New faces to appear in Plano government

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Plano City Council and Plano School District Board of Education will see new faces following the upcoming April 4 election.

On the City Council, Ward 1 incumbent Alderman Melody Herreid is not running for re-election, and there are two residents running for that seat: Barbara V. Nadeau and Michael Scott Wankel.

Ward 2 Alderman Robert A. Hyde faces two challengers in residents Jamal Williams and John E. Fawver.

Ward 4 Alderman Jeff Johnson is not running for re-election, and resident Thomas A. Johns is running for that spot.

Plano Mayor Bob Hausler is running unopposed for re-election to what will be his third term in office. Also running unopposed in the city election are City Clerk Kathy Miller, City Treasurer Janet E. Goehst, and Ward 3 Alderman Stephen DeBolt.

In the other race four candidates are vying for three open board seats which come with four-year terms. The candidates are Dwayne Love, Estela M. Martinez, Michael Jernigan and James A. Ward. Local school officials need to monitor the status of the budgeted monies from the state.

When the funds are delayed, school officials need to make sure they have money to cover the state allotted money. School officials need to seek the help of state representatives when funds are delayed.

What do you see as the role of technology in education?

I believe that technology can be a very useful tool for education. It opens a whole world of learning experiences. Students must be able to use technology to help keep up with the ever growing use in today’s world.

County makes bold move on development loans The Kendall County Board took an innovative step last week when they agreed to use revolving loan funds to lend money to local governments in addition to private businesses.

The county has traditionally loaned money directly to private businesses to help stimulate economic development. The downside to this method was apparent when the county lost nearly $750,000 when they loaned funds to a

Sandwich hotel complex for a project that fell through.

County officials were alerted to a change in state policy that would essentially allow the county to lend economic development funds to local governments, who could then loan the money out to private businesses.

This would permit the county to add interest to its revolving loan fund, while mitigating some of the risk of

loaning money to private businesses. It will also help out municipalities that, due to thriving economic development, have depleted their own revolving loan funds. In fact, Oswego village officials have recently approached the county about economic development loans to businesses within the village, according to Oswego Village Administrator Daniel Di Santo.

While some County Board members

were concerned about not knowing the parameters of the loans to local governments, we are confident that those details will be worked out by the board and we know that such loans will be approved by the board members.

We think this is a bold move by the county that could help add interest to the county’s revolving loan reserves and gives more tools for economic development in the long run.

The 2017 Identity Fraud Study, released

by Javelin Strategy and Research, found that $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 million U.S. consumers in 2016, an increase over the $15.3 billion and 13.1 million victims a year earlier. Clearly, the state of Illinois must act in the face of this growing threat.

The Governor’s strategy outlines five strategic goals with specific action plans to protect state operations and the personal information of Illinois residents. The goals include 1) protecting state of Illinois information and systems, 2) reducing cyber risk, 3) best-in-class cybersecurity capabilities, 4) an enterprise approach to cybersecurity and 5) a cyber secure Illinois.

These goals are being threatened by Comptroller Susana Mendoza, who is putting politics ahead of people by arbitrarily refusing to disburse funds for the implementation of Illinois’ cyber security upgrades. This is a dangerous and reckless policy. Democrat or Republican, we are all at risk of cyberattacks. For the sake of the families we represent, it is time to set politics aside and make the security of their personal information our priority.

They lost their house and had to move in with my maternal grandmother.

I’m sure that my parents were not always all work and no play but after some tough life experiences, by the time I came along and growing up in the 1950s the words of wisdom that were passed down were things like “there is no free lunch.”

If someone gives you something, there is a string attached. I can only guess what dad would have had to say about how our politicians today are so rich with six- or seven-figure speaking fees, million-dollar paychecks for providing legal advice and multi-million-dollar book deals.

Mom and dad led frugal lives and considered debt to be avoided if possible. They lost their home one time so they were very cautious and determined not to get in that position again. They would never have voted for a politician who overspent then borrowed and taxed to make up the difference. I can only guess what dad would have had to say about how our politicians today have increased our taxes to be the highest in the nation and have borrowed billions of dollars.

Dad was the strong, silent type and really didn’t say much. He would have done a “harrumph” which would have been the equivalent of you or I going into a maniacal rage of fury but in fact all we do is give it a “harrumph.”

