Council hires consultant for street repairs

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@KendallCountyNow.com The Plano City Council hired a Joliet firm March 13 to prepare estimates of repairs needed on several city streets for this year. Joseph A. Regis of Robert E Hamilton, consulting engineers, said the firm would complete the study within 10 days at a cost of $2,640.

In their proposal Regis said they would visit all locations with a city representative to measure repair areas, develop a list of possible repair methods for each area and prepare a preliminary engineers opinion of probable construction costs for each repair area. The areas proposed to be repaired cover 15,582 feet or 2.95 miles of roads.

Regis said they also would provide one revision to the repair methods and costs based on city review comments.

Council members approved the contract for the work to be done at a cost of $2,640.

The work to be done this year north of Route 34, includes 235 feet of North Street from Oak to Sears; and 535 feet from Sears to East. On West Street, the work will consist of 290 feet from Church to Grant; 460 feet from Grant to Lee, and 125 feet from Steward to Abe. Work on Hugh Street will include 275 feet from North to Clark, and 215 feet from Clark to Abe. The work will include 245 feet on James Street between Church and Prairie; 210 feet on Steward Street from Center to James; 200 feet on Kidder from Main to the dead end and Rock Creek Road to Little Rock; and 7,200 feet on Miller Road.

Work south of Route 34 includes 490 feet on Oak from Lucas Lane to Dearborn; 310 feet on Jones from Lew to Oak; 680 feet on Hugh from the dead

end north; and 1,692 feet on Jones Street between Ben and James. South Street work will cover 690 feet from Louis to Pence; Pence Street work will include an area from South Street, extending 75 feet to the south; Louis Street for 290 feet between Jones and Dearborn; and Charles Street for 550 feet between Center and West.

Work on Hugh Street will consist of 255 feet between Rock and Charles, and work on Harve Street will include 560 feet between Dearborn and Charles.

Regis noted in their bid that some streets will require a total overlay of new pavement, some will require edge or shoulder work, many will need repair of damage caused by potholes and some will require a combination of these repairs.

Hamilton said Regis has 30 years experience in preparing lists of locations to be repaired, in recommending repair methods and cost for roadways and recommending the best practices for street repairs. The actual road work is expected to be completed this year according to Darrin Boyer, public works director.

City looking to hire part-time officers

In other business, Police Chief Jonathan Whowell told the council the city is looking to hire part-time police officers. The position pays $27 an hour plus the city will provide a uniform, safety equipment and a duty weapon to use while on the job.

They are looking for officers who are presently employed as full-time sworn officers anywhere in Illinois, except for Kendall County.

Whowell said this is a full service patrol officer position which will compliment the department’s full-time sworn officers. The officers would be expected to work wherever

They hope to start with three part time officers.

“Currently, we work 8-hour shifts so part-time officers would work in accordance with our current scheduling and hours unless we need them say for only a four hour block of time.

They will be asked to work weekends and even holidays when needed but only to supplement the patrol division, not to fill in for vacancies created by weekend, day off requests or holiday off requests,” he said.

Whowell said it will be necessary for these officers to learn the geography, policies and procedures for Plano’s department along with the local adjudication information and practices. He is hoping Plano can go to 12 hour shifts in the future like many other area departments. When this happens, part-time officers would be allowed to work 12 hour shifts up to a maximum of 20 hours for the week.

The part-time officers will work in one-person cars, he added.

He said the part time officers do not accrue benefits that would be applied to their other department nor do they accrue retirement benefits from Plano’s pension program.

The $27 per hour is comparable to a new officers wage when starting as a Plano Police Officer and they will be eligible for yearly wage increases, Whowell said.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, and certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. They must be able to pass a background check equivalent to the same background check a full-time Plano officer passes, Whowell said.

Interested persons can apply at the Plano Police Department.

