‘Capstone’ students honored

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com After nearly three years of intensive work, 18 Plano High School students became the first graduates of the school’s AP Capstone program. Also recognized were the newest inductees into the program.

Karen Franks, AP Biology, AP Research, Honors Biology, and Biology Teacher, and Jessica Dellorto, AP Capstone Seminar Teacher, introduced the students.

“We, the students, Jessica Dellorto, and myself, have worked together to navigate the beast that is AP Capstone.

I love this class because I love to learn and I have learned a lot while guiding them through this course and their research projects,” Franks said.

She noted that the students spent much time researching intriguing things to find unanswered questions, or a gap in the current knowledge. They then set out to answer those questions using surveys, interviews, meta-analysis, and content analysis.

Some of their projects included how school start times, peer influence, and class size affect academic success; how playing an instrument affects reaction time; how AP classes affect the amount of sleep students get and their anxiety levels; how the idea of beauty has changed over time; and numerous other projects just as interesting as these.

“My hope is that they take what they have learned, build upon it, and help solve the world’s problems, making a little piece of history,” Franks said as she presented Plano High School’s pioneer Capstone varsity scholars.

High School Principal Eric Benson noted that it all starts at home for the students.

“When they come through our doors every day, they give us their very best,” he said. “We talk about all the success at Plano High School whether it’s ACT scores going up every year or whether it is the increased AP classes.”

He said Plano was one of the first 17 schools out of the 450 in the state, and the only one in Kendall County to have the Capstone program. “This is definitely a college level opportunity for our students.”

Benson said there were only 5 AP classes in the school when he started and before Dr. Hector Garcia was named superintendent five years ago.

“Now we’re over 28 AP classes which gives students the opportunity to do college level course work at the high school level,” he added. He noted that without the vision Garcia brought to Plano the school would not have continued to grow.

Benson said they are receiving help from the community doing their research projects and said many members of the community were in the audience tonight to help the students celebrate.

For the student selection process, the initial list of recruits was determined by enrollment in honors and AP courses, student’s current GPA, and overall rank as well as how they scored on a written essay and an interview with the selection team.

He said most of the students went into this wide-eyed not knowing what they were getting into. “And many of

the teachers were not sure either, but they knew it was the right thing to do for their students because they could do it,” he added.

He said this was the third year the students accepted the Capstone challenge, just like they accepted the AP challenges. “If students want to accept these challenges the staff will do all possible to help them attain it,” Benson said.

He noted that Dr. Garcia said the top 20 universities and colleges in the nation are looking for students like Plano’s Capstone graduates to be among their next list of best students.

Threats investigated at pair of Plano schools SHAW MEDIA Plano police and Plano School District 88 officials are continuing their investigation of threats of violence found written on the walls at Plano High School and Plano Middle School in recent days.

Police reported that on March 6 a threat was observed written on a bathroom wall at Plano High School.

On Wednesday, March 8, police said another threat of violence was found located in the girls’ locker room at Plano

Middle School.

Police described the message as indicating “a threat of violence towards the school.”

Police said they and school officials are investigating both incidents.

In a statement issued March 6, police said they are in contact with school officials to insure the safety of all students and faculty.

They ask anyone with information in reference to the threats to contact the Plano Police Department at 630-5523122.

AU says it will lay off 30 from faculty at spring semester’s end

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com AURORA – Aurora University is planning to cut 30 full-time faculty lecturers and 15 administrative staff members due to a lack of state funding resulting from the continuing budget impasse, a spokesman said.

The problem is the state stopped funding $6 million in annual Monetary Award Program grants, which help some 1,500 students, university spokesman Steve McFarland said.

As the state is in its second year without a budget, no MAP grant money has come to the university for its students, McFarland said.

The university pledged to make up that gap for each student who qualifies for the MAP grant, because they “should not be burdened by a political stalemate,” McFarland said.

“The last couple of years caused us to cut more and more from our operating budget,” McFarland said. “It’s not just faculty; we’ve had a number of administrative staff who have also been let go and positions eliminated. We’ve had salary freezes, and, finally, we just could not overcome the effects of Springfield any more.”

The school’s officials told 30 full-time lecturers that they would be cut from the private

university’s staff at the end of the spring semester. McFarland said the faculty lecturers are on year-to-year contracts, as opposed to assistants and full professors who have longer contracts.

