Medicine policy change ahead Only nurses or administrators will be allowed to dispense medication

news@kendallcountynow.com Students in Plano schools needing medication during the school day often receive it from employees who do not have a medical background or training.

This is allowed by Illinois school codes, but the preferred practice is that it be done by a certified school nurse, non-certified professional nurse or school administrator, Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia told school board members recently.

Plano School District 88 presently has health aides at the high school, middle school and Centennial School.

They will continue through the school year, but will be replaced with registered nurses starting next fall, he said.

As of next year, administrators will dispense medications only in an emergency.

“We will make every effort to have a certified school nurse or non-certified registered nurse available in every building. The ultimate goal is to have a registered nurse available in every school’s health office to create a healthy academic climate, dispense medicines, and respond to the medical need of students,” Garcia said.

So, as of next fall, the district will have one full-time certified school nurse in the district’s Health Department from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. every school day. This person’s primary responsibility will be to oversee the Health Department services across the

Website to be revamped

In other business, Garcia said district officials began researching options for a new website design to replace the present site, which he said is “extremely outdated [with] software

features that are obsolete.”

Garcia served on a website committee along with Anand Raja, a website expert, and district principals, assistant principals, a technology director and office staff members to form a list of items they felt should be on a new website.

“We discussed logos, layouts and the general appearance we wished to portray to our audience. The process was a good one and gave us a good blueprint to pass along to the website developer,” Garcia said.

The present site is missing features that are commonplace on new websites, he said, listing easy-to-navigate menus, a contact list and an employee portal, among them.

“We were looking for a website that would be easier to update and maintain from a technology and user perspective. The website is an important communication tool for parents, families and the community. It is paramount that it look fresh and updated with current information, events and photos,” he added.

Raja spoke to many vendors and found an excellent fit at a very affordable price, Garcia said. The one-time cost is $4,010 plus minor additional costs for logo development. The annual hosting fee is $359.

“The current plans are to go live after April 15. We will be hosting training sessions to teach key personnel how to post articles and other information on the website to keep it up-to-date,” he said.

The district’s cost will be higher with professionals on duty, he noted.

The district presently does not receive state or federal assistance for this, so they will be looking for financial help through special education or federal funds to defer some of the additional costs, he said.

“We decided to go ahead with the changes because we’re seeing more and more kids needing greater levels of medical assistance. We want to be prepared for that and best practices says we should have a registered nurse or a certified school nurse in every building.

“Finding people will be difficult because they will be needed at the school only when students are present. The rest of the time they will either be without work or have other part time positions,” he noted.

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Still uncounted absentee ballots may determine the winner in last week’s Republican Party primary election for a seat on the Kendall County Board.

Voters in the board’s District 2 were asked to cast ballots March 15 for three candidates and chose Matthew Kellogg, Tony Giles and Diane Selmer. However, just 17 votes separate Selmer and another candidate, incumbent board member Dan Koukol.

The Aurora Election Commission issued a statement Thursday saying

that all eligible absentee, grace period and provisional ballots for the primary will be counted on Tuesday, March 29.

As of March 15 there were 96 ballots within the jurisdiction of the Aurora Election Commission that had not been returned. There Diane Selmer are 479 grace period and 197 provisional ballots to be counted, according to the commission.

The statement from the commission did not say how many ballots were outstanding in the Dan Koukol Kendall County portion of Aurora. However, Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette estimates her office is waiting for about 42 absentee ballots in the rest of

District 2 located in Kendall County outside of Aurora. Gillette’s office does not count ballots in the Aurora portion of Kendall County. She added that her staff was reviewing any ballots cast after 7 p.m. on election night when the polls were kept open an extra hour due to a ballot shortage.

“No person shall be provided with a daily breakdown of ballots returned to the Commission, nor shall the Commission release the names of the voters who have ballots outstanding. A count will be provided to the public on the website auroravotes.org,” the Aurora Election Commission statement said.

Last week Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner took note of the delay in the Aurora Election Commission’s results, which was spread out across the city, and

called for a referendum to be placed on November’s ballot to do away with the commission.

The Aurora City Council voted to place such a referendum on the ballot in 2010, but the Election Commission refused to do so, arguing that the issue could be placed on the ballot only through voter petitions.

“The Aurora Election Commission’s abysmal failure Tuesday night to properly provide online the election results from within its jurisdiction to the public is but the most recent example of the general incompetence of the Commission Board, as well as the staff and the Board attorney, who are collectively and individually wasting local tax dollars,” Weisner said in a statement.

