Plano Police Chief Jonathan Whowell with records clerk Theresa Bagg, who was honored recently for her 30 years of service with the Plano Police Department.

news@kendallcountynow.com Theresa Bagg was recognized by Plano City Council members during the Feb. 13 city council meeting for having served 30 years in the records department of the Plano Police Department.

Her present position is records supervisor and secretary to Chief Jonathan Whowell.

Mayor Bob Hausler presented her with a plaque in front of a packed council chambers. The audience included many police officers and their friends who were there to see two fellow officers be promoted and to see Bagg be honored.

Bagg said she began her career as a part-time dispatcher.

“When I started we had a chief, sergeant and three patrolmen. The sergeant at that time worked the regular patrol shift. We’re a lot busier now than we were then,” she said.

The department now has 20 sworn officers and Bagg has a full-time and part-time person working for her.

“When I started it was a part-time job that went full-time right away. It was not something I had ever thought about doing. I guess Harry Haggard, who was the sergeant at the time, saw something in me that I did not see so I’m still here today,” she said.

She has worked for three chiefs – Dennis Harris, Steve Eaves and Chief Whowell.

Bagg said the station was at James and North streets until the present building was built in 2012. She said the most interesting part of her job is the people she meets in her work.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes and a lot of growth in 30 years. It has been really interesting,” she added.

In her present position, she does not deal with the public as much as she did during her earlier years on the job. The biggest and most welcome change in 30

years was the new building, she said, adding that it is much larger, more secure and more professional than the original station. “I appreciate the city allowing me to work here. I enjoy the people and citizens I come in contact with,” she said.

Bagg said she lived in Arkansas for a few years where she was a dental assistant. When she returned to this area, she looked for work and was hired by Sgt. Haggard.

“I liked it and have stayed here since,” she said. “But if I had not started here, I probably would have continued as a dental assistant.”

Other than three years in Arkansas, she lived in Newark until she was 18, then Plano, and Sandwich where she presently lives.

She said Haggard retired several years ago, but he serves on the Police Pension Board. “I deal with him there because I clerk for the board,” she said.

Retirement is not in her immediate plans.

“I’ll be here for at least five more years and probably longer. My husband is deceased and I have two children in college,” Bagg said.

In other news, Chad Tuymer was hired by city officials as a new employee in the Water Department and introduced to council members by Hausler.

He will answer to Darrin Boyer, director of Public Works and Water Reclamation.

Boyer said Tuymer will be responsible for distribution, maintenance and water production.

“He will be an instrumental employee in the development of a new water meter program,” Boyer said.

Tuymer was hired because of his experience as a pipe-fitter involved in the installation and repair of numerous water and water reclamation facilities, Boyer said. He is a graduate of Sandwich High School and lives in Yorkville with his wife and three children.

His salary was set at $36,149 by council members at their Jan. 23 meeting.

Online survey underway on new PHS principal; deadline to fill it out is Monday

Parents, students and staff members in Plano School District 88 can now have a say in what they think the traits, abilities and other characteristics should be for the next principal of Plano High School.

The district is now conducting a high school principal survey on the district’s website at plano88.org. The deadline to complete the online survey is Monday, Feb. 27.

Board of Education members recently voted to replace Principal Eric Benson and move him to a different position in the district, which has not been determined yet.

Earlier this month, Superintendent Hector Garcia told board members the district expects to present a recommendation for a new principal to the board for approval at the March 20 board meeting.

The new principal would start work on July 1, Garcia said.

Defense asks to move trial Attorneys say coverage of food pantry case will sway jury

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Attorneys for the two men accused of stealing from the Kendall County Food Pantry in Yorkville told a judge Tuesday they will be asking that the case be moved out of Kendall County.

The attorneys also objected to allowing photographs and audio recordings of the court proceedings, which Judge Timothy McCann overruled.

Kenneth Spaeth, 55, the former treasurer of the pantry and husband of the pantry’s former director, Maria Spaeth, and William Crowley, 77, Maria Spaeth’s father, are accused of stealing between $150,000 and $200,000 from the pantry’s coffers, according to law enforcement sources. Both men appeared in court for the first time Tuesday morning in Yorkville.