“We told them in February, so they can plan accordingly through the end of the semester in early May,” McFarland said. “What we then did, though, was identify teaching assignments and teaching needs and offered a different title of visiting professor … and offered that contract to 17 of them.”

The university’s students were promised $6 million per year and – for many years – the state fulfilled that 100 percent, McFarland said.

“Given the current stalemate, we are unhopeful that anything will happen,” McFarland said. “We are afraid the program will go away in its entirety.”

The money is generally dispersed through the university for students who are promised a certain amount of money from these grants, he said.

McFarland said this is the first time in 15 years the university was forced to take action like this.

Aurora University is a private, four-year school with about 5,000 students across all its campuses, and 200 faculty, McFarland said.

A lawyer for a sexual abuse victim of Dennis Hastert said she’ll depose the former U.S. House speaker after he’s released from a federal jail, according to the Associated Press.

Kristi Browne represents a former Yorkville High School athlete who is suing Hastert for breach of contract in the hush-money pact that led to the Illinois Republican’s downfall.

Browne said March 8 that no settlement has been discussed.

Her client, now a married father, argues he kept his end of the bargain to keep quiet about Hastert’s misconduct when he was the wrestling coach at YHS in the 1970s. Hastert paid him $1.7 million. The man says he’s owed $3.5 million.

The 75-year-old Hastert is due for parole in August. He’s serving a 15-month sentence for illegally structuring bank

withdrawals to avoid reporting requirements.

In sentencing Hastert last April in federal court in Chicago, Judge Thomas M. Dunkin, also required that Hastert undergo sex offender treatment, serve two years of supervised release after his time behind bars and pay a $250,000 fine to go to a crime victims’ fund.

In his own statement, Hastert admitted that he “mistreated” some of his YHS athletes and said he was “deeply Dennis ashamed.”

Hastert “I am sorry to those I hurt and misled,” Hastert said. “What I did was wrong and I regret it.”

When the judge asked whether he sexually abused one wrestler specifically, Hastert said yes, the AP reported.

Hastert left teaching and coaching at YHS in 1981 following his election as a state representative representing the Kendall County area. He was elected to Congress in 1986.

He was elected Speaker of the House in December 1998. He left Congress and retired from politics in 2007.

Plano residents and city council members are concerned about a 7,000 foot deep well proposed by Menards for their site on Eldamain Road. Scott Nuttelman, Menards real estate representative, fielded numerous questions from the aldermen during a Committee of the Whole meeting following the council meeting on Monday night.

The water will be mixed with a non-hazardous chemical by Menards to treat lumber it uses and sells for building construction. He said the process is expected to create 100 new jobs. Nuttelman said the plant is estimated to cost $10 million and will generate an estimated $500,000 in property taxes annually.

Two residents who live in the area of Menards expressed concern about the proposed well taking water from the much shallower wells that supply their homes with water. He said the well will be private and be used only by Menards for their treatment plant. It will take water from a separate aquifer that is separate from all other wells in the area, so it will not affect the shallower wells that supply the residents, he said.

Nuttelman said it will be considered city

property, so if it ever causes problems, the city can turn it off. If Menards discontinues using the well at any time, they will cap and seal it, Nuttelman said.

Alderman Bob Jones asked if Menards would be willing to build a retail store in Plano.

Nuttelman said they are always watching the growth in the area. When asked about light from the well site shining outside of Menards’ site at night, he said it will not produce any more light than what is there now.

He also was asked about future growth at the site and said Menards will no doubt expand its uses here which could increase traffic at that time. But nothing at the well site will have any impact on traffic, he added.

Nuttelman said they have three other identical treatment facilities operating in Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The plant will be operated on two shifts each day and will be busier during the construction season, he said.

Mayor Bob Hausler said they want the city’s water superintendent and public works director to make periodic inspections at the site.

The agreement will be changed to include the items discussed and presented for approval at a future city council meeting.

Safety shoulders will improve access to Silver Springs When it comes to roads in Kendall County it isn’t nor should it be all about motor vehicles. That’s why County Engineer Fran Klaas should be commended for seeing to it that four-foot-wide safety shoulders will be added to Fox Road between Yorkville and Plano as part of a $1.5 million maintenance project set for the road this summer.

According to Klaas, the project will include resurfacing the road between the Fox Lawn subdivision at Poplar Drive west, past Silver Springs State Park, to Fox River Drive and the in-

stallation of those four foot wide safety shoulders.