To the Editor: Barb Nadeau is running for alderman in Ward 1 in Plano. One of the many ways in which I have known Barb over the years is when she worked at WSPY and did television interviews of local interest. I was frequently on her show concerning programs at the Plano Community Library District and I don’t know when I had ever met someone so committed to Plano and with so much knowledge of what was happening in our town. Barb will make an excellent alderman and I recommend her to all voters in Ward 1.

To the Editor: When Barb Nadeau told me she was running for alderman in Plano Ward 1, I was over the moon. I don’t know anyone who would make a better public servant than Barb.

I had the privilege to work with Barb for five years at WSPY in Plano, where she was an award-winning journalist. She continually challenged me to consider different perspectives, displaying a thoughtfulness I know she would bring to the Plano City Council. She is an independent thinker who always strives to learn more about an issue. Barb’s experience covering Plano also means she is an objective voice, unafraid to question and challenge those in charge. She will dedicate countless hours to represent the best interests of her constituents.

Set politics aside

To the Editor: This week, the Governor and the Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) announced a comprehensive state cybersecurity strategy for Illinois. As a small businessman myself, owner of an IT services company for over 25 years, I understand the growing challenges in this field and what it will take for the state to meet them.

One recent cyber data breach illustrates how real this threat is to Illinois residents. Last August, Illinois State Board of Elections officials revealed that personal information from fewer than 200,000 voters was hacked through a cyberattack of possible foreign origin. It is possible that some voter personal information, including driver’s license numbers and the

These two instances were, in point of fact, the first discoveries of bituminous coal on the North American continent. Nothing was done with the coal deposits of Illinois for more than a century, however.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, coal’s efficiency for home heating was relatively unknown. It wasn’t until 1810 that coal was first commercially mined in Illinois in mines along the Big Muddy River in Jackson County.

That year, several barges of coal were shipped down the Mississippi to New Orleans. As settlements moved further north in Illinois, coal was found near the salt-producing areas in Gallatin and Vermillion counties and as early as 1822, coal was shipped to New Orleans from Peoria.

Like the first settlements, early coal mines bordered the state’s rivers, primarily due to problems with overland shipping. Beginning in 1823, the growing city of St. Louis used coal mined from the bluffs along the Illinois side of the Mississippi.

John Reynolds, an early governor of Illinois, helped promote one of the first railroads west of the Alleghenies in order to increase the production of coal. The line’s cars were horse-drawn over six miles of wooden rails from the coal seams on the bluffs overlooking

the Mississippi River to Illinoistown where their cargo of coal was loaded on boats and shipped across the river to St. Louis. In fact, the first macadam road in the state, from Belleville to the Illinoistown ferry, was built to accommodate heavy coal wagon traffic.

By 1840, Illinois was producing 424,000 bushels of coal a year – measurement in tons was several years in the future.

Most of that early coal came from drift or slope mines exploiting easily-reached coal seams exposed along hillsides, river bluffs or stream banks.

Shaft mines were required to reach the rich veins of coal that lay John deep under the prairie Reynolds soil of central Illinois.

As early as 1842, shaft mining was taking place at Belleville. Strip mining would have to await a more advanced and rapacious generation.

By 1841, coal was hauled overland to Chicago from mines in the upper Illinois River Valley. Mines on the east bank of the river were easily accessible to boats traveling on the new I&M Canal, which, when it opened in 1848, provided a means to deliver coal to the growing city cheaper than it could be shipped via the Great Lakes from Pennsylvania.

Even before it was known that coal was a more efficient source for fueling locomotives than wood, the Illinois Central Railroad leased coal fields in the Du Quoin area in order to procure fuel for their trains when they crossed largely wood-free Central Illinois prairies. Other railroads soon followed their lead, and mines were sunk along the Rock Island’s right-of-way in Grun-

dy, Bureau and Rock Island counties.

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy located and developed coal deposits in Stark and Knox counties; the Great Western Railroad found, to its pleasant surprise, that its right-of-way crossed a large coal bed in Vermillion County.

Since railroads, mining and manufacturing were all interrelated during that era, abundant coal reserves fueled Illinois’ explosive growth in the mid1800s. Coal also helped Illinois’ farmers to become independent of wood for heating, contributing to the growth of farming on the state’s timber-scarce prairies.

The Civil War spurred the growth in both coal and steel production in Illinois. After the war, farmers and city residents alike clamored for more coal as railroads maintained a firm grip on its supply. In 1870, in an effort to get more coal at cheaper prices, a rail line, financed by local subscriptions, was built between Streator and Aurora to haul coal from the Vermillion mines.