Aurora attorney Gary Johnson represented Crowley and Naperville attorney Edward Edens represented Kenneth Spaeth during the hearing. Representing the prosecution was Charles Colburn of the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Special Prosecution Unit, who was assigned to the case in July by a Kendall County judge.

Edens told McCann he would be filing a request for a change of venue, and Johnson said he would be filing the same request, asking that the proceedings be held outside of Kendall County.

Johnson had filed an objection to an “extended media coverage”

request from WSPY radio. The circuit’s extended media coverage policy allows for the audio recording, photography and videography of court proceedings. The media outlet that files the request with the court is then designated as the coordinator for all media outlets who wish to use audio, photography or video.

Edens argued that such media coverage would taint the potential jury pool, and that it would impact the Spaeth children, that the situation was “very painful” to them and that such coverage would cause “damage to their psyche.” Johnson agreed with Edens and said there was “no reason” for photographs or other media recording of the case.

However, McCann disagreed, stating that the Illinois Supreme Court has determined that such media coverage should be allowed unless for a specific reason.

Johnson said Crowley’s home is in Arizona, although he has a place to stay in Illinois, and asked that Crowley be allowed to travel to and from Arizona. He said his client has a March 15 court date in Arizona related to the case and is out on a $25,000 bond.

Colburn said he would be fine with booking and processing Crowley here in Kendall County, with a recognizance bond of $25,000, with the understanding that the Arizona courts would forward its bond to Kendall County.

McCann agreed on the recognizance bond, which is simply a written promise that he would appear in court in the future, and to allow

Crowley to travel so he can make his Arizona court date.

A future court date for arraignment for both men was set for March 28 at 1 p.m. at the Kendall County Courthouse.

Yorkville police served a search warrant on the pantry and a rural Yorkville residence June 1 of last year, following reports by pantry volunteers of suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the pantry’s accounts, according to police. A week after the police search, Kenneth and Maria Spaeth resigned from their positions at the pantry. On June 21, Maria Spaeth was found dead in her vacation home in Lake Holiday of a prescription drug overdose, according to DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

A Kendall County judge appointed a special prosecutor to the case in July. State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who previously served on the pantry’s board, said he could be called as a witness in the case.

In September, the Yorkville police handed over their completed investigation to Colburn.

Indictments were returned by a Kendall County grand jury in January for charges of felony theft against both men. Spaeth was arrested at his family’s home in Lake Holiday, and Crowley was arrested at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to police. Both are out on bond.

New leadership took over the pantry in August and it now has a new name, the Kendall County Community Food Pantry.

A trial will soon be set for one of several charges against the man who allegedly shot at Oswego police officers and threatened a massacre in Oswego in August of 2015.

Taylor Cano was scheduled to appear before Judge Timothy McCann on Feb. 15 but was not present for his hearing. He is currently being held without bond at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Cano’s attorney, Public Defender Victoria Chuffo, as well as Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis and First Assistant State’s Attorney Nemura Pencyla appeared before McCann.

“I was advised by court security at about 8:58 this morning that Mr. Taylor Cano Cano had declined to be transported this morning, so they have not attempted to force him to come here this morning,” McCann told the attorneys.

Since he was taken into custody, Cano has been accused of multiple incidents involving corrections deputies, which have added to the charges he was originally jailed for. Those original charges include attempted murder. Other charges now include possession of a weapon or tool in a penal institution, aggravated battery to a peace officer, and aggravated assault of a corrections or probation officer.

During the Feb. 15 hearing, Chuffo said she had met with Cano the day before and that Cano had requested a continuance, or delay.

“He was asking that we continue the case for a few weeks,” Chuffo said. “He’s in the process of talking with his brother and his father about the situation.”

McCann asked if he could get a trial date for the charge of possessing a weapon in jail.

“Is there a reason why we can’t get a trial date on something so we can get an end date in mind?” he said. “Because at this point we continue to languish without any real direction.”

Weis said his office was ready to proceed with a trial but that it was up to the judge.

McCann asked what date Chuffo was looking at as a next hearing date. She said March 1.

“If I set March 1, I would tell you that on that date I will set something for trial,” he said. “You need to discuss with Mr. Cano that something is going to be set, and if he chooses to not participate on that date, then I will deem that as a waiver of his right to be present. I would prefer to have him here, of course; we’d all prefer to have him here.”