Klaas correctly noted that in addition to the motor vehicles, many cyclists, walkers and runners use Fox River Drive from Yorkville to reach Silver Springs. Installation of the safety shoulders should make it safer for those non-motorists using the road and make it easier for motorists to pass them.

Ultimately, one day we would like to see a trail extended to reach Silver Springs, one of Kendall County’s most important recreational and natural

area assets. But that day is likely decades away – if it ever happens. The addition of the safety shoulders will, in effect, help bring Silver Springs a tad closer to Yorkville and its growing population of cyclists, runners and walkers.

This event is the sixth annual St. Baldrick’s event/assembly at Plano High School. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. For our pioneer ancestors, March finally offered the first real evidence of spring on the prairie.

As the days slowly lengthened, the additional daylight was welcomed after our Native American and white pioneer forebears managed to get through the deep winter months of January and, especially, February.

While snow was still frequent, the amounts were far less (at least in general; the occasional March blizzard still blew up out of the northwest) than in the preceding two months, and what snow did fall tended to melt much faster than it did weeks before.

Some Native American traditions named March’s full moon the Worm Moon. Others called it the Crow Moon, while others referred to it as the Sugar Moon.

Each of those names is descriptive of an important part of Native American life.

The Worm Moon refers to those longer days and sun-thawed ground, with the occasional warm night that persuade earthworms to crawl out of their burrows for the first time. Even Native Americans used nightcrawlers and red worms for bait on the fishhooks they received in trade. And I suppose their ancestors used them on the bone hooks they fashioned in the centuries before white fur traders arrived as well.

Also in March, crows are noisily busy foraging among the unlucky animals that failed to live through the long winter. The retreating snow cover annually reveals this bit of spring bounty for the noisy and surprisingly intelligent birds, as well as the other scavengers who make up Mother Nature’s cleanup crew. A gregarious and social bunch, crows are not easy to dismiss, and their noisy congregations during this early season before true spring arrives undoubtedly gave the month’s full moon its alternate name.

And finally, the Sugar Moon name is a reflection of another of Mother Nature’s annual gifts, the rising of maple tree sap. Clear, watery, and nearly tasteless, maple sap can nonetheless be processed into about the only sweet that existed before Europeans arrived in North America. For it was the Europeans who brought the industrious honeybee to these shores.

When the buckets were full of sap, they were taken to the sugaring camp where they were dumped into large tanks assembled from animal hides. The sap was dipped out of the holding tanks and poured into the 12 iron and brass kettles ranging from 12 to 20 gallons in size the group used.

Fires were kept burning under all 12 kettles around the clock, and during a month’s time, 1,900 pounds of maple sugar and 36 gallons of maple syrup were produced.

As you might guess, the process was pretty labor and materials intensive.

Ex-Oswego man shoots daughters, wife Woman had worked for county; teen girls had attended OHS

“I just shot and killed my children,” Randall Coffland is heard saying on a 911 recording. “And I shot my wife.

At a news conference Sunday, St. Charles Deputy Chief David Kintz released the 911 tapes in addition to chilling details about the deaths of 16-year-old twins Brittany S. Coffland and Tiffany S. Coffland at the hands of their father.

Randall Coffland, 48, and his daughters all were found with single gunshot wounds to their heads in a condominium at 450 S. First St., St. Charles, where he lived with the girls, Kintz said.

His wife was taken to Northwestern

Medicine Delnor Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Sunday, Kintz said.

The girls would have celebrated their 17th birthdays Tuesday, Kintz said.

Randall Coffland and the twins were living at the South First Street address, while Anjum Coffland was living separately from her husband in another condominium on South Fifth Avenue in St. Charles. Kintz said he did not know how long they had been living apart.

Prior to 2015, Randy and Anjum Coffland lived on Highview Court south of Mill Road in Oswego. According to Kendall County property records, they bought their Oswego home in 2002.

Anjum Coffland served as a deputy county recorder in the Kendall County Recorder’s Office in Yorkville from September 2013 to September 2015, County Clerk and Recorder Debbie Gillette confirmed Tuesday.

Brittany and Tiffany Coffland attended Oswego High School until December of 2014, according to information provided Tuesday by School District 308.

Newark’s public library reopens after renovation

By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com NEWARK – Brandon Sullivan of Newark visits the library every other week with his two children to select movies and books to take home. After not visiting the library last week, he arrived this week to find an entirely renovated library.

