeting claimed it was being used for classes, as well.

At the meeting Monday, resident Greg Peterson, whose property adjoins the proposed shooting range site, voiced a variety of concerns, including the potential sharing of his driveway with the shooting range, noise issues, and traffic from trucks hauling material for berms on the property.

Peterson said he also was concerned about the effect of lead on a nearby pond, which he said was near his well.

Delaney purchased the property at auction from Peterson’s family.

Peterson presented a petition to Werderich that he said was filled with 45 signatures of nearby residents.

“Mr. Delaney has shown by his actions a willingness to skirt the regulations and shove this gun range down our throat,” Peterson said.

Whitewillow Road resident Joe Phillips said he was concerned the shooting range would bring down his property values and those of his neighbors. He also claimed that the current range is situated so people are shooting right at his property.

Phillips said he recently called the sheriff’s office when those using the range were shooting towards his property, and questioned the regulation of the range. He noted that a company had been advertising shooting lessons at the range.

“I think it’s kind of an open game out there,” Phillips said. “I don’t know what’s really happening.”

PLANO POLICE REPORTS Motorist crashes into business An Aurora resident, Cynthia Carrola, no age given, of the 400 block of Spruce Street, was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle after she inadvertently accelerated and it struck the front door of a business in the 400 block of South Street March 29 at 9:20 p.m. Police said the collision caused severe damage to the door of the business and to Carrola’s vehicle. Bicycle stolen A 20-inch Kent Ambush bicycle was stolen from the baseball field at P.H. Miller School in the 900 block of Lew Street March 29 at 5:30 p.m., according to Plano police. Police said the suspect was described as an African-American male who was driving a newer model pickup truck. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact police at 630-552-3121.

Arrest two on Rock St. Plano police arrested Michael J. Burt, 41, of the 700 block of West Rock Street, Plano, at his residence March 28 at 6:51 p.m. on charges of domestic battery and aggravated assault. Police said the suspect allegedly punched another household member in the face and had threatened the same household member with a firearm on March 26. Police said Burt was transported to the county jail in Yorkville pending court proceedings.

PLANO POLICE REPORTS and disorderly conduct. Police said they were summoned to the tavern on a report of a suspect causing a disturbance and acting combative towards other patrons. Police said officers issued a citation for disorderly conduct to Behrens and told him to leave the property. But police said the suspect tore up the citation. Computer scam reported A 69-year-old Plano resident told county sheriff’s deputies March 29 that someone who falsely claimed he worked for Microsoft took control of his computer and defrauded him out of an undisclosed amount of money.

On road trip to southern Illinois, Plano goes 2-1

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com Plano baseball coach John Parpet has already made the point twice this spring, so he must believe it.

Levi Campbell can play college ball.

The Reapers’ center fielder is in just his second year playing baseball, so he’s had limited experience and limited exposure.

The proof, though, is in the pudding.

Campbell was hitting .464 through nine games for the Reapers (3-7) with a double, triple, eight runs scored and three runs batted in.

Added to that, he can go get it in center field.

“Levi’s just been on fire this year,” Parpet said. “He’s got an above average arm, he plays great defense and he can just hit.”

Campbell and the Reapers went 2-1 last week in their trip to southern Illinois. They beat Steeleville and Anna-Jonesboro 6-5, and lost 6-0 to Marion.

Campbell went 6-for-9 on the trip, reaching base in all three games.

“Right now we’re working with him on bunting for hits,” Parpet said. “With his speed, if he gets one down it will be a hit. And they can’t play up on him because he hits the ball so darn hard.”

With two games, including JV, last Wednesday through Saturday, the Reapers’ pitching staff was on empty by the end of the week.

It was, though, a productive trip.

Bryson Schmidt threw 5.2 innings against Steeleville, allowing just one run and one hit with four strikeouts.

“We have to work on first-pitch strikes and a few mechanical things with him,” Parpet said, “but other than that he was outstanding.”

Will Benson, likewise, was strong against Anna-Jonesboro, going 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.

Andy Velazquez had three hits and Alec Tisberg, Campbell, Danny Nunez and Tyler Ward had two against Steeleville.

Campbell had three more hits against Anna-Jonesboro and Ricky Bruns earned a save.

“We’re doing some good things,” Parpet said. “The competition we played down there is as good or better than what we’ll see here. The difference is the guys didn’t know the teams, so they just played and expected to win.

Coming back here, sometimes there is the doubt. We’re still trying to get over that hump.”

As much as anything, the Reapers benefited by three days together on the road.

“That was the big thing, was our kids being together,” Parpet said. “Getting those kids together, six hours each each way on a bus and staying at a hotel, they bonded. We went down there to experience something outside of Plano and outside of our conference and who we usually play.”

The Reapers return to a busy week.

They lost to Morris 10-0 on Tuesday, play Streator Friday, are at Ottawa Marquette, then have a home-and-home with Lisle next Monday and Tuesday.

Senior’s swing sizzles for Yorkville baseball on spring break trip

Brendon Reifsteck knows his baseball, and he knows his bats.