McCann set Cano’s next hearing regarding a trial for 9 a.m. March 1, with the potential for a jury setting on March 8.

FORUM Same insurance as Congress?

To the Editor: Sen. Mark Kirk said after his stroke and 54 sessions of therapy that the average citizen would have probably received four or five sessions versus what he received. The Republican Party has had years to come up with a health plan to replace Obamacare but they sat on their behinds and did nothing until Mr. Trump got into office. Then they start touting the same old stuff about cross state lines for insurance, as if insurance in Podunk somewhere will give you a big savings compared to what you already have. Do you honestly believe these companies are that inept? Vouchers, let’s cut Medicare and Medicaid. Speaker Ryan, boy are you naïve.

So I’ll propose a solution to your problem, and I’ll challenge our congressman, Mr. Randy Hultgren, to come up with an answer. How about giving the citizens of this country the same – I repeat – the same insurance you enjoy at the same cost. After all, aren’t you supposed to be our employees? Waiting for an answer, Mr. Hultgren.

Sheriff’s program worth it

To the Editor: I heard that the Kendall County Sheriff’s Department was housing out-of-county inmates, and the county was receiving funding for this program. So instead of listening to the rumor mongers, and the Chatty Cathys, I put in a FOIA request to the sheriff’s office to see how much revenue this was actually generating.

First off I need to thank FOIA officer Dee Fuchs for responding to my request and fulfilling it quickly and professionally. (I was very impressed.) Also a big thanks to those men and women who work in the county lockup. I also had heard that the out-of-county inmates were creating havoc and injuring guards. My request was for the total revenue brought in during the months of October, November and December of 2016. I also wanted to know the work comp. injuries sustained by correctional guards, and if the inmate(s) that created the injury were local Kendall County inmates, or inmates from other counties.

The results were great for the taxpayers. The total revenue generated with Sheriff Baird’s program for the months of October, November and December was $251,310 – minus $14,023.44 for

The U.S. Navy no longer deploys battleships, but when it did the ships were named for states. The U.S.S. Missouri (pictured) is one of four Iowa class battleships built during World War II. The “Mighty Mo” last saw active duty in 1991 during the first Iraq War and is currently a floating museum at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Hares are most active in the spring. Their excited behavior – thumping the ground with their powerful hind legs, and jumping up and twisting their bodies in mid-air during the spring – suggested the phrase “Mad as a March hare.” We don’t have hares around here, although they do up in the Northwoods. They’re big, too.

When autumn rolls around, we don’t go over to the rugby field on a Friday night, although history would suggest we should. From 1900 to 1924, the United States was the only double gold medalist in Olympic rugby competition. We beat the French during both the 1920 and 1924 games to win the medals.

Speaking of sports, the longest game in the history of hockey took place in March 1936, part of the Stanley Cup finals. The Detroit Red Wings beat the Montreal Maroons, 1-0, in the sixth overtime period after the game had ground on for two hours, 56 minutes and 30 seconds. It was 2:25 a.m. before the Red Wings won.

Although it didn’t seem to help efficient traffic management much, Washington, D.C., was one of the few cities in the world that was planned before it was built. Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French engineer, drew up the plans for the capital city in 1791.

Investigation needed

To the Editor: I just read this morning on the Internet that a Russian spy ship is cruising off our east coast. I guess that’s a plus for the Trump White House. Now they will not be charged long-distance telephone rates to call Moscow and the Kremlin. The ship will be at least 12 miles offshore and the calls may qualify for local phone rates.

All kidding aside, it is imperative that the legislative branch vote to set up an independent investigative team of experts to uncover the degree of Russian involvement in our political campaigns and our national

election this past November.

Those Americans found guilty of talking to Russian agents must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of our law, no matter who they are.

The Czech Republic has already uncovered massive Russian interference in European elections, fake news, and political interference (like Poland thinking of invading Belorussia). The Russians have done these things in the past, and they are doing them now. Wake up, America.

If it’s snowing one day, and sunny and warm the next, it must be February in Illinois. Or, come to think about it, just about any time during these global climate change winters we’re experiencing these days.