BRIEF Annual K-6 art show set for April 6 in Plano

The annual K-6 Art Show and Ice Cream Social will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at Emily G. Johns School in Plano. The event will feature artwork from students at P.H. Miller, Centennial and Emily G. Johns schools. Every student will have a work of art on display. Eat some ice cream, view the students’ artwork, and enter to win one of many free raffle prizes. There also will be local artisans demonstrating their skills and fun make n’ take art projects for the kids.

County to provide economic development cash to cities

By TONY SCOTT The Kendall County Board voted 5-4 Tuesday morning to allow the county to loan local governments – including the county – money through its economic development revolving loan funds.

Board Chairman Scott Gryder, Economic Development Chairman Audra Hendrix, and board members Matt Kellogg, Matt Prochaska and Elizabeth Flowers voted in favor of the measure, while board members Judy Gilmour, Robert Davidson, Lynn Cullick and John Purcell voted against it. Board member Tony Giles was not present at Tuesday’s meeting.

Those voting against the measure said they didn’t know the parameters of the loans to governments before voting on the measure.

However, Hendrix, who brought the measure to the board, argued that the measure only opened up the county to lending money to those government entities. She said rules are already in place for businesses wishing to get a loan from the county, and that any loan would have to be approved by the County Board.

Hendrix said when the county received its first money from the state for economic development loans in the 1980s, the money came with restrictions, one of which was that it could not be lent to local governments. The state has since rescinded those restrictions, she said.

“This is basically reverting back to the way we were doing it before” 1988, when the state gave the county the funds, Hendrix said.

Hendrix said that the county had recently been approached by a local government – the Village of Oswego – whose revolving loan fund was depleted

because of successful economic development projects.

Oswego Village Administrator Daniel Di Santo, who attended Tuesday’s meeting, confirmed later that the village had been approached by businesses asking for an economic development loan from the village.

“We’re thrilled with the decision that the county is willing to lend to municipalities,” Di Santo said. “Oswego has had great success with the revolving loan program. Every one we’ve had has been successful, we have many in play now. That’s also the reason we’re here, because we’ve lent out all the money; there’s not much left to lend. We do have a few projects that have expressed interest in additional loans, and since we didn’t have any, we directed them to the county. That’s when we learned that the county was interested in lending directly to municipalities to reduce their risk.”

During a discussion on the measure, Davidson said there should be a limit set as to how much money the county would loan a municipality. However, Kellogg said the measure being voted on would just change the language of the county’s revolving loan policy to allow such loans, and that the county could “hash out those details” if a local government approaches them about a loan.

Kellogg also said the measure would allow the county to access the funds in case of an emergency.

“This frees up the money so we can manage it more properly,” Kellogg said.

Hendrix said there are projects that could go forward but that their respective municipalities or other local governments have depleted revolving loan funds. She referred to a loan from the county to a hotel complex in Sandwich in which the county only recovered 10 percent of its original $750,000 loan.

Last July, three sixth-graders from Emily G. Johns School spoke to Plano City Council members about the need for a park at West and Dearborn streets. One of the three, Maya Holland, daughter of Amy and Paul Holland, told council members about the plan.

Maya said she and two other girls, Shayal Casas and Jocelyn Fran, came up with the idea recently while riding home from summer school in the bus driven by 4th Ward Alderman Jeff Johnson. She said most parks are at schools or the other side of town, adding that people should not have to drive that far to get to a park to have some fun.

Johnson said he asked the students how many of them would like to have a park in their area of town and every hand shot up. That was enough to give Maya the idea of having petitions signed in their neighborhood and then across the railroad tracks to the other side of town. And they took the petitions to a junior high baseball game where they picked up more signatures.

Maya then presented the council with the petitions and a copy of a plan for a park that had been prepared in February of 2014. She was not sure who designed the plan or how it came to them, but she said it shows much of what they would like to see at this corner.

The site is an average sized city corner lot – about 80 by 120 feet. The land is vacant on the other two sides, Johnson said. The site has been owned by the city since it was donated by a resident some time ago. It had been used as a baseball field at one time.