“The renovations are really nice, and everything just seems better,” Sullivan said. “The library feels more modern and new. The new carpet is much more durable, especially with my two kids running around, and everything is a lot more opened up.”

The Charles B. Phillips Library, 6 N. Jackson St. in Newark, closed for interior renovations on Feb. 13 and reopened Feb. 27. A library open house to celebrate the renovation will be held sometime in April.

Changes during the renovation, which cost approximately $25,000, include a new shade of paint and new carpet flooring. A new custom-built circulation desk, which cost approximately $10,000, is expected to be installed March 23. The library will be

closed for the day during the desk’s installation.

Other additions to the library include a new toilet in the bathroom, a copier, a quiet sitting area and shelves with wheels that can be moved when needed for extra meeting space. The DVD and computer areas were rearranged and the direction of the library stacks was changed from horizontal to vertical.

“With the renovation, the library feels more open and modern,” Library Director Lynette Heiden said. “The library feels bigger, less boxed in. People have been excited about the changes.

Usually, we average 40 to 50 people per day. Since we reopened, we’ve been averaging 80 people per day. The phone has been ringing off the hook.”

The library began as a Mothers’ Club for area women in 1924. In 1961, Charles B. Phillips, a local-born printer and farmer, donated $20,000 to fund the construction of a library building.

The Charles B. Phillips Library held a dedication and open house in June 1962.

When the Friends of the Library learned that the library board could not afford a new floor, they donated $10,000 toward the purchase of carpeting.

“As the Friends of the Library, we support our library any way we can,” said Rita Smith, president of Friends of the Library. “Through donations over the years, we saved money. When

“Newark is all about community,” said Barb Sucich, treasurer of the library board. “The library is so important to our small town. Families visit the library together and children stop in on their way home from school. In Easter, we have the ‘Egg Hunt with the Bunny.’ In May, we host the high school students’ art show and we have the pork chop barbecue on the Fourth of July.

“My hope is that when we’re all done with the renovation, everyone will come into the library and take a peek,” she said.

The library’s renovation process started in January, when the library board planned the purchase of a new circulation desk.

“The current circulation desk used to be at the old Sandwich Library in the 1950s and is held together with tape,” Heiden said. “The library started getting dingy looking, and we needed an update, something to change the look.

The flooring had never been changed and the last time the walls were painted was more than 20 years ago.

“The renovation started with the new desk, then we decided to paint the back room, then paint the entire library, then add carpet flooring,” she said.

During the January meeting, the library board also decided to update the library building by painting the walls, changing shades from a pale yellow to the more modern “greige,” a shade between brown and gray.

The library’s tile flooring, original to the building and installed in the early 1960s, began to chip away. With no extra tiles and the floor becoming increasingly damaged, the library board also discussed purchasing new flooring, but they did not have enough

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville doctor accused of molesting his patients will be going on trial again sometime this summer for another five of his many charges.

Dr. Haohua Yang appeared in Kendall County court March 10 with his new attorney, Robert Motta of Aurora, before Judge Timothy J. McCann.

Yang, who lived in Naperville but practiced in Yorkville, is facing multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse related to accusations that he assaulted female patients at his Yorkville practice. Yang is being held without bond at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

McCann found Yang not guilty of one count of criminal sexual assault in a bench trial in January. A bench trial is decided by a judge and not a jury. This next trial would be on the remaining five charges related to another victim in the case, officials said.

One gun was in the vicinity of Randall Coffland; the other was found in a closet, Kintz said.

Evidence technicians found a single bullet casing in the vicinity of each victim, Kintz said. A single bullet injured both of Anjum Coffland’s legs, he said.

“The weapons are still part of our investigation … to determine where the weapons came from. He did have a valid FOID card,” Kintz said, referring to the firearm owner’s identification card that gun owners are required to have.

“We have no indication of a struggle, other than the violence of the crime with gunshots,” Kintz said.

“As far as I know, there was nothing strewn about to show there was a fight.

The coroner will have to take a look at that on Monday.”

Following a discussion between Motta, First Assistant State’s Attorney Nemura Pencyla, and McCann, it was decided that a trial could most likely start in August.

Referring to the Haohua Yang length of time from now until the start of the trial, McCann noted that Yang is being held in jail without bond. Motta said he would be filing a motion to modify bond for Yang.