“The Aurora Election Commission is a ‘one trick pony’ – and a lame one at that,” said Weisner.

Plano School District 88 Board members voted unanimously last week to hire Mechanical Inc. to install a new heating, cooling and ventilation system at Plano Middle School for the 201617 school year at a cost of $2,416,410.

“By moving forward with this project, we will be taking an important step in the long-term health of our middle school learning environment,” Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia told board members.

Garcia said the board had set a budget of $2.4 million for the work including alternates, but noted that the addi-

tional cost will not present a problem.

The bids from five firms with the alternates ranged from the low bid of $2,416,410 to $3,225,000.

At the Dec. 14 board meeting, Garcia said the cost of the project would be included in the district’s fiscal 2017 budget as well as partly paid for from fund balances.

But because the district has saved money in various areas, they expect to pay the total amount this year, he said.

The architectural firm of Cordogan, Clark and Associates of Aurora was hired at the district’s December board meeting to look at the HVAC equipment in the school. They determined that it is outdated and in need of replacement.

Bryan Appel, school district director of operations, said the system includes the original 1959 steam boiler and is a mix of several different types of heating and minimal cooling equipment.

FORUM Ballot confusion

To the Editor: The annexation of portions of Lisbon and other townships to the Charles Phillips Library was on the March 15 ballot as a referendum question. It was, however, printed in small letters on a gray background, rendering it hard to read, given the minimal lighting in portable voting booths. The rest of the ballot was black printing on a white background and although some items were in small print, they were more easily read.

As one with a vision handicap, the difficulty of reading the referendum raised questions: why was this ballot section, and only this portion, rendered difficult for the vision-impaired to read?

Referenda are notorious for manipulation. They can be so worded that careless perusal will cause someone to vote in favor rather than against. There was more than enough room remaining on the ballot to print the referendum text in larger type than the rest of the ballot, let alone normal type on a white background.

A minority of supporters of a referendum so presented as to discourage

or confuse opposing voters can rig an election outcome.

The Kendall County commissioners could do worse than inquire into the presentation of this ballot’s library referendum.

To the Editor: I would like to personally thank the 4,070 voters that chose a Republican ballot and chose to cast their vote for me, Todd Milliron. I want to say to the other many citizens in our county that chose to participate in this election, thank you.

Your participation allows our system of democracy to continue and endure, which makes it even stronger in these divisive times.

Not including the three precincts in the Aurora part of our county, a total of 29,827 votes were cast, which equated to a 45 percent voter turnout. This is a good thing because voting at the local level can be more important than voting for president at the federal level, as your vote can be the difference maker as hap-

pened in County Board District 2, where the difference was only 17 votes to make it to the November ballot.

Our local government is only as good as the citizens who choose to participate in it and then cast an informed vote accordingly; I will continue to assist in keeping our local electorate informed and providing shared knowledge.

Emma Haines Inman served as a member of the Oswego School Board, including a stint as board president, during the years before women were permitted to vote in most national and statewide elections.

Her husband, Decolia Towle, had died in December of 1847, and Emeline apparently decided to get out of Oswego where Decolia had been a successful businessman and innkeeper. Just a year later, Emeline married Roland McCloud, and probably moved back to be near her family in Kane County.

It’s likely 60-year-old Hannah Sweet purchased her 39 acres of Seward Township land in June of 1849 as an investment.

Other women purchased land either in conjunction with or on behalf of their husbands. Laura A. Caton, for instance, purchased land in conjunction with her husband, Judge John Dean Caton. The Catons put together one of the largest tracts of land in Kendall County, immortalized today in the name of Caton Farm Road.

Interestingly enough, women were able to take over for their husbands as the frontier era ended, and seemed willing and able to become successful farmers and business owners. The 1850 Census of Kendall County, the county’s first, recorded a number of widows who were carrying on for their late husbands as heads of households.

For instance, 38-year-old Maria Arnold took over for her husband, Levi, when he died in 1844. Arnold was one of the founders, with Lewis B. Judson, of Oswego, operating the first store and post office in the village. After his death, Maria became a successful farm operator. By 1850, her Oswego Township land and holdings were worth $6,000, a considerable sum for

To the Editor: In the March 17 edition of the Record Forum, Mr. Stoiber’s entry titled “Trump?

Sanders?” was rather interesting. I totally agree with him on John Kasich’s qualifications and record and that Bernie Sanders is in his own failed socialist world.

The part that showed typical Dem thinking was when he wrote about Trump not condemning the KKK and David Duke.