But the CB&Q Railroad managed to seize control of the line, leaving investors worse off than they were before.

First oil, then natural gas replaced coal for heating and cooking in homes and businesses, and now electricity is replacing both of them. As a result, the days of Big Coal have passed, and the state’s once prominent part in that industry is gradually becoming little more than a historical footnote recalled by place names on maps like Coal City and Carbondale. But the time was, Illinois coal fueled a large fraction of the nation’s industry and progress into modern times.

Hearing held for woman accused of running boarding house

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A hearing was held Tuesday morning at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville on the Montgomery woman accused of renting rooms out of her single-family home in the Blackberry Crossing West subdivision.

Both the village of Montgomery and the Blackberry Crossing West Homeowners Association filed lawsuits against Catherine L. Boyd in September.

The village’s lawsuit alleges that Boyd has been running her home on Thunder Gulch Road as a “boarding house facility from said property in violation of the village’s zoning code, as well as the village’s code of ordinances.”

“Boyd consistently rents out rooms in the home and receives rental pay-

ments as compensation for the same, and advertises rooms within the property for rent on websites such as Facebook and Craigslist and upon unpermitted signs within the village’s right-of-way,” the village’s complaint states.

The lawsuit seeks a court order that directs Boyd to “cease and desist renting out rooms at the property.”

Boyd was not present at Tuesday’s hearing. Her attorney, Tim Kohn of Ottawa, said she was at home with her children.

Attorney Kirsten Casas represented the village, and attorney Nicholas R. Lange of Wheaton represented the homeowners’ association. Judge Robert Pilmer oversaw the hearing.

The next court date on the issue was set for April 24 at 9 a.m. at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville.

When it comes to the nation’s primary source of energy, coal used to be king. But during the past few years, the coal market has collapsed, and along with it virtually all of the coal companies that were once such economic giants.

Coal, which when burned emits a palette of chemicals that are harmful not only to humans but to the entire Earth, was done in by technology.

Nuclear power plants started coal’s erosion, and in recent years natural gas, solar and wind energy have both replaced the need for new coal-fired power plants.

Once upon a time – and not all that long ago – coal was used for more than simply producing electricity. When I was a lad living on a farm, I remember well my father’s morning ritual of stoking up the furnace with coal. I have heard it said by those who had to contend with coal-fired furnaces that the sweetest sound in the world is the noise a modern gas furnace makes when it kicks on early on cold winter mornings.

While we tend to think of Kentucky or Pennsylvania when we hear talk of coal mines, western states like Montana have been producing far more coal in recent years from gigantic open pit mines that have caused the death of inefficient shaft mining.

At one time, Illinois was once a major coal producer, though the uses to which coal was eventually put would astound the explorers who discovered the state’s mineral deposits in the 1600s.

President Tim Tremain gave the chairman, congressman and mayor a tour of his facility as well as a brief history.

Started in 1971, MTH Pumps has steadily grown over 40 years by providing excellent products to companies all over the world.

In addition, Tremain has continually participated in the community by taking local students and community groups on tours, providing internships

and helping to develop trade skills programs across the county.

Gryder, Hultgren and Hausler also visited Fabtek.

President Mike Chesnutt led a tour of the facility while explaining Fabtek’s long history, from starting in the 1940s in Aurora until 2009 when he took over the company.

Fabtek is expanding as demand for its stainless-steel boilers continues to grow.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, released a statement Friday afternoon on the withdrawal of the American Health Care Act, which had been scheduled for a House vote that day.

“I have heard loud and clear from thousands of my constituents that they want a health care system that is more affordable and works for them,” he wrote. “I had great concerns about this bill, and expressed many of those to Speaker [Paul] Ryan and House leadership. But maintaining the status quo is simply unacceptable.”

Hultgren continued, “Too many are paying monthly premiums higher than their mortgage. Too many Medicaid recipients who need care can’t gain access to a primary care doctor. Too many only have one insurer providing one plan in their area. That is wrong.

Doing nothing isn’t an option. We must take steps toward real health care reform that will benefit Illinois.

If the answer isn’t this proposal, then we must return to the drawing board, hold extensive hearings and figure out a different way forward.”

Plano School District 88 officials are still attempting to get bids for work at Plano Middle School that could cost an estimated $1,624,000.