“We have to figure out what brought her back to the apartment,” Kintz said.

Police do not know what, if anything, triggered the chain of events, and investigators plan to talk to friends and others who knew the family, Kintz said.

“We don’t have anything at this point,” Kintz said. “That is part of the follow-up – we have to talk to people and determine what led to this. … This was a tragic and horrific event. Three lives were lost, and another was injured. First responders have also had to deal with the aftermath of this event, and our entire community mourns the loss of the victims.”

Kintz said that although the shootings still are under investigation by both his department and the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, the official causes of death will be determined by the coroner.

Investigators also are in consultation with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Kintz said.

Randall Coffland did not have any previous history of domestic violence, Kintz said.

Police were called to the Fifth Avenue address about a month ago for domestic trouble, but there were no charges, Kintz said.

Seek info in home invasion Plano police are continuing their investigation into a home invasion that occurred in the 300 block of South Cook Street March 8.

Police said a male African-American subject made entry into the residence through an unlocked door. Police said the suspect was described as being approximately 25 to 30 years-old, of average build, and dressed in dark clothing with a hooded sweatshirt.

Police said the suspect displayed a black handgun to the victim who was at home along with two children. The suspect took cash and other items before leaving the residence through the front door at approximately 11:48 a.m.

For Don Davidson, a calling that goes beyond basketball

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com Don Davidson offers a dry laugh at a question he’s likely asked often.

What does 50 years in coaching mean?

“I don’t know, you’ve got to be around a long time,” said Davidson, who just completed his fourth year as coach of the high school program at Yorkville’s Parkview Christian Academy – his 50th overall. “I think I still have a lot of fire for the game.”

Davidson will be 72 in three weeks, yet the calling to mold young Christian men is still in the blood. So is his love for basketball. He’ll be in Peoria this weekend with his 10 grandchildren to watch the state finals.

Few have Davidson’s perspective on the game.

He played baseball and basketball at Minooka, and at Illinois Wesleyan where he graduated in 1967. He’s coached non-stop since he was 22.

Davidson spent 10 seasons at Yorkville High School, coaching the varsity the final six (1971-72 through 1976-77), posting an 82-73 record. He followed that with 31 years at Aurora Christian, retiring from coaching there in 2008 after 549 wins.

The move to Aurora Christian felt like a higher calling to an athletic program he started. He’s come full circle to a program similarly in its infancy.

When he first came to Parkview Christian, Davidson coached a middle school team for three years. His first year he had a team of nine boys made up of third to eighth-graders.

Davidson started four freshmen on the varsity team the first year, three the next year. The Falcons have gone 45-51 in four years.

Parkview Christian boys basketball coach Don Davidson just completed his 50th year of coaching basketball. Davidson coached the Yorkville varsity from 1971-77, and spent 31 seasons at Aurora Christian as Athletic Director and boys basketball coach.

Parkview only has 40-some high schoolers - most of the school’s 300-plus enrollment are younger kids - but 16 of the 40 or so play basketball.

Just like at Aurora Christian, Davidson is basketball coach, AD, teaches Bible and history and serves as Dean of Students.

“I do exactly the same thing here,” Davidson said, noting “I don’t have quite the energy 40 years later.”

Maybe not, but Davidson holds big plans.

The Falcons currently play their home games at Helmar Lutheran Church in Newark, but that could change soon. Parkview in July plans to purchase the entire Club 47 Fitness facility on Countryside Parkway where its upper campus is currently housed.

An approved member of the IHSA, Parkview hopes to be a full member within two years. Davidson thinks his team will be pretty decent next year with 6-foot-4 Jake Angelo and 6-2 Josiah Finnestad and Stephen Brennwald.

Parkview, part of the Illinois Christian Conference, played Mooseheart this year, and Davidson would love to get Aurora Christian on his schedule.

“I’m going to call them,” Davidson said.

Davidson wants his kids to love basketball, “a great game.”

What he takes most pride in, though, has nothing to do with dribbling or shooting.

“I want to have a part in kids coming to Christ, to help a Christian boy develop into a Christian man and then hopefully a husband, maybe a dad,” Davidson said. “That’s the reward in coaching. The wins and losses, nobody remembers them anyway. People will remember how you helped them develop into a man of God.”