At any rate, each February, the groundhog is rudely dumped out of his nice, warm burrow by publicity-seeking humans and sees either his shadow or a Valentine’s card, and goes back to sleep until the Ides of March. In betwixt the shadow incident and Mother Nature’s groundhog alarm clock, we usually have some very interesting weather.

But despite the bad weather we Illinoisans take for granted each February, the U.S. Postal Service attends its appointed rounds, with mail carriers braving snow, sleet, rain, crazed Congressional budget-cutters, and angry dogs to bring us dozens of increasingly desperate requests from Publisher’s Clearing House to allow the Prize Patrol to show up at our house.

If you think such contest pleas are junk mail, you’re right, but mail carriers don’t have the luxury of making qualitative decisions about which mail they will and won’t deliver.

Which is, as Martha Stewart would say, a good thing because it provides me with enough material over a month’s time to equal one column. So, with no further ado, here are a number of things I would never have found out if I hadn’t opened all the junk mail that arrived in the mailbox at the Matile Manse each and every day our mail carrier showed up: In general, the U.S. Navy now names aircraft carriers after public officials, battleships after states, destroyers after sailors, and attack submarines for cities. It used to be that carriers were named for either historic battles (Yorktown, Lexington) or historic naval vessels (Enterprise, Hornet), battleships after states, heavy cruisers after major cities, light cruisers after minor cities, destroyers after sailors, and submarines after fish or other marine life. It sort of shows how the importance of various kinds of ships has changed over the years. By the way, the navy has no more battleships in commission.

And by the way, get your milk from Guernsey cows, and you’ll be a happier camper.

Beware the sneaky elephant. Because of their unique, padded feet, elephants can walk and run with surprisingly little noise.

The first modern English dictionary, Samuel Johnson’s A Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1775, contained only about 50,000 words. Today’s average college dictionary has more than 150,000 words, and many electronic dictionaries and unabridged dictionaries have a half million words. Just for comparison’s sake, the Second Edition of the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use, and 47,156 obsolete words. But the Oxford folks note it is impossible to actually count the words defined. Take “dog” for instance. Is it one word or more? You can “dog someone’s heels,” you can “dog a hatch” on a ship, or you can pet your family dog.

Rep. Hultgren visits Aurora Textiles plant in Yorkville PLANO RECORD U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, toured the new textile manufacturing operations at Aurora Specialty Textiles Group (ASTG) on Route 47 in Yorkville on Feb. 10.

The visit included a question-­a nd-answer session with several members of the plant’s senior management staff and a tour of the plant’s new 124,000-square-foot manufacturing operations led by Dan LaTurno, president of ASTG. The tour included ASTG’s new ultra-wide-width coating operations.

“It was a distinct honor to host Congressman Hultgren today and display our world-class textile processing operation,” LaTurno said. “We at Aurora strive every day to prove that a successful textile operation can operate in North America. Thanks to Meridian’s continued support and investment in next-generation textile

technologies, our mission to double our sales by 2021 is well within reach.”

Founded in 1883 on the west side of the Fox River in Aurora, ASTG operated solely as a bleaching operation before adding finishing, dyeing and coating capabilities by the late 1950s.

Today, the company provides a wide range of coating, finishing and dyeing capabilities to the global textile industry and manufactures a wide range of printable textiles designed to work optimally with the latest digital print technologies.

Up until about a year ago, the company maintained operations solely in the Aurora plant.

But seeing new opportunities emerging – and the need to invest in new equipment and technology to support ultra-wide-width coating – company leadership decided to invest in a new plant and equipment.

Steven Barrett’s mother, Joyce, and wife, Lyn, hold copies of the resolution honoring Barrett for his life of service to his country and community. The Kendall County Board honored a longtime Oswego American Legion Post commander and VAC superintendent at its meeting Tuesday morning.

Steven Barrett of Oswego died at age 68 of cancer Aug. 28. He served as superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission of Kendall County from 2014 until the middle of last year, and also served as commander of American Legion Post 675 in Oswego for many years.

County Board Chairman Scott Gryder announced the resolution, which states that the County Board and county residents mourn Barrett’s passing. The board presented the resolution to Barrett’s widow, Lyn, his mother, Joyce, and other family.

Reading the resolution, Gryder stated that Barrett enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967 and trained as a pharmacy tech, but was attached to the U.S.