Superintendent Hector Garcia said Bryan Appel, the district’s director of operations, recently met with architects who went through the school with him to determine the work needed and the estimated cost.

In his report to the board, Appel said the main 1959 section (40,000 square feet) of the school roof is in need of replacement because it has failed in several areas. The architects estimated that a new roof and soffits with a 20year life span would cost $660,000 and one with a 30-year life span would cost $880,000. Appel recommended they go with the 20-year roof.

He said the 4,000-square-foot roof system over the school cafeteria, which has a saw-tooth design, was not suit-

able for this building. The architects estimated the cost of replacing the roof with a 20-year life and the facade with a 40-year life at $550,000.

And they were told that the west side parking lot at the Plano High School is in need of a complete redesign and replacement. There was no estimate of the cost for this work.

Board members voted to have the architect prepare bid specifications for the windows and roof replacement and they were presented at the Feb. 27 board meeting. The bids were to be opened at the March 24 board meeting, but only one bidder showed up, so the district postponed bid opening until the March 30 board meeting.

Appel said he would expect to award the project at a special board meeting to be held on April 3. He reported that he is concerned the lack of bidders may drive the cost of the work up and that the cost of removing the old windows could increase the cost beyond their original predictions.

On the roof portion of the project, officials said they would release the bid documents on March 27, open the bids on April 13 and award the project at the April 24 board meeting.

​The Oswegoland Park District’s threemile Saw Wee Kee Spring Trail Run Challenge will be held in Saw Wee Kee Park on Saturday, April 15.

Runners begin the challenge anytime between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the park located along the banks of the Fox River off Sundown Lane, south of Oswego.

The soft park path should make for a great all natural run for beginners and advanced runners.

The race will conclude with a moisture wick trail run shirt and post-race chili from Pearce’s Pub and Grill.

Overall male and female winners will be announced via the park district’s Facebook page by 9 p.m.

The Saw Wee Kee Spring Trail Run Challenge is the first race in the Oswego Triple Race Series. Runners can earn the Oswego Triple Race Medal in 2017 by completing three of four athletic events hosted by the park district.

The husband of the former Kendall County Food Pantry director and the director’s father were formally arraigned on criminal charges and pleaded not guilty in Kendall County court Tuesday afternoon in Yorkville.

Kenneth Spaeth of Yorkville and William Crowley of Scottsdale, Ariz., appeared in court before Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann.

The two men were flanked by their attorneys – Spaeth represented by Edward Edens of Naperville and Crowley represented by Gary Johnson of Aurora.

Kenneth Spaeth is the husband of Maria Spaeth, the former director of the Kendall County Food Pantry, and Crowley is Maria Spaeth’s father.

Yorkville police served a search warrant on the food pantry headquarters in Yorkville and a Kendall County residence last June.

New leadership took over the pantry in August and it now has a new name, the Kendall County Community Food Pantry.

At a hearing in February, both Johnson and Edens said they would be filing motions requesting a change in venue to a court outside of Kendall County. However, Edens suggested after Tuesday’s hearing that he would not be pursuing that request.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the two men said they understood the charges filed against them.

Judge McCann said if they are found guilty of the Class 2 felony charges, they could face between three and seven years in state prison followed by two years of probation, as well as a fine of up to $25,000, or up to 14 years in prison if they are considered “extended term eligible.”

A status update on the case was set for 1 p.m. May 10. McCann approved a request by Johnson to allow Crowley to stay in Arizona and not require him to attend that hearing.

“Everyone had a great time with bowling, 50/50, turkeys (bowling strikes), food, raffles, seeing friends and making friends,” said a news release from ALR Post 181.

Cash prizes were awarded to Ed Leaf in first place, Todd Steffan in second place, and Josh Stebbins in

third place.

“Many thanks to Sandy and Bob Lawrence for coordinating the event, Sandwich Idle Hour Lanes for providing the facility, AJ Torres for providing music, the great turnout from the community, and the many businesses who donated items for our raffle,” said the news release.

Proceeds from this event will be sent to the American Legion Legacy Fund for children who have lost parents in the military since Sept.

The Tri-County Kiwanis Club recently completed its seventh annual Christmas in March Project. The members shopped and put together two baskets of groceries for 25 area families. “Christmas” presents were included for the children with help from the Sandwich VFW. The anonymous families were chosen by the pastors of local churches and school administrators. The goal of the project is to spread a bit of cheerfulness to those who could use a little boost in their lives. The Tri-County Club is a part of Kiwanis International, whose goal is to improve the world one child and one community at a time.