The plan shows a basketball court and a splash pad. The court would most likely stay, but Johnson noted that the splash pad would be eliminated because a large splash pad is being located in the park on Lathrup Street.

Other things in the plan include monkey bars, a 12 by 20 foot shel-

ter large enough for picnic tables, swings, a fun slider and play equipment for younger children. The park and all equipment would be handicapped accessible, according to the plan.

As a result of their efforts, the council recently approved the purchase of equipment for the park at a cost of $35,674 and $11,179 for a 12 by 20 foot shelter that was included in the plan Maya presented.

Tom Karpas, director of building, planning and zoning for the city, presented the proposal at a council meeting to purchase the items for the park from NuToys Leisure Products of LaGrange, Ill. The play equipment he is purchasing includes slides, a climber, and numerous other items, plus a sign that says that this equipment is for children ages 5-12. There also will be several swings and a sway fun wheelchair glider.

He said the cost does not include unloading and installing the items at the park. And clear coat and stains for the wood items, is not included along with gutters and downspouts.

But knowing how Plano people jump at the opportunity to volunteer and help each other, finding volunteers to help with the unloading, assembling and staining won’t be difficult.

“This just warms my heart to see these kids doing this. I wish more kids would become involved in things like this. It’s nice to see some positive ideas coming from them. These are future taxpayers right here,” Johnson said.

“And maybe future council members,” another person added.

Maya’s mother said she was not surprised that her daughter became involved in this. ”She’s the kind of person who wants to be involved in everything.”

Maya said she has been a member of her school’s student council for three years, and is hoping to be named to the council again this fall.

Johnson said he hopes to see more of Maya and the other two girls at city council meetings.

Council OKs buying playground equipment

To the Editor: Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Plano) sent out his recent e-newsletter, which highlighted his many accomplishments. Between his announcements of apprenticeships for young people and his announcement of the many bills he co-sponsored, was an odd picture. The latest GOP budget and attempt at eliminating the Affordable Care Act is creating a huge problem for seniors and people nearing Medicare.

The ACA had some protections for older people such as limiting insurance costs to be three times what a young person pays. There was also the closing of the Medicare “donut hole”, which saved seniors several thousand dollars a year in medication costs.

The new Trumpcare plan increases the cost of health insurance to five times what young insurance clients pay. The “donut hole” has been ignored and may be back. In other words, health insurance for people on fixed incomes is going way up. But it was the picture of Mr. Hultgren conversing with a elderly woman at a local nursing home that

was ironic. Was he telling her that the new GOP budget was cutting Medicaid, which was paying for her stay at the home? Maybe he was telling her that he hoped she had family she could stay with because if she went back to her home the new budget cut programs like Meals on Wheels which might leave her hungrier and more alone. Also, the GOP was cutting programs like heat assistance and may in the future turn her Medicare into a one time voucher so she could use her free time hunting for affordable insurance.

Mr. Hultgren was probably very sympathetic to her plight but he said the GOP budget has to increase our military budget and help very wealthy people get richer with a big tax cut. But he feels her pain.

Most survivors, however, would want to take such wishes into account.

An effective way to make preferences known to those who will be responsible for planning disposition is a letter of instruction. In addition to describing the type of funeral desired, such a letter should include personal data and assist survivors with other information they may need after death has occurred.

Since the equinox was Monday, are you in a happier mood now that it’s officially spring?

Generally, spring in Illinois is pretty much the same as winter but wetter. In fact, these March days when it’s 38 degrees and raining with a 20 mph wind blowing out of the northwest make one positively wish winter had not segued into what is purported to be a completely different season. Of course, we could look back on those balmy days of February if we get lonesome for warm weather, I suppose.

But now that it is actually spring, we can do all sorts of things. We can watch the days get progressively longer, rejoice that it’s not completely dark when we get up every morning, and watch spring bulbs turn into daffodils and other hardy flowers that mark the turn of the seasons.