David Duke has his own organization and the head of the KKK endorsed Hillary Clinton. The Trump story was in the national media for days, but the Clinton story was never treated like it was worth mentioning by the national media. Where’s the outrage for her to denounce the KKK endorsement?

If the election turns out to be Trump vs. Clinton it will be the nonpolitician vs. the politician, who despite her many opportunities has accomplished nothing, other than becoming a multi-millionaire at the expense of the U.S. while she was Secretary of State.

The Dems like to say she’s one of the most qualified people ever to run for the presidency and yet not one, including her, has ever been able to list any of her actual accomplishments.

If you go back and read some of the things that were said about Ronald Reagan and the fact that he was an actor and having an actor as president was going to be a joke, etc., just maybe some people need to take a wait and see attitude about Trump. Now decades later both Dems and Repubs keep trying claim themselves to be the next Ronald Reagan.

Where’s the money?

To the Editor: Can anyone answer these questions?

Where are the state income tax monies, the state sales tax monies, the state gasoline taxes, and all the other state taxes and fees we are charged? Are they being kept in some huge vault in Springfield?

Or are they earning interest in some state bank?

If Illinois is not using these monies, then why is the state still collecting? It seems to me, that if we are not going to get anything in return, then we should not have to pay the taxes until the state gets its act together.

While it’s true that women certainly haven’t had an easy time of it during the past several millennia, it’s also true that here in the U.S., they’ve had many more opportunities to make a go of it on their own than in virtually any other nation on earth.

Women enjoyed better prospects in the United States almost as soon as it was established, although it took a long time for the law to catch up to the idea that women were perfectly capable of owning their own land, voting, and otherwise participating as full citizens.

Especially during pioneer times, the frontier was a place where single women could, if not always thrive, at least make their own way.

For some reason, many tend to view the role of women during the nation’s frontier era as similar to that of the poor women who have suffered under the Taliban and other religious fundamentalists of virtually every creed. In reality, women were key ingredients in the settlement of the frontier as it moved west from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

From the 16th through the 19th century era of settlement, women were almost a requirement for a successful settlement. They were most needed by the farmers of that era.

It was not merely a whim that his father immediately sought another wife when Abraham Lincoln’s birth mother died from disease (the dreaded ‘milk sick’). On the Kentucky frontier of that era, it really did take a couple to make a household function. Husbands were expected to do the farming and other heavy manual labor, while wives were expected to take care of many and varied household tasks – which were also heavy manual labor in their own right – ranging from raising the kids to the backbreaking job of doing the wash to tending large gardens and preserving and preparing food.

It’s sometimes claimed that women couldn’t own property during the frontier era, but that’s simply not true. Here in Kendall County, for instance, at least 22 women obtained patents on some 30 parcels of government land between 1836 and 1849.

Granted, some of these women were purchasing the land for their husbands, but others were not.

For instance, Emeline Towle purchased 80 acres in Fox Township in 1848, and it was for her own use.

the era. Meanwhile, Emeline Gaylord, 48, was overseeing a farming operation worth $2,400 in Lisbon Township while raising four children.

Over in Bristol Township, Ruth Kennedy was making the most of the 168 acres she purchased from the federal government in 1843. By 1850, the 60-year-old Kennedy and her three sons were running a farming operation worth $6,000, with Mrs. Kennedy heading up the business.

Today, Kennedy Road is a reminder of the contributions she and her family made to Kendall County history.

Not that it was easy being a woman, of course. Many traditional fields were not open to women, and women weren’t allowed to vote in most elections until the second decade of the 20th century. Oddly enough, however, even before women won the right to vote in national elections, they could hold some local elective offices in Illinois.

That’s why my shirt-tail relative, Emma Haines Inman, was able to be elected to the Oswego School District Board and serve as the group’s president even before passage of the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote nationally. Despite her electoral success, Emma wasn’t allowed to vote for president of the U.S. But that was later. We’re talking frontier life here, and it wasn’t an easy place to live. Disease and disaster were always nearby. During the horrible winter of 1831 – called “The Winter of the Deep Early Snow” by those who lived through it – Baily Hobson’s wife and his children nearly froze to death when he was forced to travel to Indiana to find food for them.

Mrs. Hobson was reduced to chopping firewood out of the ice after freezing rain and a subsequent blizzard froze the landscape – and the family woodpile – solid.

And a walk through any pioneer cemetery in the county tells tragic tales of disease and death that struck entire families. From smallpox to diphtheria to typhoid to recurrent malaria, women and their families were always at risk. In those days when a letter writer asked after the health of the person to whom she was writing, it wasn’t an idle question.