Travel back in time at Norway event Temperance association circa 1910 is theme of dinner theater fundraiser

By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com NORWAY – Rob Borschsenius, a board member of the Norsk Museum, was trying to think of ideas for a fun way to raise money for the museum when he came across the Norway Temperance Association’s meeting minutes on display.

Borschsenius read more than 50 years of the meeting minutes and created original music and a script based off of what he read.

His play will be featured at a dinner theater fundraiser on Wednesday, April 12. The audience will be whisked back in time to attend a circa-1910 meeting of the Norway Temperance Association.

The event will be held at the Norway Community Building, 3676 E. 2603rd Road. Doors will open at 6 p.m., a broasted chicken and pasta dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the play will begin at 7:15 p.m.

Unlike a traditional temperance meeting, a cash bar with beer and wine will be open through the evening. Tickets cost $35 and must be purchased in advance by calling 815-712-3170. Only a limited number of tickets are still available.

“The meeting minutes were interesting reading, and they were all hand-written,” Borschsenius said. “Everything in the play really happened and is based on true events.

The association had their own choir and orchestra, and we will have both at our meeting. I would call it ‘historical fiction.’ People in the audience will be involved with the play, there will be a guest speaker and the Prairie Singers will be volunteer performers.”

The dinner theater is a fundraiser for the Norsk Museum, which houses artifacts from Norwegian history and memorabilia from the area’s first settlers, including early farm tools, spinning wheels, rosemaling, bunads (traditional Norwegian dresses) and a Viking display.

The museum is closed for the season but is open for weekend tours June through September.

The museum’s building, the Hauge Lutheran Church of Norway, was constructed around 1846 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings last spring.

Landmarks Illinois for the Norway Temperance Association’s hall to be considered as one of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Buildings in Illinois for 2017.

The Norway Temperance Association was organized in the late 1870s by the Norway Methodist women.

Under the direction of the Rev. C. W. Hanson of the Norway Methodist Church, a temperance hall was constructed and was dedicated in October 1909.

The temperance hall was not only the location of the association’s meetings – graduations, basketball games, square dancing, dinners and fundraisers also were held there until 1956, when the association was dissolved and the building was sold.

The money from the sale was divided evenly to three churches in the community: Fox River Lutheran, Norway Methodist and the Latter Day Saints.

“We are hoping that the hall’s owner will donate the building to us,” said David Johnson, Norsk Museum board president. “Last year, we had a historic architect appraise the building. We would need a quarter of a million dollars to bring the hall back to its 1910 status.”

The money raised at the upcoming dinner theater would be used to restore the museum’s original plaster walls and preserve the museum’s exhibits and artifacts.

Last fall, John Maack of Chicago donated to the museum a Skagerrak Viking ship he built using Viking plans. The museum plans to build a storage unit to house the ship, which will be placed on a trailer and will be featured in parades, including the Norwegian Constitution Day Parade in Park Ridge.

“We would love to make the temperance meeting an annual event and host it at the temperance hall,” Johnson said. “We hope it will tell the story of our community’s heritage and that everyone will have fun.”

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING SYMPATHY Most people know enough to send a sympathy card, either store-bought or personal note, to a friend who has suffered a loss. The best of these expressions has some sincere sentiment behind them. Sympathy has its best effects when it is based on good communications – and communication goes two ways. For more personal acts of kindness, such as flowers or personal letters, a handwritten note is a reasonable expectation. It does not have to be long; one or two sentences will do nicely. “Thank you for your kindness. Your friendship means a great deal to me.” That is enough to let friends know that their support is appreciated.

After 41 years, Sandwich’s Idle Hour Lanes under new ownership

A game of bowling lasts 10 frames, but memories made in a bowling alley last a lifetime.

After owning and operating Idle Hour Lanes, 927 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich, for 41 years, Ron and Bonnie Miller decided to sell their bowling alley.

“It was hard to leave, but it was time to move on,” Bonnie Miller said.

“Everything has changed in the sport of bowling. Pinsetters and scoring were manual, now everything is automated and computerized. We have done it a long time, and now it’s time to retire.”