And, of course, we can continue heading out front to the mailbox to see what someone felt was important enough to put a stamp or a postage meter mark on and entrust to the U.S. Postal Service.

We have noted lately that a significant portion of what we receive each day does not meet the criteria of “serious” mail.

Civic engagement offers lessons in leadership, development My journey from a newly enrolled student at Waubonsee Community College to president of the Waubonsee Community College Student Senate has been defined by civic engagement.

Involvement in one’s community is not only an important way to give back, but it is also an opportunity that widens your network, sharpens your skills and opens your mind.

During my first year at Waubonsee, I was introduced to several clubs and activities, including the Waubonsee Student Senate. I decided to run for Student Senate to gain leadership experience because I believe that if you want to positively change the world, you should start within your own community. As a student representative, I went from a senator, to vice president, to my current position as senate president.

This experience has helped me grow in many ways. With this new involvement and new responsibility, I not only developed as a person, but my network and the community I built around myself grew, as well.

As a Waubonsee Community College student, I have learned that “student” is a word that you can mold into whatever experience you seek to gain. But I have also learned that keeping an open mind is the most important part of the journey of a student, because that allows you to try new things, meet new people, and discover interests and abilities in yourself that you never imagined before.

Before joining Student Senate, I didn’t know how to format an email, I didn’t know how to properly use a copy machine, and I had never heard of Rob-

WAUBONSEE VOICES Yosemite Pinedo ert’s Rules of Order as a way to conduct a meeting. But my lessons have been about more than learning new tools and skills. I also learned how to lead a group of people in a professional and efficient manner, and I learned how to shape myself as a leader.

A huge part of leadership involves listening to your peers. The only way to truly understand your peers and what they want is to listen and be empathetic.

Practicing these skills of listening and empathy in Student Senate has helped me to keep an open mind. I also learned to delegate tasks, work efficiently within the team, and to make difficult choices and have the confidence to carry them through.

But the rewards of this experience have been many: Not only have I learned all of these skills, but I have also met many people who continue to mentor me, support me and open doors for me. Civic engagement is the thread that binds a community together, and it takes many individuals to create a strong bond. While I have learned much as a student in the classroom, I have also learned so much by engaging with the community that is built around those classrooms.

Sugar Grove resident Amanda Tracy of Food & Water Watch, said a clean environment shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

“We know the protections that the EPA offers … are intended to protect everybody’s well-being,” Tracy said. “We want Randy Hultgren to stand up for our environmental protections.”

Reed Scherer, professor of micropaleontology and biostratigraphy at NIU in DeKalb, said “climate change is a reality.”

“Scientists are skeptical by nature,” he said. “That is what we are trained to do. We do not embrace a conclusion before we have any evidence to prove it.”

Scherer criticized EPA Director Scott Pruitt and Trump for making policy decisions about the EPA that are not based on scientific evidence.

Scherer said a proposed 31 percent cut to the EPA and the elimination of NASA’s climate change research would impact the fundamental data on climate change that scientists rely on.

“Randy Hultgren is not a dumb man.

He speaks with knowledge of science,” Scherer said. “Yet, he votes in lock-step with his party. The reason I am here today is, if you believe in science, act on your belief and vote.”

EPA’s leadership has been essential to the environmental progress of the last decade.

“I have spent a career repairing environmental degradation,” Mengler said.

“I am acutely aware of the need for these protections on a local level.”

Mavis Bates, adjunct professor of sustainability at Waubonsee Community College, said she came to environmental awareness after witnessing an atomic blast when she was 12 and living in Hawaii.

“I was, and still am, filled with a sense of urgency, an awareness of the fragility of this planet,” Bates said.

Dr. Adam Cohen-Lewe, a physician, added that environmental protections are public health protections.

“Without them, we would see much higher rates of cancer,” Cohen-Lewe said. “These protections are essential.”