Marines in Vietnam where he served as a corpsman flying medical evacuation missions.

It was during one of those missions when his helicopter was shot down by Viet Cong guerrilla fighters, Gryder read, and several of Barrett’s fellow crew members were killed. Barrett and the other survivors engaged the enemy on the ground until support could arrive.

Barrett received the Purple Heart for his actions that day, and also received the Air Medal for the number of air missions he participated in, Gryder read.

Barrett remained in the reserves and served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991, Gryder said.

Gryder said Barrett was “dearly loved by his family and friends, by the community for his continued passion for helping veterans, and for his sense of humor, humility and accomplishments.”

IVVC students will host benefit breakfast March 12 The Indian Valley Vocational Center SkillsUSA members will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, March 12, at the Sandwich Fire Department at 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Kindergarten registration in Plano set for March 7

Plano School District 88’s kindergarten registration will be held at P.H. Miller Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7.

Students registering for kindergarten for the 2017-18 school year must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017, to be eligible for kindergarten.

Items needed for registration include: official birth certificate; three forms of documentation of Plano residency (mortgage papers/tax bill, lease and two utility bills); photo ID (must bring to registration).

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, will join a forum on March 3 with veterans at the American Legion Fox River hosted by the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission.

The event will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Fox River, 22 S. 2nd St., in Geneva.

The event will feature representatives from Edward Hines Jr. VA hospital and the VA Regional office (Chicago). Hultgren will address pressing issues with the VA health care system, hear directly from veterans and answer questions at the forum.

“Veterans deserve our utmost respect, and that includes making good on our promises to them,” said Hultgren. “I look forward to joining our local veterans, their families and key representatives from the VA to discuss and address ongoing issues and concerns with VA health care, disability, pensions, survivor’s benefits, job-seeking assistance

and other services for veterans. Hearing directly from Illinois veterans and their families informs my work on their behalf in Congress.”

Plano High School recently announced its students and staff of the month for February.

PHS staff nominated students for Student of the Month for the month of February. Students are nominated for PRIDE behavior (Personal Responsibility, Respect, Involved Academically, Demonstrates safe behavior, and Excellence in what they do).

At the same time, they felt it important to maintain operations within commuting distance of the existing plant and began looking for facilities nearby. With the move to Yorkville, ASTG also began adding new employees, while training existing employees to operate a new generation of textile equipment.

The new plant features the an EHWHA ultra-wide-width coating and finishing line, which works easily with a broad range of woven and non-woven materials up to 134 inches wide. The EHWHA enhances Aurora’s ability to serve both current and new customers.

Today, Aurora is poised to move into a leader position in several new and expanding textile markets.

“Every time I visit one of the many flourishing manufacturers in the 14th District, I am amazed by the innovation that’s taking place right here in Illinois,” Rep. Hultgren said.

Yorkville doctor getting new legal team in sex case The Yorkville doctor accused of sexually abusing some of his patients is switching legal teams, he confirmed last week in court.

Dr. Haohua Yang, who lived in Naperville but practiced in Yorkville, is facing multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse related to accusations that he assaulted female patients at his Yorkville practice. Yang is being held without bond at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Yang appeared before Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann on Feb. 15 to confirm that Naperville attorney Terry Ekl and Chicago attorney Terry Gillespie no longer would be representing him. He has hired attorneys

Robert Motta and Jeremy Jorgenson to represent him instead. Motta and Ekl appeared with Yang in court last week.

When McCann asked Yang if the change in legal teams was at his request, Yang said, “I respect that decision.”

“It’s not my request, but I respect that,” Yang repeated.

When McCann again quizzed Yang about whether he agreed with the decision to change legal teams, Yang said he agreed.

McCann agreed on a status hearing date with the new attorneys at 9 a.m.

March 10 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville.

McCann found Yang not guilty of one of the charges on Jan. 13 following a bench trial, which is heard by the judge instead of a jury.

Plano man killed in Norway single-vehicle crash Store

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Plano man was killed in a single-vehicle accident near Galena and Kennedy roads early Saturday morning, Yorkville police said.

Luis Rocha, 27, of Plano was killed when his pickup truck went off the westbound lane of Galena Road, police said.