The Millers sold the bowling alley in February to the Partridge family, who also own Pinheadz Bar & Grill and Yorkville Bowl in Yorkville, Roadhouse Country Bar & Grill in Yorkville and Pinheadz Entertainment Center in Naplate. Idle Hour Lanes will be renamed Pinheadz at Idle Hour Lanes.

The idea for a bowling alley started with Bonnie Miller’s father, Wesley Scent. He partnered with Arthur Andersen to build an eight-lane bowling alley in Sandwich. Construction began in 1947 and it opened for business on Aug. 28, 1948.

A community competition was held to name the new bowling alley, with a prize of a $25 war bond. During the bowling alley’s grand opening, Mrs. Wesley Leland of Sandwich accepted the award on behalf of her husband, who had chosen the name “Idle Hour Lanes.”

In the 1950s, two additional lanes were added to the bowling alley, as well as automatic pinsetters. A locker room was added in 1964, and an addition to the front was completed in 1968.

Bonnie Miller remembers her father going to the high school football games to round up pinsetters. Ron Miller was one of the Sandwich High School students who worked at the bowling alley. He was employed there for 10 years.

In March 1972, Idle Hour Lanes was sold to Harold Jovanovich. Ron Miller purchased the bowling alley from Jovanovich in April 1976.

The Millers updated the bowling alley and added new technology through the years. A pro shop was opened in 1976, where a billiards lounge had been. In 1982, new wooden lanes were completed, and solar heating was added in 1983 and 1984.

Since the bowling alley changed hands, 15 TVs, six 112-inch projector screens, two jukeboxes, new chairs, black lights for cosmic bowling and six draft lines for beer have been added.

Changes expected in the coming year include installing new flooring, adding two rectangular tables per set of lanes and five live video gaming machines, and expanding the arcade to include skee ball and other games.

New rental bowling balls and shoes also will be offered.

“We wanted to update it and make it more modern, but we will be keeping some of the vintage aspects, like the wooden benches and the ball return above ground,” Partridge said.

The locker room will be moved near the arcade and pro shop. The old locker room will be converted into a birthday party room with a half wall and a view of the lanes.

“We plan on offering more party options and expanding our events as much as possible,” Partridge said. “We will add karaoke and acoustic live performances in the bar area. On Fridays, we will have free bingo with a rolling jackpot. On Mondays, we will offer bar trivia. Motorist caught in field after car chase

2-month-old baby found unrestrained in vehicle SHAW MEDIA Plano police arrested James L. Pheal, 38, of the 1200 block of Marshall Boulevard, Aurora, in the vicinity of Route 47 and Galena Road in Yorkville following a chase March 24.

Police said Pheal faces charges of fleeing and eluding, driving on a revoked license, resisting a peace officer and endangering the life/health of a child. He was also cited for failure to properly secure a child under age 8 in a child restraint system, disobeying a stop sign and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Police said felony charges are currently pending against Pheal.

Police said the events that led to Pheal’s arrest began at approximately 11:08 a.m. when they attempted to stop his vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of Rock Creek Road north of Miller Road. Police said Pheal continued to drive his vehicle northbound on Rock Creek Road and then turned onto east-

bound Galena Road at speeds of more than 80 mph.

Police said they stopped their pursuit of Pheal’s vehicle, but soon located it in the area of Route 47 and Galena Road where it had stalled.

When officers reached Pheal, he resisted arrest and attempted to get back into his vehicle. A struggle then ensued between Pheal and an officer.

When the officer attempted to tase Pheal, he kicked the device out of the officer’s hand and then fled into a farm field where he was eventually taken into custody with the assistance of Yorkville police and Kendall County sheriff’s deputies.

Police said a female passenger in Pheal’s vehicle was later detained and a 2-month-old infant in the front seat of the vehicle was found unrestrained.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services are assisting with the investigation, police said.

Cano sent to prison for crimes against officers Faces another trial in June

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com An Oswego man accused of threatening a massacre in Oswego in August of 2015, and shooting at police, has been sentenced to state prison for multiple crimes against corrections deputies at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Monday.

Judge Timothy McCann sentenced Taylor Cano, 26, of Oswego to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Friday morning.

Cano was sentenced for three charges of aggravated battery to a corrections deputy and one charge of possession of contraband in a penal institution. He was sentenced to five-year prison sentences on each of the four charges, but by law the charges must be served consecutively to one another, back to back, totaling 20 years, Weis said.