Allison Klein, an organizer for Action 14th District Illinois, said the EPA is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue.

“The EPA was created by President [Richard] Nixon, a wise response to air pollution levels in the 1970s,” Klein said.

“It is designed to protect all of us from dangers that we have put out of mind, so we can live our lives without thinking about clean drinking water or if the beach at Lake Michigan is safe.”

CAMPTON HILLS – About 100 people gathered outside the Campton Hills district office of U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, on March 16 to ask the congressman to resist President Donald Trump’s proposed deep cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Among them was Jeanne Neltnor of Geneva, carrying a sign with a picture of the earth and the words, “Protect what you love.”

“I’m here because we can’t live without clean air and clean water,” Neltnor said. “And to destroy the EPA – it’s going to destroy humankind. I want him to vote against these cuts. Say no and stand up to Trump and his cronies.”

Candida Kyle of Elgin also carried a sign with a picture of the earth – only her message was, “There is no planet B.” “If we do not have clean water, if we do not have clean air, if our food is not inspected, then what else is there?” Kyle asked. “We will not be able to survive these next four years. We need clean water; we need clean air. We need protected food. … I don’t want him to dismantle the EPA. We need environmental protection.”

Kyle said years ago, the Fox Riv-

er was polluted and people worked for years to clean it up.

“In a very short time, that can all come back,” Kyle said. “We cannot have that. I want him to vote against the dismantling of the EPA.” Sugar Grove resident Tabitha Elzer, with her 9-month-old daughter Maxine, said she joined the group because she wants a safe environment for her daughter to grow up in.

“I want to prevent budget cuts for the EPA,” Elzer said. “It should be about the good of the people, not just money.”

As during recent protests at Hultgren’s office from Indivisible Fox Valley and other groups, those driving by honked and waved their support.

In an email, Hultgren did not respond to constituent concerns about cuts to the EPA. Instead, Hultgren’s email stated the president submitted his budget request for the American people to see where his budget priorities lie.

“As we continue to write the budget and follow through with the appropriations process, members will have their chance to weigh-in on the priorities that matter for our constituents,” Hultgren stated.

The event also included six speakers, who all spoke with a bullhorn to be heard above the wind and traffic.

I would like to give back to my community and help shape the future of Plano for generations to come.

I am seeking re-election to continue representing the citizens of Ward 2.

To make a difference in our community and to secure a positive environment for the next generation.

I have the integrity, experience and knowledge of city government which makes me the most qualified candidate proven by my successful 8 years. I don’t talk about getting things done - I do them! For example: the Rob Roy Drainage District: I did my homework and was able to prove LWS wasn’t in the district. Lakewood Springs SSA: I pushed for results every month until it became a reality. Both of these resulted in saving LWS homeowners hundreds of dollars! Finally, an agreement is in place for the Ryland townhomes roads to be completed.

My opponents both hold positions on the HOA board and I feel it’s a conflict of interest to wear both hats and effectively carry out Aldermanic duties in representing the constituents of the second ward.

What differentiates you from the other candidates running for alderman?

My extensive years of volunteer service, and my involvement in our community, set me apart from my competition.

I believe my military experience gives me the focus, discipline, drive and integrity that is required to move Plano forward. My family has loved Plano since we moved here in 2007. I have three daughters in our public-school system and I am an invested homeowner in Plano. I will always put the interests of Plano first, not just for now, but for future generations.

I would bring new ideas to the council as well as skills that I have developed in my work for a Fortune 50 company.

What project or projects would you like to see the city accomplish over the next four years?

I would like to see façade improvements to local businesses. We need a major push towards bringing in new businesses to the City. And last I would like to see more focus on community development, expanding current events and adding new events that bring us together and raise extra revenue for the city.

We need to cut spending, increase business and finish the parks work that has been committed to this year.

The current five year street plan needs to be updated and re-implemented.