It is to their credit, then, that so many pioneer women survived and prospered despite the danger and hardships that most of them took in such graceful stride – something worth recalling as we observe Women’s History Month.

Clerk apologizes for ballot shortages

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette apologized for balloting delays that were reported during the March 15 primary election as a near-record number of voters went to the polls.

Gillette told the Kendall County Board during a meeting March 16 that she was getting mixed reports on election night concerning ballot supply.

“I apologize for any inconvenience. We did everything that we could possibly do to make sure the wait, if there was any, was short,” she said. “It kind of depended on what judge you talked to – maybe they weren’t sitting at the ballot table, I honestly don’t know, because I’m hearing one thing and people are saying another thing.”

Democratic Kendall County Board member Elizabeth Flowers asked how long some precincts went without ballots.

“I don’t have a good confirmation – some people were saying they were out of ballots, judges came back in and I asked if they were out of ballots and they said no,” Gillette said. “I was hear-

ing conflicting things. What’s being told to me is that maybe some of them were out 15 to 20 minutes. It was a long day.”

Kendall County polling places were kept open one hour past their scheduled 7 p.m. closing on election night. Earlier in the day some Democratic Party voters reported problems with their ballots.

One Democratic voter in Yorkville reported receiving a ballot that included only the federal candidates. She said election judges asked Debbie her to return to the pollGillette ing place later in the day when corrected ballots would be available.

“We did run into a situation where some precincts did run low on ballots,” Gillette said. “As soon as the judges let us know that their counts were down, we started to print more and delivered them immediately.”

Gillette said that judges and staff at precinct polling places were calling her office before they were out asking for more ballots.

“We printed them and got them out there as fast as we could,” Gillette said.

She added that the polling places do not have the ability to print ballots on-

site, but her office does have two printers from which they can print ballots.

While there may have been an issue with ballot supply, the voter turnout was near record highs for the primary. Gillette reported that 45 percent of registered voters in Kendall County cast ballots in either the Democratic or Republican party primary. In the last three primary elections, voter turnout was at about 20 percent of local registered voters.

“It is my hope that the voters continue to come out to vote in the same amount as they did this election. I hope the trend continues. I’m looking forward to this type of turnout in the future,” Gillette said.

She pointed out that this was the first election during which voters could register to vote on Election Day at their polling place.

Kendall County Board Chairman John Shaw said that he was keeping a close eye on the situation and thanked Gillette for handling the reported ballot snafu.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to clerk Debbie Gillette for my several frantic and irate phone calls to her about where in the hell are the ballots,” Shaw said. “You did a great job.”

BRIEF NHI Club at Plano High School sets spring cleanup fundraiser

NHI (National Hispanic Institute) Club at Plano High School is hosting a spring break cleanup donation drive through Savers. Funds earned will contribute to each qualifying member’s fee to attend the leadership programs during the summer, as well as the Epilepsy Foundation.

Collect any items that you no longer need and donate them. NHI will receive 20 cents for every pound donated.

Items accepted include: clothing, shoes, jewelry, accessories, linens, toys, household items, bedding and bath items, books and kitchen items (dishes, pots, pans).

Place your items in a kitchen-size garbage bag or box. A truck will be parked in the Plano High School parking lot from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, April 1, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1. Furniture, TVs and computer equipment will be accepted, but the group will not get paid for those items.

Plano couple charged with filing a false police report The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Michael C. Tumminaro, 60, with three counts of disorderly conduct and filing a false police report, and Shannon Marie Dwyer-Ridge, 46, with two counts of disorderly conduct and filing a false police report in connection with an incident at their residence in the 16000 block of Galena Road in Plano earlier this year.

according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were summoned to the Galena Road address Jan. 11 on a report of the reckless discharge of a firearm.

Authorities were initially told that a neighbor had been firing weapons in the direction of a complainant.

Following an investigation, Tumminaro and Dwyer-Ridge were both taken into custody without incident March 17. Both later posted bond and were released pending court appearances.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS to be Valium and a small amount of cannabis and drug paraphernalia while conducting a search of Svoboda’s vehicle. Svoboda was taken to the county jail in Yorkville pending a bond hearing.

DUI, drug arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Justin Ely Svoboda, 43, of the 60th block of South River Street, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle at Routes 71 and 47 March 16 at 7:37 p.m.