Police said they responded to the crash at approximately 5:45 a.m. Saturday morning, where they found Rocha’s pickup truck off the roadway near the southwest corner of the intersection of Galena and Kennedy.

Rocha had been ejected from the vehicle and was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said it appeared Rocha’s truck had been traveling westbound on Galena when he failed to negotiate the curve and went into the opposite lane of traffic. The vehicle then traveled in the south ditch of Galena Road for several feet before striking the roadway embankment at Galena and Kennedy and becoming airborne. The vehicle landed in a private yard, where it struck a tree, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, pending toxicology reports, police said.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Injured in hit-and-run A Boulder Hill resident, Benjamin Rivas, 40, of the 20th block of Seneca Road, was injured Feb. 18 at 3:48 p.m. when the vehicle he was driving was struck by another vehicle on Boulder Hill Pass at Circle Drive East in Boulder Hill. Police said Rivas was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, while the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene. Fugitive wanted on rape, kidnapping charges caught in Oswego

Federal law enforcement authorities apprehended a fugitive in Oswego Feb. 8.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force took Bruno Rendina into custody in the area of Route 31 and Etsinger Road near the Oswego Village Hall, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office reported that Rendina, 38, was wanted in Union County, North Carolina, on charges of second-degree kidnapping and second-degree rape.

The sheriff’s office said an investigation conducted by task force personnel with the assistance of sheriff’s deputies led to Rendina’s apprehension.

Rendina had been a fugitive since Sept. 9.

“The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate fugitives hiding in Kendall County.

Fugitives will be tracked down, apprehended and brought back to justice,” said County Sheriff Dwight Baird.

Bristol Township, according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said the compressor, which is valued at more than $500, was stolen sometime between last August and Feb. 20. Police said they have identified suspects in the theft and are continuing their investigation.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Victor Andrade, 31, of the 400 block of High Street, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle for disobeying a traffic control device and making an improper turn Feb. 19 at 9:16 p.m. on Route 30 and Fifth Street.

DUI, obstructing among charges County sheriff’s deputies arrested Shelly Marie Ziemba, 46, of the 16000 block of Roots Road, Newark, after stopping her vehicle for driving erratically in the area of Route 52 and Roots Road Feb. 16 at 5:45 p.m.

Police said Ziemba exited her vehicle with an open can of beer, gave them several different names and refused to identify herself. She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Ziemba faces an additional charge of obstructing identification.

Juvenile faces charges County sheriff’s deputies arrested a male juvenile while responding to a hitand-run crash in the area of Ridge Road and Route 126 in NaAuSay Township Feb. 16 at 3:25 p.m.

Police said the juvenile faces a charge of obstructing and was cited for

having no valid driver’s license and no insurance.

It’s just one example of how Dave Heiss has pretty much seen it all as the men’s head basketball coach at Waubonsee Community College.

Consider this – Heiss was just a 23-year-old when he began coaching the Chiefs and now he’s coaching a player who is two years older than that.

Heiss, who is in his 32nd season at the school, recently coached game No. 1,000 of his career. He won No. 600 Feb. 7 as the Chiefs outlasted Prairie State College.

“It’s a little bit hard to believe I’ve been doing this for so long,” Heiss said.

“If you told me I would’ve been here for 32 years I would’ve been willing to bet you my paycheck that it never would’ve happened. I thought I’d move up the coaching ranks and unfortunately that didn’t happen.”

That doesn’t mean Heiss isn’t happy with how things turned out for him.

He’s making a huge impact on the lives of young men both on and off the court and his teams have been quite successful.

“I came to terms with things about 15 or 20 years ago,” he said. “This is where I was meant to be and I get to make a big influence on these young men, incorporating life lessons in basketball teachings in a team environment.”

His teams have won 11 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference titles under his leadership, including most recently in 2013.

His 2008, 2010 and 2011 teams captured the Region IV Division II District B championships, which propelled them onward to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

He also was quite the player himself. He had the opportunity to play for legendary West Aurora coach Gordie Kerkman before also playing at the junior college level in Wyoming. He finished up his college career with a couple seasons at Division II Bemidji State in Minnesota.

Heiss, who is also a full-time faculty member in the school’s physical education department, doesn’t expect to be coaching for too many more years.