While the roads continue to deteriorate this plan is not being utilized. I’d like to see a 5-year Parks plan with citizen input to focus on city-funded senior and youth programs.

I’d like the city to active pursue bringing businesses and restaurants to the second ward. There is a lot of open land and opportunity in this ward. We just need the right people at the table to foster profitable agreements to allow and attract long term relationships with potential clients.

Respond to tavern fight

County sheriff’s deputies responded to a fight involving five female subjects inside a tavern in the 300 block of South Church Street in Millington in Fox Township March 18 at 11:23 p.m. Police said three of the combatants experienced minor injuries in the incident. Due to a lack of evidence or valid witness accounts, none of the individuals involved were willing to sign complaints and no arrests were made.

Garbage can stolen

A garbage can valued at $100 was stolen from a residence in the 15000 block of Line Road in Seward Township near Minooka March 13, county sheriff’s deputies were told Monday.

License violation

County sheriff’s deputies arrested Melissa Fae Lewis, 39, of the 700 block of Suzanne Street, Sandwich, after stopping her vehicle for speeding 75 mph in a 55 mph zone on Galena Road at Jones Road in Little Rock Township March 20 at 8:34 a.m. Police said Lewis has been charged with driving on a suspended license.

Property damage reported

County sheriff’s deputies took a report of criminal damage to property at a residence in the 1000 block of West Jones Street in Little Rock Township March 20. Police said someone broke out the window to a garage at the residence.

DUI among charges

County sheriff’s deputies arrested Matthew B. Anderson, 48, of the 2700 block of Avalon Lane in Montgomery after the vehicle he was driving south on Eldamain Road in Bristol Township left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole March 18 at 9:58 p.m. Police said Anderson was transported to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police said Anderson faces charges of driving under the influence and driving while license revoked. In addition, he was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Juveniles arrested

County sheriff’s deputies arrested two female juveniles after stopping their vehicle for an equipment violation on Route 126 at Schlapp Road in NaAuSay Township March 18. Police said a juvenile driver of the vehicle was found to not have a driver’s license and in possession of alcohol. The juvenile passenger was also found to be in possession of alcohol. Both suspects were transported to the County Jail in Yorkville and were later released to guardians.

A 16-year-old girl from Plainfield was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the area of Walker Road and Arbeiter Road in unincorporated Na-Au-Say Township south of Oswego March 14, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection at approximately 4:58 p.m. for a report of a single-vehicle car accident where the vehicle struck a utility pole.

Police said when deputies arrived, the driver of the car, a 16-year-old female, was being treated for her injuries by Plainfield paramedics.

The passenger, identified as Alyssa Smith, 16, of the 2000 block of River Bend Lane, Plainfield, was located in the vehicle and transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet by Plainfield paramedics, where she was later pronounced dead, according to Sheriff’s police.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash with the assistance from Illinois State Police.

Plano police are investigating the theft of multiple political signs from yards on the north side of the city. Police said a reported was filed on March 13 at 9:13 a.m. that signs were taken from the 700 block of James Street. Motorist injured

A Plano resident, Laura Gomez, 24, was injured March 17 at 8:31 a.m. when the vehicle she was driving left the roadway on Rock Creek Road and Schomer Lane and went down an embankment, causing damage to her vehicle, according to

Plano’s Unified team takes second at state

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com Dalton Cline plays baseball at Plano, and might do football next fall. His favorite sport is basketball.

This school year, Cline was part of an athletic experience that goes beyond the court and field.

Cline, a Plano sophomore, was part of Plano’s first-ever Special Education Unified basketball team. The program partners general-education students like Cline with special-education kids.

“It’s breaking down barriers through athletics, getting all the kids in the community to come together and ignore their differences,” said Will Brown, head coach of Plano’s Unified team.

They made quite a memory in the process.

Plano’s Unified team took second place to Thornton in the IHSA’s first-ever Special Olympics Unified State Championship this past weekend in Peoria.