Cano has been in custody at the county jail since August 2015, when he was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Cano was sent directly to the Illinois Department of Corrections after the court hearing on Friday, according to Weis.

Cano, who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to all four charges on Friday, will receive mental Taylor Cano health treatment in state prison, Weis said.

Cano still will face charges of the attempted murder of a police officer from back in 2015, Weis said. That case has been set for jury trial in June of this year, Weis said.

Weis said that Cano’s actions “have put the safety of several corrections officers at risk.”

“This sentence will help to ensure that he is given the mental health treatment he is requesting while protecting the public and those assigned to guard him,” he said.

Motorist cited in hit, run County sheriff’s deputies cited and summoned Emily Lynn Little, 20, of the 3000 block of Hoffman Street, Plano, to court on a charge of hit and run in a property damage accident. Martinez, 20, of the 700 block of East Church Street, was injured March 25 at 12:26 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and it struck a utility pole in the 200 block of Creek Road in Little Rock Township, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Fight investigation County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fight that was reported to have occurred March 23 between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township. Police said a 35-year-old female was the victim in the incident.

Windshield struck An 86-year-old Riverside resident told county sheriff’s deputies that an unknown object struck his windshield while he was driving on Route 71 at Walker Road in Fox Township March 21 at 6:40 a.m. Police said the motorist believes that someone intentionally tossed something at his vehicle.

Facing interference charge County sheriff’s deputies arrested Axiry Gamino, 31, of the 3700 block of 59th Avenue, Cicero, March 21 at 3:34 p.m. in the 2200 block of Light Road in Oswego Township. Police said the suspect was charged with interfering with the reporting of a domestic violence incident. Police said the suspect allegedly attempted to prevent another female subject from calling 911 to report the incident.

Yorkville senior off to hot start at plate

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com Ally Martin’s last two softball seasons couldn’t have started any differently.

Yorkville’s senior catcher was hit in the eye taking infield before last year’s season opener against Naperville Central.

“It knocked me out, I didn’t play,” Martin said, “and we got slaughtered.”

Same opponent, far different outcome. Martin went 3-for4 with two doubles and five runs batted in for Yorkville in its 14-2 season-opening win over Naperville Central.

It was a harbinger of good things to come.

Martin was hitting .412 with eight RBIs going into this week, and added two more hits Monday in a win over Hampshire.

For this hot start at the plate, Ally Martin is the Record’s Athlete of the Week.

“She has worked a lot in the offseason behind the plate, and she’s obviously hitting well,” Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said. “She’s doing a lot of good things for us.”

Martin started last season as Yorkville’s starting catcher, but eventually a senior took the job. Martin assumed a utility role, and struggled some with the bat.

“She’s a lefty and going with outside pitches was something she really struggled with,” Regnier said. “Now that’s what she is doing best with. She’s going with that outside pitch and that’s where she’s getting a lot of her key hits. She just seems more relaxed and more confident.”

The confidence is back, for sure. To Martin, it comes down to keeping things simple

and clearing her head.

“Last year I was overthinking everything,” Martin said.

“Now I literally tell myself to see the ball, and hit the ball.

I don’t think about anything else. I have trust in my hands that I’m quick enough to get through the zone. My confidence is back.”

Martin attributed much of her improvement to hitting every week the last few months with Ernie Alvarez of ESP

Baseball/Softball Training in Oswego.

“I wasn’t keeping my weight back on those outside pitches,” Martin said. “You have to let the ball travel a lot deeper in the zone and take it to left field. He knows I have the mechanics. He’s taught me to trust my hands, to see the ball and to hit the ball.”

Martin is already committed to play at North Central College, where she plans to

major in biology or forensics.

She holds a 3.6 GPA, and plans to be a doctor, possibly in pediatrics or as an obstetrician.

On the softball diamond, Martin figured out at an early age that catching was her best fit.

She’s unique to the position, a left-handed thrower, but Martin believes it plays to her advantage.

“There aren’t that many of us, that’s for sure,” Martin said. “Most people don’t see catchers throwing lefthanded and they get freaked out. I have an easier throw down to first base. I think it’s an advantage.”

“She brings a lot of control to the game from behind the plate,” Regnier said. “She’s a good leader, and she’s good with our pitchers.”

She’s definitely strong in the batter’s box, which can be said for many of Yorkville’s hitters lately.