Police said Svoboda has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis. In addition, he was cited for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Police located more than 550 pills suspected

Paraphernalia arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Anthony F. Fremarek, 20, of the 14000 block of Colonial Parkway, Plainfield, after stopping his vehicle on Reservation Road at Chippewa Drive near Oswego for a lane use violation. Police said Fremarek was found in possession of a pipe used for smoking cannabis.

DUI among charges Sheriff’s deputies arrested Claudia Jazmine Alejandro-Rivera, 35, of the 1900 block of Burry Circle Drive, Crest Hill, after stopping her vehicle March 22 at 2:26 a.m. on Route 47 and Ament Road south of Yorkville.

Police said Alejandro-Rivera has been charged with driving under the influence and was ticketed for improper lane usage, no valid registration and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Police said they stopped Alejandro-Rivera’s vehicle after being alerted by several concerned motorists. A sheriff’s deputy observed her driving in an oncoming lane of traffic prior to stopping her vehicle.

Cannabis arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Reakwon Demon Howard, 20, of the 1000 block of Symphony Drive, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle March 21 at 10:09 p.m. on Route 30 and Gastville Street east of Oswego. Police said Howard faces charges of possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia and was ticketed for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Boulder Hill resident, Concepcion Jose Reyes, 38, of the 60th block of Hubbard Way, March 20 in the 13000 block of McKanna Road, Minooka, on a Kane County warrant for contempt of court. Police said the suspect was taken to the county jail for booking.

No charges in disturbance County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance involving family members at a residence in the 100 block of Rickard Drive in Bristol on March 18. Police said both individuals involved in the incident declined to cooperate with the investigation and there was no evidence of a battery. No charges were filed.

Turns herself in Adriana Vargas, 18, of Plano, turned herself in to Plano police March 17 at 11:21 a.m.

Police said Vargas was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

She posted bond and was released pending an appearance next month in court.

NHI (National Hispanic Institute) Club at Plano High School will be hosting the second annual Spring Vendor Fair from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 8, in the high school’s auxiliary gymnasium. The fair will help local community vendors, small business and services promote their business, while supporting local, young student leaders, who are the future community leaders.

Funds earned will contribute to each qualifying member’s fee to attend the leadership programs during the summer at Augustana College (The Great Debate) and Elmhurst College (LDZ Legislative Leadership Program). Each student in NHI Club at Plano High must

raise between $600-$800 to attend these workshops, which will prepare them as young leaders in the community.

Admission is free. Food and raffles will be available.

Plano’s Kyle Kee reflects on a memorable season

After a slow start, the Plano boys basketball team ended up having one of the most memorable seasons under coach Kyle Kee. The Reapers opened the year with a 3-6 start after an overtime loss to Mendota in the first round of the Plano Christmas Classic, but battled back to a 19-10 finish with a regional title – the first Class 3A championship in program history.

The season ended on March 8, when Hillcrest defeated Plano, 64-49, in the Streator Sectional semifinal.

“I miss them already,” Kee said just days after the season ended. “This was a great group. I can’t believe how much fun this group had all year, all the time.

A lot of it came from [senior] Dahveed McKinney. He’s the best leader. He brings people together. [Senior] Marcus Ramirez has fun no matter where he’s at. It was a very loose group. No one took themselves too seriously. It was definitely a memorable year.”

The Reapers ended up winning the consolation bracket to take 17th place at the Plano Christmas Classic in the overtime win against Morris. They ended up in third at the Interstate Eight Conference tournament, which was won by conference champion

Reed-Custer – a team Plano defeated in the regular season.

Plano ended up tied for second with Lisle and Peotone in the conference standings at 9-2. Herscher was next at 6-5.

Plano won the Class 3A Plano Regional title with the 62-52 victory over Streator. It was the Reapers’ first regional title since the 2011-12 season, when they were in Class 2A (the next season, they were in Class 3A).

“We feel like we’ve been a pretty good program, so it was only a matter of time,” Kee said. “These kids deserved it. They’ve worked so hard.”

Ramirez (team-best 15.7 points per game; IBCA Class 3A All-State Special Mention) and McKinney (7.1 ppg) were both named First Team All-Conference. Junior Elijah Maisonet (8.7 ppg) was Second Team and junior Anthony Martinez (6.8 ppg) was Special Mention. Ramirez was named Plano’s best offensive player while senior Sergio Chavez (7.7 ppg) was named the best defensive player, despite playing just 10 games this year due to an injury. McKinney was given the All-Reaper award.