For their efforts, the team of DeJuwan Howard, Ohagie Watkins, Connor Orin, Richard LaCoco, Joey Oidtman, Dalton Cline, Jason Jimenez, Ernesto Rosales, Art Padilla and Robert Luckey are the Record Athletes of the Week.

“It was fun meeting new people,” Cline said. “I actually liked it. To be honest, I didn’t know if it would be fun but I actually loved it. They were fun to play with.”

Unified sports have been going on in other states, but it was new this year to Illinois.

Four out of the five general-education players in Plano’s program also played for Brown in the Reapers’ football program.

Plano held two practices a week, and played five regular-season games.

The connection didn’t stop there.

Brown said the general-education kids now stop by his classroom all the time to say hi to their teammates.

“It was an amazing experience, something I’ll never forget,” Brown said. “Realistically, in the world in general, people put that wall up. It was special to see these kids not even pay attention to that, to work really well together and become such a good team.”

Cline didn’t think his special-education teammates would be as talented as

they were on the court.

“I talk to them a lot more now,” he said. “They’re fun, they’re goofy. Sometimes they can be annoying but it’s OK. I love to play around with them.”

Plano won its regional at Metea Valley, beating the host school. Eight teams total advanced to state, grouped in two four-team brackets by their finish at regionals.

Plano beat Princeton in the semifinals to advance to the final against Thornton. The state tournament was played at the March Madness Experience inside the exhibition hall at the Peoria Civic Center, outside of Carver Arena.

“Just having the opportunity to take them down to state and play in a championship bracket, and play for a state

championship, there was nothing like it,” Brown said. “It was pretty sweet.”

Winning the regional, and going to state, has spread awareness of the program around school. Students from both Plano and Yorkville participated on the Unified team, but they are all students at Plano High School.

The IHSA is also offering Unified soccer this spring.

“Everybody’s realizing now that this is an IHSA event. I’ve had kids come up to me asking me to join the team next year,” Brown said. “The word has spread quickly. That’s the best thing is seeing more people want to get involved with it. This will hopefully help them get involved with special-education kids and we can keep growing from here.”

Plano softball gets 1st win SOFTBALL

Alyssa Dolan is apparently a fast learner.

Plano hasn’t had a pole vaulter in about five years, but the Reapers’ sophomore hurdler/sprinter learned it in practice.

The next day, Dolan took second in the vault at the Reed-Custer Invite, clearing 6 feet, 7 inches.

“The great thing I’ve noticed is her toughness,” Plano coach Brad Kunz said. “She doesn’t back down from anything.”

Dolan is one of the top athletes this spring for Plano’s girls track team, which goes 21-deep. Kunz, who previously coached the Reapers in 2012 and 2014, is taking over both Plano track programs this spring. Plano opens outdoor season with a home meet on March 28.

Dolan could be in competition before that.

Her 9.81 55-meter hurdle time is 17th-fastest in Class 2A indoors, which could qualify her for the Top Times Indoor Championships this weekend at Illinois Wesleyan. Dolan also is expected to run in Plano’s 400, 800 and 1,600-meter relays, running leadoff.

Dolan hasn’t lost a hurdles race yet indoors.

“She’s just a great, versatile athlete, probably our best athlete,” Kunz said.

“We’re hoping that she will qualify for indoor state.”

Plano looks particularly strong in the sprints.

Seniors Brielle Tucker and Daisy Mendoza went one-two in the 60-meter dash and one-four in the 200 at ReedCuster, Tucker taking both events in 8.54 and 28.9 seconds, respectively.

Tucker will also do the long jump.

“They’ve both brought a lot of leadership to the program,” Kunz said.

“They are really gifted with a lot of upside.”

Another senior, Jazreil Hill, will run the 100 and 200, and be Plano’s high jumper. She cleared 4-8 at ReedCuster, tying a personal best.