Seniors Martinez, Hupe leading 5 starters back

Dwayne Love is already ahead of the game. The longtime travel softball coach is starting his second season in the Plano dugout as head coach. That continuity helps, and so does numbers.

The Reapers return five starters off a 10-23 team, and Plano’s program is up to 32 kids from 24 last year.

“It’s been exciting,” Love said.

“Starting last year not fully understanding, now I feel I have a better feel for how this works. Just by practice it looks I have a promising team.”

The Reapers go eight seniors deep, starting with Hannah Hupe in center field and Ashley Martinez returning at third base. Hupe is healthy after missing most of basketball season with a knee injury.

“Hannah covers a lot of ground, she’s done a really nice job coming back from injury,” Love said. “With Ashley we’re looking to build on what

sports@kendallcountynow.com Plano has done a lot more losing than winning throughout its program history, but looks to be on the verge of breaking through. The Reapers return seven seniors this spring, including captains Bradi Gann and Demetra Phylactos from a 3-15-1 team.

“The girls are a tight-knit group with great team chemistry,” Reapers coach Valerie Pelizza said. “Our record from last year does not reflect our growth throughout last season.”

Plano suffered a substantial loss on the scoring end, as top scorer Arienna Accidentale graduated.

“She will be a tough player to replace, but there are a few girls that are willing and able to step up and fill her shoes,” Pelizza said. “We have three freshmen playing at the varsity level this year and that brings a different dynamic.”

Those freshmen include Aimee Hild, Yali Chavez and Lili Fernandez.

“Aimee comes from a soccer background and understands the game,” Pelizza said. “Yali and Lily both are athletes that understand the sport and are excited to be playing at the varsity level.”

Eyeing breakthrough season They will look for leadership from Gann and Phylactos, as well as sophomore Lexie King, who was an all-conference selection a year ago.

Phylactos moved to outside back last year and will remain in that role.

“It was tough at first because it was different, but I definitely enjoyed it by the end of the season,” Phylactos said.

“I’m looking forward to helping guide my team.”

Gann will be relied on for scoring.

“She will play up top as a forward this year and we believe that she will create some scoring opportunities,” Pelizza said. “Her dedication to sports and academics makes her a great role model.”

Gann likes the makeup of the team.

“I think I’ve built my skills up this year and should be able to get some good shots off and help my teammates,” she said. “We’re excited. We’re feeling pretty good about the season.”

King is expected to pair with Hild to provide a strong foundation for that all-important back line. King took on a similar role last year. “[King’s] understanding of the game and her work ethic make her the player that she is,” Pelizza said. “Playing on the back line last year, her teammates felt confident with her backing them.”

Madison Brown and Brittany Strause are both returning from knee injuries, joining fellow seniors Grayce Gatza, Maria Hernandez, DeCora Jones and Constance Brogniet. Brogniet, from Belgium, is one of two foreign-exchange students on Plano’s roster.

Plano starts its season March 20 at Putnam County, with its home opener the next day against Aurora Christian.

“I’m looking for the girls to build on what they started,” Love said. “They are all hard-working girls.”

Yorkville’s junior is a typical giggly teenager when she walks into the wrestling room for practice.

“But when we start wrestling, the switch comes on,” said Oster, Yorkville’s wrestling coach. “She’s a girl that likes to compete.”

McKenna, indeed, means business.

At the first-ever girls state tournament sponsored by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association in Springfield last weekend, McKenna took second in the 122-pound weight class.

McKenna pinned all three opponents at sectionals to reach state, then pinned Mascoutah’s Eve Slago in 49 seconds and Larkin’s Cassandra Brother in 2:48 to reach the finals.

There she lost a 10-0 decision to East Peoria’s Randi Robison.

For her achievement, Kerigan McKenna is the Record Athlete of the Week.

“My first two matches were good matches. That last one, I think I underestimated her,” McKenna said. “She got me on two good moves. The third period I kept trying to turn her, but she was stronger than I expected.”

McKenna is no stranger to the state experience.

She’s won Illinois Girls Folkstyle State Championships two of the last three years. McKenna, who transferred to Yorkville from Naperville

Yorkville junior Kerigan McKenna took second place at the Illinois Girls Folkstyle State Championships this past Saturday.

North this year, went 13-2 in JV matches. She also got in two varsity matches.

“She’s not one to shy away from competition,” Oster said.

It’s easy to see why.