The Foxes have scored 55 runs in their four wins. Senior shortstop Sydney Woodworth entered the week batting .476 hitting leadoff. Sophomore Haylee Reyes came in hitting .471.

Martin, lying in the weeds hitting sixth or seventh, has been the spark near the bottom of the lineup.

“In any lineup you need that one person to break things open hitting-wise. Ally’s done that in a couple games,” Regnier said. “She’s had some really big hits to break things open.

In our lineup there’s not an empty spot right now.”

SPORTS BRIEF Cedardell Golf Course offers league packages for men, women

Cedardell Golf Course in Plano is announcing several packages to help interested individuals to afford golf this year.

The Men’s Tuesday Twilight League spring meeting will be held at 6 p.m. April 4. The league is open to the public, starts on April 25 and runs for 16 weeks followed by two weeks of playoffs.

The early league starts at 3:30 p.m. and the late league at 4:20 p.m.

Early League has two-man teams, and the Late League has four-man teams. There is a onetime $25 per person league fee, plus green fees each week that you play. If you’re interested in signing up, or have questions, please attend the Spring Meeting or call Jeff at 630-327-7808.

Ladies’ Leagues are open to the public.

There are two leagues, Tuesday mornings and Wednesday Twi-Light.

Reapers preaching patience

That was the message Plano coach John Parpet was preaching Tuesday after the Reapers’ 8-1 home loss to Aurora Central Catholic.

The Reapers (1-4) are slow out of the gates this spring. A closer look, though, gives them pause for optimism.

Plano’s led in the fifth inning of two of its losses; a third, the Reapers were tied going into the bottom of the seventh.

It’s the natural growing pains of a program still figuring out how to win consistently.

“We’re a good team. We’re just not playing like a good team,” Parpet said. “We have good players, we just need to figure things out and it usually takes us a little bit. We always start slow.”

Plano senior Tyler Ward, making his second start of the season, was hardly hit hard. He was his own worst enemy, though.

Ward walked four batters in Aurora Central Catholic’s five-run third inning that broke the game open.

The long inning drove up his pitch count, and Ward lasted just four innings despite allowing only four hits.

“I just wasn’t keeping my weight back – the ball was going all over the place,” Ward said. “I couldn’t hit that inside of the plate for whatever reason, it was floating all over the place.”

Free passes have unfortunately been a theme for Plano in the season’s early going. Reapers’ pitchers had issued 24 walks in 26 innings coming into Tuesday.

The effects are residual.

Two softly-hit Aurora Central fly balls dropped in the big third inning, hardly indicative of the kind of defense Parpet is familiar with.

Against a good team like the Chargers (5-0), it really comes back to hurt.

“When you’re walking guys, getting behind in the

count you put your fielders to sleep and they probably don’t get the jump they normally get,” Parpet said. “We cannot walk people and that’s something we’ve taken pride in the last few years is we don’t walk anybody.

This year it’s been an issue.”

Most of Ward’s pitches were left high.

“That’s usually when he’s having his control issues is he misses up,” Parpet said. “He has a long arm swing so he has a lot of moving parts that he has to coordinate. If it gets out of whack it takes a little bit to get it back.”

Plano, held hitless by Aurora Central starter Michael Bieterman for four innings, scored its lone run in the fifth.

Eric Boutin was hit by a pitch leading off and Levi Campbell singled. Boutin eventually came around to score on a wild pitch Boutin and Campbell were also part of a strong Reapers’ defense.

Campbell tracked down a ball in deep center in the first inning, and Boutin threw out a runner from behind the plate in the third. The Reapers also turned two double plays and second baseman Cristian Amezquita slickly turned a force play in the seventh.

“They’re showing signs of progress,” Parpet said.

“It’s going to have to start with us throwing strikes and making teams put the ball in play.”

The Reapers will get ample chance to fine-tune before conference play starts April 10 at Lisle. Plano plays six varsity games this week, including a trip south, and four more next week.

“You’ll start to see us pick it up,” Parpet said. “I promise you that we will be better.”

Earlville 12, Plano 8: Ethan Kee, Ward and Campbell each had two hits for the Reapers on March 27.

Plano 8, Hinckley-Big Rock 2: Bryson Schmidt struck out 10 in 4.1 innings of no-hit ball and tripled to help his cause for the Reapers on March 23.

Ward and Campbell each tripled as well and Amezquita chipped in two hits.