Raven Russell, another senior, decided to come out for track after playing soccer most of her high school career. She’s running the 400 and 800, and took third in the 800 at Reed-Custer.

“She has a really good kick,” Kunz said. “She has to learn the races but she’s doing really well for indoor competition.”

Two freshmen, Alyssa Smith and Kelsey Edwards, are strong additions for the Reapers. Edwards took third in the 400 at Reed-Custer with a 1:09.52 personal best. Rachelle Gomez is Plano’s top distance runner.

“Our distance crew is starting to grow,” Kunz said. “We’ve added a couple runners there to help us out. That’s what you need to do to be successful.”

It turns out, the Reapers’ senior seems an unofficial assistant coach and resident mathematician.

“Me and [Plano] coach [Brad] Kunz, we text every day how we can score points,” Adeoti said. “Track is not just about winning the race. It’s about being successful as a team. I learned that from my brother. A point here, a point there. It’s a lot of math.”

Adeoti hopes it adds up to a big finish at the state meet in Charleston.

Adeoti, seventh in the 100-meter dash and anchor to Plano’s runner-up 800 relay in Class 2A last spring, is the headliner in a deep group of Reaper athletes out for track.

Kunz, also Adeoti’s football coach, is back for his third stint coaching the Plano track team.

“We are really deep this year, probably the deepest I’ve ever had,” Kunz said. “Boys and girls both, we probably have around 90 kids signed up.”

That depth showed at the Comet Invitational at Reed-Custer Saturday, where Plano swept the boys and girls team titles.

Adeoti got a late start to track because of basketball, but he’s made up for lost time. His first time out, Kunz said he ran the fifth-best time in Class 2A in the 55 and 200. He recently tweaked his hamstring, but still ran Plano’s 1,600 relay at Reed-Custer.

He’s clearly an anchor to Plano’s team, and just for his swift feet.

“The biggest thing about Izzy, besides his speed, is he just understands track and how it works,” Kunz said. “I can talk to him about putting people in events. He’s very intelligent that way.”

He’s also surrounded by a boatload of talent.

Junior Mauricio Perez and senior Jeremiah Murff, Adeoti’s 800 relay teammates at state, have both been slowed by injuries indoors, but their absence has allowed Kunz to cultivate some younger runners.

Ryan Jernigan, unbeaten in the 800 this spring, has been around 2:05 and Kunz thinks he can flirt with the school record 1:57.

Plano’s Israel Adeoti (2083) ran the last leg of the 4x200-meter relay as Plano came in second place with a time of 1:28.60 at the IHSA Boys State Track Finals held at Eastern Illinois University O’Brien Stadium Charleston on May 28.

Sebastian Esparza and Michael Marshall join Adeoti and Jernigan as returners from last year’s state-qualifying 1,600 relay, although Marshall is recovering from a shoulder injury in wrestling. Junior thrower Alex Gonzalez has thrown the shot put in the mid 40s.

Two up-and-comers are sophomore Christian Graham, who’s already over 20 feet in the long jump, and freshman Kevin Dixon.

“I think he has a huge future ahead of him in track,” Kunz said of Dixon.

“We threw him in the 400 and first time out he ran it in 55 seconds.”

Adeoti is targeting the school record of 10.83 in the 100, and he’s already run 10.87 his second meet indoors.

He said he’s already running faster this season, with good reason.

“It’s my work ethic. I never take days off,” Adeoti said. “A do a lot of squats, a lot of deadlifting, eat a lot of proteins. I work a lot with [Aurora Flyers] coach Tom Boatright. Once you get to track season, it’s really all

about running as fast as you can.”

Adeoti also hopes his running gives a little more exposure to his future school.

Adeoti in February signed to play football at North Dakota. His college coaches don’t mind a bit that he’s running track.

“They love that I’m staying in shape,” Adeoti said. “I don’t think any coach would rather have you sitting around. Hopefully if I do well at state it can help put North Dakota on the map a little more.”