The McKenna triplets – Kerigan and brothers Sean and Quinn – started wrestling with the Waubonsie Wrestling Club when they were 6. Sean now wrestles at Marmion, Quinn at Naperville North.

Their dad, Robert McKenna, wrestled at Naperville Central.

He passed along wrestling to his daughter, but that’s not all. He also showed her the basics in boxing since she was little.

During wrestling season, she goes to wrestling practice until 5:30 p.m., goes home to eat, then heads to Pache-

Ko Boxing in Aurora for practice from 6 to 8 p.m.

McKenna had her first bout in November, winning by technical knockout, and will be competing in the Golden Gloves Tournament in April in suburban Cicero.

“I’ve been trying to get more [bouts],” McKenna said. “Wrestling and boxing, they’re both aggressive sports. Other than that there’s not much similarity.”

McKenna also practices judo, and with high school wrestling season over plans to take up jiu jitsu.

McKenna last year earned a spot on the Illinois/USA wrestling team. She traveled to Las Vegas, Texas and North Dakota.

She’s beaten a wrestler who made

news this month.

Mack Beggs, a 17-year-old transgender boy from Texas who had been taking testosterone for well over a year, was thrust into the national spotlight after winning the girls state title.

McKenna wrestled Beggs in 2015 in Fargo, North Dakota.

“It was when [Beggs] had started taking the testosterone,” McKenna said. “At the time I had no idea [he] was doing that. I just thought of it as a normal match. I wrestle boys all the time. Everybody was talking about it for a while. It was cool that I beat [him].”

McKenna admitted to being scared about the move to Yorkville from Naperville this year, but she liked the fit.

Interest in girls wrestling has taken off the last two decades. Since 1994, the number of girls wrestling in high school has gone from 800 to well over 11,000, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Oster had a girl that wrestled for him at Lockport go on to the Olympics, and has had other girls wrestle for him at Yorkville. McKenna had wrestled with Yorkville’s Brett Stauffenberg and Justin Harnes in kids’ club.

“I like how they’re more into wrestling here at Yorkville,” McKenna said.

“At the scrimmage for wrestle-offs, the people from the school come out to support wrestling.”

BOYS BASKETBALL: CHICAGO HOPE ACADEMY 60, NEWARK 46

PEORIA – Will Clausel’s basketball story at Newark came full circle, an arc that losses in his last two games couldn’t break.

Clausel’s uncle, Tracy, starred for the Norsemen in the 1970s. Clausel, older brother Jack and lifelong neighbor and teammate Steve McGrath were kids who grew up following the 2011 Newark state championship team.

Clausel appreciated the chance to be at the other end.

Almost three full sections of Peoria’s Carver Arena was a sea of Newark blue for two days, there to support Clausel and the Norsemen.

“I wish our season could have ended like theirs did in 2011,” Clausel said, “but like coach said in the locker room there’s little kids that are looking up to us like we were looking up to those guys. It’s nice to be a part of it. Hopefully in a few years there will be another group down here and we’ll be cheering them on.”

The Norsemen took home the program’s second state basketball trophy, although it wasn’t quite the one they aspired toward. Chicago Hope Academy beat Newark 60-46 in the Class 1A third-place on Saturday.

Clausel, a second team All-State selection by the Associated Press, and fellow senior Cameron Myre both scored 19 points for Newark, who led 29-28 at halftime. But the Norsemen (286) couldn’t overcome Hope Academy’s sizzling 61.1 percent shooting. Newark made just two field goals in the third quarter after its hot start.

All-Stater Jordan Doss led Hope Academy with 20 points, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

“We didn’t want to come home with fourth place, but the important thing is we got here,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “Basketball is a funny game. (Hope Academy) hit two outside shots (in the semifinals) Friday. Today was a different story.”

Hope Academy and Newark were not strangers. Newark’s 2011 team beat Hope Academy in a sectional final at Mooseheart en route to the state title.

This was Hope Academy’s first state appearance.

“I’ve always had respect for that Newark program,” Hope Academy coach Antwon Johnson said. “We’ve always wanted to get to the level that they’re at.”

One of the 2011 Norsemen’s key players, John Avery, is now a volunteer assistant at Newark. He put this group’s accomplishment in good perspective.

“Every kid in Illinois starts their season wanting to play in Peoria,” Avery said. “After the Annawan loss (in February) I had people telling me this team should just be worried about getting out of regionals. They have a lot to be proud of.”