Another legendary coach at the school, Dave Randall, retired after serving at the helm of the baseball team from 1978 until 2014. Heiss said he likely would not be around that long.

“I’m thinking it’ll be four, maybe five more years,” he said.

The impact he has made, though, will last forever.

“The neat thing that I’ve always told our players is that once you play here you become a part of the coach Heiss family,” he said. “I hear from so many of the guys that played for me 10 years ago, 20, 25 years ago. It’s a neat thing. I don’t remember all the different games. I remember some of them, but you remember those relationships over 32 years.”

The Oswego resident who attends Aurora Christian capped a successful debut season for the Eagles’ program in the best way possible. He not only captured a championship at Saturday’s Class 1A finals at State Farm Center, but also wrapped up an unbeaten campaign in the process.

Johnson’s teammate, Noah Villarreal, a freshman who lives in Plano, also reached the title mat at 120 but lost an 11-5 decision to Fulton’s Tyler Fleetwood to finish with a 33-4 record.

Johnson completed a 35-0 season by defeating Bishop McNamara’s Pauley Keane 3-0 in the 106-pound championship match. He was dominant in

The other Eagle qualifier was Zeke Marshall, a freshman who lives in Yorkville, who reached the semifinals at 113 before falling to the eventual champion, IC Catholic’s Joey Bianchini. Marshall wound up claiming fifth

place to cap a 31-4 season.

Oswego had four individuals in the Class 3A competition. Two of the Panthers went 2-2 and put themselves in a position to win medals for a top six finish, but fell one win short.

Senior Josh Torres (41-7) lost to the eventual 170-pound champion, Mount Carmel’s David Riojas in the quarterfinals, and then split his final two matches. Junior Gannon Hughes (43-8) lost in the quarterfinals at 132 to Montini’s Fidel Mayora and then went 1-1 his next two matches.

Panthers junior Allen Swanson (3815 at 145) and senior Dan Majewski (3613 at 160) both went 0-2 in the competition.

Sandwich senior Tommy Dale (356), in his first state meet, lost to the eventual 2A champion at 145, Richmond-Burton’s Gavin Sutton, in the quarterfinals and wound up going 2-2 to miss earning a medal by one win.

“Sometimes, it depends on where you fall in the bracket, but I thought Tommy wrestled tough,” Sandwich coach Josh McCarty said. “It’s a fine cap to his senior season.”

Plano junior Ivan Garcia (16-6) dropped his lone match at 138 in 2A. Yorkville senior Ryan Morris (33-11) did the same at 285 in 3A.

MaKayli Vann, Reapers take Rosary to OT in loss Plano star has 26 points and 21 rebounds in playoff thriller

She hit the game-winning 3-pointer in a sectional final for Indian Creek last year. It was but one of Vann’s many big moments on the way to third place in Class 1A. Even in defeat, Vann and Plano were memorable on Feb. 15. She scored 26 points and 21 rebounds, 17 of her points coming after halftime. Sixth-seeded Plano took fourth-seeded Rosary to overtime before succumbing 60-54 in a Class 3A IMSA Regional semifinal thriller.

“MaKayli is just a special athlete,” Plano coach John Chernick said. “She’s one of those girls that won’t go down without leaving everything on the floor. If we were going to down tonight, our girls were going to go down fighting.”

Vann put Plano (19-9) in position to win with a spectacular shot late in regulation.

She faked a 3-pointer, took two dribbles and sank a contested 15-foot jumper from the right wing off one foot for a 49-47 lead with 1:41 left.

“That was an amazing shot for anybody,” Chernick said. “We could sit here for an hour and not make that shot.”

Those were Plano’s last points of regulation, though. In overtime the Reapers took their last lead, 51-50, on Demetra Phylactos’ free throws with three minutes left. Rosary’s Mary Kate Bakala hit two free throws to regain the lead. Trailing 55-51, Vann hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to one, but Plano missed four shots – three of them layups – for the tie in the final minute.

“I have to say, I’m proud with what we did here,” Vann said. “I have no regrets, other than I wish we would have won.”

Rosary (13-14) has had been Plano’s nemesis in recent years. The Royals have eliminated the Reapers from the playoffs the last three years, the previous two times by double digits. Rosary routed Plano 64-37 just nine days prior to this regional game.