When Reifsteck and Yorkville took their spring break trip last week, they got a taste of baseball history. The Foxes visited the Louisville Slugger Bat Museum and Factory, where bats have been made since 1884, en route to Tennessee.

Reifsteck has an appreciation for that history.

He previously took a trip to the Louisville museum with his family. Born and raised a St. Louis Cardinals fan, Reifsteck intentionally wears the No. 20 of ex-Cardinal great Lou Brock.

“He had the same birthday as me, too,” Reifsteck said. “I loved his speed and his mental ability. He’s one of the greats.”

Reifsteck had a pretty great road trip.

The Yorkville senior went 10-for16 with three doubles and seven runs batted in. The Foxes (8-0) went 5-0, the last four at the Daily Times Classic in Maryville, Tennessee. Yorkville scored 44 runs over the five games.

For his efforts, Brendon Reifsteck is this week’s Record Athlete of the Week.

“Our whole lineup, one through nine, just hit the ball so hard,” Reifsteck said. “No at bats were wasted.”

Reifsteck is never one to waste an at bat.

That success starts with his approach.

“He is aggressive with fastballs in the strike zone and a grinder with two strikes until he makes sure he can put something in play,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “And he doesn’t just connect, he hits the ball hard. Regardless of what pitchers throw, he has

managed to find counts where he can drive the ball.”

Reifsteck seems to speak with disdain about any at bat not ending on his terms.

“I’ve always been taught to be aggressive. You’re not up there to walk, you’re up there to hit,” Reifsteck said.

“Walks are freebies. I hate striking out, can’t stand it. If I see first-pitch fastball

I’m swinging at it.”

That attitude toward bat and ball runs hot in the Reifsteck family.

His dad played baseball growing up in downstate Lincoln and later in Freeport, his mom softball in Peotone.

It’s a split Cardinals/Cubs household, Reifsteck following his dad’s St. Louis allegiances.

“Last year, Cubs, that was a heartbreaker,” Reifsteck said.

Reifsteck’s parents got him started at a young age playing T-ball. He didn’t need encouragement to work at his craft.

Reifsteck joined the Lincoln-Way Prospects travel baseball program three years ago. Reifsteck goes to the Baseball Institute every Sunday with his younger brother Josh to hit in the cages for an hour or two. When that’s not enough, he’ll do tee work in his garage.

Reifsteck last week committed to play baseball at Wisconsin-Platteville, where he plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

Regardless of what position Reifsteck’s at, Luken likes penciling his name in the lineup every day.

“Brendon exudes a level of confidence that is a good trait, not in any way a cockiness or ego,” Luken said.

“He has confidence in his abilities day in and day out. I like the way he carries himself.”

Reifsteck likes the way the Foxes are carrying themselves.

Perfect through two weeks, they remain guarded about getting ahead of themselves. It’s a long season.

“We’ve started off great, better than ever, but we can’t stop working hard,” Reifsteck said. “Coach told us that on the bus ride going home. What we did down there doesn’t mean we can’t stop working. We’ve all talked about it, and we’re getting after it in practice this week.”

Seasoned freshman strikes out 7, doubles in a run vs. ACC

Age is nothing but a number to Kaylee Read.

Plano’s freshman pitcher and leadoff hitter is one of the youngest Reapers, but not in softball years.

Read has played travel softball for two years, first with the Illinois Thunder out of Sugar Grove and now the Seneca Irish.

She played varsity volleyball in the fall, and got a taste of varsity basketball in regionals. Softball, though, is her first love.

“I love softball, it’s my world,” Read said. “Honestly I think my parents just threw me out on the T-ball field and I’ve loved it from there.”

Read is one of the building blocks for the young Reapers’ program. On Saturday she struck out seven batters and allowed just one earned run, and doubled in a run at the plate for Plano in a 5-2 loss to Aurora Central Catholic in the first game of a doubleheader.

Plano’s other freshman pitcher, Brianna Lupa, struck out eight in Game 2 in a 3-2 Reapers’ win.

“They’re young in age, but they’re seasoned softball players,” Plano coach Dwayne Love said. “Kaylee doesn’t play like a freshman. We have four girls who play travel ball, and they stand out. They’ve seen more pitches, played more games.”

Read (2-2), who has pitched to a neat 2.63 earned run average, showed a little moxie beyond her years in shaking off a rocky start Saturday for Plano (3-6).

Aurora Central scored three runs in the first inning on two walks, a dropped ball in the infield and a two-out, two-run single. But Read only allowed one baserunner the next three innings, showcasing a drop ball with good run.

“My fastballs were a little high but I got my drops working,” Read said. “It’s a lot of stress honestly playing against girls 17, 18 years old but you have to hold your own.”

Leadoff is an unfamiliar place in the order for Read, but she looked comfortable there Saturday.

She had Plano’s only hit in an 11-0 loss to Morris on Tuesday.

“She’s a freshman, but she’s accepting the role,” Love said.