Both Newark and Hope Academy struggled through cold shooting in the

semifinals. Both broke out early Saturday.

For the Norsemen, Myre hit his first four 3-point attempts, and Clausel scored seven in a first quarter that saw Newark shoot 54.5 percent. It was tied 18-18 after a quarter, and Clausel’s two free throws sent Newark into halftime ahead 29-28.

The Norsemen never led again after Doss’ 3-pointer to start the third quarter.

“I wasn’t necessarily feeling it in warmups, but I was definitely feeling it in the games,” Myre said. “I just really didn’t want to lose.”

Newark didn’t lose too often the last four years with seniors like Clausel, Myre and McGrath, going 96-29.

Tollefson put the ball in Clausel’s hands as a freshman point guard, and he ran with it. That faith was not lost on the Newark senior, who finished his career fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with over 1,600 points.

“A lot of coaches wouldn’t have done that for a little freshman, but he trusted me,” Clausel said. “We did some special things.”

Clausel’s immediate future is on Newark’s baseball team, a sport he laughed he hasn’t played since “pony league.” Basketball is in his future, too, a college decision he expects to make soon.

Newark will return starters Dylan Patrick and Beau Brown next year, as well as sixth man Corey Jacobson.

Tollefson won’t forget his seniors.

“I can’t say enough about these guys. They’re etched into my heart,” Tollefson said. “I just love these guys like they’re family. They’re disappointed now but years from now they’ll look back on this with fondness.”

‘Perfecting the process’ Reapers return virtually entire team as rebuild continues

When John Parpet arrived at Plano four years ago as baseball coach, the program was in poor shape. The varsity only had 11 kids. The Reapers were potentially not fielding a team.

Parpet’s had the same group of kids for now four years, and that first group of freshmen are seniors. Plano’s progressively got better. Now the program is up to 46 players total.

The Reapers’ slogan is “perfect the process,” and they’ve stuck with it.

“I don’t think our 11-22 record last year is indicative of where we have come from,” Parpet said. “We’ve loaded up the schedule pretty good, and when we’re backed up we just don’t have the numbers in our pitching staff.

When our games are spread out, we can play with anybody.”

Parpet has his whole team back again, and with it a full pitching staff.

Carlos Martinez, Plano’s No. 1 starter for now four years, struck out 53 batters in 68 innings last year while pitching to a 4.12 earned run average.

Tyler Ward, Plano’s other top starter, struck out 68 in 56.2 innings and posted a 3.09 ERA. Ward’s been moved around to several positions to take advantage of his athleticism, settling in at right field while not pitching. He hit .317 last year with five doubles, three homers and 15 runs batted in.

“Tyler constantly finds ways to get it done,” Parpet said. “It’s been fun to watch Carlos’ development. He throws a two-seamer that cuts, a four-seamer.

If he had any type of run support, his record would be much different. That’s what we’ve struggled with is scoring runs. We just could not hit quality pitching last year.”

Danny Nunez hit .294 for the Reapers last season, but more important is his glove at shortstop.

“He’s the one that really shored up our defense,” Parpet said. “He has soft hands and a quick release, and he’s just got stronger.”

Will Benson, a senior infielder and pitcher, is Plano’s top bat back after hitting .368 as a junior with five doubles and 17 RBIs. He’s penciled in to bat leadoff.

Center fielder Levi Campbell, who runs scored last year, has tremendous hit .297 with five doubles, five triples raw ability despite standing just 5-footand two homers with 13 RBIs and 22 8.

“He can be incredible tracking down fly balls,” Parpet said. “We have some trees by our baseball field and this summer he hit a ball over those trees. His hand, wrist and arm strength is just amazing.”

Others returning with experience include senior catcher Ricky Bruns, senior second baseman Cristian Amezquita (.293 last year) and seniors Ethan Kee and Alec Tisberger, who will compete for time at first base.

Bryson Schmidt, brought up as a freshman, can throw it in the lows 80s with a strong curveball.

The Reapers open their season Saturday at Oswego, and will play eight games before a trip south to Murphysboro, Anna-Jonesboro and Marion.

The focus during Plano’s rebuild has been on the journey.

The results, they’ll come.

“We can’t control wins and losses, we can’t focus on that - what we can control is perfecting the process,” Parpet said. “How do we practice, how do we behave. The kids have bought in.”