Oscar Flores, Marcus McKinney and Austin Stewart are the other graduating seniors. The Reapers will also return juniors Brandon Contreras (4.3 ppg), Will Benson (3.3 ppg), Austin Walton, Ethan Kee and Jermaine Boyd.

Cedardell Golf Course in Plano announces several “stimulus” packages to help you afford to play golf this year.

Leagues: The Men’s Tuesday TwiLight League Spring Meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 5 at Cedardell Golf Club.

The league is open to the public, starts April 26, and runs for 16 weeks followed by two weeks of playoffs. The early league starts at 3:30 p.m., and the late league starts at 4:20 p.m. Matches are played each week using a 9-hole handicap. If you don’t have a handicap, one will be established for you. You can sign up as an individual (and be placed on a team), or you can sign up your own team.

There is a one-time $25 a person league fee, plus green fees each week that you play. If you’re interested in signing up or have questions, please attend the Spring Meeting or call Jeff

Dwayne Love is the new softball coach at Plano, but he certainly isn’t new to the Reapers.

Love has been an assistant coach at Plano in football, baseball, wrestling and spent one season coaching softball in the late ‘90s. He has coached 10 years of travel softball and is a lifelong resident of Plano. This is his first time as a head coach for any Reaper team.

Love is Plano’s third softball coach in five years, replacing Chris Waca, who resigned at the end of the 2015 season. He has previously coached two current players prior to this season – junior newcomer DeCora Jones and his daughter, returning sophomore Anna Love.

“For me I’ve known him my whole life, so it’s very comfortable, and I know the other girls would say that too,” Plano senior Shannon Tierney said. “He’s a dad, so if we get down, he’s going to be right there to pick us back up.”

“My whole idea of the season is fun and very positive,” Dwayne Love added. “We have to keep the lines of com-

Tierney did the bulk of the pitching last season (seven wins and 141 strikeouts) and will again this year. She will continue playing softball at the next level at Rhodes College in Memphis next year.

Last season, the Reapers finished 11-26 overall and 3-13 in the Interstate Eight Conference. Plano begins league action on April 8 hosting Herscher before the two-game series with rival Sandwich is scheduled for April 11-12.

“Every year you want to improve, and you know what? It’s sometimes easier to coach from the bleachers,” Love said. “That was one thing that was hard to do as a parent. Now, I’m the coach and I’m worried about all my girls, top to bottom.”

REAPERS BACK ON TRACK Team gets first win of the season after shutout loss in opener

The Plano baseball team sure knows how to bounce back well.

After a 12-0 season-opening loss in five innings against Oswego on Saturday, the Reapers defeated Putnam County, 5-2, in freshman Bryson Schmidt’s debut on the mound on Monday.

“They were outstanding today.

They were really good,” Plano coach John Parpet said of his Reapers.

“Hopefully, we can continue this. I think we are going to be competitive from here on out.”

Schmidt gave up four hits in five innings. Two were back-to-back in the first inning to the first and second batters, who both ended up scoring. Those would be the only runs produced by Putnam County, as Plano senior shortstop Marcus Ramirez scored the Reapers’ first run of the season in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by leadoff batter Levi Campbell, a junior center fielder.

In the third, junior first baseman Ethan Kee’s RBI single tied the game at 2 when he drove in junior third baseman Tyler Ward after he led off with a walk. Ramirez’s RBI double allowed junior designated hitter/relief pitcher Will Benson to score the run that gave the Reapers the 3-2 advantage.

Ward’s RBI double in the sixth that allowed senior right fielder Sergio Chavez to score gave Plano an insurance run. The win was a sign of good things to come for the Reapers, who also saw junior left fielder Elijah Maisonet, catcher Ricky Bruns and second baseman Christian Amezquita in the starting lineup.

Also on the Reapers’ roster this season is Carlos Martinez (No. 1 starter), Taron Jackson, Daniel Nunez, Alec Tisberber, Ryan Szypura, Donovan Cline, Isaiah Martinez, Christian Adorjan and Joseph Walker.

“This is the first year I feel this is really my program. We have 19 kids on the roster,” said Parpet, whose Reapers went 7-29 overall (3-13 in the Interstate Eight Conference) last year. “In my first year,

“You can tell we are all more comfortable this year,” Ward added. “Last year, we’d just be going through the motions. This year, we are making plays.”

The Reapers continue the season with eight more non-conference games before starting conference play on April 8 against Herscher.

The two-game league series with rival Sandwich will take place April 11-12.

“I think it’s a good year [to turn things around],” Carlos Martinez said. “Most of us have been playing together for a long time. I’m excited.”