The rematch bore no resemblance. Plano led 11-9 after a quarter, 22-17 at halftime and by as much as 26-19 early in the third quarter after a Vann 3-pointer.

out with three minutes left in overtime.

“My hat’s off to Plano,” Rosary coach Phil VanBogaert said. “They deserved to win this game as much as we did. At times they probably deserved it more.”

MaKenzie Vann, who was sick for the first game with Rosary, had eight points and seven rebounds.

Hannah Hupe, one of seven Plano seniors, added six points.

The Reapers led throughout most of the first three quarters, but it seemed to slip away with a Rosary 17-2 run. Smith’s jumper got the Royals ahead 36-28, but Plano charged back to tie it 38-38 on Raven Russell’s steal and score with 5:57 left.

“The girls just seemed to be in the right place at the right time when we needed it,” Chernick said.

“We made every play when we needed and answered every run except the last.”

It was a game, and a season, to remember.

The Reapers had just one starter, senior Bradi Gann, returning from an 11-win team. Expectations heightened when the Vann sisters transferred from Indian Creek in August.

They were realized, too, with Plano winning its first-ever conference championship.

“I’m very satisfied with the season,” Vann said.

“Coming in here, not knowing what to expect, how we were going to fit in. It turned out well.”

Nathan Shead returns to PHS for senior year, to Reapers’ gain

Nathan Shead left Plano, but it never left him.

Shead, a 6-foot guard, spent his junior year at East Aurora after two at Plano High School. He still attended several Plano home games, though. It was bittersweet to watch friends he grew up with lead Plano to its first Class 3A regional championship.

“I was happy to see them win it, but it was kind of weird,” Shead said. “I had mixed feelings. I felt like I should have been out there.”

Shead transferred back to Plano to live with his mom this year. The Reapers sure are glad to have him.

Shead and Plano (20-6, 9-1) have lost just once since December, and this Friday can clinch the Interstate Eight Conference championship outright with a win at Sandwich. After Sandwich’s loss Tuesday at Herscher, the Reapers are a game ahead of the Indians and Streator.

“It’s going to be a good game. I’m excited for it,” Shead said with a wide smile.

“We’re going for it.”

Shead’s return, it seems, has been seamless.

He played with the Reapers all summer, scored 23 points in his first regular-season game back and had 30 in the sixth game. Shead’s now averaging a team-high 16.4 points, shooting 43.3 percent from the field.

“We’d really be struggling without him,” Plano coach Kyle Kee said. “He’s one of the top players in the area.

He carried us early with his shot.”

Plano’s scoring seems much more balanced now.

Elijah Maisonet is averaging 11.8 points per game, Anthony Martinez 8.5 and Brandon Contreras 7.2.

Shead has hit 62 3-pointers at a 36.9 rate, even though he’s clearly the top priority for opponents.

“When [Shead is] under control he’s really good.

I don’t know if there’s a better shooter around.

He takes some tough ones. He’s a volume shooter. There’s not a time that we don’t want him shooting.”

The Reapers have really been rolling since the calendar flipped to 2017.

They are 11-1, all but two of the wins by double figures.

Maisonet had 14 points, Shead 13, Martinez 11 and Contreras 10 in a 59-36 win at Coal City last Friday. Remarkably, Plano has lost just one non-tournament game all year.

With a win Friday and two more in regionals, Plano can match the school win record set by the Brad Korn-led 199899 team that took fourth in Class A. “I had high expectations for this team,” Shead said.

“I felt like we had something special.”

Sandwich, which last won the conference in 1992, will hardly be a pushover. The Indians just lost their first conference game last Friday at Streator. They hope to get point guard Jordan Isham back this Friday.

“They have a couple of the top players in the league in Jackson Smith and Andrew Price, and Jimmy Braddish may be the best shooter,” Kee said.

Plano was shipped to a regional at Kankakee, where they open against the Kanka-

kee-Manteno winner on March 1. The Reapers, should they advance to a sectional final, could get a rematch of last year’s semifinal with Hillcrest.

“I know our kids would love another shot at those

guys,” Kee said. “I think us and Peotone both showed last year that if you’re there that night you have a chance to beat them. One [non-tournament loss], it’s pretty spectacular. I think we’re peaking at the right time.”
